[1:34][Music] i [Music] [Music] allah [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign um muhammad is

[3:51]foreign brothers and sisters one of the greatest gifts that allah has

[4:19]blessed us with is the gift of free will and the gift

[4:30]of expressing our mind expressing our thoughts the gift of speech to

[4:38]be able to communicate this is a gift from allah subhanahu wa

[4:43]ta'ala upon us the ability to voice our opinion to speak out

[4:48]what's in your mind you're able to speak it out and in

[4:55]fact the ability to protest you know a baby as soon as

[5:00]the baby is born what do they begin doing they're protesting they're

[5:05]crying this is a god-given gift that allah has given all of

[5:09]us is the all merciful allah he taught the quran he created

[5:30]the human being and the first gift he gave him he gave

[5:35]you the ability to speak the ability to articulate and this gift

[5:42]of speech it's a great power it's a great power and it

[5:47]is through the speech that a person is able to win paradise

[5:53]and it is through speech and through what you say a person

[5:58]could lose this dunya and lose paradise and be placed into the

[6:06]hell fire allah who make it into heaven they go to heaven

[6:12]why allah says because of the words that they uttered allah places

[6:20]them in heaven just because of the words they uttered they entered

[6:28]heaven and also some people they could be punished because of the

[6:33]words that they utter because of things that they say they could

[6:37]be held accountable allah says in the quran [Applause] and they are

[7:02]cursed for what they said about allah now what is the statement

[7:10]that differentiates between a muslim and a non-muslim it's two sentences it's

[7:16]two sentences that you utter but that will differentiate between heaven and

[7:22]hell hell fire for you the shahada saying the person who says

[7:30]it becomes a muslim and therefore this person has the rights of

[7:33]a muslim and the person who does not say it this person

[7:37]is not considered to be a muslim now it is very important

[7:45]for us to be very careful of the words that we utter

[7:49]although the words and speech is a gift from allah to us

[7:55]it is also a responsibility sometimes through one word sometimes through one

[8:01]sentence that could break a marriage it could either make the marriage

[8:04]or it could break the marriage sometimes a relationship between a husband

[8:09]and wife becomes sour why because of one bad word because of

[8:13]someone does not know how to say something kindly so we are

[8:19]responsible for the words allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will hold us accountable

[8:23]we are responsible for what you say you could say a word

[8:28]you testify for someone in court and you protect this person's dignity

[8:31]and honor and life and you could also testify against the person

[8:36]so the words that we utter are very important and this is

[8:39]why allah says in the quran a part of being a believer

[8:43]you have to be very careful on the words that you utter

[8:46]you have to be very careful in what you say we made

[8:53]a covenant with the israelites what is it you do not worship

[9:00]anyone other than god and you show love and attachment to your

[9:19]and when you talk to people what do you say talk to

[9:24]people with kindly talk to people gently [Music] prayer and zakat so

[9:33]my dear brothers and sisters the gift the ability to speak is

[9:39]a gift from allah but also comes with responsibilities we have to

[9:42]be very careful how we talk we have to be very careful

[9:45]what we say when we say it imam are gathering in the

[9:51]month of muharram to commemorate the martyrdom of imam hussain imam hussain

[9:55]it was because of a word he uttered that yazid was not

[9:59]happy because imam was saying he said i cannot give allegiance to

[10:01]a man like yazid and he tells the people on his way

[10:06]to karbala many times he calls on people he says i heard

[10:15]from my grandfather he says if any one of you sees a

[10:47]tyrant sees a ruler a sultan that is used in the name

[10:49]of god in the name of rasulallah breaking the boundaries of god

[10:55]and oppressing people and this person does not say or do anything

[10:58]you either have to act or own or the words that you

[11:04]utter if someone does not do neither of those then you will

[11:08]be placed with that person with that tyrant allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[11:12]will resurrect you so then imam hussain he says and these people

[11:17]these people referring to yazid he says this is exactly what they're

[11:22]doing they're oppressing so this is why imam hussain spoke and here

[11:26]we are taught that we have to speak against the injustice and

[11:31]this is where the concept of um comes one of the most

[11:37]important obligations we have as muslims in addition to your salah your

[11:41]zakat your hajj but when it comes to these two obligations they

[12:00]have shortcomings with it what is this obligation meaning if i see

[12:06]someone not doing something correctly i have a duty i have a

[12:08]religious duty to enjoin the good through my words if i see

[12:15]someone doing something i see someone doing something forbidden i have a

[12:20]religious obligation to say something and then of course here when it

[12:25]comes to um the hadith he says when you're enjoying the good

[12:32]you're pleasing god and this will not take from your wisp your

[12:37]your money your sustenance it's not going to become less your life

[12:42]is not going to become shorter a lot of people they say

[12:44]oh i can't speak the truth because i might get kicked out

[12:47]of my job because i might lose my money i might lose

[12:49]my income i might lose my life the time of death closer

[13:08]that's the time that god has written for you it's not going

[13:12]to make your risk your sustenance and the best form of jihad

[13:22]the best form of struggle is to say a word in front

[13:27]of hey tyrants so words my dear brothers and sisters carry a

[13:29]lot of meaning words can destroy a family and words can build

[13:32]a family words can destroy a society a community a small community

[13:40]could be destroyed by the words that people utter so this is

[13:44]why sometimes it's good to be quiet you know always just because

[13:49]we are gifted with the ability to speak it doesn't mean that

[13:53]we should always speak sometimes silence is the best form of speech

[13:56]sometimes you could send a message to someone through silence you don't

[14:01]always need to speak and hear in a hadith he says he

[14:11]says at times it's best to control your tongue i'm sick hold

[14:24]this is a charity but you're not giving the charity to the

[14:27]poor who are you giving the charity to yourself you're doing a

[14:34]favor to yourself sometimes by being quiet by not always saying what's

[14:37]on your mind and the person will not be able to reach

[14:48]the true highest form of iman until they learn how to control

[14:55]their tongue so controlling the tongue is very important now my dear

[14:59]brothers and sisters we live in a time where there are misconceptions

[15:06]about islam and free speech today some people they come and they

[15:09]say look at this look at this religion islam does not tolerate

[15:12]free speech someone says something against the quran someone says something against

[15:17]the prophet talks about the religion right away you have these muslims

[15:21]they go and they attack people and this is they try to

[15:28]some try to draw the image that islam and free speech cannot

[15:31]coexist islam and democracy cannot coexist you cannot live and talk and

[15:36]live in a society and coexist with others however my dear brothers

[15:42]and sisters this is not true that's not true we should not

[15:46]believe everything that we see in fox news or cnn or these

[15:48]channels these pundits they come and they say things that doesn't mean

[15:51]they are speaking on behalf of islam sometimes they come and they

[15:57]take one image that is misrepresentative of islam it's a twisted mentality

[16:02]and they come and they try to portray that as islam if

[16:06]you want islam go and look at the life of rasulallah go

[16:09]and look at the life of the true representatives of islam let's

[16:17]just let's read the life of the prophet when we read the

[16:21]life of the prophets then you could ask yourself does islam tolerate

[16:25]speech or does it not tolerate speech a man he comes to

[16:30]rasulullah one day the prophet was dividing the wealth either after a

[16:34]battle or something has happened the prophet was dividing the wealth amongst

[16:38]the muslims so he's giving this person some this much this person

[16:44]this much amen amen comes to us o leader rasulallah is a

[17:06]prophet of god he is a military leader he is the head

[17:11]of state he comes and he tells him be just o muhammad

[17:15]be just o muhammad he says will be upon you who's going

[17:49]to be just if i am not just if i am not

[17:49]going to distribute the wealth justly then who are you going to

[17:55]find justice from this is now can someone go to a king

[18:02]can someone go to someone and insult them in such a way

[18:04]of course not but was tolerant in another hadith imam he became

[18:15]the head of state and he's in the masjid he's leading the

[18:21]prayer imam ali was the ruler of what is equivalent to 50

[18:24]countries today 50 of the muslim countries today he was in the

[18:31]morning prayer so there was a man one of them one of

[18:34]the hypocrites he was he was praying by the name of ibn

[18:40]this man is reciting the quran he's praying and he comes and

[18:47]he recites a verse from the quran now we have once up

[18:51]when the quran is being recited allah says when the quran is

[18:56]being recited listen to it this man keeps interrupting him by reciting

[18:59]a verse from the quran accusing imam ali of doing of of

[19:07]basically blasphemy of letting go of his religion the man while he's

[19:11]praying he recites this verse and we have revealed to you allah

[19:24]says in the quran and we have revealed to you and to

[19:26]those before you that if you do shirk then all of your

[19:30]good deeds all of your deeds are going to be erased now

[19:33]imam is reciting the quran this man recites this verse so imam

[19:38]ali stays quiet out of respect for the quran and then he

[19:40]wants to recite again the man continues he recites again goes quiet

[19:45]out of respect for the quran until he he wants to read

[19:53]and this man he keeps interrupting him he replied with this verse

[20:03]and the promise of god is real and do not be belittled

[20:08]by those who do not have yakin do not have certainty and

[20:12]then he continued the salah now can someone can someone interrupt the

[20:18]president in their speech can someone interrupt the emperor in their speech

[20:22]now of course not if you look at the life of rasulallah

[20:25]you look at the debates you see that they were tolerant during

[20:30]the life of imam sadiq there were atheists they were atheists they

[20:39]were atheists that were living there we have narrations of the imam

[20:42]refueling them the imam is tolerant they are invaded teach us to

[20:48]be tolerant now of course this discussion has a continuation we will

[22:48]brothers and sisters we're talking about the gift of speech allah has

[22:52]gifted us with the ability to speak one of the greatest gift

[22:57]from allah and this is a gift that we will be held

[23:02]accountable for you say something good allah will reward you and you

[23:08]say something bad people are cursed for what they say and we

[23:15]said islam does tolerate free speech you can express yourself allah gave

[23:20]you that ability to express yourself allah gave you the ability to

[23:23]protest however does speak free speech have limits or does it not

[23:33]have limits now put islam aside in america are there limits to

[23:38]free speech or are there no limits to free speech in europe

[23:40]are there limits to free speech or are there no limits to

[23:45]free speech the answer is yes if the speech that is being

[23:50]said is toxic is causing danger is causing harm to a community

[23:57]causing harm to a society societies do not tolerate it in america

[24:00]hate speech is not tolerated there are certain things that if someone

[24:04]says right away you'll get arrested there are certain things that if

[24:10]someone does you can't come and do whatever you want in the

[24:13]name of i have the right to express myself now yes there

[24:18]is a limit to expression to free speech but societies do not

[24:22]tolerate hate speech societies do not tolerate toxic speech because whatever we

[24:28]say has consequences it's not only what we do has consequences sometimes

[24:32]it's what we say as consequences and this is why in we

[24:37]have the first amendment in the united states the right of expression

[24:41]however this is restricted you can't for example do fraud under the

[24:47]express under the excuse of free speech uh child pornography speech that

[24:52]is integral to illegal contact conduct speech that incites imminent lawlessness at

[24:59]action speech that violates intellectual property true threats commercial there's a there's

[25:06]several several ways that free speech is limited according to the constitution

[25:11]according to american law and we see for example in europe now

[25:17]the irony here is that people are given the impression that in

[25:23]the non-muslim countries in the west in europe in america people have

[25:28]free speech and it's the muslims that take away the rights of

[25:31]speech it's the muslims that do not tolerate freedom of expression and

[25:33]freedom of speech right now you go to 16 european countries and

[25:41]israel there are laws where if someone goes out in public and

[25:45]questions the holocaust someone comes and says did the holocaust now this

[25:48]is not me encouraging this this is just i'm just pointing out

[25:55]this law if you go out and 16 european countries and israel

[25:58]if you come and you question the holocaust you're going to be

[26:03]fined is this free speech this is not free speech right now

[26:08]on social media just a few days ago someone made a post

[26:10]on instagram or on facebook or on twitter talking about palestinian children

[26:16]the post is just talking about palestinian children comparing palestinian children with

[26:22]children that are living in america children that are living here comfortable

[26:26]and they have the right to do whatever they want that post

[26:30]it was silenced it was muted by instagram the post went viral

[26:36]and then they came and they they silenced it they muted it

[26:38]they took out the sound is this is this freedom of speech

[26:44]is this freedom of expression of course not now why do they

[26:47]do this because they tell you there are certain things that are

[26:49]sacred to us and we do not tolerate we do not allow

[26:53]anyone coming and questioning and and talking about something that is sacred

[26:59]to us we muslims we also say there are certain things that

[27:02]are sacred to us the quran is sacred to us the rasool

[27:06]allah the holy prophet is sacred to us why is it that

[27:11]you have the right to express yourself to you that free speech

[27:18]is limited in the west in europe in america when it comes

[27:20]to so many other things but when it comes to islam if

[27:24]someone is accusing islam or attacking islam or attacking rasulullah then suddenly

[27:29]this person becomes an advocate of free speech see here there are

[27:34]double standards double standards if someone is going out publicly attacking islam

[27:39]and insulting 1.6 billion muslims in the world this person becomes a

[27:43]proponent of free speech we have to celebrate this person's life but

[27:46]if you come and you post uh on instagram something about palestinian

[27:50]children you get silenced and you get cancelled is this justice is

[27:54]this free speech no it's not so here you see that there

[27:58]are double standards france one example of double standards always comes to

[28:06]mind as friends because france they come and they say we're secular

[28:08]we give people the right to express themselves the charlie hebdo magazine

[28:12]which was every day bringing out a cartoon attacking the prophets and

[28:16]attacking muslims in france a lady goes out and she wears a

[28:21]hijab in school they come and they tell her you can't go

[28:25]to the school is this a freedom of expression or a lady

[28:29]is going swimming and she wears what they call a bikini a

[28:32]hijab that she's able to go and swim with and they come

[28:36]and they find her and they do not allow it is this

[28:40]freedom of expression is this freedom of speech so when they come

[28:43]and they accuse islam of being a religion that is backward or

[28:46]religion that does not allow this is all double standards every society

[28:52]has things that are sacred and we say do not insult what

[28:54]is sacred to people do not even as we muslims we should

[29:00]not attack and insult something that is sacred to other people and

[29:04]similarly we do not want that to happen to us now my

[29:08]dear brothers and sisters one message to the muslims we as muslims

[29:12]right now a lot of muslims they come and they say oh

[29:16]look this hate that's going on against islam hate against the prophet

[29:20]hate against the quran we have a duty as well there are

[29:26]many ways that we can remove these challenges that we could remove

[29:28]this uh these attacks against the prophets and protect the honor of

[29:35]rasool allah one of the most important ways is that we need

[29:38]to go back to our books you know this man said he

[29:42]wrote the book he wrote the book satanic verses where did he

[29:46]get this idea from a lot of muslims don't know this where

[29:50]did he get this idea from did he make up this idea

[29:53]did he invent this idea this concept no this concept was found

[29:57]in the books of muslims and this is the problem this is

[30:02]the problem you have books of muslims and muslims blindly accept any

[30:06]hadith that's out there this person said this they blindly accept it

[30:10]there are hadith that are called hadith now of course the majority

[30:16]of the sunni muslims also reject this right now but there are

[30:19]some that accept this that they say that while the prophet was

[30:22]reciting the quran and he's talking about the idols the quran it's

[30:28]talking about the idols of the muslim and then they say suddenly

[30:37]shaytaan came and interjected in the middle of the revelation meaning the

[30:42]prophet is reciting the quran suddenly shaytan comes in the middle and

[30:45]then the prophet started saying talking about the talking about the idols

[30:54]he started praising them these these high flying and we we hope

[31:02]further we hope for their intercession and they say that this made

[31:04]the mushroom king happy can we accept this of course we can't

[31:09]accept this but the problem is not when a non-muslim comes and

[31:12]attacks us the problem is we have these hadith in the books

[31:16]of the muslims and this is why we muslims we must educate

[31:18]ourselves and we need to filter what's in the books of the

[31:22]muslims this is one and the prophet he tells the muslims he

[31:24]tells them they're going to be many people they're going to fabricate

[31:31]narrations and they're going to attribute it to also allah this is

[31:35]why we need to be very careful we need to filter what

[31:40]hadith we hear because the quran we know the quran but we

[31:44]have to filter them another very important point is that we should

[31:49]not give people an excuse to talk about islam and muslims by

[31:53]becoming successful become the best in what you do that way no

[31:56]one will be able to criticize islam my
