[30:13]elders brothers and sisters in islam there's so many verses in hadith

[30:20]about this topic that i don't know which one to take the

[30:23]topic i want to talk about today very shortly inshallah is important

[30:31]something very relevant something that applies to all of us brothers and

[30:35]sisters and this is related to or self-worth or there is that

[30:45]we have now you see as human beings irrespective of our faith

[30:52]we have a feeling we have a need inside us to feel

[30:59]important to be worthy to feel like we have a place in

[31:07]society to feel important as simple as that and we do things

[31:14]in our lives we're motivated to do things by this thirst that

[31:17]we have to be important in fact the opposite is also true

[31:23]that we don't like to be not appreciated not valued imagine if

[31:28]somebody that you really love and respect when they come to says

[31:33]they're not so important you feel devastated you feel very bad like

[31:41]you feel depressed why because you want to be important because you

[31:45]want to be worthy and valuable and so this thirst first is

[31:52]that this thirst for self-esteem is something very natural in all human

[31:58]beings it is discussed very much in today's world as well the

[32:02]discussion of self-esteem and self-confidence and how we compose and how we

[32:06]we are as individuals within society but the main question lies here

[32:15]and that is what gives us worth what gives us importance what

[32:24]makes us worthy individuals before i discuss this question i want to

[32:36]tell you what doesn't and to do this i want to discuss

[32:41]two very quick examples of how in today's world the corporate world

[32:47]is using this thirst that all of you over here and myself

[32:50]and all the sisters and all human beings have they're using this

[32:55]thirst for other purposes and what they are doing is that they

[32:58]are changing our understanding of what gives us worth and in consequence

[33:05]this has very detrimental effects in our lives especially mental health example

[33:15]number one is related to adverts in the world of consumerism adverts

[33:26]want to tell us what gives us worth why because they want

[33:31]you to buy their products so what they do is that they

[33:36]change your perception or what really matters in your life what really

[33:40]brings worth and value to you and they've come with this very

[33:47]key important matter and that is the more you consume the more

[33:52]worthy you are the more you consume the more worthy the more

[33:57]worthy you are they will tell you [Music] that if you buy

[34:05]this particular item this particular car or this particular watch you're worth

[34:11]it if you don't you've missed out you're not so important if

[34:17]you don't have this particular type of clothing or this particular gadget

[34:22]your value is very less and this is why when you get

[34:31]in a very beautiful porsche or lamborghini you feel important you feel

[34:37]special if you're driving a nissan micra for all due respect you

[34:40]don't feel so special why because we've been told the more you

[34:47]consume the more important you are and what's even worse is that

[34:53]we judge people according to this as well so when you see

[34:56]somebody coming out of a seven series for example dressed very partially

[35:03]with a 30 000 pound watch straight away you give him respect

[35:08]you trust him straightaway you trust him you respect him an honorable

[35:12]person but one day he meets somebody in a very simple quarter

[35:17]very decent simple you don't straightaway trust them you're actually looking for

[35:24]clues in when they say something how they react you're looking for

[35:27]clues of how important this person should i become friend with him

[35:31]shall i try more with him i'm not sure what's his worth

[35:36]what's his value can i trust him cannot trust him why what

[35:40]happened because the criteria is what the criteria's importance and value and

[35:44]worth comes with the more someone's consumed this is how we think

[35:54]in this materialistic consumerism world open and cook open happiness when a

[36:04]million dollar million pounds and you become happy throughout the day and

[36:09]these are research i'm not quoting random there's our research out there

[36:12]the studies out there you can see this how adverse today they

[36:17]impact how we perceive ourselves how we perceive the worth of the

[36:22]human being so this is one example another example is related to

[36:31]body image we're told that 50 of adverts use body image and

[36:41]beauty as product appeal what does this result in this results in

[36:45]again having a perception of what beauty is that if you have

[36:54]a particular type of physical body then this is what we count

[36:59]as beauty and this is what's going to give you respect and

[37:01]worth and value and make you happy so you're trained to think

[37:08]you've been influenced to think that this is what this is where

[37:12]beauty lies this is what defines human beauty and what defines human

[37:17]worth that if i don't have this i'm not worth it if

[37:22]i don't have this i don't have too much value that person

[37:27]who has it they have worth in fact and this is shown

[37:33]in so many studies out there that teenage depression teenage anxiety out

[37:38]there today is related to what is related to us or as

[37:45]teenagers seeing this ideal image which studies suggest that only one percent

[37:49]of a normal person is able to achieve that kind of body

[37:53]they feel depressed why do they feel depressed i'm not important why

[37:57]are not important because i haven't achieved this type of body and

[38:00]they do all sorts of crazy things why because i need to

[38:05]achieve that that's become my goal why because that's very important this

[38:08]is where wealth and value lies so you see these are two

[38:19]examples where we've been taught something we've been influenced to think in

[38:24]a particular way regarding what regarding the worth of the human being

[38:30]and studies have shown that this has very detrimental impact in our

[38:36]lives so question you asked me why why isn't this going to

[38:43]give human worth and value why isn't having a very beautiful car

[38:48]and dressing up very nicely and very importantly inviting all these things

[38:53]consuming this world isn't that going to give us worth why doesn't

[38:55]it give us worth and value to answer this question we need

[39:04]to know ourselves to answer this question point number two it's like

[39:10]you know i have a three-year-old daughter she's holding a big marker

[39:15]she goes in my office and she picks up a contract worth

[39:17]three million pounds and she just colors all over it you can

[39:21]say what are you doing do you know how much worth this

[39:28]do you know how much this is a worth 300 303 million

[39:30]pounds over here and she's like how am i supposed to know

[39:35]the problem is what the problem is that she doesn't understand the

[39:40]value of this us as human beings we're the same [Music] if

[39:44]we don't understand our true worth our true potential what really gives

[39:51]us value then we spoil ourselves we consume from this world not

[39:58]realizing that we're actually destroying ourselves we're not gaining anything it's like

[40:08]for example you know when you come to a very posh restaurant

[40:12]you go 20 000 20 different types of dishes three massive cakes

[40:16]ice cream everything in the moment enter your kids just run straight

[40:19]for the ice cream you know just stop stop you know it's

[40:22]the first restaurant like please behave like stop acting like greedy boys

[40:30]why because you want to tell me you know there's more to

[40:35]the world than this like you need to grow up be mature

[40:40]be there's more to this world than cake this is how we

[40:42]are towards this world as well our imam is telling us come

[40:45]down there's more things there's more valuable things for you than this

[40:49]world you are more important than this you are great in this

[40:55]this doesn't give you value the more you consume the more valuable

[40:59]you are is not a true equation why in very summary version

[41:05]the answer is because you are not a material being this is

[41:12]key when you understand yourself when you grow up from being a

[41:16]three-year-old girl who's gonna cut on everything or that little boy was

[41:21]running behind cake you grow up a little bit you become mature

[41:23]you understand your value you realize that i am not a material

[41:28]being i am enough aurora wherever you want whatever it is who

[41:37]really i am is something immaterial yes i'm interacting with you through

[41:43]this physical body but who i really am is something immaterial if

[41:48]that is the case then it is impossible for something material to

[41:51]give me value because it is lower than me simple the moment

[42:00]you realize that i am something immaterial i am something beyond space

[42:08]and time that it is not possible for me to find any

[42:12]worth in something that's lower than me it's not possible for it

[42:17]to give me and this is why we have so much emphasis

[42:22]on two things in islam one is that know yourself and to

[42:29]value yourself value yourself and the moment you value yourself the more

[42:35]you give worth to yourself the moment you build true self-esteem naturally

[42:40]one of the consequences is what that you'll feel this dunya as

[42:47]well as not worth anything says a person who has a crown

[42:55]for himself a person who values himself a person who gives worth

[42:58]to himself not that he doesn't have from this world high from

[43:06]this world have your big cars in your big houses very important

[43:10]it's not saying don't have it says don't give don't think that

[43:14]gives you worth islam never says don't have from this world yes

[43:23]drive very nice cars have a good job just know one thing

[43:29]that this never gives you worth this is not what's going to

[43:31]give you value don't think you're important because you have it there's

[43:35]greater things for you you are greater than this doesn't make a

[43:46]difference okay so question next question point number three is that okay

[43:51]what does that what gives me value you just mentioned that this

[43:55]world doesn't consuming this world doesn't give me value then what does

[43:59]what gives me worth and value what makes the human being valuable

[44:06]that you become the best of creation what gives you this only

[44:16]one thing and that is a relationship with allah the more faith

[44:24]we have the more iman we have the closer we get to

[44:29]allah the more worth the human being has and this subhanallah everybody

[44:35]understands even those who are so much engulfed in this world the

[44:43]moment they see a person who has established a true relation with

[44:48]allah they wish they had this because they know inside them the

[44:53]filter knows that true human worth is acquired only through the relation

[44:58]with allah let me give you an example once moravia comes to

[45:05]medina this is after the shahada of and others narrate this report

[45:12]they said that was brought to the in his company he says

[45:28][Music] describe to me so there are some like leave me alone

[45:35]please i'm not i don't describe it like excuse me don't mind

[45:38]there's no need and water insists mother says no i want you

[45:46]to describe me ali daniel dara says if there's no choice if

[45:53]i have no choice then listen to me and then goes on

[45:57]to describe ali and he picks that aspect of ali where he

[46:04]describes how beautiful his relationship with allah with allah and look what

[46:10]happens that he was far sighted he was foresighted strong eloquent in

[46:21]speech just when passing judgment and then he says by allah i

[46:27]swear to you i saw him in the darkness of the night

[46:30]in masjid when the stars were coming down this is the last

[46:34]part of the night he was in the mihrab his body was

[46:39]trembling and shaking as he was talking to allah and he was

[46:44]holding his beard and he was crying what was he saying he

[46:48]said as if it is as if i can hear him and

[46:51]he was saying is it me that you're trying to show yourself

[46:58]to and showing me your attractions go away worry go and deceive

[47:04]somebody else i have divorced you three times why um because your

[47:15]lifespan is very short your beauty and your goodness is unworthy says

[47:25]having this deep sigh on how little is my provision and how

[47:31]long is this journey this journey of eternity the day of judgement

[47:35]the sarat has 50 stations and each station you get stopped a

[47:39]hundred years a thousand years when you have account for your deeds

[47:42]one station after after the other border suffered how long is this

[47:48]journey of eternity and how little is my provision how little is

[47:53]my luggage and as it describes this beautiful scene of amir al-mu'min

[48:01]talking to allah his beard is wet he's wiping his tears with

[48:13]his sleeves and people around him are crying what happened they realized

[48:19]they know know this is worth they know this is the most

[48:23]amazing of people and what brought this amazement what makes ali islam

[48:31]the most amazing of people the dunya no namba says his sandals

[48:39]would he couldn't serve his sandals how much they were unworthy this

[48:46]is now we are approaching the days of muharram we are approaching

[48:54]the days when we remember imam hussain one of the very important

[48:57]topics that we can discuss that we remind ourselves in these days

[49:02]is related to the self-esteem is related to this essa of the

[49:12]nerves and so many steps in the story of karbala you find

[49:17]this that imam hussain stands for this word of the human being

[49:23]that i am ready to abandon everything that in sun acquires this

[49:32]worth some mankind doesn't forget that where are you going to get

[49:37]this is that you are not going to get this is a

[49:39]in this world by attaching yourself to this world wake up mankind

[49:48]once he delivers a speech saying that mankind is has a necklace

[49:58]called death that's how close it is it describes the wealth says

[50:02]look my situation is this right now that this person whatever it

[50:09]is he has brought me to a situation where i have true

[50:14]choice either i die or i acquire humiliation i am between death

[50:20]and villa and never will i acquire humiliation we as shares of

[50:32]ali we as people who remember imam hussain we say the same

[50:35]thing never should we be disgraced we have hazard we have dignity

[50:45]and honor and value and worth but know one thing that this

[50:54]is taken away if we are attached to this world if we

[51:00]abide by this philosophy of consumerism we attach ourselves to this world

[51:08]this world brings about zella look at your son you know don't

[51:11]take uh as a very small person he's not a small person

[51:15]he's looking for a commander to send an army to karbala um

[51:18]running away he's like i don't want to go i'm not interested

[51:22]to fight him i want to say he's a scholar he's a

[51:27]person who's understood things it takes a lot of bribing it takes

[51:31]a lot of threat for him to come to karbala even when

[51:33]it comes to karbala he wants to avoid this plenty of negotiations

[51:39]that happened but there is one thing he's attached to this world

[51:45]i can't let go and so when the imam tells him like

[51:51]look come on my side forget isaac forget the hereafter all that

[51:58]guaranteed i'll give you security i'll give you wealth he can't accept

[52:05]us he can't take it he's attached and so you realize that

[52:13]comes from where it comes from detachment again i repeat having is

[52:18]not the issue it is when we are attached and therefore when

[52:25]we look at the concept of isa in islam another very important

[52:30]concept that we find is freedom there's a very very interesting series

[52:36]of articles that we translated recently regarding freedom it's a very important

[52:42]topic we talk about freedom all the time today today's world freedom

[52:45]is a very big concept true freedom in islam is to be

[52:54]detached from the shackles of humiliation see freedom is what is true

[53:00]we all want to be free when i say you want to

[53:02]be free everybody wants to be free it's very natural for all

[53:04]human beings to be free just that is it is natural for

[53:10]human means to be honorable and have dignity this freedom and dignity

[53:14]comes together that which ties you down that which doesn't allow you

[53:20]to grow that which captures you and doesn't allow you to make

[53:31]the right decisions yes and this is why the dunya disgraces you

[53:39]this is why when you attach into this world you're very low

[53:43]and petty you have no worth you look around you you look

[53:50]at people who have so much attachment to this world to this

[53:54]world they have no worth what it takes for them to do

[53:58]something very important they can't they're not independent thinkers they're not free

[54:06]thinkers they can't make decisions they can't be honorable in this life

[54:13]why they can't sacrifice why because they're attached so what does this

[54:17]attachment do it brings you down it pulls you down and this

[54:23]is the message of karbala this is the message of imam hussain

[54:28]this is what he talks about another story over here for us

[54:34]is coming back from kufa and imam asks him tell me about

[54:36]the people of kufa and he says this famous sentence you've heard

[54:40]that their hearts are with you but their swords are against you

[54:43]and the mom says yes you what you're saying is correct people

[54:50]are servants of wealth what does that mean it means that they

[54:55]have attached themselves to wealth so much that they can't come out

[54:59]they can't be free they're servants they're slaves imagine if i told

[55:05]you today that you're a slave and your master is humiliating you

[55:10]you feel really bad slavery goes against dignity right we abolish slavery

[55:17]because of what because of human dignity but today you're a slave

[55:21]of wealth it means what it means that when you have to

[55:24]make a decision and be independent in your decision you can't oh

[55:28]my family my work my car my watch what happened i thought

[55:34]you're a free man no you're not a free man you're a

[55:40]slave of this world and i'm saying says i've come to karbala

[55:44]to save you from this shackles to free you these people who

[55:56]they're slaves of this world religion is just something that they talk

[56:01]about they come they pray they fast mom says no that as

[56:06]long as their bread and butter is secure religion is what they

[56:10]care about but the moment they're faced with difficulties very few are

[56:17]those who are religious true religious those who have achieved success those

[56:21]people have achieved true honor through dignity so to summarize before we

[56:27]move on to messiah we need to realize that the concept of

[56:30]self-esteem is very important is that enough is very important we need

[56:35]to raise our children we need to inculcate our youth and ourselves

[56:38]this idea that we need to be very honorable full of dignity

[56:43]full of importance this is not arrogance because we realize that this

[56:50]dignity this work this self-worth comes from word comes from our attachment

[56:53]to allah comes from faith comes from iman when we have this

[56:59]we're very full of worth and value and we need to be

[57:05]free free from the shackles and the slavery of this world because

[57:09]when it comes to making the right decisions if we are attached

[57:15]somewhere else then we won't be able to make decisions so our

[57:19]worth and our value and our self-esteem lies in one thing in

[57:24]our email assalaamu foreign we've gathered tonight on this evil friday such

[57:59]a beautiful day to remember the days of muharram are coming we

[58:09]prepare our hearts to remember imam al-hussein [Music] to bring our hearts

[58:18]back to life through the remembrance of karabakh remember tonight the children

[58:39]of imam al-aquasan the trip the children of muslim and all these

[58:46]young souls in karabakh how is this event so tight with these

[58:55]young children these innocent young souls who are so present in this

[59:04]battle of caribala what happens before what happens after these young children

[59:09]give us hope and show us how we can achieve such amazing

[59:14]faith such amazing loyalty these two young boys who showed loyalty and

[59:29]who never gave up who always tells us on the truth steadfast

[59:35]on the path of william we also remember abdullah the son of

[59:41]imam al-hassan amongst all the children this is one amazing soul that

[59:48]on the day of ours hussein is fighting this young boy is

[59:55]looking at what is happening his aunt zainab is holding his hand

[60:09][Applause] suddenly this boy lashes out and he grows goes towards the

[60:17]battlefield forever he escapes from the hand of zainab or zainab what

[60:27]did you feel at that moment when abdullah the son of your

[60:32]brother he runs towards the battlefield and he reaches his uncle hussain

[60:37]he says oh my master what is happening to you when all

[60:43]of a sudden an arrow comes and hits this young boy and

[60:49]he falls onto the hands of imam al-hussein look at what [Applause]

[60:57][Music] we pray to allah subhanahu wa in this moment to forgive

[61:27]our sins the sins of our parents remember all the mean all

[61:33]the scholars all those who are right upon us inshallah whatever good

[61:36]there is in these gatherings inshallah we send the rewards of these

[61:42]gatherings to all those who are right upon us in allah okay
