[0:18]respected brothers and sisters i extend to you my sincerest condolences on
[0:28]the martyrdom of the fifth imam of ahlil bait al-imam muhammad al-baqar
[0:35]numerous reports indicate that al-imam al-baqarah was martyred on the seventh day
[0:44]of the month of dulhajja in the year 114 after the hijrah
[0:49]there are so many lessons to learn from the life of this
[0:54]noble imam and the shining star of bayt was born in the
[1:05]holy city of madina in the year 57 after the hijrah his
[1:15]father is saying his grandfather is lived with his grandfather abu abdullah
[1:29]hussain for about three and a half years his mother is fatima
[1:38]bintul hassan fatima the daughter of imam al-hassan al-imam comes from the
[1:45]line of al-imam al-hasan and hussain his paternal grandfather is imam hussein
[1:50]and his maternal grandfather is so we find that the offspring of
[1:58]these two masters of the youth of paradise is what an ancestry
[2:06]imagine both of your grandparents are hasan and hussain he was born
[2:12]into the purest household and his mother father bintil hassan was known
[2:18]to be a very righteous woman in fact al imam her husband
[2:23]he would call her a siddhika the one who is excessive excessively
[2:28]truthful the one who's righteous she's honest with god honest with herself
[2:34]and honest with those around her when he was a young boy
[2:45]he witnessed the tragedy of karbala in year 61 imam al-baqarah was
[2:52]about three and a half years old imagine your childhood years witnessing
[2:57]such a great tragedy his mother fatima was also there she witnessed
[3:04]her uncle imam al-hussein being massacred she witnessed her brother al-qasim the
[3:10]son of al-imam al-hassan being massacred she witnessed her husband the imam
[3:16]zayn al-badin extremely ill and they were taken as prisoners of war
[3:19]imam al-baqarah was a three-year-old child when he was chained taken as
[3:26]a captive tortured on his way to damascus to syria were some
[3:33]of the challenges that he experienced he experienced in his childhood but
[3:42]was raised by his father al-imam zain lahabideen in the religious sciences
[3:53]in the natural sciences in spirituality and so he had the best
[4:00]role model in his life to raise him his father and also
[4:06]his impeccable mother what's unique about imam al-baqarah is that he was
[4:13]the first imam of ahil bait to have the opportunity to establish
[4:17]an islamic university he had relative freedom to raise a generation of
[4:27]scholars who were well-versed in islamic theology and islamic islamic the islamic
[4:35]legal system al-imam al-baqara had that opportunity so we can firmly state
[4:39]that he laid the foundations of the islamic university that graduated so
[4:48]many scholars later the leaders of all schools of thought would come
[4:53]from the school established by imam al-batr then advanced by his son
[5:00]al-imam so all those leaders of the other schools of abu hanifah
[5:04]malik ibn anas shafir and others they could not establish their schools
[5:11]of thought and access knowledge had it not been for this university
[5:17]so we find that islam raised a generation of scholars amongst his
[5:24]top companions are zorara eben aryan and muhammad ibn muslim surah ibnayan
[5:31]was a top scholar he came from a christian background his family
[5:35]came from a christian background but he had embraced the path of
[5:42]god and al-imam al-baqarah is the one who educated him he raised
[5:45]him initially he was not a follower of bait but by learning
[5:52]from imam al-baqarah salaam he became a follower of bait zorara was
[5:55]a top scholar he was a much tahit you know like modern
[5:59]day much to his merger other companions would go to him to
[6:07]ask him legal questions religious questions in fact in one hadith states
[6:12]one of the pillars of the earth when it comes to religion
[6:16]is zorara he's narrated thousands of hadiths from the imams of bait
[6:22]muhammad ibn muslim was another companion educated by imam al-baqara and raised
[6:28]to be a scholar he has narrated more than 40 000 traditions
[6:34]hadiths they're attributed to him one beautiful hadith states on the day
[6:40]of judgment allah will call prophets with their close companions who are
[6:45]the true disciples of jesus let them stand who are the honest
[6:50]companions of prophet muhammad sallallahu alaihi let them stand the companions of
[6:54]imam ali ibn abi stand then when the divine call comes who
[7:00]are the true companions of al-imam al-baqar zorara will stand up muhammad
[7:07]ibn muslim will stand up and a number of other companions every
[7:11]muslim today is indebted to the knowledge of imam now why is
[7:17]it that imam al-baqarah had this unique opportunity to start establishing this
[7:23]islamic university that's because al-imam al-baqarah he witnessed the umayyad dynasty and
[7:30]there were times when he had relative freedom to teach and there
[7:36]are several several reasons for that two quick reasons are the following
[7:40]number one the omaha caliphs were so corrupt busy with their corruption
[7:47]and injustice they were so distracted and imam al-baqara salaam found an
[7:53]opportunity to start educating the people sometimes when the ruler is so
[7:59]corrupt they don't even know what's going on out there in society
[8:02]they lose touch from reality they're out of touch with this life
[8:06]that's one factor another factor is that al-imam salaam witnessed the reign
[8:17]of some umayyad caliphs who were relatively better than other caliphs they
[8:24]were relatively just in their dealings with their people imam al-baqara initially
[8:33]witnessed the caliphate of abdul malik ibn marwan abdul malik ibn marwan
[8:39]was very vicious he was a tyrant a dictator a staunch enemy
[8:43]of the alibaba imagine abdul malik ibn marwan is the one who
[8:46]appointed al-hajjaj as his governor al-hajj was a blood thirsty governor is
[8:54]the one who would say if i were there in kerball i
[8:57]would fight imam hussain we're talking about a man with such an
[9:02]attitude we're talking about a governor who said that on the day
[9:09]of edel avaha what do we do on either yes it's a
[9:12]day that we celebrate pilgrims go to mecca but we slaughter an
[9:17]animal and we offer it to allah subhana wa to allah it's
[9:21]a sacrifice he would say go and find whoever his name is
[9:25]hussain and slaughter them this is al-hajjaj so can you imagine the
[9:33]environment that salaam initially had to experience with such a ruler with
[9:38]with such persecution in those times you could not dare say i
[9:42]love thee meaning the descendants of ali and fatima peace be upon
[9:50]them you would say that your house would be demolished your money
[9:52]and property would be confiscated and you'd be killed persecuted imprisoned then
[10:00]after that we find omar ibn abdul aziz he came to power
[10:06]after a couple of caliphs he came to power omar ibn abdelaziz
[10:13]he was he's considered as the most just amongst the umayyad caliphs
[10:21]generally speaking the omaha caliphs were very corrupt umar ibn abdelaziz was
[10:29]different for seventy years the omeids had made it a policy that
[10:34]imam is to be cursed from the pulpit so the leader of
[10:40]the friday prayer he'd start his speech by cursing imam ali omar
[10:43]bin abdulaziz banned that and um abdullah aziz sometimes would ask advice
[10:51]from imam al-baqarah one day was in the presence of umar bin
[10:59]abdul aziz and he asked him he told him can you share
[11:02]with me some words of advice it's a beautiful narration in this
[11:07]narration told him yes i'll give you three pieces of advice number
[11:13]one when you get happy you're satisfied with something make sure that
[11:20]happiness does not take you away from god my dear brothers and
[11:26]sisters is this applicable in our lives sometimes when you're excited you're
[11:29]happy you forget about god we start partying we get distracted in
[11:34]times of roughness and difficulty remember we have a lord but in
[11:39]times of goodness we too often forget we have a creator we
[11:43]have a lord and we start falling into sin i've seen some
[11:47]people instead of thanking allah for a victory for a success for
[11:51]a blessing that they have in their life they get so comfortable
[11:54]they start sinning we live in a society that's like that unfortunately
[12:00]look at our holidays what happens usually on holidays like new year's
[12:06]right people get drunk they stop partying the highest rates the highest
[12:13]rate of accidents here in the us is on new year's more
[12:15]people die from car accidents on new year than any other day
[12:21]when you look at the ratio why is that how you celebrate
[12:25]and you thank god by getting drunk and putting yourself and others
[12:30]in danger so the imam tells them when you become happy satisfied
[12:35]stay in god's obedience and when you become angry be careful stay
[12:42]in god's obedience some of us when we're ticked off or agitated
[12:46]we're angry we quickly react and we wrong others we make bad
[12:56]mistakes we make bad decisions beautiful words of advice from imam al-baqara
[13:01]speaking of anger and imam al-baqar narrates this uh interesting conversation that
[13:07]occurred between prophet noor alaihissalam and iblis after the flood iblis spoke
[13:15]to prophet noah sometimes you know the devil would would speak to
[13:18]some prophets of god the devil told prophet nooh beware in three
[13:26]moments i'm with you there are three moments when i am there
[13:30]influencing you and exerting my greatest influence number one when you get
[13:38]angry when you get angry i start circulating in your body brain
[13:44]mind heart like blood circulates in your body of course this is
[13:49]figurative but i'm very close to you when you're angry whenever you're
[13:54]angry be calm al-imam al-baqara gives us a beautiful anger management tip
[13:59]he says when you're angry change your state when you get that
[14:03]initial feeling of anger change your state if you're sitting down get
[14:11]up if you're standing sit down do with do something think about
[14:15]it then react don't allow yourself to quickly react so that's the
[14:19]first one then he says the second one the second state where
[14:23]i am very close to you ibilis is saying this to prophet
[14:28]noah is when you're judging between two people i influence you so
[14:31]you become biased and you oppress one over the other and you
[14:33]usually look at your own interests number three if there's a man
[14:39]and a woman and they're not mahram i am the third one
[14:45]i awaken their desires and i lead them to the path of
[14:49]immorality is giving advice to this umayyad ruler you get happy stay
[15:00]in god's obedience you get angry stay in god's obedience and if
[15:05]something is not yours give it back to its rightful owners and
[15:11]another word of advice told him you have to look at people
[15:19]not as just subjects but look at them in the following manner
[15:23]if that person is older than you consider him to be your
[15:28]father if that person is younger than you consider him to be
[15:32]your son and if that person is pretty much your age consider
[15:37]him to be your brother that's how you should look at people
[15:43]so we find that um sometimes he was open to hearing words
[15:46]of advice from al-imam al-baqara and imam al-baqarah did have an influence
[15:54]on him that is why out of the omeid rulers he was
[15:58]the least corrupt in fact many historians say he was just yes
[16:01]of course he never returned the caliphate to the imams of bait
[16:05]but other than that in dealing with people he was not bloodthirsty
[16:10]like other umayyid rulers so imam al-baqarah salaam lived in the era
[16:15]of ibn aziz then the next caliph who came to power after
[16:23]that is very vicious extremely vicious like his fathers and grandfathers and
[16:32]he had a lot of hatred towards the imams of bait one
[16:38]day imam al-baqara salaam was and there is a man by the
[16:48]name of nafa he was the servant of um is now talking
[16:53]to hisham abdul malik the caliph and they see imam al-baqarah entering
[16:57]the masjid and the people show him so much respect so he
[17:01]tells hashami bin abdul malik the caleb who is he he told
[17:05]him you don't know him this is the son of ali ibn
[17:09]hussain this is muhammad he comes from the albeit he told him
[17:15]really he thinks he's a scholar let me go and embarrass him
[17:17]nah goes and he's trying to test imam al-baqarah he told him
[17:22]i have questions for you if you're able to answer me then
[17:26]you are indeed the successor of the prophet salallahu no one knows
[17:32]these answers except the prophet or his successor he asks him a
[17:36]long list of questions very interesting questions and the imam answers them
[17:41]one by one amongst the questions that he later asked imam al-baqara
[17:45]about theology and god's existence he told him tell me about your
[17:51]lord meta book one was your lord like when did he exist
[17:54]imam al-islam told him was he not i'll tell you when he
[18:09]became beautiful words from the imam he's asking the imam tell me
[18:13]when did god come into being told me tell me when he
[18:18]was not existing for me to tell you when he came into
[18:21]existence allah was always there that's because god is not a physical
[18:25]entity allah is above time and space see time past present future
[18:32]is the result of motion right you have motion you have the
[18:36]conception of time allah is not physical he's not made of particles
[18:40]and atoms allah is above time and space subhan allah beautiful words
[18:47]from anima so the caliph at his time uh towards the end
[18:54]of his life was ibn abdul malik and he was really really
[18:57]vicious and imam al-baqara also interestingly met jabarbin abdullah al-ansari abdullah ansari
[19:08]was amongst the oldest surviving companions of the prophet once the prophet
[19:15]told him you will meet my grandson muhammad give him my salam
[19:21]jaber was old he had trouble with his vision he would sit
[19:26]at the doorstep of the masjid in medina and he would say
[19:29]al baqr where is the bakr people thought he was losing his
[19:35]sanity you know he's getting too old old age is affecting him
[19:39]what's the matter with you he told them it's none of your
[19:44]business my prophet told me that i shall meet his great-grandson i'm
[19:47]looking for him who is that al-baqar who's expounding knowledge because al-baqara
[19:53]in arabic means the one who splits the knowledge and expounds it
[19:58]that's the title that the prophet gave to his grandson so jabber
[20:02]was waiting when is he going to come what am i going
[20:07]to see this young boy then one day he saw a young
[20:10]boy in medina you saw him walking maybe playing with other children
[20:15]jabba realized this this is not a normal an average boy no
[20:21]no there's something unique about him he said to himself i swear
[20:25]by god this young boy walks like rasulullah he reminds me of
[20:32]the prophet so he called on him he told him my dear
[20:35]son who are you he told him i'm muhammad the son of
[20:45]ali the son of hussain the son of ali he told him
[20:49]you i've been waiting for you he hugged him he kissed him
[20:51]he told him i have an amana a trust to deliver to
[20:58]you your grandfather rasulullah told me you live long enough to meet
[21:04]my grandson give him my salah imagine receiving a special salam from
[21:08]the prophet sallallahu alaihi jabbar would go to the house of imam
[21:12]zayn in order to be educated by al-imam muhammad al-baqarah he told
[21:20]me educate me you're the imam you have divine knowledge and imam
[21:24]al-baqarah would educate jabber and then al-imam al-baqarah would tell him joy
[21:27]but you lived with my grandfather tell me about this incident and
[21:32]that incident tell me about this hadith when it was revealed they
[21:36]had a beautiful relationship with each other so we find that imam
[21:42]al-baqar carried the legacy of the prophet sallallahu alaihi in all fields
[21:47]not just the legal field my dear brothers and sisters but in
[21:52]all fields and imam al-baqarah taught us how to live in dignity
[21:57]was very big on halal income and working he demonstrated to his
[22:03]companions that it's never ashamed to work work even if it you
[22:07]you're using your own hands never say no i'm too important to
[22:14]work never say that one day at imam al-baqara salaam was seen
[22:19]sweating in the heats and in the midst of the heat of
[22:23]the sun was a hot summer day and he was working on
[22:27]a farm land so one of his companions passed by he told
[22:33]he looked at imam al-baqarah he told him this is miserable is
[22:39]that how much you love dunya that you're coming out in this
[22:47]heat and you're working the imam salaam basically told him you've misunderstood
[22:50]what religion is i am working so i bring halal income to
[22:55]my family and i protect my dignity and i don't beg from
[23:00]anyone that's not dunya you're accusing me of working for dunya i'm
[23:04]working for akhirah my dear brothers and sisters if you work hard
[23:08]for the sake of allah and you earn halal income and you
[23:12]bring food to your table and you protect you your dignity and
[23:18]your family's dignity you're working for the achara that's not dunya that
[23:25]man you're accusing me of working for dunya no i'm working for
[23:29]the look at the humbleness of imam al-baqarah he didn't have to
[23:34]work he could have found other ways to have money he's the
[23:37]grandson of the prophet sallallahu alaihi but al-imam al-baqarah made it a
[23:42]point to educate us work don't be lazy don't be idle with
[23:46]his own blessed hands he'd go out into the fields and he
[23:51]would work in those farms this is the greatness of this man
[23:56]and we honor the legacy of al-imam al-baqar alayhi i'd like to
[24:02]share with you a few words of wisdom from al-imam al-baqara in
[24:06]one beautiful hadith the imam ali salaam states imam says if you
[24:19]have a brother or sister in faith and you befriend this person
[24:24]for the sake of god and this person is a believer in
[24:28]god faked in reality you have a ray of god's light in
[24:36]your life a good friend is a ray that comes from the
[24:43]light of god that's how important it is my dear brothers and
[24:49]sisters seek good friends you befriend them for the sake of god
[24:53]and to get closer to allah ask yourself the friends that you
[24:54]have today why do you have them is it so you can
[24:56]just have fun entertainment is it because so you can sit with
[25:06]each other and talk about your desires or do you want them
[25:10]because you really want to satisfy allah this is an invitation from
[25:14]an imam al-baqara islam to re-examine our relationships with our friends and
[25:18]another beautiful hadith imam says whenever arrogance finds its way to your
[25:34]heart a chunk of your intellect is chipped away from you see
[25:37]we have the intellect that allows us to see right from wrong
[25:40]arrogance blinds the intellect you can no longer see right from wrong
[25:45]that's what arrogance does and another beautiful hadith states how miserable and
[25:58]wicked a person can be when this person is two-faced and has
[26:04]two tongues when his brother is there in his presence oh he
[26:13]praises him he's good to him but when he's absent he eats
[26:21]him alive he backbites is if he sees his brother excelling and
[26:27]being gifted and having blessings from allah he's super jealous and when
[26:34]his brother goes through a difficulty he lets him down he betrays
[26:37]him he's not there to help him this is a tragedy my
[26:43]dear brothers and sisters for some people to be two-faced remember allah
[26:48]is watching have i no shame when my lord is watching how
[26:51]am i going to justify this on the day of judgment in
[26:55]another hadith the imam ali salam states when he was asked about
[27:01]this verse let the human being look at his food before he
[27:05]eats it the imam says there's a deeper meaning to this verse
[27:09]and that means look at your knowledge who do you get it
[27:11]from if there is a plate of food that's presented to you
[27:18]and there is something in that food right it's not clean there's
[27:22]dirt in it or maybe there's a hair in it right have
[27:24]you seen people if you have a tray this big there's one
[27:26]strand of hair in it they'll throw it all in the trash
[27:29]you're not going to eat it if it's contaminated imam says you're
[27:34]very careful not to feed your stomach food that's not clean what
[27:42]about your mind do you feed your mind anything that's destructive the
[27:47]movies that you see the scenes that you see the things that
[27:50]you listen to the stuff that you do the things that you
[27:54]encounter in your life the knowledge that you're seeking is it beneficial
[27:58]to you or is it harmful think about these are some beautiful
[28:04]words of advice from the fifth imam of imam muhammad al-baqr once
[28:10]again i extend to you my sincerest condolences on the martyrdom of
[28:18]al-imam al-baqara he lived for 757 years he was born in the
[28:22]year 57 and he was martyred in the year 114 hashem even
[28:28]abdul malik the evil caliph the umayyad caliph he had his governor
[28:33]administer poison to al-imam al-baqarah and on the seventh day of the
[28:39]hajja he passed away as a shahid and he was buried in
[28:43]the bakke of medina we ask allah ta'ala to grant us the
[28:46]shaft and we ask allah to illuminate our hearts and minds with
[28:53]his knowledge was
