[2:23]continuing our discussion about some of the verses of Surat and never
[2:29]we discussed the beginning part of neba and then last night we
[2:38]began the discussion about the second portion of it where Allah describes
[2:43]some of the blessings that he has bestowed upon the human beings
[2:48]and among those blessings are signs where when someone really reflects upon
[2:57]them he or she will conclude that there has to be a
[3:02]creator a maker to this universe and this Creator when we look
[3:09]at the signs of his creation it points us that he created
[3:15]this creation when he put all these rules and all this Perfection
[3:20]probably for a reason again another evidence about the existence of a
[3:28]Creator and his magnificence which then drives the human being once he
[3:34]or she realizes recognizes that this universe has a Creator he created
[3:43]this creation for a purpose then one strives to discover this purpose
[3:47]and implement it in his or her life and as Muslims our
[3:54]biggest purpose really is attaining the pleasure of Allah as per the
[4:01]person the Quran and Surah Allah says and attaining the pleasure of
[4:12]Allah is even greater than the blessings that the human will achieve
[4:16]in the in terms of Jannah and the paradise and the rivers
[4:20]and the Palaces and so on so forth It's really the pleasure
[4:26]of Allah and that's really our purpose in this world in our
[4:30]career attaining the pleasure of Allah so we started by the discussion
[4:37]from verses number six and seven yesterday where we talked about how
[4:41]Allah made this Earth inhabitable for the human being and Allah spoke
[4:50]of the mountains Now we move on to the next few verses
[4:55]where Allah talks a little bit about signs but in the human
[5:07]being Allah says we created you in pairs so again Allah says
[5:17]he is the creator so this is something interesting there is a
[5:25]lot of discussion as the Origin of Species where did they originate
[5:29]from how did they originate in the middle 1800s give or take
[5:39]Charles Darwin introduced the Origin of Species where he suggested a theory
[5:50]called the theory of evolution where the human being may have evolved
[5:58]from other species this theory is the theory taught today in school
[6:05]so if you go to University High School the only theory that
[6:11]is thought is the theory of evolution that's how it's taught it's
[6:16]thought as if it's Allah you know there's something interesting they say
[6:20]in philosophy you can never prove a theory you can only disprove
[6:24]a theory but the way evolution is being taught it is taught
[6:28]as if it is a law the idea obviously behind it is
[6:34]that the human being may have evolved gone through some phases of
[6:44]evolution until he or she has come to this state now very
[6:48]briefly obviously the people who talk about Evolution now evolution is an
[6:53]entire core start at the University so it's we would not be
[6:58]doing Justice to it in 20 30 minutes talking about it here
[7:00]but very briefly there is obviously those scientists who speak of it
[7:07]they they bring evidence one of the evidence that they present is
[7:11]that some experiment that was done by a couple of chemists where
[7:17]they put some inorganic chemicals those of you who know chemistry inorganic
[7:23]things that don't deal with carbon except carbon dioxide carbon monoxide those
[7:31]two are exceptions they're carbon-containing species but they are not organic chemistry
[7:39]okay everything else is organic chemistry that deals with carbon chemistry okay
[7:44]so these scientists they mix some ingredients without getting into all the
[7:47]nitty-gritty details and then they pass these species or these molecules through
[7:54]some very high voltage a chemical reaction resulted which then transformed these
[8:04]chemical species into an organic compound so adding hydrogen adding carbon dioxide
[8:11]which is in the atmosphere okay adding some nitrogen etc etc and
[8:21]then adding a very high voltage to it it was transformed into
[8:26]an organic species so they say this may be how life began
[8:29]on Earth these chemicals exist in nature and the high voltage could
[8:35]have come from lightning maybe you've had some really strong lightning that
[8:41]would have resulted in this kind of reaction and this is maybe
[8:45]how life began on Earth another evidence that some of these scientists
[8:51]use is viruses those of you who study viruses I think a
[8:56]lot of people have heard about viruses especially now after covet many
[9:01]people are familiar with them so viruses mutate they change they say
[9:06]here is another example of evolution viruses mutate they change so there
[9:12]you go that's another form of evolution that is happening although it's
[9:16]at the molecular level it's at the micro level but nonetheless it
[9:21]is happening along with other examples and evidences that they use so
[9:24]again I'm not here to discuss the whole theory of evolution and
[9:27]teach about the theory of evolution that's an entire course at the
[9:29]University but what I'm trying to say is that people who propagate
[9:35]this they present evidence it's not just something that they say well
[9:38]it just happened and this is how it is now one thing
[9:44]important to note not all scientists accept the theory of evolution and
[9:50]I'm not talking about just those who are religious you know even
[9:55]some scientists who study Evolution from a scientific perspective they find it
[10:02]difficult to accept the theory of evolution as proposed by Darwin for
[10:07]example one of them is a professor at Lehigh University by the
[10:13]name of Michael bihi b-e-h-e Michael bihi is a biochemist and he
[10:19]studies bacteria bacteria is a single-celled organism one cell we have lots
[10:26]of cells you know so bacterium as one cell the bacterium that
[10:34]he studies inside the cell of the bacterium there are a lot
[10:38]of what they call organelles machines machines that do different kind of
[10:43]work Michael bihe came to the conclusion where he said after studying
[10:47]the machines inside the bacteria he said though all these machines they
[10:52]enter depend on one another they really are tied up to another
[11:01]he says it's difficult to imagine that one organelle kind of evolved
[11:04]and then just stayed hanging in there for some time and tell
[11:08]another organelle and evolved and then until like that whole machine was
[11:11]put together he says it's difficult to accept this now again he's
[11:17]speaking as a scientist so he wrote a book called Darwin's Black
[11:22]Box and he proposed The Following he said that I am not
[11:29]accepting the theory of evolution however I ex proposed the intelligent design
[11:38]Theory these machines like the bacteria and the organelles and all that
[11:43]stuff inside it is made by some intelligent designer now interestingly he
[11:47]does not one call him God or Allah no no an intelligent
[11:51]designer a designer so there has to be a designer now he
[11:55]wants to call him an intelligent designer he want to call him
[12:00]whatever he wants that's up to him one of his kind of
[12:02]people who are influenced by his discussions is another professor called Jonathan
[12:08]Wells Jonathan Wells he wrote another book called the icons of evolution
[12:13]science or myth Jonathan Wells then discusses the theory of evolution again
[12:19]as a scientist he says if we are to take the theory
[12:26]of evolution it suggests the following there was a time in history
[12:32]let's call it Time Zero I'm calling it Time Zero Time Zero
[12:39]is when you did not have any living nothing living zero right
[12:42]but then something happened that sparked life lightning whatever it is some
[12:51]life started appearing all right so we called that time zero now
[12:55]this means at Time Zero you only had this one particular life
[13:02]form let's call it a after sometimes a evolves now you have
[13:09]a and b for example after some time another Revolution happens where
[13:19]now C is introduced so there is a chronological introduction to organisms
[13:27]meaning that if you go back in history and you study it
[13:33]in a chronological point like I said Time Zero you have species
[13:37]a after some millions of years or hundreds of thousands of years
[13:43]amb and so on so forth until you basically have the human
[13:49]being he says however when we study organisms we don't observe that
[13:55]we don't see that organisms appeared in a chronological manner there seems
[14:01]to be a time when they just coexisted so this suggests that
[14:07]Evolution may not be happening so that's one issue that he had
[14:11]this is now Jonathan Wells the second he says a second issue
[14:19]that he discusses about is the theory of probability if you have
[14:24]one coin now if you have a coin you have do you
[14:27]guys have coins in New Zealand yeah you do okay all right
[14:29]so coins if you have a coin and you flip it what
[14:33]are the chances of getting heads or tails 50 right okay what
[14:38]if you have two coins and you flip them what are the
[14:43]chances that both of those coins will be heads or both will
[14:45]be tells is it still 50 50.
[14:46]not anymore the percentage dropped by 50 to 25 percent so now
[14:54]25 what if you have four of them the percentage is going
[15:02]down what if you have a hundred of them what if you
[15:05]have a million of them what is the chances of a million
[15:11]coins all of them when they flipped they all land on heads
[15:14]or all land on tails from the theory of probability they say
[15:18]it is almost impossible it's almost impossible because the chances are so
[15:26]minute that they all land on heads or all land on tails
[15:31]so he says from the perspective of probability what is the likelihood
[15:38]that you had an evolution which is a random process what is
[15:46]the probability of this random process producing a human being with all
[15:53]the enzymes and all the hormones and all the chemistry that goes
[15:58]inside the human being what are the chances for example one simple
[16:05]thing well it's not really simple it's quite complicated but the whole
[16:12]thing of the pancreas and insulin foreign the pancreas has if you
[16:17]may use the term very Loosely here and I know there are
[16:19]Physicians you might they might get upset but it's a sensor and
[16:24]it senses how much sugar you have in your blood sugar cannot
[16:27]get inside the cell without the help of insulin okay the pancreas
[16:33]senses how much sugar do you have in your blood it releases
[16:36]enough insulin so that basically it can facilitate the entry of glucose
[16:41]into the cells all right how does the pancreas know how much
[16:47]insulin to release if there's any slight problem in this whole process
[16:55]then God forbid a person may develop diabetes so all this not
[17:03]only this the heart the human heart uses energy to pump 30
[17:11]percent of the energy comes from glucose 70 from fatty acids if
[17:19]a person is diabetic and the glucose cannot enter into the cells
[17:25]then what does the heart do it's not going to stop pumping
[17:32]it shifts now mostly towards fatty acids fatty acids cannot enter the
[17:38]heart on their own they're too big the heart has to release
[17:41]an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase this LPL has to facilitate the entry
[17:49]of fat into the heart the minute sugar content drops like when
[17:55]you're fasting so when you're fasting the rate of LPL goes very
[18:01]high because you're fasting you don't have much sugar in your system
[18:05]the heart has a sensor so the pancreas has a sensor for
[18:10]how much sugar you have the heart has a sensor how much
[18:13]sugar you have and all these sensors just work together collaborately to
[18:19]make sure that this whole system functions and operates all by coincidence
[18:26]that's when I told you dear if you remember a couple of
[18:31]nights ago when I had a meeting with this professor of philosophy
[18:37]who was not a believer I told him listen I'm gonna talk
[18:42]to you about like as a scientist not as a man of
[18:44]religion I told him I worked on diabetes and heart disease for
[18:48]several years I did research on this and we used to attend
[18:50]conferences and present our research so I told him imagine at one
[18:55]of these conferences we say the following someone gets up and says
[18:59]listen guys thousands of researchers and doctors and people who are trying
[19:04]to study this whole issue of the heart disease during the state
[19:08]of diabetes someone gets up and says listen guys you are wasting
[19:12]time and money you know billions of dollars are invested annually globally
[19:17]on this issue about heart failure in diabetic patients why does the
[19:25]heart fail in diabetic patients billions of dollars globally is being spent
[19:28]on this research they're trying to find out why why does it
[19:31]happen how does it happen so I told him imagine if at
[19:35]one of these conferences a person gets up and says you guys
[19:39]are wasting money time efforts all I know why the reason why
[19:47]80 of diabetic patients die from heart failure is because of a
[19:51]random process of evolution I told them honestly what do you think
[19:56]will be the reaction of the scientific Community to this individual he
[20:02]didn't say anything I told him at the very least if they
[20:06]want to be polite they would say sorry that does not make
[20:09]any sense are you trying to tell us that 80 percent of
[20:13]diabetic patients have a cardiomyopathy and their heart fails because of a
[20:18]random process of evolution and we're wasting our time and money and
[20:21]energy what nonsense is this I told him if scientists cannot accept
[20:28]that a heart can fail through a random process how do you
[20:31]want me as a scientist to accept that this whole universe with
[20:36]all its chemistry with all its laws of physics exists through our
[20:40]random process his response was well maybe we don't understand the source
[20:50]well wait a minute our discussion is not about understanding The Source
[20:56]rather it's about what the existence of a source and you just
[21:04]confessed there is a source now you want to call him a
[21:10]source intelligent designer whatever you want to call him you call him
[21:13]we call him Allah so it's a very interesting concept and that's
[21:18]why Jonathan Wells uses that theory of probability the theory of probability
[21:25]and he says that it just does not make sense as well
[21:29]when you use probability what is the chances that all these evolutionary
[21:33]steps happened randomly to produce this human being for example why did
[21:40]the heart end up being up here and the kidney is just
[21:47]randomly wherever they're supposed to be and the Brain ended up where
[21:51]it's supposed to be you know what how could all this random
[21:54]randomly just happen so that's the second issue that Jonathan Wells have
[22:01]the first one as I mentioned was the chronology chronological appearance of
[22:07]organisms throughout history which he says it does not happen second is
[22:11]probability the third he references Michael bihi which a theory that Michael
[22:20]B produced called irreducible complexity meaning like I said Michael B talks
[22:26]about a bacteria you know he studies bacteria and he says the
[22:30]bacteria when I look at the cell of a bacterium whatever organelles
[22:32]that are found in the bacteria you know you cannot reduce this
[22:40]any further I mean the bacterium has all the machinery to help
[22:43]it operate and function otherwise it would not work and just to
[22:49]give an analogy and this analogy is from me you know this
[22:52]is my analogy if you want to go and buy a car
[22:58]okay shred all the bells and the whistles on the car you
[23:00]know all the AC and the automatic windows and all if you
[23:04]go to someone and tell him build me a very simple car
[23:07]something that's a car I don't care I don't even want anything
[23:12]doors they're unnecessary you don't need doors in a car for example
[23:16]in fact there are some cars that don't have doors so doors
[23:20]I don't want windows I don't care about build me a car
[23:23]what would be the simplest form you'll have to have an engine
[23:28]and you will need Wheels otherwise the car is not going to
[23:34]move so some engines some wheels and maybe some controls you need
[23:37]maybe a steering wheel somewhere to control this car without those you
[23:42]can't have a car like you know the guy will tell you
[23:43]okay here is an engine there you go this is your car
[23:47]he says no that's not a car that's an engine I want
[23:48]a car so the the simplest car has to have some simplest
[23:55]you know Machinery components to make it a car you cannot reduce
[24:01]it any further than this like we said for example the engine
[24:04]the wheels the fuel etc etc so he says basically a bacterium
[24:13]cell is the least of the components that you have to operate
[24:17]a functional cell and separately these are useless it's like someone giving
[24:21]you an engine says public so it's useless what do I don't
[24:25]care about the engine without the whole machines and their tools or
[24:29]someone gives you the wheels there we go take the tires and
[24:31]that's it useless I don't care about the tires by themselves so
[24:36]he says this theory of irreducible complexity is but suggests that you
[24:43]need the whole components together to operate and function well and therefore
[24:49]he says that Evolution would not make any sense on these fronts
[24:52]now remember these are scientists they're talking from a scientific perspective they're
[24:57]not talking from a religious perspective so then comes the question then
[25:04]how do we explain like what viruses so we know that viruses
[25:10]mutate our response our response is that Allah when he creates every
[25:18]being he creates some survival mechanism and us the human being as
[25:22]the immune system for example that's some defense mechanism that's a defense
[25:28]mechanism and the virus maybe Allah made these mutations as forms for
[25:33]this virus to survive that could be one possibility why do we
[25:37]have that it does not necessarily mean just because the virus is
[25:43]mutated that there is a Evolution and the human being came from
[25:45]a random process and so on and so forth and from other
[25:50]species okay so that's one second thing people then argue they say
[25:53]okay what about the DNA something interesting about the DNA those of
[25:58]you who study DNA or know about DNA it has only four
[26:01]letters or they come the codons the A and the T and
[26:06]the C and the g these four the order you put them
[26:12]in subhanallah makes a tree a tree a strawberry a strawberry a
[26:16]Mouse a mouse and a human a human but otherwise they all
[26:22]have the same four letters is how you put them together so
[26:27]again people say ah see it's the same letters so it has
[26:32]to be the same origin we say not necessarily it's the same
[26:37]designer Allah the same creator out of his magnificence he's trying to
[26:42]tell us look I use four letters and rearrange them in a
[26:48]way to make a Mouse a mouse and a tree a tree
[26:52]the same four letters subhanallah can you do this again even the
[26:58]production now those of you who study the DNA and how it's
[27:03]produced or how it's made and the codons for example and the
[27:05]making of the Machinery proteins and so on so forth how could
[27:10]that just be a random process if any mistake happened in the
[27:15]DNA you have a problem it's a very tight you know process
[27:22]very controlled process how did all this happen so our argument would
[27:26]would be that just because the codons of the DNA are similar
[27:30]that does not suggest that there is the same origin but rather
[27:37]the same Creator one creator then that leaves us with one last
[27:41]thing so people say okay and this was an issue with the
[27:48]Christian theology Christians some priests they kind of traced back the age
[27:54]of Earth but how did they do it they went back with
[27:56]the age of the prophets they started they said they suggested that
[28:01]Adam came and so with Adam it means Earth was created that's
[28:08]what some Christian priests suggested and therefore when they started going back
[28:13]you know how much time is between us and Adam give or
[28:20]take so here and there whatever 17 000 years 20 000 years
[28:24]25 000 years so they suggested that this is the age of
[28:29]the Earth again that's in some Christian Priest Some Christian priest suggested
[28:35]this scientists came they did some analogies and studies they said that's
[28:40]not true Earth is much older than 25 000 years we say
[28:43]okay no problem so that's a suggestion that was a suggestion by
[28:47]a priest they say okay you guys claim that Adam is the
[28:53]father of humanity we say yes okay you're all the children of
[29:00]Adam say yes just as a side note by the way side
[29:04]note here I don't want to digress but there is a professor
[29:07]who studied DNA he found DNA in an organelle inside the cell
[29:13]called the mitochondria [Applause] DNA is usually found in the nucleus but
[29:19]the DNA in the nucleus changes through the process of meiosis those
[29:26]of you who you know as as cell division happens so they
[29:32]discovered DNA in the mitochondria which was quite interesting and the unique
[29:40]thing about the DNA in the mitochondria is conserved it does not
[29:45]undergo the process of you know interchange and so on so forth
[29:49]so what he did what the scientist did was Trace back the
[29:55]origin of the DNA in the mitochondria and he suggested he suggested
[30:00]that there is actually an atom and there is an eve that's
[30:06]what that DNA and the mitochondria suggests now there is some controversy
[30:12]when he proposed this some scientists said what are you talking about
[30:15]you know how could there be you now all of a sudden
[30:18]you're talking about creation now you're saying what the Christians are saying
[30:21]is true but besides the point interestingly he suggested there is an
[30:25]Adam and an eve now so they come back to us they
[30:32]say okay you guys claim that Adam and Eve Adam were the
[30:35]first of Allah's creation on this Earth and you you guys are
[30:40]The Descendants we say yes we are the descendants of Adam and
[30:42]Eve they say what about the discoveries that we make about some
[30:46]fossils of human beings or what look like human beings we call
[30:53]them the Netherlands who are like hundred thousand years old or more
[30:58]give or take if you claim that Adam is only 25 000
[31:02]years old where did these guys come from here alhamdulillah in the
[31:08]school gave us answers first of all ah Ayah number 31 Allah
[31:25]says when your lord said to the angels that I am making
[31:28]a representative on Earth they say it will you put on this
[31:40]Earth one who will cause corruption and bloodshed question how did the
[31:45]Angels know how did the Angels know that this formula is making
[31:55]is gonna cause corruption and bloodshed it suggests that maybe they have
[32:04]seen an experience from a previous generation when they saw the same
[32:09]mixture these components are put together they may suggest a similar issue
[32:13]and hence they kind of made that deduction Allah responded to them
[32:21]I have knowledge of things that you guys don't know about now
[32:26]I'm not here to discuss what is that knowledge and so on
[32:27]and so forth but the whole point is how did the Angels
[32:32]know so that's one thing then there is a Hadith foreign [Music]
[33:00]he has a book called comes it's narrated where he tells jabero
[33:12]evidence do you think that Adam your Adam was the first Adam
[33:18]to walk on this Earth before your Adam beware according to this
[33:23]narration a thousand Adams who walked on this Earth suggesting maybe there
[33:30]was a creation before our creation who walked on this Earth but
[33:36]from the Hadith that creation terminated I mean we are not the
[33:42]descendants of that creation we are the descendants of Adam you know
[33:49]as the tradition says that you're all from Adam and Adam was
[33:53]created from Sand so apparently our generation of humanity we are all
[34:00]the descendants of Adam and Hawa okay however there may have been
[34:04]other Generations who walked on this Earth before us this would explain
[34:11]what we observed today in terms of fossils and it seems from
[34:16]that it seems that that creation was not as sophisticated as us
[34:22]interestingly until now now maybe they will find later but so far
[34:28]so far they have not found any civilization or evidence of a
[34:35]civilization from let's say a hundred thousand years ago yes they may
[34:39]find a civilization from the Egyptians you know like our generation of
[34:43]humanity from the Indians for example the Persians the Mayans and so
[34:47]on so forth you'll find but from a hundred thousand years ago
[34:53]we have not yet seen a civilization okay so it suggests God
[34:58]knows best that they may not have been as sophisticated as we
[35:02]are Allah but this is all the response that we have to
[35:06]this and then of course when we come to the Quran Quran
[35:10]clearly says the Creator he is the former the one who formed
[35:20]the shapes he shaped he gave the images and so on so
[35:25]forth Allah is the creator and Allah repeatedly in the Quran suggest
[35:34]to us that look at the signs him yeah and you look
[35:42]at the look at yourselves and you'll see the Perfection and the
[35:46]beauty inside what does [Music] and you claim to be a small
[35:54]tiny thing but within you there's a whole world inside you and
[35:58]even today many Physicians interestingly you talk to some Physicians because of
[36:03]the advancement of medicine they become specialized so there is a cardiologist
[36:07]there is a nephrologist urologist and so on so forth and sometimes
[36:11]when you talk to somebody like a cardiologist about the bones he
[36:14]says I don't really know much that's not my field at all
[36:18]but you're a physician says that's not my field of you know
[36:20]yeah and it's become so sophisticated one day I was talking to
[36:24]um a sergeant a bone surgeon and I you know we're having
[36:31]a conversation so I started speaking to them about kidney stones I
[36:33]told him I did my PhD on kidney stones and started explaining
[36:35]certain things to him he says you probably know more about kidney
[36:39]stones than I do but you're a physician he says that's not
[36:42]my field that's not my field so it's become so sophisticated that
[36:49]even doctors these days if he it goes a little out of
[36:54]his specialization he says I don't know much that's it that's my
[36:57]limit yeah I mean how complicated is this body where even a
[37:00]doctor would say this is not my color I don't know I
[37:04]don't know much this whole complexity again I go back to the
[37:11]point we mentioned earlier complexity suggests there is a designer a maker
[37:16]of this complexity and all this shows that Allah is the maker
[37:20]so here in this Ayah Allah in the Ayah number eight says
[37:26]we created you and here Allah says pairs is male and female
[37:49][Music] Allah when he refers to the creation he says it's male
[37:57]and female these are the two Creations that we have made in
[38:02]this world according to many ayat of the Quran we created you
[38:09]o people from a male and a female foreign now insha Allah
[38:26]in the next session we'll discuss a little bit more about this
[38:32]whole concept of Allah created the male and the female and the
[38:37]concept of marriage and how marriage is also a blessing of Allah
[38:41]of the Quran where he says that it is a sign of
[38:47]I of of Allah the signs of Allah that he created for
[38:59]you from amongst yourselves spouses insha Allah we ask Allah to increase
[39:05]our understanding of the Holy Quran and our belief and submission to
[39:10]him
