[7:48]the effects of marijuana use on the mind and spirit please help
[7:53]me in welcoming our dear guest speakers said muhammad bacharach and brother
[7:59]edward juni with aloud salawat alam muhammad [Music] okay muhammad so thank
[9:09]you all for attending today uh we're this is our first mental
[9:14]health uh event of the year uh we're excited to be working
[9:16]with you all you know to be to be having these events
[9:20]with you all and excited to have you all here we have
[9:22]a lot of projects coming up that we're uh interested in in
[9:26]in starting here at the uh at the uh islamic institute of
[9:32]america um so so the faith uh community health initiative is the
[9:36]is a large organization that's been uh working here they had uh
[9:39]you know the first event was in january for the covet vaccines
[9:45]uh you know information about the education about the coveted vaccine which
[9:50]was uh which was a great success here and as part of
[9:51]the larger organization the larger initiative we at the uh islamic or
[9:56]with the mental health committee uh we're starting to uh you know
[10:01]we want to focus on issues that impact the community from a
[10:04]mental health standpoint so we have a lot of interesting ideas and
[10:08]and projects for the future and uh you know we can't wait
[10:13]to share them with everyone here and these events include you know
[10:16]include you know we're planning for the rest of the year but
[10:22]also specifically we have some group events some some individual things that
[10:26]we want to do as well the grow the goal is to
[10:31]help bring awareness to mental health issues within our community and to
[10:35]also remove uh remove stigma that's uh you know that's attached to
[10:37]mental health and seeking uh help for mental health issues uh in
[10:41]the community so we look forward to hearing your input as well
[10:46]and and and feedback if you have any questions about about anything
[10:48]if you have any suggestions you can uh you know come see
[10:51]me after the event and also uh yasmine and zainab are here
[10:56]for tonight's topic we're going to be discussing the effects of marijuana
[11:01]on marijuana use on our mind and spirit so today marijuana use
[11:07]is uh is prevalent to becoming more prevalent in our society in
[11:10]general and in in terms of the youth as well as more
[11:17]specifically uh so there's also you know the a lot of states
[11:18]are now legalizing marijuana including including michigan which i think it's been
[11:22]a couple of years here in michigan so this makes it a
[11:26]very relevant topic i think to discuss uh we'll look at this
[11:28]today from different points of view including uh including biological psychological and
[11:33]the islamic view as well of course today we have uh two
[11:38]speakers here we have dr dr edward junie he's the uh he's
[11:43]an addiction specialist at the university of michigan uh and we'll look
[11:48]forward to hearing from his expertise in the field and we have
[11:53]uh mohammed bakar who needs no introduction so we welcome both speakers
[11:59]and we'd like to start with dr giuni if he wants to
[12:02]give a small talk about this thank you very much hopefully the
[12:06]microphone is coming through okay so thank you for asking here tonight
[12:10]it's a pleasure to be here we have a nice audience and
[12:14]i'm not going to take too long i'm just going to spend
[12:20]about 15 minutes giving just a basic psychiatric and addiction overview of
[12:24]the use of marijuana and hopefully answer any questions that may come
[12:31]up marijuana has been around for a long time so this is
[12:35]not a new drug this has been used in this country for
[12:37]probably well over 100 years it gained a lot of attention in
[12:42]the 1960s and it continues to be used today and the statistics
[12:47]show that its utilization is actually increasing one of the things that's
[12:53]different though is that um the active ingredient within the marijuana meaning
[12:58]the the substance that actually causes the uh intoxicating effects is actually
[13:02]becoming more potent and that's actually not a good thing um so
[13:06]one of the ways that we say this is is that is
[13:09]that the marijuana of today is not your grandmother's marijuana uh so
[13:13]even though it's the same drug it's actually evolved and that's not
[13:18]and again as i stated that's not necessarily something that is good
[13:22]marijuana produces really a wide range of psychological effects mostly the effect
[13:29]is anti-anxiety calming for some people it can be euphoric meaning it
[13:35]could be mood enhancing in bad situations it can result in paranoia
[13:43]we have really two phases of the use of marijuana we have
[13:49]okay we have the intoxicating effect which is what people like but
[13:55]we also have a withdrawal effect and that means when the drug
[14:00]is being eliminated from your system your body reacts to it in
[14:05]an adverse way so for very heavy marijuana users those that are
[14:08]using on a daily basis when they abruptly stop using the drug
[14:12]they can present with significant anxiety agitation and it can be quite
[14:19]a debilitating experience for them the other point that i want to
[14:25]mention is that of legality because this is a big topic and
[14:28]i don't know why you know everyone seems to be hung up
[14:31]on is it legal is it not legal what states have it
[14:35]legal which states don't have illegal and i don't understand that um
[14:38]and i'm going to tell you why um the most dangerous drugs
[14:42]that we use in this society are 100 legal uh heroin or
[14:48]excuse me morphine opioids in general we have an opioid epidemic there's
[14:53]upwards of 20 000 people dying annually because of opiate overdoses opioids
[14:58]are completely legal drugs of course you have to have to be
[15:01]prescribed by a physician you can't buy them over the counter but
[15:05]these are legal alcohol alcohol has such significant effect on the global
[15:12]health care system uh i don't know of one organ system that
[15:15]alcohol does not affect it affects your liver your heart your bone
[15:19]marrow it affects your cognition uh it leads to cirrhosis to liver
[15:23]disease but alcohol is completely legal yet people are very focused on
[15:33]the legality of cannabis whether it's legal or not that doesn't change
[15:35]what it does and what it doesn't do so what are the
[15:40]facts about marijuana irrespective of what its legal status is marijuana is
[15:44]an addictive substance that's not an opinion it's a fact does everyone
[15:48]who use marijuana are you going to develop a addiction to the
[15:55]drug no you know studies show that maybe about you know maybe
[15:59]like nine to eleven percent of people that utilize marijuana are going
[16:03]to develop the disease of addiction and addiction is a disease well
[16:08]what does that mean it means that the individual cannot consistently abstain
[16:13]from using the drug they use the drug in a compulsive manner
[16:16]and in a manner which leads to a whole slew of personality
[16:24]changes and an inability to stop to stop to stop use the
[16:30]other effects are those that are cognitive there are studies that show
[16:35]that the utilization of marijuana can impair memory it can impair school
[16:38]performance it can poor it can impair occupational ability and we see
[16:48]significant adverse effects in the young population why is that because the
[16:54]adolescent brain is developing your brain continues to develop up until your
[17:00]mid-20s we know that utilizing this drug at a very young age
[17:04]affects brain development it affects the ability of your brain to learn
[17:10]and to do other cognitive tasks it also makes the individual more
[17:14]susceptible to developing addiction to other substances so when we have somebody
[17:22]that's coming to the clinic and they're a young adolescent we just
[17:27]tell them just don't because it's not worth the risk um obviously
[17:32]that's easier said that it's done but anybody that is a teenager
[17:37]and early adolescent whatever the case may be they should not be
[17:40]using this drug absolutely not their risks are just too high and
[17:43]the other question that we need to ask ourselves is why why
[17:47]are individuals resorting to this drug why are they using marijuana and
[17:51]that's a much bigger question we can answer in the next five
[17:55]to ten minutes there's a lot of reasons for that many of
[17:57]them are social some of them are physiological some of them are
[18:00]psychiatric there's young adolescents that are novelty seekers so they they enjoy
[18:09]and engaging in brand new experiences what does this do what does
[18:13]that do that may pull them into their they let me pull
[18:17]them into the direction of using marijuana but still we still have
[18:29]a multitude of adverse consequences that can manifest and so we encourage
[18:37]young teenagers and really anyone that's under the age of 25 that
[18:41]they should not be this they should not be utilizing this uh
[18:45]and then we get into the argument is that this is a
[18:48]what harm am i doing well at the end of the day
[18:52]it's a personal choice you know our role in treatment is not
[18:53]to tell somebody what to do with their body if you want
[18:56]to smoke marijuana that's your personal choice we provide treatment for individuals
[19:00]that are having that are having problems from it but i'll be
[19:05]happy you know hopefully during the q a period if you guys
[19:07]have specific case examples you want to talk about i'm certainly happy
[19:11]to entertain those and offer my personal input um there's a couple
[19:15]things it's hard doing this without a powerpoint usually i have a
[19:18]powerpoint so i'm just going by an outline i have in my
[19:23]mind that is blank right now so uh i just want to
[19:25]ensure that i'm touching all the topics that i need to touch
[19:30]on um okay uh so the other thing we need the other
[19:33]thing we need to talk about uh is going back to my
[19:37]previous point of that why do individuals start to use the drug
[19:41]one of them is this do they have an underlying checking the
[19:44]time here do they have an underlying susceptibility to drug addiction so
[19:50]we know that for certain individuals they do have an underlying vulnerability
[19:55]or susceptibility to what we call in the business of substance use
[20:01]disorder 20 30 years ago addiction was thought of as strictly being
[20:04]a social disease meaning somebody was engaging in this somebody was engaging
[20:08]in these behaviors because it was a choice i'm drinking every day
[20:12]because this is my choice i'm injecting heroin into my vein because
[20:15]this is my choice this is the life that i choose to
[20:19]live well people that have drug addiction have significant occupational social and
[20:24]interpersonal problems so individuals that struggled with this illness it was known
[20:30]to society that this is the person that's using drugs let's look
[20:33]at what they're doing to their life look at what they're doing
[20:35]with their family so the quote unquote addict became marginalized the person
[20:40]who is addicted is a bad person look at what they're doing
[20:43]to themselves look at what they're doing to their family we know
[20:48]now is that this is an illness and that it's based on
[20:53]multiple factors you know as i said before some of them may
[20:55]be biochemical physiological genetic psychiatric there's a multitude of factors that coalesce
[21:02]to create this problem and for some individuals those seeds are planted
[21:08]when you're a kid because a lot of this is genetic based
[21:13]and it's and it's being determined by factors that you don't have
[21:18]control over so if i have somebody that has a fertile ground
[21:21]for developing drug addiction and they start using marijuana that's a very
[21:26]bad scenario because even before they take their first puff they're already
[21:32]vulnerable and so what are these factors well there's a lot of
[21:33]them as the ones i just covered you know genetics underlying psychiatric
[21:37]illness and a multitude of other factors many people feel that i'm
[21:46]gonna the only way i'm gonna develop an addiction is if i
[21:48]use a drug in a compulsive way and we hear this all
[21:52]the time when people are prescribed painkillers oh if you use the
[21:54]morphine long enough you're gonna develop an addiction to it that is
[21:58]not true we see people that have become addicted to opiates after
[22:06]a single dose of codeine and these are individuals that have a
[22:11]very strong underlying susceptibility to this problem let me tell you a
[22:17]true story somebody comes into the clinic they're coming in for treatment
[22:20]for severe open addiction and this is the story they give this
[22:24]is a very highly function or was a very highly functional person
[22:26]was working in the healthcare profession and the story was this is
[22:30]that i had a very happy childhood i did very good in
[22:35]high school i played a lot of sports in high school i
[22:37]was very popular i was on the cheerleading squad a b c
[22:39]and d but all of a sudden when they were in the
[22:44]early 20s they developed a dental problem and they had to go
[22:50]to the dentist to get it fixed and so as part of
[22:52]this treatment the dentist gave them some pain relief with tylenol number
[22:56]three this person told us she said the minute i took tylenol
[23:02]3 the first tablet i took and these were her exact words
[23:08]i knew something was wrong so there was nothing in her history
[23:11]there was nothing in her development and her family history there was
[23:15]nothing there that would have predicted that this would have been an
[23:17]outcome that this would have turned that this would have predicted the
[23:21]course that had taken so why did this happen why did she
[23:24]develop this addiction after a single dose of a relatively weak opiate
[23:31]because she had significant biological vulnerability to it and of course i'm
[23:35]not saying that's the only thing there are other factors that come
[23:37]into play but what i'm telling you is is that in order
[23:40]to be susceptible to developing a drug addiction which includes a marijuana
[23:45]addiction you don't necessarily have to have a significant amount of family
[23:49]stress social stress it could simply be a genetic or a biological
[23:53]vulnerability that you have now is marijuana all bad no i'm not
[23:59]my intention of being here is not to be on an anti-marijuana
[24:05]kick the utilization of cannabis the active ingredient is something called thc
[24:08]it is known to have some medicinal or medical effects yes it
[24:13]can be very helpful in treating some side effects from chemotherapy it
[24:18]can be very helpful for individuals for other patients that are being
[24:22]treated for cancer it can help them gain weight it the use
[24:27]of thc specifically something well thc and cbd something called cbd oil
[24:33]can be very beneficial in treating something called neuropathic pain that's pain
[24:37]that comes from nerve damage so there are therapeutic uses for this
[24:41]drug but you need to have respect for the drug there's a
[24:45]lot of therapeutic effects for morphine right morphine you can't run you
[24:51]can't run a hospital without using morphine but morphine in the wrong
[24:55]situation can lead to overdose and death right cocaine has therapeutic uses
[25:01]you know cocaine is used in certain ent procedures right so just
[25:07]because a substance is addictive and it can cause significant problems in
[25:11]the wrong situation doesn't mean that it's bad all around these drugs
[25:15]are very complex they have a multitude of uses some of them
[25:20]are good some of them are bad okay now we always hear
[25:25]about getting the medical marijuana card i have medical marijuana for this
[25:30]that and that the majority of this that we see is bogus
[25:36]you want to know the medical marijuana patients that i see they're
[25:40]between the ages of 18 and 25 and have perfect physical health
[25:44]but they went to dr joe smith down the street who gives
[25:49]out medical marijuana because their back hurts that's ridiculous who is it
[25:54]that necessitates medical marijuana people that have cancer people that have that
[26:00]are cachetic that are losing weight people that have degenerative neurological disorders
[26:06]individuals that are truly sick that are medically frail and will benefit
[26:10]from the utilization of this drug it's not the ex-21 year old
[26:16]football player that wants to get it legally and that's what we
[26:21]see and it's really unfortunate too because i think that under the
[26:24]right guidance i think this could be a good program but unfortunately
[26:28]individuals including physicians have completely abused it and it's become a money-making
[26:34]racket it's actually a joke so whenever someone comes in and they
[26:37]say they have the medical marijuana card i'll be honest with you
[26:41]our eyes rolled a little bit because 99 of the time it's
[26:46]not for a it's not for a legitimate reason and the legitimate
[26:48]reasons are certainly out there it's because they gave this doctor i'm
[26:52]not even going to call them a doctor they're giving it to
[26:56]some person that puts a medical degree on their wall and they're
[26:58]giving him 150 bucks and he's giving them the medical marijuana waiver
[27:02]it's not for oh it's not for a legitimate medical purpose but
[27:06]now with the legality and with some states making it legal that's
[27:09]really no longer an issue but again i don't think we need
[27:13]to focus on the legality of it because as i said at
[27:15]the beginning of my talk many drugs are legal but that doesn't
[27:19]change the liability that they have legality does not equate to liability
[27:25]there's a lot of substances that are legal that are extremely dangerous
[27:30]what are my opinions about the legality i don't think it's a
[27:35]good thing because i don't think the society has learned to respect
[27:37]the drug enough and so i do have concerns about it i
[27:42]do have concerns about young people going to the marijuana dispensaries utilizing
[27:46]it i worry about all those people that have underlying susceptibilities and
[27:49]vulnerabilities and when they start utilizing this it's going to end up
[27:54]to lead to compulsive utilization possibly open the door to other drug
[27:58]use so it actually concerns me a little bit um what else
[28:04]treatment okay i'll just end on that so for an individual who
[28:08]is struggling with marijuana addiction this is something that needs to be
[28:10]treated um it's not going to go away by simply ignoring it
[28:17]as i said before that this is a legitimate health condition and
[28:22]there are validated treatments for this so if somebody is struggling with
[28:24]this addiction they have to be assessed and evaluated by a trained
[28:28]professional they have to enter into a treatment program that's all i
[28:34]have like i said i'm sure i'm hoping that there will be
[28:37]time for q a afterwards and i look forward to your questions
[28:40]thank you very much dr johnny can we have a loud salawat
[28:47][Music] go ahead with your talking i begin in the name of
[29:08]the almighty god the compassionate the merciful the one who has created
[29:13]everything in utmost perfection and may the peace and blessings of the
[29:16]almighty god be upon his pure and beloved messenger prophet muhammad s
[29:28]and his immaculate progeny of the bait peace be upon them especially
[29:33]the leader of our time the awaited savior and imam al-mahdi respected
[29:39]brothers and sisters i would like to thank our dear brother dr
[29:47]ed juni for his wonderful presentation and for sharing with us his
[29:54]professional perspective on marijuana i would like to also thank my dear
[29:59]brothers for moderating this program and i would like to thank you
[30:06]all my dear brothers and sisters for coming to this very important
[30:11]program that is really relevant these days it's affecting the heart of
[30:17]our communities when we talk about marijuana one general attitude that i
[30:22]find amongst the youth today is the following a young man will
[30:27]come up to me and he'll tell me say it look with
[30:32]all due respect to you scholars don't lecture me here about marijuana
[30:35]just tell me is it and what's your evidence that is the
[30:40]general attitude before we examine the spiritual religious perspective on a drug
[30:48]like marijuana i would like to offer some introductory points for us
[30:55]to all consider when we run into such situations the first point
[31:02]my dear brothers and sisters is that we have to remind ourselves
[31:06]that allah subhanahu wa ta'ala created us and he created our bodies
[31:13]and allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is the real owner of our bodies
[31:22]we think we own this body i think i can do whatever
[31:25]i want to this body i can consume whatever i want i
[31:29]can do whatever i want to my brain to my digestive system
[31:34]to my health as believers who believe in allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[31:43]as believers who believe that god is not only the owner of
[31:49]the universe but also the owner of your body we have to
[31:51]treat this body with respect it's an amana that god has given
[31:59]you before you do anything you ask yourself am i authorized by
[32:02]the owner of this body to use this body in this matter
[32:07]or no because i will be held liable on the day of
[32:10]judgment allah subhanahu ta'ala will ask me allah will tell you did
[32:15]you create yourself did you own your body no i created you
[32:18]i gave you the gift of life why did you use your
[32:26]body in this manner was it in line with the guidelines that
[32:29]i gave you this is the biggest question we will be asked
[32:33]on the day of judgment that's why al-imam zaina abiding salah in
[32:39]his treatise on rights russia pretty much begins that treat ice by
[32:48]examining the rights of your body parts on you the rights of
[32:54]your eyes are you observing them the rights of your ears on
[33:00]you the rights of your tongues they all have rights over us
[33:07]are we observing these rights or no so before you come and
[33:10]ask is this halal is this haram is this legal is this
[33:15]not legal understand that this body is an amana is a trust
[33:17]that allah has given to you are you familiar with the guidelines
[33:23]are you using this body in a way that you're authorized to
[33:29]do so in a way that satisfies allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that's
[33:33]one very fundamental point to consider my dear brothers and sisters the
[33:39]second point many times we look at the physical effects of our
[33:47]actions of what we consume and we disregard the spiritual effects dr
[33:50]ed has mentioned some of the physical impacts how marijuana can alter
[33:58]your brain especially if you're still developing if you're a young teenager
[34:01]it has serious consequences on your brain it alters the structure of
[34:12]your brain someone can come and argue that this is okay it's
[34:14]not that severe i've done my research it's something that i can
[34:21]handle fine from a physical aspect if you've done your research and
[34:24]you'd like to deny some scientific research as well that's up to
[34:29]you it's your choice but what about the spiritual effects do you
[34:33]know the spiritual effects of what you consume of what you eat
[34:36]everything that we eat my dear brothers and sisters has an impact
[34:40]on us that's why we have halal and haram a halal diet
[34:49]is one that helps your soul develop a haram diet is one
[34:53]that does damage to your spirituality too often we forget these several
[34:59]years ago i went to kansas for a program at a university
[35:05]over there one brother narrated the story to me he told me
[35:11]i have a roommate and we live in the small college town
[35:14]where halal food is not really accessible we have to drive a
[35:20]few hours to get a halal meal so my friend started to
[35:25]lose his patience he wants that chicken he wants that hamburger he's
[35:30]fed up with eating fish and vegetarian food so one day my
[35:35]friend told me you know what i'm going to send a letter
[35:38]to the office of my merchant and i'm going to tell them
[35:40]i live in a college town there's no food so you better
[35:44]make haram food halal to me because it's an exceptional scenario here
[35:50]i told them don't bother the manager is not going to make
[35:53]it hard for you you're not starving he said no let me
[35:56]do my job so he asked the office of his media they
[35:59]followed up with this question there's no other food in your area
[36:04]is there vegetarian food is there seafood that you can eat he
[36:08]said yes but i miss that chicken i miss those hamburgers the
[36:13]office of ismail said no this is not halal for you it
[36:17]would be halal for you if you're starving if you're malnourished you
[36:21]don't have access to proper nutrition but you do there are millions
[36:26]of people in your country they're vegetarians so you can live a
[36:31]few years like that he said my friend got agitated he's like
[36:34]what are these marajas know about our difficulties they sit in their
[36:40]homes in najaf and look at that arrogance he says that day
[36:44]he went to the school cafeteria he got up he got that
[36:48]haram chicken he sat next to me with so much pride and
[36:52]happiness and he ate it look what happens next now you could
[36:56]say it's just a chicken it's me i mean what's bad about
[37:01]that meat his roommate told me that day we went back to
[37:05]the room the time for salah came let's get up and pray
[37:10]he's like you know what i'm a little bit tired now you
[37:13]pray your salah i'll pray later i said okay fine few minutes
[37:19]before sunset i told him habibi the sun is about to set
[37:22]your salah is going to become you haven't prayed yet he said
[37:29]it's okay i'll pray it later my friend told me that was
[37:32]the last day i saw my friend praying next friday night he
[37:37]went to the bar he got drunk and he committed a number
[37:41]of other immoral acts it started with one small chicken subhanallah he
[37:47]says my own roommate whom i had lived with years this was
[37:51]his fate you see the spiritual effects my dear brothers and sisters
[37:56]don't dismiss the spiritual effects some people talk about music we're talking
[38:01]about of course the addictive haram type of music it has spiritual
[38:05]effects it distracts you from allah subhana wa it deflates your desire
[38:11]to worship god ask people who are in that position i've asked
[38:17]them imagine if you just heard that music that you're addicted to
[38:21]the inappropriate type of music minutes later do you really feel like
[38:25]getting up and praying getting up to pray to allah subhanahu ta'ala
[38:29]do you really feel like doing dua commade it deflates your desire
[38:35]to worship god these are spiritual effects whenever you come to such
[38:42]a discussion please keep in mind these two points this body is
[38:46]not mine maybe legally it's yours but in the eyes of allah
[38:53]subhanahu ta'ala it's an amana in your hand are you misusing this
[38:56]body or no are you violating the law of god or no
[38:59]number two realize that there are spiritual effects so now we are
[39:05]discussing marijuana in our topic tonight and many people ask what is
[39:10]the islamic perspective on taking such a drug now we have medical
[39:17]marijuana and we have marijuana for recreational use medical marijuana is allowed
[39:22]by the religion of islam through the fatwa of our scholars if
[39:26]it is indeed a medical necessity and there are no other alternatives
[39:33]as dr ed said many people today they find some hiyala doctor
[39:39]somewhere in the area who's going to prescribe to them medical marijuana
[39:45]just because you found a legal way to get it does not
[39:51]make it halal my dear brothers and sisters some people all they
[39:54]care about is this legal or is this not legal i found
[39:58]a legal way i found a legal loophole this doesn't fly with
[40:01]allah subhanahu ta'ala what is the islamic guideline here if it's a
[40:06]legit medical reason that someone needs it and scholars have mentioned another
[40:12]condition there's no alternative if there is another alternative for your condition
[40:17]that doesn't involve these types of drugs opioids marijuana you have to
[40:22]avoid them go seek something that's safer many times we don't many
[40:28]times we don't so it has to be a legitimate medical reason
[40:34]if it is a medical reason sure scholars say out of medical
[40:39]necessity that becomes halal that becomes okay now let's talk about recreational
[40:46]marijuana you know these days we live in a culture of instant
[40:53]gratification we want something to instantly change our mood make us feel
[40:59]good and distract us from the difficulties of life or from the
[41:05]consequences of bad decisions that we've made or mistakes that we've made
[41:09]this is one reason why many people resort to drugs now in
[41:14]no way am i judging them as dr ed said there are
[41:18]many factors why people resort to drugs a lot of times they
[41:22]are victims themselves they're not bad people but they fell as victims
[41:27]into this culture of drugs but there are some people they seek
[41:31]drugs just to escape some difficulties in life to distract themselves to
[41:38]feel good my dear brothers and sisters allah has a greater purpose
[41:44]for us there are productive ways to distract yourself from pain the
[41:55]problem is i'm just seeking what my nephs wants my naps pulls
[42:00]me go do this drug it feels good there's peer pressure let's
[42:03]go and do it exercise self-restraint self-control if you are going through
[42:10]a stressful situation in your life there are productive ways to relieve
[42:14]that stress my dear brothers and sisters help out the poor volunteer
[42:20]do something productive go take a nake nature walk there is many
[42:24]things that you can do to help cope with some of the
[42:29]stress and the difficulties that you have you don't have to think
[42:32]of drugs as your resort when it comes to these difficulties and
[42:36]to this type of stress and many many times we're not aware
[42:43]of the consequences we think it's just one puff it's okay but
[42:48]it leads it leads to addiction sometimes it leads to you having
[42:53]the courage to experience other drugs see before you do any drugs
[43:00]there's that barrier there's that psychological barrier no no i would never
[43:03]do drugs but once you do one you do too that barrier
[43:06]is broken it's much easier for you to go and do more
[43:11]dangerous drugs and to overdose and here in this community my dear
[43:16]brothers and sisters in the last two years as far as i
[43:20]know and there's many cases that we don't know about as far
[43:23]as i know over 80 of our youth young brothers and sisters
[43:27]lost their lives because of drugs can you imagine 80 of our
[43:33]youth that we know about either they overdosed or they committed suicide
[43:39]because of severe drug addiction or they got themselves into trouble because
[43:44]of the influence of drugs and that's why they died over 80.
[43:49]just a few years ago just a few years ago here here
[43:52]in this institute a woman came a mother grieving mother she was
[43:59]crying she was holding the hands of her 13 year old son
[44:02]she said say it i lost my 20 year old son to
[44:08]drugs i'm losing my 13 year old son now do something save
[44:13]us this is happening this is happening to our families to our
[44:17]communities we have to be aware my dear brothers and sisters of
[44:21]the consequences of doing any drug if you really don't have a
[44:26]legitimate reason why you need to as dr ed said okay there
[44:30]are some cases cancer some other severe conditions but put that to
[44:36]the side why are so many people doing drugs and then you
[44:39]have people who are trying to take advantage of the opportunity to
[44:45]invest in recreational marijuana one young man came to me he told
[44:48]me say it i can make 10 million dollars 10 million dollars
[44:53]from this business opportunity is this i just ask you one question
[44:59]i told him okay you can make your money but ask me
[45:02]between you and god do you think allah will put the barakah
[45:05]and that money can you sleep at night knowing that you're helping
[45:10]a culture that is ruining the lives of our youth how can
[45:13]you sleep peacefully at night what kind of but i can happiness
[45:18]and satisfaction is this money going to bring to your life now
[45:21]in islamic law we have what is called the law of no
[45:28]harm the prophet salallahu alaihi declared this law in medina he made
[45:32]it very clear to muslims that you cannot harm yourselves significant harm
[45:38]you're not allowed allah has not authorized you if the medical scientific
[45:43]community are saying that if you don't really have a legitimate excuse
[45:48]and you're consuming tch marijuana and that's altering your brain that's harming
[45:57]your body you're putting yourself at a great risk that becomes haram
[46:02]according to the law of allah because the prophet told us you
[46:05]don't have the authority to harm yourself now some scholars have also
[46:13]brought the discussion of what's called al-musker and musker in arabic or
[46:18]an islamic law is something that makes you drunk something that intoxicates
[46:23]you to the point you know to the point where you're tipsy
[46:27]you lose your balance right almost like drunk now people have different
[46:32]perspectives on that some people say no that doesn't really apply to
[46:35]marijuana does it make you drunk or tipsy or such that you
[46:40]lose your balance fine if this doesn't apply just as it would
[46:46]apply to let's say alcohol heroin other severe drugs we still have
[46:51]the law of no harm harm to yourself and harm to your
[46:55]families my dear brothers and sisters i know many families their son
[47:00]or their daughter is addicted to marijuana they struggle with their family
[47:05]relationships they have loving family members a loving father a loving mother
[47:13]loving siblings who are willing to give them everything they're funding their
[47:17]education they're helping them with their career and they just blow all
[47:22]that away why because of the drug addiction is that how you
[47:26]pay your family back after all these years your family raised you
[47:31]sacrificed for you invested in you and now that you're young you're
[47:37]20 25 they want to be happy to see you successful graduate
[47:40]establish a career start a family now it's the time that you
[47:44]make your family happy you cause them pain you cause them suffering
[47:48]you make them depressed you give them sleepless nights do you think
[47:52]allah is going to give you tawfiq in your life think about
[47:55]this my dear brothers and sisters having said that once again i
[48:01]would like to remind you in no way in my words am
[48:04]i judging anyone i understand some people they become victims of this
[48:10]as dr ed said there are many factors we're not putting anyone
[48:14]down but would like you to have the awareness for those of
[48:16]you who have not tried it yet don't try it there's no
[48:20]reason why you need to try it it will not make you
[48:24]a better person it will not make you successful make no mistake
[48:27]about that for those who are struggling you need to get help
[48:32]and it's okay to get help it's okay to come to a
[48:34]professional to an institution that you trust and tell them i'm suffering
[48:38]i need help it's okay to tell your family or trusted friends
[48:43]i need help help me it's okay there's nothing wrong with that
[48:48]a believer seeks help so with that inshallah we can proceed to
[48:53]the uh second part uh of the program and uh say ahmed
[48:58]if you can lead us into the last part of the program
[49:01]insha'allah thank you say it can you have a one lot please
[49:06]for this okay so i think uh brother ali was passing around
[49:13]some some cards if he has uh for those who have questions
[49:18]in the audience um then i think we have some here as
[49:23]well so uh dr juni there's this question is for you the
[49:31]question says what's your response to those who say that more marijuana
[49:33]usage can be one of the solutions to the opioid epidemic i
[49:40]would like to my responses is that they're basing that on what
[49:46]so that would be my response um so i don't know if
[49:52]that individual has a source um but what data are they basing
[49:57]that on where has this been studied um so the thing with
[50:03]that's the solution to the open epidemic we have treatments we have
[50:07]validated treatments to treat opiate addiction so opiate addiction like you know
[50:16]any other disease you have evidence-based treatments so if somebody is coming
[50:21]to us with what we call an opiate use disorder we have
[50:25]a methodology we go by by which we implement a treatment program
[50:29]so there's very successful very um there's evidence-based modalities that we use
[50:37]to treat opioid addiction and to my knowledge i i haven't seen
[50:41]marijuana being any bit of a part of that so uh we
[50:44]do have good treatment so um if if this person has said
[50:49]that the utilization of marijuana um is superior to those treatments i
[50:53]would like to see that data because i haven't seen it yet
[50:56]i think um doctor maybe maybe one thing they're referring to is
[51:00]the uh with the legalization of marijuana maybe that more attention you
[51:04]know people will take what what may be known as or people
[51:07]popularized as maybe a less a less you know dangerous drug than
[51:14]than opioids so they would maybe people take this more than than
[51:16]the opioids i see i i think that's probably based on personal
[51:23]opinion um what we're going to have to wait and see let
[51:25]time pass and we'll have to wait and see what happens i
[51:28]mean when we look at when we look at risk liability i
[51:32]mean clearly speaking from an objective standpoint marijuana is much less lethal
[51:37]than opiates than heroin if i had a choice of someone to
[51:42]be addicted to marijuana or addicted to opiates i would definitely choose
[51:44]them to be addicted to the marijuana so whether or not the
[51:50]legalization of marijuana and the potential for increased prevalence of marijuana utilization
[51:55]is that going to result in you know a decreased prevalence of
[52:00]opiate addiction the answer to that question is that i don't know
[52:04]we're going to have to wait and see okay thank you all
[52:10]right thank you brother thank you please make sure oh sure yes
[52:29]okay doctor juni uh one other question for you is uh what's
[52:34]your response to marijuana use being a gateway drug do you agree
[52:38]or disagree i do agree with that um and again just going
[52:44]on what i said before with respect to age of onset i
[52:48]think it's more of an issue with early users i think it's
[52:51]a less of a concern if individuals are using later on in
[52:55]their life or into early adulthood but i think if you have
[52:57]somebody that is a teenager i think that you're setting a precedent
[53:00]you're basically creating a fertile ground for uh the introduction of other
[53:07]reinforcing substances so that's a concept that i do believe in but
[53:12]again it's not universal not everybody who uses marijuana is going to
[53:15]go and use heroin or is it going to go and use
[53:19]methamphetamine or is it going to go and use cocaine but i
[53:21]think what you're doing is you're increasing the likelihood so a better
[53:24]way of answering that is is that i think those that have
[53:27]underlying susceptibility and vulnerability yes i think it is a gateway drug
[53:32]okay thank you for saying uh thank you uh saydna is it
[53:41]haram to own a dispensary is it haram to own a marijuana
[53:45]dispensary scholars say that if this dispensary is dispensing medical marijuana and
[53:54]you're confident that most people who are coming to this dispensary have
[53:59]a legitimate medical reason then yes it would be hard to invest
[54:05]in that but if you're investing in recreational marijuana or you're investing
[54:10]in a dispensary in an area where you know the majority of
[54:16]people coming to you as dr ed said are 18 to 25
[54:20]year olds and they don't really have a legitimate excuse and you're
[54:24]facilitating this for them then it would become haram to invest in
[54:28]that yes scholars are very clear um about about their fatwa another
[54:34]question for you sayed is if there's another option another medical option
[54:38]but there's less side effects from using marijuana would it be would
[54:41]it be okay to use marijuana instead so if there is another
[54:49]option another alternative but it has more side effects than marijuana yeah
[54:52]okay so if there is another alternative to marijuana and you want
[54:57]you have a legitimate medical reason why you need to use it
[54:59]so let's assume there is another alternative but it has worse side
[55:05]effects if you're confident based on your research from your doctor and
[55:11]other doctors and i would recommend to you my dear brothers and
[55:16]sisters in these matters don't just take the word of your doctor
[55:19]also hear out the medical community get a second opinion go to
[55:25]a trusted person ask them about this other alternative if they clearly
[55:30]tell you that that alternative is not really a good alternative you
[55:34]know the side effects are too risky it will probably end up
[55:38]harming you more than the marijuana that you're taking in that case
[55:41]yes you can take the marijuana and you can avoid that other
[55:44]alternative but if that other alternative is pretty equal in side effects
[55:48]then yes scholars have mentioned that you should avoid the marijuana and
[55:54]take that other alternative okay thank you dr juni can you overdose
[55:59]on marijuana uh no so one of the good things about marijuana
[56:05]is that with regard to lethality very if ever does this does
[56:15]this happen there there are many drugs that in overdose situations create
[56:22]significant illness many drugs um you know in in overdose situations can
[56:25]lead to death but marijuana is not one of them so dr
[56:28]ed if someone takes like 30 puffs in one sitting what happens
[56:34]i don't know i've never seen that uh uh i i think
[56:38]i'm not sure if that's a realistic city actually let me let
[56:42]me actually let me take that a step further so with with
[56:47]heavy marijuana utilization um there is a significant risk for increased psychiatric
[56:54]effect meaning somebody can develop psychosis meaning that their interpretation of reality
[56:58]is flawed they may develop paranoia um so that would be an
[57:04]adverse effect but it's not likely going to result in death but
[57:06]i do want to say though that there is something i should
[57:09]have mentioned this in my um introductory com wow my voice just
[57:13]got a lot louder uh there is something called k2 or spice
[57:18]this is synthetic marijuana so until this point we've been talking about
[57:23]naturally harvested marijuana you know the cannabis that comes from the plant
[57:27]so as i said before the active ingredient is there is something
[57:32]called thd it's called tetrahydrocannabinol that's the active what we call the
[57:34]psychoactive ingredient you can make that in a lab and so people
[57:39]do this so they can make thc or thc derivatives in a
[57:45]lab that will bind to the same receptors in the central nervous
[57:50]system this stuff is very dangerous this is called either k2 or
[57:54]spice what they do is they have plant product and they spray
[57:58]it with this synthetic this man-made marijuana that's dangerous that has led
[58:04]if i'm not mistaken that has led to cases of death so
[58:09]the synthetic marijuana the k2 the spice that has led to severe
[58:14]psychiatric instability and if i'm not mistaken there are some case reports
[58:19]of death resulting from that and is that widely available yeah um
[58:27]i i believe the federal government has cracked down on it somewhat
[58:30]i'm not sure um i remember four or five years ago it
[58:33]was a really big deal in our clinic the clinic i work
[58:39]in we're seeing less of it i don't know if the dea
[58:40]or if the um or if the state police have started to
[58:44]crack down on it but i do know that a few years
[58:46]ago it was a really big problem okay thank you uh this
[58:53]question i think might be further say it so if marijuana comes
[58:56]down my anxiety and depression does it become okay so let's assume
[59:02]that marijuana helps you with anxiety and depression first of all try
[59:07]to verify that make sure that this is the proper treatment for
[59:12]you before you assume that this is the only treatment for you
[59:15]but let's say your doctor tells you that again we go back
[59:18]to the discussion of alternatives are there better better alternatives less harmful
[59:24]alternatives for you there are many ways to manage your stress depression
[59:28]anxiety it doesn't have to be a drug like marijuana do your
[59:36]best make the effort do due diligence to figure out what other
[59:40]alternatives there are if your doctor tells you marijuana tell your doctor
[59:43]i want another alternative imagine marijuana didn't exist what there's no treatment
[59:47]for my anxiety for my depression there could be better treatments you
[59:52]have to seek them out my dear brothers and sisters there's so
[59:56]many type of therapies out there do research speak to people who've
[60:01]gone that route see what benefited them there are some people who
[60:05]benefit more from cognitive therapy i myself i know people who were
[60:13]severely depressed they were suicidal and a cognitive therapist really helped them
[60:17]they did take some minor medications here and there but that helped
[60:22]them explore these alternatives sometimes you have to see a psychiatrist sometimes
[60:26]you have to take certain types of drugs but don't rush into
[60:31]taking marijuana to help you with anxiety and depression without exploring all
[60:36]these alternatives if you have and you still feel confident that this
[60:39]is the appropriate solution for you okay then between you and allah
[60:44]subhanahu wa ta'ala scholars will say it would be halal because that
[60:48]is a medical necessity over here and in china can i comment
[60:53]on that too go ahead if i may um so yes it's
[60:58]going to calm your anxiety that's part of the problem is that
[61:02]the medicine or the medicine in some cases it's a medicine the
[61:08]drug is misused and people use it compulsively because it has a
[61:14]euphoric or a calming effect when we so just to cut tail
[61:20]on what the sade was just saying which was a very eloquent
[61:24]response i will just add that when somebody says that it relieves
[61:28]their anxiety and their depression me as a clinician i want to
[61:32]ask them what do you mean by that does it mean that
[61:34]it you know that you're laying on the couch in the basement
[61:37]and that's that's relief for you when we talk about treatment and
[61:42]therapeutic effect of course the first thing we talk about is a
[61:46]relief of the symptoms but the second thing we look at is
[61:49]we look at functionality as we look at productivity we look at
[61:52]are you doing the things you want to do so if somebody
[61:55]says this is helping my depression this is helping my anxiety and
[61:57]i say what have you been doing for the last week well
[62:00]i've been sitting down in the basement doing absolutely nothing well that's
[62:03]really not what we want right i understand that it's that you're
[62:07]getting a relief of symptoms but this really isn't treatment so we
[62:10]need to make that distinction that that's actually a very good point
[62:14]based on my interaction with a number of families this is one
[62:19]of the biggest challenges that they have shared with us that you
[62:23]know my son or daughter who's taking marijuana their life is not
[62:28]functional like it was before they're you know struggling with their studies
[62:32]they're not being productive so maybe you're getting that relief as dr
[62:38]ed said but what's the quality of your life now how productive
[62:42]are you how functional are you you have to keep that in
[62:46]mind as well and some another concern that i have seen with
[62:50]uh many of the youth is that once they become addicted on
[62:55]these types of drugs they actually fall into many many other pits
[63:01]one of them is they become habitual liars they constantly have to
[63:07]lie to their families this person would never lie to mom and
[63:11]dad to other members of the family now because of this drug
[63:16]problem and the person's trying to justify no it's okay it's legal
[63:20]i found a halal usage for it yeah but look at all
[63:23]the times you're lying to your family look at all the times
[63:27]that you're becoming manipulative and some of them even when they run
[63:31]out of money what do they do they become thieves one father
[63:35]told me say it my son has become a professional thief i
[63:39]don't know how he finds access to my money he'll sit for
[63:43]hours and hours think on how to somehow get money from me
[63:48]because he wants the next dose see it's all interrelated and that
[63:55]is why our marajas have ruled that for recreational purposes it's hara
[64:00]we've seen the evidence it's just harmful for you and uh just
[64:06]to to uh to follow up on a point you mentioned say
[64:10]it i think you know part of the the goal of the
[64:11]mental health committee inshallah is to is to educate kind of about
[64:16]the different types of therapies you know people can do different different
[64:18]treatments that we can you know that hopefully we can refer them
[64:23]to and maybe you know just start the educational process at least
[64:27]here so inshallah that can be useful so i think this one
[64:33]can be for uh both speakers as well the doctor and sayyid
[64:36]as how do we break the cycle of addiction addiction to anything
[64:42]so uh dr julie if you want to start dr ed let's
[64:45]get your profession um so you have to get treatment um i've
[64:49]been doing this for 10 years and very rarely do we see
[64:54]people get better without engaging in a professional treatment program so you
[65:00]have to get treatment by a credentialed professional who has experience in
[65:06]this unfortunately finding somebody with experience and treating this in these disorders
[65:11]can be quite challenging um you want to ensure the individual is
[65:14]experienced that um that they have either a board certification or some
[65:20]type of a credential that has validated that they're qualified to treat
[65:26]this problem you can go to a reputable treatment center so that
[65:30]would be the advice i this this unfortunately i wish it could
[65:35]get brought get better with prayer alone but it won't i wish
[65:38]it could get better with increased family contact and i've been to
[65:40]multiple seminars within the community that this is what people say they
[65:45]say you need to increase family contact you need to stop doing
[65:48]haram things you need to go to the masjid all those are
[65:50]good things and i guarantee you all those things are going to
[65:54]help but they're not going to cure the problem if you really
[65:56]want to break the cycle you have to get into a treatment
[66:01]program there's no other way doctor ed one concern that i've seen
[66:04]families have and they seem to be you know legitimate concerns they
[66:10]say that we're trying to look for a therapist but we've either
[66:14]had a bad experience before or we know family members or friends
[66:17]who've had a negative experience so my son or daughter was struggling
[66:22]with you know depression or anxiety we took them to a psychiatrist
[66:29]and you know they just immediately put them on these heavy drugs
[66:32]and now they're addicted to these drugs so they're just not trusting
[66:38]anymore or one father told me i spent a hundred thousand dollars
[66:42]sending my son to rehab in another state he came back a
[66:45]week later he was back on drugs so what would you say
[66:49]to families like that how is is there a reliable way to
[66:55]find out who's good like should we go like on google and
[66:58]read their reviews and see what other people said in addition of
[67:01]course to having the credentials that you mentioned what what's an effective
[67:06]way there isn't really any one effective way other than just doing
[67:11]your homework um i really wish that there was um you know
[67:14]i can just i think one thing we can do is come
[67:16]into seminars like this and i think these need to be held
[67:20]more often um you know the thing that i can tell you
[67:22]is that you know you might want to have a seminar yet
[67:26]you said you have a health committee maybe having a seminar for
[67:30]the community on how to identify the right mental health practitioner for
[67:33]you and then we can spend the whole two hours you know
[67:38]going over what are the things to look for what are the
[67:40]things not to look for i'll try and paraphrase it very briefly
[67:44]the first thing is is that it's very common for people not
[67:48]to like their therapist and that's not a bad thing whenever someone
[67:52]says i don't like my therapist and i say why well they
[67:55]told me something i didn't like well you know let me tell
[67:58]you what therapy is well let me tell you what therapy isn't
[68:00]therapy is not you going in there sitting with somebody and the
[68:04]person tells you oh you're a wonderful fantastic person you have no
[68:07]reason to be depressed you're a b c and d uh this
[68:10]is not a one-hour compliment session when you go into therapy you're
[68:13]gonna hear things you don't like okay and that's not a way
[68:17]to back away so having a disagreement or not having a connection
[68:20]with a therapist sometime that's valid sometimes the therapist touched on something
[68:24]that the individual is not comfortable talking about and so that's something
[68:28]that needs to be looked at further with regard to psychiatrists the
[68:32]issue of medication prescribing psychiatry is a big problem certainly i mean
[68:38]i am a psychiatrist that's my profession that's what i do in
[68:40]medicines i couldn't do my job with that medicines are life-saving they're
[68:43]exceptionally helpful and we use we use medicines all the time unfortunately
[68:48]there are there are a group of psychiatrists that are they basically
[68:53]live by their prescription pad and if you go into their office
[68:58]you're gonna walk out of there with three or four prescriptions that
[69:01]is not good medicine now psychiatric medicines work they certainly should be
[69:04]used they're very helpful in treating depression anxiety schizophrenia manic depression they're
[69:11]very good but there are certain prescribers that they over prescribe and
[69:17]just very briefly if you have somebody that's utilizing high doses of
[69:22]sedatives these are called benzodiazepines like xanax adivan valium if you have
[69:27]a psychiatrist that is giving you these for can for continual use
[69:31]that's a red flag if you have a psychiatrist that's giving you
[69:34]ritalin and adderall after a 15-minute assessment that's a red flag you
[69:38]know adderall and ritalin they're very wonderful drugs in treating adhd they're
[69:43]extremely effective but unfortunately they're over prescribed sedatives are very good drugs
[69:49]they're used in treating panic attacks acute episodes of anxiety they're very
[69:52]effective but they're over prescribed and they're very habit-forming so it's a
[69:56]great question um you know i i would encourage you guys that
[70:01]if it's a big issue within the community i think it should
[70:04]be addressed in a community forum thank you uh dr ed what
[70:11]about um this person is asking about the wax pen uh what
[70:14]i'm sorry wax pen you're familiar with the wax pen yeah it's
[70:18]called the wax pen he said now this is is there a
[70:20]difference between the wax pen and regular marijuana well if you refer
[70:24]i don't know if this person is referring to dabbing um i
[70:26]learned something every time i i i do a seminar so thank
[70:31]you i haven't my patients don't use the wax pen but uh
[70:33]there are many ways of using marijuana uh i'm assuming that that's
[70:36]one of them and i'll defer to anyone in the audience if
[70:39]you want to educate us about that i'll be very interested to
[70:41]hear i'm sorry with the difference between the wax pen and what
[70:44]no that's it is is it is it addictive as well that's
[70:48]what the question is so if uh if they're utilizing thc then
[70:52]yes because that's what we're looking for so when we're you know
[70:55]it it's the drug the drug is the drug is thc what
[70:59]is not typically addictive what is not addictive what is not habit-forming
[71:03]and what is not what we call psychoactive or creating euphoria is
[71:08]cbd oil cbd cbd oil is fine but if they're using other
[71:13]cannabis oils that contain thc yeah that is going to be addictive
[71:18]okay thank you okay so question for say it many many say
[71:27]that cannabis helps decrease anxiety which helps a person become more spiritual
[71:33]since they are thinking more appropriately so the claim is that if
[71:39]you take the marijuana it helps you with your anxiety it could
[71:41]make you more spiritual right now i'm not going to just dismiss
[71:46]that right off the bat sometimes that could be the case maybe
[71:50]this person their personal experience is that they were dealing with anxiety
[71:55]they were able to somehow reduce it control it with marijuana and
[71:59]then they felt spiritual now a drug like that is not going
[72:05]to make you feel spiritual the person was dealing with anxiety the
[72:11]marijuana helped control the anxiety that's the claim and so the person
[72:15]maybe felt like they were in their normal state and so they
[72:20]felt spiritual that doesn't mean that marijuana is going to make you
[72:23]more spiritual you have anxiety you have depression you need to treat
[72:30]it you need to address it now sometimes temporarily marijuana can help
[72:34]with that but we've already discussed how you know that can be
[72:39]misused or that can make you dysfunctional maybe for a few minutes
[72:43]you sp you feel spiritual right but are you functional are you
[72:49]having a quality of life or no you're just sitting there lazy
[72:53]not knowing what to do or not having the energy to go
[72:57]about your daily activities that's also something to consider allah doesn't want
[73:00]you to sit there on your couch feeling spiritual and having a
[73:04]dysfunctional life that that's actually a superficial feeling of spirituality that's not
[73:11]real spirituality spirituality is when you're productive you're meeting your obligations educational
[73:18]obligations family obligations you have a good relationship with your family that's
[73:24]what will give you true and genuine spirituality and along the same
[73:31]lines what if uh what if they would don't want to quit
[73:35]because it helps with their depression what if they don't want to
[73:38]quit if it helps with their depression now a professional can better
[73:42]answer that but basically if you're struggling with depression and the marijuana
[73:46]is helping you obviously it's not a good idea to suddenly quit
[73:52]it you need to work with a therapist and slowly transition into
[73:56]a better alternative that way you know you can manage your depression
[74:01]and you won't fall into a bigger psychological disorder so just don't
[74:08]just be content with your state okay i'm taking marijuana it's helping
[74:11]me with my depression great i'm going to take it for the
[74:16]next five years see a therapist explore other ways to treat that
[74:20]depression in a smooth way of course so i'm not saying just
[74:23]abruptly stop taking their marijuana because that could have other serious consequences
[74:28]but do look for an alternative through a good therapist and doctor
[74:33]junior you mentioned in your uh in your intro that uh the
[74:37]potency has gone up since the 60s so what's the uh what's
[74:39]causing that to go up more sophisticated biochemist entrepreneurs uh people that
[74:47]are becoming more knowledgeable with regard to how to uh cultivate harvest
[74:50]the plant how to grow the plant uh biological engineering you know
[74:56]all that okay thank you okay what are the uh also for
[75:04]you dr juni what are some of the long-term effects of chronic
[75:07]use in adults mostly um well there's two uh there's there's the
[75:14]psychological effect and there's a social effect let's talk about the social
[75:19]effect first so the social effect is there's basically diminished forward movement
[75:23]and what i mean by that is individuals struggle with productivity they
[75:28]struggle with occupational success they struggle with interpersonal relationships to people are
[75:36]typically kind of stagnant depending on what their career aspirations or what
[75:41]their social aspirations are they tend to have they tend to have
[75:44]hesitancy or they tend to be they have difficulty moving forward now
[75:48]this isn't isolated to just marijuana this is one of the hallmarks
[75:50]of drug addiction in general so we see this with alcohol addiction
[75:54]cocaine addiction open addiction so this is a universal phenomenon we see
[76:00]across all drug classes but marijuana is one of them marijuana has
[76:03]also been known to cause what has you know been referred to
[76:07]as an a motivational syndrome meaning it takes away motivation from people
[76:11]uh the psychological effects are as i mentioned in my um introductory
[76:16]comments there's imp what's been studied is that there's been impairment in
[76:22]memory in learning skills and other cognitive processes these have been slowed
[76:26]and again when we're referring here we're talking to we're talking about
[76:28]habitual chronic users but that's in general what we see with chronic
[76:35]long-term use and uh this question is for you is it okay
[76:40]to use marijuana recreationally just once just to see what it feels
[76:46]like and vow not to use it again see that's the problem
[76:52]here you think it's going to be just once right as dr
[76:55]ed said some people may have genetic factors that one time usage
[76:59]of it can kick in the addiction from a legal perspective meaning
[77:04]the fatwa of scholars islamic legal perspective they say it's haram even
[77:09]trying it once just to see how it's like their fatwa is
[77:15]very clear that this would be haram you should not do that
[77:19]and if you really really need the if you really need some
[77:25]weed this joke never gets old by the way if you really
[77:29]need some weed get some tajweed that's much better if i could
[77:37]comment on that too that i'm gonna use that i hope you
[77:40]don't mind if i use that joke i'm gonna tell my family
[77:43]when i go home um if they're not watching now um so
[77:47]firstly um yeah uh it's never once if somebody if you're thinking
[77:53]about using it once i think you're saying that to make yourself
[77:57]feel better but your plan and your intent is not to use
[77:59]it once um you want to use this to see how it's
[78:01]like and if you like it you're gonna you're gonna go ahead
[78:04]and use it again if you have a bad experience maybe you
[78:06]may not use it again but i think if you like it
[78:08]i think if you enjoy it i think if it provides you
[78:12]know a positive reinforcement for you i think you're going to be
[78:16]back dr ed would it be accurate to say that the first
[78:19]time you want to try it it's fully your choice the second
[78:26]time it may not be your choice i think that's fair yeah
[78:28]i would that be something that's fair to say yeah i think
[78:32]that that's a nice synopsis um you know i would just add
[78:36]to it i think even the first time you know depending on
[78:41]an individual's you know underlying psychology and if there's any other psychiatric
[78:45]illness sometimes even the even the first time is kind of being
[78:49]motivated by uh some underlying mental health or from social factors let
[78:52]me just explain a little bit you know as i said before
[78:57]there are some adolescents that struggle with adhd and other impulse control
[79:01]disorders where they're they're they're highly novelty seeking you know they they
[79:05]have this compulsion and this drive to seek out new and novel
[79:08]things it's certainly their choice but the footnote there is that there's
[79:12]other lying psychiatric processes that are driving that even for the first
[79:17]use the second thing is many people in the term that's been
[79:23]used is called self-medicate i don't like that term but it's used
[79:25]commonly um there there are some individuals that have such debilitating depression
[79:31]and anxiety they're willing to try anything and they're so miserable they're
[79:36]so debilitated by what they're doing is that they will go after
[79:40]whatever they can and if somebody has a joint if somebody has
[79:43]marijuana if they have alcohol whatever they're there and they're going to
[79:47]take it because they're just feeling so bad so yes it's their
[79:49]choice but there's there's other contributing you know mental health factors that
[79:54]are driving that and and something you mentioned earlier as well i
[79:57]think along those lines as well is it becomes kind of uh
[79:59]they feel like they're doing better but it becomes kind of avoidance
[80:02]right of a lot of other things and they're not really yeah
[80:05]doing better and feeling better is what we call a subjective report
[80:09]um yeah i mean if i ask people to use heroin i
[80:12]say how do you use how do you feel and use heroin
[80:13]they're gonna say i feel fine i feel good uh so saying
[80:17]you're feeling good that that's not that doesn't mean that this is
[80:21]a therapy a lot of things we do make us feel good
[80:24]it doesn't mean that it's a good thing uh so what we
[80:25]look at when we're gauging the effectiveness of something whether it be
[80:30]a drug or any other therapy is that we're looking at you
[80:33]know you look we're looking at your functionality we're looking at your
[80:35]productivity and we're looking at are you doing the things that you
[80:40]want to do um so again just the report that this had
[80:43]this helps yeah we're we're happy to see that but we need
[80:49]to see more in order to call it a treatment for uh
[80:51]you know we see a lot of times especially now there's more
[80:54]uh escapism where people are trying to kind of escape reality and
[80:59]they're doing that by you know maybe binge watching shows or or
[81:03]you know listening to music in certain ways where they're you know
[81:09]the big headphones and they're just uh kind of entranced in that
[81:13]world uh what is islamic view on on that on kind of
[81:16]escaping reality especially for you know long periods of time my dear
[81:22]brothers and sisters it's never a solution to escape from reality until
[81:28]one do you want to escape the reality at what cost a
[81:34]believer always tries to deal with the reality in a positive way
[81:38]to address the difficulty of the reality number one know that you
[81:46]have a lord who's managing the entire universe don't lose hope there
[81:50]is a purpose for you some people feel unworthy what am i
[81:54]doing here in this life what's my purpose know that a lord
[81:58]who created this entire universe and who's managing this entire universe created
[82:05]you there's a purpose feel safe with allah subhana wa ta'ala sometimes
[82:08]you just need to remind yourself that everything has a purpose in
[82:13]this universe you also have one find that purpose and allah subhanahu
[82:18]wa ta'ala will give you that strength if you're suffering if in
[82:23]your if you're in pain don't take that as a sign that
[82:25]allah is not with you he's angry at you look at the
[82:30]greatest people the closest people to allah subhanahu wa ta'ala they experienced
[82:35]suffering they experienced pain and they brought themselves to thank god in
[82:41]pain see the beauty of the system of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala
[82:44]difficulty and suffering is an opportunity for you to become stronger it's
[82:50]an opportunity for you to appreciate the blessings of life it's an
[82:56]opportunity for you to prepare yourself for the hereafter so do something
[83:01]productive my dear brothers and sisters when you are going through difficulty
[83:04]try not to escape it but address it deal with it so
[83:11]some recommendations be more involved in your community see if there is
[83:17]an organization in your community an opportunity to volunteer to connect with
[83:21]other brothers and sisters that really helps it helps a lot i
[83:26]know a young man who suffered from anxiety and depression and that's
[83:29]exactly what he did he's in canada in his community he became
[83:34]very active he did not allow himself to waste any time and
[83:38]slowly allah lifted him out of that state so it's possible you
[83:44]may not see the light at the end of the tunnel but
[83:46]realize you have a lord who is controlling the entire universe he
[83:50]will help you thank you so let's do one more question and
[83:55]then we can uh open it up to the audience here to
[84:00]ask um dr uh juni this is for you um let me
[84:04]see if i can find it here so this is for um
[84:07]if someone is using marijuana i think i can't find it right
[84:13]now but if someone uses it um and they stop at 25
[84:16]will they have the urge to use again maybe at like 30
[84:19]40 later in life if they have a true marijuana addiction yes
[84:23]unfortunately in most cases of again with drug addiction or you know
[84:29]what professionally is known as substance use disorders these are chronic long-term
[84:36]relapsing and remitting illnesses now of course there are going to be
[84:39]exceptions but for the majority of the cases if somebody struggles with
[84:43]a drug addiction this is a chronic and in some cases a
[84:46]lifelong problem an individual will always carry the vulnerability with them so
[84:51]when we see individuals regardless of what substance they're using if they're
[84:54]addicted to alcohol if they're addicted to opiates sedatives cocaine the treatment
[84:59]is lifelong abstinence so if somebody truly has a marijuana disorder if
[85:03]someone truly has a marijuana addiction they have to abstain from the
[85:07]drug for the rest of their life because they will always carry
[85:10]that vulnerability and continued utilization will result in compulsive use even if
[85:14]it's five to ten years later now granted there are exceptions but
[85:18]i'm just saying just as a general rule so that would be
[85:20]the advice that i would give somebody that was coming into my
[85:21]clinic okay thank you so does anyone in the audience have any
[85:26]questions they want to ask directly yeah go ahead can you elaborate
[85:38]isn't i i didn't hear the question the same concept isn't it
[85:45]like marijuana also addicted yeah yes absolutely uh nicotine is highly addictive
[85:50]uh nicotine is a drug um obviously when somebody is smoking cigarettes
[85:56]that's essentially what they're doing it is a nicotine addiction um so
[86:00]yes some of the biological factors are the same with regard to
[86:05]the processes that are involved in the drug addiction itself but the
[86:08]two drugs have different psychological profiles nicotine is a mild stimulant marijuana
[86:14]is more of what we call like a more of a euphoric
[86:18]drug it's calming it's anti-anxiety nicotine is a mild stimulant but yes
[86:22]nicotine can cause an addiction just like marijuana and you know i
[86:28]told you that about what it was around 10 percent of people
[86:30]that smoke marijuana are going to develop a marijuana addiction over 30
[86:35]percent of people that smoke cigarettes are going to develop nicotine addiction
[86:40]another question is that's my father it's actually um it's actually what's
[87:17]it called um pardon me whippets um nitric oxide it's a nitrogen
[87:24]containing compound yeah yeah i know exactly we're talking about yeah family
[87:32]you don't realize the whole thing because i just haven't been doing
[87:36]this for four years with all the depth of fixing out of
[87:42]the hospital out of america you know what's going on yeah so
[87:51]um thank you so yeah so so that's a very good point
[87:55]um a very good question what the hajj was referring to is
[88:02]they're called whippets you can buy them at head shops i don't
[88:05]think gas stations have them do they maybe some of them do
[88:08]but these are nitrogen containing things they are highly addictive i saw
[88:14]a guy he's actually he's actually a medical provider who became highly
[88:19]addicted to these and was using 500 a day so that being
[88:25]said there's a lot of things out there i mean we were
[88:28]talking about marijuana and opiates there's a whole lot of stuff out
[88:33]there that is highly addictive uh just go to walgreens i can
[88:36]show you what's has addictive potential there there's the cough suppressants there's
[88:41]dextromethorphan um there's doxylamine which is a sedating antihistamine that's a nyquil
[88:48]and other over-the-counter sleep remedies there's benadryl which can which can have
[88:53]a substance use problem so there's a lot of things out there
[88:57]that you can buy just at your local drug score that can
[89:00]be a little bit dangerous in the wrong hands other questions go
[89:09]ahead so that's a good question so the services that we provide
[89:28]so i work at um the university of michigan's addiction treatment services
[89:32]that's an outpatient clinic so it's outpatient we do not have inpatient
[89:38]treatment we offer outpatient care so they would come in they would
[89:44]have an assessment and then we would either you know retain them
[89:49]in the clinic for an outpatient program or if we feel they
[89:52]need inpatient care then we would need to send them out we
[89:54]would need to send them to an inpatient facility and there's many
[89:58]in southeastern michigan there's the brighton center for recovery there's henry ford
[90:04]maple grove there's dawn farm i can go on so our program
[90:07]is just outpatient and if they what we do is we evaluate
[90:11]and we determine what's called a level of care meaning we determine
[90:15]do they just need outpatient or do they need something like you
[90:19]mentioned do they need to go somewhere for two to three months
[90:22]so we'll make that determination and you'll make the referral right we'll
[90:26]make the referral but i i need to tell you and this
[90:29]is a whole other talk is that you know the majority time
[90:31]when we recommend inpatient or we recommend a long-term program people don't
[90:37]go and they don't want to go and that's a whole other
[90:39]thing so it's not you know i'm giving you the reality it's
[90:42]not like we see these patients and i say you know you
[90:45]need to get into a 90-day program and they're going to say
[90:46]oh fantastic you know i got my bags packed you know let
[90:50]me put the address into my phone and i'm on my way
[90:54]no it's not like that it's like i'm not going and if
[90:56]you have the family in the office it turns into an interesting
[90:59]dynamic so getting people into treatment is challenging it's not easy and
[91:04]for those of you that have walked in those shoes you know
[91:07]what i'm talking about so i don't want to give a false
[91:08]perception i don't want to say that oh if you have a
[91:11]drug problem get into treatment it's not easy it's not easy at
[91:17]all and you know it can be challenging it's you know it's
[91:23]it's a long process yes just turn the back can you speak
[91:41]a little louder um uh i can comment on the medical side
[92:19]of it i'm not aware of any beauty product that actually has
[92:23]thc in it um and i'm also not aware she she said
[92:26]cbd is right yes cbd okay i even i'm not aware of
[92:31]any and again i learned something every time i come to one
[92:34]of these so i learned about the wax pen and i just
[92:36]learned about beauty products that contain cbd so thank you as well
[92:40]i i have a lot of things to take back to the
[92:43]clinic on monday um but i i've so uh this is new
[92:48]to me um if it has cbd oil in it it should
[92:51]not cause any significant adverse effects uh i mean you know cbduille
[92:55]is a therapeutic that's typically utilized for pain management i don't know
[92:58]what it does for with regard i don't know what it's doing
[93:00]in a beauty product but as far as i know i i
[93:05]i that's the most i can comment on because i've never heard
[93:09]of this before i think there's a part for you as well
[93:11]say well basically if medically we can you know assess cbd oil
[93:17]and it's determined that it's not really having a harmful impact it's
[93:21]not altering the brain then there shouldn't there should not be any
[93:26]negative spiritual impacts so it would be fine assuming that that is
[93:32]the case of course yes go ahead um that's a very good
[94:08]question let's say you've done something in the past whether it's an
[94:11]addiction or something else that negatively impacted your spirituality what can you
[94:18]do to regain your spirituality number one get that out of the
[94:22]way whether it was the addiction try to treat it or it's
[94:25]a sin that you committed ask allah to forgive you for it
[94:29]that's the first step the second step is to compensate how do
[94:35]you compensate do more good deeds with the intention to ask allah
[94:41]subhanahu wa ta'ala to give you back that spirituality that's why imam
[94:48]ali ibn abi al-islam in one narration when he talks about tawba
[94:51]the proper steps to take when you want to repent the imam
[94:56]alaihi salam states look tawba is a process it starts in the
[95:01]heart you feel regretful you ask allah to forgive you number two
[95:04]those body parts that you used to sin use them for good
[95:12]deeds if you used your eyes to sin that negatively impacted your
[95:17]spirituality you want to gain it back use your eyes in god's
[95:21]obedience read the quran read something that's beneficial increase your education look
[95:27]at your parents with the hadith states that's an act of ibadah
[95:31]see that's how you compensate you did you committed a sin with
[95:35]your tongue with your hands with your feet by going somewhere that's
[95:38]haram you can compensate by using your time and your body parts
[95:44]in the path of allah and make the intention oh allah i
[95:49]committed that sin i was addicted to x y and z now
[95:52]i've addressed it i will offer these good deeds i'll pay this
[95:57]charity i'll offer this prayer so that you compensate and allah will
[96:01]compensate for that go ahead go ahead brother does so i'll go
[96:34]ahead and answer the first question lifestyle would be just to take
[96:40]care of yourself and if ensuring that you're in a good place
[96:44]emotionally mentally understanding your family history so if there's a family history
[96:50]of drug or alcohol addiction you need to be mindful of that
[96:55]if there's a very strong family history or you have risk factors
[96:57]for some type of a drug addiction and you're being prescribed a
[97:01]painkiller you need to be mindful of that you need to be
[97:03]mindful of the way the drug is going to affect you it's
[97:06]important to share that with your treating provider who's ever treating you
[97:10]but other than that other than ensuring that you're healthy physically and
[97:16]emotionally that's probably the best thing that you can do for yourself
[97:22]to address the second part of your question when we examine the
[97:28]hadiths of peace be upon them we come to realize that the
[97:32]imams have added bait the prophet to avoid medications by eating healthy
[97:42]that's why one narration states that the root cause of most diseases
[97:45]is what you eat what you put in your stomach that's the
[97:50]root cause of most diseases so islam tells you don't put yourself
[97:54]in a situation where you have to seek medication try to prevent
[98:00]it by eating less overeating leads to diseases by eating healthy foods
[98:05]if you look at the narrations of added bait they have actually
[98:08]recommended to us a healthy diet what's healthy to eat how often
[98:13]should we eat this is all mentioned by the imams of bait
[98:16]you can find them and access them in books like for instance
[98:21]the medicine of the imams having said that the imams of alibaba
[98:25]were not against medicine in fact many times they would recommend certain
[98:31]herbs because at the time they didn't really have chemical med medication
[98:35]they had medication that were that was taken from herbs so the
[98:40]imams would recommend them to people when they were struggling with a
[98:43]medical condition they would come to the imam you'll find that the
[98:47]imam alayhi salaam you would actually prescribe to them the proper medication
[98:51]that would work for them but mainly it was herbs so islam
[98:54]is not against medication if you are ill and you need medication
[98:59]you have to seek that allah is the healer but you also
[99:03]need to seek the proper means but islam teaches you you can
[99:09]avoid putting yourself in those situations either through your diet through your
[99:13]lifestyle as well you know a lot of the depression that we
[99:16]are experiencing today a lot of the loneliness that we are experiencing
[99:22]today is because of our lifestyle when you're addicted to your gadgets
[99:24]right there is no face-to-face human interaction you see a family they're
[99:32]in the family room right supposedly having a quality time when everyone's
[99:37]just looking at their phones they're going through their facebook page they're
[99:40]seeing tick tock videos and it becomes an addiction social media is
[99:46]an addiction sometimes worse than drug addiction i know some people who
[99:50]will spend eight ten hours a day on social media and studies
[99:55]have shown that using social media too much excessively leaves you with
[100:00]a feeling of depression leaves you with a feeling of loneliness so
[100:04]islam teaches us have a healthy lifestyle you will avoid a lot
[100:10]of that can we have just do anyone has one last question
[100:21]unfortunately i don't have a card but i can give you a
[100:26]phone number okay um so the number to our clinic i'll say
[100:32]this though um i think for a minute um 734 so that's
[100:44]the department of psychiatry at michigan medicine and what you want to
[100:49]ask for is you want to ask for an appointment with the
[100:53]addiction treatment services you're welcome so i think we'll end there actually
[101:00]so i want to thank our speakers today dr ed juni thank
[101:04]you very much for coming today doctor thank you and uh thank
[101:08]you very much thank you and thank you to all of you
