[4:25]Jewish Christian Buddhist and Hindu organizations across the country as well as
[4:32]universities such as Harvard MIT Stanford and many more um just before
[4:37]we continue I want to remind everyone that we have uh uh
[4:43]Salah Jama right after this uh lecture and there's another uh Arabic
[4:47]majus that will start after the Salat uh inshallah if you would
[4:51]stay as well and take the aure and now please help me
[4:56]welcome Dr s with Muhammad Muhammad alayum [Music] husin husin last year
[6:13]the Year 2023 has been called the year of Taylor Swift uh
[6:20]Taylor Swift one of the uh formidable pop stars uh was also
[6:24]voted by numerous magazines Publications as the person of the year if
[6:29]if you look at the economic impact of her concerts last year
[6:34]she had her uh world uh tour uh started off in the
[6:36]United States the economic impact was over five billion dollar just uh
[6:43]in the United States globally this year she's touring throughout Europe and
[6:48]and the um Americas it's expected to reach that much as well
[6:52]and it if you look at just uh beyond the economic impact
[6:57]that she's had just on a cultural impact uh her videos and
[7:00]S have been streamed over 40 billion times the population of the
[7:04]world is around 8 billion so this is about if every person
[7:09]in the world were to stream one video or one song Once
[7:13]be five times for every individual over 40 billion uh individuals they
[7:18]estimate that the number of unique users that Taylor Swift has is
[7:22]anywhere between 800 million to a billion people around the world meaning
[7:26]people that consider themselves fans and listen to her music music and
[7:30]uh the number that consider themselves what are called swifties meaning they're
[7:35]hardcore fans of of hers uh is a bit smaller but still
[7:41]not insignificant in the hundreds of millions of people but it's not
[7:46]just popular culture that she's impacted uh she's also impacted the academic
[7:52]setting so many universities over the last few years have actually taught
[7:57]classes looking at the lyrics of Taylor Swift including Harvard University last
[8:01]year so I live in Boston Harvard opened up a class about
[8:04]the lyrics and the literature of tlor Swift over 300 people signed
[8:08]up for the class it was over uh crowded cross the river
[8:14]Northeastern University also had a class on Taylor Swift and and it's
[8:18]not just um her literature Business Schools are talking about the business
[8:22]Talent of uh Taylor Swift there Business Schools Stanford Berkeley NYU UT
[8:28]Austin among many others that have studied the phenomenon of Tor Swift
[8:32]and and what is called Swift onomics or or Swifty and so
[8:37]I think within this type of a environment one can take one
[8:43]of three approaches we as a community can look at this phenomenon
[8:48]and say this completely is not relevant to us and we can
[8:51]sort of bury our heads in the send and assume that it
[8:54]doesn't exist that's one approach and I think that's a relevant approach
[8:57]another approach is to to uh completely buy into this pop phenomenon
[9:01]and say well if my neighbor is a Swifty and my teacher
[9:06]is a Swifty and if they're teaching this in class I'm going
[9:08]to just assimilate with the uh pop uh culture and try to
[9:13]become a fan as well that's a second approach so we have
[9:16]two extremes one approach completely ignore the phenomenon second approach completely assimilate
[9:22]into it the third approach and what I want to do here
[9:25]tonight is we try to understand this phenomenon and actually what is
[9:31]it that makes this individual such a compelling figure that has impacted
[9:37]both the economics of different countries the literature of different countries but
[9:40]also the mainstream consciousness of different countries and and the questions that
[9:46]you know one can ask within this context is what makes her
[9:49]such a phenomenon what makes people connect to her and importantly what
[9:56]can we learn about their mode of influence and I want to
[9:59]use this as a found Foundation to better understand the leadership style
[10:04]to compare and contrast the modes of influence of this pop phenomenon
[10:08]of Taylor Swift to the longlasting impact in leadership style of F
[10:17]and Z so tonight's lecture will be divided into three parts in
[10:23]the first part a very academic and uh just sort of objective
[10:27]analysis of what is it that makes this Taylor Swift phenomenon so
[10:31]prevalent and what can we learn about the the path that uh
[10:36]that this is impacting individuals and the second part and and the
[10:40]the the takeaway here the uh conclusion just so that you know
[10:42]before we uh get to it is that I think it's uh
[10:46]not just the uh mainstream marketing or the marketing of Taylor Swift
[10:50]that's made her a phenomenon she's actually touched people on a literary
[10:53]level so her lyrics and her songwriting has touched people emotionally and
[10:59]I think that's the punchline here for tonight that her leadership style
[11:04]is built first and foremost on this ability to connect with people
[11:08]on on the level of the word but then it's magnified by
[11:13]a pop marketing Machinery that makes her uh word so prevalent around
[11:17]the world so that's the punchline now if we're going to base
[11:19]it on this concept of the word I want to take a
[11:23]deep dive into the words of and because there's some deep lesson
[11:29]here to understand between the words of a pop phenomenon like Taylor
[11:36]Swift and and the words of spiritual figures like and I want
[11:41]to link it in the third part to the events of and
[11:46]but before we get started please let us recite a loud salaat
[11:52]now some people may say well brother you know sad what is
[11:57]this this isn't the appropriate environment why are we talking about about
[12:01]Taylor Swift this is Ash we're all sad you know this is
[12:03]a an occasion for mourning and for um and lamenting the events
[12:10]of Ash and that's correct but I would remind people of the
[12:14]way that Allah subhah wa taala challenges the m and the non-m
[12:20]to approach the phenomenons around them around the world Allah subhana wa
[12:25]tala in the Quran has a beautiful Ayah where the non-believers also
[12:27]question some of the metaphors in examples that Allah brought and Allah
[12:32]responds to them by saying Allah subhah waala is not embarrassed to
[12:42]give you an example of a fly or a knot or a
[12:46]mosquito and taking this as an example to teach you a lesson
[12:48]by which so those who believe know that the example of the
[13:01]mosquito and in the fly is a is an example for reflection
[13:07]and those who don't believe say why is Allah bringing up this
[13:11]example of the mosquito Allah subhana waala only sets to um essentially
[13:22]misguide the so here what Allah subhana wa tala is saying is
[13:26]he's challenging us that everything that exists in creation whether it's the
[13:30]mosquito the the uh the the camel Allah subhana for example says
[13:38]have they not reflected on How the Camel was created brings up
[13:46]the example of the bat of the uh of the uh peacock
[13:51]so here Allah subhana wa tala is saying all of my creation
[13:54]has been put here on Earth for you to reflect on and
[13:59]just by simply reflecting on it doesn't mean that you're comparing two
[14:02]things in a way that denigrates from one thing and elevates from
[14:06]the other meaning by talking about the example of Taylor Swift it
[14:10]doesn't mean that we're taking away from the Legacy or the elevation
[14:15]of fa and Z but no it's a great way to compare
[14:22]and contrast something which is spiritually connected to the Universe versus something
[14:26]which is temporarily connected to the universe and subhana wa T makes
[14:30]it very clear he says whatever we compare the the thing which
[14:36]is pure is not equal to the thing which is has many
[14:42]meanings one meaning of is impure one meaning ofi is something which
[14:48]is temporary or transient one meaning of kabi is something which has
[14:54]a fixed shelf life or a fixed lifetime so Allah says even
[15:00]though the things that are have been overwhelming this entire Society so
[15:13]have God Consciousness so that you may be successful so in many
[15:17]ways by recognizing the thing which is and contrasting it which the
[15:23]with the thing which is this is almost like a way or
[15:25]a safeguarding a tawa so that we may become more God conscious
[15:30]and be able to discern between the things which are right and
[15:33]the things which are incorrect muhamad muhamad so as I mentioned um
[15:42]you know ultimately what has made Taylor Swift such a big phenomenon
[15:46]it's not really uh her marketing Machinery although that's helped amplify her
[15:51]message it's not uh her uh music but it's really the words
[15:55]of the music that have really uh brought her to to become
[16:00]such a impactful figure and there's a really great analysis by the
[16:03]New York Times by a reporter a 48-year-old reporter named Taffy um
[16:07]akner who looks at the lyrics of uh Taylor Swift and she
[16:12]says you know many people they they perceive them as simple love
[16:16]language or love stories that talk about uh girlhood but actually the
[16:23]words of the lyrics of T tlor Swift have a deeper meaning
[16:25]what they talk about is in the in the form of love
[16:30]songs what they do is they talk about her journey from girlhood
[16:33]to Womanhood and they describe the pain and challenges that she's faced
[16:37]at every step of her life so for example uh when she
[16:43]was young and was living on her own she has a song
[16:45]that conveys that uh that that feeling of emotional Detachment in that
[16:52]song when she was going through some business challenges her manager uh
[16:57]stole some money from her and sold her U master records she
[17:00]has a song that describes that betrayal by her business manager but
[17:05]she conveys it in the form of love stories and love language
[17:10]and uh love songs so really what she's been able to do
[17:13]is by using her words the the songs she has written have
[17:18]been able to connect with people on many levels they are personal
[17:21]stories that describe her journey from girl girlhood to Womanhood and they
[17:26]talk about Universal themes and experiences and touch people on an emotional
[17:30]level and you know I I didn't really believe this until I
[17:35]started reading some of the comments under some of the uh videos
[17:37]that she has online it's really interesting it's an interesting exercise so
[17:41]look under the uh videos this individual says my dad passed away
[17:45]5 days ago I'll turn 43 in two days when we bury
[17:50]him this song has always resonated with me but does much more
[17:53]now and will always hold a special place in my heart another
[17:58]individual I lost my dad two years ago every single time I
[18:00]listen to the song I cry like a baby but then I
[18:04]feel relief thank you Taylor so we can easily dismiss this phenomenon
[18:08]and say it's a transient pop culture phenomenon but the reality is
[18:12]the words of this individual have touched people on an emotional level
[18:19]and have enabled them to connect to to such a way that
[18:22]has made them essentially what are uh swifties so I think the
[18:27]uh main uh take and we can uh spend more time here
[18:28]but I think this uh suffices for the discussion that you know
[18:33]the phenomenon isn't something to be dismissed but it's something to be
[18:35]understood and what we can understand here in this example is the
[18:42]power of the word so words have the impact of of uh
[18:44]impacting people on an emotional level uh but they also have the
[18:50]impact or the ability to impact people on a spiritual level and
[18:53]an intellectual level and this is where I want to now transition
[18:59]into the example of because many of us claim to be F
[19:05]so like there are many people who are swifties they've memorized every
[19:08]single word of her lyrics but many of us who claim to
[19:10]be faam how many of us have memorized the words of fa
[19:16]zah many of us if we mention the the concept of tlor
[19:21]Swift say well yes I know this song and I know this
[19:24]song or I know this phenomenon or this phenomenon and then we
[19:27]become ashamed when we mention uh we say f z but how
[19:31]many of us have truly understood and and internalized the words of
[19:37]fat and particularly the words of f during her most challenging moment
[19:41]in life which is immediately after the death of the Prophet when
[19:45]when the land of fedek was confiscated from her so what I
[19:50]want to do in the next section is take a deeper dive
[19:52]into the words of f if Taylor Swift has been able to
[19:58]impact people through the through work words then one would think that
[20:01]the words of f will have a deeper and more profound meaning
[20:06]and yet the tragedy is many of us have not really understood
[20:08]the words of faat let alone internalize them into our daily life
[20:12]let alone reflected on them so let's spend the next few minutes
[20:16]reflecting on the speech of at the event of fed the fedad
[20:26]so what is fed fed was a piece of land many of
[20:31]you have heard of fedc but many of us we assume that
[20:36]fedc was a small piece of date Orchard very small you know
[20:39]meaningless uh piece of land uh but but the reality is very
[20:44]different and we'll get into the uh importance of fed not just
[20:47]for but really the events of fed set up the events of
[20:52]s which set up the events of carala and the tragedy that
[20:59]the Muslim um is today is because of this fundamental Injustice that
[21:03]occurred in fedek and the reason that the Muslim um today is
[21:07]so divided and so confused is because of this lack of understanding
[21:12]of the fundamental events of fedc so let's take a deeper dive
[21:15]into fedc fedc as I mentioned was a piece of land it
[21:19]was a spoil of war that was surrendered to the prophet as
[21:21]part of this peace settlement so the prophet sallallah alai wasam uh
[21:25]went into battle with with some of the Jewish tribes and as
[21:30]an outcome of that battle uh the prophet Sall wasam received the
[21:37]land of as part of the peace settlement with the Jewish tribes
[21:42]immediately after receiving this land of fed from the uh Jewish tribes
[21:47]Allah subhah wa ta'ala reveals the following Ayah and this is an
[21:54]important Ayah Surah 59 Ayah 7 Allah subhah waala says whatever the
[22:00]prophet has received as a booty of War as a spoil of
[22:05]War a a is a type of spoil of war that comes
[22:09]through peaceful means so it's not that the prophet forcefully seized fedek
[22:13]from the Jewish tribes it was given to the prophet as part
[22:17]of a peace settlement so whatever Allah subhana wa T has given
[22:25]to the Prophet this Ayah 597 all of the scholars of Islam
[22:30]are un unanimously agreed upon that this is in reference to this
[22:39]belongs this land belongs to Allah and belongs to the messenger of
[22:45]Allah and to the relatives of the Prophet so this is a
[22:51]direct order and command from Allah subhana wa tala that the land
[22:55]of fedc which has been given to the prophet belongs to the
[23:01]prophet to uh has been given to by Allah to the prophet
[23:03]belongs to the prophet his family what and it also belongs to
[23:15]the uh orphans it belongs to the uh poor and it belongs
[23:17]to the prisoners of war and Allah subhana wa tala say says
[23:25]and so fed was given as a source of um as a
[23:32]gift to the prophet and then was gifted to F by Allah
[23:36]subh and it was meant as a means to take care of
[23:42]the orphans the uh poor and the prisoners of war and Allah
[23:48]subhana wa tala tells us in Ayah 550 Ayah 7 Surah 59
[23:51]um and and um so that wealth may not merely circulate among
[23:57]your rich so this was a trust that Allah subhana wa tala
[24:05]gave to the prophet Prophet immediately gave it to F so that
[24:11]they can take care of the community of poor Muslims that were
[24:14]living in the city of Medina and in fact what ended up
[24:17]happening was uh immediately uh and this is a narration that IM
[24:25]tells us and this is revealed from IM IM imak was asked
[24:31]about this Ayah said when this Ayah was revealed the prophet gave
[24:35]fed to fa and one of his students asked the prophet gave
[24:40]it to her meaning did the prophet gave her fedc the Imam
[24:42]stressed Allah gave it to her this was a gift from Allah
[24:48]subhah wa taala with multiple mentions in the Quran why was it
[24:52]granted to F that deck was granted to FAA during the prophet's
[24:59]lifetime she and and she managed it for two years so uh
[25:01]the Battle of kar occurred in probably the seventh or eth year
[25:07]after Hijra the prophet himself passed away in the 10th year after
[25:09]hij so fed was in the possession of for about two to
[25:15]three years depending on uh the history that you read when fa
[25:20]received fedc she immediately appointed deputies to take care of fed and
[25:26]it said that according toj fed would yield on an annual basis
[25:30]24,000 din now just to give you the uh understanding of what
[25:36]A din is One D at the time and this is according
[25:40]to the orientalist scholars One D at the time was equivalent to
[25:44]4.4 grams of gold so in a single year the land of
[25:50]fedc would yield about 106 kilograms of gold or 234 lbs of
[25:53]gold the equivalent wealth of about 234 lb of gold so many
[25:58]of us misunderstand fedc we think fedc is a small piece of
[26:01]land a date Orchard which was a thing that belonged to FAA
[26:07]and she became angry when Abu Bakr uh came and and to
[26:10]took it from her no my dear brothers and sisters fedak was
[26:15]a direct gift from Allah to the prophet That Was Then gifted
[26:20]to F for the purpose of taking care of the community and
[26:24]distributing the wealth among the uh among all of those that are
[26:27]uh needing and overlooked and oppressed it wasn't the personal possession of
[26:35]FAA it was the trust that was given to FAA because the
[26:36]prophet knew that fa would take care of the needy the oppressed
[26:41]and the orphans and he knew that by violating this trust the
[26:45]uh um was essentially uh go going to go downhill so after
[26:48]assuming power and this is another misunderstanding many people when the prophet
[26:53]wasam passed away and the waat of the Prophet we're going to
[26:56]uh commemorate it next week so next week is the um uh
[27:01]the date of the death of the uh Prophet um and and
[27:04]this is uh so it occurred in these types of days after
[27:07]the uh Prophet passed away uh Abu Bakr uh immediately dismissed the
[27:14]deputies of FAA from fedc he dismissed them essentially took them away
[27:18]and he made fedc state property and how did he justify this
[27:22]stealing a fedc from FAA actually not from FAA he stole it
[27:28]from the prophet and from Allah subhana wa T how did he
[27:32]justify this uh this brutal theft Abu Bakr uh narrated The Following
[27:38]this is he purportedly heard it from the prophet Prophet said we
[27:45]do not give away inheritance we as prophets do not uh give
[27:49]away inheritance everything that we have a sodak for the uh people
[27:52]so um our property cannot be inherited so Abu Beck Justified the
[27:56]theft of fed is great land which as I mentioned was giving
[28:02]about the equivalent of 234 lounds of uh gold in terms of
[28:05]wealth on a yearly basis he stole fedek because of two strategic
[28:10]advantages that fedek represented to B fedc represented a financial advantage by
[28:17]controlling fedc they were able to control the wealth and how it
[28:22]was spent in the community so that the wealth wasn't being accumul
[28:26]accumulated by a small group of people but was actually being distributed
[28:29]for the benefit of the majority of the individuals secondly it's a
[28:35]symbolic show of power and authority the prophet gifted fed to F
[28:39]Abu Bakr wants to demonstrate his authority so he steals it and
[28:46]this is ultimately a symbol of his power that there's a new
[28:49]uh sheriff in town a new individual in town that's going to
[28:54]uh take over for the uh Community now the question becomes how
[28:57]did FAA respond how did FAA demonstrate her leadership in this moment
[29:02]of Oppression and in this moment of theft the first thing that
[29:09]she did is she mobilized people she went to the people the
[29:12]male leaders of Medina and reminded them of their obligation and she
[29:17]was going door too with IM Ali with IM Hass IM hin
[29:22]and Z so I want you to imagine this image right now
[29:26]immediately after the death of the prophet that this this uh gift
[29:31]from Allah has been seized and taken away from FAA FAA immediately
[29:36]mobilizes the community in partnership with IM by going door Todo to
[29:42]the community members and why was she initially going to the community
[29:45]members or the community leaders because many of the people of Medina
[29:49]the ansar these were the people that pledged allegiance to the prophet
[29:54]they pledged in this is the Pledge or the treaty ofba that
[29:58]they would take care of the prophet and they would take care
[30:04]of the uh family of the Prophet F when Fed was uh
[30:06]uh was unjustly seized uh from her and from her family she
[30:12]mobilized the people she went door too and she reminded them of
[30:15]their promise to the prophet she said oh people of the of
[30:21]Medina have you forgotten your promise to the uh Prophet that you
[30:24]would protect the prophet that you would protect the family of the
[30:27]prophet in b and she went and tells us about this particular
[30:34]story where she went to a man named ma jab ma jab
[30:38]was one of the leaders of Medina and she goes to him
[30:41]and she says ma do you not remember this pledge that you
[30:45]made to my father to protect uh the the prophet and to
[30:48]protect the uh family M says yes I remember but have the
[30:53]rest of the people of Medina remembered this pledge as well and
[30:56]she said no no one has joined me in the uh in
[30:59]in defending this pledge so M ja says then I will not
[31:04]join you as well so the entirety of the community when it
[31:06]was the the most important moment in the time of abandoned their
[31:12]pledge to the prophet and abandoned their pledge to abandon their pledge
[31:19]to IM Hass IM Hussein and IMI muhamad so she went door
[31:29]to door and she found no leaders of the ansar that were
[31:31]mobilizing with her she did however uh so she went to Abu
[31:38]and directly confronted him with the uh with the uh a of
[31:41]um of the um of inheritance so her cries fell on death
[31:55]deaf ears the men all shied away would go door Todo with
[32:00]IM Ali IM Hassan IM Hussein and Z but Abu Bakr told
[32:06]fa to bring forward witnesses that would verify that fed belonged to
[32:14]her and the only witnesses that came forth were two women and
[32:17]this is narrated by Al Majesty the first woman is a woman
[32:25]named Baraka or she's an important figure in in in the history
[32:28]of Islam both among the followers of and among the uh followers
[32:32]of the uh broader Muslim Community Barak or amen was an individual
[32:38]of African descent she was a servant to Abdullah Abdullah the father
[32:43]of the prophet and then when the prophet's father passed away she
[32:49]was a servant to am the mother of the prophet and was
[32:53]entrusted with the care of the young Prophet she was like a
[32:58]second mother to the the prophet she married and then had a
[33:05]son named a and that's how she got the or the name
[33:08]she participated in the battlefields in and many people forget that in
[33:14]the early Muslim uh Community it was both men and women that
[33:18]were participating in the battlefield and om amen was a really courageous
[33:22]figure who was participating in the battlefield when all of the men
[33:27]at ran away aen stood firm by the prophet and was there
[33:30]to protect him so um aen is an important individual in the
[33:35]life of the uh Prophet she's a very reliable narrator of Hadith
[33:38]in both the Sunni and the sh traditions and and after her
[33:46]uh uh husband passed away she married an individual named um Zade
[33:51]Zade who uh all of you know is one of the early
[33:54]Companions of the prophet and they had a sec a son named
[33:59]Usama IB Zade so or or Baraka was the mother of both
[34:05]aan and Usama IB Z two important companions in the lifetime of
[34:09]the Prophet IM tells us that women will be significant contributors to
[34:14]the cause of global Justice and there's a famous Hadith that's been
[34:18]narrated where he names specifically seven female companions of the Imam with
[34:24]being one of them so she's an important figure in the history
[34:30]of both Sunni and Sh um uh the followers of Islam om
[34:33]aen was one of the individuals that followed F and bore witness
[34:41]that fed belonged to FAA and was not the um property of
[34:47]Abu Bakr the second individual who was a witness to fa was
[34:50]a woman named Asma om and she's om and she's an important
[34:56]figure she's a she was initially the wife of Ja I ABB
[34:58]so the brother of IM Ali this is his wife and after
[35:08]jab abali passed away she uh became the uh mother the wife
[35:12]of Abu Bakr so she was Abu bakr's wife and she was
[35:18]the mother of Muhammad IB Abu Bakr and she stood firm she
[35:21]stood as a witness against her own husband in support of f
[35:26]so fat Z brought forth these two individuals as and as witnesses
[35:36]that FC belonged to um uh to her now ultimately and and
[35:42]she's an important figure because she also helped Imam wash and shroud
[35:46]FAA after her death now eventually all of these things fell on
[35:51]death years so 10 days after the death of the Prophet uh
[35:57]wanted to directly confront Abu Bakr but also wanted to remind the
[36:01]broader Muslim uh community of their obligation of defending the prophet Sall
[36:06]alai wasam and defending her right with respect to fed and this
[36:12]is where the sermon of fed or Al fed as it's called
[36:15]um was recited the marched to the to the Masjid of the
[36:21]Prophet with a group of uh individuals and she goes deep into
[36:26]the sermon of Al fedc or and it's an important uh sermon
[36:31]unfortunately it hasn't been given much um focus or interest there's a
[36:37]recent book that was actually published last year by a scholar named
[36:41]Mah in in the west she's a scholar at um Berkeley theological
[36:46]Union in California and this is a book that's been published by
[36:49]Cambridge University press in in the United Kingdom the name of the
[36:56]uh book is a study of the sermon of FAA the long
[36:57]title as feminist Theology and social justice in Islam so I would
[37:02]urge all of you to look at this book because it's a
[37:03]deep analysis of the sermon of fed and what does um what
[37:09]does the sermon of fedek tell us well you know it's interesting
[37:11]because the sermon of fed is divided into eight parts or two
[37:17]major sections so remember here she's confronting Abu Bakr for stealing her
[37:21]property of fed and many of us if we've been if our
[37:26]um property has been violated or someone has stolen something from us
[37:30]we EV we uh immediately want to go and confront them and
[37:34]tell them why have you taken this thing which belongs to me
[37:38]but look at the way that confronts Abu Bak it's not an
[37:44]A matter about her but she wants to elevate the discussion to
[37:49]reveal the fundamental principles of Justice anded in this example of the
[37:54]stealing of fedek it's a beautiful sermon again it's something worth a
[37:58]deep dive into so in the sermon of divides it into eight
[38:05]parts and you know the eight parts uh just uh briefly we
[38:07]can uh break them down into at the beginning she starts with
[38:13]the praise of Allah and talks about the importance of IM the
[38:19]Quran fasting and Justice this is the first part of in the
[38:25]second section she reminds the people of her special connection to the
[38:28]prophet and she critiques the Muslims for neglecting their duties to the
[38:33]prophet and to the and this is where she brings up the
[38:39]issue of fed but doesn't immediately go into the issue of fed
[38:44]she starts off her sermon of by praising Allah subhana wa tala
[38:51]she says ald so she starts with the praise of Allah subhah
[39:06]wa taala and then she goes into the deep dive of reminding
[39:14]the people who she is she says she says recognize that I
[39:19]am fa oh people you know you've neglected your duty recognize who
[39:24]I am she says muhamad s Alam and my father is Muhammad
[39:56]she says I am the daughter of Muhammad s Al wasam the
[40:01]same Prophet who is mentioned in the Quran as being a source
[40:04]of Rah for you and if you miss this Prophet recognize that
[40:09]he is among your women meaning me recognize that FAA is here
[40:16]among you and recognize that his cousin is among your men again
[40:20]reminding the community so this of was was directed to Abu Bak
[40:27]but it was also Direct Ed to the broader Muslim audience oh
[40:30]Muslims the prophet has just passed away 10 days ago and you've
[40:33]completely neglected your obligation to the you've neglected your obligation to the
[40:39]prophet she reminds them of the importance ofat and so on and
[40:45]altogether and and this is a really important thing Abu Bakr brings
[40:48]up one Hadith that had no other narrators that the uh prophets
[40:56]do not U uh leave behind inheritance responds to this one we
[41:02]narration with a that contains 28 verses from the Quran in this
[41:08]one sermon she responds to a weak Hadith from Abu Bakr with
[41:14]28 verses directly from the Quran essentially uh annihilating and breaking down
[41:18]the um the uh the uh argument of Abu Bakr FAA mobilized
[41:25]the Quran and Theological themes to remind herself Abu Bakr and the
[41:29]Muslims that they played an important role in determining how Faith impacts
[41:33]the unfolding of events meaning if you truly stand for justice how
[41:40]how will you respond during those moments where Justice is the most
[41:44]meaningful will you run away like the majority of the Muslims or
[41:47]will you confront Injustice by standing with those that are oppressed like
[41:52]fa and so she uses this and it's a really interesting uh
[41:57]Speech again because it's important to note that FAA began her sermon
[42:01]of protest with words of Allah's praise alhamdulillah alhamdulillah for everything and
[42:08]her complaints and grievances were not with Allah subhah wa ta'ala but
[42:13]with Abu bakr's abuse of power and importantly the inaction of the
[42:20]people of Faith the Muslims who claimed to be Muslims and followers
[42:24]of the Prophet they neglected their basic obligation to f and that
[42:28]led to the entirety the uh beginning of the end of the
[42:33]Muslim Community that laid the foundation for the Injustice that happened inala
[42:38]it all goes back to fed my dear brothers and sisters and
[42:44]so when we look at the um value of fedc you know
[42:48]uh fedc is not just a piece of land many of us
[42:51]misunderstand fedc we think it's a piece of land but really it
[42:55]was a gift from Allah that was an enablement for creating a
[42:59]community based on equality and on Justice and distribution of wealth and
[43:04]property among the community so that it doesn't belong to a certain
[43:07]group of uh people Z witnessed all of these events when she
[43:12]was a young girl four to six years old uh you know
[43:17]according to the various narration she was going around with IM aliam
[43:22]and her brothers IM Hassan and IM Hussein and and so there's
[43:28]a symb value of fed where um there's an interesting narration one
[43:33]time um IM was invited by Haron Rashid the Khalifa of the
[43:38]Abbasi um Empire and uh Haron asks imum he says I want
[43:46]to give fed back to you because it was taken by Abu
[43:50]Bakr and then maintained by the amois except for a brief period
[43:53]by Omar ABD but then the Abbasid take it took it over
[43:58]again and and now um harun is talking to IM and says
[44:00]I want to give fed back to you and IM says I'll
[44:06]accept fed on one condition that you give me all of fed
[44:12]and Haron says well okay fine Define for me the boundaries of
[44:14]fed and Imam Alum says if I Define for you the boundaries
[44:19]of fed you will not be happy you'll become very upset said
[44:22]no tell me the boundaries of fedc says the boundaries of fedc
[44:26]begin in Africa extend all the way to Asia extend to uh
[44:30]to the north to um the caucuses and to the South to
[44:36]uh parts of Africa meaning fed is not a land of property
[44:42]but is the the will of the Muslims and harun Rashid becomes
[44:45]upset by this response so the point is that fedc the uh
[44:53]the theft of fed is symbolic theft of the of from the
[44:56]Muslim community and it laid the foundation fora so if we go
[45:02]toala say Z the sermon of Z resonates with the with the
[45:09]FED fa because they both spoke truth to the political powers of
[45:15]the time and use the Quran and a deep understanding of theology
[45:18]to seek Justice for the oppressed if you look at the of
[45:22]Z it's the Apple doesn't fall far from the tree the way
[45:28]that her mother confronted Injustice is the same way that Z confronted
[45:32]Injustice she Begins by saying ald again beginning with the praise of
[45:38]Allah ald so here Z starts off with the praise of uh
[46:06]of of of Allah subhana wa taala but she she has a
[46:09]a really um uh uh unique sense of humor where she denigrates
[46:14]ya so remember she's just gone through the oppression of witnessing the
[46:20]injustices on the battlefield of carala but she still retains this um
[46:25]this really powerful wit and this really power powerful ability to deploy
[46:30]language in a way that takes down her enemies taking down the
[46:34]enemies not by swords or physical violence but through her words in
[46:38]these words what I just recited she tells yazid in the Palace
[46:43]of yazid confronting the unjust oppressor what an evil place you have
[46:47]Acquired and what a feeble Army you possess essentially confronting and taunting
[46:53]yazid during her most painful moment but bringing him down to size
[46:56]knowing that this is something that's going to affect him nonetheless the
[47:01]unpleasant circumstances have made me speak to you this is zanab talking
[47:05]to yazid while I consider your status to be quite low and
[47:13]your reproach to be quite large as also I consider uh scoffing
[47:15]at you abundant abundantly meaning I you know if I had the
[47:24]opportunity I would essentially mock you for you know you think you
[47:29]have this uh huge Palace but you have a feeble Army you
[47:31]have a wicked Palace all of this is just a deception and
[47:36]is completely meaningless essentially using words to bring him down to size
[47:41]and then she reminds ya she says Allah is not unjust to
[47:53]his servants I complain only to Allah and I rely on him
[47:55]alone here during her most difficult moments she's addressing yazid but she's
[48:00]also addressing all of us as Muslims in contemporary times during our
[48:07]difficult moments who are we complaining to are we complaining to individuals
[48:11]that can uh help us or are we reverting back to Allah
[48:15]subhah wa ta'ala you know many of us just like the sermon
[48:20]of fedc assume that the sermon is simply talking to Abu Bakr
[48:22]but in fact these are Divine and spiritual words that are directed
[48:26]towards the Muslims of all times not just during that time very
[48:31]similarly to the um of um of Z and and and then
[48:38]she concludes praise be to Allah who has who has brought or
[48:48]happiness upon us with forgiveness and she says and we ask Allah
[49:15]subhah Waal to um make us essentially dependent on him and and
[49:18]to make him the most excellent uh protector of us so you
[49:23]know to conclude here you know we started off by um reflecting
[49:26]on the um impact of Taylor Swift and we said that Taylor
[49:30]Swift is having a major impact on society today because her words
[49:37]are resonating with people on an emotional level and are allowing them
[49:42]to connect with her on an emotional level likewise fa and Z
[49:47]used words to connect to the people but the difference is although
[49:55]Taylor Swift has nearly a billion fans today and has people people
[49:58]that call themselves swifties she's been able to connect the words of
[50:02]Z and Fa have not been able to connect with with many
[50:08]of us Muslims and non-muslims and many of us will say well
[50:11]I'm a fan of Zab I'm a z or I'm a fa
[50:16]and the question becomes are we truly Zab and faam meaning if
[50:19]Z and were here today would they consider us as being among
[50:28]their followers or would they consider us to be like the men
[50:31]of the ansar during the time of the Prophet who when uh
[50:36]push came to S shove and they needed their support all of
[50:39]them turned away and didn't stand in the way of justice and
[50:42]stand up against Injustice and and Allah subhah wa tala and you
[50:48]know the best example of this is what would zanab say today
[50:50]in the um in in our response to um injustices that are
[50:55]happening all over the world today so the Injustice that's happening in
[50:59]Gaza where we know according to the New York Times that according
[51:03]to the New York Times one woman dies every two hours in
[51:07]Gaza this is according to the New York Times according to the
[51:12]United Nations there are 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza approximately 180 are
[51:20]giving birth every day so today 180 women gave birth to children
[51:25]in the land of Gaza and where are the zabies where are
[51:31]the FIS what are we uh doing in terms of supporting these
[51:35]communities is the most dangerous place in the world to be a
[51:40]woman or a girl right now according to the uh New York
[51:42]Times the number of women and girls being senselessly killed in this
[51:46]violence Rises by the hour and again the question becomes where are
[51:53]the zabis where are the Hussein and so to uh conclude you
[51:56]know the um words of Taylor Swift are transient and temporary and
[52:01]they cannot be compared to the words of FAA and Z Allah
[52:06]subhana tells us this in in the Quran says a good word
[52:19]is like a good tree it has a strong root and its
[52:24]uh uh and its branches grow to the uh sky and and
[52:27]Allah subhana wa T goes on to say it's always giving of
[52:39]its fruit the words of and are like the good uh tree
[52:46]they have a strong foundation and they've existed with us for over
[52:50]1,400 years and they're bearing fruit for all of us on a
[52:55]daily basis but we as Muslims are not picking from those fruits
[52:57]we ignore those fruit we let the fruit fall on the ground
[53:01]and don't benefit from the fruits of those good words by by
[53:12]contrast and a weak word is like a weak tree it has
[53:17]a very uh wobbly foundation and it's not and it's h you
[53:22]know on the edge of of defeat so many of us have
[53:24]ignored the good words of father and and have chosen the temporary
[53:34]words of um of others such as the um uh such as
[53:35]what I mentioned at the uh beginning so we ask Allah subhana
[53:41]wa ta'ala to enable us to become true fa and z and
[53:46]to respond to the call of Allah subhana T you know this
[53:48]Ayah that I mentioned at the beginning the words of the prophet
[53:59]the words of the words of are words that are meant to
[54:06]give us life Allah here is talking to the Believers and recognize
[54:20]that Allah subana waala has placed the prophet between you and your
[54:25]um and your um Souls uh and that uh to to Allah
[54:30]subhana wa tala you ultimately return so we ask Allah subhana wa
[54:33]ta'ala to make us among the faam and the zabies and to
[54:37]listen to their words and to their words that give life and
[54:39]it's interesting you know even today with respect to Gaza you know
[54:45]the uh biggest supporters of in modern times just like during the
[54:50]time of fa were the women like um a and Asma they
[54:54]were the ones who were witnesses to fa the witnesses to the
[54:57]injustices that are happening in razza today the majority of them are
[55:04]women so we have individuals in Congress such as Rashid or this
[55:08]uh individual Corey Bush who just recently got voted out of office
[55:11]for speaking against Gaza or you have individuals like media Benjamin a
[55:16]woman of Jewish origin who has gone and been arrested multiple times
[55:22]for protesting in Congress these are the individuals that are uh bearing
[55:29]witness to um the injustices of um of Gaz and we would
[55:31]call them zabis and FIS now I want to take you to
[55:36]the land of as on this uh day because we're commemorating U
[55:41]but obviously would not be in existence without the words of Z
[55:46]and I want you to think and reflect on the pain and
[55:51]and sorrow that zanab was uh experiencing on that day of ashur
[55:57]on that day of Ash the world seemed to hold its breath
[56:00]as if the very heavens wept for what was to come zi
[56:06]stood on the desolate Plains of carbal her heart already shattered knowing
[56:11]that the day would end in unimaginable tragedy the morning sun rising
[56:16]over the horizon did not bring hope or warmth it was a
[56:22]harsh merciless light that illuminated the impending doom of everything she held
[56:24]dear the camp was was quiet as the men prepared themselves each
[56:30]one aware that they were stepping into the jaws of death zanab
[56:34]moved among them her face pale and drawn her eyes Hollow with
[56:38]grief she embraced her brother Hussein for what she knew would be
[56:45]the last time her fingers trembling as they touched his face memorizing
[56:49]every line every feature there was so much she wanted to say
[56:53]but the words stuck in her throat choked by the knowledge that
[56:58]this was their final farewell this is the last time that zanab
[57:02]was talking to her brother Imam Hussein her heartbroken new as she
[57:07]watched her sons Muhammad bid her goodbye they were so young barely
[57:12]out of childhood yet their faces were set with the determination to
[57:17]fight fight alongside their Uncle zab's hands lingered on their heads trying
[57:22]to hold on to them for just a moment longer but she
[57:27]knew she had to let them go they left her side their
[57:29]small figures disappearing into the ranks of men and zanab felt as
[57:32]though her very Soul was being torn from her body as the
[57:36]battle began the air filled with the sound of swords and the
[57:39]cries of the Wounded zanab stood on the edge of the battlefield
[57:46]her heart racing with fear and dread her eyes fixed on the
[57:49]figure of Hussein who stood tall among among the chaos a beacon
[57:55]of light in the sea of Darkness she saw her loved ones
[57:58]ride into battle one by one their faces set with resolve and
[58:03]but one by one she saw them fail and fall the first
[58:05]to break her heart were her sons an and Muhammad so brave
[58:10]so full of life fell to the enemy's swords zab's World Clum
[58:13]crumbled as she watched their small bodies hit the ground the light
[58:19]in their eyes extinguished forever she wanted to scream to run to
[58:23]them to cradle them in her arms but she could not move
[58:28]she could not breathe her legs gave way beneath her and she
[58:31]collapsed to the ground her hands claing at the Earth her voice
[58:34]lost in the Roar of the battle and then it was Abbas
[58:38]her brother her protector the one who has always been by her
[58:41]side she saw him struggle to reach the river his only thought
[58:46]to bring water to the Thirsty children but the enemy cut him
[58:49]down severing his arm his lifeless body falling into the dust zab's
[58:53]Vision blurred with tears as she watched him for all knowing that
[58:59]with him a piece of her heart had died but the most
[59:02]excruciating moment came when she saw Hussein her beloved brother surrounded by
[59:07]enemies his body already battered by wounds yet still standing still refusing
[59:12]to surrender zab's breath caught in her throat as she watched him
[59:15]fight every moment a testament to his unbreakable Spirit but she knew
[59:21]it was only a matter of time she knew that death was
[59:23]closing in on him that she would lose soon lose the L
[59:28]of her family zab's heart shattered into a thousand pieces she had
[59:33]lost everything her brothers her son her family uh the pain was
[59:36]too much to bear a weight so heavy that it threatened to
[59:42]crush her completely she wanted to die to be with them to
[59:45]escape the unbearable Agony she was left to live to endure the
[59:50]endless torment of a heart that had been ripped apart as night
[59:53]fell over carbal zanab sat besides the bodies of her loved ones
[59:57]her heart aching with a grief that would never fade the darkness
[60:01]of the night mirrored the darkness in her soul a darkness that
[60:05]would never lift the stars in the sky seemed distant cold uncaring
[60:09]and zanam knew that her life would never again know light never
[60:14]again no peace the day of ashur had ended but for zanab
[60:17]the pain the nightmare had only begun let us conclude this Magus
[60:25]by reciting fat for all of the oran organizers and for all
[60:27]of the and for all of the and that have passed away
[60:31]but before we do that let us recite five times uh this
[60:36]is a beautiful Ayah to help heal all of those that are
[60:38]sick all of those that are suffering both in this community and
[60:44]across the world let us recite so Allah subhana waala can alleviate
[60:48]their pain and suffering [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] say [Music] let us
[61:31]recite after a loud salaat [Music]
