[0:19][Music] me [Music] for [Music] [Music] Sala FAS my elders dear brothers
[1:55]and sisters and respected guests peace be upon you all what a
[2:04]great blessing it is to once again enter the holiest of months
[2:08]the month of Ramadan it seems like just yesterday that we were
[2:14]gathered here enjoying the blessings of last year's month of Ramadan it
[2:18]is only when we look around and we see that the children
[2:23]have gained a couple of extra inches we see that there are
[2:25]some new children that have been born within the community and there
[2:29]are some that were present with us last year who are not
[2:32]with us this month of Ramadan that we realize just how fast
[2:37]time has passed furthermore this year the month of Ramadan comes with
[2:45]a sense of sadness as we witness the events affecting the Muslim
[2:48]umah around the world can I ask that we begin by remembering
[2:54]all our those who have passed away with the recitation ofah fa
[3:16]I would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome
[3:20]to all our guests who are visiting us this evening from the
[3:23]Portsmouth anglian cathedral St John's Catholic Cathedral uh St John's Church in
[3:30]shedfield St Nicholas's Church in Portsmouth and St Peter's Church in titchfield
[3:35]as well as the Hampshire constabulary chaplaincy we welcome you all to
[3:40]the AL Mahi Center and are delighted to have you with us
[3:44]this evening without further Ado I'd like to invite our first guest
[3:48]to come and address us the Reverend Canon David Isaac is the
[3:53]area Dean from the St John the Baptist Church of shedfield as
[3:58]we invite him to speak can I ask the m minine to
[4:00]please join me in welcoming him in the traditional way with the
[4:03]recitation ofad my dear friends Salam alaykum I pray that the one
[4:26]God whom I know as Father and Son and Holy Spirit will
[4:28]open my heart and and my lips that I may use my
[4:32]words to honor him and give him praise I delighted and honored
[4:41]to share with you in this first week of Ramadan as you
[4:45]look forward to the enhancement of your life and understanding that it
[4:50]will bring you as in your Humanity you accept the challenge of
[4:56]the discipline of this very special time for me it's very meaningful
[5:00]to be aware with you of the many many millions who share
[5:06]across the world in this time of growth in the spirit because
[5:12]our world especially now needs occasions and expressions of unity and of
[5:19]humility and of obedience and of solidarity although their tensions in both
[5:27]secular and religious Society I think it's important perhaps that we can
[5:33]all of us recognize this common fast at the very least as
[5:40]giving some evidence of the possibility of a vision and commitment greater
[5:46]than just local or national or even theological perspectives and that need
[5:53]is has never been greater I think I think it's a huge
[5:55]challenge for all of us who have faith in the one God
[6:01]by by whatever name we know that God the almighty and loving
[6:04]one who's the source the origin the sustainer and the meaning of
[6:10]all and everything is a huge challenge for us all to hold
[6:13]in balance with integrity and human empathy the traumas now being endured
[6:20]in so many countries with right and wrong being argued for by
[6:23]so many people equally with passion yes and argued about by all
[6:29]of those who claim that God and justice are with them and
[6:31]how easy it is to lose sight of that bigger picture that
[6:37]before the Holy One we are all guilty of lives that fall
[6:43]short of the Purity and the goodness I grieve for our world
[6:48]as I hear and read and watch events in the news and
[6:54]that again is to my mind why this fast in which your
[6:59]community shares why it challenges us to a way of seeing the
[7:02]purpose of life and of religion as being always bigger than individual
[7:07]rights or passions challenges us to a vision of a world which
[7:13]is renewed in humility and obedience before the one God whose life
[7:17]we are all invited to share and to let grow in us
[7:22]I realized in my reflection before coming to you this evening that
[7:27]that the that the mobile nature of Ramadan traveling as a it
[7:32]does throughout the seasons probably intensifies its impact on the life of
[7:38]your Community of Faith by contrast the Christian Church's season of Lent
[7:42]potentially suffers a bit because its impact always comes around at the
[7:46]same time each year with some slight adjustment depending on the date
[7:53]of Easter depending on the moon that word lent in fact comes
[7:59]from the old English word lengthen meaning spring and so this solemn
[8:04]season always gets Associated a bit with other things that happen at
[8:08]this time of the year like flowers beginning to bloom and birds
[8:12]laying eggs and that sort of thing but it's Origins are in
[8:17]a solemn fasting which prepares for the celebration of Easter that high
[8:22]point of the Christian calendar with its demanding and inspiring recollection of
[8:28]the death of Jesus and his entry into New Life by The
[8:33]Gift of the Holy One traditionally this was a time when new
[8:37]converts were brought into the life of the community after much teaching
[8:41]and after fasting and that level of fasting varied across the whole
[8:46]church with some people keeping a similar regime to that of Ramadan
[8:51]daylight fasting but most people are staining from some foods for the
[8:55]whole of that 40 Days for meat from anything sweet from fat
[9:02]from baked goods in some ways that season of absence fitted quite
[9:07]well into an agricultural economy which by this stage of the winter
[9:10]was getting bit short of food anyway a fish as a protein
[9:15]Source was allowed on Fridays which accounts for the large number of
[9:18]Village fish ponds scattered around our country now that lent observance has
[9:24]a more flexible nature I think depending on people's different understandings of
[9:28]the value of a fix season of growing in faithfulness but discipline
[9:33]is still very much there not just in the abstinence from different
[9:38]foods but abstinence from other activities such as going to the cinema
[9:44]or watching television or eating in restaurants and alongside abstinence getting involved
[9:47]individually or within the community in a program of reading and learning
[9:53]as I've been seeing coming up on your screen here each year
[9:58]to make us aware of the needs of other people and the
[10:03]fact that our fasting and our learning is meant to be focused
[10:06]outwards towards the world our Bishop chooses two two Charities to be
[10:10]focal points of people's giving out to others this year they the
[10:17]Middle East emergency appeal supporting Partners in that region who are responding
[10:22]to all those affected in a humanitarian Way by that huge crisis
[10:26]there and then the trussle trust which helps vulnerable families and those
[10:32]in need with food banks in this area now as we draw
[10:38]nearer to Easter lent increases its impact and we begin to think
[10:44]more sharply about how the message of Jesus uncompromisingly critical of the
[10:51]way that power oppresses the poor LED inevitably to his coming into
[10:56]conflict with authority and about his faith fness to God as his
[11:03]inspiration and strength I think this year it's very good that the
[11:08]holy seasons of Ramadan and ID and lent and Easter overlap with
[11:12]each other so closely before I finish and I thank you for
[11:16]listening to me I just want to take a personal moment to
[11:21]thank you for what I know has been your support in prayers
[11:24]offered to me this year after the death of my dear wife
[11:30]Jane and to share with you in our common hope in the
[11:35]loving and the lasting care of God who holds us all together
[11:41]always in life thank you thank you Canon David for those um
[12:03]beautiful words promoting uh the importance of unity of people of Faith
[12:10]uh and for some of those comparisons that you drew between lent
[12:15]and Ramadan which as you say have fallen quite close together this
[12:17]this year I'd now like to invite to speak on the lady's
[12:25]side Reverend Samantha duddles who is the team Vicor at St Nicholas
[12:28]church in Portsmouth once again can I ask all the to welcome
[12:32]her with a loud it's done well done oh dear noice salum
[12:59]I'd like to thank shik Fel so much for the privilege of
[13:04]inviting me to give you a short talk today it is a
[13:09]pleasure and it is a pleasure to see you again maybe for
[13:13]the second time some of you and to recognize you and to
[13:16]get to know you just a moment ago you wouldn't believe that
[13:21]the place was full of children running around because they're now coloring
[13:26]and drawing and there were some children who came to speak to
[13:28]me um we just talked about religious education in schools and that
[13:33]will give you a bit of a hint about who I am
[13:36]and what I do as well as being a team Vicor and
[13:40]a chaplain to Portsmouth um city of Portsmouth College I also have
[13:44]two children of my own who are now grown up and I
[13:49]am the chair of the standing advisory committee for Religious Education in
[13:54]Portsmouth I have this very special role and I'm very proud of
[14:01]the work we do we monitor schools religious education in the city
[14:05]and we listen and look out for arri and how it's being
[14:12]taught and also opportunities to do this kind of thing this Interfaith
[14:19]kind of thing so shik fazzil asked me if I would answer
[14:23]a question he said would I talk about my personal message on
[14:31]the importance and benefit of such events as these and my answer
[14:35]to you shake Fazil is I'll do my best as a Christian
[14:41]priest in the Anglican church and as chair of Sacre the most
[14:46]significant and important thing I think is we should do together is
[14:50]model the development of good relationships with members of other Faith communities
[14:58]I do this in a way that's true to myself I hope
[15:03]that you find me deeply respectful and that as we work together
[15:06]as brothers and sisters in the wider community that we will make
[15:13]a difference I've got three short um examples of my work which
[15:18]hope will kind of bring to light and bring to life the
[15:21]importance and why I think it's so important that we get to
[15:27]know each other well so I've said I'm a mother the first
[15:29]one is about my son he is 24 and is training to
[15:34]be a design technology teacher in Southampton last Sunday I had the
[15:39]pleasure of going to church with him he's not been to church
[15:45]since he was very very little he said yes Mom I'm going
[15:47]to come with you and I went to the church where I
[15:51]became a mom and I stood with other moms after the service
[15:56]and we talked now what was interesting and I didn't realize is
[16:00]that my son went to school the next day and told his
[16:03]colleagues about going to church he found himself in the situation where
[16:10]he was explaining the hierarchy of the Church of England and for
[16:14]some reason he said but my mom doesn't just do that my
[16:21]mom works with the Muslim Community in Portsmouth what was really interesting
[16:25]from his conversation is his colleague said said do they get on
[16:32]that question of how can a Muslim and a Christian possibly talk
[16:38]together now I think that was a really important response that we
[16:46]hear because it is important that it is seen and that it
[16:49]is heard that yes we do get on and we get on
[16:55]far better than people would expect this common the conversation demonstrates something
[17:01]about the importance of mutual engagement but also the understanding we have
[17:07]that the wider Community hasn't caught up with us yet so I've
[17:13]also been involved with supporting schools as a Chaplain and I don't
[17:21]visit Charter Academy now but in the past I did and in
[17:24]2019 I was invited by the senior leadership team of the school
[17:30]because they were having a problem with a year group and the
[17:32]problem was it wasn't down to one particular Faith group but none
[17:36]of them were getting on and to the point where respect had
[17:40]gone and harm was being done so I said I'll do my
[17:46]best and I went to meet with the Imam of the jamy
[17:51]mosque who was mui Udin who's moved to Manchester and we had
[17:56]a conversation we planned an assembly and we took that assem assembly
[18:01]together the most significant and important moment I think was when we
[18:06]met outside the school gate at lunchtime and we walked through the
[18:10]gate together talking listening responding and modeling what it means to be
[18:17]respectful of each other and quite frankly to show that we're friends
[18:23]the Muslim children who were in that assembly it was a special
[18:30]moment moment for them because they got to say hello to their
[18:33]Imam in school and they all queued up to see him before
[18:39]they left for me that was a profoundly wonderful moment that moment
[18:44]of connection and identity coming out into the four for everyone to
[18:48]see and those students well they still stopped me in the street
[18:52]now they're much older some of them are at sixth form college
[18:57]and say about that day and how much they valued it my
[19:03]third and final example is my most recent experience um I am
[19:09]chaplain to the city of Portsmouth college and yesterday I was at
[19:16]the Tangier Road campus which is the sixth form College I'm working
[19:20]with the college to make sure that there is some designated spaces
[19:24]during Ramadan for prayer so that students who want to pray PR
[19:32]in a safe secure space can do that in their daily routine
[19:36]because as we get older I've noticed that that's a really important
[19:42]of part of Ramadan at school and the school day and also
[19:49]the Fe College day I had two surprises yesterday and one of
[19:53]them occurred just now in a conversation you'll hear it those who
[19:56]are talking to me so yesterday I came across some Muslim girls
[20:02]I don't know them very well I know the hybrid campus students
[20:05]far better and we started talking and I said I'm going to
[20:12]come here this evening and I've been invited to be a guest
[20:15]speaker now the girls looked at me they saw the scarf around
[20:21]my neck but not the dog collar and one girl said to
[20:25]me are you a Muslim wow wow somebody just asked me a
[20:31]moment ago are you a Muslim wow something happening to see beyond
[20:40]to see further something about Mutual acceptance I said no I'm not
[20:47]a Muslim but I feel so privileged that that question was asked
[20:51]I'm a Christian priest that Revelation to them was really important I
[20:57]also saw a young young girl yesterday who I first met when
[21:03]she was in year seven at school I remember her first day
[21:06]at school and I remember our first conversation together and now she's
[21:11]a young lady studying at city of Portsmouth college for her a
[21:16]levels she saw me down the corridor and she saw me from
[21:24]far away and when you see somebody you know from far away
[21:26]that you care about what happens well she came running up to
[21:33]me and put her arms around me and said hello Sam for
[21:38]me that moment is extra special we've gone beyond I'm a Christian
[21:48]she's a Muslim we've gone beyond the kind of hello you know
[21:52]who are you how do you present your faith to trust and
[21:57]Humanity so my personal takeaway message is that flow flow from me
[22:05]coming in here sharing my stories with you which is a privilege
[22:08]and thank you so much for listening to me that flow of
[22:12]relationship in a two way flowing in and then flowing out into
[22:21]the community the Ebon flow of modeling trust good relationships and being
[22:26]confident to get others involved because at the end of the day
[22:33]it's all about the sovereignty of God to me and anybody who
[22:36]wants to talk about that whoever we are I would be delighted
[22:41]to have that conversation so we need to find ways to challenge
[22:46]people's perceptions just like my son did accidentally and assumptions in a
[22:53]positive way so that we can keep building bigger Community together than
[22:58]thank you so much thank you so much uh Reverend Sam uh
[23:17]it's it's a pleasure to have you once again at the El
[23:20]mati Center uh and it's lovely to hear from you such a
[23:26]a wonderful example of um you know someone who's so actively engaged
[23:30]in Interfaith work um and a real example that yes Muslims and
[23:33]Christians do get on well together um so thank you lovely to
[23:39]hear from you this evening um I'd like to Now call upon
[23:41]the Reverend Canon James McCoy the dean of the St John's Catholic
[23:45]cathedral in Portsmouth once again can I ask all the m to
[23:50]join me in reciting a loud Muhammed Muhammad thank you very much
[24:11]thank you very much for your welcome I'm very grateful to shik
[24:14]fle for the invitation to speak this evening on behalf of the
[24:21]Catholic Christian Community in the Portsmith area at today's event to Mark
[24:28]the beginning of your holy month of Ramadan I bring with me
[24:33]greetings from Philip Egan the bishop of the Catholic dasis of Portsmouth
[24:36]he regrets not being able to attend this event due to a
[24:43]prior engagement and Bishop Philip asked me to express his appreciation of
[24:49]the invitation that was extended to him and his complete support for
[24:53]the work of interreligious dialogue and his invocation of God's blessing on
[24:58]this very important task I believe that events such as these can
[25:05]only help to build up fraternal relations among the followers of Islam
[25:11]and Christianity and through dialogue and encounter without in any way renouncing
[25:19]that which we each hold to be true we can grow in
[25:25]mutual esteem and recognition of the common Humanity which in Us in
[25:31]particular Christians and Muslims in the words of the message issued today
[25:35]by the Vatican decaster for interreligious dialogue to Mark the beginning of
[25:42]this month of Ramadan we're both called to quote extinguish the fire
[25:47]of war and to light the candle of peace I was interested
[25:55]to read in an email sent earlier this week by shik Fel
[25:57]to how the timing of Ramadan each year depends on the lunar
[26:04]calendar and therefore moves through the different seasons of the Year this
[26:09]is because suu does the season of Lent which Christians are currently
[26:14]living not throughout the seasons of the year but it as as
[26:19]Ken David has already mentioned the timing of Lent varies during the
[26:26]Spring season and as you heard from can and David the English
[26:30]word lent comes from an Old English verb lengthen which means to
[26:35]lengthen so therefore it Springtime because it's a reference to the increasing
[26:41]amount of daylight at this time of year in the northern hemisphere
[26:45]so it's a time of lengthening of daylight therefore it's called lent
[26:53]lent however unlike Ramadan doesn't move beyond the spring season season this
[27:00]is because its timing depends on the Feast of Easter the celebration
[27:06]for Christians of the death and resurrection of Jesus the first Christians
[27:13]celebrated what Christians I call Easter at the same time as the
[27:18]Jews celebrate the Passover feast on the 14th day of their month
[27:24]of Nissan but since at least 150 ad so in the very
[27:29]early days of Christianity Easter has been celebrated at least in the
[27:33]western Catholic tradition on the first Sunday on or after the first
[27:42]full moon after the Spring Equinox the 21st of March it's quite
[27:47]complex the first Sunday which falls on or after the first full
[27:51]moon after the Spring Equinox so Easter Sunday can fall at any
[27:58]time in the Solar calendar between the 22nd of March and the
[28:02]25th of April so quite in terms of the Year quite a
[28:07]small range of time and this year Easter Sunday we celebrate on
[28:11]the 31st of March and the season of Lent lasts for 40
[28:16]days excluding Sundays our holy day and so this means that the
[28:24]season begins on the Wednesday 6 and 1/2 weeks before Easter Sunday
[28:27]and and this Wednesday in the Catholic tradition and in the tradition
[28:30]of some other Christians is called Ash Wednesday and that's because of
[28:38]the practice of imposing ashes as a sign of repentance usually on
[28:42]our forehead to wear ashes on our forehead and it's imposed with
[28:47]words like remember that you are dust and onto dust you shall
[28:52]return or repent and believe in the gospel so the focus of
[29:00]Lent first and foremost is one of repentance of turning again to
[29:05]God of reorientating my life and the 40 days of Lent mirror
[29:12]the 40 days spent by Jesus in the desert fasting when he
[29:16]prayed and was tempted by the devil Catholics are encouraged to focus
[29:22]their lent and practice in three areas or what we call pillars
[29:29]and these are prayer fasting or self-denial and acts of Charity that's
[29:35]left up to us as individuals to decide how we wish to
[29:38]engage in these particular areas and Ash Wednesday and Good Friday which
[29:45]is the Friday before Easter on which we Mark the crucifixion and
[29:51]death of Jesus are fast days so we are far fewer fast
[29:53]days than you'd have during Ramadan but in these fast days we
[30:00]we take one meal and one snack only and also on Fridays
[30:06]throughout the year but particularly in Lent we abstain from eating meat
[30:09]or if one's a vegetarian and therefore always abstains from eating meat
[30:13]we abstain from meeting something else the important thing for Christians about
[30:20]lent is whatever one does in this holy season it's not an
[30:26]end in itself all lent and practice have or should have as
[30:32]their objective having a greater sense of the sovereignty of God of
[30:37]my own sinfulness in comparison to that my need for God's mercy
[30:43]repentance and a greater sense of my need to live in solidarity
[30:51]and fraternity with everyone irrespective of their religion whether they have a
[30:54]religion at all so my prayer as a Christian in this season
[30:59]of Lent for you dear Muslim brothers and sisters in your sea
[31:04]holy season of Ramadan is it for each of us in our
[31:06]own way we can grow in a relationship a deeper relationship with
[31:10]God who is one who is all holy and who is full
[31:16]of mercy and compassion thank you thank you uh Canon James McCauley
[31:34]it's really interesting to hear he's speaking about the importance of interreligious
[31:39]dialogue acknowledging our common Humanity um and I would say also aspects
[31:45]of our theology that align um you spoke about lent as a
[31:51]time of uh repentance uh and it's interesting that the month of
[31:56]Ramadan itself from the Islamic tradition the word Ramadan is from an
[32:00]Arabic word which means to Scorch and this is referring to scorching
[32:04]away of the sins during this holy month uh and so uh
[32:09]through such interreligious dialogue I'm sure we can uncover many many more
[32:14]areas of shared commonality in our Humanity in our Theology and in
[32:22]our practices I'd like to Now call upon fasu to share a
[32:25]few words with us can we please all welcome sheh with muhamad
[32:43]Muhammad ald I begin in the name of almighty God the most
[33:11]compassionate the most merciful and I pray to almighty God to send
[33:15]his choices salutations and peace and blessings upon the prophet Muhammad and
[33:21]His holy preny I greet you all my dear friends Elders of
[33:28]the community and members of my congregation salum peace be upon you
[33:33]all this evening my dear friends is indeed a special occasion for
[33:41]we have put into practice the teaching of the great prophet Jesus
[33:48]and the prophet Muhammad Mustafa Sall alai wasallam muhami Muhammad who are
[33:57]known to be hospitable who are known to be sharing meals and
[34:01]this is what we put into practice of breaking bread together and
[34:07]sharing the meal I would like to thank you all my dear
[34:09]friends and guests for honoring our invitation and give us this opportunity
[34:15]to be able to share the blessings of the fourth day of
[34:19]our fast of the month of Ramadan in this environment of being
[34:23]able to be together I truly hope that following the delicious ifar
[34:31]which was an Iranian delicacy today and we have varieties of different
[34:37]Delicacies being served that you continue enjoying the joyful uplifted and blessed
[34:44]evening today with members of my congregation both young and old men
[34:49]and women most of all I truly hope that you are enjoying
[34:53]the hospitality of ifar the dinner and the conversation and the chai
[35:00]which you Shar together for which I would like to thank members
[35:03]of my congregation for the hospitality in the tradition of our beloved
[35:07]prophet in which you have given for this is the message which
[35:13]the prophet Abraham was known as AB as the father of or
[35:16]the father of the host for welcoming guests which you have been
[35:21]to together for which we all deserve a reward Muhammad Muhammad Muhammad
[35:30]indeed March and April this year is a unique month with both
[35:35]the Christians and Muslim practicing spiritual discipline at overlapping times as we
[35:39]have heard from our distinguished speakers prior to me with regards to
[35:47]the overlapping of the season of land Easter and the month of
[35:49]fasting and the celebration of ID coinciding in this moment of life
[35:55]for us as Muslims month of Ramadan is indeed a unique landmark
[36:01]in our life in the timeline of our lives and I would
[36:04]like to share with you two distinct impacts that it has on
[36:11]our lives one is we find that almighty God in the worse
[36:14]of the chapter Al bakar the second chapter of the Quran mentions
[36:19]to us with regards to the revelation of the Quran where almighty
[36:23]God tells us that this month of Ramadan is the month in
[36:32]which the Quran was revealed and what is the purpose of the
[36:36]Quran again we are told that the Quran is a guide for
[36:47]Humanity one which gives clear proofs and guidance so in whatever circumstances
[36:54]one is just like for fellow Christian who would refer to guidance
[37:02]from the Bible or for the Jew who would refer to the
[37:04]Torah for the Bible for us the Quran is a fan a
[37:09]Criterion a reference point for us to refer to so that it
[37:12]distinguishes for us that which is of the guide and that which
[37:18]is going to give us the greatest blessings in gaining the closeness
[37:22]to almighty God and we find that the teachings of the Quran
[37:26]is one which is full of guiding us towards Mercy compassion being
[37:35]just kind fair and peaceful for these are the names of almighty
[37:40]God when God is called Al Rahman Al Rim the most beneficient
[37:44]the most merciful the one who is the one who most peaceful
[37:48]as Salam and the one who is the cherisher the nourisher of
[37:54]everything which is in the universe this is the the first impact
[37:59]which the month of Ramadan has for me with regards to the
[38:01]month being for the revelation of the Quran the second impact with
[38:07]the month of Ramadan has for me is with regards to the
[38:11]prescription of fasting for we find that fasting for me is not
[38:16]just refraining from nullifiers of the fast especially staying away from food
[38:23]and water from the time before Dawn to after sunset in order
[38:27]to seek Divine pleasure but it is also nullifying is also abstaining
[38:31]from other things which take me far away from the pleasure the
[38:35]consciousness of God and for we find that there is a greater
[38:43]essential purpose of fasting than just refraining from food and water and
[38:48]some of these have been variably cover covered within the two distinguish
[38:52]speeches before me within the three distinguished speeches before me so I
[38:58]will take a moment to share with you excepts from a poem
[39:05]by the greatest Mystic molana jalaludin roomi a 13th century Mystic from
[39:12]Turkish and Persia who in a beautiful poem mentions to us the
[39:16]purpose of fasting I'll just quote an extract from there where we
[39:19]able to capture the purpose of fasting molana jalad RI says when
[39:25]you are full of food and drink then an ugly metal statue
[39:33]still sits where your spirit should be sitting when you fast good
[39:39]habits gather like friends who want to help and these are Traditions
[39:43]which resonate with what the previous speakers have been mentioning that there
[39:48]is a greater and outward purpose for fasting than just that individual
[39:54]practice of refraining from the nullifiers of fast what a Prof message
[39:58]does almighty God give us into the Quran with regards to the
[40:04]purpose of fasting when Almighty Allah after prescribing for Muslims the Believers
[40:07]the obligation of fasting mentions the reason of fasting where he says
[40:13]so that you may be able to derive that good God Consciousness
[40:20]so that you may be able to come closer towards guarding yourselves
[40:25]towards attaining the pleasure of almighty God and and this is what
[40:29]molana Jalin RI Capt captures in his poem over here the message
[40:33]of fasting for us as Muslims dear friends and members of the
[40:38]congregation in the Jumba today in the Friday sermon today in the
[40:45]Friday service today the message which I was trying to carry out
[40:48]to the congregation is that this month of Ramadan which we are
[40:51]witnessing in order in addition to celebrating and appreciating with gratitude the
[40:58]revelation of the Quran during this month of Ramadan and in addition
[41:02]to practicing the obligation of fasting during this month of Ramadan so
[41:07]that we may develop God Consciousness to come closer to almighty God
[41:13]yet still the message which I was carrying out to the congregation
[41:17]and Advising myself is that this Ramadan the year 2024 the Gregorian
[41:22]calendar or the 1445 for the Islamic calendar is indeed one of
[41:30]the hardest and the toughest which I have ever experienced in my
[41:32]life is it because you may be wondering why is this current
[41:38]month of Ramadan hardest and toughest for me is it because of
[41:42]remaining away from food and water for a number of hours is
[41:47]it because I'll be required to pray additional prayers and additional recitation
[41:53]of the Quran is it because I will be required to keep
[41:57]away from other social media platforms as part of my practices in
[42:01]the month of Ramadan no my dear friends no members of the
[42:05]congregations it is not because of this reason it's not remaining away
[42:10]from food which is making this experience Ramadan to be difficult for
[42:14]me it's not because the additional devotions of the recitation of the
[42:18]Quran and the additional devotion of the recitations of the recommended prayers
[42:22]in this month of Ramadan which is making this month of Ramadan
[42:25]difficult for me it is because having broken my fast for the
[42:31]last 3 days when I had the best of the cooks the
[42:37]best of the food served on our table when we had the
[42:41]best of the recipes served on our table today what comes to
[42:44]my mind is the children who had empty pots the sound of
[42:51]those empty pots queuing in line to be able to dish soap
[42:53]which is just a mixture of water and lentil beans when I
[42:59]was meeting the children in the MOs today with smiles they were
[43:02]looking at me and what was coming to my mind is the
[43:06]children who are hanging to the mother's bosoms because they are terribly
[43:12]frightened hearing the sound of worms around them what comes to mind
[43:18]is the mothers who are seeing their children dying left helpless they
[43:24]cannot do anything because of the famine which has been osed Ed
[43:29]upon them according to the UNICEF we can see the reports telling
[43:35]us that 90% of children in Gaza are experiencing severe P forty
[43:40]when we participated in Rose training together in saying our prayers today
[43:46]what came to mind is in these moments we have people from
[43:52]both faiths from the Christian faith and from the Muslim faith who
[43:55]are kneeling down to God in places that they were their homes
[44:02]in places which were their mosques in places which were their churches
[44:06]they no longer fit to be called as churches or mosque or
[44:09]homes because all of that is in trouble this is the state
[44:15]of a world today this is why I tell you this month
[44:18]of Ramadan is indeed a very difficult and a harsh experience for
[44:24]me my dear brothers and sisters at the same time we know
[44:34]that all of this which are mentioning to you is being relayed
[44:38]live on television to us just like one would be seeing the
[44:43]plays in our televisions one would be seeing the series in our
[44:50]televisions what is now being fed to us is human genocide being
[44:52]carried out by human beings around the world and we see it
[44:58]in our screen as a Muslim living in the UK these are
[45:04]very difficult moments some of you know me from the time when
[45:10]I took in this very honorous responsibility as the Imam of the
[45:13]Muslim Community in the south of this country I ask myself that
[45:20]I look very similar I think very similar I behave very similar
[45:27]to the people whose lives we are seeing lives suffering the genocide
[45:32]over there and it makes me feel frightened that of a community
[45:39]of a people of a tradition who are very similar who think
[45:44]very similar who behave very similar who have the similar ways of
[45:49]worship it makes me feel frightened as a Muslim in the UK
[45:54]it makes me feel very frightened when you hear the leaders even
[45:59]now redefining the meaning of extremism it makes me feel frightened when
[46:05]we feel when we see that more oxygen is given more gaslighting
[46:11]is being done by leaders giving anti-muslim pronouncements as a result of
[46:20]trying to get political mileage in their various positions of responsibility in
[46:27]these moments I find myself profoundly sad and I consider the state
[46:35]of our world and I do not know what to do my
[46:36]crying is not going to be enough my saying is not going
[46:43]to be enough just like the child in Gaza who kneels down
[46:48]who bows down despite the difficult challenge with the child faces despite
[46:53]that mother who sees that there is no way of being able
[47:01]to make the child survive yet the mother says indeed Allah God
[47:08]is sufficient for me and he is my best Guardian this is
[47:13]the only soless which I have and this is the message which
[47:19]you as Leaders of faith my dear friends have given that together
[47:23]prayer is a powerful weapon prayer is a weapon of the prophets
[47:29]the prophets faced challenging and difficult times the only we which they
[47:34]had was seeking prayers and intercession to almighty God this is where
[47:40]I stand in front of you as a human being it is
[47:44]not a matter of is the Muslims who are dying it's not
[47:49]a matter of is the church is the mosques which are being
[47:55]Destro which are being destroyed it's a matter of even Christians innocent
[48:01]Christians going about their daily rituals in the land where the noble
[48:08]Prophet Jesus traded even they too are victims of this genocide which
[48:12]is being carried out let me tell you let's not talk in
[48:15]terms of Faith it's not about Christianity it's not about Islam it's
[48:19]not about faith it's about Humanity it calls upon us to be
[48:29]human and this is where I say that these moments of Lent
[48:34]these moments of Ramadan let us all one and all be at
[48:40]least human within ourselves let us all be side to side by
[48:45]with each other we do need each other in these challenging moments
[48:49]and we can see for ourselves what the leaders are utilizing politics
[48:55]to their own advantage but it is only the voice of Faith
[49:01]which will have an everlasting impact I pray that our friendship as
[49:08]people of Faith as human beings which is very important is one
[49:14]that draws Us close towards tawa consciousness of God is one which
[49:20]challenges each and every one of us in our friendship in at
[49:27]least showing that concern as human beings for love for each other
[49:30]the way we would ask ourselves what would Jesus do in a
[49:34]situation like today what would the prophet Muhammad do in a situation
[49:41]like today in addition to utilizing the strong weapon of prayers let
[49:47]us continue supporting each other in remaining steadfast in in faith so
[49:53]that our generation both from our Rel I faith will inshallah God
[50:02]willing will develop commitment steadfastness and resilience towards faith in this land
[50:10]of the United Kingdom with this I extend my deepest gratitude to
[50:14]one and all of you especially to all of our friends and
[50:20]I request you remember the people who are suffering from calamities in
[50:24]all parts of the world and especially remember to pray for your
[50:29]brothers in faith from the Muslim Community in these challenging times which
[50:34]are going through May the choicest blessings of God peace and blessings
[50:41]be upon one and all of you thank you very much thank
[50:58]you so much she f abas for a stark reminder that whilst
[51:05]uh we are living in Comfort our brothers and sisters are living
[51:10]in very different circumstances and that part of our duty as people
[51:14]of faith is that we do not forget their plight but that
[51:19]rather we must turn to God In Prayer based on our common
[51:25]Humanity I'd like to once again thank all of our guests who
[51:33]have attended this evening as well as Those whom we have heard

[52:33]each one of you for honoring us with your presence the holy
[52:38]prophet peace and blessings be upon Him shared a special bond with
[52:42]the Christians of his time it says in chapter 5ah ma in
[52:47]the Holy Quran and surely you will find the nearest of them
[52:50]in affection to the faithful to be those who say we are
[52:56]Christians that is because there are priests and monks among them and
[53:00]because they are not arrogant from this verse the closeness between the
[53:05]Muslims and Christians at the time of the Prophet is clear and
[53:08]alhamdulillah um thanks to Allah we at wesix jamat experience a similar
[53:15]bond with our Christian Brethren continuing the Sunnah and Legacy of our

[59:23]with aoud Muhammad Muhammad I just need the clicker yeah thank you
[59:34]so much respected Brothers respected sisters guests thank you so much for
[59:40]giving me the opportunity this Center has always been very um accommodating
[59:45]for Al and as you know Al social Care Foundation has been
[59:51]supporting um orphan children in Iraq Afghanistan and Ghana uh so thank
[59:56]you for giving us the opportunity um in I don't want to
[60:00]take too much of your time um but I think it's it's
[60:02]nice to share uh the progress of and also just a bit
[60:08]about um slideshow please okay so the uh the Ramadan campaign is
[60:16]focused on two main aspects it's nutritional Aid and medical support for
[60:19]our children uh in Iraq Afghanistan and Ghana so the campaign name
[60:24]is healing and mercy I want to share with you a very
[60:26]short video um which highlights the plights of the orphan children inshallah
[60:32]it works what if I could see a doctor when I'm sick
[60:44]what if I didn't have to miss school because I couldn't afford
[60:48]medicine what if my family could afford to eat more than once
[60:54]a day technical issues my only tests were at school what if
[60:56]I could afford the surgery I need what if we all had
[61:01]access to [Music] healthcare if you can rewind please brother what if
[61:07]I could see a doctor when I'm sick thank you what if
[61:11]I didn't have to miss school because I couldn't afford medicine what
[61:14]if my family could afford to eat more than once a day
[61:19]what if my only tests were at school what if I could
[61:22]afford the surgery I need what if we all had access to
[61:27]healthcare [Music] thank you for watching so vital vital Medical Aid and
[61:39]Healthcare um nutritional Aid is very important obviously for these children and
[61:45]it's it's real life um brothers and sisters this is our aims
[61:48]and goals for this campaign and inshallah we can make that happen
[61:50]with your with your help and support now the tagline our uh
[61:58]Campaign which is healing and mercy is it's de it comes from
[62:00]the um the verse of from the Holy Quran uh and we
[62:04]send down of the Quran which is healing and mercy for the
[62:06]Believers but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss so
[62:12]this is derived from the Holy Quran now as you know or
[62:16]you may have know Al social Care Foundation started in Iraq in
[62:20]2006 uh this is where the story started and by Under the
[62:23]instructions of Sam aliani um we have lifted so far 175,000 children
[62:29]completely out of poverty um we are now in Afghanistan and Ghana
[62:36]so it's not just Iraq the story started in Iraq but in
[62:39]we're expanding collectively alhamdulillah we've reached 100,000 children um and when I
[62:45]say 100,000 children I mean it's it's it's families as well we're
[62:49]supporting the children and their families it's means tested so there are
[62:52]dedicated casew workers to ensure that the family is doing well if
[62:56]they need any support and assistance we are there to help them
[62:59]every step of the way so meaning it's a comprehensive care system
[63:03]now all our uh procedures controls in terms of looking after the
[63:07]children and their families H it's done it's tailored each child is
[63:13]different as you know it's not one size fits all that's why
[63:15]we have dedicated case workers and we have the operational capabilities to
[63:19]ensure that each child and their family is cared for so just
[63:25]like I mentioned so we alhamdulillah we've reached Afghanistan we've reached Ghana
[63:30]it's um it's growing it's expanding um a lot more work is
[63:33]needed it's basic care in Afghanistan and Ghana however in Iraq is
[63:36]comprehensive and what we want to do is we want to duplicate
[63:40]that we want to do the succcess story of Iraq alhamdulillah over
[63:44]eight luminous star centers to provide this essential care we want to
[63:47]do do that in Afghanistan and Ghana so just to let you
[63:54]know obviously in Iraq 800,000 children face difficulties barriers and when I
[63:59]say barriers I'm talking about um we're talking about healthcare services so
[64:02]we've had a lot of uh children we've a lot of children
[64:06]who've got medical conditions and they require support and require help over
[64:10]3,000 um over 3,000 surgeries have been carried out inside Iraq um
[64:15]and over 500 in Afghanistan and Ghana so um We are continuing
[64:22]supporting the children uh Afghanistan as you know not a lot of
[64:24]it's not on the news as much but it's a a very
[64:27]very difficult and dire situation it's not just Healthcare challenges I mean
[64:31]half of the population is below the age of 18 I believe
[64:33]1.2 million orphan children um you know under the poverty line so
[64:39]it's very difficult as well in Afghanistan and um you know we're
[64:43]growing and expanding in that Ghana over 1.6 million um you know
[64:47]they lack access to basic health care so providing just very basic
[64:50]stuff they you know they don't have much of that so um
[64:53]inshallah um this is also with your help and support it's it's
[64:56]growing and expanding now I just wanted to share a very short
[65:02]story about Muhammad Muhammad is a young child he's a young um
[65:07]adult a young child actually not a young adult and um he's
[65:10]had several he's had a quadruple bypass surgery for his heart the
[65:15]first operation was unsuccessful leading to a deterioration in his condition alhamdulillah
[65:21]supported him um and alhamdulillah now he with the right cardiac specialist
[65:26]he's now um he's he's doing very well and um he's had
[65:31]another operation and it's Su it's been successful so it's it can
[65:35]happen with the right can support it can happen and alhamdulillah it
[65:39]is happening um now the clinics that we have in Iraq um
[65:44]we're talking about 121,000 children have been treated using these clinics um
[65:50]over surgical operations it says 2,600 I think we've hit the 3,500
[65:53]Mark now um so a lot of big major breakthrough is happening
[65:59]and it's expanding this Ramadan what we require support in is uh
[66:03]these packages that you see here on the screen so medication and
[66:05]treatment assist of devices um obviously a lot of our children they've
[66:12]they require special a special treatment when I say special they have
[66:16]disabilities um and they they require some um they require some help
[66:19]for that so these packages inshallah will will definitely Aid them um
[66:24]yes so in terms of packages nutritional Aid food packages 37,000 we've
[66:30]made a we've made a pledge and in it's it's going ahead
[66:34]um 37,000 often children are struggling and we are supplying them with
[66:40]much needed care a very short video about Ghana I'd like to
[66:44]play my colleagues with there very [Music] recently 3 million people [Music]
[67:00]M diseases infections health risks 23% have access to sanitation so this
[67:38]is a very short clip of my colleagues when they visited Ghana
[67:42]uh very difficult as you can see from the stats um inshallah
[67:44]we'll be able to help and support them this uh this Ramadan
[67:49]uh the food baskets nutritional Aid just like I mentioned when we
[67:52]say nutritional Aid we're giving them full so it's over 16 different
[67:55]products that they receive so the family is receiving high quality um
[68:00]food uh for them to keep going during this month of Ramadan
[68:04]as you all know we have AA by Sam Alan his Eminence
[68:09]um this AA comes with great responsibility um it's uh we we
[68:15]have to have and we do have the control internal control procedures
[68:18]to ensure that our operations um everyone on the ground is working
