[0:00][Music] I have the pleasure of sharing this series with you all

[0:31]called character and competence based on The Life and Legacy of IM

[0:33]aliam when we examine the life of IM Ali Alam we look

[0:39]at this individual as not only the cousin son-in-law the first IM

[0:43]the successor of prophet Muhammad s alai Al we're seeing an individual

[0:47]who manifested what it meant to be the complete human being in

[0:50]business we often refer to um the need for character both character

[0:57]and competence when it comes to having like the ideal team members

[1:01]building teams and recruiting for our companies our businesses our organizations so

[1:07]when I was looking at what to focus on when it came

[1:10]to the holy month of Ramadan and our personal journey of our

[1:15]our ethics how do we um focus on our personal development and

[1:22]grow as individuals I was looking at this theme of character and

[1:26]competence and I couldn't help but want to focus on The Life

[1:29]and Legacy of aliam so I'm bringing this all together to share

[1:36]some inspiration share some insights into the im's Life and Legacy as

[1:39]it relates to character and competence and how you and I can

[1:43]grow our character and competence we'll start from the very beginning with

[1:47]IM Ali's birth IM aliam was born in the Holy Kaa The

[1:55]only individual to have had this honor Alam his mother Lady Fatima

[2:03]B Assad was near the Caba and when the pangs of childbirth

[2:07]uh were upon her she prayed to Allah subhana tala to help

[2:13]her to relieve her the Angels uh came to her Aid Allah

[2:18]answered her prayers the ca miraculously opened up for her she entered

[2:26]it closed up after her and she was in the Caba for

[2:27]3 days after the 3-day period She came out with her son

[2:34]IM aliam on the 13th of rajab IM Ali Alam was born

[2:40]to Lady fa Assad and Abu Talib who his original name wasid

[2:44]man this was the son of Abdul the grandfather of Muhammad and

[2:53]he was known as the custodian of the Caba the chief of

[3:00]Banu hasham the tribe of hasham um and he was known for

[3:02]his piety his uh Royal like features he was tall handsome and

[3:07]everyone respected him Abu Talib took many of the features of his

[3:11]father and he was essentially his successor in being the custodian of

[3:14]the Caba the protector of the Caba when we look at the

[3:17]individuals the personalities of Abu Talib and uh Abdul mutb we go

[3:24]back to the story of in the Holy Quran there's a chapter

[3:27]called the elephant and this is a short story talking to the

[3:33]historical event when the army of abraha had uh gone to attack

[3:39]the Kaaba and when they were going to attack the Kaaba uh

[3:41]all the people of Mecca the meccans had uh fled for the

[3:46]hills but there was one man that remained one man and that

[3:49]man was ABD mutb man of Faith a man of Honor a

[3:52]man of Valor and when he uh stayed in front of the

[3:57]Kaaba and the army of abraha um having you know thousands of

[4:00]solders thousands of C Cavalry and these tank-like elephants he stood before

[4:09]them unfaced they told him what do you think you're going to

[4:12]do we're a whole Army here he said this house has a

[4:18]Lord that will protect it so he was standing in front of

[4:21]the house standing in front of the CA and the they were

[4:25]looking at him like what are you going to do you can't

[4:29]do anything look at us look at you he said this house

[4:30]has a Lord that will protect it and he whispered a prayer

[4:36]to Allah tala saying yaah Allah this is your house these are

[4:40]your people protect us and then there is the miraculous feet of

[4:44]the uh birds that had dropped uh small like pebbles or small

[4:52]Pebbles onto these tank-like elephants and basically destroyed the entire Army of

[4:58]abraha now why did this even happen to be begin with when

[5:01]we're looking at the story of abraha uh abraha had built a

[5:07]cathedral in what is today Yemen and it they wanted this to

[5:10]be basically the biggest pilgrimage site uh in in the world and

[5:14]um the Caba was essentially a competing uh pilgrimage site for them

[5:21]and the Arabs were not going to basically leave the CA and

[5:25]go down to this cathedral in Yemen so long as the Caba

[5:28]stood so he wanted to destroy the Caba so that he basically

[5:31]could monopolize the market of of pilgrimage now when I'm looking at

[5:36]the story and and we're examining and reflecting on this history and

[5:42]we're thinking about Imam Ali's ancestors his father and his grandfather we

[5:46]see already from Abdul mutalib in his conviction his faith his character

[5:52]and his competence that this was a man who had been tasked

[5:56]from generation to generation with the responsibility of protecting the Caba and

[6:01]he did so with you know unrelenting Faith Allah answered his prayers

[6:06]saved the Kaa and then Abdul MB would pass down this uh

[6:10]honor and this role to Abu Talib who also Faithfully did the

[6:16]same and we see this in his role Prophet Muhammad sahu alai

[6:20]who Abu Talib was essentially his protector so he protected the Kaa

[6:28]he protected the prophet and so long as he was alive it

[6:30]was known that nobody would cross Muhammad s because of Abu Talib

[6:36]because of his character because of his honor his nobility and this

[6:39]was something that when we're looking at the history of the imams

[6:43]especially IM aliam you're seeing this is the lineage that he came

[6:48]from this character was passed down from generation to generation and this

[6:50]essential training and being raised in this um lifestyle was passed down

[7:01]from abdb abali down onto IMI last thing I'll leave you with

[7:08]just in the short part is when we go back to the

[7:09]Caba and the miraculous birth of the IM in the Caba it

[7:15]is narrated that IM aliam the first person that he looked at

[7:19]first person that he opened his eyes to was none other than

[7:24]his brother cousin the prophet Muhammad and when we read the history

[7:29]and we look at at the narrations and we see this exchange

[7:33]between prophet Muhammad and who the prophet was at that time 30

[7:38]years old being the youngest of his siblings from his father Abu

[7:45]Talib um we see this instant Brotherhood this instant connection that the

[7:52]prophet essentially had fallen in love with his his cousin and had

[7:57]held him smile uham the baby boy opens his eyes the first

[8:02]thing to the holy prophet and essentially it's love at first sight

[8:07]and it's just a beautiful story to remember and share that the

[8:12]imam's uh very start was this connection not just from his lineage

[8:16]of his father his grandfather but onto his uh cousin his brother

[8:24]who he would become his the successor of the Prophet Muhammad
