[0:05]foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign tonight it is the eve of the
[1:47]15th of the holy month of Ramadan and according to a popular
[1:51]tradition that the 15th of the holy month of Ramadan coincides with
[2:00]the birth of the second Imam al-hason and therefore tonight in sha
[2:10]Allah we will designate and dedicate the night to speak about Imam
[2:14]al-hasana one of his titles is Karim a little bait the generous
[2:22]of salaam so inshallah we ask Allah for the blessings of this
[2:27]great Imam to insha Allah bless us with his forgiveness and to
[2:32]grant us insha Allah and grant us the ziara of al-image our
[2:50]discussion tonight of Allah gives us tawfiq revolves around a letter that
[2:59]Imam wrote after the battle of sufin the Battle of sufin took
[3:10]place in the last few years in the life of salaam Allah
[3:15]during the time of and after the battle which was between himself
[3:22]and morawi having ABI Sofia on the other side when the battle
[3:29]finished although it did not really finish it did not end when
[3:35]it terminated afterwards wrote this letter to his son in his book
[3:51]compilation called he mentions this in letter number 31 it is one
[4:00]of the longest letters that the Imam alaihissalam has written that and
[4:05]the one that he wrote to malikel ashtab these two are probably
[4:08]amongst their two longest letters found in tonight insha Allah we will
[4:17]take few excerpts of this letter that the Imam salaam Allah wrote
[4:21]to his son and we will discuss these if Allah gives us
[4:29]taufiq first was born According to some historians in the year 3
[4:39]after Hijra this means he lived for approximately seven years with his
[4:49]grandfather rasulullah is then he lost them both in a short period
[4:57]of time in the year 11 after Hijra in the beginning of
[5:03]it and he continued his journey with his father until the year
[5:09]40 after was martyred he then took the responsibilities of khilafa and
[5:21]what I mean by Khalifa is the world otherwise he is also
[5:27]Khalifa to Allah and that he took the responsibility from the day
[5:32]he was born but after his father he took the worldly khilafa
[5:36]for six months after which unfortunately because of betrayals and the changes
[5:42]in the political circumstances was forced to have a peace treaty with
[5:49]marawi Urban Sofia following the footsteps of his grandfather rasulullah when he
[5:58]had a peace treaty in the year six after Hijra known as
[6:01]the Treaty of hodavia with the Muslim of Mecca so he followed
[6:06]the footsteps of rasulullah and he also had that peace treaty with
[6:11]and then the worldly Khalifa was assumed by Sofia who established the
[6:21]omeya dynasty after this and he stayed there for about 10 years
[6:35]until the year 50 after Hijra was then martyred poisoned and killed
[6:43]at the age of approximately 47 years old and he is buried
[6:47]in the cemetery of Pattaya this letter as I mentioned was written
[6:58]after the battle of saffin Yani within the last two three years
[7:01]of the life of salaam Allah this means at that time was
[7:11]in his 30s he was not a young man rather he was
[7:18]a developed person he participated in the battles with his father and
[7:24]that's what makes some historians and writers suggest that this letter was
[7:29]actually intended to the shihad to us more than it's like they
[7:41]say in Arabic I'm speaking to you but I really want the
[7:50]guy next door to listen to what I'm saying so the Imam
[7:55]salaam Allah is following the same approach that we find in the
[8:01]Quran the Quran also uses a similar style sometimes when Allah speaks
[8:07]to the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam when in fact he is not
[8:12]really intending the prophet sallallahu alaihi he's really intending us and hence
[8:18]we do have mentioned in kitabul kafi that suggests that the Quran
[8:26]was revealed in this context but we really want the Muslims to
[8:37]pay attention to what is being said here so in that similar
[8:41]manner since the speaking Quran and he is the living Quran he
[8:49]also implements the same teachings at the Quran and the style in
[8:53]this particular letter that he wrote it's a very long letter as
[8:57]I mentioned we'll take three aspects of it very briefly given the
[8:59]time that we have insha Allah first in this letter the Imam
[9:06]salaam Allah addresses and he talks several things in this letter amongst
[9:13]them odd theological things about it which are very important among the
[9:22]things that he mentions in his letter is he tells him son
[9:27]be aware that Allah is one and the proof that the Imam
[9:37]salaam Allah uses here and this sermon is unique he says for
[9:40]if there were other gods besides Allah we would have seen his
[9:47]Messengers yeah and if there was another Pro God another deity another
[9:54]Creator he would have sent us Prophets but all the prophets from
[10:01]Adam alaihissalam to the final prophetamolam they all speak about Allah so
[10:16]this suggests that there is only one Creator only one maker which
[10:21]is a very interesting proof that the Imam salaam uses the Quran
[10:27]uses different proofs about the existence of Allah but this is one
[10:31]of the proofs this suggests to us that it is indeed important
[10:37]for us to sit down and discuss with our children about theological
[10:42]matters our children also have theological questions sometimes interestingly even the younger
[10:48]kids they have very intriguing questions for example they might say why
[10:56]cannot we see Allah although a child may ask this question he
[11:01]or she may be five years old eight years old try to
[11:06]address the question of this child don't leave that question unanswered to
[11:12]the best of his or her knowledge and understanding so for example
[11:17]we can tell the child that Allah cannot be seen because he
[11:25]is not physical like you and me he cannot be confined in
[11:31]time and space and that's why he cannot be seen anything that
[11:35]we can see is confined in time and space so tell them
[11:38]for example you see this Holy Quran right now it means at
[11:43]this moment in time at this particular second it's right in this
[11:47]location it cannot be here and there at the same time but
[11:52]Allah can and therefore he cannot be confined in time and space
[11:56]simple answer but it will answer the question of this child very
[12:02]important I have come across a young man he was in his
[12:09]twenties his father came to me and said that my son is
[12:13]asking questions which suggest that he is no longer a believer in
[12:20]Allah so I went I started having a discussion with this young
[12:25]man and indeed unfortunately he was having some doubts so after having
[12:30]the conversation with him I asked him I said when did these
[12:35]doubts start when did you start thinking like this he said when
[12:40]I was 10 years of age so this has been going on
[12:45]for years now and I told them why didn't you ask when
[12:47]you were 10 years old he said I did once once I
[12:52]did but unfortunately the person whom he asked scolded and he spoke
[13:01]roughly to this child don't ask these questions it's not right so
[13:06]unfortunately this child then said I stopped asking questions but the question
[13:13]was not answered and more questions started to come and unfortunately it
[13:18]accumulated to the point where now that he is in his 20s
[13:21]it unfortunately resulted in him starting to have serious doubts about religion
[13:28]when in fact if you remember last night I mentioned that the
[13:33]belief in Allah is something that can be proven logically and that's
[13:41]something very important about the religion of Islam the religion of Islam
[13:46]especially the mother of [Music] one important and unique aspect of it
[13:55]is the osolidine the five roots of the religion what identifies us
[13:59]as Muslims or followers to be more specific the belief in Allah
[14:06]the prophethood the belief in the resurrection and then the adala the
[14:12]Divine Justice and Imam those all can be proven with logic without
[14:18]the use of a single verse from the Quran or a Hadith
[14:23]from the prophet and in fact used this methodology of logic deduction
[14:29]to affirm the existence of Allah of the Prophet when they used
[14:37]to talk to the atheist of their times people who are interested
[14:41]there is a very good book called It's been translated to English
[14:47]has very nice discussions by Imam about theological aspects and beliefs so
[14:52]that's something important in the religion of Islam these matters can be
[14:57]proven with logic so it's important we sit down and talk to
[15:02]our children about this I remember a few years ago there was
[15:08]a professor at a Catholic University in the city where I live
[15:15]it's called Edmonton Alberta Canada this professor he taught students who are
[15:22]graduate students in Christian theology at that college it's called Newman College
[15:27]so one day he got in touch with me and he said
[15:35]next week the class that we are teaching is about Islam so
[15:42]how about if I bring my students these are all graduate students
[15:48]Masters and PhD students we bring them to the center the religious
[15:52]Center where you talk and preach and you give that lesson you
[15:59]give the lecture talk about Islam so this way my students get
[16:01]the exposure of an Islamic Center plus they get to hear from
[16:06]a Muslim scholar I said why not bring them in so he
[16:11]comes and there were about seven students plus two guests that came
[16:16]along so all in all about maybe 10 people and he was
[16:19]there as well so I started talking to them presenting to them
[16:22]about what is the religion of Islam and so on so forth
[16:26]so I mentioned this concept that in Islam one thing that's really
[16:30]important is that theology the fundamental roots of the faith can all
[16:37]be proven logically they are not just faith-based Concepts now he intervened
[16:46]immediately and said same thing in Christianity I told him father correct
[16:51]me if I'm wrong but is the concept of Trinity a fundamental
[16:59]core Faith value in Christianity he said yes so I told them
[17:08]you would consider it as a root of the religion Trinity he
[17:11]said yes I told them to the best of my knowledge Trinity
[17:14]is not a logical concept it is a faith-based concept is that
[17:23]right he looked at me and said yes I told them thank
[17:27]you because the concept itself I don't want to get into Christian
[17:31]theology now but three is one and one is three it's difficult
[17:34]to prove logically you know at the same time okay so Islam
[17:40]has this concept and when he is talking theology and proves about
[17:49]the existence of Allah he is telling us we need to have
[17:56]this kind of conversations with our children so many times I tell
[18:01]students at schools in the Sherry schools or Islamic schools I tell
[18:07]them listen guys if you were to go home today and you
[18:10]find a wonderfully made cake on a table at the kitchen and
[18:16]you ask your mom mom who made the stable I heard this
[18:23]cake and Mom says I was out and I came and all
[18:29]of the sudden I saw the eggs came out of the fridge
[18:35]the milk came out of the fridge with the flour they all
[18:41]mixed together and then they put themselves into the oven and then
[18:45]it came out of the oven at exactly the right time then
[18:49]I saw the cream and the decorations all coming together and it
[18:54]made this cake by itself would you believe this and they were
[19:02]like no so I told them great why not it's like well
[19:04]someone must have made it why because it's a nice cake it's
[19:10]a delicious cake so somebody must have made this cake I told
[19:13]them there's someone who made this cake probably knows how to make
[19:17]a cake right like yes so he or she has knowledge yes
[19:22]they probably are able they have the ability and the power to
[19:25]make this cake yes all right so somebody made the cake someone
[19:29]who made it probably knows how to make it has knowledge has
[19:35]power has ability I told them so if a cake cannot make
[19:37]Itself by itself how can we believe that this whole universe made
[19:42]itself by itself very simple logic but it's very important it goes
[19:48]deep into the minds of these children is telling us that this
[19:57]is the kind of dialogue and conversation we need to be having
[20:01]with our children so that's one aspect of the or the letter
[20:06]of the Imam salaam Allah theological aspects second also is trying to
[20:14]purify his son make sure that he remains pure so he tells
[20:19]him in this part that we discussed son I advise you I
[20:33]admonish you to be God conscious remember Allah and a beautiful language
[20:41]he says a h a and then it's like you know speaking
[20:59]to him it's like you know when you speak to your child
[21:00]and you call him honey you know it's like honey you know
[21:04]you're trying to be sweet when you talk to your child Imam
[21:08]Eminem in a very sweet language even though Imam al-hassan is not
[21:19]a child as I mentioned this is he was born in the
[21:25]year three after Hijra salaam this is sometime in the year 38
[21:30]after Hijra so inshallah you are good at math how old is
[21:33]approximately he's about 35 years of age he's not a young boy
[21:40]but the Imam is still speaking to him in a very sweet
[21:42]language foreign my son I advise you to be God conscious beautiful
[21:56]thing I mentioned to you last night one of the goals of
[22:00]the holy month of Ramadan is what Allah [Music] in very simple
[22:11]basic terms one the first component is to do whatever Allah ordered
[22:20]and to refrain from whatever he ordered us to refrain from that's
[22:28]one second to do it all for the sake of Allah and
[22:32]that's why the degrees vary between people how much do they choose
[22:40]to follow and how much they choose to refrain and how much
[22:45]of what they do is purely for the sake of Allah so
[22:50]that's what varies between one person to another person you'll have people
[22:56]who submit to Allah [Music] surely Allah and his angels Send Their
[23:17]Blessings on the holy prophet sallallahu alaihi wasallam so all those who
[23:26]believe you also send your Salat and then [Music] some of us
[23:33]syrians say it is like the Salam that we say for example
[23:37]when we pray at the end of our Salat we say assalamu
[23:40]alaikum [Music] so a physical verbal Salam yes as possibly part of
[23:48]it but besides this on top of this meaning you submit is
[24:02][Music] no male and female believers when Allah and his messenger make
[24:16]a decree and he make an order if Allah makes an order
[24:21]you have no choice but to follow because he is the messenger
[24:28]of Allah [Music] he receives a revelation from Allah we don't receive
[24:42]a revelation from Allah so we have no right to question the
[24:48]commands of rasulullah and hence that varies between people how much do
[24:57]we submit that varies and hence the ranks vary of Allah some
[25:02]people are high highest status of tapua some people are at the
[25:07]shallow status but in this holy month of Ramadan we work towards
[25:11]ascending that ladder of taqwallah so that inshallah we can achieve the
[25:15]highest ranks it requires some struggle but it's doable so he tells
[25:23]him son or sick [Music] your heart revive your heart constantly build
[25:34]your heart with the remembrance of Allah it is said two Scholars
[25:45]one of them both of them both one of them was at
[25:53]a higher learned level than the other and he was socially more
[26:01]popular than the other just like in today's world you have some
[26:04]Mirage several one of them might have more mukalidine more followers for
[26:12]example than the other one although all are respected Okay so the
[26:19]one who was not as knowledgeable and not as socially popular visited
[26:26]the one who was more knowledgeable and more socially popular in his
[26:31]house when he came to visit him there were many people around
[26:36]they started having a conversation more of a discussion the discussion heated
[26:45]a little bit so this scholar who was less learned than the
[26:50]other one and less socially popular than the other one he used
[26:56]a comment that may not have been very appropriate against that other
[27:02]scholar who was more knowledgeable and more popular plus he's in his
[27:10]place all the people here are his followers so when the people
[27:14]sitting down hear this they were taken aback interestingly they saw that
[27:23]this scholar who was just if we use the words Loosely insulted
[27:28]or attacked he apologized to the other scholar who attacked him and
[27:41]bent down and kissed his hand and told him I am very
[27:49]sorry the other scholar obviously immediately hugged him and said nothing to
[27:53]apologize about it's okay you know this is a nature of academic
[27:59]discourse and so they hugged each other everything went well and this
[28:02]person leaves followers of this magazine that lead who was more popular
[28:09]more learned they were in shock he turned to them and he
[28:16]told them you are probably wondering why did I do what I
[28:19]did and they said yes he attacked you so how could you
[28:25]do this he said when he used these words then naturally human
[28:34]beings my evil commanding self and nafsa Basu told me how dare
[28:41]he speak to you in such language you speak back to him
[28:46]and you discipline him he is less knowledgeable than you less popular
[28:52]than you he said then I told my evil commanding self [Music]
[29:00]stay out of my business you don't dictate to me what I
[29:06]do I choose what to do so I am going to apologize
[29:14]to him my evil commanding self then said what apologize no no
[29:18]no no okay fine don't attack him but do not apologize to
[29:24]him now all this is happening within a split of a second
[29:27]you know I'm not sure if any one of you have ever
[29:30]experienced something like this where a circumstance happens a situation happens and
[29:36]all these things are happening in your mind within seconds here not
[29:39]even seconds split of a second so all this is happening here
[29:45]then I told my evil commanding self listen not only am I
[29:51]going to apologize to him I will bend down and kiss his
[29:53]hand as well so then I told my evil commanding self this
[30:01]will teach you to stay out of my business in the future
[30:08]I make the decision as what do I do not you so
[30:12]I apologize to him and I bent down and kissed his hand
[30:16]to teach myself that we obey Allah this is an example of
[30:28]taqwallah now how many of us would have done that how many
[30:32]times a person says one word we respond by ten words Masha
[30:39]Allah if you were only to come and see how many times
[30:41]we've had to deal with marital problems because of this issue the
[30:45]husband says a word the wife says a word and then mashallah
[30:50]escalates and unfortunately things become more complicated people wear like this island
[30:58]who was not masum he's like you and me he's a human
[31:03]being like the rest of us but he'll learn to control himself
[31:08]if we can learn to do this and we can then imagine
[31:13]what level we would be at so this is what I mean
[31:18]is teaching his son Imam al-hasan or Tempi God-fearing my son foreign
[31:43]make sure you build your heart with the remembrance of Allah if
[31:48]there is a heart in which the vehicle of Allah is filled
[31:55]with it then what kind of a heart is this full of
[32:00]the love of Allah in this holy month of Ramadan if you
[32:07]can foreign times as you get to work on the way back
[32:17]says it's good to say as per the Hadith narration attributed to
[32:33]him if you feel that the sins are becoming too heavy on
[32:36]your shoulders then say a lot of salawat Muhammad foreign [Music] destroys
[32:51]them just like you know sometimes when certain Engineers want to build
[32:57]a road in the middle of the mountain they sometimes use Dynamite
[33:00]to destroy the mountain to eradicate it so that they can build
[33:05]the roads destroys the sins just like this dynamite destroys the mountains
[33:13]foreign so these are important conversations the last aspect inshallah given the
[33:25]time I will touch upon on this or this letter that the
[33:28]Imam wrote is the following statement he says to his son he
[33:34]says Sonata [Music] foreign the heart of the young man is like
[34:00]a clear soil ready to be cultivated Farmers know this when they
[34:08]clear the soil they clear the ground and now it's ready to
[34:12]be cultivated at that point whatever seeds you can so that's the
[34:19]fruit you will bear of course depending on the climate of the
[34:25]region but the land is ready it's ready for whatever you put
[34:29]in it he says the heart of the young man is like
[34:32]this land ready to be cultivated so here I am I am
[34:40]coming to you now that you're at this stage to cultivate your
[34:43]heart with good before [Music] your heart becomes too solid too hard
[35:00]and your mind becomes preoccupied with so many things that's another important
[35:07]lesson we need to sit down and talk to our children about
[35:12]various what may can be considered controversial topics sit down and let
[35:18]them hear them from you before it's too late one day a
[35:23]man comes to me and he says can you please talk to
[35:26]my son his son was about I think when I spoke to
[35:31]him was 13 years old 13 year old and he said can
[35:36]you talk to him because he's asking a whole bunch of weird
[35:38]things like strange things so I tell him okay bring him over
[35:45]he brought he comes I speak to the Son and the son
[35:47]is one of those people now he's 13 year old so sometimes
[35:51]when you use the logic with a 13 year old he still
[35:54]does not really understand the essence of logic so whatever argument I
[35:58]present him with he flips to another argument and he flips to
[36:04]another argument and then to another so I have to drag him
[36:05]back to the first argument and say wait a minute we have
[36:08]to close this argument first and then we'll go on to the
[36:11]next ones but nonetheless after this like literally I may have spent
[36:15]about a couple hours with this kid with no result finally I
[36:20]asked him I said where did you get all this from he
[36:24]said YouTube so I tell them what do you watch on YouTube
[36:28]he said I watch this and this and so on so forth
[36:31]we're not listing a whole bunch of things that's when I turned
[36:33]to the father I said with all the respect it's your fault
[36:37]a 13 year old who gave him the device you just take
[36:42]this and say it here yeah go I'll see you later do
[36:49]whatever it is just don't bug me tell them you know with
[36:53]this comes a lot of responsibility this is the whole world at
[36:57]their fingertips you know once you have internet of course associated with
[37:02]it so you you gotta be responsible what is he watching in
[37:05]fact interestingly you know a side note here I don't want to
[37:11]digress but there are some cyber Security Experts who say children should
[37:17]not be given these tools to use in the bedroom because data
[37:23]shows that most of the cyber bullying and the cyber security problems
[37:29]that occur happen in the bedroom when the child is not under
[37:33]supervision or he thinks or she thinks she's not being supervised so
[37:39]that's when most of the problems occur therefore most of what the
[37:45]child does on this has to happen in the living room at
[37:48]least under the supervision if not like the direct supervision they know
[37:52]that you're in the background somewhere that you may come and take
[37:57]a peek and say what are you watching what are you doing
[38:00]that's important because when we give these tools to our children we
[38:08]must realize what comes with it the example I give or the
[38:10]analogy I give those of you who have a one-year-old or two-year-old
[38:12]child do you give them a knife and tell them here slice
[38:18]your bread why not because you're not mature enough yet you're worried
[38:22]that they might cut themselves well this has similar problems this in
[38:27]fact is more dangerous than the knife in some cases because it
[38:32]can corrupt their mind just like this 13 year old so I
[38:37]turned to the father and they said with all the respect it's
[38:40]all your fault you have to take responsibility for this you're bringing
[38:43]me your child now and you're telling me try to fix him
[38:48]in a quote unquote you know he's coming up with all these
[38:51]different strange thoughts but where were you when he was reading about
[38:58]them and learning about them and hearing about them what were you
