[0:00][Music] What does it mean to be a human being?
[0:14]Have you ever thought of this question?
[0:17]What makes us human being?
[0:21]What qualities, what attributes, what characteristics make us human?
[0:28]Some people might say that what makes us human is that we
[0:33]are able to think to reflect.
[0:37]The famous French philosopher of the 17th century Daycart famously wrote or
[0:46]he said I think therefore I am.
[0:49]That the core of a human being is their ability to think.
[0:54]In the Arabic philosophical tradition, human being is often characterized as as
[1:04]a rational animal because the human being has the ability to reason
[1:10]and to think.
[1:10]Some might say that what makes us humans is our ability to
[1:16]speak or to communicate.
[1:18]that we have a language and many languages that we are able
[1:23]to communicate with these languages in the minds of others.
[1:29]What makes us human being is that we are able to feel.
[1:32]We have emotions or that we are able to be creative and
[1:38]to build or that we are able to imagine.
[1:44]And all of these are important aspects of what it means to
[1:49]be a human being.
[1:49]But when we come to the Quran, we find that Allah Subhanahu
[1:54]Wa Ta'ala gives us another attribute, another very important element of what
[1:59]it means to be a human being.
[2:02]The Quran reminds us that what makes us unique as human beings
[2:10]and is an essential attribute of us is that we are able
[2:15]to remember that we are able to remember that we are moral.
[2:21]We are creatures of memory and moral memory and sacred memory.
[2:27]And it is because of the importance of memory and remembrance in
[2:35]our lives.
[2:34]Think about the things that we remember.
[2:37]We remember names and we remember faces and we remember events.
[2:44]We remember and we hold dear the voice of our parents, our
[2:52]mother.
[2:52]Right?
[2:52]The voice of our mother is something that we remember often.
[2:58]It sticks with us, right?
[2:59]We remember the faces of loved ones whom we have lost.
[3:06]We remember the kindness of our friends.
[3:09]We remember tragedies and losses in our lives.
[3:11]We remember the good and the joyous.
[3:16]And we also remember the difficult and the painful.
[3:17]And sometimes even when we try to forget there is something deep
[3:26]within us that constantly reminds us.
[3:27]It pushes us to remember.
[3:28]And it is because of this essential feature of what it means
[3:32]to be a human being to remember that the Quran builds upon
[3:38]this.
[3:39]One of the central themes of the holy Quran is this idea
[3:44]of remembrance.
[3:45]In fact, the Quran, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala describes the Quran itself
[3:53]as what?
[3:52]As a reminder.
[3:55]Allah tells us in the Quran, he says the Quran, the revelation
[4:06]is described as a reminder.
[4:07]The Quran is not just a book of stories or laws or
[4:15]morals.
[4:12]In its essence, it is a reminder.
[4:16]And the Quran does not just tell us to believe.
[4:20]It tells us over and over and over again to remember.
[4:25]The prophet Muhammad sallallah.aii wasallam.
[4:35]He is described, his core role is described as a reminder and
[4:42]he is commanded by Allah to remind us.
[4:46]Allah says, so remind them here the Quran is speaking to the
[4:55]prophet.
[4:56]So remind them, remind the people your primary goal and objective is
[5:04]to remind people.
[5:04]In another verse, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, "So remind them, oh
[5:14]messenger, because in this reminder, there is benefit for those who listen,
[5:19]for the believers." So we find that the Quran itself, it describes
[5:24]itself as primarily a reminder and it describes the role of the
[5:32]prophet peace and blessings be upon him and his family as a
[5:39]reminder.
[5:37]And on the other hand, we find that the Quran contrasts remembrance
[5:45]a with what?
[5:47]With its opposite and that is forgetfulness.
[5:51]Sometimes the Quran it contrasts belief with disbelief.
[5:57]It says iman is one thing is another thing.
[6:01]Another important contrast that's made in the Quran is between remembering and
[6:08]between forgetting.
[6:09]And the Quran frames this conflict between remembering and forgetting as a
[6:17]conflict of the soul.
[6:19]It's a very important and fundamental conflict that we have between remembering
[6:24]on the one hand and forgetting on the other.
[6:30]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us it treats the Quran treats forgetting
[6:35]or forgetfulness and not as a simple lapse but possibly as a
[6:44]form of spiritual illness and spiritual disease.
[6:48]Allah warns us in the Quran.
[6:52]He says, "Do not be like those who forgot Allah.
[7:00]They forget Allah." And so the consequence of this is what?
[7:06]That they then forget themselves.
[7:08]And this is the case.
[7:12]This command and this injunction is for all people.
[7:15]One of the biggest mistakes the Quran tells us one of the
[7:22]biggest mistakes that the prophet of Allah made prophet Adam according to
[7:27]the Quran one of the biggest mistakes that he made was what
[7:31]was that he forgot Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us in the
[7:37]case of prophet Adam that Allah made a covenant with prophet Adam
[7:50]and prophet Adam forgoti and as a result prophet Adam was considered
[8:02]among those prophets who is not among the best of the prophets
[8:07]or the greatest of the prophets.
[8:09]If you look in Islamic theology, our theologians, they have c categorized
[8:15]the prophets on different levels.
[8:17]There is the best of all of the prophets and the messengers.
[8:24]There is a particular category.
[8:24]They are known as are the prophets of fortitude and resilience and
[8:33]strength.
[8:32]And they are identified as five prophets.
[8:35]From all of the prophets that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has sent
[8:41]to mankind to humankind five of them are considered as who are
[8:48]these they are no Ibraim Mosa and Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wasallam.
[8:57]Adam could have been among but according to the Quran because he
[9:03]forgot because he forgot his instruction and his responsibility the result of
[9:13]this was that he would he was excluded from this category.
[9:19]So here when we talk about the Quran talks about forgetfulness, forgetfulness
[9:23]is seen not just as a small lapse.
[9:26]You know sometimes when we think about forgetfulness in our day-to-day lives,
[9:31]you think about maybe forgetting your keys.
[9:34]How many of us have forgotten our keys?
[9:37]Or maybe more relevant, how many of us have forgotten our phones,
[9:42]right?
[9:43]you forget uh you know your your spouse asks you to go
[9:49]to the grocery store and to purchase some items.
[9:52]You go and you purchase the items.
[9:54]When you come home, he or she reminds you that you forgot
[9:57]something.
[9:57]And it's usually not a big deal.
[10:00]We say, "Okay, I forgot." It's a small lapse.
[10:04]But the Quran here tells us that sometimes forgetfulness is not just
[10:09]seen as a small lapse.
[10:11]That forgetfulness can cause self-alienation.
[10:14]When we forget Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and we forget those things
[10:20]that are important, we forget our very own identity.
[10:28]They forget themselves because our recognition of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, our
[10:35]remembrance of Allah is tied to our remembrance of ourselves.
[10:39]This is how we understand the hadith.
[10:47]The one who knows him or herself recognizes him or herself will
[10:54]know his or her Lord.
[10:55]Similarly, the Quran says if you remember Allah and you remember the
[10:59]truth, then you remember yourself.
[11:01]But if you forget Allah and you forget the truth, then you
[11:05]forget your very self.
[11:07]You lose your way.
[11:09]Allah describes the wrongdoers, the evildoers.
[11:13]He says, "One of the tactics ofl of Satan is to keep
[11:24]us preoccupied.
[11:25]Is to keep us so busy with trivial things that we forget
[11:32]the important things.
[11:33]And it gets to a point where we can get overwhelmed.
[11:38]Look at our current life.
[11:42]Look at our interactions on social media.
[11:45]Look at the information overload that we receive.
[11:51]We're constantly scrolling and information, looking at information over and over, and
[11:56]we're preoccupied with our work and with our income and with our
[12:00]family and with our lives to the point where we forget those
[12:03]things that are important.
[12:06]And this is one of the tactics of of Satan has taken
[12:16]hold of them and made them forget the remembrance of Allah.
[12:19]This is why the Quran comes and it constantly emphasizes the importance
[12:27]of remembrance.
[12:25]Tells us don't forget.
[12:28]Even if the world is trying to make you forget or to
[12:32]remember those things that are trivial, do not forget those things that
[12:38]are important.
[12:37]Because when you forget those things that are important, you forget your
[12:42]very self and your very your own identity.
[12:44]So what is this remembrance that the Quran keeps on repeating over
[12:52]and over and over again?
[12:53]We can examine a the idea of remembrance in several parts.
[12:58]When we examine the Quran, we find several points.
[13:00]Number one, we find that aik remembrance is one of the most
[13:09]often repeated commands of the Quran.
[13:10]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us to pray, to fast, to believe,
[13:16]but more frequently Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us to remember, not
[13:21]to forget.
[13:26]Oh you who believe, remember Allah with much remembrance.
[13:30]And here the key is what is we are expected to remember
[13:38]Allah not just occasionally not just when I have time not just
[13:46]when the moment is right but we are expected to remember Allah
[13:51]in abundance to always remember God.
[13:59]The idea is that we develop a heart that constantly remembers God's
[14:07]name.
[14:07]That we remember Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in all cases and in
[14:14]all times.
[14:13]When we are happy, we remember Allah.
[14:16]When we are sad, we remember Allah.
[14:21]In moments of clarity, I remember Allah.
[14:25]In moments of confusion, I remember Allah in all times.
[14:28]And this is the objective.
[14:30]The hadiths, the traditions of the prophet and even their duas, they
[14:39]push us towards this ultimate objective that our objective should be that
[14:46]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is at the forefront of all of our
[14:49]thoughts, all of our activities, everything that we do, Allah subhanana wa
[14:56]ta'ala is included.
[14:56]Look at the beautiful dua of dua and tonight is Thursday night.
[15:05]It's recommended to recite.
[15:07]Imam in this very beautiful dua he gives us a very powerful
[15:12]statement.
[15:12]Very powerful statement he pleased to Allah.
[15:15]He says my lord make me among those Make me, oh Allah,
[15:29]make me among those.
[15:29]Give me the success to build my time around you.
[15:36]To construct my entire life, my hours of the day and of
[15:42]the night around your remembrance.
[15:44]Do not let me be someone who is heedless, who forgets, who
[15:52]remembers you only in certain times.
[15:54]Sometimes we find ourselves remembering Allah only in certain moments when I
[15:58]face difficulty.
[16:01]I face illness or I face loss, I lose a loved one
[16:11]or my health for instance or I lose money or I find
[16:13]myself in other difficult circumstances and suddenly I remember Allah and I
[16:19]turn to Allah.
[16:21]I say, "Oh Allah, where are you?
[16:23]I'm sick.
[16:25]Heal me.
[16:23]My friend is sick.
[16:26]Give them health.
[16:28]Oh Allah, I have lost this.
[16:29]I have lost that." Often times we find ourselves remembering Allah only
[16:33]in moments of difficulty and pain.
[16:36]But when things are going smooth, when I have a job, when
[16:43]I have an income, when I have health, when I have wealth,
[16:45]when things are going well, I tend to forget Allah subhanahu wa
[16:49]ta'ala.
[16:50]Im Ali Alisam here he teaches us.
[16:53]He says, "My Lord, make all of my times, all of my
[16:59]hours of the day and of the night, build it, construct it."
[17:04]You know, when you look at the construction of a building or
[17:10]a house, there's a lot that goes into the construction of a
[17:13]building.
[17:14]A lot of energy, a lot of time, a lot of resources.
[17:17]It's not only what you see on the outside.
[17:22]When you see a building is being built, normally if we're passing
[17:27]by, we only see the outside construction.
[17:29]But the outside construction or the skeleton of the building or the
[17:34]foundations are only one part.
[17:38]There has to be a lot more effort placed into constructing a
[17:42]building.
[17:44]Imm says put all put your remembrance in every aspect of constructing
[17:50]my day and my night.
[17:54]filled with your remembrance.
[17:54]And when we remember Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, this is not a
[18:01]one-way act.
[18:03]By the way, the Quran gives us a very powerful key.
[18:06]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, he says, "If you want me to remember
[18:12]you at all times, who among us does not want Allah to
[18:17]remember us at all times?
[18:23]Of course, we all want Allah to remember us in every moment.
[18:27]The Quran gives us a very simple formula.
[18:30]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, "Remember me." Allah says, "Remember me and
[18:39]I will remember you." It's a simple formula.
[18:44]And when Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala remembers us, then it doesn't matter
[18:51]what we face in life.
[18:51]It doesn't matter what the circumstances are.
[18:55]If Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is on your side, this is what
[19:00]we see in the world today.
[19:01]The world now is a devastated world.
[19:05]There is much tragedy.
[19:07]There is oppression.
[19:08]There is injustice.
[19:10]There is a a genocide happening as we speak.
[19:12]There are genocidal regimes who are bloodthirsty, who wish to inflict destruction
[19:19]and death and devastation on the world.
[19:22]And this is what we see every day.
[19:25]Yet, what gives those victims of oppression, what gives them strength?
[19:30]And we've all seen this.
[19:34]We've all seen videos and clips of those who under the most
[19:38]extreme forms of death and destruction and devastation, they do not forget
[19:43]Allah.
[19:45]They remember Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
[19:48]And because they remember Allah, Allah is with Allah is with them.
[19:53]And when we remember Allah, then victory and strength is always on
[19:58]our side.
[19:59]Even if we lose material, if we experience material loss, yet when
[20:05]we remember Allah and we are with Allah, Allah is with us
[20:10]and thus we do not lose ourselves.
[20:12]We do not lose our very foundations.
[20:16]So number one, we find that this command of Allah subhanahu wa
[20:22]ta'ala to constantly remember him.
[20:24]Number one.
[20:26]Number two, we find that even our ritual acts, our acts of
[20:30]worship are built around the objective of remembrance.
[20:36]The Quran embeds remembrance into every act of worship.
[20:40]Take the example of prayer.
[20:42]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says that prayer is a form of remembrance.
[20:50]The Quran says, "So establish prayer for my remembrance.
[20:56]One of the advantages of prayer and why we pray five times
[21:01]a day.
[21:03]Why do we not pray once a day or once a week?
[21:07]There are some who part of their religious tradition is to pray
[21:10]once a week maybe or maybe once a day.
[21:13]Why do we pray five times a day?
[21:16]And those five prayers are spread out throughout the day from even
[21:20]before the sun rises in the morning throughout the entire day until
[21:27]after the sun sets.
[21:27]Why do we do this?
[21:28]Because prayer, one aspect of prayer is that it is a form
[21:33]of remembrance.
[21:34]It connects us to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala consistently throughout the day.
[21:38]This is why it's important for us to establish and to maintain
[21:41]this prayer and to pray on time.
[21:44]Yes, you know we have expanded times.
[21:51]We know that for instance, we have from the break of dawn
[21:54]until sunrise.
[21:55]Depending on where you are in the world and what time it
[21:57]is, it could be around an hour, hour and a half.
[22:01]We have an expanded t time between and for instance to pray
[22:04]our and prayers several hours.
[22:09]Sometimes some of us we look at this and we say well
[22:11]I you know I have six more hours until time.
[22:13]I don't have to pray now.
[22:18]I have a I have an interview right now.
[22:20]I have a meeting right now.
[22:21]I have something else to do.
[22:23]I still have time.
[22:23]I'll pray in four or five or 6 hours.
[22:26]Technically, yes, you have that expanded time.
[22:29]But the whole point of praying on time is that we have
[22:35]a consistent schedule of remembering Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and that has
[22:39]to be our priority that we prioritize this relationship and this connection
[22:47]with Allah.
[22:44]We find that even post prayer if we examine the Quran the
[22:51]Quran does not just tell us that the salah the prayer itself
[22:53]is a form of remembrance.
[22:59]Even post prayer Allah tells us And even when you complete the
[23:08]prayer, then remember Allah while standing and while sitting and while lying
[23:14]down.
[23:12]It's an extension.
[23:15]Remembrance is an extension even of the formal act of prayer.
[23:20]This is why it's important for us to remember Allah subhanahu wa
[23:24]ta'ala even outside of prayer.
[23:25]One of the very beautiful acts that we have that we have
[23:31]been given a treasure from the school of isam.
[23:37]The beautiful story in which he gifts this to as a way
[23:46]to empower her to give her strength in her daily routines.
[23:51]And he reminds her he says when you are feeling down when
[23:58]you are feeling hopeless when you are feeling weak remember Allah subhanahu
[24:03]wa ta'ala with this 34 times Allahbar 33 times alhamdulillah 33 times
[24:11]subhan allah it is recommended for us in fact we have some
[24:17]of the hadith from the imams they tell us that when the
[24:19]Quran says remember God in abundance plentifully.
[24:28]Some of the they define they say that one way in order
[24:34]to accomplish this act to be considered among those who remember Allah
[24:39]abundantly is by performing 500 times after each of the daily prayers.
[24:47]We have five prayers.
[24:51]after each of the daily prayers 100 of that makes 500 a
[24:55]day.
[24:55]If we do this then we will be counted among those who
[25:02]remember Allah abundantly according to the imams that we continue this even
[25:07]in other acts of worship when Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala discusses the
[25:12]the pilgrimage he says when you complete the day of remember Allah
[25:23]in the whole objective perspective of ritual of acts of worship is
[25:30]that it connects us with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
[25:32]It's not just about engaging in physical movements.
[25:36]There might be some physical movements that might be better to engage
[25:41]in you know you can go and you can take yoga classes
[25:45]might be more beneficial as physical movements.
[25:48]The idea is not just to bow and prostrate.
[25:49]The idea is through these acts of worship we maintain a connection
[25:57]with Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
[26:03]Just as an anchor allows a ship not to drift, you can
[26:11]have a massive ship, a cruise ship or you know many other
[26:19]of those massive ships.
[26:18]And when that ship stops, what is the thing that does not
[26:25]allow it to drift into the water?
[26:27]It has an anchor.
[26:27]That anchor it keeps it from drifting away.
[26:31]In the same way, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has infused with our
[26:34]acts of worship and our rituals an anchor and that is his
[26:40]remembrance.
[26:41]It keeps us in place so that we do not drift far
[26:43]away from our purpose and our objective.
[26:45]This is what does.
[26:47]So this is number two.
[26:49]Number three, we find that the Quran speaks of of remembrance as
[26:57]a form of healing and as a form of stability.
[27:00]Life can be difficult sometimes.
[27:06]No, we face challenges.
[27:07]We face trials and tribulations and it can be difficult.
[27:15]Sometimes it feels too much especially when we face various challenges in
[27:20]different areas.
[27:20]Sometimes it can feel very weighty on our shoulders life.
[27:24]And this is the case with everyone.
[27:27]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tests us all in various ways.
[27:32]The Quran here gives us a remedy.
[27:35]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tells us that when life is difficult, when
[27:38]life seems to be too much, don't necessarily work towards fixing things.
[27:44]One of the very first thing that you should do is what?
[27:48]Is to remember Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
[27:51]In remembering Allah, hearts find ease.
[27:55]And this is the Quran.
[27:55]The Quran says, Those who believe and their hearts they find peace,
[28:12]they find rest in what?
[28:16]In remembering Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.
[28:19]Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah, do hearts find rest.
[28:24]You know, when a child is afraid, one of the things that
[28:29]a child will do when they're afraid instinctively is to call out
[28:33]the name of their father or their mother.
[28:35]Right?
[28:35]Those of you who have young children, you've probably seen this.
[28:39]A child is afraid instinctively he or she will call out mama,
[28:45]baba.
[28:45]This is what this is a reaction because they find refuge in
[28:51]their parents.
[28:51]They find comfort in their parents because they know that their parents
[28:54]will protect them from those things that they fear.
[28:59]In a similar way, a believer is someone who when they are
[29:06]afraid, when they face difficulty and challenge, they turn to Allah and
[29:12]they say y my lord, my master, we turn to Allah subhana
[29:17]wa tala because Allah is our refuge.
[29:21]When we face storms in our lives, the thing that calms down
[29:27]that storm is our remembrance and our connection to Allah subhanahu wa
[29:34]ta'ala.
[29:33]So this is what the Quran tells us.
[29:38]It tells us that in remembering Allah, our hearts find ease.
[29:41]Maybe our problem may not be solved.
[29:44]Maybe if I turn to Allah, it may not be that my
[29:49]problem is immediately solved.
[29:51]But what happens when we connect to Allah during times of distress
[29:58]and difficulty and we do so sincerely, Allah instills ease in our
[30:04]hearts.
[30:03]He gives us the power and the comfort to overcome that difficulty.
[30:08]So this is another aspect of in the Quran.
[30:13]Another very important aspect of according to the Quran is that remembrance
[30:20]of Allah gives us an opportunity to reflect and to think and
[30:25]to reflect on those things that are important to reflect on truth
[30:34]to reflect on history.
[30:34]The Quran does not limit remembrance just to phrases that we recite
[30:40]or rituals that we engage in.
[30:47]It also invites deep reflection.
[30:48]The Quran always reminds us think, ponder, reflect.
[30:54]Right?
[30:58]This is one of our objectives.
[31:00]And when we remember especially the Quran gives us the example of
[31:09]thinking about history and remembering history.
[31:10]Allah subhana wa ta'ala commands his prophet.
[31:13]He says remind them of the days of God.
[31:21]Remind your community remind your community of that which is sacred and
[31:27]that which is important.
[31:25]In another verse, Allah says, "Many ways of life have passed before
[31:36]you.
[31:38]So travel through the earth and see the outcomes of those before
[31:43]you." The Quran here reminds us, it instructs us, it tells us,
[31:47]"Go and travel.
[31:48]When you travel, you will go and you will see the example
[31:54]and the impact of those who came before you.
[31:57]We are not the first people to live on this earth, nor
[32:02]will we be the last.
[32:03]How many generations have come before us?
[32:08]Civilizations, empires, billions and billions of people.
[32:14]Only God knows how many people have come before us.
[32:16]And only God knows how many people will come after us.
[32:20]The Quran reminds us, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, "Do not only
[32:24]proceed forward, but make sure to look back as well." It's kind
[32:28]of like when you're driving a car.
[32:29]When you drive a car, you drive looking through the front windshield,
[32:35]right?
[32:36]But you have a rear view mirror.
[32:38]What is the point of the rear view mirror?
[32:39]The point of the rearview mirror is for you to also look
[32:44]back because it's not only important just to drive forward.
[32:47]You also have to look back, reflect, see what's behind you.
[32:50]See what came before you.
[32:53]When the Quran speaks of Pharaoh, for instance, or those who came
[33:00]before us, the objective is not just to give us a history
[33:05]lesson.
[33:04]Sometimes in school we learn history for the sake of history.
[33:10]Which was the first civilization?
[33:13]What did the people in ancient Egypt do?
[33:16]What did the people in Babylon do?
[33:21]When did people develop language?
[33:22]What was their first language?
[33:24]To learn history for the sake of history.
[33:26]This is important.
[33:26]The Quran tells us it's important to know history.
[33:31]But it's important to know history in order to understand the impact,
[33:34]the ways of those who came before you and their impact.
[33:37]How did they live their lives?
[33:41]What did they do and what did they not do?
[33:45]When the Quran speaks extensively about Pharaoh, what is the objective?
[33:49]Why does Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala tell us so much about Pharaoh?
[33:52]Just so that we learn what his name was and when he
[33:56]lived and how he looked?
[33:58]No.
[33:58]Because Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wants to give us a lesson here.
[34:04]When we remember that past, when we reflect on that past, we
[34:07]learn a lesson.
[34:09]We learn the lesson of what it means to transgress against God.
[34:13]We learn the lesson of what it means to think that you
[34:17]are invincible.
[34:18]And these lessons are relevant for us today because in every day,
[34:24]in every age, there is a Pharaoh.
[34:26]Brothers and sisters, Pharaoh was not just a historical figure.
[34:29]Allah subhana wa ta'ala says that Pharaoh he engaged in supremacy.
[34:40]He considered himself to be he told people I am your lord
[34:44]and that he thought that he was invincible that he could do
[34:51]whatever he wanted to do without accountability.
[34:54]But Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala reminds him and he reminds his community
[35:00]and he reminds us that under the jurisdiction of God, no one
[35:05]other than Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is invincible and that just as
[35:11]there was a pharaoh back then, there is a pharaoh today and
[35:13]there is a pharaoh in every moment.
[35:16]Again, look at our current state.
[35:20]You find nations and regimes and people who because they have certain
[35:24]weapons or certain resources, they believe that they are invincible, that they
[35:29]can do whatever they want and get away with it.
[35:31]But Allah subhana wa ta'ala gives us this lesson tells us that
[35:40]arrogance is only met with what?
[35:42]With humiliation.
[35:42]And so here the lesson of learning history and remembering history, reflecting
[35:49]on the past is that we learn lessons for today.
[35:56]We remember those who stood on the path of goodness and truth
[36:01]and what they did and those who stood on the path of
[36:07]evil and corruption and what they did.
[36:09]And it presents us with a choice to make because in every
[36:16]day and age there are those who represent truth and goodness and
[36:19]there are those who represent evil and corruption.
[36:22]And we have to make an important decision.
[36:25]We have to ask ourselves which side will we stand on?
[36:30]Will we stand on the side of injustice and oppression or will
[36:34]we stand on the side of truth and justice and morality and
[36:39]goodness?
[36:38]And this is why we remember.
[36:42]This is why every year time and time again we remember the
[36:48]tragedy of and the tragedy of Kbalah.
[36:51]In remembering Imam Hussein and in remembering his stand, we are engaging
[36:59]in sacred remembrance because we remember him not just because of his
[37:05]personality and who he was as an individual and whose son and
[37:11]whose whose son he was, whose father he was, whose husband he
[37:14]was, whose grandson he was.
[37:15]We remember him because of what he stood for.
[37:19]And this is the importance of remembering history because some people will
[37:24]tell you why do you keep remembering 1,400 years every year you
[37:28]sit down and you remember and you mourn and you grieve.
[37:32]Let the past be in the past.
[37:34]What happened in the past even in the past.
[37:37]Why do we keep remembering?
[37:41]Because in remembering there are lessons for us.
[37:43]When we reflect on history and we reflect on what it represents,
[37:49]it gives us a lesson for today.
[37:52]We learn something about our responsibility and our place in the world
[37:57]today.
[37:58]And so in reflecting on history, in remembering history, this is also
[38:07]a sacred form of remembrance.
[38:08]And yet there is another form of remembrance and that is through
[38:15]grief, through sadness.
[38:16]Sometimes the situation is so important, it is so sacred that there
[38:24]are no words to describe it.
[38:25]It comes from the heart and it expresses itself through grief through
[38:29]grief and through weeping and crying.
[38:33]Allah subhana wa ta'ala gives us the example.
[38:36]This example in fact in the Quran is reflecting on some Christians
[38:40]and Jews during the time of the prophet.
[38:43]Allah subhana wa ta'ala he says regarding some of them he says
[38:49]some of them they understand and they recognize the truth and the
[38:54]evidence for this the Quran says when they hear the truth that
[39:07]the messenger speaks that is revealed to the messenger the Quran says
[39:11]you find that their eyes overflow with tears.
[39:16]Why?
[39:17]Because they recognize this is truth.
[39:20]Sometimes when the issue is so sacred, it cannot be described in
[39:30]words.
[39:28]It can only be expressed in emotions.
[39:34]It can only be expressed through the grief and the tears that
[39:39]we express.
[39:39]Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala in speaking about the prophets and the messengers.
[39:43]Listen to this verse brothers and sisters.
[39:45]Very beautiful.
[39:47]Allah subhana t says Allahh here is speaking about the heirs of
[40:05]the prophets, the messengers, the greatest of prophets, the descendants of the
[40:15]prophets.
[40:16]What does how does he describe them?
[40:16]He says, "When the verses of the Almighty God are recited upon
[40:29]them, they fall in prostration and in weeping and tears.
[40:35]They hear the truth.
[40:38]They hear the words of God.
[40:40]And this impacts them and they break down.
[40:43]They fall into prostration into sujud.
[40:46]They begin to weep.
[40:50]They begin to cry.
[40:50]The Quran describes those whose hearts are pure that when they hear
[40:54]the truth, their hearts begin to tremble.
[40:58]It shakes something within them because they understand the power of that
[41:06]truth.
[41:05]It shakes their very core.
[41:08]In these moments when something is so great, these tears themselves are
[41:17]a form of sacred remembrance.
[41:19]They are the soul's reaction and recognition and response to divine truth.
[41:26]And this is why we find that even in the most difficult
[41:31]of times, Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala gives us some examples of prophets
[41:35]and messengers that even sometimes in the most difficult of times when
[41:40]they would experience grief and sadness, they would remember Allah.
[41:46]The Quran gives us the example of prophet Yakubai.
[41:51]Prophet Yub who was the father of prophet Ysef.
[41:55]And we know the story of prophet Ysef.
[41:58]He's a small child.
[42:01]He is beloved to his father, Prophet Yakub.
[42:04]And his brothers, they deceive him.
[42:08]His own blood brothers.
[42:09]They deceive their father.
[42:13]They take Ysef away from their father.
[42:14]And they throw him in the well and they leave him for
[42:20]dead.
[42:20]And there is that long separation from prophet Yah and his son
[42:25]prophet Ysef Ali.
[42:27]And the Quran describes that grief and that sadness.
[42:31]Some ah hadith say for 40 years.
[42:34]40 years they were separated.
[42:37]And prophet used to grieve and he would weep and he would
[42:43]cry every day for the loss of his son Ysef.
[42:47]So much so that the Quran says that prophet became blind because
[42:54]of how much he cried.
[43:00]His eyes became blind.
[43:03]He wept so much the sadness and grief and longing for his
[43:07]separation from his own son that it broke him down.
[43:13]He would weep to the point in which he became blind.
[43:18]Yet the Quran here reminds us that this grief and this crying
[43:22]was not merely personal.
[43:23]It was not just the grief of a father for his son.
[43:29]It was the grief that was tied to divine truth.
[43:33]And this is why prophet even in this most difficult moment of
[43:38]sadness he did not forget Allah.
[43:43]And he says He wept.
[43:48]He cried.
[43:50]But he says, "I only proclaim my sadness, my immense and devastating
[43:59]sadness and complaint to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala." This is this is
[44:06]in the moment of sadness and in a moment of difficulty.
[44:12]Because when grief is connected to divine truth, then it becomes a
[44:17]sacred act brothers and sisters when sa sadness and grief when it's
[44:21]connected to divine truth.
[44:24]It becomes sacred.
[44:24]It becomes a sacred form of remembrance because what it means is
[44:29]that when I am sad over the loss of someone who is
[44:34]connected to the truth, I am not sad simply as a form
[44:40]of sentiment for their loss.
[44:40]It is a response to say that I will not let the
[44:46]truth that that person stood for be lost.
[44:49]And this is why we find that grief and sadness for Aba
[44:55]Abdah Hussein is so powerful.
[44:58]Because Imam Hussein, he represents the truth.
[45:03]Because I im Hussein was ready to give everything for the sake
[45:12]of God.
[45:14]Im Hussein says, "I'm ready to give up everything.
[45:28]I am ready to sacrifice my family and my children and my
[45:33]life for you, oh Allah." This was his connection to Allah subhanahu
[45:37]wa ta'ala.
[45:38]And this is why the imams they teach us that when we
[45:47]grieve forbah hussein when we cry for abdah hussein this is a
[45:50]sacred act it's an act of worship it's an act of sacred
[45:53]remembrance when we cry for abdah the tears that we shed forbdah
[46:02]hussein are tears that are grounded in our connection and our love
[46:07]for Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala Because im Hussein he represents Allah.
[46:11]Because Imam Hussein represents the truth.
[46:14]When we gather together, when we come together in majus commemorating Aba
[46:20]Abdah Hussein, we are doing that which the greatest of prophets and
[46:28]messengers and righteous people before us did.
[46:33]The very first melus, huh?
[46:36]The very first majus that was held was held by that was
[46:45]the very first majus for Abdah Hussein.
[46:48]When Imam Hussein was born, he was a newborn child.
[46:53]Imam Hussein had just been born.
[46:59]The tradition tells us that Fatim Zah she brings forward Imam Hussein
[47:05]as a newborn child.
[47:05]She places him in the arms and in the hands of his
[47:12]grandfather.
[47:16]He carries Imam Hussein in his arms.
[47:23]You can imagine the joy, the happiness that Rasool Allah had that
[47:27]this was his beloved grandson who was being placed in his arms.
[47:32]Asoolah is holding him.
[47:36]He is embracing him and kissing him.
[47:38]Suddenly that joy it turns into sadness and grief.
[47:42]The prophet he pauses.
[47:45]He stops and his smile it turns into sadness into tears that
[47:53]become come down from his eyes onto his face.
[47:56]Fatah she turns to him.
[47:59]She says, "My dear father, why are you crying?
[48:03]Is something wrong with him?
[48:05]Did you find something to be wrong with him?" He says, "My
[48:10]dear daughter Fatima, he just descended upon me." And he asked me,
[48:18]he says, "Yeah, do you love this grandson of yours, Hussein?" I
[48:23]said, "Yes, yeah, of course I love him with all my heart."
[48:28]He turns to he says this community of yours those who claim
[48:36]to follow you they will massacre him they will kill this beloved
[48:44]grandson of yours.
[48:43]So Allah he begins to weep.
[48:48]He begins to cry and he holds him close.
[48:48]Imam Hussein he had a very special connection to Allah.
[48:55]Allah considered Hussein to be part of him.
[48:58]He would often say Hussein Hussein.
[49:01]Hussein is from me and I am from Hussein.
[49:06]Husse may Allah love the one who loves Hussein.
[49:12]We know that Allah would spend considerable time with Imam Hussein when
[49:17]he was growing up.
[49:20]The tradition famous tradition tells us that even when the prophet would
[49:24]be in prayer one day Allah is leading the congregation in prayer
[49:28]and at the moment of sujud he prolongs his sujud more than
[49:36]usual.
[49:35]After the prayer some of his companions they come to him and
[49:41]they ask him they say Allah today in our prayer you prolonged
[49:45]your sujud what happened did you receive revelation during sujudas he says
[49:52]no my beloved grandson Hussein during prayer he came and he climbed
[49:58]on my back and so I wanted to give him permission and
[50:00]the comfort to stay for as long as he wanted on my
[50:05]back that relationship ship would continue with Allah.
[50:07]Rasool Allah one day is standing on the member and he is
[50:13]speaking to the community in the masjid and from the entrance enters
[50:16]Hussein little Hussein he is running.
[50:19]The tradition says that his clothing was long and because it it
[50:22]was long Hussein he tripped and he fell onto his clothing.
[50:29]rooed his sermon in the middle.
[50:31]He ran down from the mim and he carried Imam Hussein and
[50:37]he brought him forward.
[50:38]They told him, "Yahool Allah, what happened?" He did not get hurt.
[50:42]Nothing happened to him.
[50:45]He said, "When I saw Hussein fall on the ground, I felt
[50:47]as though my heart fell." Allahbar.
[50:51]I want to take you to one more time when Allah during
[50:58]his final moments he had become ill and weak.
[51:02]He was on his bed and he had completely lost all of
[51:08]his strength.
[51:10]Had he had become weak.
[51:10]He turns to Amir who was close to him at the time.
[51:15]He tells him, "Yeah, bring my beloved sons Hassan and Hussein." Im
[51:21]Ali Alisam.
[51:23]He brings forward Imm Hassan and Imam Hussein children at the time.
[51:26]He brings them forward.
[51:30]The prophet says, "Bring them.
[51:32]Bring them close to me.
[51:32]I want to embrace them and kiss them.
[51:36]They come close to him." They embrace him.
[51:39]Each one on one side.
[51:42]Al Hassan on one side.
[51:42]He is on the chest of Allah.
[51:44]Al Hussein on the other side.
[51:47]He is on the chest of Allah.
[51:49]They are embracing him.
[51:50]The tradition says that Allah during these moments he fell asleep.
[51:57]So Imam Ali he saw that Allah fell asleep.
[51:57]So he took Imam Hassan and I im Hussein aside.
[52:00]When Rasool Allah opened his eyes, he saw that they were not
[52:06]there with him.
[52:05]He called out.
[52:07]He said, "Oh Abdul Hassan, where are my sons?
[52:10]Where are Hassan and Hussein?" Imam Ali he responded.
[52:12]He said yahoo Allah I saw you in this state in this
[52:17]difficult state.
[52:16]So I took them aside so that you do not feel any
[52:21]other pain and hardship.
[52:25]He told him bring them forward.
[52:27]Bring them.
[52:26]I want to be able to smell them.
[52:30]I want to be able to embrace them.
[52:32]I want to be able to kiss them.
[52:34][Music] During those final moments of yours, you wanted Hussein and Hussein
[52:44]had embraced your chest.
[52:44]Yahoo Allah.
[52:46]Yahoo Allah.
[52:46]This beloved Hussein of yours on the day of Ashur, someone else
[52:53]would also be sitting on his chest on that day.
