[0:02]Alhamdulillah must I begin in the name of God the beneficent, the
[0:25]merciful, the one who has created everything in utmost mercy and may
[0:30]his peace and bless Blessings fall upon Muhammad and al- Muhammadu.
[0:55]A controversial yet important topic to discuss.
[0:59]My respected brothers and sisters, is the topic of and cursing within
[1:06]the faith of Islam is something is this something that is permissible?
[1:10]Is this something that the Quran, the sunnah of the B have
[1:17]talked about, have discussed.
[1:17]Do we have any obligations either to avoid or to engage in
[1:21]this action?
[1:22]If we do have to do, who does the fall upon?
[1:26]In many of our zarat, for example, zat, we find there are
[1:32]many instances of being placed on the enemies of Im Hussein and
[1:35]the enemies of the family of the holy prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
[1:43]You find in many of the this is a common theme.
[1:47]However, this is a controversial issue.
[1:50]Is this something that is accepted?
[1:51]Does someone who have is this something that they are allowed to
[1:57]do?
[1:56]Therefore my dear brothers and sisters inshallah today very briefly we will
[2:00]discuss this topic inshallah before after allow.
[2:13]The first point that we have to discuss my dear brothers and
[2:20]sisters is that there is a difference between cursing and swearing, using
[2:27]profanity, using bad words, cussing, using cuss words.
[2:32]There is a difference.
[2:35]Linguistically we understand that swearing, cursing is using, you know, intrinsically negative
[2:40]words, inappropriate words that you would not use in any normal setting.
[2:45]Cursing in the Islamic paradigm, it's not doing some voodoo magic, you
[2:54]know, or uh sending negative energy or, you know, anything like that.
[2:58]is asking Allahel to not send down his mercy upon the enemies
[3:04]of Allah and the enemies of that is all that there is
[3:15]to it.
[3:15][laughter] So there's no profanity involved.
[3:21]There is nothing you know evil involved.
[3:23]It's simply saying because this person is an enemy of Allah because
[3:28]this person is an enemy of Allah because this person is an
[3:31]enemy of the family of Allah that are mentioned within the holy
[3:38]Quran these individuals are not deserving of divine mercy that's all there
[3:45]is to it thus you find the companions of one individual in
[3:54]early Islamic history Abi Sufyan his companions would swear at Imm Ali
[4:01]peace be upon him and his companions.
[4:05]However, when the companions of Imam Ali wanted to swear back at
[4:12]him, he would tell them no.
[4:13]This is the logic of someone that has no logic.
[4:16]When you don't have proper words to use, you don't have proper
[4:19]things to say, then you resort to swearing.
[4:22]You resort to cussing.
[4:22]Because if you can actually formulate a sentence, you know, in a
[4:26]civilized manner, then you don't need to swear.
[4:28]So he says, "Do not do this." The appropriate thing that we
[4:35]do against the enemies of Allah is we use which is simply
[4:38]saying, "Ya Allah, do not send your mercy on this person." Doesn't
[4:43]that only make sense?
[4:44]Why is it that someone that is an enemy of they deserve
[4:49]to have the mercy of God?
[4:50]They don't.
[4:51]Thus, you know, it is not something that goes against logic.
[4:54]It is not something that goes against.
[4:56]In fact, logic and dictate that we curse those people who are
[5:02]against Allahawel.
[5:05]You know, in that uh verse that I mentioned early on, Allahh
[5:11]states Those who harm or bother Allahel and the prophet what happens?
[5:20]We just leave them alone.
[5:27]God will send his his curses upon them in this and in
[5:35]the and then a humiliating punishment will be awaiting them.
[5:41]So logically there is no issue with this.
[5:44]Is there swearing within the Holy Quran?
[5:48]No.
[5:48]This is a misconception.
[5:51]Some people say, well, you know, the Quran sometimes swears.
[5:53]No, this is not true.
[5:54]Some people will say, but look at doesn't the Holy Quran say,
[6:06]isn't the Quran saying that Jews are like donkeys?
[6:09]No.
[6:09]No.
[6:10]No.
[6:11]This is not the case.
[6:11]The Quran is simply drawing an analogy.
[6:13]The same way that you have an animal that carries books from
[6:18]one area to another, you know, kind of like U-Haul.
[6:19]There was no U-Haul at the time.
[6:21]Well, that that U-Haul, that animal, right, that's carrying all the stuff
[6:27]is not going to benefit simply by having the book being on
[6:30]its back or in the trunk.
[6:30]The same way if you just carry the book or even if
[6:35]you memorize the holy book of Allah but you don't apply it
[6:37]you will be like that U-Haul truck you'll be like a donkey
[6:41]that carries books without benefiting.
[6:42]So this is simply an analogy.
[6:44]This is not to say that any given people are like donkeys.
[6:47]The Quran is not doing this here.
[6:51]So the Quran is not mocking.
[6:53]It's simply describing the actions of certain groups of people.
[6:58]And you know it's interesting because the Quran says this in regards
[7:04]to Ben is honestly this can be said of most modern Muslims
[7:08]as well.
[7:09]We might have some people mashallah most beautiful recitation you know it's
[7:16]it's like an angel singing in your ear most beautiful tawa of
[7:20]the holy Quran but then in their hearts nothing is carried within
[7:25]and in their actions there is no practical application once you know
[7:33]the famous companion of kumad you've all read at the battle of
[7:39]the night before He heard from the enemy camps someone reciting such
[7:45]beautiful Quran.
[7:44]He was mesmerized.
[7:46]He's like wow this late at night someone is reciting Quran.
[7:50]He was you know just like dumbfounded came to him.
[7:56]He saw that he was like in a trance.
[7:57]He said don't be fooled.
[8:01]So Kum was confused.
[8:01]What do you mean don't be fooled?
[8:03]This man is reciting Quran.
[8:04]You know is there anything wrong with reciting Quran?
[8:08]So he said don't be confused.
[8:12]Now the battle of for those who are not uh familiar just
[8:19]a quick refresher it is the battle of the those people who
[8:22]left Islam those extremists who had their own extreme interpretation of the
[8:25]holy Quran they came and they fought against the khalifa of their
[8:29]time after the battlefield and that's when the kawaraj were for the
[8:37]most part destroyed is walking the battlefield with kum and he said
[8:41]look at this body, this enemy who who killed Muslims, who fought
[8:44]against the Imam of his time, the divinely appointed righteous Khalifa.
[8:50]He said, "Yes." He says, "This is that same man who was
[8:54]reciting that lovely Quran that you know uh that serenated you last
[8:57]night." So don't be fooled.
[9:04]You know within the holy Quran uh some people might say there's
[9:10]another example of swearing and is it true that the Quran swears
[9:13]we say no they say what about this verse in regards to
[9:19]write that former companion of Moses peace be upon him the holy
[9:24]Quran states in they say isn't the Quran comparing someone to a
[9:31]dog isn't that swearing again this is simply drawing an analogy If
[9:35]you see a dog and it's barking at you, if you bark
[9:38]at it, it's going to bark back.
[9:39]If you leave it alone, it's going to bark back.
[9:41]So, might as well leave it alone.
[9:42]It's simply drawing an analogy.
[9:44]It's not to say that the Quran condones swearing.
[9:47]So, the Quran, yes, speaks and analogies, uses parables, it gives examples,
[9:53]but it does not swear.
[9:55]In fact, there is no other clear evidence than the Quran itself.
[10:02]The Holy Quran says, Allahel states to the believers at the time
[10:15]of Jah you know after the uh of do not swear at
[10:24]those false gods.
[10:24]Now if there is someone deserving of swearing right even though we
[10:28]do not believe in swearing if there is someone to be deserving
[10:32]of swearing it would be these false gods right they don't do
[10:36]anything and yet these people they worship them they dedicate their time
[10:39]and their life and their energy and their worship to them if
[10:42]there is anything that is dedicated that should have dedicated swearing sessions
[10:47]at them it should be these but the Quran says no do
[10:52]not swear at these idols these false gods because number one swearing
[10:57]is not the logic of Islam and swearing is not the logic
[11:02]of the Holy Quran and number two because when you swear at
[11:06]the their idols which they consider holy then they will respond in
[11:15]kind.
[11:16]They will begin to swear at your, you know, sacred beliefs.
[11:21]They will begin to swear at God.
[11:23]But you when you swear you understand that these are just idols.
[11:27]But they will swear at the creator of the universe without knowledge
[11:30]out of ignorance.
[11:32]So in order to avoid this so that Allah's name is not
[11:35]desecrated they don't start swearing at God.
[11:37]Then you don't swear at their idols.
[11:39]Yes we do.
[11:41]We use logic to prove that these idols don't benefit.
[11:43]Right?
[11:44]Similar to how prophet Ibraim used logic and used you know a
[11:49]very beautiful uh physical analogy to illustrate this concept to them.
[11:54]But uh we do not accept this.
[11:56]In fact, I I believe that no valid heavenly book would accept
[12:00]the logic of swearing.
[12:03]Even look at the Bible.
[12:04]Ephesians 4:29.
[12:06]It says, "Do not let any vulgar talk come out of your
[12:09]mouth." Using profanity, bad words, swear words.
[12:13]This is vulgar.
[12:15]Islam does not condone this.
[12:15]Yes.
[12:16]But cursing in the sense that just asking, "Oh Allah, do not
[12:21]have mercy on your enemies." This is not vulgar.
[12:22]There is nothing wrong with this.
[12:26]So if we understand therefore that there is nothing logically or intrinsically
[12:33]wrong with cursing and we understand the proper definition of cursing and
[12:38]we understand that there's a difference between swearing and cursing and the
[12:40]Quran does not engage in swearing.
[12:42]Neither did neither did the imams.
[12:48]But there was cursing upon the enemies of Allah and his prophet.
[12:52]How do we direct our curse?
[12:56]Is there a Quranic obligation to curse?
[12:58]Is cursing other than the verses that we mentioned even mentioned within
[13:02]the holy Quran?
[13:01]Yes.
[13:02]scholars who have taken a look at this topic, they found 37
[13:09]verses that directly and explicitly talk about cursing.
[13:13]And these 37 verses, they can broadly be grouped into 10 categories.
[13:23]Number one, the a very common and recurring theme within the Holy
[13:30]Quran is cursing the devil.
[13:32]The where does where can we find this in these verses?
[13:37]Allah subhana t states the devil is speaking.
[13:51]He says I am better than him.
[13:53]Him being Adam, prophet Adam peace be upon him.
[13:57]You created me from fire and you created him from dirt.
[14:00]Now I don't understand what exactly is the logic.
[14:03]Why is fire better than dirt?
[14:04]But this is the logic of the devil.
[14:10]Allahel said leave the heavenly abode for you are now cursed until
[14:21]the day of judgment.
[14:24]The curses of Allah will constantly be falling upon the devil.
[14:26]There is not a second from the beginning of time well or
[14:32]be the beginning of this story until the end of time the
[14:34]day of judgment that the curses of Allah do not fall upon
[14:39]the devil.
[14:41]So yes in fact there are many other verses but this is
[14:43]a common and recurring theme cursing the devil.
[14:46]Why do we curse the devil?
[14:48]Number one all our problems [laughter] all stem from the devil.
[14:54]Had it not been forl, we would have been chilling right now
[14:56]in heaven, you know, with all the heavenly uh cocktails and the
[15:01]heavenly juices and the heavenly dates and the heavenly uh, you know,
[15:05]pleasures, the rivers and the honey and all that stuff.
[15:06]Flying, you can do whatever you want.
[15:08]Play Fortnite, whatever it is that you want to do, uh, you
[15:12]can do.
[15:13]Why can't we do that?
[15:14]Because of the devil.
[15:17]Because he intentionally misled our forefathers and mothers.
[15:21]He the devil is our constant enemy in this life.
[15:28]And one way we seek refuge from the devil and we head
[15:36]towards Allah is we constantly curse the devil.
[15:37]Allahel himself says from that time until the end of times his
[15:43]curses will fall upon him.
[15:43]So who am I to say that you know what maybe I
[15:47]don't have the right to curse him?
[15:48]No.
[15:48]Allah himself is cursing the devil and he is also our enemies
[15:51]the same way that he is the enemy of God.
[15:54]Therefore we engage in cursing of the devil.
[15:57]A second example a second category where within the holy Quran the
[16:04]curses of Allah fall upon a certain people.
[16:09]This is very dangerous my dear brothers and sisters.
[16:12]You know, alhamdulillah, we have the privilege of being Muslims, having the
[16:16]privilege and honor of having Islam imbued within our lives.
[16:21]But we have to be careful because one category is when people
[16:25]see Islam and they are convinced that this is the path of
[16:32]but they reject and especially in the verses that we will see
[16:35]regarding the Jews of Medina, the curses of Allah fall upon these
[16:39]people.
[16:40]Allah subhana wa ta'ala statesman.
[16:54]Therefore, a book from Allahawel was descended upon them.
[17:03]When this book came, what did they do?
[17:13]They saw this booked but they rejected it out of ego out
[17:22]of insistence on staying with the old ways.
[17:22]You don't want to abandon the old ways.
[17:27]The curses of Allah upon the So therefore this is another category
[17:35]where allahel he himself curses a group of people.
[17:41]So not only the devil but even human beings.
[17:45]Third my dear brothers and sisters.
[17:49]A third category is people who harass the prophets and bother them.
[17:56]You know sometimes we bother our neighbors we bother our spouses.
[18:00]you know, we're not on our best behavior, but you know, as
[18:05]long as we try to do better um after bothering someone, we
[18:07]go and we try to repent and make it up and we
[18:10]strive to not do it again.
[18:10]You know, Allahh inshallah will forgive us.
[18:13]But there is a special type of punishment reserved for someone who
[18:17]harasses prophets.
[18:19]A prophet does not even bother an ant.
[18:22]A prophet cannot bother another human being.
[18:25]So for people to be bothering these prophets, these are evil, vile
[18:29]people.
[18:30]And you find in this verse that I'm about to mention, Allahel
[18:33]is not the person doing the is not the entity doing the
[18:38]the cursing.
[18:38]Allah subhana t statesman there are people from that have been cursed
[18:51]by whom Allahel the angels No, upon humans, the prophets.
[19:05]So, David and Jesus, peace be upon him, they were the ones
[19:08]doing the cursing because they were, you know, being harassed by these
[19:10]people so much.
[19:14]That's because they would transgress and they would harass and bother.
[19:21]Therefore, these prophets, they would curse them.
[19:22]Yes, the prophets had immense patience.
[19:24]But sometimes you know when people see h for so much and
[19:29]they continue refusing it.
[19:29]Even the prophets they would reach a point they would start cursing
[19:33]these people.
[19:34]May Allahh make us amongst people that when we see h we
[19:39]accept it.
[19:40]When we see h we do not try to deny we open
[19:45]our hearts to h.
[19:44]When we see h we accept and when we accept we stay
[19:48]on the course of ham.
[19:51]A fourth category of people that are cursed.
[19:55]Allah subhana t states in the holy Quran those that hide what
[20:10]Allah subhana w ta'ala has descended and revealed from signs and guidance
[20:18]after Allah has revealed it to people those people Allah will curse
[20:33]them and one more person the the cursors meaning people people will
[20:38]curse the these individuals people will curse believers will curse these people
[20:44]that try to hide the truth so you find so far allahel
[20:49]has done certain uh categories of cursing cursing.
[20:50]The prophets have done certain categories of cursing.
[20:55]And here even the people who are cursors, they do cursing as
[21:00]well.
[21:03]A fifth category, my dear brothers and sisters.
[21:07]Allah subhana t states in the holy Quran.
[21:19]One of the greatest sins my dear brothers sers is to kill
[21:25]a fellow brother and a fellow believing brother or sister.
[21:28]Murder.
[21:29]Murder is amongst the highest of sins.
[21:32]It's a immense crime.
[21:33]You're depriving someone of life.
[21:36]Allah.
[21:35]All life is a gift from Allah.
[21:38]Who am I to deprive someone else from life?
[21:43]This is a grave grave grave sin.
[21:45]Allahel says the consequence the punishment for murder is eternal abode in
[21:58]hellfire.
[22:04]And Allah will be angry at him.
[22:10]Allah invoking the anger of God and Allah will curse him and
[22:17]Allah will prepare for him a great punishment.
[22:18]you know very strong language and you find you know during early
[22:25]Islam some people who they would you know are commonly considered to
[22:29]be Sahabah they would kill people left and right you know some
[22:34]people praise him because he had some efforts in memorizing the Quran
[22:37]spreading the Quran teaching people Quran okay that's not bad but this
[22:45]was a man who would kill people left and right you know
[22:47]even I I would say probably the Mongols if they read about
[22:52]him they would be amazed at how vicious he was.
[22:53]He loved to bathe in blood and he would kill it doesn't
[22:57]matter where he would kill Muslims in Medina.
[22:59]He would kill Muslims in Mecca.
[23:01]He would kill in front of the Ka for God's sake.
[23:04]That's what the Quran says.
[23:09]You kill a believing uh individual on purpose then your punishment is
[23:14]eternal about in hellfire.
[23:14]Allah is angry at you.
[23:18]Allah curses you and Allah will prepare for you immense punishment.
[23:22]Number six, Allahh states those who break their covenant with Allah.
[23:35]If Allah has a covenant with a person or with a group
[23:40]of people and they break it, then Allah subhana ta will curse
[23:42]them and he will make their hearts hard like stone.
[23:46]Number seven, Allahh states Allah subhana wa ta'ala promises hypocrites.
[24:02]Now a hypocrite can be a Muslim but it's someone that has
[24:07]one type of belief in their heart but they show something else.
[24:10]They have kufur and disbelief in their heart but they pretend to
[24:14]show iman.
[24:16]So Allah subhana wa ta'ala promises these people and the hellfire eternal
[24:20]abote in it and Allah will curse them.
[24:32]Number eight, my dear brothers and sisters, an eighth category of people
[24:40]that are cursed.
[24:41]Allah subhana ta says, that the curses of Allah fall upon those
[24:51]who oppress.
[24:54]One of the worst titles to be given, my dear brothers and
[24:58]sisters, is to be considered an oppressor.
[25:01]One of the worst types of punishment reserved by Allahawel and the
[25:08]most severe of curses is upon an oppressor.
[25:09]Someone that violates the rights of others.
[25:12]Someone that transgresses that harms others this you know immense immense immense
[25:19]punishment awaits.
[25:22]Number nine, Allah subhana t at the verse of states those individuals
[25:35]in the context of the story is those Christians who came and
[25:38]they wanted to you know debate the prophet and they can't they
[25:43]were constantly debating and debating and they didn't really accept.
[25:47]So allahel says to the prophet tell them okay we debated and
[25:50]I showed you the evidence but you don't want to accept then
[25:55]let's do this instead let's come you bring your children we bring
[26:00]our children you we bring our women and you bring your women
[26:11]ourselves and yourselves now it's kind of obvious that you would bring
[26:17]yourself If you're if you're inviting someone to this um that's kind
[26:22]of obvious.
[26:24]What's the point of saying this?
[26:26]Well, their children, they brought their children.
[26:27]Our children, who were the children of Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, I im
[26:34]Hassan and IM Hussein.
[26:36][laughter] These are the children of Allah.
[26:38]Yes, they are his grandsons, his but they're also his children according
[26:42]to the Quran.
[26:45]your women and our women.
[26:48]Who were the women of peace be upon him?
[26:54]So they brought themselves and came.
[26:56]Where does Im Ali peace be upon him fit?
[26:58][laughter] Why was he there?
[27:01]He's not a child of Allah.
[27:02]He's the cousin ofah.
[27:04]He's not a child.
[27:04]He's not the woman of Allah.
[27:07]The only Quranic category that could possibly fit is the is the
[27:16]self of what Muhammad then we will do the and we will
[27:33]ask Allah subhana ta to send his curses upon whoever is the
[27:39]liar.
[27:38]The story says that when these Christians came and they saw the
[27:44]N and the faces of the Bates, they said by Allah, if
[27:47]these people would ask Allah to move mountains, Allah would do it
[27:52]for them.
[27:50]And they did not agree to do them because they did not
[27:54]want the curses of Allah to fall upon them.
[27:56]Number 10, my dear brothers and sisters, and this is the final
[28:02]category that we will discuss.
[28:03]Those who hurt Allah and his messenger.
[28:09]Allah subhana ta states in the holy Quran.
[28:24]those who hurt and harm Allah and his prophet and we understand
[28:34]that if you hurt someone that is beloved to Allah that is
[28:43]also harming says whoever hurts Fatima has hurt me.
[28:46]Therefore, if you hurt lady fat, that means you hurt.
[28:51]Meaning that the curses of Allah will fall upon you in this
[28:55]dunya and in the and Allah will prepare a humiliating punishment for
[29:03]you.
[29:01]Thus, my dear brothers and sisters, you know, there are many other
[29:07]verses, but these are just 10 broad categories.
[29:08]Cursing is firmly established within the faith.
[29:10]We cannot say that there's no cursing in Islam.
[29:13]No, there is.
[29:14]What you don't just curse you know your neighbor if you have
[29:16]a dispute some mother is you know when they get angry they
[29:20]curse their kids.
[29:20]No this is not acceptable.
[29:21]There are Quranic categories whereby we curse the enemies of Allah the
[29:27]enemies of the prophets those oppressors those who do evil those who
[29:31]break their covenants you know certain categories.
[29:33]Therefore, we find even within the of and right early on at
[29:43]the head of Islam, this was something that was accepted.
[29:47]This was something that was done.
[29:52]It was not an innovation that came later on in his book.
[29:55]He mentions that during he would walk behind sallallahu alaihi wasallam and
[30:06]he would mock him and he did this so much such that
[30:08]at one point in time cursed him.
[30:13]So yes people who hurt they deserve the curses of Allah.
[30:18]Ibi Hadid the great scholar he narrates a story that once Abu
[30:27]Sufyan he wanted to go out of the masjid but he was
[30:31]old he was almost blind his son had to hold his arm
[30:36]and take him back home they passed by saw them and in
[30:43]front of all Muslims in front of all the believers he said,
[30:49]"May Allah curse the one guiding and the one being guided." This
[30:55]is a curse of during his life upon people that some consider
[31:01]to be sacred.
[31:04]How do we put two and two?
[31:07]How do we reconcile this?
[31:08]Let's use our critical thinking.
[31:10]And inshallah, I will conclude with this.
[31:12]My dear brothers and sisters, peace be upon him because there were
[31:16]people that hurt him so much.
[31:21]They caused him so much pain in the mosque of Kufa in
[31:26]his every time in prayer.
[31:27]He would curse his enemies and specifically three people and these three
[31:36]people they hurt the family of and his family so much that
[31:43]he would dedicate special curses to them.
[31:44]Thus my dear brothers and sisters we should not be shy to
[31:47]curse the enemies of God for Allah himself numerous times in the
[31:49]Quran does so.
[31:52]We should not be shy to curse those oppressors for the Quran
[31:56]does so.
[31:58]We should not be shy to curse those who hurt the prophet
[32:02]peace be upon him and his family because hurting the family of
[32:06]the prophet is akin to hurting the prophet.
[32:08]May Allah subh send his abundant curses on his enemies and the
[32:11]enemies of Muhammad and Muhammad.
[32:15]May Allah subhana wa ta'ala make us amongst those who are not
[32:19]deprived of the mercy of Allahel.
[32:21]Make may Allah subhana wa ta'ala grant us the of being not
[32:27]amongst those whom Allah has displeased but amongst those whom Allah has
[32:30]pleased with.
[32:31]May our souls go back to Allah.
[32:34]May Allahh accept our in this month of Ramadan.
[32:37]May Allah subhana wa ta'ala accept our fasting, accept our prayers, accept
[32:42]our recitation of the holy Quran.
[32:44]May Allah grant us to do more, engage in more worship.
[32:49]May Allah subh rest the souls of our those who have contributed
[32:53]towards this, those who have instituted this and for the souls of
[32:59]our departed ones.
[32:59]Let us recite before that a loud salawat.
[33:26]My respected brothers and sisters at the uh Bedford Islamic Society community
[33:33]may Allah bless you all.
[33:35]It's uh you know, alhamdulillah, not the best of circumstances that we
[33:39]are engaging in this you know, virtual uh majus, but alhamdulillah, you
[33:43]know, despite the storm, we're still able to connect, still able to
[33:48]benefit inshallah.

[33:51]uh try to you know, stay at home or be careful when
[33:55]you're driving.
