[0:20]dear brothers and sisters um i'd like to welcome you to um
[0:25]our program tonight inshallah we'll start the program as usual with the
[0:32]recitation from the holy quran i would say muhammad we welcome we
[0:36]welcome him with love salaat salaam a [Music] um foreign [Music] m
[2:34]foreign [Music] on m my foreign foreign foreign our next speaker inshallah
[5:01]uh brother dr asaf al-ani with the talk about back pain causes
[5:08]and treatments we welcome him with brothers and sisters um my presentation
[5:17]today is going to be a small talk um regarding um back
[5:23]pain um it's causes and simple treatments we can employ at home
[5:27]to help and when to think about going to rgp now we'll
[5:33]start by a little bit about spinal anatomy and what the spine
[5:36]consists of the spine consists of seven cervical vertebrae 12 thoracics and
[5:45]five lumbar so the lower back pain is where the lumbar vertebrae
[5:52]are the vertebrae are the bones of this um lower spine and
[5:54]between each and every vertebrae but there is a small disc and
[5:58]we've got two joints at the back um in the middle of
[6:03]the spinal column there's the spinal cord and the nerve roots in
[6:09]the lumbar area now the vast majority of of spinal pain actually
[6:17]comes from either the joint around at the back all due to
[6:24]muscular weakness that's enabled to carry the weight of the spine effectively
[6:28]or straighten the spine that much um the the the pain if
[6:34]it's mainly in the back itself and does not radiate or goes
[6:36]all the way down to the foot then the pain is called
[6:41]mechanical back pain um by and large if you've got back pain
[6:45]that doesn't go anywhere else then this is a benign pain or
[6:50]a simple pain as we call it in in the spine world
[6:56]um now this pain responds favorably to simple analgesics like paracetamol and
[7:02]ibuprofen and responds very very well to exercises so um if you
[7:09]have an only isolated back pain um does not go to anywhere
[7:17]else your urination and defecation is normal and you don't have numbness
[7:20]around your genitals then the back pain is a largely benign back
[7:29]pain this can be helped by you exercising working on your core
[7:37]muscles and keeping your back supple weight reduction is quite important if
[7:41]you're on the heavier side rather than the lighter side then losing
[7:46]weight is always advisable because it helps quite a lot with the
[7:52]back pain now as we grow older and become more mature then
[7:57]the joints at the back also known as the facet joints um
[8:02]can become arthritic so you can have arthritis in these joints and
[8:07]there are multiple modalities that can help including the ones i spoke
[8:13]about earlier but if this is not helping and you're still in
[8:15]agony despite doing all this then you can go to your gp
[8:20]who will prescribe you some medications or refer you to the pain
[8:23]team where the pain team can see you and even can suggest
[8:27]burning the nerve endings around those joints at the back that have
[8:31]become arthritic there's no operation in the world that can help very
[8:35]much with the back pain so it's not a pain that we
[8:39]would consider surgical intervention for now there are pains that start in
[8:43]the back but go to the leg for example and these are
[8:48]the pains that can be helped by the spinal surgeons so there
[8:52]are multiple reasons for these pains some are related to disc problems
[8:58]others are related to slippage of the spine so you have a
[9:02]little break at the back not related to a fall necessarily and
[9:07]the spine slips one vertebra slips on the other and as this
[9:12]happens this can cause compression in the spinal canal or compression on
[9:16]the exiting nerves from the spine now that that's these are benign
[9:23]reasons um now god forbid um some reasons are not as benign
[9:28]so there can be tumors for example that can have compression um
[9:32]on the um of the spinal canal and compress the nerve roots
[9:38]and these are usually associated by either a history of cancer or
[9:42]losing weight or losing our appetite or having night sweats so all
[9:48]these symptoms i i'm telling you about the night sweats the history
[9:52]of cancer the losing appetite the um the um not being able
[9:58]to gain weight or lose weight in addition um to any symptoms
[10:03]of losing control over bowel or bladder all these are mainly the
[10:09]symptoms that we worry about we call it the red flags if
[10:12]you develop any of these symptoms with even simple back pain then
[10:16]you need to go straight to your gp to be referred as
[10:21]an emergency to accident and emergency department now please do keep in
[10:25]mind these symptoms are quite important and you need to make sure
[10:31]that if you have back pain you're not having any of these
[10:34]symptoms now leg pain in itself can be related to all of
[10:36]the problems i told you about um including the disc prolapse or
[10:41]the disc bulge or the compression of the spine um the central
[10:47]canal or the nerve roots by any of the means i told
[10:53]you about now if it's only because of a disc then looking
[10:55]at the comparative studies that we've done or the rap demise control
[10:59]trials um looking at both patients patients that have had physiotherapy uh
[11:05]for 18 months and patients that had surgery we found out that
[11:10]the outcome at 18 months for patients that have had operation and
[11:14]patients that did not have operation only physiotherapy very active physiotherapy and
[11:21]analgesics the outcome for these two groups was exactly the same the
[11:26]only difference was the speed at which we achieved pain relief so
[11:30]if someone is working and wants to go straight back to work
[11:34]and he's got a very big disc causing him severe pain then
[11:38]we can consider interventions the interventions obviously in the spinal world start
[11:44]with the simplest physiotherapy and analgesics then if this does not work
[11:49]then we can consider spinal injections an injection by which we deposit
[11:52]a local anesthetic and steroids around the nerve root and this will
[11:57]help decrease the inflammation um and sometimes the body absorbs the disc
[12:01]on its own and while the body is doing this the injection
[12:05]will help in the healing process and decreasing the inflammation and that's
[12:09]all that the patient needs now if the the injection helps and
[12:12]the patient is fully recovered we're very happy usually and we send
[12:16]them on their way now if the injection helps and then the
[12:18]pain comes back then we can consider surgical intervention in which we
[12:24]remove the prolapsed disc or the disc that has come out um
[12:27]with regards to spinal prolapse or the spinal slippage itself which we
[12:31]call spondylolisthesis a very big word for spinal slippage um there are
[12:37]multiple options you can decompress the spine at the back and stabilize
[12:40]it i.e put some screws and rods but we start again with
[12:44]the simplest because even with spinal slippage um physiotherapy and analgesia can
[12:49]help with the vast majority of cases if this which is very
[12:53]bad then we can proceed with injections and maybe to surgical intervention
[12:57]um afterwards um now some patients have something called sacral eye leg
[13:04]pain pain at the lower end of the back between the buttock
[13:07]and the spine itself usually happens in female patients after giving birth
[13:13]or the last trimester of pregnancy and the last time is through
[13:17]a pregnancy a hormone is released called the relaxin hormone and this
[13:21]relaxes the joints in that area and by and large the vast
[13:24]majority of the population the the joints return back to normal but
[13:28]some of them don't and as such they suffer from sacroiliitis or
[13:33]inflammation around that joint and it's specific between the buttock area and
[13:38]the spine area in that specific joint and obviously if the patient
[13:44]has got a lot of pain there then we can consider either
[13:47]injecting them if they come and get referred to us or even
[13:50]in the severe cases consider surgical intervention now this is with regards
[13:57]to the to the spine and the lower back with the pain
[14:00]itself now you have to understand that the vast majority of back
[14:06]pain does not need surgical intervention or even the referral to the
[14:09]spinal surgeons the vast majority with physiotherapy and keeping active having analgesia
[14:15]or painkillers as well as losing weight the vast majority improve with
[14:20]time even with the discs as i've shown you in the comparative
[14:22]studies that we've done now there are other entities that can cause
[14:25]back pain like scoliosis which is curve abnormal curvature of the spine
[14:30]and some of these cases do need indeed referral sooner rather than
[14:35]later to us and to discuss options which might include surgical intervention
[14:39]and again the correction surgery for any scoliosis will and might improve
[14:46]the back pain but it's mainly is a lifestyle operation in which
[14:51]we correct the curvature of the spine rather than addressing the back
[14:57]pain itself some of the patients say that even if we correct
[15:00]the curvature of the spine the back pain does not change or
[15:02]in some cases even becomes worse now one last thing i would
[15:08]like to draw the attention to is that if any of the
[15:13]patients that have low back pain have weight loss have history of
[15:22]cancer have night sweats or loss of appetite with their back pain
[15:25]or the back and leg pain they need to go to their
[15:29]gp immediately to be investigated if any of the patients develop numbness
[15:34]around the genital areas or loss of control of a bowel or
[15:40]bladder i.e we or poo then they need to go immediately either
[15:43]to their gp or to accident and emergency because this is an
[15:48]emergency and it's time related if the patients are not picked up
[15:51]within 48 hours of losing the bowel or bladder control then the
[15:56]dye is cast and we cannot even help them so 48 hours
[16:01]is very important so as soon as someone notices this they need
[16:04]to go to accident and emergency immediately thank you ever so much
[16:09]and may you all stay healthy thank you so much uh dr
[16:20]assaf for the for the talk allah reward for your effort and
[16:23]i'm sure it's a topic that many of us within the community
[16:28]found useful thank you thank you very much thank you thank you
[16:30]very much um our next speaker tonight inshallah our next guest is
[16:36]dr hassan with the talk about um titled habits making and breaking
[16:43]we welcome him with love salaat salaam urgent in emergency care i'm
[17:05]also i'm building on the topic from last week talking about the
[17:09]practical challenges of ramadan and picking one particular thing really to energize
[17:14]ourselves all today insha'allah which is habits um now i'm my approach
[17:19]is going to be a no-nonsense approach i will be quite direct
[17:22]and hopefully motivational as well and if anybody is impacted by this
[17:30]talk i really encourage you to seek advice from friends family relatives
[17:35]or indeed get in touch with representatives of islamic center for any
[17:40]further advice so habits what are habits they are something we do
[17:46]repeatedly there are patterns of behavior it's an activity or practice that
[17:48]potentially we fall into regularly sometimes these habits can be some something
[17:54]that's quite hard for us to give up we all have habits
[17:58]and some of these um habits can be quite benign innocent and
[18:03]can be practically quite good so habits keep us from reinventing the
[18:06]wheel of our daily lives by us making an infinite number of
[18:10]decisions all day long which actually just gives us some headspace to
[18:15]think about other things so sometimes these habits we do subconsciously we
[18:18]don't really think about them caveat that can be quite dangerous and
[18:22]hence this talk today but what if we have learned and adopted
[18:26]bad habits over our lifetime that continues to be a part of
[18:31]our routine today when can these habits become harmful for us bad
[18:37]habits can be thought of in different ways it can take the
[18:41]form of internal thoughts things that you think of nobody else knows
[18:44]about this this is something inside you for instance taking things personally
[18:49]holding on to the past over stressing all the time fueling drama
[18:54]have you ever sat with somebody and you're just talking about something
[18:57]that's happened and suddenly they've just escalated it out of control overthinking
[19:02]complaining all the time about everything or negative thinking these are all
[19:08]things which we can internalize which can potentially bring harm to ourselves
[19:11]our health our self-esteem our confidence or we could potentially externalize them
[19:18]and that can then bring harm to other people close people to
[19:22]us around us bad habits can take the form of lifestyle routines
[19:26]something that we actually incorporates part of our lifestyle for instance eating
[19:32]badly or overeating or always keeping away from exercise making it the
[19:36]last thing that we ever think about doing sleeping very late or
[19:39]sleeping too little over sleeping in the mornings uh we'll probably have
[19:45]some uh some some of some youth in the community here i
[19:47]mean this is something that um we find as parents we're having
[19:52]to wake up our kids early in the morning and we find
[19:55]they tend to over sleep this can be an issue these things
[19:58]again can affect our health they can affect our productivity during the
[20:02]day our sense of self-confidence and again our self-esteem how we thought
[20:08]ourselves how we feel about ourselves finally habits can take the worst
[20:14]form for us as a muslim a form that not only affects
[20:18]us in this life but also in our next life habitual lying
[20:21]cheating stealing gambling things like sexual self pleasure or other deviances drugs
[20:27]and alcohol for instance these are habits that can potentially ruin our
[20:30]lives not in just not just in this world but also the
[20:35]next when you choose your behavior you are also choosing your own
[20:41]consequences you are free to make whatever choices you want but you
[20:44]are not free from the consequences of those choices and if you
[20:47]want to know your future you need to reflect carefully and look
[20:51]at what you are doing at this moment with your life so
[20:55]if you have bad habits you want to break it is important
[20:59]that you start now start early you may have been adopting bad
[21:02]habits for many years and they can become quite hard to break
[21:07]because by now they've become deeply wired by repetition in our brains
[21:10]and then if you add pleasure to those habits the pleasure centers
[21:15]of our midbrain can also get involved and this is where it
[21:18]gets quite difficult because we start talking about chemicals neurotransmitters things like
[21:20]dopamine it is vitally important then that we don't let these bad
[21:28]habits run our lives we say ruin but make sure that they
[21:30]don't actually overcome us and run our lives of course these habits
[21:34]have all started somewhere and for some reason in our past a
[21:38]trigger for instance and we live in a world that is more
[21:40]challenging than any other time with the social pressures of the modern
[21:46]world around us some of the habits that we have issues with
[21:48]for instance are normalized in the western world and in fact encouraged
[21:53]the first step is to stop and you might think well is
[21:56]that the end of this lecture have we gone right to the
[22:00]end and missed everything between no the first step is to stop
[22:04]and by stopping i mean stop and think stop and reflect stop
[22:08]in time what are the things i do on a regular basis
[22:12]that pulls me back from my full potential are these things that
[22:16]i get up to regularly that have become a habit that could
[22:19]be harming my health my success my relationship with allah so the
[22:25]first step is to acknowledge your current actions and take responsibility for
[22:30]them you are responsible for those actions after all you cannot change
[22:34]what you do not acknowledge then you need to reason with yourself
[22:39]why is it what i'm why is what i'm doing harmful to
[22:43]me what is likely to happen to me if i continue to
[22:50]do this this particular habit if you are failing repeatedly to stop
[22:53]a bad habit despite trying different things then there are likely to
[22:56]be two areas where potentially you are weakened either your understanding or
[23:00]acknowledgement or your belief in the reason that what you are doing
[23:05]is wrong or harmful that you you you just don't think it's
[23:08]wrong you might say to people this is wrong but you don't
[23:11]believe it's wrong yourself or because of your willingness to change one
[23:15]of the biggest weapons one can have is willingness the willpower to
[23:19]change those listening to this may find inshallah that you are free
[23:24]from any bad habits at all in which case help others support
[23:27]others parents help your children brothers supporting their sisters and vice versa
[23:32]friends supporting friends they say a problem shared is a problem hard
[23:37]but for some the journey can be really quite tough but for
[23:43]those on the journey the only impossible journey is the one you
[23:46]never begin so how do we begin this journey the first thing
[23:51]is that we need to define the behavior that you want to
[23:53]change what is it that you are experiencing that you definitely want
[23:58]to change something that's been bothering you for years potentially understand why
[24:03]you want to cut this out of your life why you want
[24:05]to cut out this habit and here i'm focusing more on the
[24:08]extreme end of the spectrum those harmful habits that we tend to
[24:12]adopt understand why you form this habit in the first place go
[24:15]back to the beginning where did this begin what happened in your
[24:19]life at that time and how has it become part of your
[24:22]routine the next thing is need to identify the triggers all habits
[24:28]have a trigger that leads directly to it that situation you find
[24:32]yourself in that each time you meet the same situation it leads
[24:36]you to get into that habit for instance sitting down to watch
[24:41]tv we just learned uh quite substantially about back pain uh very
[24:46]very uh eloquently and uh uh uh completely by dr assaf al-ani
[24:52]the fact that back pain actually can cause quite a lot of
[24:56]damage and actually prevention is better than cure so it's time to
[24:59]watch television when i sit down i i'm going to admit that
[25:02]i have a bad habit and that i slouch when i sit
[25:05]down in front of the television i'm always slouching it'll take me
[25:07]maybe two hours before i realize i'm like this to suddenly sit
[25:10]up now over years of doing this again and again we end
[25:14]up with problems that potentially have quite significant treatment that's required actually
[25:20]that we can avoid in the first place so these triggers it
[25:23]can be a place it can be a time a time of
[25:27]the day or it can be a person that you meet or
[25:29]that you know or a thought or an emotion like stress by
[25:32]identifying your triggers you have a way then of pushing back and
[25:36]not having that autopilot kicking in where where these triggers are thoughts
[25:40]or emotions you need to use your awareness of these triggers and
[25:47]intercept them intercept them before they overcome you at this point you
[25:50]may intentionally do something else so a thought comes to your mind
[25:54]or in a situation change yourself intentionally do something else at that
[25:59]point in time to take yourself away and divert yourself either through
[26:02]thought or emotion even where you are physically going to a different
[26:07]place if you're inside going outside for instance an activity to break
[26:11]that chain in connection between the original thought and the bad habit
[26:14]that you know usually follows if this is not possible then other
[26:17]measures can be adopted like deep breathing and meditation know yourself well
[26:23]enough to avoid the people the places and the things that take
[26:27]you back to the habits that you worked so hard to break
[26:29]the next thing develop a substitute plan figure out some activity that
[26:35]gives you the same benefit as that habit you want to get
[26:37]rid of but that is not bad for you sometimes breaking a
[26:40]habit is not necessarily about stopping it but swapping it for something
[26:45]else an example could be the school playground so when i was
[26:48]at school i knew that during break times if i was to
[26:50]sit with a certain group of kids or classmates i would be
[26:53]drawn into laughing and joking about all sorts of rubbish even discussing
[26:58]topics that fuel ourselves and senses of negative or illicit thoughts that
[27:02]may later over time build up and become engraved images or thought
[27:06]tendencies in our mind for those of us youngsters at school or
[27:10]college it is therefore very important for us to choose our companions
[27:14]and company wisely think about who you spend your time with if
[27:18]you have a habit for example of overeating at dinner time add
[27:21]a step immediately before you start eating by drinking lots of water
[27:24]you'll soon find you'll have less capacity to eat the same amount
[27:27]following this that's a diet tip if it's computers and mobile phones
[27:32]for instance with social media or games that trigger certain habits in
[27:35]the evening such as sleeping very late switching off the phone or
[27:39]unplug electrical devices instead do some reading in the last hour or
[27:43]two before bedtime the key thing here is to map out before
[27:46]these triggers what's going on and give yourself a chance for this
[27:50]substitute plan to kick in next you exercise your willpower now to
[27:57]do this as an exercise i'd like you all to give this
[28:01]a go think of a smaller less significant habit something that's really
[28:04]trivial and say no on a regular basis for at least a
[28:09]month some people will say 21 days is a magic number so
[28:13]saying no to a certain thing and we're going to be really
[28:17]silly here things like fizzy drinks or crisps and chocolate say no
[28:19]to them on a regular basis for example for a month this
[28:24]can add to your sense of empowerment the positivity within you the
[28:29]fact that yes i can i can do this i can overcome
[28:31]i'm proving to myself i can say no to myself next use
[28:35]prompts these are active reminders to help you break the pattern by
[28:38]creating positive triggers and alerts to help keep you on track you
[28:43]can also consider downloading an app on your phone that you can
[28:47]use to track the progress and keep a diary about your habits
[28:49]you can add comments about what did and didn't work well for
[28:53]the next time you face a negative trigger then you need to
[28:59]be persistent and patient it is quite normal at some point in
[29:01]your efforts to break as you try to break back a bad
[29:06]habit as you go that you may slip and you may fall
[29:10]back into that bad habit you may even go well why am
[29:14]i bothering to struggle with this you begin to feel discouraged you
[29:17]feel you are emotionally making your life a nightmare harder and that
[29:21]there is very little payoff this is especially true when you are
[29:24]struggling alone with no support if you fail and eventually slip back
[29:29]into your bad habit which is always possible don't decrease your goal
[29:34]instead you must increase your effort remember that life for us is
[29:39]a trial with many struggles but every time we fall we must
[29:43]get back up and be stronger a far eastern philosopher once said
[29:48]a gem or a diamond cannot be polished without friction nor man
[29:52]perfected without trials and that's why we have trials the trials are
[29:58]here to teach us and to make us better the struggle against
[30:02]ourselves the jihadis a man who conquers himself is greater than one
[30:06]who conquers a thousand men in battle we all have time to
[30:11]spend or waste and it is our decision what to do with
[30:15]it but once this time has passed it has gone forever so
[30:18]on this journey we must choose courage over comfort choose what is
[30:22]right over what is fun fast or easy and choose to practice
[30:27]our islamic values rather than just simply professing them we have the
[30:31]month of ramadan ahead of us insha'allah i would like you all
[30:35]to focus on one habit just one remember do one at a
[30:38]time not ten at a time you're bound to fail think about
[30:41]it reflect on it in all the things i've just said and
[30:44]make it your goal that you're in ramadan you are going to
[30:49]conquer this bad habit and it can be anything you can't go
[30:53]back and change the beginning but you can start now where you
[30:57]are and change the ending i wish all my brothers and sisters
[31:04]are ramadan mubarak and inshallah we will all develop good habits during
[31:22]the month of ramadan and you know even after thank you so
[31:28]much our next speaker um with a slight change to the program
[31:38]uh said ali with a talk about the holy month of ramadan
[31:44]the foreign is a virtue that must present to every believing man
[32:58]and every believing woman every religion especially the abrahamic faiths emphasizes that
[33:05]those who adhere to the religion those who adhere to the abrahamic
[33:11]faiths beautify themselves with the quality of patience and allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala
[33:17]has appointed 124 000 prophets and tested every single one of them
[33:25]they all left a legacy of patience behind them however the word
[33:31]saab and patience is mentioned in the holy quran over 94 times
[33:36]therefore every page in the holy quran points directly or indirectly on
[33:44]the principle of patience and ramadan my brothers and sisters is a
[33:48]mind that teaches us how to exercise patience because in this month
[33:56]we must avoid even the halal things so that we can avoid
[33:59]and ignore the haram things after this month but we can divide
[34:07]patients into three types of those who got inflicted by a misery
[34:45]they would say to allah we belong and to allah we shall
[34:49]return number two is patience and obedience allah subhanahu wa ta'ala also
[34:57]states [Music] and we made them imams and leaders to guide by
[35:08]our command when they were patient and number three is patience and
[35:14]disobedience foreign and as for the one who fails to stand in
[35:33]the presence of his lord and forbids the soul from the desires
[35:36]his refuge will indeed be heaven and saab in the hadith and
[35:48]narrations is described as the head similar patience to faith is like
[36:03]the head to the body and imagine can a body function without
[36:07]the head the faith also cannot function without patience so if there's
[36:13]no patience there will be no faith as well the prophet sallallahu
[36:22]alaihi wasallam in a hadith mentions three signs for the patient number
[36:54]one he does not become weak because weakness causes the truth to
[37:01]be lost and to lose the rights of the others number two
[37:05]he does not become depressed because depression prevents one from being thankful
[37:11]and number three he does not complain to allah subhanahu wa allah
[37:16]because complaining to allah equals with committing sins and the reality is
[37:23]whether it's in this world or the next world the final result
[37:29]of patience is very sweet and peaceful so people who fail to
[37:37]show patience get caught in many problems and difficulties in their lives
[37:42]therefore it's very important to exercise our patients and to increase it
[37:49]and indeed one of the most important ways to exercise our patience
[37:53]and to increase our patience is believing in allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[37:59]and having a constant relationship with him and seek help through patience
[38:15]and prayer and indeed it's a very hard thing except for humble
[38:22]ones and patience and suffer here is defined as fasting so seeking
[38:27]help from allah subhanahu wa ta'ala through fasting and praying helps us
[38:34]to increase our patience success to become true patient during the month
[39:07]of ramadan and throughout the whole year inshallah dear brothers and sisters
[39:11]while we wait inshaallah for brother ali shkara to join um actually

[41:07]in due course inshallah but for future programs if there's anything in
[41:12]particular that you would like um you know to be covered or
[41:20]maybe some suggestions or any feedback uh that will be greatly appreciated
[41:25]so while saying ali can can you hear us now ah yes
[41:35]i'm so sorry uh can you guys see me yes yes we
[41:40]can yes love we we we we welcome say the ali would
[41:48]love salaat allah [Music] genuine apologies for the delay in all the
[42:12]technicalities i was in the middle of something and i took a
[42:15]lot longer than i thought and so here i am but i'm
[42:18]not too late so i don't want to take up too much
[42:21]everybody's time i wanted to share just some thoughts on a central
[42:26]theme in in our deen and that is the heart there is
[42:34]a famous hadith where allah says that the heart is the throne
[42:46]of the al of the all-merciful and for those who are not
[42:51]familiar the hadith is the word is hadith spoken by the prophet
[42:55]through the word through the mouth the prophet but they are the
[42:58]words of god so the heart is the throne of the all
[43:03]merciful and the heart is also for as scholars teach us it
[43:12]is the bridge between heaven and earth and it is that which
[43:17]that that by which we can connect with allah the heart can
[43:24]be stained and it can be enlightened so um the quranic verse
[43:32]says that rust has gathered around the hearts of people by their
[43:38]actions by the things that they have done so our means to
[43:43]be able to connect with allah is through the heart through intention
[43:47]through sincerity much of religion deals with rights deals with actions deals
[43:55]of how we engage with society and theology gives us an idea
[44:01]of gives us the right ideas the right and the wrong ideas
[44:03]about what islam is what tohit is what naboo is how do
[44:09]we how do you understand the cosmos how do we understand nature
[44:13]how do we understand ourselves theology are the the ideas behind all
[44:19]these factors but matt is pertaining to the heart are matters that
[44:25]are dealt with by the spiritual traditions of our religion and the
[44:32]heart is a sacred space within the human being it is that
[44:36]which is that aspect of human consciousness which allows us to directly
[44:41]connect with allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and as i said earlier it
[44:48]can be corroded it could be rust can develop around the heart
[44:51]but how can we find means to try and clear the heart
[44:56]so that we will be able to perceive the radiance of allah's
[44:58]parental it is through the dikkar through remembering god through using it
[45:06]through the asmr through to our through prayer through fasting all these
[45:14]practices all these sacred acts our means by which our hearts the
[45:21]rust within our hearts slowly fall out we polish our hearts and
[45:26]therefore become more perceptive to god's mercy which is blinding it surrounds
[45:33]us however it's not that god has no mercy as many secular
[45:38]minded people think it is that we humans us fallen human beings
[45:44]do not have the capacity to perceive the god's mercy god's infinite
[45:50]mercy so it's not that god is not there we do not
[45:53]have the capacity to perceive his mercy that is the challenge and
[45:58]what is the most what is the most direct way we can
[46:00]perceive and be receptive of this divine to be able to appreciate
[46:07]it is by polishing and purifying the heart i think i personally
[46:14]believe that it is vital every muslim not just every muslim any
[46:17]person of religion needs to be mindful of the ambience the environment
[46:23]that we find ourselves in we need to be aware of the
[46:28]right the truth and also what is false the errors and modernity
[46:32]uh a scholar i once heard a scholar say and he said
[46:36]i think this is a fantastic line it's worth everybody remembering this
[46:40]everything about modernity is geared to one thing not intentionally but this
[46:49]is the outcome it is the biggest distraction everything about medic modernity
[46:54]i don't mean whatever is contemporary i don't mean whatever is here
[46:58]and now because you can talk about contemporary as what was going
[47:03]on currently and modernity as in an uh an attitude to life
[47:06]certain philosophies that base that are the basis of the modern world
[47:12]secularism excessive rationalism where you think where you just the mental part
[47:18]of the human consciousness is the only part that tries to understand
[47:23]truth the heart the soul doesn't exist it's purely a sentimental emotional
[47:29]aspect to our today's world it has no meaning it has no
[47:36]real aspect to it so when you have excessive rationalism when you
[47:43]reduce all of existence to pure material means all these principles as
[47:49]i mentioned are the basis of the modern world and as a
[47:54]result it does everything to distract us from the real meaning of
[47:59]life what is life what is existence where did we come from
[48:01]where are we going everything we experience in this world the deep
[48:06]emotions the deep the hurt the joy all this is meaningless today's
[48:12]in today's world all of this is considered to be meaningless and
[48:17]or only the material aspects of existence are what's true and real
[48:24]but religion from the beginning has taught us the opposite that this
[48:29]material world is only one this is the smallest part of a
[48:33]much larger cosmos of a much larger much larger world of existence
[48:37]there are higher levels of reality and in our tradition in the
[48:41]islamic tradition we are constantly taught and told to be mindful of
[48:46]the heart to do thicker to pray to fast because this all
[48:55]these allow us to be more perceptive of god's mercy of god's
[48:59]greater existence and of our fallen nature so brothers and sisters as
[49:03]we enter slowly enter the month of ramadan i remind myself first
[49:08]and foremost and i sincerely encourage everybody to be mindful that when
[49:14]we do our practices in ramadan when we fast when we pray
[49:18]when we read when we think we should all be doing this
[49:23]orientating our minds and our efforts and our consciousness our sincerity our
[49:29]intention we should all orient this towards being closer to allah and
[49:35]by doing that our hearts will slowly the rust has corroded over
[49:39]our hearts the longer that we live in this dunya hot that
[49:44]rust will slowly start to be polished away so i sincerely hope
[49:50]and encourage everybody including first and foremost myself that we make the
[49:54]decker that we have the right intention and in the month of
[50:00]rahman this is the perfect opportunity for us to really enhance our
[50:03]practice our spiritual practices and as long as we do it sincerely
[50:09]this will be a step towards allah and allah will take 10
[50:12]steps towards us and we will be much more receptive and conscious
[50:15]of his rachma and our hearts will be cleaner i sincerely hope
[50:21]that that what i said was is meaningful and makes it uh
[50:24]give some food for thought for you uh thank you once again
[50:32]thank you so much that was uh that was really sort of
[50:37]really great in terms of uh you know increasing their spirituality insha'allah

[52:20]ability our special thanks goes to all our speakers who have taken
[52:26]the time to enlighten us with the with their talks and they've
[52:30]they've spent their time and and and effort um inshallah you find
