[12:11]the program please visit the table to learn more and see inshallah
[12:16]how we could possibly help an award winning poet public speaker data
[12:33]scientist and activist sayed shabir karmani will be presenting the english presentation
[12:41]the syed is currently pursuing his phd at the university of central
[12:47]florida with a background in engineering mathematics and computer science and so
[12:54]please help me in welcoming sayyid shabir with a loud salawat alayam
[12:59]muhammadu alai muhammad for the love of imam amir al muminin muhammad
[14:50]and for the hastening of the reappearance imam sahib al asri wazaman
[14:59]muhammad my respected scholars elders brothers and sisters in imam salaam alaikum
[15:10]jameen wahmatullahi wa barakatu question what's the power of your belief keep
[15:19]this question in the back of your mind inshaallah we'll return to
[15:22]it when i want to succeed in any endeavor in life if
[15:26]anything that i set forth in my life i must make sure
[15:30]that i have one thing in place before i go and proceed
[15:33]that goal if i want to start a business if i want
[15:36]to start an institution if i want to start in my school
[15:39]and academics i must make sure that i have something in place
[15:43]in order to succeed if i go for the business or the
[15:46]establishment of the institution the first thing that someone will ask me
[15:50]in order to succeed in that endeavor is do you have a
[15:54]plan if i want to go get the investment for the business
[15:58]loan i need a plan if i want to succeed in establishing
[16:02]an hussainia a masjid an institution i need a plan if i
[16:07]want to succeed in my academics i want to become a doctor
[16:10]an engineer i must have a plan for example in medicine i
[16:14]must plan for four years undergrad four years graduate school and then
[16:18]four years and then at least three years of residency this is
[16:21]all the plan that i must do in order to succeed the
[16:24]same way when you and i look at our institutions and the
[16:29]future of our community we must have a plan in order to
[16:33]succeed the question that i want to lay in front of us
[16:37]in the next few nights is what is the future trajectory of
[16:41]our community where are we going not one or two or three
[16:46]years down the road but five ten fifteen twenty no one hundred
[16:52]years down the road where will we be because we are part
[16:57]and parcel of this society here therefore i want to look at
[17:01]in the brief moments that we have together here tonight and also
[17:04]in the subsequent nights i want us to have a strong foundation
[17:08]where we begin to practice and understand what our future will be
[17:12]and how we can plan for that future and its success now
[17:17]because if i want to succeed in anything i must plan and
[17:20]implement from now i cannot just let the wind take me wherever
[17:25]i want and i cannot just let the wind take my next
[17:29]generations wherever it wishes i must plan for success therefore in the
[17:35]brief moments that we have together tonight i want to look at
[17:38]what is it why is it that we are here what's the
[17:41]purpose what's the point i want to look at what is the
[17:45]philosophy of migration within islam is there a concept of migration within
[17:49]islam and if so what is it i want to look at
[17:52]a brief history of the shia community of tashayyaw globally what happened
[17:57]in the history of shia islam and then i want to answer
[18:01]the question that i started with what is the power of your
[18:05]belief system so that we can understand what it is that the
[18:11]mission of abba abdullah is and what is our relationship to that
[18:15]mission because you and i are here to commemorate the arba'ayeen the
[18:19]fortieth of sayyid al shuhada and this is where you and i
[18:23]pledge our allegiance and remind ourselves and our loved ones and our
[18:29]friends and our families and everyone that we are here and we
[18:33]pledge our allegiance to sayyid ashwada after forty days no after forty
[18:37]years no after every lifetime we will pledge our allegiance to sayyid
[18:41]ashwada and we must make sure that we pass this on this
[18:45]is our agenda for the evening inshaallah wa'alee muhammad our sixth imam
[18:54]had a companion by the name of abu basir he comes to
[18:58]the sixth imam imam sadiq he says can you please tell me
[19:03]what are the major sins the canonical sins the major ones that
[19:08]if someone does this they need to be very careful that in
[19:11]the court of allah they have done a grave crime he says
[19:16]abu basir note them down they are the following someone may think
[19:20]the major sins they must be a very long list imam said
[19:23]note them down he said number one major sin in the court
[19:27]of allah abu basir he says one is to commit shirk to
[19:32]associate anyone with allah is a major sin in the court of
[19:36]allah he says what else he says two to kill an innocent
[19:44]person any innocent person you kill this individual in the court of
[19:48]allah you have committed a major sin he says youabna rasoolah what
[19:53]else he says to accuse an innocent woman of indecency he says
[19:58]youabna rasoolah what else to run away from the battlefield of jihad
[20:02]of the struggle of the battlefield the minor struggle to run away
[20:06]from that battlefield in the court of allah major sin he says
[20:09]what else he says number five to deal with he he says
[20:18]what else he says number six to disrespect one's parents your parents
[20:25]if you disrespect them major sin in the court of allah so
[20:29]what else he says to steal the property of an orphan aytam
[20:35]somebody who has lost their father their mother they're a minor they're
[20:39]a child you steal their property major court sin in the court
[20:42]of allah he says what else he says says at the beginning
[20:54]the imam had told him is seven he says you said there
[20:57]were seven i counted eight what's the hikma because the imam doesn't
[21:02]make a mistake he said very well abu basir he says the
[21:06]reality is that shirk and ta'arubah dal hijrah are one and the
[21:10]same allahu akbar what is this concept i'm reading from the rasal
[21:15]of syed sistani please refer to your marja on this issue the
[21:17]reality of the matter is the scholars have given this idea that
[21:21]if based on the traditions of the ahlul bayt taaruba al hijra
[21:25]is this idea that i leave a land where i am able
[21:28]to practice my faith and i go to a land where i
[21:31]am no longer practice my faith in a way that i am
[21:35]no longer refraining from muharramat and i am not adhering to my
[21:39]wajabat so for example before i used to pray now i migrated
[21:43]i don't pray i used to fast i migrated i don't fast
[21:48]anymore this is something that i must be very careful in terms
[21:52]of protecting my iman but the scholars have given one situation in
[21:58]which you can make the migration even if your life is on
[22:01]the line even if you have a threat that you may lose
[22:04]your iman that is when your life is on the line if
[22:06]your life is on the line for example in situations such as
[22:09]iraq such as pakistan such as afghanistan these places many other countries
[22:16]the shias are systematically persecuted in these environments the ulama and the
[22:21]ahlul bayt have said you can go but you can only go
[22:26]to the extent that it saves your life please bear in mind
[22:30]because i want us to get to a very important conclusion this
[22:36]will build in the next two nights if your life is on
[22:40]the line you can make the migration but only to the extent
[22:44]that it saves your life what does that mean that means that
[22:48]even if i have to go to a remote village to save
[22:52]my life and i don't go to cities i must do that
[22:56]how did sa'dat and sayyid and or non sayyid shias end up
[23:00]in cities in for example iran such as qazween such as sistan
[23:05]such as these xyz places how it was the persecution that led
[23:12]them to flee from where they were we must be very mindful
[23:17]of how we got this aqeedah this belief system given to us
[23:22]it was not easy it came through great difficulties by the way
[23:25]the imam says something beautiful here you can migrate if your life
[23:30]is on the line but only to the extent that it saved
[23:32]your life what's an example of this an example are some of
[23:36]our scholars some of our great scholars of najaf when they need
[23:40]treatment for example when they need medical treatment heart surgery something of
[23:44]the likes they leave najaf and they go to the west for
[23:47]example they'll go to europe to get heart surgery when they go
[23:52]are they going and they say can i please see the big
[23:54]ben can i see the parliament building can i see shams ali
[23:57]zay can i see all these things the eiffel tower no they
[24:01]go for their treatment they come back quietly i'm not saying it's
[24:04]haram i'm not giving any statement of that sort the idea is
[24:07]that we must be very mindful of our environment another example is
[24:11]sayyid khomeini many of you will remember sayyid khomeini was in exile
[24:16]at some point in time when he was in exile he was
[24:19]removed from iran where did he go first first he went to
[24:25]turkey asantum he went to turkey when he went to turkey they
[24:29]said you cannot wear your your cannot be here you'll see pictures
[24:32]of him wearing for example a french coat or something like this
[24:36]he doesn't have his after time people began to be affected with
[24:40]his spirituality they say and they told him you must leave turkey
[24:43]after turkey where did he go kuwait okay kuwait where iraq yes
[24:52]after iraq where paris france in paris france was he saying where's
[24:58]the eiffel tower where's shams ali say i want to do some
[25:01]shopping go baba don't i'm not stopping you from doing shopping alhamdulillah
[25:05]do it but the idea was he was there for a particular
[25:09]purpose in islam environment has a big impact on who we are
[25:14]and who we become but i want to give you some hope
[25:16]here there's no problem in fact you will find in non muslim
[25:21]countries many times we get more islam than muslim countries is that
[25:26]not true go to some countries for example in some parts of
[25:30]asia in the middle east and otherwise try to become a citizen
[25:34]in that country can you try to have some rights in that
[25:37]country can you try to have a majlis of sayyid al shuhada
[25:40]in that country can you you cannot in this country in this
[25:44]part of the world we have freedom we can have a majlis
[25:47]we can have our freedom of expression it's beautiful it's one of
[25:50]the beautiful things and i want to give you some hope i'm
[25:53]not here to depress anyone i am here to give you hope
[25:56]we are told there's a tradition from a companion of our sixth
[25:59]imam whose name was hamad al sindhi or in other books hamad
[26:03]al samnadi this companion of the imam he was someone who was
[26:08]a merchant a businessman a traveler said the hakim mentions this said
[26:12]sistani mentions this he was somebody who was a merchant a businessman
[26:18]he would travel from medina he would go to non muslim lands
[26:22]when he would leave the muslim lands go to non muslim lands
[26:25]when he would come back the muslims would make fun of him
[26:29]they say hammad you go to non muslim land so much that
[26:34]one day you are gonna die in a non muslim land and
[26:37]if you die in a non muslim land allah will raise you
[26:40]with them on the day of judgment he said ibn rasulullah is
[26:43]this true it hurts my heart i want to know the truth
[26:46]what's the reality i don't care what they say but i it
[26:49]hurts me but if you tell me i'll be at peace i
[26:52]will know what the truth is i will know what haqn is
[26:54]if you tell me the imam asked him a question he said
[26:58]hammad when you leave here and you go to those other lands
[27:02]when you go to the lands do you tell people about us
[27:07]do you pray to god do you pray to allah do you
[27:10]tell people about us said yes i tell them i tell them
[27:15]when i'm there i tell them about you i tell them about
[27:18]the he says good he said hammad what about when you're here
[27:21]when you're in madinah do you tell people do you tell people
[27:24]about us do you tell people about the ahlul bayt he said
[27:27]yabna rasulullah no maybe everyone was already muslim maybe he felt there's
[27:31]no need what's the point at that point the imam looked at
[27:35]me he said hammad very well if this is the case then
[27:38]and you die on one of your business trips in those lands
[27:41]that are not muslim that on the day of judgment on yom
[27:45]al qayama allah will raise you as an ummah by yourself and
[27:50]there will be noor in front of you meaning that it doesn't
[27:55]matter where you are you and i as long as we have
[27:58]muhammad in our hearts and allah in our hearts that migration is
[28:03]good therefore and you know what's beautiful about this tradition that the
[28:07]imam has said i can be going in the wrong direction my
[28:12]ship can be sailing in the wrong direction but i can move
[28:16]my sail wherever i am and i can go in the right
[28:19]direction because migration is of two types migration is physical migration i
[28:27]go from city a to city b i go from dearborn to
[28:29]windsor i go from dearborn to toronto that's physical migration there's another
[28:34]form of migration that is spiritual migration mental migration ibrahim says i
[28:43]am traveling towards my lord i am migrating towards my lords question
[28:48]ibrahim where is your lord not that you are migrating towards him
[28:54]meaning your lord is everywhere your allah is not bound by time
[28:58]and space he is not bound by zama'n and makhan therefore where
[29:01]are you going ibrahim the scholars tell us this migration that ibrahim
[29:07]was making it was not a physical migration necessarily it was a
[29:10]spiritual migration you and i are in that boat of making a
[29:14]migration towards allah no matter where we are we live here i
[29:20]was born here many of us are born and raised in this
[29:22]part of the world our next generation will be born and raised
[29:24]here this is our home we are citizens of this country this
[29:29]is part and parcel of what we must become but in order
[29:32]to have a strong community not just a few years down the
[29:36]line but many years down the line we must focus on what
[29:40]it is that we believe therefore in the few moments that i
[29:43]have left i want to tell you how powerful is your belief
[29:48]system this belief system allahu akbar that within the hearts of the
[29:58]believers there is a flame for that never extinguishes how powerful is
[30:05]this flame how powerful is this belief i tell you from the
[30:08]bottom of my heart this flame this love of the ahlul bayt
[30:13]this love of their belief system of allah and the ahlul bayt
[30:16]is so powerful that it has shook the greatest tyrants in history
[30:23]if you read the history of tashayud do you know through which
[30:25]difficulties this came to you and i we got it on a
[30:28]silver platter many times we got this very easily do you know
[30:32]how difficult it was i won't take you back to the umayyads
[30:35]i won't even take you back to the abbasids i'll take you
[30:38]back more recently because sometimes we think that's a very long time
[30:41]ago please bear with me very important what is this hegemony of
[30:46]the world today the leading power of the world today is the
[30:51]united states before the united states it was great britain before great
[30:56]britain it was ottoman empire alhamdulillah what is it about to be
[31:06]somebody may say china for example we'll see insha'atul in the past
[31:10]it was the ottoman empire do we know the history of the
[31:13]ottoman empire do you know what happened do you know through which
[31:16]difficulties this faith reached us sultan in one day not in months
[31:23]not in weeks in one day he said i want you to
[31:26]gather 70,000 shias who were in the ottoman empire known shias in
[31:31]one day he gathered 70,000 and he ordered for 40,000 of them
[31:37]to be beheaded killed sultan murad under the ottoman empire after salim
[31:44]he asked his main ruler or the main cleric the main religious
[31:49]authority he said i want you to give a fatwa that allows
[31:53]us to spill the blood of the shia thousands tens of thousands
[31:58]of shia were killed do you know in the history of baghdad
[32:02]if you read the history there was a time in the history
[32:05]that they would not build a wall until they drained the blood
[32:09]of a sayyid the hasani in the cement you and i when
[32:14]we build a building we put water in the cement and mix
[32:16]it yeah they were using the blood of sa'adat from the lineage
[32:20]people fled in the middle of the night in order to save
[32:25]their lives it was very difficult if you go to lebanon the
[32:31]history of lebanon say that hakim comments on this say riyadh al
[32:34]hakim comments on this in lebanon you'll find shayr al banat which
[32:39]was a place where women would flee and jump off in order
[32:42]to save their decency because they had ibn taymiyyah had spilt the
[32:47]blood of thousands of shia afghanistan you know afghanistan used to have
[32:53]many shia systematically one hundred two hundred years ago abdul rahman khan
[33:01]one ruler 60% of the shia population he eliminated when we talk
[33:07]about why are they afraid why are rulers afraid of what your
[33:12]belief is i am here to tell you how powerful your belief
[33:15]is how powerful it is what you believe in your heart and
[33:19]mind can change the world allow me to explain what's the power
[33:29]of belief study conducted at harvard university by professor langer they looked
[33:38]at what is the power of what one believes in terms of
[33:41]impact on their bodies their physical bodies what you believe they looked
[33:46]at women who worked in hotels you know hotels they worked in
[33:50]the hotel when they worked in the hotel they would conduct many
[33:54]activities when they were making the rooms room service staff when they
[33:59]were working as room service staff they would make the beds they
[34:02]would push the carts they would do a lot of physical activity
[34:06]when they did this physical activity the researchers looked at them and
[34:10]the researchers said this activity this physical activity that these women are
[34:14]doing it actually classifies as exercise but when they looked at the
[34:20]metrics of their body for example when they looked at their blood
[34:23]pressure their heart rate their bmi they looked at all the metrics
[34:26]of their body they realized that they were doing physical exercise but
[34:31]they were not getting the benefits of physical exercise therefore the researchers
[34:36]asked these women do you think this work that you do is
[34:39]it physical exercise is it physical exercise they said no we don't
[34:45]think it's physical exercise this is just our job they said very
[34:48]interesting therefore they conducted a study one group they told them nothing
[34:52]they said continue as is continue as you're going you allah bismillah
[34:57]no problem the second group they put up pictures and graphs in
[35:01]their break room they said look the work that you're doing making
[35:05]the bed pushing the cart going up and down the stairs all
[35:08]of this is physical work this is exercise you may not realize
[35:12]it but they showed them how it is that this is exercise
[35:18]they tracked them group a they kept the same group b they
[35:21]told them what you're doing is actually physical exercise they tracked them
[35:28]for weeks four weeks five weeks at the end of the research
[35:32]study you will be astonished as to what happened the group that
[35:36]was told continue as is when they tested their blood pressure their
[35:41]heart rate all of the factors of their bmi their all the
[35:45]metrics of their body well-being they found the same but when they
[35:49]tested the second group that they said carry on doing what you're
[35:52]doing but you don't realize that what you're doing is actually physical
[35:55]exercise do you know what happened when they took studies of their
[36:00]blood pressure of their bmi of their heart rate everything went down
[36:14]the second group when they took their metrics everything went down they
[36:27]got healthier what changed the researchers were shocked the researchers were baffled
[36:31]the researchers were astonished why they said the only thing that changed
[36:37]in the study is what the women believed their physical exercise their
[36:44]physical movement and activity everything was the same the only thing that
[36:48]changed was one group they didn't think what they were doing was
[36:51]exercise the other group what they were doing they thought it was
[36:55]exercise the power of what you believe never forget what i'm about
[36:59]to tell you the pygmalion effect it is named after a play
[37:04]by george bernard shaw george bernard shaw the famous british playwright who
[37:09]was one of the founders of the london school of economics and
[37:12]he's also the one who has commented on rasulullah in a positive
[37:15]light he's also the one who has studied about the ahlul bayt
[37:19]i will leave all of that aside for the time being there
[37:22]was a researcher by the name of rosenthal professor rosenthal he wanted
[37:26]to see what is the impact not only of what i believe
[37:31]but what is the impact if someone else believes something about me
[37:34]does that impact me you will be astonished about what he found
[37:38]in his lab he put two boxes in two boxes he put
[37:43]one group he put rats researchers study rats because similar they are
[37:48]very similar to human beings in terms of their genetic effects please
[37:52]bear very close attention i'm drawing to a conclusion here on one
[37:57]box he wrote he put a group of rats and in another
[38:00]box he put another group of rats on the first box he
[38:04]wrote smart rats smart rats on the other box he wrote dull
[38:12]rats not smart dull and he put these two groups in his
[38:18]lab he then told his students to come into the lab and
[38:22]do the research what the students had to do they had to
[38:25]take the rats that were in their box and they had to
[38:29]make them go through a maze you know what i mean when
[38:31]i say a maze they have to go through a maze and
[38:33]see which goes through faster the students who got the smart rats
[38:38]they took out the rats and they made the rats go through
[38:41]the maze the students who got the dull rats they took those
[38:47]rats and they put them through the maze the power of belief
[38:51]not only your own belief other people's belief what do you think
[38:54]the researchers found the researchers found that in every case those rats
[39:01]that were labeled smart they finished the maze much faster than the
[39:05]others and those rats that have written dull on the box they
[39:10]did slower than the fat the smart rats in every case what's
[39:15]the catch do you know what the catch was all of the
[39:18]rats were the same there was no difference so the researchers were
[39:23]shocked they said what happened they said the way that the students
[39:28]were treating the rats impacted how they did allahu akbar when you
[39:33]see that young youth in shabaab in the community never put them
[39:36]down how you treat them impacts how they become so when professor
[39:42]rosenthal studied the rats said now we must apply this to human
[39:47]beings and they applied it to human beings very famous rosenthal pygmalion
[39:52]effect study they went to a school in the bay area when
[39:56]they went to the school they told the teachers that you have
[39:59]some they gave an exam at the beginning of the year and
[40:02]they said at the end of the exam they said some of
[40:05]your students are gifted students these are some of the best students
[40:09]in your class they told the teacher the name that student didn't
[40:13]even know they said these are gifted these are very special kids
[40:17]in your class look after and take after this is what the
[40:19]results show this is what the test shows after one year passed
[40:25]those students who were identified as gifted according to the test at
[40:31]least that's what they told the teachers on every metric those students
[40:35]they did better than the other students in the class but what
[40:39]was the catch all of the students were the same those students
[40:44]who they said they are gifted they were not gifted they just
[40:47]told them this meaning what not only what i believe has an
[40:52]impact on what i become what others believe about me can have
[40:56]an impact on me whether i realize or not therefore look at
[41:00]each individual look at each person that you encounter in your life
[41:04]say and one of the great teachers in the hauza says look
[41:08]at each people each person that you meet as a project of
[41:11]allah that this is a project of allah i never put down
[41:18]anyone aspire to the best what you believe can change the world
[41:23]this is why some may say that when amir al mumineen when
[41:27]he lifted the gate of khaybar he has divine strength from allah
[41:30]but he is giving a lesson for you and i they said
[41:34]to amir al mumineen how is it they amir al mumineen that
[41:37]you lifted the gate of khaybar but you are having trouble breaking
[41:41]a piece of barley bread allahu akbar amir al mumineen says i
[41:45]did not lift the gate of khaybar by my physical strength i
[41:49]lifted the gate of khaybar by my ruhani strength the strength of
[41:54]my spirit this is how powerful and this belief system is what
[42:00]has been scaring tyrants from banu umayyah to banu abbas to the
[42:05]ottoman empire to the afghans all the way throughout history cultivate that
[42:10]belief system and pledge allegiance to the imam because this belief system
[42:15]is what we must keep in our hearts and what we must
[42:18]pass down to our next generations i want to take the opportunity

[44:06]outside and to be able to engage in a raffle that could
[44:14]offer some of us my dear brothers and sisters the chance to
[44:18]visit the imam free of cost in february inshaallah and so the
