[0:08]wa sallahu ala sayidina muhammadin wa ala nabina Tajin lama tsong muhammad
[0:16]washington previously we were examining multiple at Isola those acts that invalidate
[0:24]the prayer we mentioned six of them and now the seventh one
[0:29]that is on page 188 of the book which is an Arabic
[0:37]text will have the books available soon inshallah the seventh one the
[0:45]seventh act which invalidates the Salah is any act that goes against
[0:51]the essence of Salah as we mentioned in the previous class Salah
[1:01]is a spiritual connection that is to be maintained continuously anything that
[1:06]breaks that connection invalidates the Sunnah so when you stand and you
[1:13]pray and you're concentrating on Allah subhana WA Ta'ala any excessive act
[1:23]that could oppose this image of a person who is humble and
[1:29]praying would actually break the Sunnah scholars have given us examples but
[1:36]there isn't an excited exhaustive list of examples anything really that in
[1:42]the eyes of people it's considered to be interfering with the essence
[1:48]of prayer would actually break the Sunnah to give you a few
[1:56]examples walking let's say someone is praying and they need walk from
[1:59]this room they go into another room that breaks the connection of
[2:03]Sunnah even if they're concentrating on the words and their praying but
[2:08]the Sunnah has a physical form to it too that's the beauty
[2:12]of Islam is axé they have an essence which is spiritual but
[2:16]they also have a form the four must also be beautiful and
[2:23]proper when you walk around from one room to another room you
[2:26]change your you know you shift your face you're breaking that physical
[2:30]continuity of Sunnah hence if you walk too much you take too
[2:39]many steps you're so that becomes invalid but if you take only
[2:42]some short steps I'll give you some common examples let's say you're
[2:45]praying in a smaller room and you're praying in the middle of
[2:50]the room and then someone like let's say your wife your sisters
[2:54]someone your mother wants to join you and prayer or she also
[2:56]wants to pray now the woman has to pray slightly behind the
[3:02]man if they're in one small room right as we discussed last
[3:05]year the requirements of that they cannot pray right next to each
[3:11]other so let's say you just have to take a couple of
[3:13]steps like half a yard you go to the front so you
[3:17]make room for others to pray behind you does that invalidate the
[3:20]Salah no because these are some minor steps it does not break
[3:28]that physical continuity of Salah if you take a couple of steps
[3:31]to the right a couple of steps to the left if you
[3:36]drop something and it's very important for you to take it you
[3:39]know you're slightly kneel and you take something that's fine you can
[3:46]do that it does not invalidate the Salah in fact there are
[3:49]hadith and Sonia sources and in shia sources that sometimes the prophet
[3:54]sallallaahu anyone who would offer the highest form of salah there would
[3:59]be a child who's crying in front of him the prophet sallallaahu
[4:05]added to show that compassion to comfort the child and so the
[4:08]child does not also disturb the people who are praying he would
[4:11]actually carry the child while praying while offering his Rajab Salah he
[4:15]would carry the child see it's not an excessive act it's just
[4:21]a quick act where the child is right by you you just
[4:22]pick up the child that does not invalidate the Sunnah other examples
[4:28]let's say there is something around you that could pose harm to
[4:32]you like we have with the prophet sallallaahu anybody and the Imams
[4:36]of elevates a snake or a scorpion you know in the deserts
[4:41]of Arabia scorpions were everywhere it's very common for you to be
[4:45]praying and there's a scorpion coming at your way so now if
[4:47]you're praying and the scorpion is coming at your way if there
[4:53]is something around you and usually it's much to have to keep
[4:55]like a steak something around you if if that is a possibility
[5:00]you take the stick and you push off the scorpion that does
[5:03]not invalidate the Sunnah that's fine it does not break that physical
[5:07]continuity because it is not excessive movements excessive movements big steps big
[5:16]movements or excessive movements break that continuity of Sunnah now if these
[5:22]small movements keep adding up they also invalidate the so now I'll
[5:26]give you an example some people have the habit as soon as
[5:30]they say Allah Akbar and they start this letter they start fidgeting
[5:33]with something right they pluck therefore many men they play with their
[5:37]beard pluck the hairs out they fidget with something doing this once
[5:41]twice three times is okay it's not going to invalidate the Salah
[5:47]but if you're repeatedly doing this and every like I that will
[5:51]invalidate the Salah because now this becomes excessive movements so anything that
[5:58]is excessive or anything that is so big and noticeable that it
[6:03]breaks that physical continuity of Salah will invalidate the Salah that's the
[6:09]general ruling here so that's why you'll find the author saying in
[6:18]number seven conocerle in la basura to salah that physical continuity of
[6:23]salah is broken that will invalidate the Salah now what's the proof
[6:28]for this he says the first proof is a Jamaa consensus it's
[6:31]the consensus of scholars and legal jurists that anything that is done
[6:37]excessively will break that continuity of Sunnah the second argument that he
[6:45]says he says what a clue Ellen we have also a rational
[6:48]proof over here because the essence of prayer is to show humbleness
[6:53]and to speak to your Lord so if you're doing all of
[7:00]these movements that could invalidate the Salah because rationally what does prayer
[7:10]mean that you stay focused humble your heart and your body parts
[7:14]focusing on Allah Spano tada so if you're busy doing other things
[7:18]that's problematic that in itself would violate the spirit of Salah so
[7:23]anything that violates the spirit of Salah invalidates the prayer so these
[7:28]are the two arguments that he brings and then he says you

[7:41]pushing warding off a scorpion he says these are not extreme movements
[7:45]they're very brief they don't involved they don't involve excessive movements and
[7:53]hence that continuity of salat is not broken any question about this
[7:59]seventh act which invalidates the salah by the way some scholars have
[8:05]discussed these counters have you seen the prayer counters if you're using
[8:13]the prayer beads the mess Baha you could argue that it is
[8:17]excessive movements right because when you're praying especially a most ahaab sana
[8:22]and you're counting let's say 300 70 100 it's mustahab to do
[8:25]certain times of Vik in these prayers now you're with one hand
[8:28]you're holding that prayer bead and you're counting now this the Imams
[8:36]of Alan Bates have authorized they have explained that this does not
[8:39]invalidate the Sunnah it's part of the player itself and you're simply
[8:43]counting some scholars have raised issue with the prayer counters you've seen
[8:49]those digital counters or yeah these days they're digital right you're just
[8:53]pressing your mind some scholars have said wait a minute this is
[8:55]excessive movements and we don't have at the time of the amounts
[9:00]that this is sanctioned and acceptable so this could invalidate the Salah
[9:03]some have raised this concern but the majority of scholars say no
[9:07]this is just like using a prayer be there it really isn't
[9:12]a difference it is considered in the eyes of people part of
[9:15]the prayer you're actually counting for the prayer itself it's not something
[9:18]that is outside of prayer so they don't consider this kaffir and
[9:23]fell and Moblin excessive movements that would invalidate the Salah they don't
[9:29]consider it that even though some have raised concerns but the majority
[9:33]of Miraj have not paid attention to these concerns so anything that
[9:38]is excessive would you know would invalidate the setup another common example

[9:47]they get a notification and they're so tempted to read it right
[9:54]just get a quick look at this notification and what it is
[9:56]now of course doing this reduces from the value of Salah because
[10:02]you're less concentrating and the Imam Mahdi's and I was very clear
[10:05]that the reward you get for your Salah is determined by what
[10:10]by your concentration how much you concentrate there's no discussion there but
[10:14]doesn't invalidate the Salah if you did it once or twice and
[10:20]prayer just a quick look fine even though it reduces from the
[10:22]reward of your so that it does not invalidate it but if
[10:27]you're doing it every few seconds every notification you get and in
[10:30]one prayer once that you get 20 notifications and you keep reading
[10:33]them yes that is excessive movements because they add up so if
[10:40]someone does that they do invalidate their set up their reading every
[10:44]message that they're getting so these are some points to keep in
[10:47]mind as we examine the seventh one so any other questions about
[10:53]the seventh one let's now move on to the eighth one the
[10:56]eighth act that invalidates Salah is drinking and eating and scholars are
[11:03]pretty unanimous about this now it's obvious that you know drinking a
[11:10]full cup or eating a full bite invalidates the Salah but here's
[11:15]where it gets tricky and scholars are very meticulous about this sometimes
[11:20]you may have just had a meal and there are some small
[11:23]bits of food that remain in your mouth sometimes between the teeth
[11:29]or sometimes you know they just stay in the mouth if you
[11:31]did not have enough time to wash your mouth before it's aa
[11:35]which is by the way highly was to have to wash the
[11:37]mouth and brush before each Sunnah it's highly highly recommended to brush
[11:41]the teeth and to clear the mouth now let's say there are
[11:46]some myths of food that remain in the mouth and then you
[11:48]say Allah Akbar and then you notice that bit of food and
[11:54]you want to swallow it many many scholars will consider this eating
[11:58]yes you're not eating a full bite a full meal but you're
[12:03]eating that bit of food that invalidates the Sunnah and that's problematic
[12:08]so this is something to be aware of before you pray try
[12:14]to make sure that there aren't any there isn't any remnants food
[12:17]in your mouth because if you swallow that according to the understanding
[12:21]of many scholars that is a type of eating and that would
[12:25]invalidate your Sunnah and that's problematic so eating and drinking in Salah
[12:32]invalidates that prayer one should not eat or drink during the prayer
[12:38]and pay attention to these small bits of food if you swallow
[12:42]them that is considered eating if they remain in your mouth that's
[12:46]not considered eating you didn't eat them but if you actually swallow
[12:50]them that qualifies as eating and that would invalidate the prayer so
[12:56]this is number eight number nine and this is a point of
[13:04]dispute between the schools of thought in the school of a debate
[13:07]one of the acts that invalidate prayer is saying I mean after
[13:15]surah al-fatah when it comes to other schools of thought we find
[13:19]them observe this if you've prayed with them you've noticed that when
[13:24]the Imam who's leading the prayer says they are a little beyond
[13:28]him what Allah lean most of them say what they say I
[13:35]mean after that now the word I mean in Arabic simply indicates
[13:40]the request for acceptance it's just like amen in English whenever you
[13:48]make a prayer you say I mean in other words you're asking
[13:51]allah subhanho wa taala to accept this prayer so the meaning of
[13:57]it is not problematic we don't have an issue with the meaning
[14:00]of it the meaning is nice because Surat al hamd has a
[14:03]number of Jaws Allah guide us to the straight path oh Allah
[14:08]you know there are a number of prayers in salat enhance so
[14:13]if you say that the meaning of it the content of it
[14:15]is fine but remember the Salah that we offer must be observed
[14:22]exactly how the prophets of Allah Allahu Allah offered it we cannot
[14:27]add anything we cannot delete or omit anything the Prophet sallallaahu I
[14:31]did not say I mean in his prayers what is our argument
[14:38]to support that we have sahih hadiths in sunni sources that tell
[14:42]us how the Prophet prayed from beginning to end these hadith do
[14:49]not make any mention of the Prophet saying I mean had he
[14:55]said I mean they would have documented it and in those gatherings
[15:00]in which the Prophet was praying and the Sahaba were documenting how
[15:06]the Prophet was praying Abu Hurairah was present himself he came during
[15:11]the last two years of the prophet's life when those companions are
[15:15]narrating to us and say hey sources how the Prophet prayed Abu
[15:23]Huraira was present he himself was present and he is one of
[15:26]those people who witness how the Prophet prayed without I mean there's
[15:31]no mention of it later we have in a if that Abu
[15:34]Huraira says the Prophet said I mean there's a discrepancy here first
[15:37]of all what about the other companions out of all of them
[15:42]Abu Hurairah noticed what about the hundreds of others who saw the
[15:46]Prophet pray everyday jamar in the mosque how come they never made
[15:48]a mention of that that the Prophet said I mean secondly he
[15:51]himself abou how come in those gatherings when the Companions described the
[15:56]full Sunnah of the Prophet he did not make a mention of
[16:01]the I mean later we have a hadith that surfaces that up
[16:04]that is attributed to Abu Hurairah in which he claims the Prophet
[16:10]said I mean that in itself causes us to doubt that the
[16:13]Prophet really said that so when we examine this objectively we see
[16:20]there are all indications that the prophets are allow and what I
[16:24]never said it the second point over here those schools of thought
[16:27]who say you should say I mean after al hamd do they
[16:33]say it's Rajab it's mandatory or is it mustahab what do what
[16:37]what do the majority of Sunni schools of thought say they say
[16:40]it's mustahab it's not watchable you don't have to say it it's
[16:45]supposed to have for you to say we go back to the
[16:46]previous point that we mentioned in the previous lesson whenever something is
[16:51]doubtful we really don't know if the Prophet said it or not
[16:59]it's mustahab it's not like it's watch it what does the intellect
[17:03]say what does the law of precaution state the lot of precaution
[17:07]says don't do it because if you do it if you say
[17:12]I mean and it turns out the Prophet never said it and
[17:18]you added something into sana because those who say it they say
[17:21]it with the Nia that it is mustahab the Prophet used to
[17:24]do it that's their intention so they're adding something into their Sunnah
[17:27]so if it turns out that the Prophet never said it what
[17:29]happens to that soda it's problematic that Sarah is not according to
[17:33]the Salah of the Prophet now if it happens that I mean
[17:40]is mustahab and you did not do it as your salah invalid
[17:42]no you just left out something that's mr.
[17:46]hodda so between two paths either you invalidate your Salah or you
[17:51]observable stab act what is the intellect state the law of precaution
[17:54]says Savior Salah don't do it that's the safest path because if
[17:59]you do it you could be invalidating your Salah but if you
[18:01]don't do it what are you losing you're just not doing the
[18:05]most AHA pact so whenever something is doubtful whether the prophets will
[18:09]allow any wine at dinner or not don't do it you should
[18:11]only do something if you certain if there are so many pieces
[18:17]of evidence that he did it which is not the case what
[18:18]hadith from Abu Huraira which is contradictory to the other reports of
[18:22]other companions who did not mention that and remember I mean is
[18:30]not something that is not visible the Prophet prayed all the larger
[18:34]box in the messages every single day in Medina that's something companions
[18:39]saw day and night and yet only Abu Huraira epics you know
[18:43]it realizes that what about the other companions how come none of
[18:48]them really figured out that the Prophet said that this in itself
[18:55]tells us is problematic yes we say al hamdu lillahi rabbil aalameen
[19:01]first of all that is mustahab has taught to us by the
[19:07]Imams of l-bayt secondly the difference between our mean and alhamdulillah banana
[19:12]mean in your Salah you can always pray to God and recite
[19:20]a verse from the Quran as general stepa and hamdu lillahi rabbil
[19:24]alameen is a Quranic verse isn't it - it sure lots of
[19:26]ham ham - reliable on I mean that's like the second verse
[19:30]whenever you recite a verse from the Quran anywhere in your Salah
[19:34]because you want to seek the blessing of the Quran it's fine
[19:40]there's no problem in that but the word I mean is not
[19:42]a Quranic word so that's why if the Prophet did not do
[19:47]it and you're saying a word that's not a Quranic word you've
[19:50]invalidate your Sunnah because that's called human speech and we said the
[19:53]two days ago that one of the acts that invalidates so that's
[19:58]what it's talking it's speaking speaking and it's not a prayer that's
[20:02]mentioned in the Quran and there's no evidence the Prophet said it
[20:06]so you're said I becomes invalid Kadam oh I'd I mean that's
[20:12]the difference whereas an hamdu lillah but I mean even if the
[20:14]Prophet didn't say it let's see let's just assume the Prophet never
[20:18]said it you're saying it because it's a Quranic verse and you're
[20:21]just seeking the blessing of the Quran fine what's the problem with
[20:23]that you're just saying Quran and reading Quran in your sutta anywhere
[20:26]in sana if you want to say it have the lot of
[20:30]light even in your core say it that doesn't invalidate your Salah
[20:31]if you'd like to say alhamdulillah but al-amin in your suit say
[20:35]it fine it's a prayer anytime you you remember Salah is how
[20:41]you supplicate to Allah spano Atalla so anything from the Quran that
[20:44]you say in your Salah with the intention of supplicating to God
[20:49]is acceptable saying how do I mean anywhere you like that's fine
[20:53]it's completely okay the word I mean in the form that they
[20:59]use no and the meaning that they use is not a piranha
[21:02]quirt show it to me which verse of the Quran it's not
[21:08]a Quranic word yes there is another form of the word that's

[23:11]see this is a command from the imam hasan he says you
[23:13]say alhamdulillah bilal i mean it's mustahab it's recommended to say alhamdulillah
[23:18]B'Elanna me well our topple our mean and do not say our
[23:26]me so here we have a prohibition nay he from the Imam
[23:29]now we mentioned before whenever in an act of Salah in an
[23:36]act of worship there is a prohibition if you commit that prohibition
[23:41]what happens to your Salah is it just you've sinned and you
[23:45]violated Islamic law or more than that the Salah becomes invalid because
[23:50]when a last telling you don't say this word in salah and
[23:56]you're praying or about an analyte salah to see closeness to god
[24:00]you have a contradiction here on the one hand you want to
[24:04]pray to get closer to Allah on the other hand you're disobeying
[24:06]Allah in this very prayer through this prayer you're disobeying God you
[24:10]can't obey and disobey God at the same time that's a that's
[24:15]a logical contradiction hence we state that prohibition in Salah leads to
[24:21]the invalidity of the Sunnah so whenever there's a prohibition that's how
[24:27]we treat it and the amount under some time clearly says do
[24:32]not say I mean I mean we'll break the Salah so this
[24:38]is the ninth act that invalidate s' the prayer the tenth one
[24:42]is if you have a doubt we will examine this in detail
[24:48]in sha Allah whenever there is a doubt in the Salah if
[24:52]that doubt occurs in salatu salam anywhere in surat Asuma in surat
[24:57]al measurement or in the first two Rakas of lore us or
[25:04]Anisha you have a doubt you don't know in which luck I
[25:10]you are the doubt regarding the number of units that you're praying
[25:13]whenever you have a doubt insalata so boy so that's a limited
[25:16]or the first two like as of any sooner no sir I
[25:20]becomes invalid so let's say you're praying somewhere and you don't know
[25:23]wait was this the first like our the second like I and
[25:25]you give it some thought you're still stuck let's a doubt it's
[25:34]a 50-50 yes if you develop confidence 8090 percent that you're in

[25:39]if it's a doubt it invalidates the Sunnah if your so that's

[25:55]thought you have no confidence it said doubt your Salah becomes invalid

[26:10]the third you're still not sure because if it's between the third
[26:15]and fourth there's a way to address that who you're not sure
[26:17]is this the first is it the second is it between the

[26:25]one of the situations that invalidate the Salah is to have a
[26:29]doubt about other than raka at the number of units and salah
[26:37]that would invalidate the salah yes would there be an amount of
[26:40]time or you have to determine okay which is it like before

[26:48]set amount of time any amount of time that is not excessive
[26:55]so if you need 10 seconds even to think and try to

[27:16]a 15 second pause does not break that continuity that's fine that's
[27:23]fine the hadith says if your mind tells you I have confidence

[27:32]if your mind tells you I'm confident most likely you're in a
[27:38]second the hadith says Allah wants to make it easy on you
[27:40]act upon it and even if it happened that your Salah was
[27:45]wrong you were in the you know not in the right like
[27:47]huh Allah will accept that prayer so yes whenever your mind is
[27:52]giving you confidence that you're in this like I you may act
[27:56]upon them that's fine come on that's fine because we have a
[27:59]specific hadith even though one conjecture you know the Quran does and
[28:06]and the hadith as well they tell us never take one you
[28:10]always must have your pain but in the number of units we
[28:12]actually have specific evidence that we can you know accept move on
[28:20]so even if you might might be playing tricks on you that's
[28:23]fine Allah has made it easy Allah says go with that so
[28:28]we will examine this in detail inshallah the next chapter that we
[28:35]will examine next week is the chapter of a cell when we
[28:42]make mistakes on cela all of us make mistakes in our prayers
[28:48]not all of the mistakes that we make invalidate the Salah there
[28:51]is actually a way to save the sunnah to salvage the Salah
[28:57]some people make this argument they're like wait if I make the
[29:02]slightest slightest mistake even if there's a way for me to fix
[29:04]it for example by doing the sujood of Sahu at the end
[29:09]or there's a certain process to fix the sellout we'll mention that
[29:12]forget it I just want to start over they cut their Salah
[29:17]do you have that right no because when you start your Salah
[29:26]you enter into sacred dialogue with God and if you just cut
[29:30]that it's like you're talking to someone and you just disrupt the
[29:33]meaning and leave that's very offensive that's inappropriate yes if you do
[29:40]an act that invalidates the Salah of us no sir I was
[29:43]gone you have to start over but if you do some of
[29:47]these minor mistakes that we will discuss or some people there in
[29:49]their third or fourth rack and then they have doubts am i

[30:03]remember that Salah is a sacred dialogue with Allah subhana WA Ta'ala
[30:08]and that is why scholars historically have ruled that once you enter
[30:16]into Rajab salah the lodge of sana you cannot break your salah
[30:19]unless you have like an urgent reason to do so saving someone's
[30:23]life there's something urgent you cannot break your sana yes breaking the
[30:29]Salah halfway in the beginning at the end is haram it's a
[30:36]sin because you've entered a sacred dialogue with allah subhanaw taala it's
[30:41]like seeking an appointment with someone you go to that appointment let's
[30:43]say it's a 5-minute the point in 10 minutes appointment suddenly halfway
[30:46]you just store out of the room is that appropriate it's not
[30:52]appropriate once you say Allahu Akbar you start the same great dialogue
[30:56]with God the only way that this dialogue is wrapped up is
[31:00]through the test name by finishing the setup properly so you can't
[31:06]just cut yourself halfway and then stop or do something else or
[31:09]say let me start from the beginning that's not acceptable so that's
[31:12]why it's very very important for us to know the rules of
[31:16]Sahu and making mistakes and Salah because most of the mistakes we
[31:19]make and Salah don't invalidate the Salah there's a certain there's a
[31:23]there's a procedure to address those mistakes it's very important for us
[31:27]to be familiar with those procedures otherwise we fall into the problem
[31:34]of breaking our set out which is a sin it's very offensive
[31:36]to the status of allah subhanaw taala so just keep that in
[31:41]mind because I know some people based on my experience when we
[31:44]talk about these rules they're like you know what anytime I have
[31:47]the slightest doubt slight mistake I just start over who told you
[31:51]have that right you can't just start over by doing so you
[31:56]just committed a sin because you ended your Salah so we have
[31:59]to be familiar with these rules so that if this happens while
[32:02]we're praying we have a way to salvage that any questions we'll
