[16:29]muhamed muham e e inshallah for tonight's majus we are honored to
[18:27]host shik mikad Alina he not a stranger to Portsmouth and we
[18:31]are delighted to have him back to recite for us here at
[18:34]our beloved Center his topic for tonight will be life satisfaction which
[18:38]will be a continuation of the lecture delivered at huat stanmore on
[18:41]the 10th of the sh Alam she mikdad thank you for accepting
[18:46]our invitation M kindly join me in welcoming him to the member
[18:49]with a recitation of three loud salaat Muhammad Muhammad this [Music] alhamdulilla
[19:56]muham m [Music] my respected brothers and sisters it does indeed feel
[20:54]like being at home alhamdulillah it's an honor and a privilege to
[20:57]be with you once again the topic for tonight inshah is a
[21:01]continuation from a topic that we began 10 days ago in titled
[21:10]life satisfaction I mentioned that one of the ways that countries and
[21:15]the people of countries are categorized is based on a level and
[21:19]an index called life satisfaction or the level of Happiness how much
[21:24]people are happy in this country if you'd like to know finland's
[21:27]been winning the title for the last 6 years so in case
[21:32]you want to be happy you know where to move to and
[21:35]we mentioned that it's important for us to understand what does life
[21:39]satisfaction mean from an Islamic perspective by the way it was a
[21:42]joke don't move to Finland the point that we want to make
[21:46]is that Islam tells us that life satisfaction is an emotion it's
[21:53]a feeling but is very much linked to our understanding and our
[21:57]perspective of ity as well as a right correct evaluation based on
[22:05]the right criteria so when we evaluate how much happier we are
[22:08]if we have the right criteria for this evaluation then we will
[22:12]have a high level of Life satisfaction and indeed life satisfaction is
[22:17]a very important topic we all want to be happy we want
[22:21]we all want to feel a level of satisfaction in relation to
[22:25]our lives so the last previous talk I mentioned two very important
[22:30]points two very important tips in relation to how to increase our
[22:33]life satisfaction one of them was about giving value to the right
[22:38]things in our lives there are things that we own but we
[22:42]need to Value those things that we own give them the right
[22:45]appreciation if we're able to do that then we can increase our
[22:50]life satisfaction and the second one was related to the idea that
[22:54]the things that the difficulties that befall in our lives there is
[22:58]goodness and this once a person understands that that which is difficult
[23:04]in his life there is a reason why this happens that Allah
[23:08]wants it to happen for a particular reason and there's goodness in
[23:12]that reason and nothing but goodness if we understand this the level
[23:17]of satisfaction that we have in relation to our life despite the
[23:20]difficulties will increase and we give examples of as Zab and the
[23:23]story of kalala so those two points inah we mentioned them in
[23:29]the last session for today I'd like to mention two other points
[23:32]the first point relation to how to increase our life satisfaction is
[23:37]related to how we evaluate what we own all of us we
[23:47]possess different things in our lives a house a car job money
[23:50]the question is how do we evaluate what we own if I
[23:56]ask you what you own what you have are you satisfied with
[23:59]it or not it's a very important question in the society that
[24:09]we live in we are always told that you can achieve more
[24:12]do not be satisfied with what you have you own this much
[24:17]salary no no no it's not enough you can do more increase
[24:20]your work hours you have to earn a bit more I have
[24:24]this car no I can get a better car I can get
[24:30]a better this I always am chasing in my life something to
[24:34]own more because I always evaluate myself as not having enough this
[24:39]is how we live and this is why you find people are
[24:45]constantly on the chase I want more if I evaluate they always
[24:48]evaluate themselves in the negative I don't have enough yet there's still
[24:53]more I can do and that eventually leads them not to be
[24:58]satisfied with themselves not to be satisfied with their life if they
[25:01]ask you can I evaluate your life you say no I can
[25:04]still do more I can still earn more my house can still
[25:08]be a bit bigger and a bit better in a better area
[25:13]my car my job my career and so life satisfaction generally decreases
[25:20]but you find that Islam tells us that this should not be
[25:27]the case Islam tells us that when when you evaluate what you
[25:31]possess you should always see it as huge as very big as
[25:39]a lot it's a change in perspective all it is it's how
[25:45]we see things and I mentioned this at the beginning the rule
[25:48]of Life satisfaction goes back to perspective how we understand things if
[25:53]our understanding if our world view is the way we look at
[25:58]things changes then suddenly the same person his career hasn't changed his
[26:01]job salary hasn't changed his car hasn't changed but suddenly more satisfied
[26:06]with life I'm a happy person what happened suddenly I wow I
[26:12]own so much the Hadith tells us the little that you have
[26:23]count it as a lot ST means counted as a lot I'll
[26:28]mention the second part of the Hadith in a moment but you
[26:33]see how the Hadith tells us that that which you own when
[26:37]you evaluate what you own count it as a lot you know
[26:41]it really changes we have in a Hadith for example you can
[26:43]check the as well you may laugh at this when you go
[26:49]to someone's house for food happened to me a few times alhamdulillah
[26:52]I was honored to be guests of many noble people today when
[26:57]none is brought to the table usually they bring the nun the
[27:01]the bread the rootle first you are meant to not expect anything
[27:07]more than this Subhan Allah nine was B alhamdulillah thank you so
[27:12]much after the curry comes you should be like wow this is
[27:17]too much I wasn't expecting it and this next meal that comes
[27:25]it becomes like amazing it becomes like wow Subhan Allah what a
[27:30]big I've received today you tell your wife thank you so much
[27:34]but you see the perspective changes as opposed to somebody who the
[27:39]nine is brought the salad is brought the curry is brought we're
[27:41]supposed to have another meal as well the side I need to
[27:43]choose I'm not satisfied today I didn't we get you didn't get
[27:49]enough you see the perspective is so important as Believers we have
[27:56]to be people of very low expectations you know it goes a
[28:02]long way I don't know how many in all of you have
[28:05]guests at home and you go to people's houses how beautiful is
[28:07]when a guest comes to your house and is a very low
[28:12]maintenance guest have you had those kind of guests that come to
[28:14]your house in all of us are like this low maintenance right
[28:17]doesn't expect anything everything that you give him he's he's happy with
[28:21]it he's satisfied this is a lot already alhamd you've done so
[28:24]much for me as opposed to somebody who comes no I want
[28:31]this and this has to be done as well this has to
[28:34]be done as well this has to be done as well not
[28:37]satisfied with it right now our lives should be like this Us
[28:39]in relation to Allah subhanahu wa taala every that comes upon us
[28:46]thank you so much this is a lot oh Allah this was
[28:48]a lot oh Allah I didn't expect this much this car Subhan
[28:53]Allah it's a great n and when we are and our attitudes
[28:58]is like this are life changes you find yourself very happy very
[29:01]content very satisfied with your life I'll carry on the Hadith the
[29:07]Hadith says to I miss the word this attitude of counting your
[29:15]as great increases in your sh one of the result of being
[29:23]like this of appreciating what we have the little that we have
[29:26]counting it as a lot increases in US the level of gratitude
[29:31]that we have towards Allah subh will increase naturally you will feel
[29:35]satisfied with your life you'll feel like thanking Allah even more I
[29:42]wish I could thank Allah even more so this is a very
[29:50]very important point that if we change the model of evaluating what
[29:56]we have to count the little that we have the as as
[30:01]a lot this will bring to us a very high level of
[30:09]Life satisfaction now this does not mean that if you have you
[30:15]don't use or it does not mean that you now reduce your
[30:18]Ambitions in life no it's not that now now if I have
[30:23]a level of career and a salary and what I have if
[30:25]I count it as a lot I don't earn for go for
[30:28]more work hard for more no that's in its place by all
[30:33]means Islam teaches us go and work hard increase your salary try
[30:37]and bring more Comfort to yourself and to your family as well
[30:43]be generous towards your family definitely it's the mindset that's important over
[30:47]here it's the perspective that you do work with the life satisfaction
[30:51]is not based on what you have is how you perceive what
[30:56]you have if you count it as a lot that will increase
[30:59]your life satisfaction a person comes to the Imam and said the
[31:03]IM the IM finds out that he has a small house so
[31:04]and the IM knows that this person is wealthy he says why
[31:07]do you live in such a small house the man says oh
[31:13]my father was like this so the the IM tells him he
[31:18]says when I don't like to translate this says what if your
[31:25]father wasn't clever enough say if you have money use it byy
[31:30]a bigger house live in a bigger house so Islam is not
[31:32]telling us now that you are talking about contentment and about counting
[31:35]the risk as a lot that you don't use it or don't
[31:39]earn from more no go for more in a balanced way where
[31:45]you've attended to your family to your spiritual I to your seeking
[31:49]knowledge to your physical health you still have time go earn some
[31:53]more but the perspective is important the perspective is very crucial another
[32:01]point in regarding this perspective is that when we are counting so
[32:05]the first one is to count this blessing even though it might
[32:10]be little as a lot the second is to remind ourselves of
[32:15]who has given us this blessing when we have little and we
[32:25]remind ourselves that even this little that I have it is Allah
[32:30]who has given me now I feel happy because I trust Allah
[32:36]I love Allah you have faith in Allah the moment you put
[32:40]into perspective and you bring to your mind that I have this
[32:46]but this was was given to me by Allah subhah wa taala
[32:49]this increases my Tranquility I feel happy with this now don't look
[32:57]at the little risk that you may have look at the one
[33:03]who has granted you the risk change of perspective it's little one
[33:09]I count it as a lot this none this bread it's a
[33:13]lot second is I remind myself who it's coming from from which
[33:20]blessed hand it has arrived to me when it becomes when I
[33:22]see it like this I'm very happy and very satisfied with whatever
[33:27]I have whatever little I may have have I might I feel
[33:29]very very happy very content very satisfied you see how life satisfaction
[33:36]is so crucially attached to this very important point so this was
[33:42]the first tip that I wanted to give in relation to this
[33:44]idea of Life satisfaction pruh muham the second point that I'd like
[33:57]to mention in relation to increasing our life satisfaction is to do
[34:02]with comparing now comparing is something that we all do comparing ourselves
[34:09]with others in everything we compare ourselves with others in relation to
[34:16]how much we earn what car we drive the size of our
[34:18]house our Beauty how we look what we wear what what purse
[34:22]I may have what kind of socks what kind of watch I
[34:27]have we usually compare each other and what we own and you
[34:35]find that this level of comparison needs to be evaluated why because
[34:42]it is very strongly linked to how satisfied we have with we
[34:46]are with ourselves in our lives you find that many time very
[34:53]often people will evaluate their lives very poorly if you were to
[35:00]run the test life satisfaction test they will say my life I
[35:03]evaluated very very low I am not satisfied I'm not happy with
[35:08]my life question why you not happy because fulan drives the car
[35:12]better than me because this guy has a job I wish I
[35:16]had that job my job compared to his job his job is
[35:18]better she is like this and he is like that their kids
[35:22]are like this m such beautiful kids beautiful family our kids are
[35:26]different our kids are like this my kid doesn't do this his
[35:32]kid Mas so much we are con constantly comparing and this comparison
[35:35]leads us to evaluate ourselves very poorly and then we feel very
[35:43]unsatisfied with ourselves unsatisfied with our life with our career with our
[35:45]family unhappy why because of this comparison so what does Islam say
[35:58]about comparison it's very interesting you know one point I'll mention our
[36:02]Hadith in the school of the have taught us so much in
[36:09]how to live a life that is a pure and if we
[36:17]were to just follow what we have been told in the rat
[36:21]and the verses of the Quran yes the paradise and the highest
[36:25]level of proximity to Allah inshallah we will get but even in
[36:30]this life it's possible to live a very tranquil happy life by
[36:33]following what the have taught us so look what the tell us
[36:42]the first thing is that when we compare Islam tells us when
[36:48]it comes to comparing to each other always compare to those who
[36:52]are lower than you maybe you might say I always tend to
[36:58]compare I can't stop myself from comparing no problem don't stop yourself
[37:02]from comparing but who are you comparing with who are you comparing
[37:09]with the Hadith tells us numerous Hadith tells us that when you
[37:13]compare compare with those who are lower than you if you were
[37:21]to look then compare and increase your compar comparison with those compared
[37:32]to Those whom you have been blessed more than them what happens
[37:37]naturally if I look at my children I compare to those people
[37:40]who might not have children for example may Allah increase in their
[37:44]children if I have this amount of wealth I compare to those
[37:49]who don't have any wealth and suddenly you find yourself very grateful
[37:54]you find yourself very satisfied the whole issue is where you you
[37:57]you were comparing yourself to something much higher and you constantly were
[38:02]condemning yourself lowering yourself saying oh I wish I had that Which
[38:07]is higher now when you look at somebody who is lower you
[38:09]find yourself oh I have quiet a lot I suddenly feel I
[38:15]have quite a lot you see how perspective changes this is not
[38:19]looking down upon anyone this is saying that when you are comparing
[38:24]why do you always compare with above compare with d as says
[38:30]compare with someone who is lower this is from the prophet and
[38:35]the so if you were to compare with others compare those who
[38:38]are lower this will increase in your shook it will increase in
[38:41]your appreciation of the that you have when you see a person
[38:48]who is ill for example you pray for him you go visit
[38:51]him you give sodak on his behalf so he becomes better very
[38:58]soon but you also say alhamdulillah I am healthy and this increases
[39:07]you know satisfaction again you see how it's just a perspective it's
[39:11]a change of how we look at things life satisfaction goes back
[39:14]at how we look at things the worldview that we have we
[39:19]understand that in this world this is how Society Works how Allah
[39:21]has created the world there will always be people above us and
[39:23]people below us it's how Society Works our duty is to make
[39:28]sure that we help those who are lower to us but when
[39:32]it comes to how we see things how we compare to each
[39:35]other we always compare to those who are lower than us and
[39:41]this does not only matter to people around us in fact in
[39:43]Hadith we find that the Imam tells one of the companions that
[39:48]look at your situation compare it not to the poor people of
[39:50]your time compare to how the messenger of Allah was and how
[39:54]the severity of the poverty during the time of the prophet and
[39:57]how the prophet used to live compare yourself to that suddenly you
[40:01]feel I have a lot suddenly I feel very satisfied if you
[40:04]were to read the story of the how the prophet used to
[40:07]live my beloved Prophet how days would go he would not have
[40:09]anything to eat my beloved Amir nights will pass they will not
[40:17]have anything to eat at times they would go out looking for
[40:21]food they would find something very small on the way there would
[40:24]be another person who's even hungry IMI would give it to them
[40:29]and will come back home empty-handed when you look at this for
[40:33]today alhamdulillah I had tea in every single person's house I went
[40:35]to it's a lot of cup of tea for one day I'm
[40:40]very grateful alhamdulillah suddenly I feel very satisfied with my life my
[40:45]the car I drive the work that I have the family that
[40:48]I have all the Bala and the difficulties that I have I
[40:51]put down one side suddenly I I see light Life In a
[40:53]Different Light I feel much more satisfied one of the advice of
[41:04]the Prophet to Abu was this Abu says that the prophet told
[41:08]me that look at those who are lower than you don't look
[41:15]at those who are above you when you are comparing compared to
[41:18]those who are lower you know the positive impact that this can
[41:26]have on one's life is tremendous one is life satisfaction you feel
[41:28]much more satisfied with your life now that I'm comparing to others
[41:31]I don't have I feel I have a lot in my world
[41:37]alhamdulillah it would also remove jealousy jealousy has no place anymore I
[41:40]feel I own everything I'm not jealous of anyone anymore jealous is
[41:47]when I look at others and I feel oh this person has
[41:51]more than me I wish they didn't have no I'm not looking
[41:54]at anybody who's above me therefore I don't have any jealousy towards
[41:59]anybody the amount of relationship that are strengthened because we don't compare
[42:03]to others we don't go to people's houses anymore to see oh
[42:05]their kitchen looks better than my kitchen it's more cleaner than my
[42:09]kitchen I go to other people's houses or my kitchen was much
[42:14]cleaner if you were to compare if you were to compare then
[42:16]compare to those that are lower and then relationship suddenly changes the
[42:20]perspective suddenly changes this idea of competing with one another goes away
[42:28]unfortunately this is a situation many times we find ourselves competing with
[42:32]one another perhaps not directly when I when I come to you
[42:36]I say Salam to you we play cricket together and this new
[42:39]sport as well alhamd that I here mixture of tennis and B
[42:44]and table tennis but this idea of competing completely goes away and
[42:48]you see how Community comes together we're not competing anymore this comparison
[42:54]goes away so it's very important for our life satisfaction to inrease
[42:58]the have told us that if you were to compare if you
[43:03]want to analyze your situation evaluate your situation with another person another
[43:06]family another career then look at those who are lower don't look
[43:10]at those who are higher however if you were to compare with
[43:19]those who are higher then this is the point you need to
[43:25]do and remember is that that should create in you a hope
[43:30]for greater things it should create for you an ambition to aim
[43:41]higher because people ask what if I compare myself when it comes
[43:47]to spirituality yes if you are going to compare about your faith
[43:53]and how much you know then if that's going to affect your
[43:56]life satisfaction compared to those who maybe not have any faith alhamdulillah
[44:00]at least I have faith at least I'm praying at least I'm
[44:04]my hijab is proper but if you want to increase in your
[44:07]hope if you want to increase in your ambition without it affecting
[44:13]your life satisfaction compare to those who higher and then you look
[44:16]up to them to follow them again it's a perspective change it
[44:20]does not affect you in a negative way it affects you in
[44:25]a positive way it drives you forward if it's going to drive
[44:30]you forward then yes look at above and look at the scholars
[44:33]that we have look at the companions of the look how they
[44:36]you should live and you feel like I want to be like
[44:40]this and I can be like this and you need to be
[44:44]positive about this and this comparison is very beautiful and you find
[44:50]this in the story of karun the story of in the Holy
[44:55]Quran is very beautiful I'll mention the story and move on to
[44:58]the story of in the Quran mentioned inah at the end of
[45:02]the of the of the story of the chapter ofas was alive
[45:06]at the time of Mam and he was amongst the people who
[45:11]was was blessed with a lot of wealth you've heard the story
[45:13]that his treasure was so heavy that so many people would not
[45:17]be able to carry or the keys to his treasure was so
[45:19]heavy that many people would not be be able to carry the
[45:23]Quran says that one dayun comes out with all of his might
[45:26]and his wealth people come to him and advise him that this
[45:31]is not how it should be you should be SP spending your
[45:34]wealth in the right way to have wealth is not a problem
[45:39]it's what you do with the wealth is how you see the
[45:42]wealth what perspective you have on the wealth would count it as
[45:47]his own wealth I do whatever I want to do with it
[45:49]and he counted as from himself it came from my own knowledge
[45:54]after that Allah tells us the description of two groups of people
[45:58]in relation to and look how these two group of people compar
[46:05]themselves withun the first group of people when they compare themselves with
[46:10]karun they say we wish we had what karun had has when
[46:14]they look at their own selves they counted what they have as
[46:18]very little and they compared it to and they were not satisfied
[46:26]my life horrible I'm not happy with my life why look at
[46:31]he has more than me the Quran says that these people there
[46:37]were people who were attached to this world the people who are
[46:45]comparing and they feel that they have less when they compared to
[46:49]others are people they are Seekers of this world they don't realize
[46:57]that this world is just a bridge for the next World they
[47:02]want this world for itself whilst we know that this world you
[47:08]have it enjoy from it but remember that this is not temporary
[47:13]this is not lasting this is temporary this is just a bridge
[47:19]it's for you to use walk on it and go to the
[47:24]next world but these people when they compare this what the perspective
[47:29]they had why because of because they were attached to this world
[47:33]and the opposite the people in the story who told them that
[47:37]this is not how you should behave this is not how you
[47:39]should look at the situation this not your perspective in relation to
[47:45]what others [Music] have so what is with Allah is greater for
[47:54]those who believe and have and have done good deeds what how
[47:58]does Allah categorize this group of people those who were given knowledge
[48:04]you see how life satisfaction and perspective goes back to our understanding
[48:11]goes back to how we see things these people the first group
[48:18]was those who were attached to this world in comparison to these
[48:22]people they were people who had been given knowledge they saw things
[48:25]in the real way the real realize that this wealth it's important
[48:31]but it's just temporary and so when we want to work on
[48:37]our life satisfaction we need to make sure that we are people
[48:44]of knowledge that if we change our understanding of reality that we
[48:47]see the world the way it is and that if we were
[48:52]to compare We compare in a way that I understand that if
[48:54]you have more spirituality if you are more knowledgeable than me if
[48:59]you have been granted a better family a better job and a
[49:03]better car and more Beauty it is from Allah and I too
[49:08]will strive to achieve this as well and I know that it
[49:13]will come from Allah you see how in this light the comparison
[49:16]is different the comparison now is driving me forward because the way
[49:20]I see things I realize is from Allah so to summarize life
[49:27]satisfaction is very important we all wish that we were more happy
[49:29]in this life that we had satisfaction that we evaluate our life
[49:33]in a positive way we mentioned two points 10 days ago today
[49:39]we added two points one is related to how we evaluate what
[49:42]we possess the little that we own we count it as wow
[49:45]amazing and then we realize that the little that we own is
[49:49]from Allah that is very special and the second point is that
[49:53]when we compare in what we own We compare those who are
[50:00]lower than us so that this increases in our shook it increases
[50:04]our life satisfaction it removes jealousy and so on and so forth
[50:08]and if we were to compare with those who are higher this
[50:14]should lead us to want it from Allah to seek it from
[50:18]Allah and to say that I to am able to receive it
[50:23]from Allah if this person has better than me then I need
[50:27]to work hard as well and Allah will grant me if it
[50:31]is good in for me if there is in it Allah will
[50:32]grant it for me if we're able to apply these two things
[50:40]life changes it's not about moving to Finland it's about life perspective
[50:46]it's how we look at things if we change our perspective if
[50:49]we increase our understanding then we are much more happier in this
[50:54]life let us move to the m of [Music] [Music] [Music] tonight
[51:25]is the 20th of muh the 20th of the day of as
[51:31]20 days I've passed from that day that we sat together and
[51:36]mourned for what happened to AB abdah what a tragic day every
[51:41]single event on that day broke the heart of abdah it was
[51:51]a day that was filled with difficulties that was filled with pain
[51:56]not just physical pain but pain at the highest level but there
[52:04]is one pain that perhaps stands out this is the pain when
[52:11]an uncle hugs his [Music] nephew two of the nephews of IM
[52:19]Al Hussein on the day of gave their lives for IM Hussein
[52:25]both of them were son of IM one of them Wasim the
[52:38]other wasd both of them hugged IM Hussein and what a hug
[52:43]you see on one side IM Al Hussein when he comes to
[52:48]when Kim comes to IM Hussein asking for permission the makal says
[52:52]that IM Hussein grabbed his nephew and he hugged him so hard
[52:57]here remembered Imam alassan probably this kasim was raised in the house
[53:02]of Imam Al Hussein but he was a son of IM alassan
[53:06]abdah hugs him the makal says for a long time both of
[53:14]them cried what a pain for an uncle to hug his son
[53:18]who is about to go to the battlefield but I want to
[53:22]take you to another hug it has been reported that towards the
[53:25]end of the day of as as IM Al Hussein is fighting
[53:32]on the plains of carala all alone at one point the M
[53:36]says that the enemies has surrounded IM Hussein they have approached him
[53:42]from all sides towards the tent Z is watching in her hands
[53:50]is Abdullah she's holding her the hands of this little child but
[53:55]the makal says at one point I don't know why but this
[54:00]child suddenly escapes from the hand of his aunt and he starts
[54:05]running towards IM Al Hussein he runs towards IM Al Hussein and
[54:10]he reaches Imam Al Hussein at a place where Imam Al Hussein
[54:15]is about to be hit by one of the enemies just picture
[54:18]the scene the enemy raises his sword he wants to hit IM
[54:25]Al Hussein here is Abdullah coming towards his Uncle he said oh
[54:29]my uncle I shall protect you he puts his hand out the
[54:35]Mal hits with the sword it hits the hand of abdah at
[54:40]this point the Mak says Abdullah falls into the arms of IM
[54:45]Al Hussein Allah Allah what a scene IM Al Hussein is there
[54:54]injured he now finds Abdullah in his arm arms but how does
[54:59]he find Abdullah injured he hugs Abdullah Abdullah be patient but this
[55:06]is not the end of the story The Malon sends an arrow
[55:11]and here is abdulah who dies in the hands of his uncle
