If by opening a bank account, I know that I will receiving interest from the bank, am I still allowed to do that? Sayed Sistani says it is permissible, whether in a Muslim country or non-Muslim country. For the non-Muslim, we discussed that it’s permissible to take interest from a non-Muslim. What about taking interest from a Muslim? The problem with usury is not about taking the interest, but stipulating the condition of interest. For example, if someone loans us $100,000 and out of kindness, we give back with an additional 2% every month, then this is permissible. However, if we are stipulating with a bank to give us a certain interest rate, then this is not permissible. In summary, we can receive interest as long as we don’t stipulate or fight for it (i.e. it’s more like a reward, not interest).
