[0:04]i begin in the name of the almighty god the compassionate the
[0:10]merciful the one who has created everything in utmost perfection and may
[0:14]the peace and blessings of the almighty god be upon his pure
[0:18]and beloved messenger the peak of his creation the symbol of humanity
[0:25]the holy prophet muhammad sallallahu alaihi and his immaculate progeny of the
[0:35]bait peace be upon them especially the leader of our time the
[0:38]awaited savior may allah hasten his reappearance and make us all amongst
[0:46]the sincere and dedicated servants allah subhanahu ta'ala states in the holy
[0:52]quran allah wants ease for you allah does not want to complicate
[1:04]things for you allah does not want difficulty for you when he
[1:08]legislates laws for us in reality when you examine the laws of
[1:12]the religion of islam it does require a commitment to observe them
[1:18]we have to sacrifice that's part of our trial that's why we
[1:23]are here on earth but allah subhanahu wa ta'ala does not burden
[1:28]us with more than that we can bear you read allah will
[1:34]be used when allah speaks about fasting in the holy quran allah
[1:37]subhanahu ta'ala reminds us that he wants ease for us the laws
[1:42]that he's legislated for us are laws that we can handle they
[1:47]benefit us we have to sacrifice they require a commitment but at
[1:49]the end of the day we can handle these laws that allah
[1:55]subhanahu ta'ala has legislated for us now if some of these laws
[2:01]become harmful for us due to a medical condition then yes the
[2:03]religion of islam makes an exception for us that is why if
[2:10]fasting is harmful for us it affects our health it is haram
[2:14]for us to fast i know some sick people some people who
[2:19]are harmed by fasting they insist on fasting no i have to
[2:24]the month of ramadan is here i have to fast allah does
[2:26]not accept that from me because he does not want me to
[2:29]fast and harm my health my health is very important if i
[2:34]fast and knowing that fasting is harmful to my health i'm not
[2:41]worshiping allah i'm actually committing a sin so allah wants ease for
[2:46]us now one of the very important challenges that many people face
[2:50]today and this would be the topic of our discussion tonight and
[2:55]this is impacted by fasting and other islamic obligations is diabetes how
[3:01]do we understand diabetes from the islamic perspective this is a very
[3:07]relevant topic my dear brothers and sisters because today every family pretty
[3:12]much they have someone who struggles with diabetes if you look at
[3:18]the statistics on diabetes it's truly shocking here in the u.s it
[3:23]is estimated that more than 37 million americans they struggle with diabetes
[3:31]that's more than 10 of the population that means anywhere you go
[3:36]if you see 10 people on average one of them has diabetes
[3:40]and when you look at those people who have pre-diabetes they're kind
[3:45]of on the border getting there you know what the figure is
[3:49]that's one third of the american population you're looking at a hundred
[3:57]million americans who basically fall into that category they have pre-diabetes they're
[4:04]on the borderline and so this is a very significant issue health
[4:09]epidemic let's call it that's affecting many of us many people die
[4:15]because of diabetes globally every year it's estimated that one million five
[4:21]hundred thousand people die because of diabetes you know that's three people
[4:27]every minute diabetes is killing three people every minute as i'm speaking
[4:33]to you now every 20 seconds someone's life is being claimed because
[4:38]of diabetes it's the seventh leading cause of death in the united
[4:45]states half a billion people around the world they struggle with diabetes
[4:49]it's something that we must raise awareness about my dear brothers and
[4:53]sisters and let's look at the islamic recommendations to prevent diseases like
[4:58]that but how does diabetes impact fasting and other religious obligations given
[5:07]that this is so common and you probably all know someone who's
[5:11]struggling with this it's very important to be informed about the islamic
[5:14]perspective so the point the first point that i would like to
[5:19]discuss with you briefly is whether people who are diabetic should fast
[5:23]or not according to islamic law there are some people that are
[5:28]under the impression that anyone who has diabetes that's it they shouldn't
[5:32]fast it's going to harm your health you should not fast in
[5:34]the month of ramadan we just give a blanket ruling like that
[5:38]that is not the case there are different types of diabetes there
[5:43]are different degrees of diabetes we cannot say that if you have
[5:49]diabetes that's it you should not fast it depends on your personal
[5:53]medical circumstances for instance people normally people with type 2 diabetes where
[5:59]they take the medication like metformin they don't take insulin most of
[6:05]these people or i could say a lot of these people you
[6:10]know if they're otherwise healthy they can fast they can fast and
[6:14]fasting does not harm their health in fact there are studies done
[6:17]to show that fasting helps these people in controlling their diabetes in
[6:24]regulating their sugar levels their glucose sometimes eating less changing your diet
[6:30]fasting intermittently that helps people with diabetes yes you also have type
[6:38]1 diabetes those people who take insulin these people are at a
[6:44]greater risk when it comes to fasting but even some of them
[6:50]can also fast sometimes if you change when you get your dose
[6:54]you adjust it to your schedule during the month of ramadan the
[6:57]time of sahur the time of future if you adjust the dose
[7:05]properly and it matches your diet and now your lifestyle in the
[7:08]month of ramadan even many people with type 1 diabetes they can
[7:12]actually fast it doesn't necessarily harm everyone who struggles with diabetes some
[7:19]people yes it is harmful for them and sometimes you can try
[7:24]monitor the sugar level try fasting and then throughout the day monitor
[7:28]the sugar level if you see that it's dropping rapidly yes at
[7:32]that point you need to eat something but a lot of people
[7:34]can actually fast and it does not impact them now here's an
[7:39]interesting religious question who decides whether you should fast or not who
[7:46]makes that decision well i can't speak to god directly for him
[7:52]you know to tell me whether i specifically should fast tomorrow or
[7:56]not if i have diabetes right so who makes that determination that
[8:01]you should fast or not it's harmful for you or not is
[8:03]it your mom and dad is it your neighbor is it tick
[8:08]tock is it google is it your family doctor who is it
[8:11]this is a very important question who would be the one family
[8:16]doctor okay in islamic law at the end of the day you
[8:22]are the mukhellah you are the one who is obligated before god
[8:27]right so at the end of the day you yourself have to
[8:31]make that decision however islam wants us to make an informed decision
[8:37]islam commands us to ask the experts do research you are going
[8:44]to make the decision you're obligated before god you're responsible but you
[8:48]have to ask your family doctor you have to ask a number
[8:52]of doctors and when it comes to fasting i would recommend asking
[8:57]several doctors just for you to have a better understanding of uh
[9:01]how your diabetes is impacted by fasting do research ask an endocrinologist
[9:07]right maybe an endocrinologist knows more about that than your family doctor
[9:13]ask a doctor who specializes in diabetes do your research and then
[9:17]if you feel that it's safe for you between you and allah
[9:23]after consulting the experts try fasting if everything goes well continue fasting
[9:26]may allah reward you for that if you see that it's really
[9:30]impacting you you stop fasting so at the end of the day
[9:34]you make that call but you have to make an informed decision
[9:36]i know some people they come up with their own opinions i
[9:41]see a person who has a medical condition he wants to fast
[9:44]and i tell him on what basis are you fasting no no
[9:48]i feel i'm good i'm like no that doesn't fly with allah
[9:50]subhanahu ta'ala what do you mean i feel i'm good what does
[9:54]your doctor say what do other doctors say what does research say
[9:57]you have to consult the experts so once you've done your research
[10:03]and you feel confident that fasting is okay for you you can
[10:09]fast this is the first aspect of diabetes the second aspect is
[10:13]russell and purity there are people with type 1 diabetes who have
[10:21]to have these cgm monitors these continuous glucose monitoring systems to check
[10:28]their sugar right sometimes these people are sleeping it can drop rapidly
[10:33]or during the day and it could really harm them now the
[10:37]challenge is some of these monitors have to be attached for a
[10:41]good 10 days for a good two weeks and there's a very
[10:46]small needle that goes into the skin so when you do husul
[10:50]how do you do hussor when you have that object on your
[10:52]body our scholars and maraju have two understandings here the first more
[11:01]common understanding of maraju is that this is to be treated like
[11:06]a wound and therefore you do if you had a wound on
[11:13]your arm let's say on your upper arm there was a wound
[11:16]how would you do if it's an open wound right not a
[11:18]wound that has healed you basically put a bandaid on it you
[11:22]cover it with a piece of cloth and then that part you'd
[11:26]wipe on it you don't wash it because sometimes washing the wound
[11:31]can actually harm you so these scholars have said these monitors that
[11:35]are attached to the body through that needle that is basically like
[11:40]a wound it's a small needle sure you don't really see blood
[11:47]coming out but it is like a wound so you do the
[11:48]of jabira that part you basically wipe if the water cannot reach
[11:54]the device or you just cover it with a plastic bag and
[11:56]you do your hustle this is the first understanding the second understanding
[12:03]of samara they say no we don't see this as a wound
[12:08]this is technically not a wound it's a small little needle that
[12:11]looks like a hair right that goes into your body it's not
[12:14]an active wound blood is not coming out therefore in this case
[12:20]you have to do tiam moon is basically when you do the
[12:27]abolution with you know with the earth with dust with sand with
[12:30]anything that's from the earth you cannot do russell because this is
[12:37]a barrier if there's a barrier on your body you cannot do
[12:40]russell you have to do ta'amu let's say you have a person
[12:45]who's a painter right they got a lot of pain on their
[12:46]body and they don't have time to remove it what do they
[12:50]do in that case they cannot do because there is a barrier
[12:55]preventing water from reaching the skin in that case what they have
[12:59]to do is to do tayammum so this second group of scholars
[13:01]they say this cgm monitor for those people with diabetes this is
[13:06]actually a barrier and therefore they have to do tayamu i'll give
[13:12]you my recommendation my recommendation to those who have these monitors and
[13:15]i know a lot of people in the community who do my
[13:19]recommendation i know you'd like me to make things easier for you
[13:24]but believe me this is for the best my recommendation for you
[13:27]is to do the rusul and then after it do tayammo i'll
[13:30]tell you why because maybe right now you follow a merger who
[13:35]tells you do the russo tomorrow you know maybe your major passes
[13:39]away later you're going to follow someone else who's going to tell
[13:43]you no in that case you had to do tayammum and sometimes
[13:47]you could be in a situation where you have to redo your
[13:50]prayers and that's the last thing that you want done right that's
[13:54]why my recommendation is do the and then do it does not
[13:59]take more than 10 seconds it literally does not take more than
[14:03]10 seconds after you step out of the shower just do a
[14:06]quick tam you can see some videos on youtube that show you
[14:08]and demonstrate to you how to do taiyamu so that is my
[14:13]recommendation for those people who have to keep these monitors on their
[14:16]bodies for long do both that way you know for a fact
[14:19]you're on tahara and you're fulfilling your obligation and your sarah is
[14:27]valid by the way when you prick your hand many people have
[14:29]a misconception when you prick your hand and the blood comes out
[14:32]a lot of people think their hustle or their wudu gets invalid
[14:36]that's not the case no amount of blood will invalidate your wudu
[14:41]if you bleed you have a wound your will is valid you're
[14:45]still on tahara you just have to wash the blood before you
[14:52]pray and if the size of the blood the amount of the
[14:54]blood is less than a dirham as the hadith states dirham is
[15:00]basically the fingernail of your thumb your thumbnail right the size of
[15:04]your thumbnail if it's less than that you can pray with it
[15:06]you don't even need to wash it if it's more than that
[15:10]it invalidates the prayer so if you prick your hand your will
[15:15]is still valid i know many people who redo their wudu i
[15:17]tell them why did you have to do the law again it's
[15:20]must have to always do they will do but why it's like
[15:21]well my buddha became invalid no that's not the case blood leaving
[15:27]your body does not invalidate the wudu so that is something for
[15:31]them to consider my dear brothers and sisters my word of comfort
[15:37]for those who struggle with diabetes because i've seen some of them
[15:43]they really go through depression right they really have a hard time
[15:48]realize that this dunya is a trial and every single day that
[15:52]you struggle with this autoimmune disease remind yourself that i was not
[15:58]created for this world these diseases remind us believe me they're a
[16:03]gift from allah sometimes they remind us that we have a better
[16:09]place waiting for us don't waste your life on this world on
[16:13]materialism having your full hopes in this dunya violating others cheating others
[16:18]making haram money sinning every day just for momentarily momentary pleasure allah
[16:24]was did not create you for this dunya this is just a
[16:27]transit hall and then you leave these diseases are reminders my dear
[16:33]brothers and sisters that allah has a better place for us don't
[16:37]feel safe with dunya and by the way for those of you
[16:42]who are healthy alhamdulillah allah protect your health but always know that
[16:46]a disease can develop any minute never feel safe never say no
[16:51]i'm healthy none of this applies to me alhamdulillah you're healthy now
[16:55]but can you guarantee your health till tomorrow till next year till
[16:58]10 years from now any time i could be tried in this
[17:02]dunya always be ready realize that this is part of your trial
[17:05]in this world never object to allah accept this trial from god
[17:11]and if you have a disease that you're struggling with believe me
[17:15]every single day it's almost like getting free edger from allah even
[17:20]if you're not doing anything if you're just thankful to allah in
[17:25]your heart you say oh allah i accept this trial i don't
[17:29]object i will be patient you will get massive massive rewards for
[17:33]that disease such that the hadith states on the day of judgment
[17:39]when a believer sees how much edger and reward allah gave him
[17:43]for sleeping one night sick one night through fever and we know
[17:49]that you know having a fever is not the end of the
[17:51]world right there are much more serious conditions we can handle sleeping
[17:56]one night with fever when you see how much reward allah gave
[18:00]you for sleeping one night with fever the believer will wish on
[18:07]the day of judgment he was sick his entire life when he
[18:10]sees the rahma the mercy of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala so if
[18:14]you know people who are struggling with chronic illnesses comfort them give
[18:18]them patience assure them that allah subhanahu ta'ala will reward them allah
[18:25]subhanahu ta'ala will compensate them now the final point about diabetes and
[18:29]many of the illnesses that we experience my dear brothers and sisters
[18:34]the main cause of diabetes and a lot of the illnesses that
[18:40]we have in our society today is what what is it obesity
[18:43]and that's caused by what our diet over indulgence we live in
[18:49]a society that's very indulgent in foods my dear brothers and sisters
[18:54]and one hadith the holy prophet muhammad sallallahu alaihi allah allah muhammad
[19:01]muhammad you know what the prophet says the prophet tells you what
[19:05]the source of all disease is the prophet states al-mardatub your stomach
[19:13]what you put in your stomach is the house of all diseases
[19:24]and prevention avoiding all these harmful foods is the master of medications
[19:30]you want the best medication don't eat these harmful foods it requires
[19:38]patience we cannot do it right but listen to amir al mu'min
[19:44]he states if you don't have the patience to say no to
[19:52]your urges and desires when it comes to food your disease will
[19:59]be prolonged you're going to live a lifelong challenge of dealing with
[20:05]an illness with a disease and that's why the imam ali salaam
[20:10]in another hadith don't eat that food which is harmful allah has
[20:17]not authorized you to harm this body imam says don't give preference
[20:27]to your desire over the health of your body the leading cause
[20:30]of most of these illnesses is our food my dear brothers and
[20:33]sisters and the message of the month of ramadan is control your
[20:38]diet we live in a society where we are bombarded by advertisements
[20:42]long isles at the supermarkets that are just enticing us to eat
[20:47]more and more and more sometimes i go through these supermarkets these
[20:52]huge ones right and then you look at the aisle believe me
[20:56]for as much as your eyes can see you see an ocean
[21:02]of junk food an ocean of cookies 50 companies making different types
[21:05]of cookies and then the chips and then the you know soda
[21:11]the drinks it doesn't end and we can't resist it we can't
[21:17]resist it there are people who are starving on earth every single
[21:20]day 30 000 kids die from starving from starvation from malnutrition and
[21:28]we have all this excess money to buy harmful foods the religion
[21:32]of islam tells you prevention is the best cure develop that will
[21:39]power to say no that's what ramadan is all about unfortunately in
[21:43]most communities around the world especially you know in in many muslim
[21:47]countries ramadan is the exact opposite ramadan becomes the month of indulgence
[21:53]you eat sweets in the month of ramadan you never dream of
[21:57]them outside of ramadan i'm not criticizing those people they are my
[22:03]brothers and sisters in faith but honestly is this the purpose of
[22:09]ramadan yes islam recommends us gather together break your fast together do
[22:13]you know what the reward is to offer a meal to someone
[22:16]to break their fast it's an amazing amount of reward in the
[22:19]eyes of allah but over indulgence sometimes i see some house invitations
[22:26]right especially you know some countries that i'm referring to you go
[22:32]there you see 50 types of sweets on the table honestly that
[22:35]defeats the purpose of ramadan you think rasulullah on the last night
[22:45]before the imam was struck you know what if thought of the
[22:51]imam was his daughter lady um according to one hadith she brought
[22:54]him the iftar that last night she brought him bread barley bread
[23:00]bread made from barley some salt and some milk would you have
[23:06]that for year of thought i'm sure most of us would not
[23:09]accept this as an iftad if someone gives you that you take
[23:12]that as an insult but this was the iflat of the imam
[23:16]the imam looked at her it's it seemed the imam objected to
[23:21]her through his facial expression she told him did i do something
[23:26]wrong what what is it that i did wrong the imam alaihi
[23:30]salaam told his daughter um when have you seen your father eat
[23:34]several types of food allahu akbar the imam calls that several types
[23:40]of food and he just has milk bread and salt can you
[23:45]believe that she says i wanted to take the salt so he
[23:47]can drink the milk the imam said no take the milk i'll
[23:54]just break my fast on bread and salt i know we cannot
[23:59]be like i know the imam says who can live like amir
[24:04]and mu'min but at least we can try let's educate ourselves my
[24:09]dear brothers and sisters on the concept and the country on the
[24:13]culture of prevention not to bring disease to ourselves let's make it
[24:18]a policy in our households we don't regularly eat junk food okay
[24:23]you want to eat it once in a while fine no problem
[24:26]if it's if something is hard take it but to have this
[24:31]regularly every single day that's why we have all these diseases that
[24:35]is one leading cause for diabetes a lot of that can be
[24:41]avoided through prevention and the best month to exercise that is the
[24:45]month of ramadan that's the whole purpose behind this month and then
[24:49]you know what imam ali alayhi salaam told his daughter um after
[24:53]he said have you seen your father eat multiple types of foods
[24:57]he told her do you want my standing on the day of
[24:59]judgment before allah to be long what does this mean my dear
[25:06]brothers and sisters very briefly what does this mean i'll give you
[25:08]my analysis see if you eat something that's halal and you bought
[25:12]it with halal money it's not a sin allah is not going
[25:14]to punish you for that but we have hadiths that if you
[25:18]over indulge on the day of judgment that hisab that reckoning will
[25:23]be prolonged instead of quickly going through sarat and getting to heaven
[25:27]you will be stopped there will be delays you'll have to stand
[25:31]in line why is that the case my dear brothers and sisters
[25:35]i'll tell you what the analysis is when we over indulge when
[25:40]it comes to these foods and desires spiritually you weaken yourself you
[25:46]become more materialistic you allow your animalistic desires to influence you you
[25:51]become less spiritual and less productive so on the day of judgment
[25:58]allah will hold you accountable allah will tell you why were you
[26:01]less productive i gave you all the tools for success why were
[26:06]you not so spiritual let's see why let's inspect why and then
[26:10]your file is opened and you'll discover that the reason was all
[26:13]this overindulges even if it's halal but when you over indulge in
[26:19]something it weakens your spirituality and it distracts you from allah subhanahu
[26:22]ta'ala allah will tell you see that's why you did not pass
[26:28]the test the way you should have it was because of all
[26:32]that over indulgence that will delay us on the day of judgment
[26:36]so the month of ramadan is the best month for prevention my
[26:42]dear brothers and sisters for prevention for a healthy lifestyle for positive
[26:46]exercise you know how much islam recommends walking people who are pre-diabetic
[26:54]one of the best things that they can do is to walk
[26:56]to exercise the hadith from the prophet sallallahu alaihi in speaking about
[27:02]walking the prophet states never what do you have something better than
[27:12]walking in order to give yourself proper medication the prophet says walking
[27:19]is medicine for you and that's a beautiful hadith from the prophet
[27:23]sallallahu alaihi we ask allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to give us the
[27:28]success in this blessed month of ramadan to truly find that will
[27:33]power to say no to our temptations to our desires we ask
[27:38]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to protect us and our families from all
[27:42]these illnesses and all those who are struggling with these illnesses we
[27:46]ask allah subhanahu wa ta'ala to give them the patience to cope
[27:49]with these illnesses and to grant them a speedy recovery inshaallah wasallallahu
[27:55]alaikum
