[0:06]i begin in the name of the almighty god the compassionate the
[0:12]merciful the one who has created everything in utmost perfection and may
[0:16]the peace and blessings of the almighty god be upon his pure
[0:20]and beloved messenger the peak of his creation the symbol of humanity
[0:25]the holy prophet muhammad and his immaculate progeny of the bait peace
[0:38]be upon them especially the leader of our time the awaited savior
[0:42]al-imam al-mahdi may allah hasten his reappearance and make us all amongst
[0:50]the sincere and dedicated servants respected brothers and sisters assalamu alaikum warahmatullahi
[0:59]i extend to you my sincerest congratulations on the birth of the
[1:05]commander of the faithful imam this is a very joyous and auspicious
[1:13]occasion for us as we are infinitely thanking the almighty god we
[1:22]are infinitely grateful to allah subhanahu wa ta'ala for blessing us with
[1:28]such a leader and we ask allah to allah to never take
[1:31]away the will of our hearts there are many dimensions to examine
[1:40]in the life of amir al-mu'min in these few minutes in our
[1:47]english part of the program which will be followed with a short
[1:51]arabic presentation as well i would like to share with you one
[1:56]very important question that many people have about imam ali and we'll
[2:05]spend a few minutes answering this critical question some people ask imam
[2:14]has such a an important place in our religion the belief in
[2:20]his leadership the belief in his imam is an integral part of
[2:31]islam without it islam is incomplete that's because after the prophet sallallahu
[2:37]alaihi declared to the world that imam ali is the wali is
[2:42]the mawla is the ruler is the successor after him allah subhanahu
[2:47]wa ta'ala revealed this verse in surah today i've perfected my blessings
[3:08]upon you and today i've accepted islam as your religion what does
[3:15]this mean what is the implied meaning of a verse like this
[3:19]if someone tells you today i'm satisfied with you what's the implied
[3:26]meaning it means yesterday something was incomplete now i'm satisfied with this
[3:32]if you're working on a project and the one that you're dedicating
[3:38]the project to tells you today now i've accepted your project that
[3:43]means previously it was incomplete when allah states that now i've completed
[3:51]your religion now i've accepted islam as your religion the implied meaning
[3:55]is that if you omit ali ibn abi ta'ala islam from islam
[3:58]that's not an islam that allah wants that's not islam that allah
[4:03]is satisfied with that's an incomplete faith and this is from the
[4:07]quran so we know how important the place of imam ali is
[4:13]but the question is that many people have how come allah does
[4:17]not mention the name of imam ali in the quran isn't he
[4:20]our imam we have to believe in him he represents the prophet
[4:24]we take our religious values and teachings from him where is his
[4:27]name then how come god did not mention his name in the
[4:32]holy quran in answering this very critical question we will briefly analyze
[4:39]several dimensions to this question number one when you're searching for the
[4:47]truth and the path of the truth you don't necessarily search for
[4:58]names you search for qualities and attributes allah subhanahu ta'ala wants us
[5:02]to focus on qualities and attributes why is it that we believe
[5:08]in prophet muhammad many people in history have claimed to be prophets
[5:13]once i was in california for a program and i was walking
[5:17]on the street when a man came up to me and he
[5:21]says i'm a prophet follow my message i told him you really
[5:26]you're a prophet what's your miracle he says i don't need a
[5:29]miracle i told him that how are you going to prove to
[5:33]me that you're a prophet he's like anybody can be a prophet
[5:35]i'm not saying i'm the only prophet on earth there could be
[5:38]other prophets i don't need a miracle anyone can make that claim
[5:45]but the intellect teaches us that you follow a prophet who's infallible
[5:48]who has a miracle who is connected to allah ta'ala if you
[5:53]see a person committing sins violations his knowledge is incomplete automatically you
[6:00]know this person is not a prophet we examine attributes characteristics and
[6:08]qualities in the holy quran allah allah has filled his blessed book
[6:13]with the qualities and attributes of amir and mu'min and you can
[6:18]find this in hadith that all muslims have narrated not just shia
[6:22]sources hundreds of verses in the holy quran were revealed about amir
[6:30]al-mu'min examine those qualities one example of those verses is chapter 5
[6:39]verse 55.
[6:39]you can't forget this verse 5 55 easy to remember allah declares
[6:45]to us the qualities of those who are his awliya those who
[6:51]have guardianship over us allah states innama innama in arabic means only
[6:58]and only it's a restriction this is restricted to these people only
[7:02]to these beings your guardian is allah what and his messenger who's
[7:11]the third one who's the third category those who have full faith
[7:18]who are they [Music] those who establish prayers and they give zakat
[7:32]they give charity while in the state of ruku look at the
[7:38]history of this verse and the sources that speak about this verse
[7:42]allah revealed this verse when a poor man a beggar walked into
[7:48]the mosque of the prophet sallallahu alaihi imam al ibn abi al
[7:52]islam was in one corner praying and he was praying we can
[7:58]conclude from the narrations the mustahab salah he was praying when this
[8:02]man came to him the ma the imam was was in his
[8:05]rook he asked the imam for help help me give me something
[8:07]now the imam is praying he wasn't carrying you know cash on
[8:13]him the imam was wearing a ring in the state of the
[8:20]imam extended his hand signaling to him to take the ring this
[8:24]is my sadaqa for you this is my act of charity the
[8:28]man took it and left from the outside it seems like a
[8:32]very simple event right that night the prophet came to see imam
[8:37]ali he met him after salah the prophet salallahu alaihi told them
[8:41]ali what did you do today imam said why what happened no
[8:48]tell me what did you two didn't it do today jibra il
[8:50]just came on me and he has revealed a verse in your
[8:56]honor you've done something so great in the eyes of allah subhana
[8:59]wa ta'ala that he documented it in the quran the imam alayhi
[9:03]salaam told him what happened see if you're looking for your guardian
[9:06]the leader whom you follow it's in the quran look at these
[9:12]attributes look at these qualities or in surat nisa verse 59 459
[9:17]allah commands us who to follow obey god and who his messenger
[9:27]and the guardians the guardians of your affairs who are the imams
[9:35]of al-bait we know that what is meant here is imam ali
[9:37]ibn abi talib and the imam's why because when the quran tells
[9:42]you to follow someone unconditionally follow god unconditionally follow the prophet unconditionally
[9:50]without any conditions we know that the next category those who have
[10:00]guardianship they must be infallible because allah would only tell you to
[10:05]follow someone unconditionally if they are infallible but if they can make
[10:13]mistakes if they can cause you to deviate if they make errors
[10:17]allah will not tell you to follow them unconditionally because that puts
[10:22]you in a contradiction imagine the one whom you have to obey
[10:26]and follow commits a sin do you follow them in that sin
[10:28]or no if you do you're committing the sin too if you
[10:32]don't you're not following the verse because the verse says follow them
[10:36]just like you follow god so we find that the qualities of
[10:42]imam ali alayhi salaam are mentioned in the quran that's the first
[10:47]point very briefly and this is a very effective way my dear
[10:50]brothers and sisters we follow imam ali salam because allah blessed him
[10:55]with these qualities the quran introduces him through his qualities you know
[11:00]sometimes let's say i'm introducing my friend to you i can tell
[11:02]you here my friend his name is x and i introduce him
[11:08]to you but sometimes if i'm introducing my friend to you i
[11:12]prepare the grounds and i tell you now i'm introducing the most
[11:18]truthful person the most honest person the most humble person and then
[11:21]i bring my friend forward isn't this more effective because now you
[11:26]will focus on the qualities of my friend this is the first
[11:31]point and the first aspect the second point my dear brothers and
[11:34]sisters we know that allah created us for what for a trial
[11:40]allah has given us the intellect allah wants us to search search
[11:45]for the truth your professor at the best school that you'll go
[11:52]to does your professor give you all the answers no the professor
[11:56]trains you how to find the answers but when the time for
[12:01]the examination comes your teacher is not going to give you all
[12:04]the answers you have to search for those answers allah has given
[12:09]us the tools to find out who his representatives are and what
[12:13]their qualities are and how we follow them allah has given us
[12:17]the tools but allah is not going to give us all the
[12:20]answers there in one book you have to research you have to
[12:25]use your intellect you have to examine history because life is a
[12:31]trial it's an examination that continues for decades you live 70 years
[12:37]your trial is 70 years so that's why some things allah doesn't
[12:41]just clearly mention in the quran he wants you to investigate them
[12:47]he wants you to go and research them that's the second point
[12:51]here the third point my dear brothers and sisters if allah had
[12:58]explicitly and you'll see why i say explicitly soon when we talk
[13:02]about the fourth point if allah had explicitly mentioned the name of
[13:05]imam ali alayhi islam in the quran do you know what would
[13:11]have happened to the quran any ideas what do you think would
[13:17]have happened to the quran when the umayyads were ruling muawiyah started
[13:24]a tradition of cursing imam ali alayhi salaam for 70 years on
[13:30]the pulpits do you know this happened to the muslim ummah after
[13:35]ma'awiyah they would open their friday sermon by cursing imam ali salah
[13:39]what a tragedy this is what the umayyads did do you think
[13:46]if allah mentioned his name clearly in the quran they would have
[13:51]accepted that quran they would have omitted those verses in the quran
[13:54]and allah does not want anyone to change the quran allah wants
[13:58]the quran to stay intact till the day of judgment had the
[14:02]name of the imam been clearly explicitly mentioned in the quran the
[14:06]enemies of imam ali al-isram would have tried to omit this verse
[14:10]from the quran and that would have opened the door for people
[14:13]to tamper with the quran and play with the quran just like
[14:16]people did with the torah and the bible allah doesn't want that
[14:21]to happen and this definitely would have happened after the prophet sallallahu
[14:27]alaihi so allah gave us a plan such that the quran is
[14:30]kept intact for those who want the truth the truth is there
[14:33]that's the third point here's the fourth point and the most important
[14:39]point the question assumes that the name of imam ali al-islam is
[14:45]not mentioned in the quran right that's the assumption many of our
[14:49]scholars and researchers today are examining verses in the holy quran and
[14:54]a number of our scholars and researchers have been able to demonstrate
[15:00]beyond any doubt with sufficient evidence and proof that the name of
[15:07]imam ali ibn abi talib is mentioned in the quran where this
[15:12]may be surprising to some of you but i sh i will
[15:17]share with you the verse in which the name of imam ali
[15:20]ibn abi talib is actually mentioned in the quran in order to
[15:25]see where the imam's name is mentioned it's important for us to
[15:32]remember the dua that prophet ibrahim alaihissalam made allah talks about the
[15:36]dua of prophet ibrahim in surah 84.
[15:40]prophet ibrahim makes a request from allah he says to allah oh
[15:52]allah give me a tongue of truth amongst the later generations suratu
[16:00]verse 84 what does this mean tongue of truth in arabic when
[16:07]you say tongue of truth that's a symbolic way of saying o
[16:13]allah give me a good reputation give me someone who will carry
[16:20]my legacy in the end of times in the later generations that's
[16:25]what ibrahim was asking for i want someone from my progeny later
[16:29]in history to come and carry my legacy revive my name keep
[16:35]my name alive that's what he asked for now prophet ibrahim when
[16:44]he makes a prayer do you think allah will answer him or
[16:49]no yes allah answered the dua of prophet ibrahim where does god
[16:54]capture that in the quran surat maryam verse 50.
[16:59]what does allah state in surat maryam verse in this verse allah
[17:06]subhanahu wa ta'ala speaks about the family of ibrahim the sons of
[17:10]ibrahim and how allah subhanahu wa ta'ala blessed the household of ibrahim
[17:14]allah states in surat in verse 50 gave them from his mercy
[17:30]allah prophet ibrahim with his mercy with ishaq alaihissalam with isma'id and
[17:40]their progeny and the prophets of bani israel allah make them from
[17:44]the progeny of prophet ibrahim and then allah concludes the verse by
[17:50]stating and we have given them a tongue of truth a good
[17:59]reputation who is that tongue of truth now some people will tell
[18:11]you the word aliyah here is not the name of imam ali
[18:18]it's an attribute which means what hi i have a question for
[18:23]you if you look at different languages that describe the tongue we
[18:29]find that in various languages we have different descriptions for the tongue
[18:34]if your friend is truthful how would you describe his tongue in
[18:42]arabic even in english i would say his tongue is truthful it
[18:47]means he doesn't lie he's a truthful person if in arabic we
[18:56]say this if your friend talks a lot he's bold and he
[19:02]challenges you he's kind of rude right what do they say in
[19:10]arabic lisanuhu say it someone he's rude in arabic we say he
[19:16]has a long tongue what does long tongue mean that means this
[19:20]person is a little bit disrespectful talks too much cuts you off
[19:25]he objects to you he's rude he would say if a person
[19:32]uses bad language inappropriate indecent language how do you describe his telling
[19:39]dirty right even we say this in english his tongue is dirty
[19:43]because he speaks inappropriate words now my question to you have you
[19:50]ever heard anyone a person in your community a poet someone who's
[19:55]eloquent have you ever heard someone describe a tongue as being high
[19:59]the ali if he's eloquent you say this he's eloquent you say
[20:06]that in arabic that's why it's called right you say this if
[20:13]it's very eloquent and proper are words to describe a tongue that
[20:18]is eloquent but none of these languages arabic english or other similar
[20:23]languages none of them describe a tongue as being high therefore our
[20:28]scholars are saying it doesn't make sense to take the word aliyah
[20:34]here as an adjective as an attribute which means allah is saying
[20:39]i gave them prophet ibrahim and his family a high tongue what
[20:43]does a high tongue mean it's not eloquent to say in arabic
[20:49]high tongue no poet ever used that expression languages don't use this
[20:53]expression and we know the quran is at the peak of the
[20:54]eloquence the quran doesn't say something that's strange we know the tongue
[21:01]is not described as high he has a high tongue does it
[21:08]make sense this is not used that's why this leads our scholars
[21:12]to believe that the word aliyah here is not a description but
[21:18]rather the name of the commander of the faithful and if you
[21:28]look at the previous verses on surat maryam allah see he's mentioning
[21:36]names then in the next verse allah mentions the name of imam
[21:40]ali and indeed my dear brothers and sisters who supported this religion
[21:47]of islam and made this religion a successful religion such that the
[21:54]name of ibrahim was kept alive in history the quran was kept
[21:58]alive in history who was the one who gave support to this
[22:01]religion so that the prophet could broadcast this message to the world
[22:06]none other than and if you read dua that we are to
[22:16]recite friday mornings it's muslim to recite it it reminds you of
[22:19]the imam of your time in this dua the imam al-islam who
[22:25]narrates it he's talking about prophet ibrahim ibrahim asked you a tongue
[22:36]of truth you answered him so in addition to those three points
[22:51]that we mentioned no there is evidence that the name of the
[22:56]imam is actually mentioned in the quran but allah wants you to
[23:01]research to ponder every single verse but yes we do acknowledge that
[23:05]the name of the imam is not explicitly mentioned you still have
[23:10]to research these aspects for the reasons that we have already mentioned
[23:14]before that allah wants you to focus on the attributes number two
[23:18]it's a trial allah wants you to research number three if the
[23:23]name of the imam was explicitly mentioned in the quran his enemies
[23:26]would have omitted it from the quran and that would have opened
[23:31]the door to playing with the book of allah and allah did
[23:34]not want that to happen my dear brothers and sisters as we
[23:42]are commemorating the legacy and the birth of amir al-mu'min in salawat
[23:46]let us go by the spirit of this holy verse to leave
[23:54]a good reputation yes we sincerely work for allah subhanahu wa to
[24:01]allah and by sincerely working for allah allah will give you a
[24:06]good reputation good reputation means a good legacy think about your legacy
[24:11]our children think about your legacy what legacy are you leaving behind
[24:15]the imam whom you are celebrating his birth tonight he was at
[24:20]age 9 or 10 when he declared his islam and he became
[24:24]the first defender of rasulallah a young boy don't underestimate yourself start
[24:31]building your legacy from now have a good reputation for yourself for
[24:36]your family and we as muslims and specifically as followers of the
[24:43]bait we have the greatest responsibility to leave a good reputation around
[24:50]the world if you look at the hadiths my dear brothers and
[24:53]sisters that describe who the she is you know we use this
[25:00]term loosely lightly do you know who's really the shia the shia
[25:05]is the one who through his actions through his words through his
[25:12]behavior he reflects to the world who his leaders are my dear
[25:16]brothers and sisters today the people have not seen the bait they
[25:21]are debate lived centuries ago 12 to 14 centuries ago people did
[25:26]not see them today if people want to know about the bait
[25:31]who are they seeing where are they looking they're looking at us
[25:38]we are the catalogs that reflect the teachings of alibaba just like
[25:45]a company when they want to release a product they advertise for
[25:48]it they market it they have a catalog right you see the
[25:53]product you get interested in it you go and buy it and
[25:55]usually the product looks very good in the catalog right they give
[25:59]you the best image because they're trying to encourage you so you
[26:02]buy it the actual product looks not as good as it looks
[26:07]on the catalog we are walking talking catalogs who point the world
[26:12]to our imams have we been good catalogs brothers and sisters how
[26:21]would you evaluate that have we done justice to our imams on
[26:28]this night let's make a commitment with our leader in salawat to
[26:34]better reflect his justice his humbleness his services to humanity i'll share
[26:40]with you a couple of hadiths about who the shia really is
[26:52]our shia are those who offer everything that's good and beautiful in
[26:59]society everything that's good and beautiful you find the source of it
[27:05]is our true shia the one who avoids anything that's indecent inappropriate
[27:14]anything that's ugly the shia does not do it the shias are
[27:23]those who show the beauty of their actions of their akhla when
[27:29]it comes to projects to initiatives to serving others to volunteering to
[27:34]good deeds sarah they're very quick and fast their only hope is
[27:44]allah they want the mercy of allah subhanahu ta'ala for that is
[27:51]the one who is from us with us in another hadith whom
[28:00]we are celebrating his birth tonight he teaches us who the shiah
[28:03]are the imam states are those who have patience and forbearance they're
[28:11]like a mountain you cannot bring them down hurricanes can come and
[28:18]cause destruction to massive cities and states but when a hurricane passes
[28:22]through a mountain it can't do anything to a mountain in fact
[28:25]mountains mountain ranges they weaken the hurricane systems a mountain you cannot
[28:31]do anything with a mountain they are mountains of patience they have
[28:40]true knowledge about allah and the religion of allah they live by
[28:53]the love of their lord then the imam alayhi salaam states you
[28:59]find their life is based on humbleness it's based on ibadah [Music]
[29:06]their faces are yellow due to excessively worshipping allah their eyes are
[29:20]red because they cry out of their love for allah because of
[29:27]excessively remembering allah allah is on their tongue you see their lips
[29:32]withering have you seen someone when for hours and hours they're saying
[29:36]something doing something their lips actually start to wither this is symbolic
[29:46]they accept hunger for themselves out of humbleness when you look at
[29:54]their faces you're remembered you remember allah subhanahu wa their faces remind
[29:59]you of god they are the lanterns of every darkness the imam
[30:08]states these are my true shia and so on this night we
[30:14]ask allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to truly guide us to give us
[30:19]the tawfiq and the conviction to be amongst the true shia of
[30:24]amir al mu'min was
