[0:00]respected brothers and sisters assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh me allah subhanho wa taala
[0:07]accept your aman and deeds in this holy blessed month of ramadan
[0:13]and we ask allah subhanaw taala to make this month a spiritually
[0:18]uplifting month and may Allah protect you all in these trying and
[0:28]difficult times according to Islamic law a traveler must break their fast
[0:34]when they are travelling there are exceptions we've mentioned those exceptions in
[0:41]our previous series now there is one important question here is it
[0:49]allowed according to Islamic law to travel for the only purpose of
[0:54]breaking your fast so you travel tomorrow not because you have work
[0:58]not because you have business not because you're visiting anyone no the
[1:02]only reason why you're travelling is to evade the fast is so
[1:06]you do not fast tomorrow is this valid is this acceptable is
[1:15]this sinful there is no doubt that doing so is makrooh it
[1:19]son recommended it's discouraged because you're missing out on the rewards of
[1:24]fasting in the month of Ramadan there are Hadees that tell us
[1:27]fasting in the month of Ramadan has such an amazing reward you
[1:33]cannot compensate for it any time of the year so there's no
[1:36]doubt that it's makrooh it son recommended however is it Haram is
[1:43]it sinful no according to Islamic law you can travel to break
[1:47]your fast I know many people struggle with this idea they find
[1:51]this unacceptable but my dear brothers and sisters we have to go
[1:58]by our legal system Allah clearly mentions in the Quran and we
[2:02]have this in the hadith that if you are traveling then you
[2:05]will make it up later Allah Allah suffer in fact the Toolman
[2:09]am in oka surah al-baqarah verse 185 Allah makes clear Allah doesn't
[2:15]say in the Quran and this is not mentioned you know in
[2:20]the hadith as a condition that if you're traveling to break your
[2:23]fast you're not allowed to it's a general verse it's a general
[2:26]statement as long as you're considered a traveler and you're actually traveling
[2:32]then you break your fast many people struggle with this idea but
[2:37]in Islamic law we have to always look at the subject and
[2:41]the ruling that applies to it Allah says if you're in your
[2:44]town your home you're in your city the ruling is you fast
[2:50]if you are a traveler this label this subject of traveler here
[2:56]is applied then the ruling is you break your fast it's as
[3:01]simple as that just like the castle and the tamam right if
[3:06]you're praying in your city in your town you pray full so
[3:12]that of the horse Allah tell us or so that tell a
[3:16]shot will be full but if you're a traveler you sure in
[3:18]your salah isn't it so now imagine if some today someone says
[3:24]I'm going to drive an hour to Toledo so I pray my
[3:26]Lord and assert us are there that's my intention obviously this is
[3:32]an irrational thing to do no doubt about that but is this
[3:35]Haram no it's not how long will this person be punished by
[3:41]God for doing that no because Allah has made it very clear
[3:43]you're traveling you pray short hustle you're in your town you pray
[3:47]full let me give you a legal relevant example to bring this
[3:56]closer to our minds with this covered nineteen crisis here in the
[4:00]United States you know the Congress along with the government they decided
[4:08]to give Americans who lost employment compensation you can file for unemployment
[4:15]if you've lost your job now as a result of coronavirus you
[4:22]can actually go online file for an application and state that you've
[4:27]lost your job and they're giving you unemployment some people are receiving
[4:34]$600 a week some 700 some even $800 so the law says
[4:38]anyone who's not employed is eligible to get unemployment this is the
[4:45]letter of the law this is what the law says now if
[4:49]imagine if someone they go to their company that they're working for
[4:54]or the company comes to them or you work for an institution
[4:59]or a business the business your employer comes and tells you look
[5:04]why don't you go and apply for unemployment benefits and I will
[5:14]lay you off from from my you know business that way you'll
[5:17]get your money and the burden on me will be reduced because
[5:21]I'm not making as much money these days is this illegal to
[5:25]do see you have a job right now you can still make
[5:32]money from that job however you go and you make this agreements
[5:35]with your boss to basically lay you off so you go and
[5:41]get these unemployment benefits now there's a moral discussion here is this
[5:46]moral to do or not that's another discussion obviously this may not
[5:50]be a wise thing to do it may not be a principle
[5:53]thing to do right maybe there are other Americans who need this
[5:57]money more than you but is this illegal it's not illegal the
[6:03]law does not ban that the law simply states whoever is unemployed
[6:07]they get the benefits now why are you unemployed is it because
[6:10]you really got kicked out of your job you got fired you
[6:15]got furloughed you got laid off or you willingly made that arrangement
[6:18]with your employer it doesn't matter the law says anybody who is
[6:24]now unemployed they can file for unemployment and they will get unemployment
[6:28]benefits that's just to give you an example that sometimes when you
[6:33]have a subject the law applies so Islam says if you're a
[6:39]traveler then you have to break your fast now why is it
[6:46]that you're traveling for work to visit a family member or just
[6:50]to escape the fast it doesn't matter as long as your traveling
[6:54]is not for a sinful purpose meaning to go and commit a
[7:00]sin somebody is traveling to go to Vegas so they gamble yes
[7:03]this is sinful traveling in this type of traveling according to our
[7:07]Islamic law you have to keep your fast now a person you
[7:13]know would joke about this example and he'd say say it you
[7:16]know the one who's going to gamble or do something sinful you
[7:19]really think they're going to fast you'd be surprised believe me there
[7:25]are some people they fast they pray and they do all sorts
[7:28]of things in any case yes there are people like that so
[7:31]you are allowed to willingly fast travel in the month of Ramadan
[7:39]and the reason for traveling is just to avoid the fast you're
[7:43]allowed to do that even though this is makrooh this is not
[7:45]recommended now this brings us to this very important discussion some people
[7:51]say tomorrow I have an exam I'm taking the bar exam I
[7:57]am taking a very long exam it's a very important exam so
[8:02]I need to be fully alert I need to drink my coffee
[8:03]I need to eat well before the exam and it's going to
[8:08]take five six hours I cannot fast if I fast this will
[8:10]impact my exam so can I break my fast let's examine the
[8:15]steps here we need to take to address the scenario number one
[8:19]can you reschedule the exam without any difficulty or serious consequences if
[8:25]you can't try go to your school go to that institution tell
[8:31]them this is the month of Ramadan I am fasting during during
[8:33]the day it's difficult for me to take the exam see if
[8:38]they're willing to accommodate you that's the first step try show a
[8:41]lot that you care about his laws and you're trying sometimes it
[8:45]works sometimes it may not work that's the first step see if
[8:50]you can reschedule for after the month of Ramadan the second step
[8:56]here my dear brothers and sisters sleep well before the exam you
[9:02]know if you have time till 5:00 a.m.
[9:04]let's say your exam starts at 8:00 a.m.
[9:07]try to have your coffee at 4:30 for some people that still
[9:10]has an impact if that's something that works for you do so
[9:15]let's say that doesn't work for you the exam is 8 hours
[9:17]you need to drink coffee during the exam to stay focused are
[9:22]you allowed to break your fast no not yet there are still
[9:27]other steps that you have to take the other step that you
[9:33]can take in this scenario is to travel travel my dear brothers
[9:37]and sisters at 6 a.m.
[9:38]go travel go about half an hour away from your city limits
[9:43]and then break your fast while you're traveling and then come back
[9:47]if you do so you're not committing a sin but if you
[9:52]just stay in your town and you break your fast that is
[9:54]sinful you have to pay akka father because you deliberately broke your
[9:57]fast my dear brothers and sisters and we're not allowed to do
[10:02]that if you're sick you can break your fast but just to
[10:05]stay focused and an exam that's not a legitimate excuse so you
[10:11]can travel and these days it's very easy to travel so use
[10:14]this as a solution if you really have to go to that
[10:18]exam and there's no way that you can stay focused and there's
[10:21]no way you're going to pass that exam unless you break your
[10:27]fast then travel an hour or two before the exam go and
[10:30]travel and break your fast and then come back to take your
[10:35]exam the other recommendation that I have here my dear brothers and
[10:39]sisters half Toa Coonan Allah Allah will help you Allah will see
[10:44]you're his servant and you're fasting and you're going through this difficulty
[10:48]do not underestimate the blessings Allah gives you when you obey Him
[10:52]my dear brothers and sisters I myself I can attest to that
[10:58]you know starting about 7-8 years ago or actually 10 years ago
[11:02]when the month of Ramadan started to shift from the fall into
[11:07]the summer months the days became longer and longer so many mosques
[11:11]and programs they started having their lecture before if thought and you
[11:16]know we as scholars and speakers we have to speak sometimes after
[11:20]17 hours of fasting or 16 hours of fasting in the last
[11:25]few years it has been very common you know for me and
[11:28]many other speakers and scholars let's say Adan is at 9:00 p.m.
[11:34]we give our lecture at 8 p.m.
[11:36]8:15 now this is after 16 hours of fasting believe me it's
[11:42]very challenging that that first year I was not sure what to
[11:45]do should I stay the full 10 days in that city that
[11:51]I'm visiting and fast should I travel a week later after that
[11:54]so I'm considered a traveler so I can give my lecture and
[12:00]I can concentrate and then later on make it up you know
[12:03]I was thinking with myself but then I said half Toa Koenen
[12:05]Allah Allah Spano to ally sees what you're going through let him
[12:09]help you and my dear brothers and sisters Allah helps believe me
[12:14]it's not easy after 17 hours towards the end of the day
[12:17]you have not eaten anything for 17 hours you cannot drink anything
[12:20]and you have to give a 45 minute lecture a 30-minute lecture
[12:24]there's a lot of memorization that you have to do you have
[12:27]to concentrate so Allah does help you I thought it would be
[12:34]very difficult but then I saw that Allah Spano - Allah puts
[12:36]blessings in your work in your effort and he does help you
[12:41]throw it so my dear brothers and sisters have - what Quran
[12:44]Allah go to that exam and say o Allah you compensate me
[12:49]and see how Allah Spano - Allah is going to help you
[12:51]now assuming you cannot travel assuming that you have to go to
[13:01]this exam and this exam is going to determine your fate if
[13:05]you fail this exam that's it it's it's over for you there's
[13:11]no opportunity it's very difficult to really conceive of a scenario like
[13:14]that but we're just talking about it theoretically your life is going
[13:18]to be shattered destroyed you're not going to get a job and
[13:21]you will put your cellphone your family in unbearable hardship and the
[13:26]only way to avoid that hardship is to break your fast and
[13:31]go to that exam and you cannot reschedule there's nothing you can
[13:35]do about it in this very rare rare example okay scholars say
[13:39]if keeping the fast is going to put you an unbearable difficulty
[13:44]and hardship fine break your fast and then after the month of
[13:48]ramadhan you can make it up but with all these solutions and
[13:53]alternatives my dear brothers and sisters it should not reach this point
[13:58]one final point here about fasting while traveling if you're ever leaving
[14:04]your town your city after the Horde the whole is the time
[14:11]where Saratov Lahore is offered it's the time of Adan its midday
[14:15]it's the half point between sunrise and sunset at the time of
[14:19]Lord if you're travelling and you start your travels after the horse
[14:25]so let's say Lord is 1:30 p.m.
[14:27]you're leaving at 3:00 p.m.
[14:27]at 2:00 p.m.
[14:30]you will stay fasting that day you cannot break your fast if
[14:36]you're leaving before the whole so I like at 11:00 a.m.
[14:38]10:00 a.m.
[14:40]then you break your fast this is one scenario another scenario is
[14:44]if you were traveling and you're going back to your hometown so
[14:48]let's say you went to Chicago for a weekend program or business
[14:53]so you broke your fast now one day you're back you're on
[14:56]your way back to Detroit if you're going to arrive Detroit after
[15:02]the hood after 1:30 p.m.
[15:03]then yes that day you cannot fast it but if you're going
[15:09]to arrive Detroit before the hood let's say you left Chicago at
[15:12]6:00 a.m.
[15:14]you will be in Detroit by 10:00 a.m.
[15:17]it's optional for you you can choose to fast that day or
[15:20]no if you didn't eat anything after federer that Monday if you
[15:25]did not eat anything after federal in Chicago and all the way
[15:31]until Detroit and you got to Detroit before the whole you can
[15:34]actually make the NIA too that day and your fast would be
[15:40]valid but if you decided to eat in Chicago at 6:00 a.m.
[15:42]when you were leaving Chicago you had a coffee or during the
[15:46]way you got hungry and you had a snack but if you
[15:48]did eat you're allowed to eat even if you know that you're
[15:51]going to arrive Chicago Detroit before the Lord but you're allowed to
[15:54]eat or drink so if you did eat or drink then you're
[15:58]not allowed to fast that day anymore you have to make it
[16:00]up later so these are also two scenarios that have to do
[16:05]with traveling and fasting may Allah Spano - Allah bless you all
[16:08]my dear brothers and sisters wassalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
