[0:00][Music] our respected guests dignitaries my respected brothers and sisters in faith
[0:14]and in humanity I greet you with the salutations of the religion
[0:21]of Islam assalam allum peace be with you 163 years ago in
[0:31]18 54 a young couple James and anas love migrate from Scotland
[0:42]to Canada now there were Muslims before them but they were the
[0:48]first recorded Muslims to have settled in Canada they had several children
[0:53]and their youngest son Alexander was born in 1868 so one year
[0:58]after the confederation so he's been recorded to be the first Muslim
[1:04]to be born in Canada Muslims have a long history in this
[1:11]country a wonderful productive history for example we see that in major
[1:17]Canadian events such as the building of the Canada Pacific Railroad which
[1:24]connected British Columbia to the rest of the country there were actually
[1:28]Muslim laborers who worked day and night to make this happen when
[1:35]you examine Muslims in this wonderful and this amazing country we see
[1:41]that many of them are actually educated 44% of Muslims aged from
[1:50]24 to 64 they have a college degree now when you compare
[1:55]it to the general population it's 26% now no and no way
[2:01]am I claiming that Muslims have smarter jeans I'm not trying to
[2:04]say that but Muslims do appreciate the opportunities presented to them in
[2:10]this wonderful country they don't take it for granted many of them
[2:13]do not take it for granted they take advantage of this wonderful
[2:19]opportunity and you know even 15% of Muslims they actually have a
[2:28]graduate degree more recently we see many Muslims very active politically here
[2:33]in Canada we've had over eight members of parliament so far we've
[2:37]had a couple of senators we've had over 10 provincial mlas so
[2:42]they're quite active and they've been productive they've been loyal to this
[2:47]country they're giving back to this wonderful country now unfortunately in the
[2:59]last year or so we've witnessed a number of terrorist attacks which
[3:04]were perpetrated by so-called Muslims people who only claim to be Muslims
[3:11]but know nothing of Islam last month we had the Manchester bombings
[3:16]which claimed the lives of innocent children the London Bridge incident last
[3:22]week and we were just told tonight that there's been an incident
[3:30]in Quebec somewhere with a stabbing and unfortunately these terrorist attacks have
[3:37]been doing damage to the image of Muslims to the reputation of
[3:42]Muslims across the world they've done a great deal of damage we
[3:49]see this in the media on social media on some major news
[3:53]channels especially in the United States and elsewhere we see that the
[4:00]damage has been done unfortunately now we Muslims whenever such events happen
[4:07]whenever a terrorist attack takes place somewhere you'll see that many Muslims
[4:12]feel cornered and pressured to come out and apologize as if they're
[4:22]somehow responsible so they have to apologize now let me be very
[4:27]clear I un equivocally denounce these terrorist attacks we condemn them in
[4:34]the strongest terms we express our condolences and sympathy for all those
[4:40]grieving families the families of the victims but the point that I
[4:44]would like to State tonight is that I will not apologize for
[4:50]what these terrorists did and I'll tell you why we have nothing
[4:55]in common with these terrorists they do not represent us in any
[4:59]way there's nothing for us to apologize for we condemn them we
[5:03]denounce them we consider an attack on those innocent people and attack
[5:10]on us but I'm not going to apologize because these people do
[5:15]not represent me in any way possible they claim to be worshiping
[5:20]God if the god that they worship teaches them to claim innocent
[5:25]lives that's not a god whom I worship when they commit these
[5:31]Act acts of Terror they invoke the name of Allah you've heard
[5:35]them allahar God is greatest before they blow up themselves or they
[5:40]kill somebody innocently that's not the Allah that I worship someone who
[5:45]tells them to claim innocent lives to blow themselves up the Allah
[5:50]that I worship tells me in the Quran that if you kill
[5:59]one innocent Soul you CLA claim one innocent life it's as if
[6:04]you've killed all of humanity and if you save one life it's
[6:09]as if you saved all of humanity the prophet whom they claim
[6:17]to follow Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him they claim to follow
[6:20]him they claim to have dinner with him later that day if
[6:23]they kill themselves a prophet who teaches you to kill others to
[6:29]kill children to kill innocent people that's not a prophet whom I
[6:33]follow that's not the Muhammad that I know the Muhammad that I
[6:39]know used to teach that if a Muslim if someone who considers
[6:44]himself a Believer if he spills a drop of blood unjustly he's
[6:50]not a Muslim there is no faith in his heart the Muhammad
[6:55]that I that I know once there was a battle it was
[7:00]a defensive battle there were pagans in Mecca who waged a war
[7:04]on Prophet Muhammad and those early Muslims that small Muslim Community in
[7:10]Medina those pagans waged the war so the prophet and the Muslims
[7:14]were simply defending themselves now in the midst of the battle they
[7:18]captured a man from the other side from the enemy who had
[7:23]come to kill them and they took him as a prisoner of
[7:25]war now that night they tied his hand that prisoner of war
[7:30]War because his hands were tied that man he was in discomfort
[7:36]so he was groaning all night you know expressing that he's not
[7:43]happy with this situation the prophet that night would hear him several
[7:49]hours later the Muhammad that I know he could no longer take
[7:53]it he came to his companions and he told them I have
[7:59]not slept for a single moment because I'm hearing this man in
[8:02]discomfort Please Release him free him the man had come to kill
[8:10]the prophet with the enemies to wage war and this is how
[8:12]Muhammad used to treat people like that this is the Muhammad that
[8:18]I know dinner with the prophet is there anything more ridiculous than
[8:22]that many of them do believe that by the way they really
[8:25]believe if they blow themselves up they're having dinner with the prophet
[8:30]now let's be fair to them there is going to be a
[8:35]dinner I won't disagree with them but not with the prophet they
[8:39]themselves are the are going to be the dinner for the snakes
[8:43]of Hellfire that's more that's a more likely scenario in fact these
[8:49]terrorists they themselves are snakes you know Jesus in the Bible in
[8:53]Matthew has an interesting statement he says oh you serpents you Generation
[8:58]of Vipers you think think you can escape the damnation of jna
[9:03]by the way jna is the name for hell in Arabic it's
[9:07]similar it's Janam these people they think they can escape the damnation
[9:16]of Hell the punishment of the almighty God for claiming innocent lives
[9:21]these people do not represent us in any way they do not
[9:24]Worship the Lord that we worship they do not follow the holy
[9:28]strips scripture that we follow they don't follow the prophet that we
[9:35]follow we have nothing in common with these people for us to
[9:38]apologize we condemn their acts but peaceloving Muslims are not responsible for
[9:48]these Thugs and what they do would it be fair to give
[9:52]you a few examples would it be fair to hold 36 million
[9:57]peaceloving Canadians responsible for some terrorist acts that have happened here recently
[10:04]you all remember back in January in Quebec City where Alexander Bonet
[10:10]he claimed six innocent lives in a mosque peaceloving Canadians should they
[10:17]come out and apologize yes they condemned the ACT they poured their
[10:25]sympathy and love for the Muslim Community but this man does not
[10:28]represent Canada he does not represent Canadians he does not represent the
[10:33]Prime Minister for him to come out and apologize he does not
[10:39]represent the premier in the United States just last month there was
[10:45]an incident in Portland many of you have heard about the incident
[10:48]where you had Jeremy Joseph Christian he stabbed two innocent men young
[10:56]men brave men who simply stood up to him because he was
[11:02]harassing two innocent Muslim females and he stabed them to death should
[11:07]we hold 330 million Americans responsible for this should we hold president
[11:15]Trump responsible for this now this one's a little bit tricky I
[11:19]don't know how to answer this one with all the hateful comments
[11:29]he's been saying attacking minorities having no respect for other religions I'm
[11:37]not sure about that one he makes it seem as if 1.5
[11:40]billion Muslims are responsible every time something happens he's got a problem
[11:46]with 20% of the world's population one fifth of the world are
[11:50]Muslims and every time he wants to hold all of them responsible
[11:58]for these attacks and this is absurd this is unfair to a
[12:03]fifth of the world's population now while he does that it's okay
[12:07]for him last month he went and he took the sword in
[12:12]his hand and he was dancing with evil dictators that's okay because
[12:15]he was milking $400 billion out of them he can get away
[12:20]with that it's fine but this is unfair this is absolutely unfair
[12:27]to hold 1.6 peaceful billion peace ful Muslims responsible for the acts
[12:33]of a few people who are not religious as has been mentioned
[12:36]by previous respected speakers because terrorism has no religion terrorism is antih
[12:43]Humanity it's anti-religion we really I think the world would would be
[12:50]a much better place if the president of the US acted a
[12:56]lot more like prime minister Trudeau having respect for minorities for people
[13:00]of other religions keeping away from hateful remarks I think the world
[13:05]would be a much better place welcoming immigrants who are fleeing war
[13:11]and persecution God has blessed us on this continent let's be generous
[13:16]and share these blessings because God has promised not only in the
[13:21]Holy Quran but in all scriptures that if you take my bounties
[13:25]and blessings and you share them with others with other fellow human
[13:31]beings I will increase my bounties and blessings on you but if
[13:35]we deny others the bounties and blessings that God has endowed us
[13:40]with then we'll have an issue God will consider us as ungrateful
[13:44]people as an ungrateful Nation but for the most part what you
[13:50]see in this wonderful Society in many other societies in Canada in
[13:54]the US and elsewhere I would say most people are grateful you
[13:58]see that spirit of mercy of compassion yes there are radicals there
[14:04]are extremists everywhere but I think the vast majority of the wonderful
[14:09]citizens of this country and neighboring countries they do have the spirit
[14:17]of generosity and this is what the month of Ramadan is all
[14:21]about respected guests Ramadan is special for a number of reasons but
[14:26]one very important reason why Ramadan is special is because it provides
[14:34]us a unique opportunity to break free from our routine from our
[14:39]daily schedule our daily program that for many people becomes simply a
[14:46]routine Ramadan offers you a break from that it gives you a
[14:54]spiritual an educational a social vacation even a healthy vacation and the
[15:00]month of Ramadan we cut back on food we say no to
[15:02]our desires and temptations we resist our desires and temptations why to
[15:07]strengthen our willpower if you can say no to your own desires
[15:13]to your selfish desires then you can say no to Injustice you
[15:17]can say no to oppression you can say no to bigotry and
[15:22]hatred in the holy month of Ramadan we gather together as one
[15:29]Community we strengthen our bonds our family bonds our community bonds we
[15:35]empathize with the poor and those who are hungry you can hear
[15:41]about Hunger all you want yes it does have an effect on
[15:44]you but the effect is limited once you yourself taste hunger you
[15:50]start to think about all those people in society who are underprivileged
[15:53]people around the world who suffer from poverty there's over a billion
[15:58]people on earth today who live on less than $1 a day
[16:03]we go months and years without even thinking about that doesn't even
[16:11]impact Us in any way Ramadan is an opportunity for us to
[16:14]reflect and think what can we do to protect our societies and
[16:20]to save these other people Ramadan gives us this beautiful opportunity to
[16:25]break from our routine schedule and focus on ourselves on our creator
[16:32]and on people because Islam teaches us that the best way to
[16:36]worship the Creator is to help the created because the created are
[16:42]the family of God he's the one who created us he's the
[16:48]one who has sustained us Ramadan teaches us that Spirit of generosity
[16:52]you know we have an Islamic narration that says prophet Abraham peace
[16:58]be upon him According to Islamic Traditions God instructed him to build
[17:04]the Kaaba now the Caba is that cubic shaped building in Mecca
[17:10]in the Grand Mosque it symbolizes the house of God it's symbolic
[17:14]and Muslims when they're praying five times a day they take the
[17:19]Kaaba as their Direction because it symbolizes the house of God so
[17:25]this Islamic narration tells us that when God instructed Abraham to build
[17:31]his house Abraham felt honored and proud when he finished the construction
[17:35]with his son ishmail so he was laughing he looked at the
[17:40]Kaa and he was smiling he was so happy imagine God gives
[17:45]you a task and you complete it wouldn't you be happy God
[17:49]revealed to him he told him oh Abraham I see that you're
[17:55]smiling you're happy he says of course God I'm happy I've completed
[17:58]this amazing task why would I not be happy God told him
[18:03]Abraham but do you want me to be happy as well do
[18:06]you want to make me happy he says yes God I just
[18:13]finished this task what do you want me to do God told
[18:14]him what really makes me happy is for you to go out
[18:19]in society and see if there's anyone poor help him if there's
[18:22]anyone distressed help him anyone who's sick or ill help him that's
[18:30]how you really make me happy and God was teaching Abraham that
[18:33]this is the essence of worship yes on the outside you've got
[18:37]this Kaa this cubic shaped building you pray but the core of
[18:45]prayer the essence of prayer is for you to share what you
[18:47]have with other fellow human beings and this is what Ramadan is
[18:53]all about this Spirit of generosity and I conclude by sharing with
[19:03]you one beautiful incident that inspires us Muslims today was the 15th
[19:10]of the month of Ramadan so we're halfway through this holy month
[19:15]and today many Muslims celebrated an important event which was the birth
[19:21]of Imam Hassan the grandson of prophet Muhammad peace be upon Him
[19:26]Imam Al Hassan peace be upon him whenever I examine his life
[19:34]and his contributions he is truly the symbol of generosity the symbol
[19:39]of Tolerance history tells us that one day a man came from
[19:46]Syria from Damascus now at the time there was an evil Dictator
[19:50]by the name of muawiya he was ruling over that region muawiya
[19:55]had waged a number of wars on Imam Hass and on his
[20:01]father IM Ali as well he had this hatred towards the family
[20:04]of the prophet he waged many wars a man came from Syria
[20:10]and he was brainwashed he had heard all of this propaganda against
[20:14]the prophet's family so he came his heart was full of hatred
[20:18]towards Imam alassan when he saw the IM in Medina in the
[20:23]street in the presence of everyone he started attacking Al IM alassan
[20:28]denouncing him slandering him even cussing at him using very derogatory language
[20:36]profane language what did IM Hassan peace be upon him do with
[20:39]this man although he had the power he could have just instructed
[20:42]the guards to take care of this man the Imam came he
[20:50]embraced him he told him oh man I see that you are
[20:54]a stranger you've come from a different place if you have no
[20:58]place I'll give you a place place if you have no refuge
[21:03]I'll give you a refuge if you have no money I'll give
[21:06]you money and the Imam peace be upon Him kept showing him
[21:09]that compassion the man was utterly shocked I just cussed at you
[21:15]and this is how you treat me history tells us that the
[21:18]man he broke into tears and he fell at the feet of
[21:24]Ali Hassan and he says forgive me oh Imam for God truly
[21:29]knows whom to choose as leaders for Humanity and you are one
[21:33]of those leaders this is the spirit of generosity that we learn
[21:36]from our religion and we spread the spirit of generosity in our
[21:45]society thank you so much my respected brothers and sisters our distinguished
[21:49]guests may God bless you it's been an honor to host you
[21:51]this evening I thank every one of you for making this occasion
[21:58]a special one by your attendance and your participation I will keep
[22:04]you all in my prayers and may God bless you all salamu
[22:08][Applause] [Music]
