[11:50]this truly is a topic that affects all of our lives and

[11:57]it's a topic that's directly related to our past talks today what

[12:01]I'd like to do is I'd like to really understand what does

[12:05]it mean to have freedom of expression I'd like to address this

[12:09]topic logically I'd like to address it with respect to how its

[12:13]addressed socially in our daily lives and finally what Islam expects of

[12:19]us and how is it that we can you know practically apply

[12:22]these teachings that the Quran teaches us in that elevate teach us

[12:27]our goal of course in this holy month is that this month

[12:32]becomes a practical month of change a month in which we can

[12:35]take everything that the prophet sallallaahu evaluate sallam told us in his

[12:40]introduction to the month of Ramadan and welcoming the holy month of

[12:43]Ramadan so that we can understand how it is that we can

[12:48]decode our lives how can we take control of ourselves how can

[12:54]we control every single element whether physical or metaphysical now we spent

[12:58]the last few nights understanding the metaphysic ality of a human being

[13:02]how is it that I can control all of all of the

[13:08]components that make me who I am right and how is it

[13:13]that I can then take that and express it positively in a

[13:16]manner that is becoming of the human being that I am in

[13:22]a manner that is becoming of Who I am remember we proved

[13:26]that our worth comes from Allah Almighty right so to say in

[13:32]a manner that is becoming of Hawaiian is something that I should

[13:37]really contemplate over because do all my acts does everything that I

[13:42]say is it really becoming of my worth today we might get

[13:46]a little deep I warn you you know when I say that

[13:54]it reminds me of a time when I was in a car

[14:00]accident a long time ago years ago and I remember after the

[14:05]car accident I was sitting on the side of the road and

[14:07]I had flashbacks of my life and I remember when I had

[14:13]those flashbacks all I could think about is what is it that

[14:15]I've done what is it that I've said who is it that

[14:19]I've hurt why is it that I said everything that I said

[14:20]why is it that I didn't do enough and I thought to

[14:26]myself and I was a very quiet individual at that time I'd

[14:30]have never thought that I would be in front of you know

[14:33]large numbers of people speaking I mean there was no way I

[14:36]would have believed anybody who would have told me that I would

[14:40]have such a role but I made my I made myself a

[14:45]promise that day I said that there will be nothing that is

[14:47]within me that is good that I will not express to those

[14:53]whom I love and you know and I contemplate over that I

[14:56]remember when I was in that situation and all those flashbacks incidentally

[15:01]they were all in black and white I don't know why but

[15:04]all those flashbacks how I treated my mother what I said to

[15:10]her why you know maybe the words that I said hurts her

[15:12]at one point or they hurt my dad at one point and

[15:15]what if and this is the big what if I remember I

[15:20]remember once we were taken out of that area and we were

[15:22]taken to a kind of a rest stop and this was an

[15:28]Iran that this happened an arrest stopped and I finished washing my

[15:32]face and my face was all bloody and I sat down and

[15:36]I saw my family were in this caravan of family members and

[15:40]friends who were trying to escape Saddam Hussein when he invaded Kuwait

[15:45]we were living in Kuwait at the time there was this huge

[15:49]adventure we were about 15 cars and trucks and a lot of

[15:54]us had forged paperwork and we're trying to cross the border to

[16:00]escape Saddam my father who was a surgeon still is was announced

[16:05]as the by Saddam he brought down a command that he should

[16:11]take over all of the hospitals of Kuwait and my father had

[16:13]rejected that so he said there's no way other than to escape

[16:17]out of Kuwait and we had to forge our paperwork go through

[16:21]Basava which is on the border of Iraq and Kuwait and then

[16:25]go across shuttle auto and cross into Iran so that we can

[16:29]escape persecution because once my father rejected that that means he would

[16:33]be hung murder or killed and anybody who knows Saddam's regime knows

[16:38]that if one person is killed then they're more likely to take

[16:41]more and kill the rest of the family especially the man so

[16:45]this was an interesting and interesting journey for us and I remember

[16:52]when this incident happened you know and we were in Iran sir

[16:55]and we were out of danger and I thought to myself I

[16:59]thought there isn't you know I was a quiet guy I thought

[17:01]and I know I knew it was good to be quiet but

[17:05]I realized one thing that sometimes you have to express yourself you

[17:09]have to tell the people that you love that you love them

[17:13]you have to speak the truth I realized as time went by

[17:20]that I slowly started to forget that promise to myself at the

[17:24]beginning it was nice and fresh right at the beginning I thought

[17:31]to myself you know mom I love you I might not have

[17:33]said it enough dad I love you might not have said it

[17:35]enough so I kept on doing it and doing it over and

[17:38]over but as time went by I realized I did it less

[17:40]and less and I couldn't understand why that was today I understand

[17:48]that why that was because I took life for granted again because

[17:51]I forgot the calamity that I went through right and slowly but

[17:54]surely as I you know started to become more expressive of myself

[18:02]I started to be a lot more socially active right and as

[18:05]I was socially active I realized that with the peer pressure that

[18:10]I had around me and the people around me who were expressing

[18:13]themselves in certain ways that I started slowly to start to express

[18:17]myself as they would express themselves but after a while I remember

[18:21]I had a similar situation where I was sitting down and I

[18:25]was thinking to myself as I was evaluating how things were going

[18:27]while I was in the car with a couple of friends that

[18:30]were sitting up front and they were chatting and and I was

[18:32]sitting in the back silently I started to contemplate so is this

[18:35]Who I am is this how I want to express my worth

[18:41]are these the right people to help me express Who I am

[18:44]and is this the way like right now if something wants to

[18:49]happen to me and I was to die in this car because

[18:51]they were driving really fast and I couldn't get them to stop

[18:55]they're gonna get them to slow down thought to myself if I

[19:01]die right now is this Who I am is this how I

[19:05]want myself to be express to others that when people for example

[19:08]speak about me one day they'll say oh yeah he died with

[19:12]a group of friends in a car and I won't be judged

[19:16]by who I am I'll be judged by who the majority are

[19:19]the majority I was with after that point after that night I

[19:27]wouldn't hang out with those friends yeah they called me they they

[19:32]told me you know why don't you come out why don't you

[19:34]hang out I never did I don't want to anymore that wasn't

[19:40]who I am wasn't who I was you see the thing about

[19:43]expressing yourself is a lot of us think that it's just verbal

[19:48]but it's not it's in where we are who we associate with

[19:51]and so it becomes very important for us to understand this idea

[20:02]of self-expression now logically speaking I know for a fact that as

[20:09]we proved previously that because I know that I'm limited and I

[20:12]know that I am in need of my Creator the Almighty and

[20:15]I know that I have to emulate him in his o'clock as

[20:17]I said first and foremost right because I proved that he's the

[20:23]unlimited creator and therefore he's the one that gives me my purpose

[20:25]because he's the one that chose for me to exist he's the

[20:29]one that gave me my worth so I think to myself well

[20:31]first and foremost if expressing myself is going to be a contradiction

[20:39]of my worth then I shouldn't express myself in a manner that

[20:43]contradicts my worth right you see expressing yourself isn't just with the

[20:53]tongue expressing yourself is with how you represent yourself what I wear

[20:59]who I hang out with right what I Drive when I Drive

[21:08]an expensive car I'm expressing myself right when I hang out with

[21:13]a group of friends I'm expressing who I am I know that

[21:19]logically speaking right because I know for example that when I would

[21:22]hang out with two of my friends all of the time here

[21:27]in Dearborn Goodman believing friends whenever I'd be by myself they'd say

[21:31]to me where are your brothers we weren't from the same family

[21:34]okay you know each one of us was from a different family

[21:38]one was Lebanese one was Iraqi one of them was from Iraqi

[21:40]from the south I'm originally from you know from the California and

[21:47]karbala so huge difference but because we hung out together all the

[21:52]time everybody thought that we were brothers and when I out of

[21:56]curiosity I asked one of our teachers who had a sheikh who

[21:59]was teaching us at the time was actually have taught somebody born

[23:40]a beautiful thing and one of the Hadees that we read I

[23:42]remember at the time I'll share with you at the end the

[23:47]Islamic view of brotherhood so logically speaking then I know that expressing

[23:54]myself is really an expression of what goes on in my intellect

[23:59]right what I believe because you see what goes on in my

[24:05]intellect what I have gained from information as reflected we said in

[24:09]my faculties right whatever I do whatever action I do whether it's

[24:13]which friends I choose to hang out with or whether it's what

[24:18]I say or whether it's what I wear is all an expression

[24:20]of my demon of my faith I don't need to explain that

[24:29]to you again right remember I said talking to your heart reminding

[24:33]it of the information that you learned positive self-talk connecting it to

[24:40]the information that your intellect has gained is going to help you

[24:44]become stronger in Iman right once that happens your dedication to that

[24:51]information like a little duckling following its mother duck right that dedication

[24:58]is what's going to allow you to reach the heights of transcendence

[25:03]that you want to reach the more you are dedicated the greater

[25:08]the heights you elite you reach the loftier you will become so

[25:14]now in this modern society living in the West with all the

[25:24]tweeting going on and you know although mar-a-lago and you know all

[25:32]the trump and trumpism x' and trump schisms and and all of

[25:38]the freedom of expression that is about in the United States and

[25:41]the West in general it's not about being mindful of others it's

[25:48]as much as it is about expressing your own opinion your own

[25:53]opinion if you notice you know I mean some people might be

[25:59]offended but this is what I think how many times have you

[26:00]read that or heard that or when people start a conversation this

[26:08]way don't take this the wrong way by the way that's the

[26:13]wrong way to start a conversation okay don't take this the wrong

[26:16]way but I think you should do this even if you haven't

[26:21]asked their opinion how many people show their ignorance through their writing

[26:36]through their messaging how many people countless countless ignorant quotes I shudder

[26:46]at the idea of someone even putting up a quote and they

[26:49]don't even know where it's from you know what they put anonymous

[26:52]and it's like it's some sort of wisdom rightfully like there's some

[26:57]sort of wisdom that this guy anonymous gave us but if he

[27:02]was so wise why don't we know about him this anonymous person

[27:06]and I thought anonymous was that dark web guy the hacker right

[27:16]with WikiLeaks and Christian Assange and all these guys we have this

[27:23]idea of freedom of expression that's become so confusing right we don't

[27:30]know what's truly freedom of expression anymore because I know conservatively speaking

[27:37]that I shouldn't offend anyone and socially speaking that I shouldn't hurt

[27:42]anyone but the message that's out there is you know what brother

[27:46]much debate doesn't care who you hurt important thing is you get

[27:51]it out there right an important thing is whatever is festering inside

[27:56]you should let people know today people on Facebook what do they

[28:00]do as soon as they're happy today I had a great day

[28:53]he forwards and I read this stuff and it's such a bunch

[28:57]of drivel right and the worst part is when they say you

[29:00]know they say the this scholar of Islam he said so and

[29:06]so right and then you're like no he did it he never

[29:09]said that or this merger he has this opinion right doesn't have

[29:12]this opinion I looked it up it's not there right but what

[29:17]do we do we're like oh it came from my friend Daisy

[38:15]can tell you stories how many girls that have been unfortunately exposed

[38:21]to things they should be exposed to because of a conversation on

[38:26]social media not just girls by the way even guys guys don't

[39:03]robbed robbed by gunpoint who's to say that that can't happen to

[39:19]right there are dangers many dangers okay so let's get back to

[39:23]the issue of self-expression so I know for a fact that today

[39:28]social expression can be very dangerous I know that it can be

[39:31]dangerous on different levels on a personal level as one on a

[39:32]social level is another on a political level that's a huge problem

[39:38]am i right I know right now in this current political climate

[39:46]and what's interesting is that today this day and age that when

[39:49]I look at some of the things that are being expressed on

[39:52]Twitter right left and center and I find those who are defending

[39:57]those young women who are out in the field who are trying

[39:59]to say a word of truth in the face of solve a

[40:06]ninja and the place in the face of a powerful dictator like

[40:11]president hopes that I slip and say presidents are from you know

[40:20]that we're finding that the word of truth is being villainized right

[40:25]the same people who are creating unfortunately the terrorism are the same

[40:33]people that are accusing those who are defending defending the innocent they're

[40:37]accusing them of being terrorists look at the freedom of expression it's

[40:42]skewed it's confusing right why for money right for power right just

[40:53]to say they're right just to say they're not wrong how hard

[40:59]is it for me to admit that I'm wrong why is it

[41:02]so hard for me to admit that I'm wrong a lot of

[41:05]people once they put something out there they get defensive even though

[41:08]they know they're wrong right say the man that they know they're
