[0:20]Not so good.
[0:32]Man, [Music] for mah.
[1:04]Yeah, [Music] for [Music] Ali.
[2:10][Music] Why you that [Music] illuminate your hearts and minds with a
[2:40]loud salawat.
[2:48]Today, if you were to hear in the community that parents sponsored
[2:56]the education of their son and daughter, and they paid $100,000 for
[3:05]their college education to sponsor the tuition for four or six years.
[3:12]How would you view such parents?
[3:15]How would we as a community comment on that?
[3:20]I'm sure that all of you will be very positive.
[3:24]We would praise these parents.
[3:30]We would say these are remarkable parents.
[3:32]You worked so hard to allow your son or daughter to get
[3:40]quality education.
[3:39]We would praise these parents and we would see them as heroes.
[3:45]We would see them as role models.
[3:49]And that is something that is commendable.
[3:52]We would commend any parent who would allow their children to have
[4:01]a quality academic education.
[4:01]But now I have a question here.
[4:06]If there are parents here in the community who wanted to give
[4:15]$100,000 for their son or daughter to invest in their religious education
[4:22]to teach them the Quran, memorize the Quran and understand the Quran
[4:27]to study the religious sciences of Now if you heard a parent
[4:36]in the community did that what kind of comments would you hear?
[4:39]Would you hear the same type of comments?
[4:42]Probably very very different, right?
[4:47]Oh, this is extreme.
[4:48]These crazy parents, what are they doing?
[4:53]$100,000 for religious education.
[4:53]Is is it necessary?
[4:56]You're wasting your resources.
[5:00]You're wasting the future of your children.
[5:01]I'm sure that we would get some very very different comments here.
[5:08]But now my dear brothers and sisters, we want to know what
[5:15]Im al Hussein inspires us to do.
[5:18]Because we've gathered here to be inspired by his legacy.
[5:22]If you were to ask the imam what his position is about
[5:28]the scenario, what would he say?
[5:31]What would he comment about those parents who invested 100,000 in the
[5:36]religious education of their children?
[5:37]Would he mock them?
[5:40]Do you think he'd criticize them?
[5:43]Well, we do actually have an example from his life.
[5:47]According to a report, Imam Hussein brought a Quran teacher to teach
[5:56]one of his sons fat, one of his young boys.
[5:58]Now notice something here.
[6:01]Imam Hussein doesn't need anyone to teach his children.
[6:03]Can you find a better teacher than the Imam?
[6:07]But the Imam is making a point.
[6:14]He brings a teacher to teach his son Fat.
[6:15]And I think his son already knew Fat.
[6:17]But the imam is making a statement after the teacher taught his
[6:24]son the opening chapter of the Quran.
[6:26]You know what I Hussein Alisam gave him?
[6:30]The hadith states he gave him a handful of jewelry.
[6:32]Gold, silver, and precious stones.
[6:35]Now, I don't know the value of a handful of jewelry.
[6:41]Maybe the sisters would know better, but it's very heavy.
[6:44]A handful.
[6:46]We're talking about thousands of dollars in value.
[6:52]Maybe 20, $30,000.
[6:51]Imagine if you can get pure gold and fill your hand with
[6:58]it.
[6:59]That's very expensive.
[7:00]Al Abu Abdah Hussein gave that much money to a Quran teacher
[7:07]to teach his son Fat.
[7:12]And you know what the result was?
[7:16]All of the children of Imam Hussein, they lived the Quran.
[7:22]They breathed the Quran.
[7:22]Come to his fouryear-old girl in Kbalah.
[7:27]The journalist Hmed ib Muslim or Hammed Ib Muslim.
[7:31]He says on the 10th of Muaram after Imam Hussein Alisam was
[7:39]massacred after the tents were set to fire I saw a little
[7:41]girl in Kbal.
[7:44]Part of her clothes had caught some fire and she didn't know
[7:48]what to do.
[7:50]when she was running on the hot plains of Kerbala, I felt
[7:53]bad for her.
[7:55]So I went and I helped her extinguish the fire.
[7:58]Then she looked at me and she said, "Yeah, oh man, are
[8:03]you with us or against us?" I told her, "I'm neither with
[8:09]you or against you.
[8:09]I'm just here observing." Then he said, I was intrigued to know
[8:12]who this little girl is.
[8:16]I asked her, who are you?
[8:18]Can you introduce yourself?
[8:18]She told me, "Subhan Allah, you just burned to death and you're
[8:27]running and the tents were set to fire and you're going through
[8:33]a tragedy that would make adults crazy and lose their mind and
[8:37]you ask me about the Quran." He was shocked.
[8:42]He said, "Yes, I'm familiar with the Quran.
[8:44]Why?
[8:44]What does the Quran have to do with my question?
[8:48]I'm just asking you who are you?
[8:50]She tells him.
[9:00]Oh man, have you read this verse in the Quran?
[9:03]As for the orphan, don't hurt the orphan.
[9:07]Don't harass the orphan.
[9:12]He said, "Yes, I've read this verse.
[9:17]Why?" She tells him, "Yeah, anatim Hussein.
[9:19]I'm the orphan of Hussein." He said, "I realized that she is
[9:25]one of the daughters of Imam Hussein." This is the upbringing of
[9:29]Imam Hussein.
[9:30]He invested in the religious education of his children.
[9:33]The result is they go through the most severe tragedy in history
[9:37]and yet she retains her mind and her faith.
[9:40]and she coats the Quran even though she was about to burn
[9:47]alive.
[9:45]That's the family of Imam Hussein.
[9:48]What does that tell us?
[9:51]My dear brothers and sisters, academic education is great.
[9:54]We Muslims, we should be the pioneers of academic education and that's
[9:59]how we achieve social success here in this country.
[10:04]But what is more important is religious education.
[10:07]for us to know the Quran in and out, to breathe the
[10:13]verses of the Quran, to quote the Quran.
[10:15]In every trial that you go through, you have a verse that
[10:20]you already have studied and you can apply it to your life.
[10:23]Many of us, my dear brothers and sisters, we are disconnected from
[10:29]the Holy Quran, disconnected from the depth of our faith.
[10:32]Allah has given you this one divine book.
[10:36]Even the names of the chapters, we don't know them, let alone
[10:40]the content of some of the suras.
[10:43]Not here in this hall.
[10:45]May Allah bless all of you.
[10:46]But ask, try one day in any average Muslim community.
[10:51]Tell them, tell me what does mean?
[10:54]Just the meaning of it, just the theme.
[10:56]What is it about?
[10:56]What does mean?
[10:59]Sounds foreign to a lot of us.
[11:04]Allah has given you 114 treasures in the Quran and we don't
[11:07]even know the name of those treasures.
[11:11]Our children don't even know what they signify.
[11:13]When it comes to sports players, mashallah, we have very good memory.
[11:19]We can memorize thousands of sports players names, their history, how they've
[11:25]scored.
[11:26]But when it comes to the book of Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala,
[11:30]we do struggle.
[11:31]Imam Hussein teaches us to invest in the religious education of your
[11:39]children.
[11:37]That's how we make him happy.
[11:40]And my dear brothers and sisters, to achieve that, we need solid
[11:48]strong religious institutions in our community.
[11:51]The more we have religious institutions, the stronger we are as a
[11:57]community.
[11:57]I know sometimes some people, and it's out of good intentions.
[12:00]I'm not here to judge them.
[12:01]Sometimes some people when they hear there's a new project in town,
[12:04]there's a new jam.
[12:07]There's a new community center.
[12:09]Sometimes that bothers them.
[12:10]Do we really need another masjid?
[12:12]Another jam.
[12:14]My dear brothers and sisters, do you know the size of this
[12:17]wonderful community?
[12:20]Mashallah tens of thousands of the followers of B only over 200,000
[12:28]Muslims in this metro area.
[12:31]Any other religious community would have had 10 more religious institutions than
[12:36]we have.
[12:38]That's not something that should bother us.
[12:41]That's something that should make us proud.
[12:44]Today we are facing unprecedented challenges.
[12:47]My dear brothers and sisters, you've seen the rise of Islamophobia.
[12:52]We've seen people in the highest office sometimes antagonizing us.
[12:58]We may be going through an existential threat here in this country.
[13:04]It is through institutions, through investing in our faith, building a strong
[13:11]identity in our community that will bring us to success.
[13:13]I sometimes hear from you know some of our Shabbab some of
[13:18]our brothers say what's the point you see these lobbies they're so
[13:22]powerful you think they'll ever give us a voice to make any
[13:24]change absolutely you have the power to change my dear brothers and
[13:31]sisters today every one of you you have social media social media
[13:35]is transforming the world it's transforming America and your voice can be
[13:41]heard change can be possible whether whether the lobbies like it or
[13:45]not.
[13:45]And the best example, are you following what's happening in in New
[13:50]York City?
[13:51]The lobbies are shocked.
[13:52]They cannot process it.
[13:53]How did this Muslim just come out of nowhere and now he
[13:58]might be the mayor of New York?
[14:00]Many lobbyists are upset, but they may not necessarily be able to
[14:09]stop such successes from happening in the country today.
[14:11]Your voice has weight and you can make a difference my dear
[14:15]brothers and sisters.
[14:18]But that requires a strong community, a unified community, a community with
[14:25]strong institutions.
[14:25]The more we have institutions and the more we support them, the
[14:32]stronger we will be, the better the future will be for our
[14:35]children.
[14:36]This is something to be proud of.
[14:37]And we're truly proud of you, my dear brothers and sisters.
[14:41]We're truly proud of your support.
[14:45]First of all, your physical support coming and attending the madis of
[14:49]Imam Hussein.
[14:51]I know it wasn't easy trying to find a parking spot, trying
[14:54]to get a place here.
[14:54]It was very difficult.
[14:57]I know many of you are busy.
[14:59]You had a long day.
[15:02]You work very hard.
[15:02]But you did this for Imam Hussein.
[15:06]And Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala will reward you for that.
[15:09]Allah will bless you and your families for that.
[15:12]I would like to sincerely thank all of you who supported this
[15:17]program during these nights, especially the volunteers who worked so hard to
[15:24]make this program possible for us and especially tonight for you supporting
[15:28]the new project.
[15:30]My dear brothers and sisters, that inshallah we will all benefit from
[15:34]in the following year.
[15:35]Any institution that you support in this community will strengthen the community.
[15:41]My dear brothers and sisters, that's how we secure the future of
[15:48]our community, especially our children.
[15:50]And alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah, Allah has blessed us with a very wonderful community
[15:57]that has access to a lot of resources.
[15:58]I remember a few years ago our dear brother Hajami we were
[16:04]sitting and discussing how much this community spends on weddings.
[16:08]Remember that Hajami I wanted just to get an idea to see
[16:11]alhamdulillah how generous the community potentially could be not during bharam of
[16:19]course during the wedding seasons you know how much we as a
[16:23]community spend on weddings per week.
[16:25]Can someone guess how much?
[16:31]Two million.
[16:30]Close.
[16:31]A little bit more.
[16:33]Three to4 million dollar.
[16:37]And we were conservative with our estimate.
[16:42]3 to4 million on weddings per week.
[16:44]Now, I'm not saying anything negative about that.
[16:47]Your wedding, as long as it's your right, inshallah, you enjoy it.
[16:54]May Allah bless you.
[16:54]If you look at the, you know, money that we spent to
[16:59]book the halls, the decor, the women who go to the salon
[17:04]that day, God knows how much they spend.
[17:05]Combine all of that, the gifts that you give, that's three to
[17:11]four million a week, my dear brothers and sisters, that means Allah
[17:16]subhana wa ta'ala has given us access to resources.
[17:20]Now, if there's a new institution that's being built for your community,
[17:25]that's what three weeks, three three weeks of weddings, and you are
[17:30]securing your future.
[17:32]You are securing the education of your children.
[17:35]And that's what we learned from Imam Hussein.
[17:39]That's how we sacrifice.
[17:42]And alhamdulillah, you do my dear brothers and sisters.
[17:44]But tonight my message is let's invest more in the religious education
[17:50]of our children especially when it comes to the Quran.
[17:54]I know there are Quran programs out here in the community but
[18:00]sometimes they face very little support.
[18:02]I remember 7 years ago here at the IIA we started a
[18:08]Quran academy.
[18:07]Alhamdulillah, many families benefited, but generally speaking, we did not find much
[18:14]support for such initiatives.
[18:16]We need to value the Quran more and be willing to invest.
[18:21]My dear brothers and sisters, sometimes we parents, we show up, ya
[18:25]Allah, I want to give $50 a month and I get the
[18:28]best quality Quran program.
[18:29]Bring me the best teachers from the world.
[18:31]That's not going to happen.
[18:33]Other communities, my dear brothers and sisters, other communities who have solid
[18:38]Quran memorizing institutions or teaching institutions, they spend millions of dollars on
[18:46]those institutions and they get a good quality Quran program.
[18:48]Am I willing to make that sacrifice?
[18:51]Some of us when it comes to the sports of our children,
[18:55]we enroll them in tournaments and pay $600 a month, which is
[18:59]fine.
[19:00]That's good.
[19:02]Your children should be active.
[19:03]But what's more important for us to be physically active or for
[19:08]our spirit to be with the Quran?
[19:10]That's what we learn from the message of Imam Hussein.
[19:14]My dear brothers and sisters to invest as much as we can
[19:20]in the religious and spiritual education of our children.
[19:22]That way we'll be a much stronger community here.
[19:27]Tomorrow no one can threaten you.
[19:29]It can come from the highest office in the country.
[19:33]It doesn't matter.
[19:33]You're strong and you have institutions to protect you and to give
[19:36]us guidance.
[19:38]That's how we will protect our rights in this country.
[19:42]And we will make a difference.
[19:43]And the stronger you are here, my dear brothers and sisters, the
[19:46]more lives you can save in Gaza, in Lebanon, and in other
[19:51]parts of the world.
[19:52]Because when you have a stronger voice and a more active role
[19:55]over here, you can make a difference.
[20:00]We can help bring global justice.
[20:01]My dear brothers and sisters, never underestimate your potential and your impact
[20:07]here.
[20:07]That's the message that inspires us coming from Alm Hussein.
[20:14]This great Imam who invested in the youth and knew the value
[20:20]of the youth.
[20:20]Kbala would not be Kbala without the youth of Kbala.
[20:25]They made this journey special.
[20:32]They made this battle very special Hassan which we commemorated last night.
[20:39]It's gems like that who made Kbala so special.
[20:42]And tonight we commemorate the flower of the heart of Imam Hussein
[20:49]his eldest son Ali Akbar.
[20:54]You know what was so special about Ali Akbar?
[20:57]Those who saw him and they had met the prophet sallallahu alaihi
[21:05]wasall they had said that we had not seen anyone who would
[21:10]remind us of in his physical appearance in his speech and in
[21:20]his like whenever they wanted to see the prophet because they missed
[21:25]him.
[21:26]They would look at the face of Ali Akbar.
[21:29]That was the eldest son of Imam Hussein.
[21:32]Imagine having a son like that.
[21:35]How would your relationship we be with such a son who would
[21:41]remind you of your grandfather?
[21:44]But now came the day of Ashw and Imam Hussein.
[21:48]am had to make a very difficult sacrifice after his companions were
[21:54]killed one by one the youth of Kbalah they came forward Abdah
[21:58]please give us permission now let's go and fight he says no
[22:04]I can't how can I let these flowers these youthful faces go
[22:07]and fight I can't I don't have the heart he would reject
[22:12]he would refuse one by one but then one of those youth
[22:17]came to him and the imam could not reject him.
[22:23]This was a very difficult moment on the heart of Imam Hussein.
[22:28]His son Ali Akbar comes.
[22:29]He tells him, "My dear father, all the companions have been killed.
[22:37]Now allow me to be the first one from your family from
[22:40]Benihashim to go and fight.
[22:42]Give me the honor to make this sacrifice.
[22:46]Oh my dear father Allah.
[22:50]Imagine imagine Imam Hussein look at looking at his son who reminded
[22:56]him ofah.
[22:57]The Imam Alisam hugged him.
[23:00]He began to cry.
[23:02]Yes my dear son I will give you permission but this is
[23:09]very difficult my dear son.
[23:08]How can I let you go Allah?
[23:22]He gets the permission from his father.
[23:25]He takes his sword and he carries with him the courage of
[23:32]his grandfather.
[23:32]He goes to the battlefield.
[23:37]He introduces himself.
[23:39][Music] Fore!
[23:44][Music] Foreign!
[24:02]Foreign!
[24:01][Music] Yes, he introduces himself.
[24:14]You do not know who I am.
[24:16]I am Ali, the son of Hussein, the son of Ali.
[24:19]I swear by the Kaa.
[24:19]We are the closest one to the family of the prophets.
[24:24]I'll use my sword to defend my father and the woman and
[24:27]the children here and we'll never let these evil people play with
[24:32]us like that.
[24:32]Yes, he goes and he fights.
[24:34]According to one report, Im Hussein was standing by the tent.
[24:41]He was looking and the mother of Ali, she was looking at
[24:47]the face of Imam Hussein.
[24:47]She was not seeing the men in the battlefield, but she could
[24:52]see the face of Imam Hussein.
[24:54]Initially, she saw the face of Imam Hussein joyous.
[25:00]Ali Akbar was fighting so courageously.
[25:01]But then Leila notices the face of Imam Hussein changes.
[25:06]She becomes she becomes concerned.
[25:11]She comes to him Abdullah what's happening.
[25:12]Why did your face change?
[25:16]Did something happen to my son Ali?
[25:18]He tells her yes an evil man has come to fight him
[25:22]and I am concerned about this evil man harming my son.
[25:29]The dua of the mother is Allah will answer your dua.
[25:36]Go in your tent.
[25:36]Ask Allah to bring Ali one more time so we can see
[25:42]him.
[25:42]So we can farewell him.
[25:44]She goes inside her tent.
[25:50]She raises her hand.
[25:54][Music] Oh Allah, by the loneliness of Hussein, by the thirst of
[26:13]Hussein, [Music] oh the one who returned Ysef to Please send back
[26:28]my son Ali one last time so I can see him.
[26:33]Allah grants victory to Ali Akbar.
[26:35]He kills Bakim.
[26:35]But now he's dying from thirst.
[26:39]He needs to pause.
[26:39]He rushes back to the tents of Im Hussein.
[26:42]He greets his father.
[26:47]Imam Hussein is happy to see him.
[26:48]But he sees his son exhausted.
[26:50]He tells him [Music] My dear father, I'm dying from thirst and
[27:10]the heaviness of the armor is killing me, exhausting me.
[27:14]Is there a cup of water that you can give me?
[27:20]But Ali, your father Hussein is thirstier than you.
[27:28]Imm Hose shows him this tongue.
[27:31]He touches the tongue of his father and he realizes his father
[27:37]is thirsty thirsty.
[27:38]What a difficult moment.
[27:41]But Imm Hussein here comforts him.
[27:45]He tells him, "Be patient.
[27:47]Soon soon I promise you your grandfather he will give you a
[27:54]cup that will quench your thirst and you'll never ever be thirsty
[27:57]after that again.
[28:00]Then Imam Hussein tells him Ali your mother Leila is waiting for
[28:04]you.
[28:05]She asked Allah to see you for one more time.
[28:09]Go to her territory.
[28:09]Go see her.
[28:13]Comfort her.
[28:11]Farewell her.
[28:14]And she he goes inside the tent.
[28:17]Leila had almost fainted.
[28:20]And then she feels her son Ali caressing her head in the
[28:30]tent.
[28:28]She's very happy to see her son one final time.
[28:34]But now the time comes for the final farewell.
[28:38]Mother, now I must go.
[28:41]I have to make this sacrifice.
[28:45]Mother be patient.
[28:44]May Allah keep you strong.
[28:48]He comes to his father Hussein.
[28:49]My dear father, this is my farewell.
[28:53]How difficult this is on the heart of Hussein and Leila.
[29:00]Ali goes to the battlefield for the last time.
[29:06]But those evil men, they're eager to hurt Imm Hussein.
[29:11]When he goes to the battlefield, Imam Hussein makes a dua even
[29:15]though he's so compassionate.
[29:18]But Allah, these people are too evil.
[29:21]He says, "Oh Allah, bear witness that a young man has come
[29:26]to them.
[29:24]He resembles the prophet most in his physical attributes, in his demeanor.
[29:31]And whenever we would miss Allah, we would look at him.
[29:38]Ya Allah, they're cutting off my progeny.
[29:41]This is so difficult on the heart of Imam Hussein.
[29:44]But Imm Hussein is very strong.
[29:48]Akbar fights.
[29:50]Now he's surrounded by those enemies.
[29:53]They try to attack him.
[29:56]Oh believers, they surround him.
[30:00]one of those enemies.
[30:03]He manages to come to Ali.
[30:07]They've distracted him by attacking him from so many sides.
[30:14]Then that evil person strikes Ali Akbar.
[30:17]The blood gushes from his body.
[30:21]He hugs the head of his horse.
[30:24]But here comes the tragedy.
[30:28]He tried to go back to the tents of Hussein but his
[30:31]blood covered the eyes of his horse.
[30:36]So his horse mistakenly in a moment of confusion goes towards the
[30:42]enemy side.
[30:41]Now they see him struck and bleeding profusely.
[30:46]He's unable to protect himself.
[30:49]They take advantage of that.
[30:52]They strike him with their sword.
[30:56]Oh believers, they cut ali into pieces.
[31:13]Hussein rushes to his son, but it was too late.
[31:20]When he arrived at the body of his son, he saw him
[31:25]dismembered into so many pieces.
[31:28]He said, [Music] "You know what means my dear son?
[31:46]So life is not worth living after you.
[32:00]My dear son, now you're relieved from the difficulties of this dunya.
[32:06]But your father now was left all alone after you to deal
[32:09]with this agony and pain and suffering.
[32:13]Every father, every father wishes that he sees his son grow up
[32:20]and that he dies before his son and that his son carries
[32:22]his casket and goes and attends his funeral.
[32:26]But Imm Hussein had to see the death of his son Ali.
[32:34][Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] Allah these are difficult moments but now
[33:04]Im Hussein he has to carry the body of Akbar to the
[33:09]tent.
[33:10]Imm Hussein is struggling.
[33:10]He picks up one side of his body.
[33:13]The other side falls because he was so dismembered and cut into
[33:20]so many pieces.
[33:19]Finally, Imam Hussein gives up.
[33:22]He calls on the youth of Beni Hashim.
[33:27][Music] [Applause] Come and help me carry Ali.
[33:35]I don't have the strength.
[33:36]I cannot carry carry carry.

[33:44]of Ali.
[33:45]They put it on a straw mat and they took it to
[33:51]the tent.
[33:51]When they brought the body of Ali, Zena broke out.
