Independence means our work isn’t due to the influence of anyone or anything.

==============================
My friends, what does independence mean? Independence means our work should not be due to the influence of anyone or anything. So who should influence our actions? Only God. I have a question. Why is it if I work due to being influenced by God, this means independence, but if I work due to being influenced by others, that does not mean independence? If I work for the sake of God, this is called independence, but if I work because of my friend or a neighbor, that is not called independence? If I’m afraid of Hell, this is independence, but if I’m afraid of other people’s criticism, that is not independence.
God wants us to be His servant while being independent. Only God can keep me independent. The reason is this verse from the Qur’an. “The Hour is coming. I will conceal it, so that every soul may be recompensed for its labors.” [20:15] I will conceal it. If I (God) want to reward a person and honor his true value, I’ll hide his reward. Do you know why when you work for God, that is independence? Because God doesn’t reward or punish you very quickly. He just watches you. Because God does not warn, advise or blame you very much.
Actually, this is why He has made you a human being. The Qur’an says, “I am appointing someone as my deputy on earth.” Each one of you are God’s deputies. God has so many deputies! Is God independent or dependent? Independent. So how should you be? You should be independent too. What does servitude to God mean? I will say this again, and we should repeat this one thousand times. Servitude to God means He says, “I can take you to the peak of independence with the program that I give you. I keep your independence, and take you to reach the peak of development while guaranteeing your independence.”
Being God’s servant does not mean that your independence will be eliminated. It means your dependence is only on God. And God will make you independent. If we aren’t independent, we have harmed ourselves. It means we won’t get close to God. When we harm ourselves, this means we won’t get close to God. When we stop ourselves from development, this means we wont’ get close to God. When we stop our growth, this means we won’t get close to God.
One question. Why is it if I work for the sake of God, this is called independence but if I work for my friend or a neighbor, that is not independence? Do you know why when you work for God, that is independence? Because God doesn’t reward or punish you very quickly. Because God does not warn, advise or blame you very much. God says, “I have created you as a human being so that you won’t be under the influence of anything.”

How to Foster Creativity

Students will experience their incredible creativity if they don’t fear.

Fear quickly gets a person going. But what does it do next? A person loses the ability to move forward. When one’s creativity is gone, he won’t have great energy and vitality in order to have a strong motivation to uplift his soul.
If we eliminate fear, creativity will follow. A creative person should be somewhat brave. Don’t frighten your children from this and that. Then, if you pour knowledge into their brains [said jokingly], they won’t be able to do anything with this knowledge. They have only memorized things. A scholar should be free from being inhibited by fear! An artist should be free from being inhibited by fear! A fear of competition shouldn’t overwhelm him.
A fear of being poor or other imaginary fears shouldn’t overwhelm a person. A tradition says that fears of becoming poor have made people wretched. One shouldn’t be afraid. Not that he should be given so much money that he’s not afraid. That’s useless. This won’t correct his habit of fearing. If he isn’t afraid now, he will be in other cases.
What does fear do to a person? Fears create a quick energy in a person. But in the long run, they paralyze him/her. When some teachers or parents want to teach something quickly, they frighten the child. They quickly use the tool of “fear.” “Man is created of haste.” [Qur’an 21:37] Haste pushes people to use the fastest tool that does the job.
Most of our students will become scholars and experience their incredible creativity if they don’t fear! One reason we discuss being tested is so that we can accept the tribulations and not be afraid anymore. Fear quickly produces motivation in a person. It pushes a person to move forward. But then it paralyzes a person. Some medicines paralyze people. Some severe illnesses really bother people. People like to be cured quickly. They take some medicine and are quickly cured. But that same medicine paralyzes the person a few years later! See how amazing. A suitable example. Have you ever seen such a good example?! Fear works in the same way!
Students will experience their incredible creativity if they don’t fear.

What is the Coronavirus telling us?

One of the very valuable statements from Imam Baqir (‘a) is a letter he wrote to Sa’d. In the beginning of the letter, the Imam mentions a subject, which is needed by today’s society. “In the Name of God, the Companionate, the Merciful. I advise you to have ‘Taqwa’ (be careful of your duty to Allah). Because, this brings well-being from devastation and benefit when returning (to God).” [Osul Kafi, vol. 8, p. 52] Taqwa saves you from destruction. Your assets won’t be wasted. Your talents won’t be destroyed. It will become something valuable for your Hereafter.
The tradition continues, “Because of their Taqwa, Noah and the ones who were with him (the believers) in the ship were rescued.” Salih and his people were rescued from lightning with Taqwa. What does Taqwa mean? Vigilance. Be careful. That person is a careful person. What do doctors constantly say about this virus that has appeared? Take care. Wash your hands. Don’t kiss others. Be careful not to touch unclean environments. Right? This is taking care. Is it something bad?
Some people are not careful at all. When you remind them and they start being careful, they experience a new feeling. What is the difference between Taqwa and an ordinary being careful? An example of an ordinary being careful is when it’s dark and you touch things carefully and are careful not to bump into anything. This is for when you yourself are taking care of your world. This is like these regular sanitary measures and other ways of taking care. It’s like being careful when driving not to have an accident. This is a minimum amount of being careful. It’s very stylish and beautiful too.
Another kind is for people to be careful about carrying out God’s commands. Being careful in this case is a thousand times more. The Commander of the Faithful, Ali (‘a), said, “Whoever is careful about God’s commands, God will take care of him/her.” The effect of God taking care of us is much more than us taking care of ourselves. Sometimes a person takes care of his greatest benefit. He/she is careful about God’s opinion. This is Taqwa. You are careful like a child who is careful but is in his parent’s embrace. One hundred times more than the child, his father takes care of him not to fall or be injured. If one tries to hit this child, he will bring his hand forward as a shield to protect himself. But, more important than this is the father’s hand, which suddenly comes forward and protects the child.
We should take care for our interests to be protected. Taking care is the first condition to being successful in life. Taking care means paying attention. A pious person is the one who is careful. “Taking care” is something nice and it doesn’t get old. This is not like saying, “You like to be religious, but I don’t!” A doctor is careful. You like a careful and watchful person. God likes such a person too. This is a very chic life.
Then, the tradition continues, “With Taqwa, God protects His servant from whatever does not come to his mind.” Whatever his mind doesn’t understand, God will compensate for him. Imam Baqir (‘a) is mentioning in this tradition whatever doesn’t come to your mind and is hidden from you. How should I know which environment is infected by virus and which environment isn’t. Should I enter it, or not?
One of those who has fallen ill with Coronavirus is putting posts in his page. He said, “I became sick and went to the hospital.” He’s healing now. He said, “No matter how much I think about how I got this virus, nothing comes to my mind.” A person doesn’t understand! But, what if God takes care of a person? What is this virus telling us? It is saying, “Be more careful.” All of life is this. If the most important thing that you want to take care of is God’s satisfaction, God will open the way for you so that you may pass through problems when everyone is stuck in a dead end.
Whoever sees his problems in life have increased should be more careful. He should pray more on time and with more attention. When you are careful about God’s opinion, that He is not ignored, He is not disrespected, and are careful about His command, all of your worldly benefits will be provided better. This is what Imam Baqir (‘a) was saying. We need to be careful in misfortunes. If you want to be saved from this illness or any other fatal problem, you need Taqwa, Taqwa of the tongue, ears, and eyes. Increase this Taqwa and you will clearly see its effects.

==============================

It wasn’t atheists and heretics who didn’t believe in God at all who tried to kill the Prophet (s). It wasn’t like this at all. Those who claimed to be believers and religious tried to do this. The people at the time of the Prophet (s) had some good points but they committed these crimes. This is something very precise. But we are used to saying that the people at the time of the Prophet (s) were bad and foolish. We have heard the word “ignorance.”
- “They say the people worshiped idols and buried their children alive.”
Yes, they did these things.
- “They had all kinds of vices.”
But it wasn’t like this at all. Most of the principal enemies of the Holy Prophet of Islam (s) were his relatives. Abu Jahl and Abu Sufyan were two of his enemies. Abu Lahab was the Prophet’s (s) uncle. They were from the same ancestors as the Prophet (s). scholars have said the statements made about the Arabs being very bad is mostly about the Bedouin Arabs who lived in the surrounding areas. Otherwise, the Arabs who lived in the cities had their own culture.
But those living in the cities wanted to kill the Prophet (s), not the Bedouin Arabs! We should read Islamic history again. Most people think that ignorance refers to the people who were the opposite of the Prophet (s). They think ignorance means absolute darkness.
- “Yes, darkness.”
But it wasn’t like this at all.
- “We think they were a group of sinners who worshiped idols.”
It wasn’t like this at all. I have even brought a sample of their poems about monotheism. For example, one poem is this, «الحمدلله لا شریکَ لَهُ مَن لم یقلها فنَفسَهُ ظَلَما» “Praise is for Allah, Who has no associate, and whoever does not believe in this has wronged himself.”
- “Who said this? The ignorant Arabs?”
Yes, the ignorant Arabs.
The Arabic language used in the Qur’an had to be in a way that the people could understand what the Prophet (s) was saying. After hearing the verse, “All praise is for Allah,” the people shouldn’t wonder, “Who is Allah?!” Then the Prophet (s) would answer, “I’ll first prove that there is a God, then I’ll talk about Him creating the world.” The Prophet (s) was sent to a religious, ethical people, despite all the bad points that have been related about them. He was sent to a city that was famous worldwide as being a religious city.
Religious people, be careful about the reappearance of the Savior! We shouldn’t condemn the enemies of the Prophet (s) saying they did all kinds of bad deeds. They didn’t have certain bad points. And they had many good points. Mr. Abu Jahl – the reason I’m using the term “Mr.” is since he was a man but not to respect him! When he wanted to participate in the Battle of Badr, he clung onto the Ka’ba. He said, “O God, Muhammad has brought a new religion and our religion is older. O God, if we follow the truth, make us victorious.” They even talked to God.
The word “Allah” wasn’t a new word for them. Even going to the Ka’ba and worshiping during the time of Hajj was done in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah [just as it is now]. Many of their movements were similar to the current Hajj. They fought many battles with the Prophet to kill him! What will we do if the Imam of the Time (aj) comes?!

No blaming!

Imam Sadiq (‘a) said, “Whoever blames a believer for a sin, will commit that sin before he dies.” [Kafi, vol. 5, p. 329]

What causes a person to hide him/herself? Ridicule, especially in childhood. Blaming causes people to hide themselves. A person cannot correct himself that quickly, so he hides himself, especially when a mother blames her child, or she blames her husband, brother or father. There is no difference in blaming.
“What if a person sins?” Absolutely forbidden! “What if a sinner is going to be executed? Can we blame him?” Absolutely forbidden! Absolutely forbidden means it’s absolutely forbidden! We shouldn’t blame anyone! A tradition says we shouldn’t advise a person in public. Because, if you advise someone in public, this is blaming. You’ve crushed him. Don’t do this!
God hates blaming so much that He takes revenge for it in this world. God says, “If you blame someone, I’ll cause you to do the same thing he did!” “Ok God, have mercy. I just made a mistake.” “Didn’t I tell you not to blame others?! You’ve crushed him!”
Do you know what happens when he hides himself?! He’ll become an unbeliever or a hypocrite. No mocking. No blaming. No backbiting. No ridiculing. “You’re saying everything is forbidden!” Don’t ruin the discussion. When did I say that everything is forbidden? For example, being kind is praiseworthy. A tradition says that if you like someone, you should tell him. “I like you. I become happy when I see you.” That’s it. I like you.
The tradition says you’re being unfaithful not to tell him. Don’t you like him? So tell him, “I like you!” Ah! What calmness! The storms and anxieties suddenly quiet down. We have tons of commands in religion that help so the environment can be calm and everyone can feel safe. No one should be crushed, so that he doesn’t hide himself. So that he doesn’t hide himself! Any kind of anxiety causes people to withdraw and hide themselves. Let’s not do this.
What causes a person to hide him/herself? Blaming. Blaming causes people to hide themselves. A person cannot correct himself that quickly, so he hides himself.
