[0:01]that's a prayer that the prophet's making and allah and he made

[0:10]that dua you support ali guaranteed allah will support you and on

[0:16]the day of ghadir we explore ways by which we can support

[0:22]the message of imam ali now my dear brothers and sisters in

[0:26]our discussion tonight first we'll present a brief historical analysis of how

[0:33]the prophet gave the speech and then we'll analyze excerpts of this

[0:38]speech many of us are not familiar with this very important sermon

[0:45]of the prophet so on tonight in our discussion we'll present a

[0:49]brief analysis of the sermon of ghadir so how did this speech

[0:55]how did this sermon how did this declaration come into being the

[1:00]prophet salallahu alaihi several months before he passed away he was instructed

[1:08]by allah to mobilize all muslims to go to the hajj so

[1:12]the prophet made an announcement any muslim who hears my call and

[1:17]who is able to go to the hajj that year come come

[1:19]to the hajj so look at the divine way by which god

[1:26]is already setting up for this announcement because the best occasion to

[1:31]have all muslims gather is at the hajj you'll have hundreds of

[1:36]thousands of people who will come to the hajj the prophet went

[1:39]to the pilgrimage along with over a hundred thousand muslims and this

[1:43]is called hajjat al-wada the final pilgrimage that the prophet made now

[1:49]the prophet was in arafah when he wanted to make this announcement

[1:55]he gathered the people the prophet started his sermon then he started

[2:02]to allude to the bait he told them that there are leaders

[2:06]after me twelve imams after me and the prophet was setting the

[2:12]stage to announce imam ali salam but do you know what happened

[2:17]this is history my dear brothers and sisters there was such a

[2:22]huge commotion the meccans cut him off they started yelling and screaming

[2:26]to the point where the people couldn't hear the prophet anymore companions

[2:33]have narrated this event that's because mecca was the stronghold of those

[2:41]arabs who had enmity towards imam ali they waged so many wars

[2:50]against the prophet who was the number one defender they had lost

[2:54]many of their relatives at the sword of imam ali so the

[2:59]meccans could not stand accepting imam ali they simply could not accept

[3:05]that they had that enmity they had that hatred so jibril tells

[3:12]the prophet sallallahu alaihi postponed the announcement wait for a better opportunity

[3:18]so the prophet salallahu alaihi ends his speech he's very disturbed that

[3:23]they dis that they did this to him then after the hajj

[3:26]the prophet marches north he's going back to medina he reaches a

[3:31]very important intersection a pathway travelers would usually pass by that area

[3:35]it's called joffa jibril tells the prophet go to a place there

[3:45]is an oasis by jaffa it's not too far from that place

[3:48]and you should camp there now in arabic when you have an

[3:53]oasis of water in the desert what do you call that in

[3:57]arabic if you have like a ponding of water in the middle

[4:02]of the desert what is that called radir that's the meaning of

[4:05]the linguistic meaning of ghadir is basically an oasis of water so

[4:11]there was a well-known oasis at an area called home that oasis

[4:21]is called people travelers recognized the prophet went there and he camped

[4:26]for three days the prophet made an announcement he said those travelers

[4:34]the judge the pilgrims let's wait for them to gather here bring

[4:40]them here and those who were ahead of us in their journey

[4:42]call them back tell them to come back told the prophet this

[4:47]is the place for you to make that announcement so now imagine

[4:51]the third day you have over a hundred thousand companions gathered at

[4:59]the oasis of ghadir it was a very hot day the all

[5:05]the companions remember how hot it was and subhanallah there is a

[5:08]divine wisdom behind that so no one forgets that event so now

[5:12]you're gathering all these companions over a hundred thousand of them under

[5:16]the hot scorching sun already the people knew a very important announcement

[5:22]is going to come from the prophet because this is unprecedented no

[5:26]time in history that the prophet gathers so many of his companions

[5:32]in one place just to deliver a sermon to them but this

[5:35]was by the instruction of allah dear brothers and sisters this was

[5:42]the setup of gadir today we have so many narrations in our

[5:45]shia and sunni books that confirm this event and that the prophet

[5:52]sallallahu alaihi made an announcement about imam ali there's no doubt about

[5:57]this event you'll find some ignorant people trying to reject that this

[6:02]event happened today but we have sunni scholars like he's a historian

[6:09]he's a scholar he's an exegete professor of the quran you know

[6:13]what he says he says i did my own research i found

[6:17]400 sources for ghadir 400 sources not one not two not three

[6:23]but four hundred and that's what has survived throughout history by the

[6:29]way he makes a comment here he says even though i've gathered

[6:34]400 references and sources for ghadir i still feel uneasy about it

[6:40]i don't know what to say about that you have 400 sources

[6:44]he's still not comfortable because he knows the truth isn't that now

[6:49]today there are some muslims who say from other schools of thought

[6:52]they say yeah but it's not mentioned in bukhari because it's not

[6:57]mentioned in bukhari i'm not going to accept this event my dear

[7:01]brothers and sisters if an event has 400 sources and today we

[7:07]have the hadith of 110 companions who said i've witnessed the event

[7:14]of ghadir what does that indicate does that mean that there's a

[7:21]problem in gadir whether it happened or not or that shows you

[7:24]there's a problem in bukhari if you the author of bukhari you've

[7:30]left out an event that hundreds of companions witnessed and you have

[7:35]the reports and yet you did not mention it there's a problem

[7:38]in not in the event of when you have all these narrations

[7:43]about this event so there is no shadow of doubt that the

[7:46]event of khadir did happen and today our sources are inundated with

[7:52]references to let's now my dear brothers and sisters analyze the sermon

[8:00]of the hadir because it's the most unique sermon the prophet gave

[8:05]do you know how long the sermon of ghadir took usually the

[8:11]prophet's sermons were brief you know like the friday prayers the other

[8:16]sermons on average they were 5 minutes 10 minutes sometimes 20 minutes

[8:21]not like our speeches we go on and on and on for

[8:26]45 minutes and bore you the prophet kept it brief he'd speak

[8:31]for just a few minutes sometimes because people at the time they

[8:34]were just learning about islam they had a short attention span the

[8:37]prophet would teach them the basics but this sermon is at least

[8:45]one hour long for an entire hour the prophet sallallahu alaihi spoke

[8:50]to his companions gives us the full text of that speech various

[8:57]parts of that speech have been documented in various sources gives us

[9:04]the full text my dear brothers and sisters read the text of

[9:09]eid ada sermon it's a fascinating beautiful sermon that the prophet gave

[9:12]now imagine is standing on a pulpit a makeshift pulpit they brought

[9:20]this platform they raised it the prophet is standing on this platform

[9:25]he's looking at over a hundred thousand of his companions there was

[9:30]a another platform to the right it was also slightly raised but

[9:36]a little bit less than the prophet imam salam was standing on

[9:41]that platform everyone is now seeing the prophet gave the sermon i'd

[9:45]like to walk you through some passages of the sermon the prophet

[9:50]sallallahu alaihi starts his sermon by glorifying the almighty allah and praising

[9:56]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala amongst the words that the prophet said in

[10:02]the opening passage of his sermon he's talking about about allah he

[10:07]says allah is the one who gave you your origin boob everything

[10:19]goes back to allah and everything goes back to allah look at

[10:24]the beautiful words of the prophet make sure that you center your

[10:29]life around the almighty god because he is the starting point he

[10:32]is the end point everyone shall go back to allah subhanahu wa

[10:38]ta'ala are you ready for that meeting with your lord then the

[10:42]prophet says one of the names of god is asabu he's patient

[10:53]allah subhanahu ta'ala does not quickly deliver his revenge sometimes don't you

[11:00]get frustrated you see people around you they commit wrongdoing could be

[11:07]a friend family member you've been hurt you've been violated or you

[11:13]look at oppressors around the world and all the injustice and you're

[11:17]like what is god waiting for why don't you seek revenge from

[11:21]that person that's the system of allah allah subhanahu ta'ala doesn't quickly

[11:26]deliver revenge why two quick reasons number one it's a trial imagine

[11:33]if every time you did something bad boom you get hit with

[11:38]something allah hits you with something where's the trial where's the test

[11:40]we definitely all be disciplined and we'd behave allah gives you room

[11:46]some flexibility to try you to test you he does seek revenge

[11:49]but it could be after a while number two my dear brothers

[11:55]and sisters allah is giving you time to repent sometimes we tend

[11:59]to see others as evil and there's no chance for them i've

[12:02]heard one of my friends he said if that person on the

[12:07]day of judgment who wronged me if that person is forgiven and

[12:10]he'll go to paradise well i'm not going to put my feet

[12:15]in paradise with that person habibi don't limit the mercy of allah

[12:18]allah's mercy is so vast you yourself you have faults i have

[12:25]faults and i expect allah to forgive me sometimes allah doesn't quickly

[12:29]deliver the vengeance the revenge the discipline to give you a chance

[12:36]maybe you repent maybe you re-examine what you're doing but yes it's

[12:41]a trial and some others allah gives them more time so they

[12:46]do more evil so he punishes them more so the prophet salallahu

[12:50]alaihi beautifully states that in a sermon then he said allah knows

[12:57]what's in your heart i can keep what's in my heart from

[13:03]you you may not know what i'm thinking what i'm planning my

[13:05]feelings what am i doing but allah knows that keep that in

[13:10]mind sometimes we forget that allah is really with us ever present

[13:14]with us allah knows what's in your intentions then the prophet then

[13:20]the prophet salallahu alaihi states is the one who gave rise and

[13:32]existing existence to things when there was nothing look at this vast

[13:36]universe my dear brothers and sisters there was one point where there

[13:40]was nothing no time no space no galaxy no universe allah subhanahu

[13:45]ta'ala is the one who created something out of nothing and that's

[13:52]the great miracle of allah subhanahu ta'ala we human beings all we

[13:56]can do is rearrange the elements around us we've never been able

[14:00]to create something out of pure nothing that is the miracle of

[14:05]allah subhanahu ta'ala another beautiful aspect of allah's creation is that he

[14:14]created his creation and he gave it its form an image without

[14:21]looking at any previous example meaning allah invented everything isn't that amazing

[14:27]just look at the human being how allah subhanahu ta'ala has given

[14:32]you your physical appearance allah invented that isn't that amazing sometimes you

[14:39]wonder subhanallah the knowledge of god the wisdom of god the power

[14:43]of god for him to invent all these things all these senses

[14:46]we have five senses right can you really think and grasp a

[14:53]sixth sense can you these five senses that you have can you

[14:57]describe them to someone who doesn't have them no that's what they're

[15:02]trying someone who's born blind let's say can you tell them what

[15:07]colors are red white blue you can't you can try to use

[15:10]words but you cannot see how we're limited with these senses that

[15:14]we have and we experience and we feel allah invented them out

[15:20]of nothing and on the day of judgment in heaven allah subhanahu

[15:25]ta'ala is going to give us new senses for infinity that's the

[15:28]power of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala so the prophet is setting the

[15:33]stage by teaching the people about the oneness of allah he says

[15:44]i swear he's the one lord whose purity has filled the entire

[15:50]universe beautiful description by the prophet he says the purity of god

[15:56]think of that godz is purity al-qudoos is the one who's pure

[16:04]it's one of the names of allah subhanahu wa the purity of

[16:07]god the goodness of god has filled the entire universe everything in

[16:12]the universe is goodness it's only us the human beings we the

[16:16]human beings when we decide to commit a wrong act that's evil

[16:22]when we reject the goodness of allah otherwise allah has created everything

[16:28]in purity everything in goodness then the prophet salallahu teaches us that

[16:36]we're just servants of allah whatever we hear god commanding us we

[16:41]obey i'm nothing but a servant in fact the prophet says the

[16:48]way i am with god if i feel god wants something from

[16:53]me i rush towards it even if he does not explicitly ask

[16:57]me have you seen sometimes you know your parents want something they

[17:01]don't tell you they don't ask you but you feel like they

[17:05]want something the hadith says when it comes to your parents jump

[17:08]to serve them before they ask you that's a good son and

[17:17]a good daughter according to islamic law even before they ask you

[17:19]you know your dad wants something your mind wants needs something you

[17:23]go and fulfill it for them the prophet says that's how we

[17:26]are with allah if i feel like god wants something from me

[17:32]i jump are we like that today my dear brothers and sisters

[17:35]these days we have to drag ourselves salah which is the pillar

[17:40]of faith i have to drag myself right when it comes to

[17:44]fulfilling my financial obligations whether it's zakat holmes i have to force

[17:51]myself when it comes to music entertainment all these aspects i have

[17:56]to drag myself and force myself the prophet says be eager jump

[18:02]that's a true servant of allah subhanahu ta'ala have you seen people

[18:07]in love it's fascinating teaches you a lot about life have you

[18:12]seen someone one brother once told me you know fallen in love

[18:15]very severe depressing love you know what he told me it's fascinating

[18:21]though he said say it i had my iphone whenever i would

[18:26]get a notification notification right i don't know who it's from my

[18:31]heart would jump literally i could feel my heart jumping out of

[18:38]my chest why because there's a possibility it could be her and

[18:44]then when you hear these narrations about the imams before adam jumping

[18:48]someone's like come on that's too extreme how maybe with a fellow

[18:52]human being you understand that and you do that you fall into

[18:55]that and allah is the source of all goodness the source of

[18:58]all love the source of all beauty in the universe the prophet

[19:01]says that's who a true servant is he jumps to honor the

[19:07]command of allah so now the prophet is setting the stage in

[19:11]the first part of his sermon let's now transition into the next

[19:16]part in the next part of the sermon the prophet sallallahu alaihi

[19:18]states the prophet now draws the attention of the companions to the

[19:37]main reason why he's giving them the sermon he told them my

[19:43]companions god has ordered me something if i do not convey it

[19:48]allah would consider me as one who has betrayed his message and

[19:52]it's as if i have not fulfilled the message of god and

[19:55]that announcement is about ali now imagine over a hundred thousand the

[20:01]prophet is on an elevated platform next to him they're standing everyone's

[20:06]watching them suddenly now that people know okay this is about imam

[20:12]ali he's going to make an announcement about ali then he recited

[20:18]verse 67 of surat but then the prophet says i anticipate there's

[20:29]going to be opposition i know some of you are not comfortable

[20:32]with this announcement i know some of you are jealous of ali

[20:38]because he has the virtues because he's qualified i know that however

[20:43]this is the command of allah i have to convey it even

[20:47]though i know there's going to be resistance there's going to be

[20:49]opposition but i have to convey this message from the almighty god

[20:55]then the imam then the prophet sallallahu alaihi in the third part

[20:59]of his sermon then after him there's going to be a line

[21:27]of imams you have to follow them until you meet allah subhanahu

[21:32]ta'ala so we see now clearly the prophet also informs his ummah

[21:36]of the imams who will come from his progeny and the progeny

[21:41]of imam ali ibn absalam don't give preference to others why for

[22:01]there is no knowledge given to me by allah except that i

[22:06]gave that knowledge to ali he's the most knowledgeable he's the most

[22:12]qualified follow him i'm not asking you to follow ali because he's

[22:16]my cousin or son-in-law no because he has the knowledge he's the

[22:19]most qualified he knows what he's doing then the prophet alaihi tells

[22:27]us how trustworthy is he says i can commanded ali on behalf

[22:35]of allah and he and i asked ali on the night of

[22:42]the migration to sleep in my bed so he did in other

[22:44]words the prophet is telling his companions who other than ali did

[22:52]i put my full trust in i put my full faith in

[22:56]imagine it's critical 40 men had gathered to assassinate the prophet on

[23:01]that night the prophet goes to imam ali he did not go

[23:04]to other companions he goes to ali and ali at this point

[23:09]was not his son-in-law yet he was not married in mecca imam

[23:12]ali married in medina he told him ali i have a secret

[23:16]jubilee told me that tonight they're going to they're going to try

[23:19]to assassinate me are you willing to sleep in my bed if

[23:23]the prophet entrusted imam ali in such critical moments my dear brothers

[23:29]and sisters how did the ummah entrust others when it came to

[23:34]critical events like isn't this injustice and disobedience to the prophet the

[23:39]prophet whenever he was in danger he wouldn't trust ali ibn habib

[23:43]al islam not anybody else but unfortunately this is what the ummah

[23:48]did are with the quran they shall never separate just as the

[24:02]quran is infallible my albeit are infallible these are the first three

[24:08]parts of the sermon in the fourth part the prophet said that

[24:11]famous announcement that you've all memorized in the fourth part the prophet

[24:18]salallahu alaihi asked all the muslims do i not have a greater

[24:24]right over you than your own self because that's mentioned they said

[24:32]you have a greater right over us you have authority and guardianship

[24:37]over us so the prophet says so you all admit they said

[24:44]yes at that point the prophet raised i am is maula his

[25:04]guardian whomever i have authority over ali ibn abi talib is his

[25:09]mala and guardian and the prophet made that famous prayer allah befriend

[25:17]and support whoever befriends and supports ali and oh allah be the

[25:24]enemy of whoever shows enmity to ali so when you look at

[25:28]the hadir sermon these are only the first four parts there are

[25:32]seven more parts my dear brothers and sisters remember it's an hour

[25:36]long sermon seven more parts to the sermon of ada we don't

[25:41]have time to analyze those seven parts but the prophet warns this

[25:45]ummah that if you abandon ali this will be in chaos until

[25:51]my grandson the mahdi is going to come and fill the world

[25:57]with justice and the idol sermon the prophet even mentions his grandson

[26:03]the mahdi so the prophet gave that hour-long sermon and then after

[26:10]that there were two tents in one tent was the prophet there

[26:14]was another tent raised for imam ali the companions came over a

[26:20]hundred thousand of them they entered the tent of the prophet they

[26:23]congratulated him when they congratulated him the prophet told them go to

[26:31]the tent of ali congratulate him all of them came my dear

[26:34]brothers and sisters and they congratulated imam ali the sunni historian and

[26:44]scholar he says and he told him congratulations o ali bravo ali

[26:55]you have now become my mawla my master and the mawla of

[26:58]all believers all of them gave him the allegiance at hadir my

[27:04]dear brothers and sisters on the day of judgement there's no excuses

[27:09]and then when the man came it was the turn of the

[27:16]woman to give baya yes women were also present on the day

[27:18]of lady fatima was there some of the wives of the prophet

[27:23]were there thousands of other muslim women were there now obviously the

[27:27]men they would shake hands to give bay'ah but the women don't

[27:31]shake hands with someone who is not maharan to them so the

[27:33]prophet said bring a container of water put a curtain between it

[27:41]on one side stand on the other side the woman will come

[27:46]imam ali salam will dip his hand into the water and the

[27:49]woman on the other side of the bucket they will put their

[27:52]hands in that bucket and they tell him we have now given

[27:57]you the allegiance of william and that's how the woman also participated

[28:00]in this beautiful ceremony in short my dear brothers and sisters that's

[28:08]already we commemorate number one because allah tells us to it's the

[28:16]command of allah to follow after the prophet number two by commemorating

[28:25]we are reminding ourselves of the pure leadership after the prophet sallallahu

[28:32]alaihi today if you want your life to change if you want

[28:36]to be on the path of allah change your lifestyle for the

[28:44]better learn from the lessons of imam looked at other people his

[28:49]sincerity for the almighty god how imam alibi judged other people ruled

[28:57]other people the compassion that he had for others you know today

[29:01]in the west western countries they boast about their welfare system social

[29:06]security medicaid you name it instituted this 14 centuries ago during those

[29:13]four years that he ruled imam alibn told his governors that there

[29:17]are categories of people i want you to put them on the

[29:23]muslim treasury the public funds the imam mentions them by name a

[29:26]woman who's a widow there's no one to take care of her

[29:29]he tells his governor malik al-ashtar give her a monthly salary don't

[29:34]let anyone exploit her take advantage of her you have someone who's

[29:40]disabled they have a disease long-term disease put them on the payroll

[29:44]those people who are stuck in severe poverty put them on the

[29:48]payroll this is imam ali he was so sensitive my dear brothers

[29:56]and sisters when it came to his own self you're all familiar

[29:59]with the candle example of imam look at today unfortunately how there

[30:04]are many people in positions of power and they squander the resources

[30:09]one day a man came to see him told him it was

[30:15]at night in the evening dark the imam told him is this

[30:18]a personal matter that you have with me or does it concern

[30:21]muslims he said to the imam no it's a personal issue there

[30:26]was a candle next to imam ali how much does a candle

[30:30]cost a candle the imam blew the candle he turned it off

[30:36]it's dark now the man was surprised he told them ali why

[30:41]did you put out the candle the imam salam said this candle

[30:45]was purchased from the public treasury and you said you have a

[30:52]personal matter i cannot use something that belongs to all muslims for

[30:55]a personal issue that's why i put it out this is how

[31:00]sensitive he was when he was the caliph he had millions under

[31:07]his disposal but that's the example that he showed people my dear

[31:11]brothers and sisters with allah he had the best relationship and masjid

[31:16]al-khufa at night the imam ali salam had a nightly habit at

[31:20]night he would sit and cry and speak to allah he was

[31:24]busy there were wars waged against him he was really tired but

[31:29]those moments at night were the moments that energized you know sometimes

[31:34]you just need something to refresh you energize you some of you

[31:38]could be that coffee right that just energizes you two shots of

[31:42]espresso it was at night he'd spend moments with his lord he'd

[31:51]be energized for the whole day because at night read them my

[31:54]dear brothers and sisters allah he says for that day where nothing

[32:14]is going to help me no wealth no children [Music] except if

[32:25]on that day you come with a pure heart well they sound

[32:30]hard on that day that good heart is going to save you

[32:36]the imam would say this and he would cry oh allah i

[32:38]ask you for safety on that day when the oppressors will bite

[32:44]at their hands they would say oh god we wish we'd have

[32:47]followed your path we wish we would not surround ourselves with bad

[32:53]friends who caused us to deviate from the path peer pressure the

[32:57]negative influence of friends imam and you would actually cry about that

[33:02]so on my dear brothers and sisters we uphold the legacy of

[33:10]imam let's read about the imam is this treasure of knowledge study

[33:15]it read it it will purify your heart illuminate your mind it

[33:19]will show you how to be a good person in this world

[33:21]how to prepare for the akhirah so my dear brothers and sisters

[33:28]i sincerely congratulate you on the beautiful occasion of eid al ghadir

[33:32]tomorrow there's many don't miss them fasting tomorrow is equivalent to fasting

[33:39]60 years wanted of 60 years of fasting allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[33:46]fast tomorrow and there's books you can find them there's a prayer

[33:54]there's a salah that you do close to noon because it was

[33:59]around the time of noon when the prophet declared imam ali as

[34:03]a successor if you do that prayer and you say that dua

[34:05]after it the hadith states it's as if you were there on

[34:10]ghadir and you gave baya so tomorrow there is many try to

[34:18]do some of them spend a few minutes to observe tomorrow celebrate

[34:21]it with your family and friends talk about how imam ali has

[34:25]changed your life what can you learn from the legacy of imam

[34:28]ali and how can we use the legacy of imam ali today

[34:30]in our 21st century to achieve progress and to better ourselves so

[34:36]my dear brothers and sisters i congratulate you on this event of

[34:43]and truly truly we are infinitely thankful to allah subhanahu wa ta'ala

[34:50]that he has given us if you're down things are going bad

[34:57]for you remember allah has given you a treasure greater than the

[35:00]universe that's the one of his companions he was down depressed going

[35:18]through trouble financial trouble the imam told him what's the matter he

[35:24]said i'm poor yep i'm poor i'm suffering from poverty asked him

[35:30]an interesting question the imam told him you have faith in allah

[35:35]right and the prophet and the alibi he said yes of course

[35:37]the imam told him are you willing to sell your faith if

[35:41]you could theoretically are you willing to sell it for a hundred

[35:45]thousand golden coins dinars at the time a hundred thousand golden pure

[35:52]gold coins he said no i'm not the imam told him how

[35:55]dare you consider yourself poor when you own something more valuable than

[36:02]a hundred thousand golden coins you're not willing to sell it don't
