[0:23]Wonder does Ramadan bring out the worst in us or the best

[0:27]in US psychologically I believe that your ability to gain psychological benefits

[0:34]during this holy month is directly related to your preconceived attitude about

[0:42]Ramadan if we approach this month as a burden to something to

[0:46]get it over with with no excitement then definitely our mental health

[0:50]is not going to improve but if we take the focus away

[0:55]from the restrictions and we see the bigger picture we can knock

[1:00]down those self-limiting beliefs and attitudes and use them as a stepping

[1:06]stone for our personal and spiritual growth so before and during this

[1:10]blessed month check in and see if you have any automatic negative

[1:14]thoughts that may be getting in the way am I annoyed that

[1:19]I have to fast today am I setting myself up for disappointment

[1:24]by taking on more Ahmed than I know I can handle am

[1:31]I exhausting myself unnecessarily before Ramadan has even begun based on these

[1:39]answers make an attempt to reframe your mindset and adjust your routine

[1:45]I am grateful for the opportunity to fast I may not be

[1:51]able to do all the Amel I would like to do with

[1:53]my small children but Allah rewards my intention I am so overwhelmed

[2:02]and exhausted maybe I don't need to meal plan all the dinners

[2:06]for the entire month and I can just focus on the first

[2:14]week wants us to look forward to this month as you would

[2:17]a best friend who is coming to visit you after a long

[2:22]period of time of not seeing them so if we want to

[2:26]reap the rewards of this month we need to focus on the

[2:29]beauty of Ramadan first and foremost so here are three psychological benefits

[2:34]of Ramadan to consider focusing on during this blessed month first Ramadan

[2:42]really helps us develop our self-awareness and self-insight we all can probably

[2:49]think of the friend who is hunger angry or hangry during Ramadan

[2:52]or the co-worker who constantly blames their forgetfulness on fasting and there

[2:59]are also those who may strive to have the most impeccable Ramadan

[3:07]decor and traditions for their families while at the same time feeling

[3:13]burnt out in the process of this perfectionism and I believe that

[3:19]Ramadan brings out the qualities within us that we need to work

[3:24]on the most and that you know our adverse psychological reactions or

[3:30]triggers are an indication of the areas that we need to work

[3:36]on and we need to focus on not only during Ramadan but

[3:38]throughout our lives for instance if you're finding that you're easily irritated

[3:43]with others while hungry this may be an indication that you need

[3:50]to work on your communication skills you need to work on your

[3:55]emotional regulation not just during this month but throughout the year if

[4:00]someone is experiencing forgetfulness at work perhaps one should ask themselves is

[4:04]this habitual and how can I create systems in place to help

[4:12]myself improve my memory and my discipline insha Allah if I'm a

[4:16]mother who is endlessly scrolling for ideas to make Ramadan incredibly special

[4:21]through perhaps materialistic Pursuits maybe I need to go back to the

[4:27]Simplicity of Islam and the connection with others that truly makes Ramadan

[4:32]most special the second psychological benefit of Ramadan is that it teaches

[4:39]self-restraint the holy month is an opportunity for us to address any

[4:46]unhealthy behaviors and with the Advent of high-speed technology we've become accustomed

[4:54]to instant results instant gratification Ramadan is truly a reminder that success

[5:02]comes to those who wait and who sacrificed for a higher purpose

[5:05]inshallah in fact the number one reason people tend to fail in

[5:09]an Endeavor is that they give in to immediate Temptations rather than

[5:15]staying focused on their longer term goals when young children are presented

[5:25]with an attractive toy or piece of candy and told not to

[5:28]touch it until a timer goes off those who showed the the

[5:34]strongest self-restraint by waiting for the timer were found 14 years later

[5:40]to have higher executive functioning this includes problem solving this includes good

[5:45]decision making and the ability to switch from one task to another

[5:53]the third psychological benefit from Ramadan is improved mood an article published

[5:58]in the Journal of research in medical and dental Sciences conducted on

[6:04]students in Iran found that fasting during Ramadan increases positive mental health

[6:12]several other research studies have also demonstrated that individuals fasting during the

[6:20]month of Ramadan have shown a reduction in stress anxiety and even

[6:25]depression other spiritual practices have also been found to help mitigate psychological

[6:34]stressors by using one's Faith to come to terms with psychological crises

[6:41]additionally throughout Ramadan there is an emphasis on engaging in charitable actions

[6:48]and that can boost endorphins our feel-good brain chemicals so being charitable

[6:54]it helps to improve not only our self-esteem as we become immersed

[7:03]in more meaningful activities but it also helps us to combat feelings

[7:08]of loneliness and feelings of isolation I pray that this Ramadan you

[7:13]reap not only the spiritual benefits but also the psychological benefits of

[7:19]this blessed months foreign [Music]
