[0:18]the name of the almighty God be compassionate the merciful the one

[0:24]who has created everything an utmost perfection and made a peace and

[0:28]blessings of the Almighty God be upon his pure and beloved messenger

[0:36]the best of his creation the symbol of humanity the holy prophet

[0:45]muhammad sallallahu aleyhi wa ali and his immaculate progeny of the island

[0:52]bathed peace be upon them especially the leader of our time the

[0:55]awaited savior and imam al-mahdi adjure allahu ta'ala firaga may God hasten

[1:04]his reappearance and make us all amongst us sincere and dedicated servants

[1:09]the Almighty God states in the holy quran smell ar-rahman ar-rahim ya

[1:17]ayyuha alladhina amanu and for second walaikum naruto hinata and hay Jarrah

[1:28]oh you who believe protect yourselves and your families from a fire

[1:36]whose fuel is people and rocks so that allahu la la ola

[1:41]beam illuminates your hearts and minds with a very loud silhouette historically

[1:54]most societies have been patriarchal men would usually work outside the house

[2:03]they were the breadwinners of the family they would make the income

[2:09]and bring that income to their homes the role of women was

[2:15]much more limited in terms of work and making an income woman

[2:20]mainly did domestic chores domestic work spending time with the children at

[2:26]home raising the children and possibly sometimes even working on the fields

[2:34]in agricultural societies but their role was very limited many types of

[2:40]work were not optional for them they did not have the luxury

[2:45]the option to work whatever they wanted their role was limited to

[2:53]what they would do in their homes domestic chores however we find

[2:58]that in the last few centuries especially in the last century many

[3:04]societies have changed and more and more women have joined the workforce

[3:10]more and more women are earning their own income they are less

[3:16]dependent on men many of them even have achieved their full economic

[3:21]independence from men in fact many families today are dependent on the

[3:29]income that women and mothers bring to the family today especially in

[3:36]the West if you want to live a comfortable middle-class life if

[3:41]you want to have that extra income so you can live comfortably

[3:45]then usually most families would need the income of the woman -

[3:52]she has to work full-time to provide that extra income so they

[3:58]can live comfortably now this has presented a big challenge for many

[4:01]please on the one hand woman find themselves pressure to work just

[4:08]like men they have to work eight hours a day sometimes ten

[4:10]hours a day so that they could live comfortably their family needs

[4:15]that income but at the same time they realized that as mothers

[4:21]they have a big obligation in their homes to spend time with

[4:26]their children you know mothers are those elements who glue the family

[4:35]together the greatest bond in the family comes from a mother no

[4:40]one can glue the family together like a mother can so women

[4:47]are feeling this pressure on the one hand they have many responsibilities

[4:49]at home with their family with their children with aging parents no

[4:54]one can care for aging parents like women do right you've seen

[4:59]aging parents they really need their daughters the love and compassion and

[5:05]meticulous care they can give them usually sons cannot give that level

[5:16]of care they have a great capacity to offer care to those

[5:20]around them so they feel this big challenge this big pressure on

[5:24]the one side they need to work on the other side they

[5:29]have all these family commitments towards their children towards their spouse towards

[5:38]their parents so how can they maintain a proper balance between work

[5:44]and between their life at home this is a dilemma that many

[5:49]families especially those religious families who do not want to neglect their

[5:54]motherly roles because Islam has placed a big emphasis on the role

[5:59]of a mother this is a dilemma that they're constantly facing how

[6:04]do they address this challenge in addressing this challenge my dear brothers

[6:10]and sisters we will examine four very important points concerning this issue

[6:15]the first point what is the position of the religion of Islam

[6:21]when it comes to women working does a slab permit women to

[6:25]work or no number two is it healthy for women to work

[6:33]full-time like men do or there are negative consequences number three we

[6:39]need that extra income so if a woman wants to spend more

[6:43]time at home and less time outside the house earning an income

[6:50]that means that they're going to earn less money is there a

[6:54]way to compensate for this financial loss if a wife works less

[6:57]outside the house and finally number four for those families who simply

[7:06]don't have enough time to spend in their homes what can they

[7:10]do how can we understand quality time with our children for those

[7:15]who don't have enough time to spend with their children let's begin

[7:20]with the first point what is the position of the religion of

[7:23]Islam when it comes to women working we all know that Islam

[7:30]has imposed the obligation of financial responsibilities on demand the husband according

[7:34]to Islamic law a father who has children to support a husband

[7:40]who has a wife to support is obligated by Islamic law to

[7:44]work that is an obligation the religion of Islam does not impose

[7:49]a similar obligation on women but are they allowed to work or

[7:57]just because Islam did not obligate them we conclude that Islam does

[8:01]not want them to work the religion of Islam does not ban

[8:04]women from working contrary to what many people think around the world

[8:12]right now if you ask an average person here in the West

[8:14]in the States and Canada can a woman work or not in

[8:19]the religion of Islam is she allowed to work or not you

[8:21]will get very surprising responses you know recently when Saudi Arabia lifted

[8:28]ban on women driving it revealed a lot about how people actually

[8:36]think about the religion of a stuff millions of people non-muslims even

[8:40]some Muslims around the world really believed that the Quran bans women

[8:45]from driving I myself have had discussions with Canadians and Americans who

[8:50]have told me specifically that they were under the impression that the

[8:55]Quran which by the way was revealed 14th centuries ago when he

[8:58]had no cars bans women from driving this is how deeply rooted

[9:07]this misconception is similarly when it comes to working many are under

[9:12]the impression that Islam bans women from working so what is the

[9:15]position of the religion of Islam we know it doesn't obligate them

[9:17]obviously but are they allowed to work if they want to his

[9:24]lab permits woman to work if certain guidelines are observed if Islamic

[9:30]guidelines of modesty and chastity are observed then the religion of Islam

[9:35]has no problem with women working they're free to work it's optional

[9:38]for them if they would like to work and help out with

[9:43]the finances of their house they are most welcome to do so

[9:45]but they just have to be more careful because women in our

[9:52]society are more targeted when it comes to certain types of harassment

[9:57]than men you see there's a hadith and some people take this

[10:03]hadith out of context there is a beautiful narration from the Holy

[10:07]Prophet sallallahu aleyhi are in which he talks about the signs of

[10:10]the end of times before the reappearance of our imam hajj allahu

[10:13]ta'ala for Raja Salman has a conversation with the Prophet the Prophet

[10:20]is talking to his companions specifically to Salman said man here's the

[10:25]Prophet listing the signs of the end of times the Prophet mentions

[10:33]many interesting details in this hadith so for instance the Prophet says

[10:38]that towards the end of times people will be dutiful and good

[10:41]with their friends but they will be neglectful to their parents look

[10:48]at Western society today friends are the most important people in your

[10:53]life just look at teenagers those in their 20s college students the

[10:57]time that they spend with their friends is a lot more than

[11:00]the time they spend with their parents in fact I've seen so

[11:05]many of our youth they're so sensitive when it comes to their

[11:09]friends they always want to keep their friends happy the last thing

[11:13]they want to do is upset their friends right but when it

[11:17]comes to their parents honestly they don't care if their father is

[11:20]upset with them disappointed if their mother is disappointed they couldn't care

[11:24]less it's not important what their parents think but what their friends

[11:29]think is really important isn't it so in our society today many

[11:33]of our youth they really care about how their friends view them

[11:41]how they see them how they treat them but when it comes

[11:44]to their parents you don't see that much concern they're not as

[11:47]concerned with how their parents view them so the Prophet mentions this

[11:54]in this hadith then the Prophet says one of the signs of

[11:57]the end of times what to sharra kumara A to Z refer

[12:02]to John and a woman a wife will join her husband in

[12:05]working she will join the work force now the Prophet doesn't say

[12:11]whether this is good or bad he's just saying this as a

[12:13]sign but if you look at the tone of the hadith the

[12:19]Prophet is telling us about the moral state of the end of

[12:25]times so we can consider what the Prophet says in a negative

[12:28]tone meaning that when women will join the work force there's going

[12:33]to be a negative consequence now many I have taken this hadith

[12:38]and said hey see the religion of Islam discourages women from working

[12:41]because it considers it one of the signs of the end of

[12:46]times it's looked down upon how do we understand a phrase like

[12:49]that coming from the prophet sallallaahu nau on it when we look

[12:54]at the position of the religion of Islam is is not saying

[12:57]women should not join the workforce it means they should be careful

[13:01]when they join the workforce so they don't abandon their motherly responsibilities

[13:07]if you can combine between being a responsible mother and a mother

[13:14]who works outside perfect but if you cannot don't choose working outside

[13:19]over your role of being your mother never do that because if

[13:26]you sacrifice your role of being your mother then you have lost

[13:29]the well-being of your family and this is what many people will

[13:34]do at the end of times they will sacrifice the well-being of

[13:37]their family at the expense of working outside this is what the

[13:41]prophet sallallahu alayhi wa RA is discouraging people to do don't abandon

[13:46]your motherly role keep that as a priority and if you can

[13:53]work do so no problem but don't abandon that role so this

[13:56]is how we can understand a hadith like this and back to

[14:02]our previous point the religion of Islam puts guidelines for women to

[14:07]work outside the house provided that their chastity and honor is preserved

[14:11]why do I say this brothers and sisters when we talk about

[14:17]these discussions some people think that you know some religious people or

[14:22]those who claim to understand Islam or backwards they don't understand what's

[14:27]going on in society today we have to look at the statistics

[14:30]in our society what's happening out there in the workplace we find

[14:37]according to statistics that married women who work in the workplace they

[14:42]are much more likely to fall into immorality and infidelity this is

[14:51]a fact this is not something that we can deny because today

[14:54]in many offices in the workplace the situation is as such a

[14:58]woman is constantly working with a male partner with a male co-worker

[15:06]and sometimes they get very intimate their work right spending hours and

[15:09]hours next to each other and talking and they develop very strong

[15:14]bonds due to the nature of their work well what is the

[15:16]consequence of that when you're exposed to a another man more than

[15:22]your husband and you were talking to him more than your husband

[15:24]and you're chatting to him more than your husband what's going to

[15:27]happen so the religion of Islam tells our sisters be careful you

[15:34]can go out there and work but you have to maintain your

[15:36]Islamic guidelines now does that mean that men are off the hook

[15:42]there's no guidelines for them of course not but women are more

[15:45]targeted than men when it comes to harassment when you look at

[15:48]victims of harassment especially in the workplace who's doing the harassing more

[15:53]men or women of course men most of the cases of harassment

[15:59]are coming from men meaning the women are target's right they are

[16:04]being targeted so a woman can pursue working but she just needs

[16:12]to be aware that she will be targeted let her develop an

[16:15]environment that is healthy for her that protects her chastity that protects

[16:19]her from many types of unwanted advances and many types of harassment

[16:26]so the religion of Islam does allow women to work provided that

[16:30]these guidelines are preserved now some of you will come back and

[16:33]say wait a minute but we hear our scholars in Moraga stating

[16:36]that the permission of the husband is required so is it required

[16:44]or not many scholars say first of all that if a woman

[16:47]working means that she still fulfills her marital obligations that's fine she

[16:54]doesn't necessarily need his permission yes if her working means that she

[16:58]will have shortcomings when it comes to her marital obligations then she

[17:03]needs of course the permission of her husband many scholars have said

[17:09]that yet there are scholars today some very well-known maraj today whose

[17:14]fatwa is even if the wife is fulfilling her marital obligations she

[17:18]still needs the perm of her husband when it comes to work

[17:24]so how do we address this concern one way to resolve this

[17:26]concern is at the time of marriage when you're doing the marriage

[17:30]contract right the cat's big table the new car the update you

[17:35]name it whenever you're doing that marriage contract a woman has the

[17:40]right to stipulate in the marriage contract that I want to work

[17:45]without requiring the permission of my husband and if they agree on

[17:49]this marriage contract that she no longer needs the permission of her

[17:52]husband so that's one solution for this from day one just to

[17:57]make it clear to her husband I wish to work and you

[17:59]cannot stop me from doing so if he accepts and they get

[18:03]married then that condition is binding he has no right to stop

[18:06]her from working now let's say no such contract was made and

[18:13]initially the husband consented to his wife working she found her work

[18:17]she found some work and she went there she started working and

[18:20]he gave his permission then later he changed his mind he told

[18:25]her you know what I don't want you to work anymore and

[18:28]he really doesn't have legitimate concerns he just there are some men

[18:31]they're really bullies right they just like to boss their wives around

[18:37]and they are irrational in a lot of their decisions so let's

[18:41]say he's being irrational and he had already given his consent many

[18:44]scholars have said if he's already given his consent and based on

[18:49]that she went and found work and started working he can no

[18:53]longer stop her he does not have the authority nor the right

[18:57]to stop her from working after giving his consent so if these

[19:03]Islamic guidelines are observed than the religion understand has no problem with

[19:10]women working in fact the greatest example we have in our history

[19:15]was that greatest woman in the early history of Islam lady Khadijah

[19:19]alehissalaam the first wife of the Holy Prophet sallallaahu Allah you are

[19:24]what was her profession before the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa married her

[19:29]lady sadita was the wealthiest business person in Arabia when the Arabs

[19:39]would gather their caravans to travel you know in the summer they

[19:42]would go to Syria to do trade in the winter they would

[19:48]go south to Yemen to do their trade let ashita I was

[19:52]safe they would gather all their caravans the caravan of lady sadita

[19:58]was larger than all of those caravans combined that's how much well

[20:04]she had her father was wealthy who Eilat she inherited their wealth

[20:09]from him but she was smart she developed that wealth she knew

[20:12]how to invest how did how to do trade and she became

[20:19]the wealthiest businessperson in Arabia and before each Caravan would go out

[20:23]because she would have people working for her to do business on

[20:26]her behalf she wouldn't necessarily have to travel she owned the business

[20:30]history tells us that before the caravan would leave Mecca every time

[20:35]she would go to Masjid al-haram by the Kaaba and she would

[20:44]path of prophet ibrahim she was not an idol worshipper like some

[20:51]ignorant people think she was a believer in the one God she

[20:54]would pray to the Lord of ibraheem alehissalaam and she would ask

[20:57]allah o allah give blessings to my to jaha give blessings to

[21:04]my business analyst panatela would bless her business she was a very

[21:10]charitable woman those who could not get married in Mecca she would

[21:13]fund their marriages she would sponsor them no poor person would knock

[21:17]at her door and he would be leaving empty-handed she was very

[21:24]charitable her relatives who were poor she would give them money the

[21:28]Prophet sallallahu aleyhi wanted chooses to marry a woman like Khadijah lisanna

[21:33]what does that tell you about the religion of Islam that Islam

[21:36]believes women should not work should not be protective absolutely not Islam

[21:41]believes that women should be progressive within appropriate guidelines and the best

[21:47]example is the wife of your messenger and prophet and she was

[21:56]his most beloved wife they say history tells us that once the

[22:00]prophets married lady Khadija is Sarah she already would give a lot

[22:05]of charity but the Prophet would encourage her more one year this

[22:09]is before the Prophet receives the message of Islam one year honey

[22:18]sallallahu alayhi wa la she comes due to a severe drought in

[22:22]her area she comes to Mecca because she used to live around

[22:25]the city of Mecca in the deserts in some villages she comes

[22:30]to Mecca and she asks for assistance the prophet sallallahu alayhi wa

[22:36]ali tells lady Khadija arias salaam give her money she was good

[22:43]to me honor her lady Jolly Saran gives her 40 sheep and

[22:47]camels that's how generous she was and she would always obey the

[22:51]holy prophet sallallahu alayhi wa it when he asked her to help

[25:18]Ta'ala to lady fatima is set up to honor the efforts of

[25:24]ladies a teacher is Sarah so we have lady Khadija as a

[25:30]prime example in the history of Islam of a woman who worked

[25:33]and she was the wife of a prophet of a prophet who

[25:39]does not do anything out of desire he does he does it

[25:44]based on wisdom so that is the position of the religion of

[25:46]Islam women can work within the appropriate guidelines and in fact they

[25:50]are encouraged to do especially if they would like to help out

[25:57]their families help out relatives they have other goals in society charitable

[26:03]causes Allah Allah will reward them for that so that is one

[26:06]very important point which is the position of the religion of Islam

[26:08]the second point my dear brothers and sisters women can work but

[26:15]are they encouraged to work full-time like men do or no let's

[26:19]say men on average work eight to ten hours a day many

[26:24]women these days especially those who are mothers you find them also

[26:28]working seven to eight hours to nine hours sometimes even 10 hours

[26:31]a day outside the house is this healthy for a woman to

[26:36]work that long outside the house or no again let's go to

[26:39]statistics what's happening in our Western society today is that a mother

[26:43]in addition to all of her responsibilities towards her children they care

[26:49]the emotional care that needs to give she needs to give to

[26:54]her children on top of that she is being burdened to work

[26:58]for eight hours a day full-time now that is taking a toll

[27:07]on the well-being of millions of women 53% of women in the

[27:12]United States who work are saying that the stress in the workplace

[27:16]is too much for them to handle this is a huge burden

[27:22]on them that is taking a toll on their psychological well-being on

[27:27]their emotional well-being they're really suffering middle-aged women who work are two

[27:35]to three times more likely to suffer from work-related stress anxiety and

[27:42]depression because what Western society has done is simply increase the workload

[27:47]of a woman and that's not fair it is not fair to

[27:53]add all those extra hours on a woman it doesn't mean be

[27:56]that she's weak she can't handle it no we're not saying that

[28:02]but it means that the workload is unfair equality does not mean

[28:06]that you increase the workload on someone and you stress them out

[28:10]millions of people in our society you go and do the research

[28:14]and find out for yourself millions of women in our society today

[28:17]are under severe stress and depression and anxiety because of all that

[28:25]stress that's coming from work remember at the end of the day

[28:28]she's the one who becoming pregnant not the man do you know

[28:31]how much a pregnancy takes a toll on the human body we

[28:36]forget that I don't understand sometimes these feminists they lose their humanity

[28:42]and their compassion to women to their own selves a woman who

[28:46]goes through multiple pregnancies that takes a toll on her body if

[28:50]she is nursing her child that takes a toll on the body

[28:55]no she has to go out there if he is working 10

[28:58]hours she has to work 10 hours just like you okay fine

[29:00]do that and then you'll suffer from all of these consequences these

[29:06]skyrocketing rates of depression anxiety psychological problems emotional stress that's unfair that's

[29:15]why the religion of Islam did not impose the obligation of working

[29:20]on women so for a mother who has that very sensitive role

[29:28]in her house she has children who need her emotional support for

[29:31]her to spend all that time this is unfair to her it's

[29:36]not even healthy for her psychological and emotional well-being we have to

[29:40]understand that this is a reality it's not that we're being backwards

[29:48]were being patriarchal we have to be fair and fairness and equality

[29:52]does not mean that you impose too much on a person that

[29:57]would that would be unfair so this is the second point now

[30:01]let's move on to the third point many of you are still

[30:04]wondering but at the end of the day we need that income

[30:10]today many middle-class families in Canada in Europe in the United States

[30:15]around the world they are dependent on two incomes so are you

[30:19]saying that women should not work we're going to lose that income

[30:23]first of all we said women should work but they should not

[30:27]work full time if they have children at home they have domestic

[30:31]obligations it's not really fair for them to have to have to

[30:38]work full-time so those hours it's recommended for them to be reduced

[30:42]and that of her working eight hours a day she could work

[30:45]five hours a day working part-time is not a problem that is

[30:50]more appropriate with her role and see so many obligations that she

[30:54]has now you'll be saying but if she works part-time that means

[30:58]she's going to earn less income so how do we address this

[31:04]problem one very fundamental point my dear brothers and sisters to understand

[31:09]when it comes to earning income in our families if we just

[31:14]pay attention to the resources that we waste the problem will be

[31:19]solved I'll give you an example here in Canada the average person

[31:27]spends 2,400 dollars on food and groceries per year 2,400 in Alberta

[31:32]it's about 2,800 here in Nova Scotia it's 2,200 so I give

[31:38]you credit for that you spend less and you're more frugal with

[31:42]your spending than other provinces in Canada now that's per person if

[31:47]you have a family of four how much are they spending on

[31:50]food and groceries per year that's about $10,000 if the average is

[31:56]2,400 per person if you have four that's just about $10,000 so

[32:01]an average family here in Canada is spending $10,000 a year on

[32:05]food and groceries okay so far we don't have a problem that's

[32:11]fine let them spend on food so what I'll share with you

[32:14]the second piece of statistics that tells you where the wrote the

[32:19]real problem is out of all this food that we buy how

[32:22]much is being wasted how much 40% official statistics forty percent of

[32:29]the fresh food that you buy we're not talking about rotten food

[32:34]we're talking about fresh food that family is just disposed of in

[32:38]the trash can forty percent of food is being wasted it's ending

[32:43]up in the trash so if a family is spending ten thousand

[32:50]dollars a year on food and forty percent of it is being

[32:52]wasted how much money is being wasted four thousand dollars an average

[33:00]family is wasting four thousand dollars okay now what now let's assume

[33:06]that you have a mother who's working outside the house let's say

[33:10]she's being paid twenty dollars per hour let's just say now twenty

[33:15]dollars per hour if she's being paid $4,000 is being wasted how

[33:23]many hours are really being wasted from work if she's being paid

[33:27]twenty dollars per hour and four thousand dollars are being wasted every

[33:32]year how many hours are being wasted 200 hours two hundred times

[33:37]twenty is four thousand that means two hundred hours of work every

[33:44]year are being wasted for God's sake it's not like you know

[33:48]sometimes even when you go and have fun okay you could say

[33:51]at least I had fun with that money this is food that's

[33:55]going directly into the trash nobody's eating it an absolute waste of

[33:59]resources two hundred hours do you know how much two hundred hours

[38:41]advertisements about food and that's taking a toll on them so the

[38:49]quantity is very important because your child is just being exposed to

[38:53]thousands of messages every day children on average watch about 4 hours

[38:58]of TV a day they're behind their screens 6 to 8 hours

[39:01]surfing the internet on their iPads imagine what's that's doing to their

[39:06]mind and mentality and their soul so spending a lot of time

[39:13]is extremely important however for those families who don't have this extra

[39:17]time they need to compensate how through quality time if you have

[39:22]an hour to spend with your children brothers and sisters you can

[39:26]use that hour to be of high quality and it can be

[39:33]impactful sometimes sir methods and raising children don't take much time they

[43:28]with each other mentally and spiritually and intellectually we need to live

[43:34]with our children's live with their growing minds teach them don't say

[43:39]they're young they understand teach them the philosophy of life teach them

[43:44]why God brought us here how we're being tested teach them to

[43:49]be patience look at the local man how he talks to his
