[0:06]it's a lot we are celebrating the month of Ramadan a month
[0:14]of change great change and indeed change begins within us so the
[0:20]month of Ramadan is not only a month where we abstain from
[0:29]eating or drinking throughout the period of the fast but it's a
[0:34]period where our eyes also observed the fast so we do not
[0:42]observe that which God is not pleased with and we make sure
[0:45]we entertain our eyes with that which seeks the pleasure and the
[0:48]satisfaction of God furthermore our ears also fast so we do not
[1:00]engage in hearing that which this pleases God and we make sure
[1:04]that we entertain our ears with that which seeks the pleasure and
[1:10]the satisfaction of God and it brings us closer to him and
[1:14]I do not mean that we dedicate the entire period to supplications
[1:19]and prior so that we're sitting for example in the local mosque
[1:24]or an hour for example bedrooms and hearing the Holy Quran play
[1:30]or supplications or different types of Prayer what I mean by dedicating
[1:35]our ears and our eyes and our entire existence to God as
[1:38]to be able to conquer the highest mountains of human perfection through
[1:43]moral and ethical standards to do that which is moral to act
[1:48]with the utmost levels of ethical principles but change does not stop
[1:55]there change in the month of Ramadan continues and I recall that
[2:04]the Prophet Jesus the Son of Mary peace be upon him says
[2:08]that the prophets before me orange you not to commit adultery and
[2:15]I tell you not to think adultery so the month of Ramadan
[2:21]brings such a change within our lives we do not think of
[2:24]sin we do not contemplate on sin we cannot dedicate our mind
[2:30]and our soul to that which takes us away from God and
[2:33]by that I also mean we don't sit there and contemplate on
[2:39]God's existence or the prophet or his family throughout the whole day
[2:43]but we contemplate on things that bring us closer to God one
[2:47]of those things is to remind ourselves with them published with those
[2:53]who do not have clean water to drink while we're thirsty of
[2:57]the month of Ramadan with those suffering from hunger and starvation throughout
[3:01]the world how can we change that how can we change their
[3:04]lives we experience 17 hours of fast 17 and a half hours
[3:11]of fast I tried to sleep for the most part but and
[3:17]it's it's tiring it's tiring and you feel weak especially when the
[3:27]body is dehydrated and you need water but this continues for us
[3:31]for 29 or 30 days and that's it it's over but for
[3:37]some people especially in some impoverished parts of the world that's every
[3:42]day of their lives every day they don't have drink clean water
[3:45]to drink every day of their lives they don't have food to
[3:52]eat time I'm right one to one of the country's impoverished country
[3:55]and I was taken on a tour to visit some people we
[4:01]went intend to I mean it's not a home it's a small
[4:02]building its bricks on top of another doesn't even have a roof
[4:07]and also was missing for example a bathroom inside the so they
[4:11]would swim they opened the door there were six children that we're
[4:15]living in that particular home six children now this was eight years
[4:21]old eight years old none of them had shoes none of them
[4:28]had food and it was very cold and none of them had
[4:30]blankets they were shivering and this trip was when we were observing
[4:37]that we're observing how they lived so that we can bring aid
[4:40]and when I was leaving my mother held me she literally helped
[4:42]me she was crying she said we don't need anything we just
[4:46]want bread just send us some bread my kids do not have
[4:51]anything to fill their stomachs with so the month or another that
[4:53]is that month where stuff the change does not stop it continues
[4:57]where we dedicate our minds for several hours a day to think
[5:06]how is it that i personally even if you're 17 or 18
[5:09]years old don't tell me a 17 or 18 year old can
[5:12]I bring such change I know an 18 year old that raised
[5:17]a million orders for the orphans of Iraq I don't want at
[5:20]19 year old are a seven hundred thousand dollars for the orphans
[5:27]of Afghanistan so it's when we sit and we contemplate on what
[5:30]is it that we are required to do today in the 21st
[5:40]century to bring ourselves closer to God and change begins within us
[5:44]and then it takes part within our community and our community is
[5:48]in dire native need of change what do I mean several years
[5:55]ago pube and gallop those two very famous research centers they release
[5:59]some shocking numbers and polls in regards to the religion of Islam
[6:04]and North America amongst them was that thirty-nine percent of Americans would
[6:09]feel nervous if they had a Muslim neighbor thirty-four percent of Americans
[6:15]would feel nervous if they were on the same flight as a
[6:18]Muslim man eighteen percent of Americans would feel nervous if they boarded
[6:23]the same flight with us Muslim woman 51 percent of americans oppose
[6:31]the building of a mosque near Ground Zero why those changes those
[6:38]numbers and polls are extremely alarming and disturbing and they need to
[6:44]be changed and they need to be changed immediately and by that
[6:48]I mean we should not rest we should not settle we should
[6:54]not sleep until we change the minds of the average Joe when
[6:57]it comes to assume that Sun is not a religion of terror
[7:02]those individuals that you find on the news are not with sin
[7:05]they have nothing to do with a sound that Islam has nothing
[7:10]to do with them those are simple things we have to get
[7:14]them across but we're not loud enough for an average person we
[7:18]believe sometimes it look I don't need to really go and tell
[7:23]people that what's happening in Isis and Iraq is it has nothing
[7:25]this on everybody knows that no nobody knows a lot of people
[7:33]don't know and back forty-two percent of americans believe that's an average
[7:41]was sim as sympathetic with the terrorist groups so it is my
[7:47]role and it's my duty to let them know that this does
[7:53]not represent the religion of Islam and does not represent the Muslim
[7:59]community and therefore I would like to finish my talk how many
[8:05]minutes do I have 30 thank you I would like to conclude
[8:14]with the following three points we cannot bring those changes to our
[8:20]community unless we keep in mind the following three number one education
[8:25]what do I need my education I mean education for the entire
[8:31]Muslim community whether it's the community that lives in America or lives
[8:36]in the Middle East you see the reason sometimes some people ask
[8:40]you might have so many terrorists in Muslim countries said because we
[8:44]liked schools I've been to many of them if not every single
[8:49]one of them and I went to one of them and there
[8:51]was a an extremely important person in the government who SAT with
[8:56]me and he said you know how we define literacy in our
[8:58]country if you can write your name yet thirty-two percent of the
[9:01]people are early trip and there is terrorism in that country why
[9:10]because this person wakes up every morning feels really don't belong here
[9:15]and so actually he does not belong anywhere because he wakes up
[9:22]every morning people are going to work making good as me being
[9:25]able to pay rounds being able to drive a car being able
[9:29]to send their kids to school being able to buy them clothes
[9:32]this guy does not have that ability because he does not have
[9:34]any formal education so he suffers every day of his life as
[9:40]every day of his life is a suffering and he's in a
[9:43]trade from some remote village so he doesn't listen here's fifty thousand
[9:47]dollars for your family go buy them at home and in return
[9:50]you can go and have breakfast with a prophet and end your
[9:57]miseries why wouldn't he this person is simple he does not know
[10:01]anything more than maybe a four or five year old child growing
[10:09]up in New York and therefore that's why we have terrorism we
[10:11]don't need any more mosques in the Middle East we need schools
[10:15]we need universities and we also in Northern America we need to
[10:25]educate ourselves don't tell me it's important for me to go and
[10:29]pray for 30 days and recite the whole Quran every single day
[10:32]but they come in aesculus in this verse there's a pastor's name
[10:37]is Terry Jones he says you Muslims are supposed to kill non-muslims
[10:40]and this is it it's in the Quran how do you respond
[10:44]to this I tell them listen I've been praying for 20 years
[10:47]30 years reciting provided rod explain this verse to you that's a
[10:54]shame that's a shame Allah send us the Quran so we understand
[10:57]the bond we don't become tape players we're not an mp3 player
[11:02]I just reads reads reads the piranha we're supposed to understand why
[11:06]was this first review when was it revealed what is the purpose
[11:12]of this verse so we need to educate ourselves let's not create
[11:17]mosques do what we used to do back home because that has
[11:19]not been working across you we need to educate our youth when
[11:24]I will use come to this community and they even they go
[11:26]under asked by an employer by a friend by an employee at
[11:32]work about a person the crowd they're supposed to be there are
[11:36]meant to be able to give them a sufficient answer so number
[11:43]one is education number two is that we need to act like
[11:48]the Prophet Muhammad as well and by that I mean we need
[11:55]to condemn those who do not act like the Prophet Muhammad but
[11:58]yes they carry his name people that are killing innocent people barbaric
[12:08]animals they're not even human beings and they're all over the media
[12:15]what have I done personally to encounter them have I been nicer
[12:20]than I used I should be it's my responsibility when I have
[12:24]a non-muslim neighbor and my neighbor the plea won't come and tell
[12:27]you listen I'm nervous that you're my name honestly he won't do
[12:33]them but numbers and polls tell us that he is not as
[12:35]comfortable as if if he had a different neighborhood that was not
[12:39]Muslim so what do i do I have to go the extra
[12:42]mile and that's in the Quran be kind to your neighbor that
[12:47]is near and be kind to your neighbor that is far and
[12:48]every scholar of the Quran says near in faith and far from
[12:54]your faith so a visa for example an atheist he doesn't believe
[12:58]in God he's the neighbor that is far the neighbor that is
[13:03]near is the neighbor that believes in God be kind to that
[13:06]both of them if he needs to get things done on his
[13:12]traveling catches mail cleaning his house look after his pets go the
[13:16]extra mile that's when you start acting like the Prophet Muhammad that's
[13:20]when you will be representing the Prophet Muhammad Saleh and that is
[13:26]why I emphasize on the issue of neighbors be kind to your
[13:35]neighbors do not disturb your neighbors be the best of neighbors whether
[13:39]its neighbors at work or neighbors within your residents that live right
[13:44]next to you and number three the right representation leadership and with
[13:51]this I conclude and many of us Muslims we sometimes lack fair
[13:56]leadership meaning people represent different minorities in the West but when it
[14:01]comes to representing the religion of Islam there shaking representing Muslims there
[14:05]shaking engaging with a Muslim community not so much so he's engaged
[14:13]with our leadership with our representation in our local governments so that
[14:21]they represent us equally and this country Canada has embraced you and
[14:28]you have to embrace Canada you have to be patriotic you have
[14:33]to love your land defend your land those who are born and
[14:39]raised in this country your responsibility is no longer to defend any
[14:43]country in the release and is your responsibility to defend this land
[14:46]and the sign is not at war so you don't have to
[14:50]go on join the army defending this land means that you stick
[14:52]to its laws you become a good citizen and you have the
[14:59]best of input in this society you become the best of educators
[15:03]the best of lawmakers and you become part of the society a
[15:13]country that is based on religious equality and freedom and has proved
[15:18]that for many years though you've come to this country and its
[15:22]welcome to you while you ran away for a better life from
[15:27]your own true I a member several years ago well not separately
[15:34]many years ago when we got to LAX my family 16 men
[15:41]from my family were killed it up by some dumb so when
[15:48]we reached LAX the immigration officer stamped our passport saying welcome home
[15:51]this is your home and we have to be able to understand
[15:59]that and we have to be able to communicate that as well
[16:04]so the month of Ramadan is the month of change the month
[16:08]where we begin to change within ourselves and we take that change
[16:11]outside the borders of our family within our community and we hope
[16:17]for a better on Milan and a better year and the following
[16:20]year inshallah god bless you all with Saddam on a convoy with
[16:26]the long view / like I
