[0:00]Muhammad Hussein did two things in karbala that were seemingly contradictory on
[0:24]the one hand the Imam kept telling his companions that they're absolved
[0:33]of their pledges of allegiance to him he said this to them
[0:43]collectively when he addressed them on the eve of Ashura he said
[0:51]use the darkness of the night to your advantage leave me alone
[0:58]these people are trying to get me and once they get a
[1:04]hold of me at the very least you'll be able to save
[1:06]your own lives they won't care about you and he said this
[1:14]to his companions on an individual basis as well multiple times he
[1:20]said it to the companion who had two children who had been
[1:25]captured by IBN Ziad so he made this point quite clear that
[1:30]you are absolved of your pledges of loyalty to me leave me
[1:40]alone on the other hand the Imam declared multiple times on the
[1:46]day of Ashura Allah is there no one to help us is
[2:03]there no one to support me is there no one to protect
[2:05]the sanctity of the women and the children of rasulullah how do
[2:10]you reconcile between these two things the Imam pushing his companions away
[2:17]prior to Ashura and then soliciting help and support on the day
[2:24]of Ashura the answer after some reflection is quite simple when the
[2:31]Imam was pushing his companions away telling them they should leave him
[2:39]they should abandon him the Imam was trying to filter out anyone
[2:44]whose intentions weren't pure who has doubts about his mission he's trying
[2:51]to weed out the ones that aren't quite up there with the
[2:59]rest of his companions with absolute loyalty so that if anybody remained
[3:04]in the camp of Imam al-hussein who wasn't certain about defending the
[3:12]Imam to the very last breath they would leave so we wouldn't
[3:19]have any deserters we wouldn't have anyone with their feet shaking on
[3:25]the day of Ashura he was trying to filter his companions to
[3:31]ensure that only the best of the best remained which is why
[3:37]when his sister zainab on the eve of Ashura addressed Imam and
[3:44]Hussain telling him are you sure about your companions will they stand
[3:49]with you tomorrow the Imam said I have tested them I have
[3:54]filtered them I've weeded out all the ones that could potentially abandon
[4:02]us and that's why the Imam famously declared foreign I don't know
[4:18]of any companions better than my own companions he's tested them he
[4:24]tried them so he's trying to weed out all the ones that
[4:29]are impure or the ones that are doubtful or the ones that
[4:33]don't have the resolve or the courage to face the day of
[4:37]Ashura in its magnitude whereas on the day of Ashura when the
[4:42]Imam was calling out for help and support the Imam is a
[4:49]reflection of the mercy of Allah are the names of Allah they
[4:56]are the attributes of Allah and so in his capacity as the
[5:03]reflection and expression of Divine Mercy Imam al-hussein is trying to see
[5:09]if there is any Soul still worth saving even among the camp
[5:16]of IBN Ziad he's trying to see if there is anybody still
[5:22]left with a modicum of faith and Humanity within him maybe just
[5:31]maybe there is someone else who needs that push in order to
[5:35]switch sides and join the camp of Imam Al Hussain so in
[5:39]both of those cases Imam al-hussein is trying to filter he's trying
[5:44]to examine and separate the good from the bad now why I
[5:51]said this is because for the last 10 nights we have been
[5:57]subjected to this filtration we have been exposed to Imam Hussain and
[6:04]his attempt to save our souls the Imam doesn't want anything from
[6:12]you and I the Imam doesn't benefit from us attending these gatherings
[6:15]he doesn't get anything out of us crying lamenting beating our chests
[6:22]and heads all of these things are so that we could answer
[6:27]his call and join his Ark of Salvation that's what an Ark
[6:34]of Salvation does there are those boats I don't know if you
[6:38]know about them or if you're you've heard of him of them
[6:39]but if you look them up on YouTube you'll find some clips
[6:46]of these organizations whose job is to go and find those refugees
[6:50]trying to cross the English Channel from France over to the UK
[6:56]that is a common route usually taken by refugees who want to
[7:01]reach the United Kingdom the English Channel is one of the most
[7:06]tumultuous Waters in the world it's one of the most dangerous treks
[7:10]and a lot of people end up drowning but then there are
[7:17]these organizations whose job is to defy the government and its laws
[7:21]and to go and find any Refugee who's in distress if they
[7:26]see a refugee boat that's about to capsize they hurry to them
[7:29]and they don't care who's on this boat they don't care about
[7:33]their nationality they don't care about their faith they don't care about
[7:37]their ethnicity all they care about is seeing these people who are
[7:41]in distress who need help and so they look they throw them
[7:44]a life raft they give them a Lifeline my dear brothers and
[7:52]sisters Imam al-hussein is our lifeline Imam al-hussein the reason we go
[7:59]through these Seasons this blessed incredible season of Salvation renewal Revival Rejuvenation
[8:06]the season of Muharram and Ashura God knows how many people have
[8:14]found their way back to Allah through Imam al-hussein by attending these
[8:20]majalis just here in this very imageless of ours I got to
[8:24]meet several people one of them is now a very dear friend
[8:29]of mine he's a Sabian mandaean he took me to the side
[8:32]he said look these stories that you've been telling from the pulpit
[8:41]I connect with them on the deepest level he said the story
[8:45]of qasim the story of and then he burst out in tears
[8:50]he started crying he's a savian I don't know if you know
[8:54]about this group but it's a religion that follows John the Baptist
[8:59]whenever I used to go to the shrine of Zakaria and What's
[9:05]called the umayyad mosque in Damascus I would greet him as such
[9:10]as the story is famous zakariah learned that the final messenger of
[9:20]Allah will have a son named Hussein who will be slaughtered he
[9:26]will be killed and so he said to Allah the Hadith says
[9:28]he took he went to his house for three days didn't come
[9:33]out for three days from sobbing and crying he couldn't speak to
[9:37]anyone then he said Ya Allah give me a boy give me
[9:42]a son who would be slaughtered just like Hussain so that I
[9:45]could share the grief of rasulullah and so Allah gave him zakariah
[9:53]whom the Quran speaks about in Splendid terms this young beautiful soul
[10:02]who would spend his days in prayer and crying from the fear
[10:07]of Allah and eventually he was murdered he was slaughtered by this
[10:14]Tyrant by this king who wanted to marry his own sister and
[10:19]ultimately was faced with Yahya telling him this is wrong forbidding the
[10:25]evil and eventually ended up killing him so this was the prayer
[10:33]of Zechariah this group of people the sabians the mandaeans who speak
[10:37]Aramaic which is the language of Isa alaihissalam a language that's very
[10:43]close to Arabic he came to the Muslims and he cried over
[10:48]the tragedy he lamented over the calamities a sister who has just
[10:55]become Muslim she was a Christian she also joined us here a
[10:58]brother who was an alawite is a volunteer in this Gathering there
[11:05]is something about Imam al-hussein that brings people in the most amazing
[11:10]manner people of different faiths different religions different backgrounds a few years
[11:15]ago I met this priest it was a Baptist priest from Seattle
[11:24]in the northwest of the United States I believe if I'm not
[11:30]mistaken or from Oregon rather the state of Oregon and very long
[11:34]story short we sat there on a panel and I didn't know
[11:39]why he was there because the topic of the panel was promoting
[11:42]Imam al-hussein in non-muslim countries in the Western World so I thought
[11:48]why is he sitting there when we're talking about how to promote
[11:52]Imam al-hussein so I grabbed the mic I was the first person
[11:55]to speak I said you know there's something about Imam al-hussein and
[11:58]Christians something about him that attracts the followers of Jesus Christ to
[12:07]him if you look at the Journey of Imam al-hussein his family
[12:11]the Christian monk who took the sacred head of saying with him
[12:15]all night long painted that picture and then the ambassador of yazid
[12:22]the ambassador to the Roman Empire to the court of yazid all
[12:25]these stories when you put them together and then when you look
[12:27]at the fact that so many Christians have discovered Islam through the
[12:33]Gateway of Hussain there is something about Imam al-hussein that's attracting all
[12:39]of these people and my theory is that when they see Imam
[12:45]Al Hussain they see the attributes of Jesus Christ personified in Hussain
[12:51]there's also another story about a group of Christian mercenaries who were
[12:57]sent to kill Imam al-hussein on the day of Ashura I don't
[13:00]want to get into that now but I said that they see
[13:04]Jesus and Hussein so this Christian priest who was sitting next to
[13:10]me he said could I have the mic please I thought he
[13:13]was going to take the mic and object and say look with
[13:17]all due respect Jesus is our we consider him to be divine
[13:20]we consider him to be a member of the Triune God and
[13:25]so any comparison with others that's what I thought he took the
[13:29]mic he said what this man just said is exactly what happened
[13:32]to me I didn't know Jesus his name is John shuck you
[13:38]can look him up he said I did not know Jesus until
[13:41]I went to karbala I discovered Jesus on the plains of karbala
[13:44]when I went to Arabian he even made a documentary about Imam
[13:51]al-hussein about the pilgrimage of arborin he said that's where I discovered
[13:56]Jesus and then he said you the followers of Imam Al Hussain
[13:59]you're a small minority you're persecuted you're oppressed but you have something
[14:05]no one else has you have a Priceless gem called Hussein that
[14:09]gives you invincible power you don't understand that you don't appreciate the
[14:15]power that Hussein brings you is here to save us how much
[14:24]we have appreciated that how much Advantage we've taken from that over
[14:32]the last 10 nights I don't know but whatever you've gained from
[14:40]Imam Al Hussain my suggestion to all of you my dear brothers
[14:46]and sisters is that whatever you've you've taken from him build on
[14:52]that in other words it's important to attend these gatherings it's imperative
[14:58]to Lament The Tragedy of Imam al-hussein but let that not be
[15:03]the last stop let that be the launching pad for greater objectives
[15:12]meaning that try and establish a connection with Imam Al Hussain that
[15:19]lasts throughout the year not just in the ten nights and do
[15:25]whatever you can have you seen these little girls those of you
[15:30]who have been know what I'm talking about and those are those
[15:33]of you who have not you don't know what you're missing out
[15:38]on you better make sure you go to ziara because it's something
[15:42]else right don't delay don't procrastinate do it as soon as you
[15:48]can and then you will be addicted to it trust me take
[15:50]my word for it so you'll see these little girls they have
[15:54]nothing to offer they come from these Villages they're poor their parents
[15:58]have already pulled their money to serve food to the zoo but
[16:03]they also want to contribute so what do they do they give
[16:06]out napkins they hold the Kleenex or they might give cups of
[16:14]water or they'd give toothpicks or whatever they can get a hold
[16:20]of Brothers and Sisters Let's contribute to the legacy of Imam al-hussein
[16:25]let's anchor our boat to his ship throughout the year find a
[16:28]way to do it I won't choose what you have to do
[16:33]I won't tell you you have to find a way to do
[16:38]this inshallah now martyrdom is a source of pride for the bait
[16:45]death is something they're used to it's not foreign to them it's
[16:51]not alien to them rasulullah famously declared that small every single one
[17:03]of us either gets killed in battle or gets poisoned and this
[17:09]includes rasulullah himself was martyred it was poisoned to death and so
[17:15]this is a household that's familiar with death and martyrdom Imam al-hussein
[17:23]himself declared Mal hayat barama death to me is a source of
[17:34]happiness if it happens With Honor if it happens in the service
[17:38]of Allah famously declared Allah for death more than a child an
[17:58]infant who yearns for his mother's breasts says I came to Imam
[18:09]Hussain he says you've been crying for 30 years isn't it time
[18:22]your grief subsides your pain goes away or decreases just a little
[18:31]bit is it a time you do that is it death habitual
[18:42]to you and martyrdom a source of Honor from Allah subhanahu wa
[18:46]ta'ala for you the Imam said to him [Music] I know what
[19:03]you're trying to do thank you may Allah bless you oh yeah
[19:41]has your eye ever seen or your ears ever heard foreign foreign
[20:32][Music] oh yeah I remember them running around in the deserts running
[21:03]from one tenth to another one burn down the tens of the
[21:20]oppressors that's what they were calling whenever I see them I remember
[21:28]that day in other words what happened to Abba abedin law was
[21:35]painful beyond measure but what happened after he was killed after the
[21:42]unthinkable what happened was even more painful the first thing is he
[21:58]called out I want ten Horsemen to volunteer they said to him
[22:07]what do you want to do he said I have orders from
[22:10]the commander that we trample upon their bodies so that we would
[22:21]leave no trace of them nothing would remain to be buried Ten
[22:27]Men came forward historians saying reporters on the battlefield said we looked
[22:38]at them every single one of them was a bastard child born
[22:44]out of wedlock they came forward with their horses said make sure
[22:54]their shoes are fresh and sharp make sure they're freshly fed he
[23:01]ordered the horses to trample upon the bodies and the companions of
[23:15]Jose when they were dying he then said turn the bodies over
[23:28]on their backs run over them one more time she said to
[23:57]him I can hear glass jars breaking what is happening Imam is
[24:04]a judge said by God those aren't glass jars those are the
[24:11]rib bones of my father foreign foreign [Music] [Applause] burned down their
[25:36]returns imagine what happens to these young girls seeing their tents on
[25:43]fire Allah [Music] one of them Muslim says I saw her dress
[25:55]had caught fire so I ran after her to try and put
[25:57]it out initially she thought I was there to ransack what she
[26:05]had to steal her possessions to take her hijab off so she
[26:09]ran and I ran behind her eventually I put out the fire
[26:17]she looked at me she said to him oh man have you
[26:24]ever read the Quran he said yes I have she said to
[26:26]me have you read the verse do our tree to the orphan
[26:37]with harshness he said yes I have she said to him I
[26:42]am the orphan of Hussain don't hurt me she says that as
[26:53]I was standing watching in shock as they attacked the women and
[26:58]the children one man caught me with his eye so he began
[27:05]running towards me as I ran away from him he used the
[27:13]back of his spear to poke me so I fell onto my
[27:19]face when I woke up I looked at him he came towards
[27:22]me he had seen my two earrings so he grabbed the earrings
[27:30]and pulled them off cutting my ears with them leaving the blood
[27:34]coming down my face and cheeks it was then that two things
[27:45]happened first the horse describes the scene for us he says yeah
[28:04][Music] [Music] imagine the women and the children they didn't know what
[28:45]had happened Allah they're waiting they're hoping suddenly the horse comes back
[28:52]and the saddle is tilted sideways head is lower to the ground
[29:02]they realize what had happened they surrounded the horse one of them
[29:07]went up to the horse saying tell me the name quenches thirst
[29:21]before they killed it foreign [Applause] they were done with the women
[29:33]and the children they then turned their attention to the body himself
[29:42][Music] had 1600 wounds on his body imagine what happens to a
[30:02]shirt which has withstood sixteen hundred stab wounds not a shirt a
[30:10]shirt doesn't remain anymore and yet they attacked his body they were
[30:15]trying to send a message to the women and the children that
[30:22]we will violate every sanctity you have they stole the shirt leaving
[30:29]him like so under the sun foreign [Applause] was wearing a ring
[30:43]instead of trying to pull out the ring he pulled out his
[30:51]dagger hello Muslim says the two boys went missing they were the
[31:26]two sons their father had been killed in battle they went looking
[31:39]for these two boys eventually ladies and have found them but how
[31:46]did she find them she went outside of the camp only to
[31:55]see these two boys had dug a small hole because the surface
[31:59]of the sand the surface of the desert is very hot so
[32:03]they had dug a little hole where it's damp but not a
[32:09]little cooler they had lifted their shirts they had put their bellies
[32:13]on the ground to feel just a little bit of coldness but
[32:20]they had both died from The Thirst says he says that 17
[32:32]children of Allah and his nephews and his nieces including Hamida bintu
[32:39]Muslim the orphan girl they perished under the Hooves of the horses
[32:44]on the day of Ashura some of them died of thirst I
[32:56]told him do you want to kill these people or do you
[33:03]have something else you want to do with them he said no
[33:09]I have orders to humiliate them I want to parade them throughout
[33:14]the lands I want to take them to obey the happiness who
[33:18]has promised a big prize for anyone who does so so I
[33:25]don't want them dead no muslim says so I told him you
[33:30]have to quench their thirst or they'll all die he said fine
[33:34]you can take them some water so he says I filled a
[33:40]bowl with water I went to the children of Allah the first
[33:44]one looked at the water and said how could I drink from
[33:51]it she refused then I took it to the next one she
[33:53]refused again the third one the fourth one until I reached Hussein's
[33:58]three-year-old orphan girl he says when I offered her the water to
[34:05]everyone's shock she took it but instead of drinking she ran towards
[34:11]the battlefield staying up at all father I heard you say I
[34:21]brought you some water [Laughter] ha one that does settled and the
[34:50]sunset ladies the impossible task of putting everyone to sleep she knows
[34:59]the journey ahead will be a long one they need all the
[35:02]rest they can get so they never went to every surviving member
[35:12]of the calm trying to console the one of them would say
[35:18]Ladies by your father foreign the other would say where is my
[35:29]brother he went and never came back another one would say where
[35:34]is my baby where is my son zainab tried to comfort every
[35:41]one of them help them to get as much sleep as they
[35:44]could but there was one who was missing one of them was
[35:52]still in shock have you ever seen a father or a mother
[35:54]lose a child I have seen them May no father or mother
[36:03]ever see the death of their children they're so in shock that
[36:09]they can't believe their child is dead you tell them she says
[36:14]no my son is alive he was with me he's okay go
[36:19]to him Shake him move him you'll see he's alive one of
[36:24]these ladies was still in shock ladies Aina couldn't find her so
[36:35]she went outside looking for her she finally had had some water
[36:40]and therefore there was a little bit of milk in her breath
[36:51]s at all Into the Night it's only to hear a faint
[37:05]lullaby [Music] even without back that's now bad she went looking behind
[37:19]the turn um it's a mother it is robust of a lioness
[37:35]seeking her cup it's a mother it is a lioness seeking her
[37:58]come zainab I've been here and far but cannot find my husband
[38:07]foreign what did we do to see this day what did we
[38:22]ever do to you [Music] what did we do to see this
[38:31]day my boy is gone he won't return with it my heart
[38:40]dwell forever will always burn I shake his crib but he is
[38:50]gone Abdallah [Music] foreign [Music] you identify someone you identify them either
[39:37]through their face you identify them by how they look or you
[39:49]look at their body but zainab had none of those the only
[39:53]way she could find above the law was to find a pit
[39:58]that was filled with broken source she came to him she tried
[40:07]to remove those swords those blades those arrows those rocks she then
[40:15]addressed his body saying I want to tell you what they did
[40:27]to us after you were narrates this Hadith he says that sukhaina
[40:37]came to her aunt zainab she looked at that pit all she
[40:42]could see was blades and rocks she then looked at her aunt
[40:50]saying who are you talking to I can't see my father it
[40:54]was then that she heard a voice from inside that pit this
[41:01]is the voice what did he say this is a message to
[41:06]all of you whenever you drink water remember my first inventable [Applause]
[41:28][Music] if you ever hear a tragedy Remember My Tragedy as Imam
[41:45]said whenever you go through trouble in your life or problems you
[41:54]wish to cry cry foreign [Applause] [Music] all these tragedies are on
[42:37]the one hand now reminds us of one tragedy which was most
[42:42]painful for him which is it he says foreign [Applause] [Music] [Applause]
[43:09][Applause] foreign [Music] [Music] every time you screamed every time you sobbed
[43:59]every time you cried is applying to you may Allah bless you
[44:04]for that so all of these things that we did is it
[44:10]okay to then expect a reward from Allah is it okay to
[44:18]say yeah we came and we offered condolences to you over the
[44:23]killing of your son Abdullah we want something in exchange we want
[44:27]something in return from you we want a reward and that reward
[44:34]should be none other than the return of our master and our
[44:38]saves the one who will avenge the blood of above Allah inshallah
[44:55]the reward that we get will be the hastening of the return
[45:00]of the Imam
