[0:00]Oh salat wa salam o allah sayidina muhammadin wa ala nabina pah
[0:06]hearing a llama salli ala muhammadin wa ala muhammad respected brothers and
[0:13]sisters assalamu alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh may allah subhanahu wata'ala accept your deeds
[0:22]your arm al your fasting in this blessed and holy month of
[0:27]Ramadan one of the challenges are fasting in the summer months if
[0:37]you live in northern latitudes is very long summer days and some
[0:43]parts of the world such as north northern Europe or let's say
[0:47]in Alaska or northern Canada in this summer you know from the
[0:57]latter part of May June July August the days become very long
[1:02]sometimes the days may be 22 hours long meaning the fasting hours
[1:09]from Federer until mezrab it could be 22 hours it could be
[1:16]23 hours sometimes some people are not able to fast that long
[1:22]or there is the concern with dehydration for you not to take
[1:31]in any liquids for such a long time could be detrimental to
[1:35]your health you're putting yourself at risk you're putting pressure on your
[1:42]kidneys on your other body organs so what have these scholars ruled
[1:48]on fasting long hours are we obligated to fast such long hours
[1:58]or no scholars have various opinions here when it comes to their
[2:04]fatwa many Mirada and scholars they have maintained that you have to
[2:09]keep fasting until it becomes harmful to you so you start fasting
[2:15]in the morning you make the near you make the intention and
[2:17]you go throughout the day so let's say sunset is at 11:00
[2:27]p.m.
[2:23]11:30 p.m.
[2:25]now at 7:00 8:00 p.m.
[2:30]if you feel fatigued to the point where it's unbearable or you
[2:34]really feel like you're getting dizzy you need to get hydrated you're
[2:38]now going to get harmed then you break your fast so there
[2:45]fatwa is you're not allowed to break your fast in the morning
[2:47]and say okay because we have very long summer days here that
[2:52]I'm just not going too fast I'll skip the fast all together
[2:55]this is not permissible you make the NIA too fast and you
[2:59]continue throughout the day if you managed to go to 11:00 11:30
[3:05]p.m.
[3:03]without any issues without any serious concerns then you fasted that day
[3:12]and you fulfilled the obligation but if several hours before sunset you
[3:17]feel like the fastest taking a toll on you it's getting to
[3:20]a point where it's no longer normal right see some level of
[3:24]fatigue is normal when you're not eating drinking for even 12 hours
[3:31]10 hours you kind of do feel fatigued you might feel a
[3:35]little bit weak but if there is anything that's abnormal you feel
[3:40]like you're about to pass out or you're getting too dizzy or
[3:44]you really feel like you're getting dehydrated in that case they have
[3:49]ruled that you can break your fast you don't have to pay
[3:55]a kaffarah because now you have an excuse but then later on
[3:58]when the days are shorter you do have to make up this
[4:00]thing so I know this is somewhat difficult for a lot of
[4:07]people to observe because you're fasting most of the day and then
[4:10]in addition to that you have to make it up after the
[4:15]month of ramadhan one point here to mention my dear brothers and
[4:20]sisters about dehydration there are some people who think that if you
[4:24]fast even if it's six hour 10 hours 12 hours you will
[4:33]harm your body because your body needs to stay hydrated all the
[4:38]time a lot of the moisture and the water that the body
[4:43]means is to digest food your digestive system needs a lot of
[4:54]water especially to eliminate the toxins from the food the more food
[4:58]you eat the more water you need to detoxify your body to
[5:03]digest the food and eliminate the harmful substances in the food many
[5:10]people miss this fundamental point here that when we fasts and the
[5:14]religion of Islam we're also not eating you're not eating and you're
[5:18]not drinking so when you're not eating for 12 to 15 16
[5:25]hours your need for water and moisture is reduced therefore if a
[5:31]person is healthy they're not under any extreme circumstances not having any
[5:38]liquids for 14 hours 15 hours 16 hours is not harmful to
[5:44]the body because at the same time the person is not eating
[5:46]anything so your body needs less water yes if you were to
[5:52]be eating and during these 15 hours and you're not drinking anything
[5:55]that's recipe for a disaster that's going to harm your health so
[5:59]keep that point in mind these scholars therefore have ruled that you
[6:04]keep fasting until you feel it's getting harmful to you then you're
[6:10]allowed to break your fast they also suggest trying to change your
[6:13]schedule maybe if you can if you have the option the luxury
[6:18]of changing your schedule in the month of Ramadhan such that you
[6:22]sleep during the day and that would help you cope with fasting
[6:25]long hours then that would be an obligation to at least pursue
[6:32]that to try to see if that's possible for you now there
[6:36]are other scholarly opinions here a number of Miraj today you know
[6:40]at least four or five of the Mahajan scholars that I know
[6:45]of they have a different jurisprudential fatwa for fasting long hours basically
[6:53]they have stated that once the day is unusually long some of
[7:00]those Mirada have divine defined a normal usual day at around seventeen
[7:10]and a half hours 18 hours if the day is longer than
[7:13]that if you have to fast 20 hours 19 hours 22 hours
[7:20]they say that this day is unusually long so it's not a
[7:24]normal day and to have such a short night 3 hours only
[7:30]is not normal allah subhanaw taala tells us and all the quran
[7:34]to continue fasting at 2 mostly ana in a lane until the
[7:42]night but which night the customary night an average night not a
[7:47]night that's so short and it's only 3 hours so they have
[7:52]understood from the Quran and from the hadith that when we have
[8:01]in Islamic law certain specifications or limits those specifications have to be
[8:10]customary I'll give you an example we are required to wash our
[8:14]face envelope now vertically you wash from your hairline down to the
[8:19]chin this is the area that you have to cover vertically what
[8:24]about horizontally across your face so the amount on your saddam states
[8:32]you have to wash that area between your thumb and your middle
[8:35]finger so if you were to put your thumb and middle finger
[8:37]how much would it take from your face you have to wash
[8:45]that area anything beyond that like all the way to your sideburns
[8:49]or ears you don't have to wash that so the amount is
[8:53]so that makes this very clear in the hadith okay which type
[8:57]of hand are we talking about a very long hand if you
[9:01]have very long fingers maybe you can even reach your ear if
[9:03]you have very short fingers maybe you're just covering half of your
[9:06]face scholars have said the size of the hand should be average
[9:13]that which is customary so if one person seems to have a
[9:16]very very big hand abnormally big hand such that it stretches all
[9:22]the way across your face to your ears you don't have to
[9:24]cover that in width though because now this is not customary or
[9:30]if a person has excessively small hands such that when they do
[9:33]that they're only covering half of their face they still need to
[9:36]wash more up to the point where it's average so they have
[9:41]stated that we take this principle and we apply it to fasting
[9:44]long days as well if the day is unusually long then we
[9:49]defer to a customary day an average day let's say is 14
[9:53]hours you go by that choose a city that has an average
[9:59]day normal day customary date and then you can break your fast
[10:04]according to the length of that day so let's say you choose
[10:13]a city that has a 15 hour day at 7 p.m.
[10:16]you can break your fast the Sun is still is up the
[10:17]Sun is going to set in 4 hours at 11:00 p.m.
[10:22]but because you have an abnormally long day you can defer to
[10:27]another city that has a customary date that has a normal day
[10:34]and you can break your fast according to the length of that
[10:37]day this is their fatwa this is their ruling so those people
[10:44]in the summer months who live in these areas in northern latitudes
[10:48]that experience extremely long days this is one thirty solution one perspective
[10:55]that they have given to their followers by the way one of
[10:59]these scholars has an interesting jurisprudential take on this and this is
[11:05]very interesting when examining this verse in the Holy Quran so the
[11:08]answers continue fasting till night now some people might come and say
[11:16]well when the Sun's up that's not night on what basis are
[11:19]you breaking your fast a lot clearly and the Quran says continue
[11:23]fasting until a night at 7 p.m.
[11:28]the Sun is still high up in the horizon in those areas
[11:31]it's going to set four or five hours later so how do
[11:36]you break your fast is this not a flagrant direct violation of
[11:40]the holy quran so one scholar has an interesting answer here he
[11:44]says in those areas at 9 p.m.
[11:51]they do call it night so if you go to Alaska in
[11:53]the summer the Sun sets let's say at 11:45 p.m.
[11:57]at 9:00 p.m.
[12:00]the Sun stills up it's still right outside you see people getting
[12:05]ready to sleep they even say goodnight to each other they treat
[12:10]9:00 p.m.
[12:11]as if it's 9:00 they go to bed they put their kids
[12:17]to sleep they even pull down the curtains and to block the
[12:21]light so in those societies 9:00 p.m.
[12:24]is night the Sun is still up but people treat it like
[12:31]it's night they even say good night to each other right even
[12:34]though the Sun's up they still say good night so that means
[12:39]in those areas and in those societies their understanding of what a
[12:44]day is what night is is different than the actual Sun the
[12:48]Sun may be setting later but they consider that the nightfall has
[12:52]already said and we are just going to call it a night
[12:56]and we consider it a night so when the Koran says continue
[12:59]fasting till night which night that night which is normal in that
[13:08]given society and in those northern places they do consider it night
[13:13]even before the Sun sets so that's one other jurisprudential suggestion that
[13:19]some scholars have had in any case my dear brothers and sisters
[13:22]you follow your merger and this ruling if your merger states that
[13:27]you have to continue fasting until actual sunset then you have to
[13:32]do so try changing your schedule to see if you can cope
[13:35]with that but if you really cannot cope with that you feel
[13:38]this is going to really harm you you feel you're about to
[13:41]pass out or you feel or your doctor tells you that based
[13:45]on you know your health status you will get dehydrated to an
[13:51]unhealthy point then you can break your fast and you make it
[13:55]up after the month of ramadhan and you don't have to pay
[13:57]any kuffara and if you follow one of those other mirage who
[14:01]say that you can break your fast earlier basically you can defer
[14:05]to the timing of another city so you live in an Alaska
[14:11]but you can go by another city by Denver Chicago Los Angeles
[14:14]mecca Caramella no Jeff any other city in the world that has
[14:21]a normal customary night as they call it you can defer to
[14:26]their timing meaning you go by their length of day so if
[14:29]their length of days 15 hours you fast 15 hours at 7
[14:33]p.m.
[14:34]you break your fast because you've already fasted 15 hours Mia last
[14:38]panel - Allah bless you all keep you strong in this month
[14:43]of Ramadan and may Allah reward you for your fasting was Salam
[14:49]alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
