[0:01][Music] hmm [Music] my [Music] my [Music] my [Music] [Music] [Music] my
[3:09][Music] so [Music] is muhammad thank you everyone for joining us in
[5:56]this wonderful windy evening for our weekly myc friday night programs so
[6:07]the topic of tonight as you are already aware was worded in
[6:16]this way does halal music exist yes or no now the way
[6:21]that the question has been set up shows you that we are
[6:28]already presupposing that music is haram that the general law is that
[6:36]music is haram so then the next question is well is there
[6:42]any exception are there any times any scenarios any circumstances where music
[6:47]would be okay so just the wording of the question shows you
[6:51]that we have already presumed that music is haram so the next
[6:58]question is are there any exceptions now is this wording is this
[7:04]analogy even correct to begin with yes or no you see there
[7:08]are two opinions between our scholars the first opinion that our scholars
[7:14]believe is that music is haram that is the general law music
[7:22]in general is haram however they may there may be certain exceptions
[7:28]here or there but the general rule is that music is haram
[7:33]so then we would have to try to find certain exceptions that's
[7:38]the first opinion that's how some scholars looked at the topic of
[7:42]music but then there's a second group of scholars who said no
[7:48]this is not right who said that music is haram and then
[7:53]we have to come and find exceptions the second set of scholars
[7:57]believe that there are two types of music there's halal music and
[8:01]there's haram music so the wording of this entire lecture would not
[8:06]be correct based on the second opinion does halal music exist there's
[8:10]halal music music we can't say that music is haram except no
[8:16]there's halal in that there's haram it's like someone that says does
[8:21]halal food exist there's halal food and there's haram food we don't
[8:24]have a general law that says food is haram and then there
[8:27]are some exceptions no there's two types of food there's halal food
[8:31]and there's haram food so now let's go through these two different
[8:36]opinions so that we can understand what types of music are halal
[8:42]and what types of music are so the first opinion of our
[8:48]scholars this opinion used to be the majority opinion centuries ago now
[8:52]it's become the minority opinion these scholars believe that all types of
[8:59]music and singing is haram once again these scholars mention that all
[9:06]types of singing and music is haram so remember this is not
[9:11]a black and white issue music it's very complicated there's a lot
[9:15]of disagreement between scholars so i'm trying to present the different views
[9:19]and their reasoning and arguments so these scholars state that music is
[9:27]haram all types if there was any halal then the burden is
[9:31]on you you have to try to prove that this type of
[9:36]music is but the general law the general principle is music and
[9:42]songs are haram now what's their reasoning when they said that all
[9:51]music and all singing is haram so they go back to the
[9:56]quran and the traditions of they say when we go back to
[10:00]the quran and the traditions of they ban two things number one
[10:05]they banned who knows what means there are blankets bans on singing
[10:16]in the quran and in the hadith they tell us based on
[10:24]this that's why we say all types of singing is haram so
[10:27]this is the first singing and then we'll come to the second
[10:31]band so where does allah or the imams or the prophet ban
[10:35]singing we'll start with the quran there are a couple of verses
[10:40]i'll only mention three these scholars state that the imams of ahlulbait
[10:48]have told us that in three instances the quran ban singing where
[10:52]the first instance is where allah subhanahu wa says allah says refrain
[11:02]from false speech what is false speech false speech this is a
[11:08]very broad meaning if i lie this is false speech blasphemy is
[11:13]false speech when trump opens his mouth this is false speech right
[11:17]so there's many types of false speech was asked about he was
[11:24]asked about singing you know what he said he said allah banned
[11:28]it in the quran so someone asked him where the imam recited
[11:32]this verse the imam said false speech includes singing the imam did
[11:39]not say this type of singing or that type of singing he
[11:44]said singing period he did not make any exceptions so a blanket
[11:50]ban from al-imam that the quran is what is banning the quran
[11:55]says refrain from false speech and imam islam says false speech includes
[12:00]singing is this clear it's a valid argument right so even though
[12:07]the quran didn't explicitly and clearly say singing but the imam says
[12:12]this is what god means the imams they know the quran better
[12:15]than everyone else they have the authority to explain the quran they
[12:21]have the authority to tell us what the quran means when god
[12:23]said this or god said that so this is the first verse
[12:28]that's why some scholars come out and say all types of singing
[12:32]is haram don't sing sometimes you're just walking and singing to yourself
[12:36]don't why because the quran bans it what types didn't say what
[12:42]types the quran just said singing that means every type of singing
[12:46]so this is the first verse now this is all the first
[12:50]opinion we'll go to the second opinion later on the second verse
[12:55]that the imams used to say this is speaking about which is
[13:02]singing is where allah says has been interpreted to mean amusement of
[13:19]speech any speech that is amusing or idle talk there are some
[13:26]people allah is condemning them and allah says these people i will
[13:29]punish in hell who the ones that pay for amusement of speech
[13:32]the ones that pay for idol talk now what does this verse
[13:38]mean amusement of speech idol talk this verse is not very clear
[13:41]right if i were to ask you what does this verse mean
[13:44]whoever pays for idle talk it's not a clear verse anytime we
[13:50]have a verse that's not clear what do we do we go
[13:53]back to the imams the imams they explain to us the meaning
[13:59]of these ambiguous allegorical verses so i found three hadiths they were
[14:08]all asked about this verse what does god mean by hadith amusing
[14:15]speech idol talk the imams all would say singing allah is condemning
[14:20]the one that pays for singing why because back then if you
[14:26]wanted someone you know to sing for you you'd have to rent
[14:31]someone you have to pay someone it was usually slaves they would
[14:33]bring a slave pay the slave or the owner of the slave
[14:38]and that slave would sing so whoever pays a singer allah is
[14:41]condemning that person why because singing is haram they didn't have radios
[14:45]they didn't have mp3 players iphone so if you wanted to listen
[14:49]to music you would have to listen to a live performance so
[14:51]this verse is saying it is haram to pay to listen to
[14:57]music so this would also mean listening to music is haram or
[15:01]else it doesn't make sense to say it's haram to pay for
[15:03]it but if you get it for free it's halal doesn't make
[15:07]sense right god is saying stay away from it so this is
[15:11]verse number two so number one remember the verse where allah subhanahu
[15:17]ta'ala spoke about false speech the imam said this is singing the
[15:21]second verse hadith amusing speech the imam said this is singing and
[15:25]once again he didn't put any ifs or buts he just said
[15:31]singing and the third verse that i'll mention is where allah subhanahu
[15:35]wa ta'ala says the believers have succeeded they are triumphant then describes
[15:45]the qualities of the believers number one they are the ones that
[15:52]have humility in their salah when they pray their hearts are humble
[15:56]they turn towards allah subhanahu ta'ala and then the next verse allah
[16:00]says the believer is the one that refrains from vain talk once
[16:08]again what is vain talk if i were to ask you what's
[16:13]vain talk i'll get 20 different answers some people may say gossip
[16:15]some people may say back buying some people will say just sitting
[16:19]and chatting and wasting time other people may say lying other he
[16:24]said vain talk in this verse includes singing so one of the
[16:31]qualities of a believer the imam says is that he does not
[16:36]listen to music he stays away from music he refrains from singing
[16:39]singing so these are three terms in the holy quran false speech
[16:50]idol talk or amusing speech and vain talk these three terms in
[16:58]the holy quran have been explained by the imams of ahlul beta
[17:01]mean singing so these they say the imam said singing is haram
[17:08]did they say this type of singing is haram or that type
[17:12]of singing no they said singing is so they understand that every
[17:17]type of song is is that clear why because they go back
[17:21]to the quran and the interpretation of the imams given about the
[17:27]quran any objections so far or does it sound like a good
[17:33]argument you have a counter a counter argument oh it's a good
[17:37]it's a good argument right so three verses in the quran that
[17:42]god is condemning people of doing certain things and the imams interpreted
[17:47]those things as being singing and the imam never made an exception
[17:50]he never said this type of singing that type of singing he
[17:53]just said singing so based on that every type of singing would
[17:57]be now this is from the quran and then we have direct
[18:01]hadith from the imam where they explicitly ban singing they condemn singing
[18:06]i'll read you a couple of hadiths the first hadith one of
[18:12]the companions of imam he says i asked him about singing what
[18:14]do you think about singing what did the imam say he said
[18:20]he said there is no good in it do not go near
[18:26]it so if there is a live singing show there's a live
[18:30]singer live musical performance the imam says do not go he's banning
[18:33]his followers from going and listening to music it's a clear cut
[18:38]tradition it's a very clear hadith from imam he does not say
[18:45]if it's this type it's halal if it's that type it's hara
[18:48]hadith number two he says he says a house where singing is
[18:59]played where people sing where someone sings a house that contains songs
[19:04]and singings and someone is singing this house the imam says is
[19:09]on the brink of a disaster meaning allah will not protect the
[19:13]people of that house from calamities from disasters and from problems so
[19:20]that music or singing that is being played in the house will
[19:23]be the source of a disaster that will happen in your house
[19:25]this is saying and then he said and the duas of the
[19:34]people of that house will never be answered if i am listening
[19:38]to songs in my house my dua will not be answered the
[19:42]dua of the people of that house will not be answered many
[19:44]times we ask why isn't my dua being answered i pray to
[19:49]god but he's not giving me what i want i'm just listening
[19:51]to music before that and then i turn to allah and and
[19:56]i ask him obviously allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is not going to
[19:59]answer my dua based on this hadith he says because singing is
[20:02]one of those sins that trap your dua i mean forgive me
[20:13]of those sins that trap my that prevent my dua from reaching
[20:18]you and thus my dua is never answered and imam al-sadiq says
[20:20]one of the sins that prevents your dua from being accepted is
[20:26]singing and then he says a house where songs are being listened
[20:30]to the imam says angels will not enter that house and when
[20:35]angels don't enter a house who enters the house the shaytan correct
[20:40]it's either the shaytan is in your house or it's the angels
[20:44]do you want the angels to be in your house or the
[20:47]shaytan of course the angels because the angels bring their blessings with
[20:51]them to your house they bring all the barakat of allah subhanahu
[20:57]wa ta'ala to your house while the devils when they enter your
[21:00]house it's exactly the opposite so this is the second hadith from
[21:03]imam um he speaks about singing and the harmful consequences of singing
[21:09]in this way he didn't say this type of singing or that
[21:12]type of singing he just said another hadith someone asked about singing
[21:21]he told him what do you think about singing is it the
[21:24]imam he said let me ask you a question he said if
[21:31]allah we're to divide truth and falsehood into two camps everything that
[21:35]is true and truthful is on this side and everything that is
[21:41]battling falsehood is on this side where would you put singing would
[21:46]you put it with the imams and the prophets and paradise and
[21:51]noble values and courage virtues or would you put on the other
[21:54]side what do you guys think look at the music industry today
[22:03]would you put it with truth or with falsehood anyone think we
[22:07]could put it with truth raise your hand if you think it's
[22:10]possible the music industry we could put it with the truth so
[22:16]this man this is exactly what he said he said i think
[22:20]it would go with falsehood the imam said there you have it
[22:22]you've answered your when you asked me as music as listening to
[22:28]songs you think about it do you think this is something that
[22:33]the prophets that the imams that the righteous people would do or
[22:37]its people of the dunya that worship that dunya would do there
[22:40]you have it sometimes brothers and sisters allah has given us the
[22:43]answer but we don't look for the answer through our minds because
[22:47]it's always we're thinking through our desires our neps our nephew wants
[22:52]to listen to music that's why we're always trying to find loopholes
[22:55]to make it halal but if we think about it quickly you
[22:58]realize that the music industry of today is not a it's not
[23:03]what's happening about and finally there's a hadith where he says he
[23:16]says listening to me and songs plants hypocrisy in your heart when
[23:22]you listen to music brothers and sisters do not think that this
[23:27]is just an innocent song that i'm listening to there's going to
[23:30]be a lot of damage that it does to your heart don't
[23:33]feel it in my heart i mean your spirit your nephs your
[23:35]spirituality and i'll speak about this more before i end in a
[23:39]couple of minutes inshaallah so these first they say we look at
[23:45]all these traditions all these verses the imams explicitly prohibits us from
[23:49]all types of songs we cannot find one hadith where the imam
[23:52]says you know what this type of music this type of singing
[23:57]is halal but that type is so based on this view every
[24:04]type of music every type of singing is haram why because of
[24:09]the quran and the hadith of the imams of it so this
[24:14]is the first thing that the quran or the imams banned us
[24:18]from songs and then when we read these say there's another thing
[24:22]that they banned us from what is it musical instruments musical instruments
[24:28]have been banned by the prophet and the imams let me read
[24:31]you some traditions allah has sent me to do what to bring
[24:45]mercy to humanity this is what the quran says the prophet prophet
[24:55]muhammad allah the prophet says allah sent me as a mercy to
[25:08]humanity and then he says i have a duty allah has given
[25:12]me a mission what's my mission and so that i destroy musical
[25:21]instruments can you believe that the prophet is saying that one of
[25:29]my duties and missions when i was sent is to get rid
[25:33]of musical instruments so allah sent me to bring peace allah sent
[25:37]me to establish justice allah sent me for mercy and allah sent
[25:42]me so that i get rid of music instruments from the society
[25:46]so these are they say using musical instruments is haram any type
[25:51]of music is haram because the prophet is saying this we are
[25:54]just following the commandments of the prophet you have a question brother
[26:00]do you have a question are you just stretching you have a
[26:06]question yes go ahead what's your question raise your voice please i
[26:11]can't hear you can someone tell me what he's asking wait inshaallah
[26:16]i'll get to i'm just presenting the different opinions this is just
[26:20]the first opinion so this is one hadith another hadith from rasulullah
[26:25]he says he says i ban you if i'm a follower of
[26:33]prophet muhammad he says i ban you from two things number one
[26:36]as ziffin or as zephan which is what dancing do not dance
[26:40]the prophet says it is haram to dance number two when misma
[26:43]musical instruments stay away from them a third hadith says do you
[26:53]know who the first person to sing was he says it was
[27:00]a belief shaytaan the first person the first individual to ever sing
[27:03]on earth was iblis the shaytan the devil and the first person
[27:09]to use instruments to play music to make music was the shaytan
[27:14]when did that happen al-imam al-sadiq says when prophet adam died when
[27:20]he died shaytan went to his son cain and they were both
[27:28]so happy that adam died cain hated his father because his father
[27:32]favored habib he hated adam because he thought it was because of
[27:39]adam not his arrogance that he was kicked out of paradise so
[27:42]now they made a team after adam died and they wanted to
[27:45]celebrate the death of prophet adam they celebrated and imam muslim said
[27:52]he says invented musical instruments and they started to play music and
[27:59]sing in celebration of the death of prophet adam he says and
[28:02]then it became a custom and then it became a custom of
[28:10]evil wicked people to play music and play the instruments anytime they
[28:19]wanted to gloat at the death of someone you have to understand
[28:26]the history behind music brothers and sisters i know it's such a
[28:29]huge industry and so many of us love it but once you
[28:32]understand who made it who started it and for what reasons this
[28:37]is when you realize how dangerous it is and who's behind it
[28:40]so then the imam said after that he said so the use
[28:45]of musical ins that people enjoy today during the time of ramsay
[28:50]he says this is all from the shaytan he says anytime you
[28:53]see people using music musical instruments that they enjoy he says this
[28:59]is from the shaytan this was all the plan of the shaitaan
[29:03]so these first this group of ulama scholars they say once we
[29:08]look at all these traditions we can understand two things number one
[29:12]singing is always haram there is no exception why is there no
[29:18]exception because no exception has been mentioned it's always blanket bans by
[29:22]the prophet by the quran by the imams singing is haram the
[29:29]prophet says that using musical instruments is haram imam says it's from
[29:34]the shaytan so these they say all types of music and singing
[29:38]is there is is that clear their arguments are pretty sound they're
[29:44]pretty firm they make sense now this opinion used to be the
[29:52]majority opinion centuries ago now it's the minority opinion what's the main
[29:57]opinion of scholars today the opinion of scholars today has shifted somewhat
[30:03]most scholars contemporary malaya of today their opinion is a little different
[30:09]what's their opinion they say not all types of music and singing
[30:15]is haram they say we have two types of music there's halal
[30:20]music and singing and there is hara music and singing what are
[30:25]they going to do with all these traditions and all these verses
[30:29]that say singing is haram that say singing is from the shaitaan
[30:35]that say musical instruments are bad and it's from the invention of
[30:41]the shaitan so how are they getting this these say that you
[30:44]have to look at the context context is very important mothers and
[30:48]sisters yes did say singing and he didn't put any but or
[30:56]ifs but once you look at the context of these verses and
[31:01]of these traditions you will understand that not every type of singing
[31:05]and music was condemned by the imams and the prophets why this
[31:10]is their argument they say that now when you look at music
[31:14]music has become an art right it's become an art there's thousands
[31:19]of types of music evil people listen to music good people listen
[31:23]to music there's music people of the dunya there's music with you
[31:28]know themes about imams and bait so music has become an art
[31:33]that has so many types and genres during the time of the
[31:40]imams it wasn't like that music was an evil thing singing was
[31:47]always associated with evil rich people you know right now for example
[31:53]you know there are some games that only rich people you know
[31:57]rich people that are far away from allah subhanahu wa ta'ala only
[32:03]they play you know like i don't know i don't want to
[32:05]mention examples and maybe you know the example may not be but
[32:11]to my you know what i think is you know for example
[32:14]uh gambling poker i don't know you know there are certain games
[32:20]that usually a religious person doesn't play correct it's associated with people
[32:24]who are far from allah or not religious people of the dunya
[32:27]during the times of the imams this is the second group of
[32:32]ulama they're saying even though the imam would say singing is haram
[32:37]music is musical instruments but if you look at the context of
[32:40]these verses and of these hadiths you would understand that during the
[32:44]time of the imams there was no such thing as good singing
[32:49]singing and music was always associated with evil people wicked people people
[32:54]who worshiped the dunya and any time there was a gathering of
[32:59]where there was music where there was instruments and there was singing
[33:03]there was always alcohol with it there was always girls dancing with
[33:09]it there was always haram so it was a place where a
[33:11]religious person would never go to so when ali was asked about
[33:16]singing what type of singing was he asked the singing that the
[33:19]people were accustomed to that time even though he didn't say i
[33:24]mean this specific type of singing but the context leads us to
[33:30]that everyone knew singing during that time was usually for the rich
[33:34]it was usually for the people who worshipped the dunya that had
[33:36]nothing to do with allah subhanahu ta'ala so when the imams condemned
[33:40]either the instruments or either the songs it's because it always had
[33:47]a bad reputation songs singing and music had a bad reputation so
[33:53]when the imam banned singing these say they banned that type of
[33:58]singing that type of song that type of music not every type
[34:01]of music so based on that contemporary ulama they have given different
[34:10]interpretations and definitions of haram and halal music one opinion of our
[34:19]some of our ulama is any music that is associated with frivolous
[34:26]wasteful gatherings any music that is associated with frivolous wasteful gatherings gatherings
[34:36]of sin and gatherings that type of music is this is how
[34:43]many ulama today have defined halal music everything else if it's not
[34:51]associated with gatherings of the dunya gatherings of amusements gatherings of sin
[34:55]and disobedience and dunya then it's halal now let me ask you
[35:01]a question does this really solve the problem for us so if
[35:05]i if you ask me what type of music is halal and
[35:08]what type is haram i'll tell you if the music is associated
[35:12]with the people of the dunya then it's haram if not does
[35:15]that help you really much you're still not going to know what
[35:19]type of right it's a little confusing the definition itself is vague
[35:27]so that's why i'll try to guide you a bit so what
[35:32]types of music i think based on this criteria what type of
[35:37]music and singing is haram and what type is if you go
[35:42]to your merger he's not going to answer you based on the
[35:44]specific if you ask him rapist he's not going to answer he's
[35:48]not going to answer if you give him names of certain you
[35:55]know certain musicians entertainers and you can i listen they're not going
[35:59]to answer why first of all they don't want to listen to
[36:03]that second of all because they want you to make the judgment
[36:09]hadith remember truth on one side falsehood on another side the magi
[36:12]tells you you make the decision if you think this is appropriate
[36:19]music listen to it but if you think that this music is
[36:22]music that is associated with dunya far from allah people of the
[36:29]dunya people of sin then stay away from it so how do
[36:31]we which one is which we have to use our own judgment
[36:34]brothers and sisters so let me give you this is based on
[36:38]my analysis and my opinion of what they mean let me give
[36:44]you a couple examples of which types of music are hella any
[36:48]music that totally distracts you from reality you know sometimes certain types
[36:57]of music they completely distract you from such that you zone out
[37:00]and you start envisioning yourself and disneyland i don't know this is
[37:07]for the younger ones for the older ones you start envisioning yourself
[37:09]with some things i can't say in the mumbai this is the
[37:14]haram type of music any type of music that distracts you from
[37:18]reality this type is haram why because in reality this type of
[37:23]music is like a drug it drugs you and intoxicate you it's
[37:30]like alcohol and subhanallah there's even some studies that have proven that
[37:35]music can sometimes put you in a mindset that is similar to
[37:39]what to being drunk you know how when someone's drunk he's just
[37:43]completely a different world so happy doesn't know what's going on certain
[37:47]types of music this is what they do to you this is
[37:51]exactly what they do too it's like a drug it intoxicates your
[37:56]mind you start living in a fantasy life any type of music
[38:01]that makes you completely zone out it's haram brothers and sisters based
[38:06]on this interpretation of the marathon this is number one is that
[38:10]clear now you make the decision is this one of those types
[38:12]of music that makes me zone out and completely wander and completely
[38:17]destroyed from life and everything else or not number two any type
[38:25]of music that makes you a dance makes you want to get
[38:30]up and dance that has a specific beat to it this type
[38:33]of music i would based on my opinion from the interpretation of
[38:38]the ulama that i mentioned this would also be number three any
[38:45]type of music that triggers your desires and especially the intimate desire
[38:52]obviously this needs no more you know uh this needs no more
[39:01]uh saying anything this is obvious so any type of music that
[39:05]triggers that provokes that certain desire this is haram and this is
[39:10]a judgment that you can make you don't even need to tell
[39:12]you this you know and half of the music that's out there
[39:16]i think it does trigger that i think it does provoke the
[39:21]desires so this is all with the style with the tunes what
[39:25]about the lyrics this is also common sense i think you can
[39:29]all make this assessment and judgment any song that contains words lyrics
[39:35]that are inappropriate that are lewd that contain profanity violence and you
[39:45]know drinking alcohol uh promiscuity any of that immorality so if the
[39:51]lyrics contain any immorality then obviously you know that this is haram
[39:55]is that right so far five types of music that i have
[40:02]identified for you haram everything else is everything else is now does
[40:10]anyone want to add something else so this was based on my
[40:14]opinion of what the interpretation of the fatwa of the malaja is
[40:17]any music that is associated with frivolous wasteful gatherings of amusement and
[40:23]dunya and waste of time based on my opinion this is what
[40:26]they mean these five types once again let me quickly summarize music
[40:29]that completely distracts you such that you zone out music that makes
[40:35]you want to dance music that triggers your desires music that i'm
[40:39]sorry i forgot one of them uh the lyrics we said number
[40:43]four was the lyrics if it's inappropriate then this is also haram
[40:48]and number five music that is usually played in an immoral and
[40:55]corrupt environment think about this music where is this music music usually
[41:03]played is it played in a place of you know where angels
[41:07]would be present or know where shaytaan would be present i think
[41:09]you would also be able to make that distinction certain types of
[41:13]music you can tell you know this music belongs to bars it
[41:19]belongs to concerts it belongs to clubs it doesn't belong to a
[41:22]place where there are there are religious people there are angels there
[41:25]are holy people any type of music where you feel that this
[41:31]is not appropriate the rhythm the style i wouldn't listen to in
[41:35]front of you know either my parents or a scholar that type
[41:40]of music i would say is also so these are five types
[41:45]of music that i would say stay away from this is haram
[41:49]everything else is halal now someone would say say you do not
[41:51]leave anything else for us everything is haram now no there are
[41:55]some types of music for example this is also my opinion songs
[42:02]about you know your homeland about your country songs about family songs
[42:10]about meaningful ideas about values virtues national anthems these are all halal
[42:17]they're halal as long as the tune is appropriate so don't come
[42:21]and wrap me you know some some uh music about your homeland
[42:26]and how you love your village in a lot of lebanon so
[42:28]it's not just the lyrics that's the point i'm trying to say
[42:32]it's the lyr it's the lyrics that have to be appropriate and
[42:35]the tone the tone has to be a tone remember it doesn't
[42:38]trigger the desires it doesn't zone you out it doesn't you know
[42:43]uh it's not associated with people of the dunya and clubs and
[42:47]and concerts and just people that worship the dunya what else did
[42:52]we say the the uh some of the other criterias it doesn't
[42:56]make you want to dance so it's not just the lyrics so
[42:59]as long as there's a song the tone is appropriate and the
[43:05]it has a meaningful you know meaning has a purposeful meaning then
[43:10]this would be halal you know songs for kids i would say
[43:14]about alphabets about uh animals planets so on so forth this would
[43:19]be hello now you may say that based on this classification the
[43:26]majority of music is hara the majority of music today that we
[43:30]see on you know on youtube and wherever on your iphones the
[43:36]majority fall under the haram now if that's the case so be
[43:42]it but that doesn't mean that allah prohibited most types of music
[43:47]no this only proves that most people are going after the music
[43:50]there's a lot of halal types of music but unfortunately most singers
[43:55]they opt to choose the haram type of music that's why when
[43:59]you look at the the videos you know the music videos it's
[44:02]all inappropriate brothers and sisters it's all inappropriate you will rarely find
[44:07]a music video without woman dancing and sometimes there's money all over
[44:12]and guns and uh you know the the expensive cars as far
[44:18]as you know you can imagine something from subhanallah all so unfortunately
[44:24]the musicians of today and the singers they have opted to go
[44:28]after the music but that doesn't mean all types of music or
[44:32]there are halal types of music as long as it falls under
[44:36]one of those categories it doesn't they're one of those five things
[44:40]that i said it's halal now having said that there will still
[44:46]be some confusion some types of music we won't know so this
[44:49]is what people say brothers and sisters this is the golden rule
[44:53]there are going to be black areas certain songs everybody knows that
[44:59]it's going to be haram right i don't want to mention examples
[45:03]but you know certain examples of songs everyone reads alhamdulillah we can
[45:07]write this under the haram and then there is the white area
[45:12]there are certain types of music that everyone would agree or most
[45:15]people would agree it's like the ones the national anthems poems on
[45:19]songs about family about you know uh your country and and just
[45:25]values and virtues and so on so forth they may be boring
[45:26]yes we don't like to listen to them but this is the
[45:31]white area and then we will have what a gray area certain
[45:35]types of music will we where we don't know does it fall
[45:39]under those five things that i mentioned or not what do you
[45:42]do in the gray areas what do you think because i know
[45:48]some people will tell me well say it i don't know there's
[45:52]certain types of music i don't know is it music of the
[45:55]people of the dunya or is it not i don't know the
[45:58]legal brothers and sisters verdict is that if you don't know you're
[46:03]allowed to listen to it if you don't know if it's in
[46:06]the gray area many of you are thinking the opposite the legal
[46:10]i'm looking at just the legal aspect it is not haram to
[46:15]listen to a type of music that i'm not sure i asked
[46:19]i researched this type of music i'm not sure is it does
[46:21]it fall under those five times is it appropriate is it i
[46:25]don't know if you're still unsure undecide it's halal for you to
[46:27]do it why because there's a lot that says everything is haram
[46:30]until proven otherwise is that clear have fun everything is halal until
[46:37]proven otherwise i'm sorry everything is halal until proven otherwise so those
[46:45]gray areas legally technically it's not but however should you stay away
[46:51]from them absolutely everything that is you should do it right you
[46:55]can come out half naked for the guys in the street should
[46:58]you do that no you could come out wearing spongebob socks should
[47:02]you do that no so not everything that is halal brothers and
[47:05]sisters we should do it and as a general rule the imams
[47:10]tell us don't make it a habit to always indulge in the
[47:14]gray areas some people they say as long as it's black you
[47:18]know it's 100 i'll stay away from it but if it's not
[47:19]100 haram i'm not going to stay away from it from time
[47:25]to time that's okay but to make it a habit to always
[47:28]go after and seek and enjoy the gray areas the imam say
[47:34]this is dangerous why they say because eventually if you make it
[47:38]a habit to always come close to the haram eventually you will
[47:42]cross the line the imams in fact give us an example they
[47:46]say it's like someone that's walking right on the edge of the
[47:48]cliff he says as long as i'm on the cliff i'll walk
[47:52]are you gonna walk the whole time on the edge no because
[47:56]eventually you may slip and fall so technically when you're walking on
[47:59]the edge of the cliff there's nothing wrong with that you're still
[48:03]on the cliff but when you do it again and again and
[48:05]again and again eventually you're going to fall down and you're going
[48:10]to die so the imams of bait they have said this there's
[48:13]a hadith imam ali where he says he says anytime there is
[48:24]stay away it's better for you to stay away than take the
[48:30]risk because if you enter the gray areas too many times eventually
[48:34]you will be disappointed and you will fall into haram so don't
[48:39]make it a habit to always go into the gray areas and
[48:42]finally brothers and sisters i know some people they may object to
[48:48]what we said tonight either the first opinion that all music is
[48:52]haram or the second opinion that you know some types of music
[48:55]or haram others are some may say you know what many types
[49:01]of music even though one of those five do apply to them
[49:04]but i benefit from them there are certain benefits even though i
[49:09]zone out even though it does make me want to dance and
[49:12]whatever we said but you know i benefit from it it makes
[49:14]me feel good if something makes you feel good does that make
[49:20]you halal many people they raise this argument it makes me feel
[49:27]good so why is it haram not everything that makes you feel
[49:31]good brothers are sisters is there are many things that make us
[49:33]feel good but they're harmful alcohol makes us feel good doesn't it
[49:37]drugs they make us feel good they give us the most beautiful
[49:42]high that you never want to leave what does that mean drugs
[49:44]are good this is exactly what music does to you brother and
[49:47]sister it gives you a high i does feel good but the
[49:51]problem is what the problem is the harms that come with it
[49:55]so no one is saying that there is no good in music
[50:01]sometimes music will serve good purposes yes but remember the general rule
[50:05]of islam anytime the harms outweigh the good you stay away from
[50:08]it allah mentions that about alcohol and gambling he says in the
[50:12]holy quran yes they ask about alcohol and gambling the quran says
[50:25]there are goods pros and cons and alcohol and gambling alcohol has
[50:30]a lot of good things that come from it right you can
[50:33]become rich selling alcohol right that's a good that's a pro the
[50:38]intoxication that it gives you likewise gambling you can become rich so
[50:44]there is possible good potential good that may come from alcohol and
[50:48]gambling but what does the quran say in the end the quran
[50:53]says but the harms outweigh the good apply the same thing to
[51:02]music brothers and sisters i know music may make you feel good
[51:04]i some i've had some brothers tell me it helps me study
[51:08]it you know in studying when i study i remember i had
[51:13]a brother call me once say it when i study when i
[51:16]listen to music it makes uh you know my brain work much
[51:18]faster and better and i do much better on the test and
[51:22]all these all this other stuff that some people are saying i
[51:25]don't deny that music may have benefits but there's also what there's
[51:31]also terms now you may not realize the harms brothers and sisters
[51:34]just because you don't realize the harms does not mean there aren't
[51:40]harms correct ultraviolet rays realize it but scientists tell us it's there
[51:45]and it's bad for you radiation we can't feel it but we're
[51:47]told it's bad for you just because you can't feel what music
[51:51]is doing to you doesn't mean there is no harm brothers and
[51:54]sisters i remember recently i had some chest pain and there was
[51:59]a doctor who wanted me to do a ct scan so then
[52:03]i asked another doctor but he said you know what i don't
[52:06]think you should do a ct scan because even though there's good
[52:09]in it it'll show us what's inside your young radiation is not
[52:14]worth it can i feel the radiation no you can't feel the
[52:18]radiation but it slowly causes cancer just because you don't know there's
[52:22]a harm you can't feel the harm and there is good in
[52:25]it doesn't mean you should do it music brothers and sisters makes
[52:28]you feel good but what does it do it destroys your heart
[52:32]it destroys your spirit it depletes your spirituality it stains your hearts
[52:36]brothers and sisters and on the day of judgment the most important
[52:39]thing that allah will look at is what your heart the quran
[52:46]says on the day of judgment your money and children will not
[52:50]help you the only thing that will help you is what except
[52:55]for the one that comes with a pure heart listening to music
[53:01]brothers sustains your heart if you want to go to allah pure
[53:06]on the day of judgment stay away from music you don't feel
[53:08]it you don't feel it but when you're listening to music this
[53:12]is in fact staining your heart your heart is becoming black your
[53:16]iman is becoming weaker you're not going to be able to read
[53:19]dua and pray and turn to allah when you're listening to music
[53:24]music is an obstacle between you and allah you don't feel it
[53:29]you don't know it but allah and the imams tell us this
[53:30]trust them believe in them just like you believe scientists when they
[53:33]tell you there's ultraviolet rays just like you believe scientists when they
[53:37]tell you that there is radiation and such act and such thing
[53:41]there are harms that we can't feel brothers and sisters physical harms
[53:45]likewise there are things that harm our spirits music is one of
[53:50]those things that harm your spirits so even though you may be
[53:53]enjoying it and you think there's a lot of good in it
[53:57]but the damage that it does to your spirit and to your
[53:59]heart is not worth it so this is music you know is
[54:07]there halal music or not in a nutshell or not i don't
[54:11]know is that a nutshell you can decide so i'm done with
[54:16]the lecture if there's any questions any counter arguments please go ahead
[54:21]yes brother ali can you raise your voice you have to compete
[54:25]with the wind is there an exception what are some alternatives is
[54:32]there an exception for weddings absolutely not there is not one hadith
[54:37]that says singing music is haram except in weddings even in weddings
[54:44]singing the music of course remember the five criterias that i mentioned
[54:51]even in weddings the same thing applies so i know there is
[54:53]this unfortunately this idea that in weddings you can sing and dance
[54:58]and do whatever you want but this is wrong this is unislamic
[55:02]this is not it's not you know found in any hadith it's
[55:06]not found in any verse in the quran so even in weddings
[55:10]dancing and the music is haram now that you know the the
[55:15]music that i spoke about so are there any alternatives yes you
[55:18]can put an ashid you know islamic poetry let's be at you
[55:23]can put quran i know of some reciters some uh quran reciters
[55:28]that come and recite beautiful poetry about bait they have a very
[55:32]nice voice that's not boring don't think that this will make your
[55:36]uh wedding boring it's very nice i've attended some weddings where they
[55:40]bring those islamic reciters and they recite about imam ali about god
[55:45]about the prophet about fatima and let me tell you something even
[55:48]in the wedding of fatima to zahra there was some recitings the
[55:53]wives of rasulullah aisha um they were all reciting beautiful poetry with
[55:59]a nice voice for fatima but they weren't talking about guns and
[56:05]money and polish and lamborghini they were talking about what about rasulullah
[56:09]and how fatima is the greatest of all women and how imam
[56:15]ali was the greatest of all men so the alternative to music
[56:18]is to bring the islamic reciters and some of them are very
[56:21]creative and they can recite for you and based on what i
[56:26]said they can even use instruments as long as the tone is
[56:29]appropriate and the lyrics are fine so allah has given us but
[56:36]unfortunately many many of us are not interested we just want to
[56:41]do what our neps wants what our greedy nephs wants so there
[56:46]are alternatives and people are doing them i've attended some weddings that
[56:50]have applied and implemented these alternatives yes sister go ahead can you
[57:02]raise your voice i can't hear you i'm sorry good question so
[57:14]what if i go to a restaurant to a store to my
[57:17]friend's house wherever and this haram type of music one of the
[57:20]five that i mentioned applies is being played in the background is
[57:27]that no why because there are two things there is listening to
[57:30]music and there is hearing music what's the difference between hearing and
[57:35]listening hearing is it's going inside your ears but you're not directed
[57:43]towards it you're not focused correct you're not paying attention to it
[57:46]right now there's cars passing by right are we hearing that of
[57:51]course we're not deaf but are we paying attention to it no
[57:54]supposedly i hope you're paying attention to me right inshallah that's what
[58:00]i hope so hearing music is not ham listen carefully hearing music
[58:05]if you're not focused you're not paying attention to it now there's
[58:10]another fact that comes into play if it's in someone's house in
[58:16]someone's car even though hearing is not haram but now there's another
[58:19]problem what's the other problem as a muslim you have an obligation
[58:26]to forbid the evil so you can't sit in the car of
[58:28]your friend he listens to music and you only hear music and
[58:33]you're both smiling no it doesn't work that way why because he's
[58:36]committing haram you have to tell him stop or else i'm going
[58:39]to get out of your car this is if it's a personal
[58:43]place like a car a house but if you're in an airport
[58:44]if you're in a restaurant a supermarket you can't really do much
[58:48]can you even though me personally when i go to a restaurant
[58:50]i ask them nicely can you please lower down the music because
[58:55]the higher it is the more difficult it is for you not
[58:57]not to pay attention to it right but when it's very low
[59:02]voice low sound you can easily chat and you won't even know
[59:06]it's there but if it's a general place it's fine hearing music
[59:09]is halal yes sister you have a question same thing orchestra can
[59:21]i be in an orchestra if the lyrics are halal if the
[59:23]tune is appropriate does it make you want to dance does it
[59:28]trigger and provoke the desires and one of the brothers asked the
[59:31]same question remember the five things that i spoke about as long
[59:34]as it doesn't apply then you could be in a band you
[59:38]can play in the orchestra and so on and so forth so
[59:40]you have to make the judgment look at the five things that
[59:45]i mentioned memorize them and then see if it applies to your
[59:49]school band if it doesn't apply then it's halal but if it
[59:54]does apply it's haram if you're still not sure it goes back
[59:57]to the gray area remember i spoke about the gray area and
[60:01]what you should do regarding the gray area yes you know the
[60:09]islamic latinos are they all halal well once again sometimes i see
[60:14]some new latinas where the the tone you know the tune that
[60:19]they're using is not appropriate i mean if you don't know what
[60:23]he's saying you think it's uh it's rap it's some guy rapping
[60:25]you think it's a musician wrapping so i would think that not
[60:31]all latimeas and islamic nasheeds are halal because some of them they
[60:35]just take the tunes of some singers and then they just substitute
[60:40]the words with imam ali so i remember once someone showed me
[60:43]this uh you know this arabic islamic supposedly nasheed where it was
[60:47]all i love you i can't live without you you can tell
[60:50]some guy wrote it about a girl but this guy he would
[60:53]just put oh he's saying he's saying i love you i can
[60:57]when am i going to see you one of my and then
[60:59]he just puts out her saying it's inappropriate you can make the
[61:03]judgment when you feel like and it's it's inappropriate i think this
[61:05]is when you should turn it off but the majority of anashidh
[61:10]i think they're fine for example what's his name that famous um
[61:14]islamic singer no no no the uh he's he's the guy in
[61:23]the uk accent yusef what samuso for example i would think this
[61:28]is my opinion most of his songs are islamic because the five
[61:31]things that i mentioned do not apply this is my opinion remember
[61:33]once again because it has to do with personal judgment someone may
[61:38]disagree with me whoa so now we have two more questions yes
[61:45]go ahead why are people given certain talents to play instruments or
[61:50]have nice voices if we're not saying they can't be used we
[61:54]said they can be used so you can sing remember i said
[62:00]songs about your country about virtues about heroes about for example national
[62:07]anthems songs for kids songs about family this is all halal no
[62:10]one's saying this is haram so the voice should not be shunned
[62:15][Music] second of all if allah gave someone a beautiful voice why
[62:22]don't you use your voice rahul bait like baseball for example and
[62:27]all these other reciters so just the fact that god gave you
[62:31]a nice voice doesn't have to mean you have to go and
[62:33]become a contestant on american idol and all that nonsense go and
[62:36]become a reciter for ahil bates whether i am a male or
[62:41]a female no one saying it's all halal i gave the entire
[62:43]lecture you know they always give this example in iraq there were
[62:49]two young individuals the allah gave them mesmerizing voices allah gave them
[62:55]the most beautiful voices one of them they were the same age
[62:58]decided to become a singer and the other one decided to become
[63:05]a la dude a reciter for albeit the first one i'm sure
[63:10]many of you have heard his name is whom i've heard with
[63:17]the other one the other one is god gave both of them
[63:22]beautiful voices one decided to use it for haram for shaytan the
[63:25]other decided to use it for a little bit so if allah
[63:28]gives you a nice voice use little bit what's the other question
[63:31]the other question is all are all types of dancing what if
[63:36]you're an all-woman setting or an all-men setting so dancing that's a
[63:40]uh you know a completely different topic so with dancing there's a
[63:44]lot of disagreement between scholars most scholars say that all types of
[63:49]dancing is haram they mention one exception except in a wedding if
[63:53]it is what a if it's not a mixed wedding only woman
[63:56]only woman they can dance if there's no men looking at them
[64:00]they're allowed to dance in a wedding this is the opinion of
[64:06]samalama like say it does not accept this he says no even
[64:08]in weddings women are not allowed to dance now other ulama say
[64:13]there are some types of uh dancing which are not haram it's
[64:19]the calm type of dancing that is usually not you know out
[64:22]of control for example uh said falallah he used to mention debke
[64:26]he used to say debke is halal as long as it's not
[64:31]mixed men and women cannot do debka together he says woman cannot
[64:35]stand and look at men doing debke so if there's a only
[64:40]men's gathering and there's no woman looking at them then they can
[64:44]do the depcab but it has to be in a very appropriate
[64:48]fashion that's why when you see the weddings of today subhanallah sometimes
[64:51]i see some you know religious people doing the deputy with other
[64:56]women this is haram brothers and sisters there is no merchant that
[64:59]says this is halal the deputy is haram if you're doing it
[65:02]with other women unless of course it's like it's your relatives if
[65:07]i'm doing it in my house with my mom you could do
[65:09]the depth call you want with your mother or your sister but
[65:13]in the weddings where it's a mixed wedding debka so dancing according
[65:17]to mosa is all hallam yes uh let's see if there's any
[65:25]this bug isn't letting they're asking me okay ask me go ahead
[65:29]the brother asked um is there a difference between in public a
[65:32]man singing and a woman can a woman maybe sing in public
[65:35]even if it's a halal so can a woman sing in public
[65:40]if it's halal let's say if it's a recital can she recite
[65:44]alatomiya or you know the halal songs that we spoke about yes
[65:49]say she is allowed as long as it does not provoke the
[65:55]men so as long as it's in a very modest way where
[65:58]it does not incite and it does not trigger and provoke you
[66:02]know unwanted desires then it's hala and i have seen some clips
[66:08]on youtube of sisters reciting in a way in which i think
[66:10]it's fully compatible with modesty it's possible but they just have to
[66:14]be careful because remember when a woman is on stage sometimes uh
[66:19]some guys will you know wait for the wrong uh you know
[66:23]the wrong idea or the wrong message so it's just that when
[66:28]the she has the platform and the spotlight it has to be
[66:31]a modest you know performance so that it shouldn't it cannot be
[66:34]used against her or what not so even sisters can recite in
[66:38]the halal way and uh you know or for a little bit
[66:42]as long as it does not obstruct modesty what if you are
[66:47]working at a job that music plays very loud on and you
[66:50]cannot get them to lower the music and it does affect your
[66:54]heart do you have to quit the job of course of course
[66:57]if you work at a place where the music is too loud
[67:02]and you cannot not pay attention to it it's automatically entering your
[67:07]ears and your hearts of course you have to stop why because
[67:10]this is doing damage to your heart it's like someone asked me
[67:13]say it if i'm working at a place where there's radiation what
[67:17]do you think should i stop of course of course you should
[67:20]stop music is like music is like radiation this is how you
[67:25]should see it now listening to music of course so if you
[67:27]can't refrain from listening to music then definitely look for another job
[67:32]right now so many businesses are looking for people to hire so
[67:37]it's not the end of the world if you give up your
[67:40]job allah will send you 100 other places to work don't think
[67:42]that if you stop this job or you quit it you're going
[67:45]to starve and die and any more questions yeah one more question
[67:51]and we'll end because it's almost at on time so yes brother
[67:55]raise your voice please brother ali can you see what he's asking
[67:57]and you can tell us so what if you what if you
[68:13]know how you said you can hear the music but you can't
[68:15]listen to it what if it gets stuck in your head after
[68:19]you hear it what do you what is that it's a good
[68:23]question if it gets stuck in your head that that means you're
[68:28]listening i mean that's a difference between hearing and listening hearing you
[68:32]don't know some some background noise you don't know exactly what was
[68:35]said if it's stuck in your head that means you were listening
[68:40]so i would say in this situation that would be considered listening
[68:43]and it would be considered haram so one last question yes there
[68:48]are some alternatives to music so alternatives to music many alternatives one
[68:53]of them is listening to quran some reciters have a beautiful voice
[68:59]and it makes it truly makes your heart humble you know before
[69:02]allah this is one thing listening to quran other things listening to
[69:07]nasheeds you know islamic nasheeds like i said sam youssef there are
[69:14]reciters right now in english so there's many new reciters that are
[69:21]rising there's in every language there's an arabic there's an urdu there's
[69:27]in persian there's an um in english right now there's a lot
[69:31]of nice reciters and some of them they're truly beautiful and they
[69:34]have a meaning so at least give it a shot go on
[69:36]youtube and and try to listen to some of them so if
[69:39]you're addicted to listening to music i know it's difficult that you
[69:44]you always have to listen to something especially like if you're driving
[69:47]if you're driving or if you're just uh you know cleaning up
[69:49]your room or something then the alternative i would say is listening
[69:54]to these islamic and latin and many of them they're very nice
[69:58]i mean it's not like you're considering them something as boring just
[70:01]because i want to do halal then i have to settle for
[70:06]what's boring i find many of them to be very very amusing
[70:08]and very entertaining so try some of these and in this way
[70:14]you can get away from that addiction that sometimes we develop from
[70:20]the haram music are we done let's just final question from the
[70:25]sister side and this will be the last question i think brother
[70:30]ali you will have to this is like before when someone had
[70:35]had to send a message to with a horse remember so the
[70:40]question is as five minutes later we will hear it what is
[70:51]it what if they uh what if in school they require you
[70:56]to take the class and you have to begin in school if
[70:58]they require you to pick an instrument to listen to music and
[71:02]it's not haram music remember one of the five things don't apply
[71:07]then that's fine you can do it but if one of the
[71:08]haram things apply then you have to tell your teacher and principal
[71:13]that this is against my religion when i went to school brothers
[71:15]and sisters this is what i did i used to bring a
[71:18]note you can get a note from us from the iia we'll
[71:22]write you a note that you can be excused from school for
[71:23]my kids and when they have music class even though i don't
[71:28]know if it's 100 haram it's the gray area i like them
[71:30]to stay away from the gray area so i call up my
[71:33]principal and i tell them look i live in the us and
[71:37]i have the freedom of religion so i want my son or
[71:38]daughter excused and you will be excused brothers and sisters so if
[71:44]you really want to get out of it you can and they
[71:45]will let you get out of it if you tell them this
[71:48]is for religious purposes this is one of the beauties of living
[71:52]in this country is freedom of religion and this is your right
[71:54]you have to fight for it thank you so much brothers and
[71:58]sisters for joining us tonight insha allah that cleared up a lot
[72:00]of the confusion regarding music and insha allah looking forward to seeing
[72:06]you in another entertaining edition of our nyc friday nights next week
[72:12]insha'allah thank you so much
