[0:00][Music] we are gathered here today on this sad occasion to commemorate
[0:16]the death of say the Fatima the daughter of our beloved Prophet
[0:21]peace be upon him and peace be upon the hill bait even
[0:27]though her life was cut short as we heard yesterday from in
[0:31]an articulate speech of her horrendous demise from our brother ayaan caused
[0:37]me by the cruel tyrants and oppressors of her time her story
[0:45]and her essence has still managed to reach us today 1400 years
[0:49]later now one might ponder on this last sentence and think about
[0:54]how is it that her message and her story has made it
[1:00]through the pages of history and it is still very much alive
[1:03]and thriving one might also ponder over what and how the future
[1:11]of her message and her story might be and how will it
[1:13]be able to make it through to our upcoming generations well our
[1:18]essence and stories start to fade away away as it does with
[1:23]so many great personalities that have lived even amongst our times and
[1:27]have now seemed to only be mentioned in the history books and
[1:31]our classrooms how have these few personalities that'll bathe stood the test
[1:39]of time one of the few reasons we would cut would come
[1:46]to our minds would be that that their selflessness their piety their
[1:52]charity and their sacrifice for Allah these are all great virtues and
[1:56]values that we would love to enact passionately within our own lives
[2:03]but somehow we seem to easily neglect in our everyday lives so
[2:07]today my talk will be focused on committing one of the great
[2:15]unspoken teachings of the El Obeid community building is a field of
[2:19]practices directed towards the creation or enhancement of community among individuals within
[2:26]a regional area or with a common interest the three topics I
[2:31]would like to talk about a little under community building is how
[2:35]how have we as a community being successful in the past what
[2:41]are some of the great achievements of our community today and lastly
[2:45]touch upon the challenges that we face together in the future so
[2:49]let's begin with a sulle watt of the loudest of your voices
[2:58]so as I was growing up one of the key things I
[3:06]first noticed was that whenever we were at a mosque or a
[3:08]seniya or a place of worship we would treat the place with
[3:12]a different level of respect by this I mean we would do
[3:15]our best to be engaged and stay focused on prayer or the
[3:18]speaker and if any distractions were to arise we would leave the
[3:24]holy place of worship so we don't distract others around us if
[3:28]we were to talk we would speak with softer voices when when
[3:36]the program is going on another thing that I learned was that
[3:39]older people of the community would be given a certain type of
[3:43]respect from the younger crowd as we would set up or leave
[3:49]the the chairs or the walls for them to sit on for
[3:52]their comfort now again you guys might start thinking thinking well this
[3:57]is all really trivial but indeed it is not these are some
[4:02]of the things that actually make us who we are this allows
[4:05]us and helps us to create a sense of organization within us
[4:09]the Prophet peace be upon him said he is not of us
[4:15]who does not have mercy on young children nor honor the elderly
[4:20]another key successful achievements of our community are the love and passion
[4:24]that we give to celebrating and commemorating the a low base these
[4:30]commemorations again might start to seem very routine and pretty much the
[4:35]same every year and this and this does make some of us
[4:41]think what is the point of all of this there is no
[4:43]sense of growth that I feel in doing these rituals to answer
[4:50]this concern the human in the Koran the human is being called
[4:55]an insan a term that shares the same linguistic root as the
[5:03]verb to forget man's basic tendency to forget illustrated in the continuing
[5:12]account of creation is given in the Quran so the shortcoming built
[5:18]would then the human being can only be overcome by routinely reminding
[5:23]and practicing these rituals that have been passed on to us generation
[5:27]by generation say the Fatima also beautifully sums this up by saying
[5:32]God provided the daily prayer to make to make you pure from
[5:40]pride I also do not recommend to blindly practice them but as
[5:46]we learn to practice them we also have to ask questions as
[5:51]to what is the significance of practicing them the second concern as
[5:55]to feeling a sense of growth and achievement is also very important
[5:59]and this can be reached by building relations with the different diverse
[6:05]members of our community and hearing and learning from their experiences conclusively
[6:14]these commemorations and gatherings are our strength and source of media of
[6:19]education about our beloved Ahlul Bayt peace be upon them so another
[6:28]thing I witnessed myself with in our community is the sense of
[6:33]giving in the name of Allah and a little base say the
[6:38]Fatima eloquently says God prescribed charity for purification of the soul and
[6:44]for the increase of sustenance now one might think I'm only referring
[6:49]to monetary donation their charity while those are very important and a
[6:55]very high level of good one can bring to our can bring
[7:00]to our community but here I am referring to our time to
[7:04]this community as well how can we give time in our busy
[7:10]lives that we must go to school we must then go to
[7:12]university and then from University we must end up in the workforce
[7:19]and this feels like we actually have no time and but this
[7:21]has taught me that we will always be busy with our worldly
[7:28]affairs and according to this track that I have laid laid out
[7:30]we probably will never be able to have time for anything else
[7:34]therefore to tackle this we must make time and put in the
[7:41]effort to creating a healthy and welcoming environment in our community and
[7:45]then so another thing I also learned when I came here to
[7:52]Canada was that they always speak about strength through diversity and this
[8:00]is my next point here and when you look around the room
[8:03]all you see is diversity we are diverse because of our backgrounds
[8:07]where we come from the languages that we speak the foods that
[8:11]we eat but most importantly we are also diverse in the fields
[8:17]of work we come from and our experiences you must also question
[8:21]well what if we were all alike once Abdul Azim Hasani one
[8:28]of the most loyal companions of imam jawad peace be upon him
[8:32]visited imam and asked him to recite a narration from his great
[8:36]father's imam jawad read a word of wisdom from his father Abdul
[8:44]Azim repeated his request several times and each time imam jawad read
[8:49]a different narration from his grandfather's one of the narrations addressed was
[8:55]the answer to the question imam jawad narrated a hadith from Amir
[9:00]al-mumineen Imam Ali on the subject of diversity so the benefit of
[9:07]mankind is in its diversity and different capabilities and its annihilation is
[9:14]in the repeated characteristics and similarities so diversity among humans is one
[9:22]of the wonders of creation Allah has said in the holy quran
[9:25]what is the matter with you that you fear not the greatness
[9:31]of allah and indeed he has created you through diverse grades no
[9:36]two people are identical physical nor emotionally and the discovery of the
[9:43]fingerprint being being unique for every person attest to that everyone is
[9:48]expected to perform at the level of their capabilities and this is
[9:53]the measure in which we are tested by Allah and the last
[9:57]point I wanted to touch upon is the challenges we face in
[10:00]the future we are given the freedom to practice our religion here
[10:07]and we are also given the freedom to express ourselves as most
[10:11]of us comes from backgrounds where we have faced fierce and oftentimes
[10:16]fatal persecution yet we still find it very hard to uphold and
[10:21]practice our beliefs and rituals that so many of us before have
[10:29]sacrificed for this is something I also struggle with myself I believe
[10:35]enforcing rules and being strict with the youth might be something that
[10:40]most of us think will help them to be guided towards the
[10:45]right path but this can also create a large disconnect between elders
[10:49]and youth as the youth might feel undermined and powerless in the
[10:55]community other suggestions might be to just give them responsibility and importance
[11:01]in the community as we are doing in these Knights by giving
[11:06]them space to rise up and talk about some of the things
[11:12]that they would like to talk about all these are great points
[11:14]and do have major roles in how we continue on from the
[11:18]answer lies within a balance of all of these suggestions being balanced
[11:25]when giving freedom and also encouraging and investing in that in activities
[11:30]that the youth would enjoy would actually help us to create a
[11:34]better future for people here and I also believe that my first
[11:37]point where I said that our rituals and practices that have been
[11:46]coming to us for 1400 years are also the answer to to
[11:49]these problems that we face because they have also stood the test
[11:54]of time and we just need to enact those and continue to
[11:56]keep them strong in order to succeed in the in the future
[12:01]I would like to end my speech with giving you all my
[12:04]condolences on the death anniversary of sada Fatima the a debate throughout
[12:09]history has suffered great sorrow and great pain this is our time
[12:15]to uphold the moral values and ethics they have sacrificed everything for
[12:19]just so we could today receive them received the true and complete
[12:24]message of Islam [Music]
