[0:00]Salam alaikum everyone when I'm at Allahabad a katsu I wish to
[0:07]congratulate the Muslim youth connection on their new beginning I wish to
[0:12]congratulate them on this wonderful wonderful event and for each and every
[0:16]one of you who's had your hand in this entire month working
[0:20]so hard God sure will reward you greatly so you know you
[0:24]hear me speak a lot so it's not like you can always
[0:28]come up with something fresh but I would like to start by
[0:31]telling you a story and of course our imam is going to
[0:37]follow so he'll steal the show the story is very important and
[0:41]I ask that you really listen carefully because in the story are
[0:48]some very very deep reflections it's the story of a man named
[0:52]Sam Sam was born a very beautiful baby like any other set
[1:00]of parents his parents were so happy to have such a gorgeous
[1:04]baby I've seen Sam's baby pictures his face was like a moon
[1:12]just shining ever ever so beautiful very very special looking baby like
[1:18]any other parent you raise your child and you expect all those
[1:24]exciting developmental moments except for this set of parents this baby wouldn't
[1:30]crawl and so the parents kept waiting and hoping that the baby
[1:36]would crawl thinking that it was just maybe a little too fat
[1:42]but the baby turned eight months old and still never crawled he
[1:47]began to scooped so the mother decided to take the baby of
[1:52]course to the pediatrician many times and the pediatrician said well it's
[1:59]just a slow baby but he will walk have faith he's fine
[2:02]one year goes by 13 14 15 months go by and the
[2:11]baby is still scooting not even crawling so finally mom takes the
[2:18]baby to a specialist called a neurologist and the neurologist says stop
[2:24]going everywhere around asking what can be done about your baby your
[2:29]baby will never walk well of course you can imagine what that
[2:33]feels like to a mother your baby will never walk however your
[2:41]baby may live as long as you care for your baby in
[2:49]this way keep your house clean and don't give your baby any
[2:53]special attention treat this child like you would any of your other
[2:56]children and this baby may live longer than you and so this
[3:03]very very brave mother heartbroken very brave father heartbroken takes their baby
[3:12]Sam home and begin the journey of raising this child the child
[3:17]happens to be very brilliant very very smart but can't do much
[3:23]for himself at all he has some function but not enough to
[3:27]live a normal daily life and of course school is starting so
[3:33]a wheelchair appears from what's called the muscular dystrophy association which is
[3:39]what he was diagnosed with and after that wheelchair he outgrew another
[3:46]wheelchair appeared and braces and all sorts of things and their house
[3:50]was full of something called a lift to take him from the
[3:53]bathroom to the bed and as he continued to grow into his
[4:00]teenage years like any other teenager he wanted to have a life
[4:03]too but wasn't given the opportunity to have the same kind of
[4:06]life many of you teenagers have in this room today now this
[4:13]gentleman is 60 plus years old he's the longest living person with
[4:19]muscular dystrophy of his kind in our country he's never walked a
[4:24]day in his life he's never moved a day in his life
[4:32]he's never been able to really feed himself the way you and
[4:35]I feed ourselves he's never been able to reach across the table
[4:39]and choose his food he has to depend on people to wake
[4:47]him in the morning to wipe his mouth to sit him up
[4:50]to get him his coffee to make sure he doesn't choke to
[4:57]move his hand just a bit this way that way his leg
[5:04]this way that way to lift him to put him on the
[5:06]toilet to wipe him to clean him to brush his teeth to
[5:13]shave his face to shampoo his hair to shower him he has
[5:19]to be dependent on all kinds of different people to get through
[5:24]not a day to get through minutes and through all of this
[5:29]this incredible human being managed to graduate with two college degrees and
[5:35]most recently maybe 6 or 7 months ago he had just a
[5:42]little bit of function left in this finger and I know many
[5:47]of you know who I'm talking about and he could do this
[5:51]that's it and this was enough to keep him in touch with
[6:01]the world through his computer he could communicate with a mouse that
[6:04]was very sensitive and he could type with that mouse so that
[6:10]he could send his emails he could communicate with the world and
[6:13]he can do the one sport that he could do not moving
[6:16]which was golf online and as you would have it at 60
[6:28]years old arthritis sets in and he loses this just this little
[6:32]bit of human function is gone his family was heartbroken but because
[6:40]of that failure something else popped up and it was a new
[6:49]contraption that came about a technology that allows your eyes to move
[6:55]a mouse so it was quite expensive but he advocated for himself
[7:01]and he managed to have the company send him one as an
[7:08]example it wasn't made for people like him it was made for
[7:16]people who had more function and movement but it came to the
[7:19]house and we put it on him and after a lot of
[7:27]adjustments he was able to use the pupil of his eye to
[7:30]move a mouse and with the pupil of his eye he can
[7:35]type you an email and with the pupil of his eye he
[7:40]can have Amazon speak to him with the pupil of his eye
[7:42]he can pay bills online with the people of his with the
[7:47]pupil of his eye he can watch what's happening here every single
[7:50]night and he has with a pupil of his eye that very
[7:56]slight movement he has his life back however limited we think that
[8:00]life maybe for him its quality of life and the reason I
[8:09]tell you this story is because we're very privileged people we move
[8:14]and we walk and we talk and we complain and we have
[8:21]a hard time letting go of things that were accustomed to and
[8:26]tonight is a night about letting go of things that we've been
[8:35]accustomed to and being brave enough to stand up and to continue
[8:39]to live our Islam as we should it doesn't matter who opens
[8:48]their doors or who closes them faces what matters is that we
[8:55]still have within us the ability to live our Aslam like Sam
[8:58]has the ability to live his life doors open and close every
[9:05]single day of our lives and failures happen every single day of
[9:09]our lives but if it wasn't for the failure of something if
[9:13]it wasn't for the challenge of something we would never find a
[9:20]new opportunity we would never find a new strength we would never
[9:23]find the gumption and the bravery that it takes to lift ourselves
[9:29]up from the bootstraps and make it happen again day in and
[9:32]day out this is an inspiration that I've been living with for
[9:36]all of my life he's my brother I actually took Sayyad say
[9:43]it not to the house and he was visiting and he came
[9:51]to see to see Sam and I showed him this I said
[9:52]look at this miracle just when we think we've lost everything something
[9:59]shows up so life is not about what we lose and it's
[10:07]not about crying over things that we feel so attached to it's
[10:12]about looking at the opportunity to live and the opportunity to serve
[10:19]and the opportunity that can be taken away from us so quickly
[10:24]when we're not aware of it my brother had jus Jo's father
[10:32]yesterday said something so profound to me and I said him can
[10:34]I use that he said you know you can't buy time you
[10:40]can buy everything but you can't buy time and that's true so
[10:44]we have to be busy today tomorrow for years ahead no matter
[10:50]where we are no matter who we are no matter who's on
[10:55]the bandwagon or not on the bandwagon what matters is are we
[10:58]moving forward because time is precious in every breath counts in one
[11:08]of these days breath will run out and when breath runs out
[11:12]there's no longer an opportunity to serve so I congratulate this audience
[11:19]for supporting not the youth actually it is a supporting Islam whether
[11:25]it's in youth or in adults for supporting a mission and a
[11:32]vision that has been in action for almost 20 years and God
[11:35]willing we'll continue to be in action and I would say to
[11:41]you serve wherever you can be good wherever you can and one
[11:46]principle that we have in medicine is to do good and to
[11:51]do no harm and if every day we wake up and we
[11:53]remember that today is our day to do good and to do
[11:58]no harm then on this particular day we are successful and the
[12:02]next day should only be better it's my honor always to serve
[12:08]the youth of this community I will continue God willing as long
[12:11]as God gives me breath to advocate for you no matter what
[12:16]building you are in I will be there for you and I
[12:20]know that you will do great things for Aslam in America and
[12:23]that's why I spent so much time investing in you because one
[12:27]day I will be gone and you will be those shining beacons
[12:32]of hope for all of us and that's something to be really
[12:39]proud of so I salute Sam today and I hope that you
[12:40]will salute Sam today and now I want you to remember when
[12:45]you're having a really rough day just think about that finger that
[12:48]no longer moves and think about that pupil that gave life back
[12:55]and thank God for what you have every single moment of the
[12:58]day thank him so now my life on
