[0:00]foreign [Music] when several concerned parents reached out to me expressing the

[0:18]need for a community center for the followers of the alibate in

[0:21]the Canton and surrounding areas so we called for a meeting Gathering

[0:27]several families in this area to see what are the potential prospects

[0:33]of having a community center here for me it started with a

[0:36]phone call from say it Sada and you know the the ideas

[0:41]started to flow about what do you think of a an opportunity

[0:42]to to bring something to the Canton area I was just very

[0:47]excited about the opportunity it's been something that we've talked about at

[0:50]least in my family since 1998 when we moved to Canton it's

[0:54]just you know we've been harping on hey we need something here

[0:58]for us we had a positive productive meeting and we discussed the

[1:03]needs and the concerns of the families and there was a lot

[1:08]of excitement and interest So based on the reaction that we saw

[1:12]we put our trust in God and we started Mecca Mecca means

[1:16]exactly what it stands for it's a Muslim educational Community Center it's

[1:22]a place where people of diverse backgrounds can come together with a

[1:29]common vision and common goal to build a community it's a non-ethnocentric

[1:36]meaning a place that caters to the diverse cultural Mosaic of our

[1:42]community for people to come in together and practice their faith and

[1:46]build relationships so I think that's something that's special that's offered in

[1:53]the community it's Community centered it's family centered and it's youth centered

[1:58]and it's something that I feel very privileged and blessed to be

[2:03]a part of when I moved to Canton a few years ago

[2:07]I was worried that I won't have much access to an Islamic

[2:11]institution the way I did because maybe the Muslim or the Shia

[2:14]committee was small and I was concerned that my kids will not

[2:19]have that Islamic upbringing that I would like them to have so

[2:23]one day I heard of Mecca having a annual the first community

[2:27]of star dinner and it was during the night of power I

[2:32]attended my family and I met those beautiful diverse Muslim families we

[2:36]broke a star together we prayed we did even Amel a little

[2:40]khador and I was so like alhamdulillah God answer my prayer I've

[2:45]lived in Canton for about 23 years and I've always wished to

[2:49]have a community center for my kids to go to here in

[2:54]Canton but now that I am part of Mecca this will be

[2:55]something for my kids to be a part of as well as

[2:58]having a home for my grandkids to be part of the ribbon

[3:03]cutting ceremony was very emotional for me this is something that I've

[3:07]been dreaming about having in Canton and being part of in Canton

[3:10]and when we finally cut that ribbon I feel like the accomplishment

[3:15]is there I became the part of Makkah family because the first

[3:18]program I attended here was the white camel and the holiday program

[3:21]was organized and seeing the teamwork was so attractive so I decided

[3:26]yeah this is the place we need to bring our kids to

[3:30]learn our Islamic values we saw that the community in this area

[3:36]was mostly younger families with children and youth and in order to

[3:42]help these youth build a positive relationship with Islam we knew that

[3:46]we had to be Innovative and creative in our program the little

[3:49]ones they attend the public their Western you know Public Schools they

[3:52]don't feel like they belong with a lot of kids but macca

[3:56]now is is a place where they can come in and and

[3:59]they feel like this is me this is who I am this

[4:03]is where I want to be this is what what I want

[4:06]to learn and this is what I'm going to use to impact

[4:09]my life when I grow up all the events that Mecca is

[4:13]having agreed especially the Youth Event there's one aspect I truly love

[4:21]is the presence of Saint as a spiritual leader I admire the

[4:25]way he is so invested in our youth and this communication he

[4:30]has with them is exceptional we started non-traditional programming we celebrated the

[4:35]birth of Imam almadi on Ice we established a program called snack

[4:39]and chat Where We Gather at Heritage Park and the youth play

[4:46]sports and then we do a q a session followed by jamaa

[4:48]prayer we took the community on a boat tour after the Eid

[4:54]we were able to hold the youth majalis during the month of

[4:57]Muharram as well as the annual Muharram art competition with those events

[5:03]we can show that Mecca has provided a platform for the Youth

[5:08]to Showcase their leadership macca has become the second home for us

[5:12]and my family we are almost here every day there is always

[5:19]a program that fit one of our age groups there's something for

[5:24]the kids story times and some events for the teenagers the youth

[5:29]programs and all the events that they do throughout the month and

[5:35]of course the adult program is from Dua and ziaras and majalis

[5:39]and everything so every day we have something and our life has

[5:47]become a part of this Mecca group and our calendar our planning

[5:52]our vacations everything has has become part of this group so right

[5:57]after Mecca started we started getting requests from the parents to start

[6:01]a weekend School in this area so it's closer to home for

[6:05]them and we were excited to take on this project even though

[6:07]we have a small space we currently have 75 students enrolled in

[6:10]our weekend School we're using dividers we're being creative about combining different

[6:16]age groups but really having a comprehensive curriculum that includes Islamic Studies

[6:21]Quran meaning memorization and also history curriculum along with practice of Sada

[6:26]and so far it's been very well received and it's been very

[6:29]collegial to work with all the teachers I see Mecca being a

[6:33]full-fledged Community Center inshallah where all of us can come and enjoy

[6:44]and feel like home and where the kids can can be kids

[6:47]the adults can be adults and we all can come together as

[6:52]a one big Canton Community Mecca is a fast-growing organization and the

[6:57]community and its needs are growing by the day we need your

[7:01]support so that Mecca could continue to be a vibrant and robust

[7:06]organization serving Islam and the community in this area
