[0:13]muhammad i'd like to welcome you all to our friday night youth
[0:43]program at the nyc every friday night we try to come up
[0:46]with a new and interesting topic to discuss and tonight's topic is
[0:56]regarding tattoos what is islam's perspective on tattoos is islam for it
[1:04]is islam against it what does islam have to say our religion
[1:07]about the topic of getting tattoos now an objection that you may
[1:17]pose or a question that may cross the mind is this why
[1:20]do we even need to have this discussion because simply said it's
[1:26]my body and i can do whatever i want with it why
[1:30]do you even need to have this discussion obviously i can have
[1:34]a tattoo what am i doing i'm just scribbling on my body
[1:36]right i'm just drawing on my body so why do we even
[1:41]need to have this discussion to begin with it should be a
[1:43]given yes it is okay to have a tattoo because it's your
[1:50]body it's your choice and you can do whatever you want with
[1:55]it and that's the same argument that the pro-abortionists use you know
[1:59]there's this heated debate regarding abortion is abortion okay is it not
[2:06]okay is it ethical is it not ethical those individuals that find
[2:10]abortion to be okay one of their arguments is this very point
[2:14]that i just mentioned the pro-choice movement you've heard about them right
[2:19]it's pro-choice verse pro-life what did they say the pro-choice site they
[2:23]say it's my body it's my choice none of your business if
[2:28]i want to get rid of that child in my stomach it's
[2:32]my concern it's none of your business no one can tell me
[2:34]what i can do with my body it's my body it's my
[2:39]choice don't tell me this is wrong so the same argument an
[2:44]analogy can be used when it comes to tattoos it's my body
[2:46]i want to scribble on it it's none of your business why
[2:50]would god even care if i'm scribbling on my body it's like
[2:55]saying that what does islam say about scratching your head sounds silly
[3:01]doesn't it what does islam say about plucking a hair from your
[3:07]arm this should be obviously yes it's allowed because this is something
[3:12]that has to do with me only it's no one's business and
[3:15]in fact with tattoos it's even more obvious and compelling and clear
[3:20]than abortion because with abortion it's not really just a matter of
[3:24]me there's also another human being whose life is at stake and
[3:30]that's the child in the mother's womb so that argument could be
[3:35]could be argued that that argument with abortion is flawed because it's
[3:39]not just a matter of my choice and my life no it's
[3:41]somebody else's also it's altering the life of someone else but with
[3:48]tattoos it's no one's business i'm just drawing on my body so
[3:51]why do we need to have this discussion the reason why we
[3:56]have to have this discussion my friends is two points number one
[4:03]the first reason is because who owns your body who really owns
[4:09]your body in this life the government maybe if you live in
[4:19]china i don't know but here alhamdulillah they don't who owns your
[4:26]body allah right so if allah owns your body wouldn't it wouldn't
[4:30]it be would it not be appropriate for us to ask what
[4:34]does god think about me scribbling on his body do we not
[4:41]say inna lillah to allah to god we belong and to god
[4:46]we shall go back the human being my friends is a two-dimensional
[4:51]being we have a soul and we have this body this physical
[4:57]body and the essence of our reality is not the body our
[5:00]essence is our soul the body is just a vehicle for you
[5:05]to use in this life you'll use it for 50 70 80
[5:07]90 years and then you will leave it in the grave and
[5:10]it will decay and decompose it's just a vehicle this body my
[5:15]friends is an amman from allah to us it's a trust that
[5:21]allah has given you and anytime you have a trust two things
[5:24]will apply number one you cannot you cannot alter that trust unless
[5:32]you you seek the authority and the permission of the true owner
[5:36]if i give you a trust please keep this with you can
[5:40]you go and play around with it and change its shape and
[5:44]and what not you can't why because you don't own it so
[5:46]when it comes to our body allah subhanahu wa ta'ala owns it
[5:50]he's given it to us to use but if we want to
[5:54]make any serious change to the body we need allah subhanahu wa
[5:57]ta'ala's permission now if it's something minor you want to get a
[6:00]haircut you want to scratch that's fine it's obvious but if you
[6:05]want to make an a permanent change to your body then obviously
[6:08]you have to consult your master the owner you have to consult
[6:11]allah subhana wa because he has the ultimate and the absolute authority
[6:18]over my own body so i have to at least ask at
[6:22]least have this discussion what does god think about having tattoos because
[6:26]as you all know tattoos are permanent when you get a tattoo
[6:30]that's it it's there forever it's there until the day you die
[6:35]yes you can get it off but i'll speak about that in
[6:36]the end but that's really hard it's costly it's hard and rarely
[6:42]people will go through that so if you are getting a tattoo
[6:45]it's usually something that you want it to be permanent until the
[6:48]day that you die and you're placed and you're great so this
[6:52]is number one because it's an amana it's a trust we have
[6:54]to ask allah the true owner of everything what he thinks about
[6:59]it did he allow us or did he not and number two
[7:02]the second aspect of any trust is that you have to take
[7:07]care of it you have to maintain it well and this body
[7:11]that allah has given us he didn't just give it to you
[7:14]and he said you know what do whatever you want with it
[7:16]no he told you to take care of it and that's why
[7:20]you can't just end your life one day oh i don't want
[7:23]it i want to end my life we know that this is
[7:24]a sin this is not allowed this is it is haram for
[7:32]you to commit suicide it's unlawful so you can't do whatever you
[7:36]want because it's a trust you have to take care of it
[7:38]and that's why the imams of ahlulbay tell us that your body
[7:44]parts have rights against you you have to maintain them you have
[7:48]to maintain those rights and you have to take care of your
[7:52]own body parts or else your body parts will complain against you
[7:55]on the day of judgment and they will object to you and
[7:57]god will hold you accountable for example mentions it's a beautiful book
[8:07]that the imam that we have from the imam and it's you
[8:10]can find it in english called the treatise unrights and in this
[8:15]book it's a very very short book it's probably only a couple
[8:19]of pages the imam mentions the rights that you have to maintain
[8:22]in life the rights that you have to maintain towards your parents
[8:26]towards your children your siblings your neighbors people in the society your
[8:32]teachers and then the imam finally he gets to your body parts
[8:35]even your body parts have a right against you that you have
[8:38]to maintain for example the imam speaks about the right of the
[8:43]tongue he says this very tongue that allah gave you is a
[8:47]tool that he entrusted you with it take care of it what
[8:51]do you do number one he says teach it to always speak
[8:57]kind words teach it to always be nice this is one of
[8:59]the rights that your tongue has against you if you do not
[9:04]teach it to speak in a kind way in a nice way
[9:10]then you are in reality abusing this tool and gift of god
[9:13]and it will complain and testify against you on the day of
[9:16]judgment as the quran mentions number two the imam says teach it
[9:21]to always speak the truth teach this tongue because your tongue is
[9:25]a tool you can teach it to be evil or good teach
[9:29]it to be a source of good to always speak the truth
[9:32]and then the imam tells us that refrain do not allow your
[9:39]tongue to engage in profanity and foul language some people every four
[9:42]or five words they say there has to be a some foul
[9:46]language there has to be a word of profanity by doing this
[9:51]i'm abusing this tool and this gift of allah subhanahu ta'ala god
[9:53]didn't give you this tongue so that you can use it to
[9:56]swear at people to insult people with your tongue you're abusing it
[10:00]you're using it for the wrong purpose the imam says and refrain
[10:06]from wasteful speech which is not even a sin just you know
[10:11]sometimes we engage in nonsense we sit and chat about things that
[10:15]have absolutely no worldly benefit and no benefit for my faith and
[10:20]religion correct some of those worthless topics i've seen debates go for
[10:25]an hour on which athlete is better is it lebron james or
[10:29]is it james harden for example who cares how is this going
[10:34]to help you it's not going to help you in your life
[10:36]now and it's not going to help you on the day of
[10:39]judgment so this is called wasteful speech when you engage in speech
[10:45]that has absolutely no benefit this is one of the rights of
[10:49]your tongue that when you sit and chat about something at least
[10:52]let it be something productive even if it's productive for your business
[10:56]for your career for your education for your health whatever but don't
[11:01]engage in wasteful talk so this is as an example the imam
[11:06]says your tongue has a right against you you have to take
[11:08]care of it number two he gives the example of your ears
[11:12]your ears have a right against you what do you do he
[11:16]says prevent it do not allow it to listen to someone who
[11:20]is backbiting backbiting is halam it's a sin to engage in but
[11:24]it's also a sin to listen to someone back by what do
[11:29]you do you hear someone backbiting you don't just sit there and
[11:33]listen because you will be an accomplice to that person you have
[11:36]to tell that person stop i do not allow you to insult
[11:41]this person behind that back this is a behind that person's back
[11:43]this is a cowardly act and don't do it and if you
[11:47]can't speak up then at least get up and leave so this
[11:48]is number one and number two that imam says and do not
[11:53]allow your ear to listen to that which allah has prohibited like
[11:59]what music of course haram music the un the unacceptable forms of
[12:09]music the indecent types of music for example you know the rap
[12:12]and hip-hop the ones that have especially the uh the foul language
[12:17]in it that is something that you have to prevent your ears
[12:20]from listening and then the imam speaks about the stomach your stomach
[12:23]has a right against you he says number one don't make your
[12:28]stomach a container for haram don't allow haram food to enter your
[12:32]stomach because your your own stomach will complain to allah on the
[12:36]day of judgment your own stomach will speak and will tell allah
[12:39]that he made me eat this haram food i never wanted to
[12:43]eat it so don't allow this negative energy that is contained within
[12:47]the harampu to enter your stomach and burden it number two he
[12:50]says do not burden it with too much food you know overeating
[12:54]is something that's unhealthy physically as we know obviously it leads to
[13:00]so many diseases and health problems and spiritually even for your spirit
[13:05]it is not good for you to overeat so the imam says
[13:07]one of the rights of your stomach is to not overeat do
[13:11]not burden it with too much food the hadith of the imam
[13:13]says the farthest you are from allah is when your stomach is
[13:22]full and the closest you are to allah is when your stomach
[13:25]is empty because when you're full who feels like getting up and
[13:29]praying and reading dua when you're full you want to sit on
[13:33]the couch and watch a movie or you want to take a
[13:35]nap when you're full so it discourages you from being religious and
[13:39]that's one of the beauties of the month of ramadan the month
[13:43]of ramadan is the month of spirituality allah wants you to get
[13:48]closer to him that's the whole point of the month of ramadan
[13:52]and allah wants to create an atmosphere and an environment of spirituality
[13:57]where you feel that god consciousness inside you so one one thing
[14:02]that allah does he says don't eat and don't drink because if
[14:06]you're always eating and drinking and this is what we're always doing
[14:08]we wake up we eat we go to work we're eating we
[14:11]have a snack we have coffee we have a drink and then
[14:14]we're thinking about lunch and before we finish lunch we're thinking about
[14:18]dinner our entire day starts to revolve around food and when you're
[14:22]full you can't focus on allah so keep food away for a
[14:24]couple of hours and focus on allah and then the imam he
[14:30]continues he speaks about the right of the eye the right of
[14:32]the hands of the legs and so on and so forth so
[14:35]the point is my friends our body organs and our body parts
[14:42]they have a right against us and we have to maintain it
[14:44]and that's why we have to have this discussion allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala
[14:51]owns my body has he allowed me to have a tattoo or
[14:57]not so now that we understand this let's go to the core
[15:00]discussion the core of the discussion is tattoo something that islam encourages
[15:06]is it something that it allows or not now there are before
[15:11]you say yes or no i want to have an academic discussion
[15:16]so i'll mention the possible the potential problems with tattoos and there's
[15:22]five points that i want to address number one the first potential
[15:30]problem of getting a tattoo is what is it may conflict and
[15:36]interfere with your hustle and udu we need with russell to pray
[15:41]our five daily prayers correct we take the water and we wash
[15:48]our bodies with ghost when you do the russell whatever it may
[15:54]be scholars state that water has to reach every part of your
[15:57]skin so there cannot be any barriers and likewise when you're doing
[16:05]your face and your hands from your elbows to your fingers water
[16:07]has to reach every part of your body that's why if i'm
[16:12]wearing a ring like this i take it off so that water
[16:14]reaches every part of my skin so having said that when you
[16:19]get a tattoo there's going to be a layer of ink will
[16:24]that prevent you from doing the right will that obstruct yes or
[16:31]no today's tattoos they say and i'm sure there's people that know
[16:39]more about tattoos than i do but this is based on my
[16:42]research today's tattoos do not interfere with your although so this is
[16:47]not a problem and the reason is because the tattoos are not
[16:52]placed the ink is not placed directly on your skin it is
[16:55]placed beneath the outer surface of your skin in fact the tattoo
[17:00]the ink is inserted in the dermis the dermis which is a
[17:05]tissue underneath your skin so because it is going under your skin
[17:09]it's a layer beneath your skin then it would not interfere with
[17:15]russell so this first potential problem is solved alhamdulillah one solved four
[17:22]to go number two the second potential problem that that i'm sorry
[17:28]tattoo may have is when it comes to z net for woman
[17:33]for sisters it may be a potential potential problem for them to
[17:40]get tattoos why because there is something that is called cosmetic tattoos
[17:46]and i'm sure you know about it what's the point of cosmetic
[17:49]tattoos it enhances your appearance it makes you look better correct they
[17:55]put it on the eyebrows on the lips and and only allah
[17:58]knows which other places of the body and the point is to
[18:03]make your appearance look better it's a form of adornment now as
[18:09]we know the holy quran clearly states that when it comes to
[18:16]xena women cannot show their zina but to their immediate relatives if
[18:20]there is another man then that man is not allowed to see
[18:28]that zina if that man is not a mahram not and tell
[18:35]the believing woman to lower their gaze and then allah says and
[18:41]they should not show their zine except for their husband or their
[18:49]pet or their the father the son the nephew the siblings and
[18:53]so on and so forth so the immediate relatives so based on
[18:57]this the quran is saying anything that serves as zenet for a
[19:01]woman she cannot show that to a stranger a man that is
[19:07]not related immediately now what is zena zena is one of two
[19:11]things now xena in english means adornment it's one of two things
[19:16]number one is anything that a woman wears that beautifies her like
[19:23]what makeup and jewelry this is zina the quran says you cannot
[19:29]show your zina to strangers men that are not directly immediately related
[19:36]to you this is number one and number two the second example
[19:41]of xena is anything that you apply even if you don't wear
[19:44]it but you apply to your body that makes you look better
[19:50]that enhances your bodily image that enhances your appearance this is all
[19:54]considered xenon so the question is when it comes to tattoos if
[19:58]the tattoo is being placed on the face and in the hands
[20:01]because women have to cover all their bodies in front of men
[20:06]except the face and the hands correct these are the laws of
[20:11]hijab so if the tattoo is placed on the face and on
[20:15]the hands and the point of the tattoo is to enhance the
[20:18]appearance to make her look better this becomes problematic and especially specifically
[20:24]with cosmetic tattoos now if it's somewhere else if it's on the
[20:27]arm and she's wearing a hijab that's fine but only on the
[20:32]face and on the hands so with tattoos cosmetic tattoos especially they
[20:35]should not be on the face and on the hands when it
[20:40]comes to sisters because this is a form of xena that has
[20:42]to be covered now what if it's on the arm that's fine
[20:46]because that's not being exposed that's only when she's not wearing hijab
[20:53]at home so that is fine but however one important point is
[20:57]that for the sister that goes to get the tattoo on the
[21:02]arm let's say can she go to a male artist and ask
[21:06]him to give her the tattoo why because once again we'd be
[21:12]defying the verse where allah says women have to cover all their
[21:15]bodies except the face and the heads so once again the face
[21:19]and the hands problematic if it's for cosmetic purposes if it's not
[21:23]on the face and the hands like on the arm then a
[21:28]muslim sister can have it as long as it's a female artist
[21:30]that is doing that tattoo so this is number two this is
[21:36]a second hurdle that we kind of got over and number three
[21:39]the third possible issue with tattoos is the financial issue the financial
[21:46]aspect what do i mean you see islam brothers and sisters wants
[21:51]you to spend your money wisely meaning either spend it on your
[21:57]deen on your religion on your faith invest it in your achara
[22:01]donate help the poor donate to an islamic cause to any charitable
[22:07]cause or if you want to spend on your dunya then spend
[22:13]on something that's worth investing it like education this is something to
[22:19]spend on spend on health if i'm spending money on a surgery
[22:25]on an operation on medicine on a treatment for example or just
[22:29]on exercising and eating healthy this is something that islam encourages why
[22:33]because islam promotes you having a healthy lifestyle or any other necessities
[22:42]of life this is all fine but think about tattoos what's the
[22:47]purpose of getting a tattoo does that make you smarter does it
[22:51]enhance your life in any way most of the time i know
[22:55]there's those smart people are that tell me that it makes me
[22:57]you know smarter and and i don't know what and boost my
[23:02]self-esteem and whatever now we can make up all these excuses and
[23:04]and all these pretexts but what are we really achieving when we're
[23:08]getting a tattoo you may say well how much does a tattoo
[23:11]cost it's not it's not much it doesn't cost much the average
[23:17]tattoo based on a very reliable source which is google i just
[23:25]googled it real quick the average tattoo in the us cost 250
[23:28]dollars you can google it more now there are some that are
[23:33]cheaper some that are much more expensive it can reach in the
[23:35]thousands of dollars like if you want to get a huge image
[23:39]of a lion on your back that's going to cost probably thousands
[23:41]of dollars so 250 dollars is the average cost of a tattoo
[23:47]in this country it could be argued brothers and sisters i'm not
[23:51]saying this definitively it could be argued that getting a tattoo is
[23:58]a waste of your money you're just throwing it in the in
[24:00]the river in the ocean and thus it would be discouraged because
[24:04]of this financial aspect because you're just wasting your money what's the
[24:09]point what are you really getting out of this 250 dollars not
[24:12]really getting much now you may say 250 isn't much i make
[24:17]good money alhamdulillah i make that and couple of hours well maybe
[24:21]here in the u.s 250 is not much brothers and sisters but
[24:26]in many parts of the world 250 dollars is a lot of
[24:31]money it's a lot of money do you know that there are
[24:34]over one billion people on earth that live on just one dollar
[24:41]a day one dollar or just less so in a month they
[24:45]would make only thirty dollars right thirty dollars that you and i
[24:50]spend on a meal it takes them a month and they don't
[24:55]work like you and i they work probably like 14 15 hours
[25:00]of very hard labor and they make 30 a month how long
[25:03]does it take them to make 250 do the math over 10
[25:10]months right over 10 months almost 11 months for someone that works
[25:15]30 days every single month and they work 12 to 14 15
[25:22]hours a day so that they can make one lousy tattoo that
[25:26]you go and get in 15 20 minutes isn't that a waste
[25:30]of your money isn't that a waste of our resources is that
[25:33]what islam teaches us that you let people suffer all over the
[25:37]world people in yemen right now who can't even afford five dollars
[25:43]medicine they'll die because they don't have that i go and i
[25:45]spend on a tattoo what am i getting in return people in
[25:48]lebanon today i read a couple of months ago that the average
[25:54]worker in lebanon today makes forty dollars a month forty dollars a
[26:00]month why because you know their currency collapsed you know that sure
[26:03]you're following the news right or is it just basketball and football
[26:07]and entertainment and hollywood follow the news brothers and sisters forty dollars
[26:13]a month and these are our brothers and sisters our own faith
[26:16]people we may have family members there and it takes them a
[26:23]month to make forty fifty dollars and i go and spend it
[26:27]on a lousy tattoo so when we look at it from this
[26:30]perspective i truly think that it is sometimes not appropriate me as
[26:37]a muslim who has albeit as a role model as role models
[26:44]to go and pay hundreds of dollars for some ink so that
[26:48]i could have it placed on my body so this is number
[26:53]three did we cross this hurdle or no kind of i don't
[26:58]know you make the decision this is this is just something to
[27:02]think about is it worth it there are so many people that
[27:03]don't have food and whatnot i go and spend 250 on a
[27:07]tattoo this is number three number four the fourth possible problem potential
[27:14]problem with tattoos is with your reputation you see my friends in
[27:22]our community and many communities getting a tattoo is for as a
[27:28]form of a stigma especially with the elderly people with our elderly
[27:36]congregation they tend to associate people who have tattoos with a corrupt
[27:43]lifestyle they develop stereotypes against you oh this person is evil because
[27:47]he has this tattoo now are they right to make that judgment
[27:50]they're not right they're wrong but the point is at the end
[27:56]of the day you have to preserve your reputation my friend don't
[27:59]do something that will bring negative attention that will bring negative comments
[28:06]to you especially when it's unnecessary especially when it's it's not really
[28:09]going to serve any purpose so why go and get a tattoo
[28:13]and put yourself in a position that other people stigmatize you other
[28:19]people associate you with a corrupt lifestyle why do that and you
[28:23]know there are many employers that will not even give you a
[28:27]job if they see a tattoo on your body especially if it's
[28:29]a visible tattoo on your face on your neck on your hands
[28:33]they won't give you a job because they likewise will associate you
[28:37]as being someone unreliable someone who may for example turn away customers
[28:42]so islam my friends wants you to always be respected and islam
[28:52]wants you to take care of your reputation it wants you to
[28:55]be loved and respected in the community do not do anything that
[28:57]will violate this respect that you have do not do anything that
[29:03]will leave a dent on your reputation now sometimes it's something you
[29:07]have to do you do it because you can't live without it
[29:11]because your religion tells you you have to do what you do
[29:15]but getting a tattoo what purpose is that serving no i'm getting
[29:17]a tattoo and let everybody hate me and to hell with them
[29:20]kind of a lifestyle is that islam wants you to live as
[29:24]a respectful person and there's a hadith from where he says [Music]
[29:39]the imam says that allah gave the believer authority to do to
[29:44]himself what he wishes do whatever you want to yourself you want
[29:47]to jump around you want to turn you know be a clown
[29:51]do whatever you want but allah has not given you the permission
[29:55]to humiliate yourself remember we said your body is allah says take
[30:00]this body do what you want with it but do not do
[30:05]anything that will degrade this body that will degrade you now you
[30:09]may consider as something okay but other people will look at me
[30:15]in a lower way stay away from it so if it happens
[30:16]to be if i'm just saying if it happens to be that
[30:20]getting a tattoo may degrade me it's a form of a stigma
[30:24]people will look at me in a negative way in my community
[30:29]then islam will tell you did not get it your reputation is
[30:34]more important than getting a lousy tattoo so this is number four
[30:38]and finally number five the fifth issue with tattoos is what the
[30:45]substance of the tattoo what are you gonna put on your body
[30:49]obviously if it's profanity words of profanity if it's a lewd image
[30:55]this is common sense this is unacceptable but there are some people
[30:58]that try to be smart with tattoos they say say it i
[31:02]want to get a tattoo for religious purposes like what i want
[31:08]to get the sword of imam ali salam and this has become
[31:12]a trend the sword of i want it on my arm or
[31:16]i want for example ya ali on my arm or anything that's
[31:19]religious a picture of the kaaba a picture of you know for
[31:24]example a mosque or something like that so what about this this
[31:30]should be encouraged in islam if i want to get the sword
[31:31]of imam ali salaam and like i said many individuals have got
[31:36]that but the question that i pose the objection and the question
[31:39]i pose to those individuals is by getting the sword of imam
[31:45]ali injected in your hand on your arm what are you trying
[31:49]to prove are you trying to prove that you love imam ali
[31:55]and that you are a shia of imam salah now if that's
[32:00]what you're trying to prove by getting a tattoo did you really
[32:06]think that just by getting a tattoo that makes you salam that's
[32:10]how easy it is that's how easy it is to fool god
[32:15]just get a tattoo of the sword of imam ali and khalas
[32:17]you get a free pass to heaven this is making a mockery
[32:23]of imam ali i'm basically saying imam ali is this ink on
[32:26]my hand and then my lifestyle has nothing to do with imam
[32:29]ali i lie and cheat and go out with girls and drink
[32:34]and back by and listen to music and don't pray but then
[32:36]i have the sword of imam ali that's how easy it is
[32:42]to be a shia you have a question young brother what's your
[32:46]question beautiful imam ali doesn't want a tattoo he wants you to
[32:57]pray the brother is saying we should put that as a quote
[33:01]to make it a plaque so the point is my friend if
[33:07]you're trying to prove that you are a shia of imam ali
[33:08]your intentions may be good but a tattoo will do nothing it
[33:15]won't add to anything if you are a true lover of imam
[33:17]ali you follow him in footsteps the tattoo won't add anything you've
[33:20]done it and if you aren't a true father of mum ali
[33:24]through actions then the tattoo won't really add anything so what's the
[33:28]point of getting that tattoo there's a hadith that jabber narrates from
[33:33]imam al-baqarah jabbar says that imam al-baqarah is does the one who
[33:58]claims to be a shia who claims you see that imam uses
[34:02]the word claims claims does the one who claims to be a
[34:09]shia of imam think it is enough just to say i am
[34:14]a shia imam ali just to claim just to say it just
[34:15]to have a sword ya ali on his hand and that will
[34:19]be enough and allah subhanahu ta'ala will consider him as a shia
[34:21]he says our shia are the ones that are pious the god-fearing
[34:27]ones the ones that are god's conscience and they fear allah subhanahu
[34:32]wa ta'ala is not about tattoo allah doesn't care what you have
[34:36]on your arms what's the worth of a lousy tattoo if my
[34:41]actions are all against the teachings of imam ali salah and then
[34:44]says being through actions the shia are the ones who are humble
[34:51]they have tawava humility they are trustworthy and honest they are kind
[34:57]with their parents they are kind with their neighbors and with other
[35:00]people in the community they pray they fast they read quran this
[35:06]is what it means to be a shia not having a symbol
[35:08]on my body this is not really going to do anything my
[35:12]dear brothers and sisters if you do that and you follow those
[35:16]teachings you don't need any tattoos and if you don't do that
[35:19]50 tattoos all over your body from your head to your feet
[35:22]will not serve any purpose so i don't know where this trend
[35:28]comes from that you know what i want to get tattoos of
[35:29]the names of the imams it's not haram i'm not saying it's
[35:35]haram you can do it but it's not really going to prove
[35:36]anything it's not going to make me a better person it's not
[35:40]going to get me closer to allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and it
[35:43]will not really prove that i am a shia imam ali because
[35:46]being a shia of imam ali is through actions so this is
[35:50]my opinion regarding getting religious regarding getting religious tattoos um whether it's
[35:59]the sword of imam ali al-islam or anything else and finally before
[36:02]i end this is a word of advice this is a word
[36:06]of advice from me based on what i have read from people
[36:11]that have gotten tattoos many individuals here in the u.s they tell
[36:15]themselves as soon as i turn 18 i will get a tattoo
[36:19]because apparently i didn't know that if you're not 18 you're 17
[36:24]and 11 months and 29 days you can't get a tattoo because
[36:28]you're still a little baby but once you turn 18 years old
[36:32]you can go and get a tattoo so many people many young
[36:34]people have this as a goal the day i turn 18 i
[36:38]want to go and get a tattoo this my friend is a
[36:43]terrible idea this is a very very very bad idea why because
[36:45]you're so young and when you're young you're immature you make a
[36:51]lot of bad decisions you make a lot of immature decisions decisions
[36:54]that you regret later and as you grow you become more mature
[36:59]you become more responsible your interests will change your mindset and your
[37:06]taste will all change what you like at the age of 18
[37:08]maybe you want to get a tattoo of a puppy because you're
[37:11]18 years old and 10 years from now who says you're gonna
[37:13]like that and remember tattoos are permanent if you don't want it
[37:19]permanent why are you getting a tattoo the whole idea of a
[37:21]tattoo is you want something until you die don't get a tattoo
[37:27]with the intention that you know what i'll remove it one day
[37:29]just don't get it from the first uh from the first day
[37:35]so what i like and and what i am interested in at
[37:37]age 18 will definitely not hold will not be true when i'm
[37:43]28 when i'm 38 remember one day you're going to be a
[37:44]parent you're going to be a grandfather for god's sake one do
[37:49]you still want that tattoo on your arm so when you're 18
[37:53]and you're young don't rush in getting a tattoo because this is
[37:55]something that will last forever and like i said removing a tattoo
[37:59]is not easy i was also searching this online it said you
[38:04]know many websites said this that an average tattoo removal you know
[38:10]how long it takes throw a number three hours masha allah much
[38:17]much longer months years brothers and sisters years you can google it
[38:25]and you can see the facts an average tattoo removal will take
[38:30]two and a half years to fully remove it two and a
[38:34]half years why in the world would you go and get a
[38:38]tattoo that one day you may regret it yes brother are contaminated
[38:48]yes i don't want to mention that because we live in america
[38:53]and people will say well say it not here here they're all
[38:56]professionals and they use uh you know they sterilize everything and they're
[38:59]very clean but that is obviously a valid concern that you can
[39:03]contract some viruses and diseases because it's all these needles that are
[39:07]poking you in your body so this is obviously also something to
[39:12]consider but going back to tattoo removal the point that i was
[39:14]saying do not rush in getting a tattoo because as you grow
[39:17]your perceptions and mindset and taste will change so maybe you will
[39:22]not like that tattoo anymore and many people have gotten tattoos mentioned
[39:24]this you can just google on the internet and see people who
[39:27]have regretted getting their tattoos average time it takes to remove the
[39:31]tattoo an average tattoo is two and a half years and it
[39:36]takes anywhere from seven to ten sessions you can't just go one
[39:42]session expect hey please can you just erase it with a magical
[39:45]photoshop eraser tool there's no such thing no they have to remove
[39:49]pigment after pigment and it's very painful brothers and sisters it's much
[39:54]more painful to remove a tattoo than to get it i'm an
[39:57]expert now should start my own shop so seven to ten sessions
[40:03]to remove that tattoo and lastly and obviously this is not the
[40:08]least last but not least it costs much more expensive it's much
[40:13]more expensive to remove a tattoo than to get it so it
[40:17]may cost you two hundred fifty dollars to get it but it
[40:20]will cost you two thousand five hundred dollars to remove it it
[40:23]will cost you thousands of dollars each session i i read it's
[40:27]about four to five hundred dollars on average seven to ten sessions
[40:30]so you're talking about two to five grand to remove a small
[40:35]lousy tattoo of a puppy or a cat or i love you
[40:36]or any other thing that you put on your body and finally
[40:41]i forgot this that it may leave many times scarring on your
[40:45]body so they'll scar it it's not going to be a clean
[40:47]erasing of the of the tattoo for all these reasons brothers and
[40:53]sisters even as if islam doesn't tell us don't get a tattoo
[40:55]i think we have enough wisdom in us to understand that getting
[41:02]a tattoo serves no purpose we can easily regret it one day
[41:06]and it's not an uh an easy removal to get the tattoo
[41:10]removed off your body you're wasting money there's problems we said you
[41:15]know it could have with woman and xena and you know just
[41:22]the association and the uh stigma being stigmatized for having a uh
[41:27]for having a tattoo with all these points maybe collectively we can
[41:33]pass over you know get over one of them second third fourth
[41:38]fifth and we can say at the end of the day as
[41:41]long as you follow these rules it's not haram it's okay to
[41:43]get a tattoo but is it discouraged definitely it's discouraged because it
[41:48]serves no purpose and it's a waste of your money so with
[41:53]this i hope i have covered everything regarding tattoos and there are
[41:58]many other you know side issues that i didn't speak about for
[42:05]example maintaining tattoos sometimes it's a pain and you can't expose them
[42:09]to sunlight and if you do it's going to become light and
[42:10]you have to go and you have to have them darken it
[42:13]once again and it's painful so there are many other issues possible
[42:17]problems that you may run into it's just not worth it when
[42:21]you read about all the hassle and all the issues that come
[42:24]with tattoos it is just not worth it why do i even
[42:28]go get a tattoo to begin with it's not going to serve
[42:32]any purpose it's not going to make me a better human being
[42:33]it's not going to make me wealthier more intelligent yes for some
[42:37]people it makes them feel better maybe it's a matter of self-esteem
[42:43]because it makes them feel more accepted and this just shows us
[42:45]that we're looking for the wrong the wrong factors to feel accepted
[42:51]if i have to get a tattoo to feel like to be
[42:52]accepted with my friends maybe i need to change my friends i
[42:57]shouldn't need to prove to my friends that i'm cool because of
[43:02]a lousy tattoo what is that gonna do and that's another problem
[43:04]that many youth suffer from they take they get a tattoo because
[43:09]of peer pressure they're pressured into getting it and this is even
[43:14]worse because you don't even want it you're just doing it for
[43:16]other people so go through all of that hassle that i spoke
[43:20]about right now for 40 minutes because i want to please other
[43:23]people and subhanallah when it comes to pleasing allah we don't really
[43:27]want to do much five-minute prayer is too much for me i'm
[43:32]too lazy to please allah subhanahu with a five-minute prayer that's all
[43:36]benefits for you absolutely no harms but when it comes to pleasing
[43:42]other human beings we will do so many crazy things if there's
[43:44]any questions i'll take them if not we will end in sha
[43:46]allah yes brother can can we get tattoos of the names of
[44:04]the imams i mentioned first of all you shouldn't because it doesn't
[44:08]you know really prove that you're a believer or anything but can
[44:12]you or can you not do it according to most scholars you
[44:16]can for the same reason i mentioned because it's not being placed
[44:20]on the skin it's being placed beneath under the skin on the
[44:24]dermis so that's why it would not be an issue when it
[44:28]comes to janaba and and najasa and whatnot because it's under the
[44:31]skin so you can't even touch it that's on top of the
[44:38]skin not beneath the skin under the skin does not become ninjas
[44:41]that is that remains taher so that's not a problem according to
[44:46]most there are some especially before they used to raise this issue
[44:50]but most contemporary say it is not haram to get the tattoo
[44:55]of the names of the imams with the prophet and even though
[44:57]it's highly discouraged of course but it's not haram but it's definitely
[45:00]not something that you should do because you're feeling holy if you're
[45:03]feeling holy go read some quran don't go get a tattoo name
[45:08]of imam ali salam so don't use religion as a pretext to
[45:12]get a tattoo you want to do it for your own interests
[45:14]you want to do it because it suits your fetishes and desires
[45:18]do it because of your desires don't use religion as an excuse
[45:21]to get a tattoo religion does not tell you does not want
[45:25]you to get a tattoo and even 50 swords of imam ali
[45:27]salaam will not bring you one inch closer to allah yes brother
[45:46]the pain look when it comes to pain scholars mentioned not every
[45:52]single type of pain any type of pain that you uh bring
[45:57]to your body does not necessarily mean that this is outlawed that
[46:01]this is bad or else playing sports sometimes would be bad because
[46:07]it you know requires some pain it involves some pain going to
[46:11]the gym sometimes especially the first week the first couple of weeks
[46:14]it's all pain so does that mean it's haram no going on
[46:19]a marathon sometimes especially if you're not fit this is painful for
[46:23]many people so pain suffering from pain if you do it to
[46:26]yourself it doesn't mean that it's it's haram scholars say when it
[46:32]becomes too much severe pain this is when it's not allowed when
[46:35]you're start starting to bleed and it's leading to other um you
[46:42]know physical problems or psychological problems or any health issues this is
[46:48]where islam says no this is bad but just pain we can't
[46:53]say that's halam and you know based on my understanding it's not
[46:58]too painful it is a little painful but it's not anywhere close
[47:01]to severe pain so that we use the argument of pain to
[47:05]say and suggest that it is prohibited in islam let's yeah sister
[47:09]and then we'll come back to you so they get a tattoo
[47:18]you mean so like i answered the brother is it haram according
[47:22]to most scholars it's not haram but is it discouraged yes it's
[47:26]discouraged it's something that is highly discouraged but it's not a sin
[47:31]to put the name of allah or any one of the imams
[47:35]on your body yes brother the what under the skin doesn't have
[47:47]any side do you mean physical health side effects i mean it
[47:53]could i read based on my research if you have any allergies
[47:58]if you have any skin problems if you have any heart problems
[48:01]blood problems it could but if you're a perfectly healthy person they
[48:05]claim that it's healthy and you know most people that are getting
[48:09]tattoos there is no harm but is that true i'm not sure
[48:11]that you would have to ask you know probably health professionals but
[48:16]it doesn't seem like it's too you know anything serious even if
[48:19]there are some complications it's kind of rare and it's it's nothing
[48:23]serious it hasn't been proven i guess that's what i write it
[48:30]hasn't been proven that it causes skin cancer maybe there are some
[48:33]suggestions but scientifically it hasn't been clinically proven as they say we'll
[48:39]take one more question okay two more questions and we'll end yes
[48:44]brother a tattoo of your uncle's name um well you see when
[48:59]it comes to the the different examples i'm not going to give
[49:01]you my opinion because at the end of the day that this
[49:05]is my judgment you have to make your own judgment when it
[49:10]comes to the different applications and opinions it depends i mean if
[49:13]if your uncle was a merger even then probably wouldn't make sense
[49:17]because we said islam kind of discourages getting the um tattoo but
[49:23]i mean think about it what purpose will it serve if there
[49:27]is a real meaningful purpose that it will serve for example i
[49:31]you know i put it on my my hands and every time
[49:35]i read my uncle's name i read surat al-fatiha for him maybe
[49:40]this is a weird but uh you know makes sense but even
[49:44]though it's very weird and i hope nobody has to go to
[49:48]that extent for him to read fatah for their loved ones but
[49:50]if you can find a meaningful purpose in it something that justifies
[49:55]it it's not haram we mentioned remember it's not haram these were
[50:00]some thoughts that we brought up um let's say it's a very
[50:04]small and it costs you 50 so you're not really wasting too
[50:06]much money and you're not doing any other any other uh of
[50:11]the problems that we mentioned uh you know what maybe it would
[50:15]be fine but i wouldn't encourage it definitely i would not encourage
[50:19]it yes i'm saying yes so first of all with your comment
[50:55]that many people get tattoos for entertainment purposes yes that's right but
[50:59]then again once again the last point that i raised look when
[51:03]you go to have fun you do something where the effects are
[51:07]limited they don't carry on for 50 60 years so if you
[51:12]want to have fun why do it in a way in which
[51:15]the implications and the consequences will carry for the rest of your
[51:20]life that's my point have fun in ways that you may not
[51:25]regret later so i'm 18 i'm 20.
[51:26]i want to get a nice tattoo to spice up life maybe
[51:29]in 10 20 years i'm going to change my mind i won't
[51:33]like it plus look at all the harms look you might not
[51:35]get a job people in the community might not respect you as
[51:40]and and the other problems that i mentioned so i i think
[51:43]there are much better ways of entertainment that don't have these issues
[51:47]that don't have these risks involved with them that would be much
[51:51]better and then when it comes to temporary tattoos definitely it would
[51:55]uh would be much you know better than the permanent one but
[51:59]then we would have to also analyze it through the five steps
[52:03]that i analyzed it how much does it cost you know is
[52:06]it considered xena is it not zina would it obstruct your with
[52:12]because remember we said with the permanent tattoo it's under your skin
[52:15]so it doesn't form a barrier between the water and your skin
[52:19]but with temporary tattoo i would assume it would be directly on
[52:24]the skin not under the skin or else it would be permanent
[52:27]then that potentially could be a barrier for your wavoo so you
[52:32]just have to do your research and like i did it just
[52:35]go through the five points see number one is it a barrier
[52:40]for your russo number two for the sisters is it you know
[52:43]cosmetic or not is it on the face on the or or
[52:46]the hands if it's elsewhere that's mine number three how much am
[52:50]i spending on it is it worth it or not number four
[52:52]my reputation will it affect my reputation or not and number five
[52:57]the substance of the of the tattoo itself what am i trying
[53:02]to prove with this tattoo if it's you know something indecent of
[53:04]course it may be banned for that reason if it's something religious
[53:08]then that's not encouraged if it's for entertainment purposes then that would
[53:13]be fine yes thank you so much brothers and sisters insha allah
[53:18]we will continue these lectures about these other different topics next week
[53:23]insha allah thank you for coming tonight i ask allah subhanahu ta'ala
[53:26]to bless all of you and i hope until next week nobody
[53:32]goes and gets a tattoo thank you so much
