[3:12]The greatest journey that has inspired us is the journey of Alm
[3:21]Hussein.
[3:19]From Medina to Mecca to Kbala.
[3:26]This is the journey that has transformed us.
[3:31]This is the journey that has inspired millions of people throughout history.
[3:40]For many of us, we are familiar with the journey of Al
[3:48]Hussein.
[3:48]In Karbala when he arrived Karbala, what happened on the 10th of
[3:56]Muaram, the day of the events that unfolded?
[4:01]Many of us are familiar with those details.
[4:04]But what are the details of Imam Hussein's journey before Kbala?
[4:10]How did I im Hussein leave the city of Medina?
[4:14]Under what circumstances?
[4:18]Where did he go?
[4:19]Because we know that it took about six months from the day
[4:25]that Yazid came to power and he imposed himself on the Muslim
[4:29]Ummah until the day of Ash.
[4:34]What happened during those five or six months?
[4:38]Where did I im Hussein spend most of his time when he
[4:44]left the city of Medina?
[4:45]Therefore, tonight I will share with you some inspiring details from the
[4:56]journey of Alm Hussein from Medina to Mecca.
[5:00]How did the Imam leave his hometown, the city of Sai?
[5:05]Where did he go after that?
[5:09]Where did he spend several months before going to Kbal?
[5:14]Alm Hussein lived in the city of Medina that was his hometown
[5:21]and in and when his brother Al Hassan was martyed he received
[5:28]many letters from Iraq asking him to go and be their leader.
[5:31]Oh Imam, come we're waiting for you.
[5:34]We will stand behind you.
[5:38]Let's fight Muawi.
[5:39]Muawi at the time he was still ruling.
[5:42]Imam Hussein refused.
[5:45]He said, "No, my brother Al Hassan made a peace treaty with
[5:51]Muawi and I will respect that peace treaty.
[5:55]I'm not going to violate it.
[5:57]So for now, I have no intention of rising.
[6:02]However, if Muawia dies, I can reassess.
[6:05]So we come now to the year 60 in the Hijri calendar.
[6:10]We come to the month of Raj.
[6:17]In the month of Rajab, year 60, Muawia dies, the news reaches
[6:21]Medina that Muawia died and he has installed his son Yazid as
[6:25]the next ruler, the next Khalifa.
[6:30]Yazid sends a letter to his governor in Medina.
[6:34]Who was the governor in Medina at the time?
[6:39]Alwb Abu Sufyan, the grandson of Abu Sufyan.
[6:42]So you had a member of the Umayad family.
[6:45]He was Yazid's cousin.
[6:49]He was ruling Medina.
[6:49]Yazid sends him a letter.
[6:51]He tells him, "I want you to summon Hussein and you have
[6:56]to force him to give me allegiance.
[6:58]Don't let him slip.
[6:59]Make sure you secure the allegiance, the bay from Hussein." So Alw
[7:07]he summons Imam Hussein.
[7:10]Salam to his palace, the palace of the governor.
[7:13]The Imam tells him, "What do you want from me?" He tells
[7:18]him, "As you know, as you've heard, Muawia died and now the
[7:22]ruler, the Khalifa is Yazid, his son, and I have direct orders
[7:29]from the Khalifa to secure your allegiance." So here I want you
[7:34]now to give your to Yazid Muawi.
[7:37]What was the response of Imam Hussein?
[7:40]The Imam Alisam said his famous words, his famous statement.
[7:47]He told him, "Do you know who I represent?
[7:58]Do you know from which household I come?
[8:02]We come from the the source of prophethood.
[8:03]The angels visit our homes.
[8:16]Yazid is a despicable man.
[8:20]He openly commits sins.
[8:22]He's a drunkard.
[8:25]He kills innocent souls.
[8:27][Music] And someone like me shall never give allegiance to someone like
[8:37]Yazid.
[8:38]I refuse.
[8:38]He tries to pressure Im Hussein into giving allegiance.
[8:43]But the Imam Alisam utterly refuses.
[8:46]He leaves the house of the governor, the palace of the governor.
[8:52]And the Imam realizes that he cannot stay in Medina.
[8:54]If I stay in Medina, they will try to force me to
[8:58]give bay to Yazid.
[9:00]I have to leave now.
[9:00]So the Imam gathers his family, Zab and the woman and the
[9:05]children.
[9:06]We have to start our journey now.
[9:09]So the journey of Kbalah starts in the month of Rajab in
[9:16]the city of Medina specifically on the 27th of Rajab which is
[9:21]a very significant day.
[9:23]If you dissect the journey of Imam Hussein and the dates surrounding
[9:31]this journey, you will find that even the dates are significant.
[9:35]Do you know what the 27th of Rajab is in our Islamic
[9:39]calendar?
[9:39]Why is this date significant?
[9:42]It's the it marks the day the prophet sallallahu alaihi wasall officially
[9:47]received revelation in the cave of when the Quran was revealed for
[9:54]the first time that occurred on the 27th of and so subhan
[10:00]Allah by choosing that day it's as if Im Hussein is telling
[10:07]the world on this day Quran was revealed Islam was given to
[10:12]us from Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala and on this day this Islam
[10:17]has to be saved.
[10:20]So the Imam gathers his family.
[10:24]He goes to the grave of his grandfather.
[10:25]He farewells the grave of his grandfather.
[10:28]He asks Allahhana tala for protection, for guidance.
[10:33]And on the 27th of Rajab, he leaves the city of Medina.
[10:38]As the Imam Alisam was leaving the city of Medina, he made
[10:44]a very famous statement.
[10:46]Many of you have heard the statement, but that's when he made
[10:51]it.
[10:52]As he was leaving the city of Medina, the Imam said, "I'm
[11:02]not rising as someone who's bringing corruption or injustice, someone who's disrupting
[11:09]society." No, that's not my intention.
[11:13]That's not my goal.
[11:12]So, what is your goal?
[11:21]I am rising to seek reform in the nation of my grandfather.
[11:28]I want to enjoin the good, forbid the evil.
[11:31]I want to defend the oppressed, secure their rights.
[11:35]I want to fight injustice and oppression.
[11:44]All I want to do is continue the path of my grandfather
[11:49]and my father Ali.
[11:51]So he officially leaves the city of Medina and he heads south
[11:56]to the city of Mecca.
[11:59]He's now with the woman, the children.
[12:01]He takes all of them.
[12:05]The journey from Medina to Mecca takes about five or six days.
[12:09]It's a 300mile journey and according to reports the Imam arrives the
[12:16]city of Mecca on the 3rd of Shaan which is also another
[12:23]significant date.
[12:23]What's the third of Shaan?
[12:25]That's the birth of Alm Hussein Alisam.
[12:28]That was his birthday.
[12:30]So he arrives the city of Mecca on his birthday.
[12:34]Look at the significance behind all of these dates in the journey
[12:38]of Imam Hussein.
[12:41]One report tells us when the Imam approached the city of Mecca
[12:46]and he saw the mountains of Mecca, the Imam recited verse 22
[12:51]of he coded a verse from the tongue of prophet Musam.
[13:08]Prophet Musa Alisam when confronted with the pharaoh in Egypt he had
[13:15]to flee.
[13:16]He left Egypt and he was heading towards Median the city of
[13:22]Prophet Shisam.
[13:22]Musa had to save his life because they wanted to kill him.
[13:28]So what did Musa say?
[13:28]He said, "Oh Allah, I ask you to guide me to the
[13:35]straight path.
[13:36]Oh Allah, you help me in confronting the tyrant of my time,
[13:41]the pharaoh.
[13:40]Imam Hussein quotes this verse.
[13:45]This is significant because Imam Hussein is going through a similar experience
[13:52]over here.
[13:51]Mus stood against the tyrant of his time.
[13:55]Imam Hussein stood against the tyrant of his time as well.
[14:01]Yazid Muawi.
[14:00]It gets more interesting than that.
[14:02]Prophet Musa Alisam he knew that Allah would help him but he
[14:07]didn't know how.
[14:10]He had no army to confront the pharaoh.
[14:13]He was the most powerful ruler at the time.
[14:16]You Musa, you have no one with you.
[14:18]How are you going to bring him down?
[14:22]MS said, "Oh Allah, I rely on you.
[14:26]I know that you will find a way out for me." And
[14:28]subhan Allah, we see the miracle in the story of prophet Musa
[14:31]Alisam when he goes back to Egypt and he shows the pharaoh
[14:37]all those signs.
[14:39]He rejects every sign and he chases MS and his people to
[14:42]kill them.
[14:44]They reach a dead end.
[14:45]They reach the sea.
[14:46]Imagine the sea is in front of you.
[14:50]You're with your people.
[14:52]The tyrant with a massive army is chasing you from behind.
[14:55]Where do you go?
[15:00]The companions of Prophet Musa Alisam told him, "It's over for us.
[15:05]Game over.
[15:04]We're dead meat right now.
[15:08]The Pharaoh is behind us, a massive army.
[15:10]The sea is before us.
[15:11]There is no way we can escape.
[15:12]What did you do to us?
[15:15]Did you not promise us that Allah subhana wa ta'ala is going
[15:18]to help us?
[15:20]He's going to save us.
[15:20]What happened?" MS told them, "No, the Pharaoh cannot reach us." How?
[15:26]Tell us, are we going to fly?
[15:27]Is the earth going to swallow us?
[15:31]I don't know.
[15:31]But I know that Allah is with me.
[15:36]Allah is with me.
[15:38]He'll find a path.
[15:38]He's promised.
[15:40]And when they lost hope and they were doubting the power of
[15:45]God, that's when Allah split the sea open for them and he
[15:47]saved MS and he destroyed.
[15:50]Imam Hussein is coding this verse.
[15:55]Yes, Yazid is cornering me.
[15:59]He's trying to destroy Islam, but Allah will find a way to
[16:03]save this religion.
[16:04]And this is a beautiful verse for us to always reflect on.
[16:09]Whenever you're about to embark on a difficult journey, a difficult task,
[16:13]you have to make a very important life choice.
[16:18]It could be marriage, it could be choosing your career, it could
[16:23]be anything.
[16:23]As long as you are obeying Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala, you're on
[16:29]the path of Allah subhana ta.
[16:31]Leave the outcome with God.
[16:32]The beauty of dealing with God is that you don't have to
[16:39]decide the outcome.
[16:38]You just put in the effort.
[16:41]The outcome is with Allah subhana t.
[16:43]He'll find a way out.
[16:47]He has promised, "I will find a way out for you." You
[16:49]don't need to worry about that.
[16:53]Don't stress over that.
[16:54]Don't lose sleep over a way out.
[16:57]As long as you're sincere, you're putting in the required effort, leave
[17:01]the rest with Allah.
[17:05]He'll work in mysterious ways to eternalize you and to give you
[17:08]a legacy and to make you successful.
[17:11]Yes, sometimes we fail because of laziness, because of mistakes.
[17:18]We are held accountable for that.
[17:22]But sometimes you honestly do what any responsible person would do.
[17:27]You're doing your part.
[17:27]Still not working.
[17:28]You tried your best to keep that job position.
[17:31]You still got fired.
[17:34]It's okay at that point.
[17:35]Smile.
[17:36]Sometimes when there's nothing you can do about it.
[17:38]You've done what you were able to do, but it didn't work.
[17:43]Just sit back and relax and realize Allahh is fully in charge.
[17:48]Allahh will decide the outcome for you.
[17:51]So Imam Hussein recites this verse as he enters the city of
[17:59]Mecca.
[17:57]Now there's an important question here.
[18:00]Why did I im Hussein choose Mecca out of all cities?
[18:04]Yazid is chasing him.
[18:08]He's getting cornered.
[18:07]There is a lot of pressure on him to give to Yazid.
[18:12]Why go to the city of Mecca?
[18:13]Now some of you will say, well obviously the city of Mecca
[18:15]has the Kaa.
[18:18]It's a holy city.
[18:18]That would be a good choice.
[18:21]Well, if you go back during the time of Imam Hussein, Mecca
[18:27]was actually a very hostile city to the family of B.
[18:33]Mecca was the stronghold of Quraysh.
[18:36]The Quraysh were comprised of 25 tribes.
[18:41]One of those tribes is the Benihashim, the prophet's tribe.
[18:44]But you had 24 other tribes.
[18:46]Those 24 other tribes, they hated the prophet and his family.
[18:54]They despised Ali Abbisam because they realized that their big men, their
[18:59]warriors were killed at the hands of Imam.
[19:02]They did not like the B.
[19:04]The the B had very little supporters in Mecca.
[19:07]And that's such a depressing sad reality.
[19:12]It got so bad.
[19:16]This is going to shock you.
[19:15]It got so bad during the time of IM the Sunni scholar
[19:24]in his commentary on he says im said the following in his
[19:31]era.
[19:32]He says, "According to this report, Imam Zadin said in all of
[19:47]Mecca and Medina at the time, there aren't 20 men who love
[19:51]us." Can you imagine?
[19:55]And the Quran asked one thing from this ummah.
[19:58]The prophet when they asked him how can we compensate you he
[20:06]asked for one thing by the instruction of God I ask you
[20:12]for no wage except to love my family says in Mecca there
[20:17]aren't 20 men who love us that's the result of the omead
[20:20]propaganda all the hatred that they harbored against the prophet's family for
[20:25]standing up to the truth there are times when you stand up
[20:29]to the truth with you will be abandoned.
[20:31]People around you at work, you get get you can get fired.
[20:35]You will not reach top positions.
[20:37]That's that happens.
[20:37]That's part of life.
[20:39]It's costly to be with the truth.
[20:42]But the truth is very valuable.
[20:43]If at times you feel lonely because of that, just remember the
[20:47]statement of imbin.
[20:51]So then if I im Hussein didn't have that many supporters in
[20:56]Mecca, why did he go to Mecca when he left Medina?
[21:00]The primary reason is because now people were coming from all over
[21:07]the Muslim world to Mecca for the Hajj season.
[21:09]Because starting in the month of Rajab and then Shaan, Ramadan, these
[21:15]are the Hajj months.
[21:16]Back then it took people months and weeks to travel to get
[21:22]to Mecca.
[21:20]So the Imam Alisam wanted to meet Muslims from all around the
[21:28]Muslim ummah to let them know that he has refused to pledge
[21:32]allegiance to Yazid.
[21:34]He wanted to broadcast his revolution to the world.
[21:41]He wanted to show Muslims that he's standing up against the oppressors.
[21:45]He wants to defend the rights of the oppressed.
[21:48]And this was the perfect opportunity in Mecca to do that.
[21:51]Many people had gathered in Mecca for the Hajj season.
[21:53]So the Imam took advantage of that opportunity.
[21:55]This is why he chose the city of Mecca.
[22:00]So the Imam Alisam goes to the city city of Mecca.
[22:03]Where does he stay in the city of Mecca?
[22:05]Because IM Hussein didn't have a house in Mecca.
[22:08]Im Ali Alisam did not have a house in Mecca.
[22:11]According to a Sunni scholar, he says, "Im Hussein Alisam when he
[22:18]went to Mecca, he stayed in the house of his great uncle
[22:21]Al Abbas." Al Abbas Ib Abdalib, the uncle of the prophet sallallahu
[22:26]alaihi.
[22:27]He had a house in Mecca.
[22:29]And so, Imam Hussein went to his house and he stayed there.
[22:35]Imm Hussein now settles in Mecca.
[22:40]All eyes are on him.
[22:41]There were two people who were disturbed by that.
[22:45]Two groups.
[22:44]One of them obviously the omeads.
[22:46]They're like, "Oh, he's left Medina.
[22:50]Now he's in Mecca.
[22:50]It's difficult to fight him in Mecca.
[22:52]There are all these Muslims coming from around the world.
[22:55]It's the Hajj season.
[22:58]It's much more difficult to confront him." So the Omeayads were really
[23:02]disappointed, were really upset that Im Hussein found his way to Mecca.
[23:08]There was another group, another person who was upset because Imam Hussein
[23:16]went to Mecca.
[23:16]Who is that person?
[23:19]That is Abdullahn Zuber.
[23:20]The second cousin of Imam Hussein.
[23:23]You know what?
[23:27]Zuber as Zuber was a warrior who defended the prophet and Im
[23:30]Ali peace be upon them.
[23:31]But then he had a son by the name of Abdullah.
[23:35]When Abdullah started to grow up, he destroyed his father's religion.
[23:41]He started whispering evil thoughts into the head of his father.
[23:49]He told his father, "Why is Ali the kaiff now?
[23:52]You're better than Ali?
[23:55]What does he have that you don't have?" He instigated his father
[23:59]as Zuber to go and side with Aisha at the battle of
[24:06]J to fight Ali.
[24:06]And subhan Allah im Ali he made a very disappointing statement here
[24:16]about the im says the im says was one of us.
[24:27]He was always there willing to defend us until his wretched son
[24:34]Abdullah grew up.
[24:35]And this is a lesson for us my dear brothers and sisters.
[24:38]Inshallah all of you here, alhamdulillah, you have good families and good
[24:42]children.
[24:43]But one of your trials in life is that when you grow
[24:45]older and your children are growing older, sometimes your children pressure you
[24:50]to compromise your values, to make wrong decisions.
[24:54]Beware.
[24:55]That's one of your tests in life.
[24:58]In fact, the Holy Quran has a very powerful verse here.
[25:03]Not sure if some of us can handle that.
[25:06]In one verse, Allahh states, "Beware some of your family members can
[25:13]be your own enemies who are destroying your faith and spirituality.
[25:17]Don't let that happen." Because many times we love our children.
[25:20]We give them the benefit of the doubt.
[25:23]We allow them to have a big sway over us.
[25:27]They influence us.
[25:27]That's what happened to Zuber.
[25:30]So his son Abdullah he despised the B.
[25:35]He was very uncomfortable that Imam Hussein Alisam had come to Mecca
[25:40]and he had taken Mecca as his base to fight Yazid.
[25:46]Now Abdullahb Zuber he was fighting Yazid but for personal reasons.
[25:49]He wanted to be the ruler.
[25:51]He wanted to be the Khalifa.
[25:54]When Imam Hussein came to Mecca, he took the spotlight from him
[25:58]and that bothered him.
[26:00]But the Imam Alisam comes to the city of Mecca.
[26:04]And now the imam prepares for the journey of Kbal from Mecca.
[26:11]Among the important activities that Imam Hussein does is that he sends
[26:19]a letter to the people of Basra.
[26:21]At the time, Iraq had two main cities, Kufa and Basra.
[26:24]The Imam Alisam sends them a letter with one of his companions
[26:30]by the name of M Hussein or Ibus.
[26:34]The Imam tells him, "Take my letter to the people of Basra.
[26:39]They're not ready to support me.
[26:43]Perhaps maybe they can read my letter and they can stand up
[26:45]to the tyrants of their time." So the imam sends them a
[26:50]letter and he tells them look the sunnah of the prophet has
[26:53]been killed and look at all these innovations and bas and I
[26:59]am your imv inviting you to support me.
[27:02]Now who was the governor of Basra at the time?
[27:04]Iben Zad.
[27:06]You've heard of Ib Zad before he went to Kufa.
[27:11]He was based in Basra.
[27:11]He was the governor in Basra.
[27:15]So the Imam was telling them don't support your evil governor.
[27:18]All you have to do is stop him and we can go
[27:22]to Kufa.
[27:23]We can establish justice on earth.
[27:24]What happened to Sulman?
[27:27]The messenger of Imam Hussein.
[27:29]Imam Hussein Alisam sends Sulman.
[27:33]They capture him.
[27:33]They take him to Ib Zad with the letter.
[27:37]Ib Zad immediately has him assassinated in cold blood.
[27:40]And therefore is the first Shahid on the journey to Kbalah.
[27:48]If you were to ask who's the first martyr who was killed
[27:51]in the way of defending Im Hussein, it is Ibus even before
[28:00]Muslimb.
[27:58]And on this night we pay tribute to this great warrior who
[28:04]risked his life for the sake of Islam, for the sake of
[28:10]Imam Hussein.
[28:11]So no one from Basra really at that time was willing to
[28:16]show any support to Imam Hussein.
[28:17]But Kufa was a different story.
[28:20]When Imam Hussein was in Mecca, every single day he would receive
[28:28]600 letters from Kufins.
[28:28]600 letters every single day.
[28:30]Can you imagine?
[28:32]Oh, I imam come to us.
[28:33]We're waiting for you.
[28:35]We have hundreds of thousands of people willing to support you.
[28:38]All you need to do is come.
[28:40]Please come.
[28:41]So, I im Hussein when he sees the people of Kufa begging
[28:47]him to go, he writes them a letter with his cousin Muslim.
[28:52]He tells him, Muslim, I want you to go to Kufa.
[28:53]Take my letter and tell them, okay, come and give allegiance and
[28:59]I will I shall come.
[29:00]So, the Imam Alisam dispatches Muslimb to go to Kufa.
[29:05]He leaves on the 15th of the month of Ramadan.
[29:09]20 days later, on the 5th of Shaw, he reaches the land
[29:15]of Kufa.
[29:17]He sees tens of thousands of people gathering in Kufa, welcoming Muslimb.
[29:22]Oh, you are the ambassador of Hussein.
[29:25]We are waiting for Hussein.
[29:28]Where is he?
[29:27]Why doesn't he come?
[29:30]He told them, I represent him now.
[29:33]Give me your allegiance.
[29:34]Let's unite.
[29:35]Once I see that you've all united and you're willing to support
[29:39]Imm Hussein, I will ask him to come.
[29:43]When Muslim sees this overwhelming show of support, he writes a letter
[29:51]to Imam Hussein.
[29:50]He tells him, "Imam, I have 18,000 people who pledged me allegiance.
[29:56]They're waiting for you in Kufa.
[30:00]Come.
[29:58]The timing is ripe." But you know, subhan Allah, Imm Hussein was
[30:05]not deceived by any of this.
[30:09]He knew the fate that awaited for him.
[30:11]You know why?
[30:11]Because when I im Hussein dispatched Muslimb, he told him, "Go to
[30:18]Kufa and see if they're willing to support us.
[30:22]However, I ask Allah to give you and me the status of
[30:25]Shahada and Martin." In other words, Imam Hussein was telling Muslim, Muslim,
[30:30]don't look at the numbers, they will betray us and our end
[30:34]is martyrdom and shahad.
[30:37]But Muslim, he saw 18,000 people giving him allegiance.
[30:39]That's a big number for them to physically come and put their
[30:44]hand in his hand.
[30:45]So when Imam Hussein received the letter of Muslim, he realized that
[30:52]now it's his obligation to go to Kufa because if he would
[30:55]not go, they would say, "Oh, we told Hussein to come and
[30:59]save us from Yazid and the corruption of Yazid." But he refused.
[31:02]They would have blamed everything on Imam Hussein.
[31:06]So Imam Hussein had no choice but to go to Kufa.
[31:08]So the Imam was determined to find the right timing to leave
[31:13]Mecca and to go to Iraq.
[31:16]Now while Imam Hussein was Mecca, he issued many very important speeches
[31:23]and in the speeches of Imam Hussein you see the Imam Alisam
[31:30]giving beautiful advice to the people.
[31:31]All these Muslims who had gathered there for the Hajj season.
[31:35]History has documented two of Imam Hussein's speeches in Mecca.
[31:40]And I would like to share with you snippets from the speeches
[31:43]of Imam Hussein to be inspired by his words of wisdom to
[31:50]see how the imam even in difficult times he always reminded people
[31:54]of their destination of their obligations always giving them beautiful good advice.
[32:00]In the first speech of Im Hussein, he said the following beautiful
[32:07]words of wisdom from your Im.
[32:09]After praising Allah subhana wa ta'ala and thanking God, the imam states,
[32:23]the Imam states, death surrounds the neck of the human being.
[32:33]Death surrounds the children of Adam just like a necklace surrounds the
[32:37]neck of a girl.
[32:40]Very interesting description from Imam Hussein Alisam.
[32:44]Why would he describe death as a beautiful necklace around the neck
[32:49]of a girl?
[32:51]Why?
[32:51]What's the wisdom behind this description?
[32:53]First of all, by using this description, the Imam is telling you,
[32:57]look, there is no escape from death.
[33:01]Death is something that awaits us all.
[33:03]There's no escape from it.
[33:07]Just like a necklace surrounds you, your neck, you are surrounded by
[33:11]death.
[33:12]There is no escape.
[33:12]It's a vivid example that he was giving to his listeners.
[33:17]Secondly, a necklace is beautiful, right?
[33:20]It's an adornment.
[33:23]It beautifies the person who's wearing it.
[33:26]And so the Immiam is communicating to us if you are a
[33:29]believer on the path of God, death beautifies you.
[33:33]Death is a beautiful ending.
[33:35]If you're on the path of God, death is not something that
[33:39]you run away from.
[33:41]The reason why we hate death is because we have not made
[33:47]the effort to prepare for it.
[33:49]That's why we despise death.
[33:50]Otherwise, death is like graduation.
[33:53]For those serious students who have straight A's, do they dread their
[34:01]day of graduation or do they look forward to it?
[34:04]People have graduation parties, right?
[34:06]You look forward to it because you're graduating from one dimension in
[34:13]your life to another dimension.
[34:14]Which student dreads the day of graduation?
[34:18]Which student hates graduation day?
[34:21]those who failed, right?
[34:22]They do not look forward to the day of graduation, they despise
[34:27]it.
[34:28]They run away from it.
[34:29]Why?
[34:29]Because they're not prepared.
[34:30]Death is graduation for the m you graduate from and you embrace
[34:38]the that's what death is.
[34:39]And if you have prepared yourself, it's a beautiful graduation.
[34:43]And so the imam uses this beautiful term to describe death.
[34:49]It's like a beautiful necklace.
[34:50]It adorns you if you have prepared yourself.
[34:54]It's not something that you should hate.
[34:57]You're going back to Allah, a merciful Lord.
[35:00]But you have to be prepared.
[35:05]And it's not that difficult to be prepared.
[35:06]One day, according to a hadith, the angel of death descended on
[35:12]Ibraim.
[35:13]Ibraim told him, "Have you come to visit me or have you
[35:19]come to take my soul, my life?" He told him, "Ibraim, no,
[35:24]this time I've come for your soul.
[35:27]Your time's up." Ibraim had the honorary title of being the friend
[35:34]of God, the one chosen by God.
[35:36]So Ibraim presents the angel of death with a very tough question
[35:42]that the angel of death did not know how to respond to.
[35:46]He told him Ibraim, "Aren't I the friend of God?" He told
[35:56]him, "Yeah, you're the friend of God." He told him, "Have you
[36:02]seen a friend who makes his friend die?" The angel of death
[36:06]didn't know what to say to him.
[36:07]What an interesting objection.
[36:11]What do I say to you?
[36:11]So he stops.
[36:13]He leaves.
[36:15]He says to Allah, "Oh Allah, you heard the conversation.
[36:16]You heard what Ibraim said.
[36:18]I don't know what to respond to him." Allahh told the angel
[36:26]of death, "Go and tell Ibraim the following.
[36:34]The angel of death came to Ibraim.
[36:38]He told him, "I've got a response for you from God." Told
[36:41]him, "What's the response?" He says, "Allah says, and have you seen
[36:45]a habib, a beloved, someone who's in love who hates to meet
[36:48]his beloved?" That's death is that meeting between you and your beloved.
[36:55]You are going back to Allah subhana wa ta'ala.
[36:58]When the angel of death says that to Ibraim, Ibraim says, "Ya
[37:01]Allah, take my soul." He tells the angel of death, "Take my
[37:05]soul.
[37:05]I want to now go back to Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala." It's
[37:08]the graduation for the believer.
[37:11]And that's why I im Hussein describes death as a necklace because
[37:18]it beautifies the one who's on the path of Allah subhana wa
[37:25]ta'ala.
[37:26]And hence, Im Hussein famously state stated I see death as nothing
[37:31]but what?
[37:30]Happiness, a source of joy, nothing but success.
[37:34]And I see life with the oppressors as nothing but humiliation.
[37:39]If I live and I have to accept the oppression of Yazid
[37:43]and I can't defend the oppressed, this life is not worth living.
[37:47]My dear brothers and sisters, those people around the world who don't
[37:51]care about the suffering of those children starving, literally starving in Gaza
[37:57]right now.
[37:58]Now, there are a lot of people who care.
[38:00]They just don't know what to do.
[38:02]They pray, they try to pressure, they do something.
[38:04]That's wonderful.
[38:05]You're doing your part.
[38:06]There are a lot of people, there are many people who consider
[38:09]themselves Muslims.
[38:11]They don't care what's happening in Gaza.
[38:16]It doesn't matter.
[38:15]This life that you live and you do not care about the
[38:22]oppressed.
[38:20]This life according to the legacy of Imam Hussein is not worth
[38:26]living.
[38:27]This is humiliation.
[38:26]You could be rich.
[38:29]You could have trillions of dollars but you are in abject humiliation.
[38:33]Look at the irony brothers and sisters.
[38:36]Some of these countries they have trillions of dollars to invest.
[38:41]But with all their trillions, they can't save just a few thousand
[38:48]children in Gaza from starving.
[38:49]Show me more humiliation than that in history where you have trillions
[38:56]of dollars.
[38:55]You can't save a few babies from dying.
[39:00]Is this life worth living?
[39:04]The imam therefore changes the perspective of about life and death.
[39:12]If you're on God's obedience, you care about humanity, you're willing to
[39:17]stand up for justice, that's the best life, that's a beautiful necklace
[39:20]that adorns you.
[39:20]And death is also a beautiful necklace that adorns you because you're
[39:24]on the path of God and the path of justice.
[39:27]And if you're not on this path, you're in humiliation.
[39:30]So that's how the Imam Alam starts his speech.
[39:34]And then the imam states, Then the Imam says, "And I miss
[39:47]dearly my family members who have passed away." You know, I im
[39:51]Hussein was the fifth of the people of the cloak.
[39:55]He was the last of them.
[39:55]He says, "I miss them just like missed Ysef." Imagine the emotional
[40:04]agony in the heart of Imam Hussein missing his grandfather his father
[40:09]al his mother Fatima his brother Hassan it's as if the Imam
[40:15]is saying I don't want to stay in this dunya anymore I
[40:17]don't want to stay in this ugly world I want to join
[40:21]the I want to join my immediate family and then the IM
[40:28]foreshadows his death in Kbala he says It's as if I can
[40:40]see my body parts being cut into pieces around Kerbala in the
[40:43]deserts and the plains of Kurbala.
[40:46]But oh Imam, do you reject that?
[40:51]If that's your fate, if that's the only way to save Islam,
[40:53]do you reject that?
[40:54]Allah, here is where you see the greatness of Imam Hussein.
[40:59]He says, If Allah is pleased, we're pleased.
[41:11]God's satisfaction is our satisfaction.
[41:14]If this pleases God, I'm happy.
[41:19]I have no objection to the will of God.
[41:21]If you want peace of mind in your life, if you want
[41:28]to protect your mental health, accept the will that Allah subhana ta
[41:33]has given you.
[41:34]Accept what Allah has decided for you.
[41:37]Once a young man came to me, he told me, "Say it,
[41:42]there's one thing that I cannot accept in my life." I told
[41:48]him what he he told me I'm angry at God for giving
[41:51]me the parents that he has given me.
[41:53]I hate my parents.
[41:55]I can't stand them.
[41:55]I wish I had a different set of parents.
[41:58]Now, I'm not here to judge this young man.
[42:01]I don't know what he's going through.
[42:02]You know, what kind of parents he has.
[42:05]Are they toxic parents?
[42:07]Are they good parents?
[42:07]Maybe he's toxic.
[42:09]I don't know.
[42:09]But what I said to him, I told him, let me ask
[42:13]you a question.
[42:14]Did you choose your parents?
[42:15]He's like, no, of course I would never choose parents like that.
[42:21]I told him, okay, so who chose your parents for you?
[42:26]He said, well, obviously Allah chose my parents.
[42:29]I told him, would God choose something bad for you?
[42:35]It's your trial.
[42:38]Work on yourself.
[42:38]This is your trial.
[42:41]This is the trial that Allah has decided for you.
[42:44]It could be a family trial.
[42:45]It could be a health trial.
[42:46]It could be any type of trial.
[42:47]But if something has been decided for you by Allah, accept it.
[42:53]And that's what I Hussein communicates in this beautiful sermon.
[42:59]If there's something that you don't like in your life, be patient.
[43:05]It's okay.
[43:04]Allah decided that for you.
[43:07]Yeah, there are some things you can control.
[43:09]You can change.
[43:10]There's a bad friend who's making you deviate.
[43:13]Habibi, get rid of that friend.
[43:15]You don't need a friend who's going to destroy your faith and
[43:20]spirituality and take you away from your family.
[43:24]That's my choice.
[43:23]I can decide whom I'm going to associate with.
[43:26]But there are some things in life you can't choose.
[43:31]You can't change.
[43:31]Those are determined by Allah.
[43:32]Accept them.
[43:34]Realize that it's good for you to go through this trial.
[43:36]Once you accept the trial, you will be at peace.
[43:40]You will protect your own mental health.
[43:50]We will be patient with the trials that afflict us and Allah
[43:54]will fully reward us.
[43:55]And then here I im Hussein in Mecca he extends his invitation
[44:02]to all those who want to support his message.
[44:09]If you're willing to give us your heart, the blood of your
[44:15]heart, if you're willing to meet Allah and go to the bath
[44:24]of martyrdom, then come and join us.
[44:27]Tomorrow I'm leaving.
[44:31]The imam said this on the 7th of two days before.
[44:35]Tomorrow I'm leaving.
[44:38]If you want to join me, come and join me.
[44:41]This was one of the beautiful speeches that I im Hussein Alisam
[44:46]gave in Mecca.
[44:46]The Imam also gave another beautiful speech full of virtues, full of
[44:53]lessons.
[44:51]I'll summarize for you some beautiful passages from this sermon.
[44:56]In this sermon, the Immiam states, "Patience is a source of beauty
[45:07]for the human being." Many times, my dear brothers and sisters, we
[45:10]think that if we want to be strong and successful, we have
[45:16]to act tough.
[45:18]Especially the guys, right?
[45:22]Let's face it.
[45:21]Some of us have a distorted understanding of what masculinity is.
[45:27]And we think masculinity means to be aggressive, to act tough, show
[45:35]no mercy, use profane language.
[45:37]That's how you prove that you're a man.
[45:40]Isn't it?
[45:43]So that's what social media tells us these days.
[45:47]Imam Hussein Alisam says, "No, that's not the case.
[45:50]You know what really makes you a man and beautifies you as
[45:56]a human being?
[45:58]To be patient, to be forbearing and forgiving.
[46:00]And it's not easy.
[46:04]One of your hardest trials in this world is to stop yourself
[46:07]from seeking revenge, from reacting when you're raging.
[46:13]Moments of rage destroy our lives.
[46:17]I've seen marriages fall apart because of one moment of rage.
[46:25]Friendships getting destroyed because of rage.
[46:26]The Imam states, "Do you want to adorn yourself and your personality
[46:31]and be a beautiful human being?
[46:33]All you have to do is be patient.
[46:36]That's where you show your true selfworth, not by reacting and acting
[46:44]tough and aggressive.
[46:44]Whose path are you following when you're trying to act aggressive?
[46:49]Like one brother, you know, they they had a problem in the
[46:53]family and he was very aggressive.
[46:54]I told him, why are you aggressive?
[46:55]You seem to be a decent person.
[46:57]Why are you acting so aggressive in the house?
[47:01]Especially with your wife.
[47:02]It's like say it.
[47:04]I need to constantly remind her who's the husband, who's the man
[47:07]in the house.
[47:08]I told him, whose path are you following?
[47:11]You want to show her who's the man in the house.
[47:14]Show her a strong sense of responsibility.
[47:18]Make her feel safe.
[47:21]Show your family that you'll protect them.
[47:23]You'll be a source of guidance for them.
[47:25]That's how you show them that you're a man, not through being
[47:29]aggressive.
[47:28]Being aggressive will never solve any of your problems.
[47:33]Now, sometimes some men, they're intimidating and their family's scared of them
[47:37]and they think they've got everything in control.
[47:39]If you're in the house and your family is scared of you,
[47:42]right?
[47:43]They're trying to avoid pushing your buttons because they fear you, there's
[47:48]no true love in this family.
[47:50]That's not the path that Allahh wants for you.
[47:54]There's no sukun and tranquility in this family.
[47:57]So the imam states, and then the imam states, you want to
[48:07]know what's manhood?
[48:07]In other words, what really makes you a human being?
[48:11]Murua in Arabic doesn't mean manhood as in being a male.
[48:16]No, it means like being a true human being.
[48:17]Loyalty.
[48:19]Loyalty is it defines you as a human being.
[48:23]One of the best qualities to have brothers and sisters is to
[48:29]be loyal.
[48:29]Loyal to those who served you, who treated you well, who were
[48:34]there for you when you needed them.
[48:36]One of the greatest qualities of our beloved prophet was his waf.
[48:42]He would never forget those who were good to him, good to
[48:46]his family.
[48:46]Long after Lady Khadijaham passed away, when the prophet was in Medina,
[48:52]his friends and his family noticed that he would give a lot
[48:58]of assistance to old ladies.
[48:59]He would give them food assistance.
[49:02]So one day someone objected to the prophet.
[49:05]He told him, Allah, who are these old ladies that you keep
[49:10]helping?
[49:10]They've they haven't done anything special for you.
[49:13]Why are you giving them special treatment?
[49:16]Listen to what the prophet said.
[49:21]The prophet said, "They are the friends of my wife Khadijah and
[49:25]I loved my wife Khadijah.
[49:26]In honor of Khadijah, I will be good to them till the
[49:33]rest of my life." That's loyalty.
[49:35]If there are people in the community who were good to your
[49:39]parents, who stood with your family in times of difficulty, don't forget
[49:42]them.
[49:43]Many times we forget.
[49:43]When I need someone and they do me a favor, I respect
[49:47]them.
[49:48]I'm kind.
[49:49]I'm willing to help them out.
[49:49]But the day I feel powerful and I don't need anyone else,
[49:52]I forget about everyone else.
[49:55]Is that loyalty?
[49:56]Is that loyalty?
[49:58]One of my friends once told me in another state, he told
[50:02]me say at one point I was very well off.
[50:05]if I was doing well.
[50:06]I had good businesses.
[50:09]I had so many friends.
[50:09]So many friends.
[50:09]Like there was a whole line of friends trying to befriend me.
[50:13]And I really thought that they were my friends.
[50:18]Like nice, I have all these friends.
[50:18]Years later, he gets into a car accident.
[50:25]His health is now affected.
[50:26]And then he gets hit by one trial after another trial.
[50:31]He loses his his businesses.
[50:32]He loses his money, he falls into debt.
[50:36]He told me, say, I went to people whom I had given
[50:39]a loan of $50,000 so they can buy a house.
[50:43]That much assistance.
[50:45]I told them, can I borrow $5,000?
[50:47]I'm struggling to feed my children, my family.
[50:49]It's like say not one of my tens of friends gave me
[50:56]a single dollar.
[50:56]It's like that day I really knew who my real friends are.
[51:01]These people were there because of my status.
[51:05]A sign of iman is to be loyal.
[51:09]To be loyal to your parents who served you.
[51:10]Even if now you have a misunderstanding with your parents.
[51:15]Never forget the days that they sacrificed for you.
[51:18]Loyalty means you honor them.
[51:22]That's a sign of being a human being.
[51:24]These are the words of Im Hussein.
[51:26]Remember before these are the activities of your im.
[51:30]the words of your Imam.
[51:33]The Imam Alisam didn't go to a physical battleground only.
[51:36]The Imisam was transforming the souls and the personalities.
[51:41]And then the Imam states being hasty is a sign of foolishness.
[51:50]We live in a culture of instant gratification.
[51:52]We want instant results.
[51:54]The Imam says that's a sign of foolishness.
[51:57]Don't be hasty.
[52:00]Always restrain yourself.
[52:02]But we live in an era we act on impulse.
[52:07]We want everything instantly.
[52:08]We want instant results.
[52:09]We have no time to wait.
[52:13]No patience to wait.
[52:13]You see something on Amazon, you need to pay more so it
[52:18]gets delivered in the next three hours.
[52:20]Like you're going to die if it doesn't get delivered in the
[52:22]next three hours.
[52:24]We've lost patience.
[52:24]We want everything instantaneously.
[52:26]The Imam says a sign of intellect of being a sound human
[52:35]being is not to be hasty.
[52:37]Hasty hastiness is foolishness.
[52:40]So it's a very beautiful sermon.
[52:43]I just shared with you some parts of it.
[52:46]These are some of the words of your IM in Mecca.
[52:47]And then the Imisam on the eth of he shocks the Muslim
[52:53]world when all pilgrims are arriving in Mecca.
[52:57]The Imam Alisam departs the city of Mecca on the eth of
[53:01]one day before Hajj.
[53:03]People are shocked.
[53:05]Many of us wonder why Imam couldn't you do your Hajj and
[53:08]then leave?
[53:09]So why did I im Hussein leave Mecca on the 8th of
[53:14]There are two primary reasons.
[53:15]Number one, the Imam did not want to get killed by the
[53:21]Kaa.
[53:19]When he was asked, why are you leaving?
[53:22]He said the Omayad will assassinate me here.
[53:25]They had sent 30 secret assassins to kill Imam Hussein.
[53:30]And the Imam says Haram is a holy place.
[53:33]The Kaa is holy place.
[53:33]I don't want my blood to be spilled here.
[53:36]I have to leave Mecca.
[53:36]They will kill me in Mecca if I stay.
[53:39]Number two, the Imam was saying to the world, what's the value
[53:45]of your Hajj?
[53:45]When you have accepted the injustice of Yazid, there is no value
[53:51]to such Hajj.
[53:50]That's another reason why the Imam Alam leaves one day before the
[53:57]Hajj.
[53:55]The Hajj is an act of worship for Allah.
[53:58]Right?
[53:58]If you've accepted the injustice of Yazid, you think this Hajj has
[54:05]any value?
[54:03]It's just a ritual now.
[54:07]Robots going around the Caba.
[54:08]The true Hajj means it inspires you to stand up against injustice.
[54:14]Subhan Allah.
[54:14]Look at the Muslim world today.
[54:15]I'm not going to say more than that.
[54:18]The fact that Imam Hussein left on that day says a lot.
[54:23]My dear brothers and sisters, read between the lines.
[54:26]The Muslim ummah sometimes they're very happy.
[54:29]They're very proud of their achievements.
[54:31]Really an achievement when your children are dying in that's an achievement.
[54:37]So the Imam Alisam leaves the city of Mecca on the 8th
[54:45]of From there he goes through a number of stations before he
[54:50]reaches KBA.
[54:49]Inshallah in the next two nights I will walk you through many
[54:54]of these stations and the important events that happened on this beautiful
[55:01]powerful historic journey from Mecca to Kbar.
[55:04]Now I want you to take your hearts to the second of
[55:08]muharam.
[55:08]Imam Hussein leaves Mecca.
[55:10]He goes through a number of villages.
[55:12]He arrives on the second of muharam.
[55:15]A day like today when the Imam Alisam arrives in this land.
[55:21]According to Abu Mikn, he has a report that states the following.
[55:26]The Imam was on his horse.
[55:29]His horse refused to move.
[55:32]So the Imam Alisam he went down from his horse he rode
[55:38]on another horse.
[55:41]The horse refused to move.
[55:42]The report says Imam Hussein changed seven horses on that day.
[55:46]They all refused to move an inch.
[55:48]The Imam knew that this was the land.
[55:52]He knew his fate will be sealed here in this land.
[55:57]So when he realized that the horses are not willing to move,
[56:02]the imam asked his companions, he told them, "My dear companions, what's
[56:09]the name of this land?
[56:10]Can you tell me that area had a number of names?" One
[56:14]of them said, "Lad, the imam said, does it have another name?"
[56:20]Someone said, The imam asked, "Does it have another name?" Someone said,
[56:29]"But the Imam was searching for a word that he had heard
[56:34]from his grandfather." Finally, one of his companions, he stands up and
[56:43]he says, "Yes." One of the names of this land is [Music]
[56:59]when Im Hussein heard the word, he broke into tears.
[57:06]Ya Allah, imagine what happened to the heart of your im and
[57:12]he said, [Music] Oh Allah, I seek refuge in you from and
[57:23]is a word that's made of two words, difficulty, trials and tragedies.
[57:30]And then the imam addressed his companions.
[57:34]He told them, [Music] "My dear companions, this is where we shall
[57:44]settle.
[57:45]We're not going to travel anymore.
[57:46]Our fate is going to be here." Then the imam told them
[57:52]exactly what would happen.
[57:53][Music] My dear companions, this is where our men are going to
[58:05]be killed.
[58:07][Music] My dear companions, this is where our children are going to
[58:19]get slaughtered.
[58:17]It is here.
[58:20]this land [Music] as habi.
[58:29]My companions, this is where our women will be taken as prisoners
[58:35]of war.
[58:34]As habi, this is where I will be killed.
[58:37]That's where Abbas will be killed.
[58:39]Imagine Z when she heard Im Hussein foreshadowing what would happen in
[58:46]Kbala she collapsed.
[58:51]She said [Music] this is how they arrived in the land of
[58:56]Kbala.
[58:58]But there was a little girl in Kbala by the name of
[59:02]Rukaya.
[59:03]She still felt safe.
[59:04]She still had her father.
[59:07]She still had her uncle Abbas.
[59:08]But but all believers, now take your hearts to the city of
[59:15]Sham in Damascus and Syria.
[59:17]Weeks after Ash, when the caravan of Imam Hussein is taken into
[59:24]the presence of Yazid, they put them in ruins.
[59:29]They did not give them a proper place to stay.
[59:31]Had missed her father dearly.
[59:34]She was very attached to Imam Hussein.
[59:37]She was only three or four.
[59:39]So one night in those ruins, Roaya sees a dream.
[59:42]She sees her father.
[59:46]She misses her father dearly.
[59:50]She wakes up and she breaks into tears.
[59:51]What's the matter with you?
[59:54]I saw my father in my dream.
[59:56]Now I miss him.
[59:59]I just want my father.
[60:00]Hussein.
[60:01]Everyone in those ruins, they begin to cry.
[60:03]The woman and the children.
[60:04]Yazid hears commotion.
[60:05]So he asks his soldiers, "What's going on?
[60:08]What's happening in those ruins in the family of Imam Hussein?" They
[60:11]told him, "It's nothing.
[60:12]No big deal." He says, "No, I want to know." They tell
[60:15]him, "One of the daughters of Hussein.
[60:18]She woke up in the middle of the night.
[60:20]She saw her father in her dream.
[60:24]She misses her father.
[60:25]She cried and everyone's crying for them.
[60:28]Look at his savage, cruel heart." He tells them, "Then what are
[60:33]you waiting for?
[60:35]Take the head of her father to her.
[60:37]Let her see the head of her father." And they put the
[60:40]head of Imam Hussein in a tray.
[60:43]They cover the tray with a piece of cloth.
[60:44]They bring the tray to She tells them, "What is this?
[60:49]Is this food?
[60:51]I didn't ask for food." And they told her, "This is not
[60:54]food.
[60:55]This is what you've been asking for.
[60:57]what I've been asking for.
[61:00]What could it be?
[61:00]Remove the cloth and you'll see what it is.
[61:05]Imagine the little hands of she goes to the train.
[61:13]She removes the cloth.
[61:15]She sees the severed head of her father Hussein.
[61:23]She collapses on the head of Imam Hussein.
[61:26]She hugs the head of Im Hussein.
[61:29][Music] My dear father, who is the one who orphaned me at
[61:43]this young age?
[61:51]My dear father, who's the one who cut your head?
[62:00][Music] My dear father, who's the one who stained your beard with
[62:11]blood?
[62:09]She kept on crying and crying, hugging the head of her father
[62:17]Hussein until finally she quieted down.
[62:19]She was calm.
[62:19]No sound was coming from her.
[62:23]The people the the family of Im Hussein the woman and the
[62:26]children they thought finally now has some time to rest.
[62:30]At that point I im he calls on his Z he tells
[62:37]her Z up lift my sister from the head of my father.
[62:42]I swear by Allah she has departed this life.
[62:46]She died on the head of my father Hussein.
[62:48][Music] After dies, her aunt, she brings a lady to wash the
[62:57]body of she starts washing her but then she stops.
[63:03]She refuses.
[63:05]Kathum tells her, "Why don't you wash the little body of this
[63:09]girl?" She says, "I'm afraid." She's like, "Why are you afraid?" It's
[63:12]like, she seems to have a disease.
[63:14]There are all these black marks on her body.
[63:18]Says wallah this is not a disease.
[63:24]So what is this thing?
[63:27]She says on our way from Gerbala to Syria.
[63:30]Anytime she would cry.
[63:35]Anytime she would grieve those evil men would beat her body with
[63:43]the back of the spears and the sticks.
[63:45]Yes.
[63:46]Yes.
[63:50][Applause] [Music] [Music] Hussein.
