[1:22]first speaker for today inshallah will be a check with mine or
[1:25]us too many of you know him so i will do a
[1:30]brief introduction of who years so in 98 1998 shaker with juan
[1:35]completed his undergraduate studies at Princeton University where he received his bachelor's
[1:40]degree in ecology and evolutionary biology along with the miners in near
[1:44]near eastern studies in education in two thousand shake with Juan moved
[1:48]to come where he began his initial studies at the house' and
[1:52]he was involved with the number of different studies of number of
[1:55]different disciplines after a number of years being there he was he
[1:59]turned his attention to the study of the Quran and the traditions
[2:02]of the Prophet Muhammad the Imams he memorized much of the Quran
[2:04]and began studying the famous Sunni exegesis there after this class prepared
[2:09]him to attend the lectures and exegesis of ayatollah javadi Amelie he
[2:14]also began a unique study of a number of hadith book including
[2:20]kitabu Kaffee so in 2006 when chef Ruth wanna moved back to
[2:23]the US in conjunction with several of his teachers he established an
[2:27]organization called Islamic text Institute and he is presently the Executive Director
[2:32]researcher and translator at ITI idea is a non-for-profit organization research institute
[2:37]that makes islamic primary resources available to non-specialists readers through outstanding translation
[2:41]and original commentary so the purpose of IT s commentary is to
[2:47]guide the non-specialist through through these texts since inception iti set his
[2:52]sight on translation and commentary of al cafe by sheikh el Kilani
[2:56]especially the first eight of the 35 books known as a pseudo
[2:59]caffeine to date I TI's published the first two of these books
[3:04]intellect and foolishness and knowledge and its merits you probably seeing them
[3:08]on the table there he has a number of other publications and
[3:12]some of his other notable publications includes God's emissaries Adam to Jesus
[3:19]so we're really here today to to speak about chez Fleur Swan
[3:22]so before I go there he's actually going to be doing a
[3:26]talk on Islamic literacy and the organization that he has established in
[3:29]2014 both my wife and I are students of him through Islamic
[3:33]literacy and it's been a phenomenal learning journey to be his students
[3:36]so I want to let you all know about that presentation that's
[3:39]happening so today we really here talking about shake with wand leading
[3:42]the fourth publication of ITI which is a salute to the master
[3:48]of martyrs a commentary on CRT I assure so the idea sure
[3:50]is arguably the most famous and offers island of off recited of
[3:53]the Sierra or salutations to God's infallible guides it is the epitome
[3:58]of the genre of ziyada and has always been a mainstay in
[4:00]the daily daily liturgy of Shia scholars and worshippers as in mohammad
[4:04]baqir alayhis salaam please recite Salawat especially intended when he talked to
[4:12]his disciples this commentary attempts to uncover the theological historical and spiritual
[4:17]and underpinnings of this outstanding sierra please welcome check with one to
[4:22]the podium with you later silhouette assalamualaikum warahmatullah bismillah r-rahman r-rahim al
[4:38]hamdu lillahi rabbil aalameen or salatu salam o allah mohammad wallah elevated
[4:42]but you'd be not Paula Deen recite masala worthless a la salle
[4:47]de yada Muhammad so we began in ITI working on this commentary
[4:58]ashura we wanted to we've been trying to tackle in addition to
[5:00]cut a block a fee which is really our mainstay that we've
[5:04]been working on since day one we've been working on some of
[5:06]these other texts in parallel so we have drawn it be' and
[5:10]now this grr should I work on to our Camille as well
[5:12]and so we thought it would it's important to use the same
[5:17]methodology that we use for a hadith through a caffeine use the
[5:20]same methodology to try to understand these these doors not just with
[5:24]the translation so the idea behind the whole work is that a
[5:28]translation by itself however good it maybe it's not sufficient especially for
[5:32]a non-specialist and cautiously even specialists rely heavily on the commentaries of
[5:36]previous scholars so the coffee for instance has 15 major commentaries that
[5:42]we that we have still with us and and so our scholars
[5:46]are of course to be fooled foolish not to benefit from someone
[5:49]like a lamb emergency who has a 26 volume meta to local
[5:53]commentary on a caffeine and so that's the most comprehensive commentary that
[6:00]we have so even scholars themselves my point is rely on the
[6:04]commentaries and the views of past scholars we start with that so
[6:06]you don't reinvent the wheel and then you add and you change
[6:09]and you refute and all of that so it becomes a springboard
[6:11]for new ideas to come out of those same traditions and so
[6:15]scholars need that then of course our non-specialists definitely need that so
[6:18]that you're reading the text you're engaged but you're also guided through
[6:21]the process so the conclusions that you draw their conclusions that are
[6:27]in line with the rest of our understanding of the Dean so
[6:30]you end up with a coherent whole if you see one hadith
[6:33]one part of the z Ro one part of the door on
[6:36]that seems to contradict other things that you know then that's what
[6:39]we'll step in and say yes it does contradict so we'll throw
[6:43]it out for these reasons or no it doesn't contradict here's a
[6:46]way to understand it where it can fit into everything else and
[6:48]enhance our understanding rather than being in contradiction in actuality dziala tashera
[6:55]is more more famous than the needs needs mention but it's a
[7:04]ziara data is given to us by the fifth mm and it
[7:06]is typical in many ways of the Ziarat so we have a
[7:13]lot of the same elements the tally and tab every is like
[7:17]this is the major theme to Utley is pulling close and drawing
[7:20]close to everything is godly and good ty battery is distancing yourself
[7:24]and disavowing whatever is evil and and against God that's you constantly
[7:28]see that abre la la la la y'all can see seals with
[7:35]those those phrases used in the Sierra that also gives us an
[7:39]idea of the placement of Sala on the prophet and a debate
[7:45]and Latin on their enemies and that also is a manifestation of
[7:47]that same principle of totally drawing close in Tibet early distancing yourself
[7:51]both of which are essential parts of faith right love and hatred
[7:55]love for all this good and hatred for all this bad they're
[7:59]both equally important to get closer to Allah we can't just simply
[8:02]say Lahm's a loving religion as a peaceful really let's just be
[8:04]loved everyone and not hate anyone right that's not in line with
[8:08]the teachings that we get from that of the bait and so
[8:10]the Giotto really manifest that and gives us both sides of the
[8:14]coin I'm going to read a quick excerpt and then um at
[8:16]the end we can have some questions according to the program this
[8:20]is an excerpt so we have one phrase in the Sierra that's
[8:25]again oft repeated in Ziarat where we refer to the Imam as
[8:29]Abner rasool allah assalamu alayka ya bunnell rasool allah peace be with
[8:35]you O son of The Messenger of God so Imam Hussein and
[8:37]of course is the grandson of the Prophet through lady fatima not
[8:41]technically the son of the of the Prophet so that's that raises
[8:46]a question so we we jumped in we said let's try to
[8:47]understand why is he called yup not Osuna and what's the significance
[8:52]of why can't we say oh grandson of the Prophet right up
[8:54]to the son of the Prophet so in Arabic words such as
[8:59]eben son bint or daughter wallet and veria refer to one's immediate
[9:02]son and daughter as well as more distant male and female progeny
[9:06]such as grandchildren and great-grandchildren more technically in Arabic I'm the son
[9:13]of my grandfather on the Sun and migrated on the sign of
[9:17]Adam right we can say that I can say you have not
[9:17]Adam to refer to you know anyone any human being and that's
[9:21]correct in Arabic while is it while in English it politically doesn't
[9:24]make sense but technically it doesn't doesn't make sense more significantly in
[9:28]the Quran in the traditions these words are used equally to refer
[9:32]to all of one's progeny whether through one's son or one's daughter
[9:35]in other words once daughter's son is as much one once progeny
[9:42]as one's son's son so we're talking to an Arabic audience the
[9:46]Quran the prophet is speaking to a jaggedy audience where it's patriarchal
[9:51]oh the only thing that matters is male ancestors your female ancestors
[9:57]are nothing your women and your family are nothing in that society
[10:00]and so now the point is being made that despite the fact
[10:03]that her saying is related to the Prophet only through his mother
[10:06]that doesn't make him any less the son of the Prophet so
[10:12]there couple of verses verses 6 84 and 85 named Jesus as
[10:14]one of the progeny one of the rya of either Noah or
[10:18]Abraham depending on the pronoun when his relation to both was clearly
[10:21]through only his mother since he was fatherless so Jesus is one
[10:27]of the rya of nor but its relation to new his through
[10:30]his mother right so the word is so so excited that as
[10:35]an example that the Quran uses and one other example as well
[10:37]then we said is this Islamic usage stands in stark contrast to
[10:42]the uses of these words during the age of ignorance before the
[10:44]advent of Islam Arabs of that era would only consider their sons
[10:50]Sons to be their progeny not their daughters sons the famous couplet
[10:54]says Vanunu Banu ABNA una joven a tuna Vanunu ABNA or rigid
[10:57]el abbadi our sons are our sons Sons our daughters son are
[11:03]the sons of other men right that was that jazzy attitude towards
[11:08]your daughters they don't belong to you they belong to get married
[11:10]off they belong to someone else and their children are someone else's
[11:13]not yours you're your true descendants are only through your son hypocrites
[11:18]who helped personal vendettas against the prophets family reverted to the former
[11:23]usage of words such as eben and bent rejecting the Islamic usage
[11:26]at least with regard to the prophets progeny what follows are three
[11:29]illustrative examples so one of the things that we tried to do
[11:35]the commentary was to look at use history and historical records to
[11:38]try to help us to understand some of these things so when
[11:41]you say yep notice will allow you're actually protesting more alia you're
[11:46]actually protesting the whole umayyad propaganda which was to say the Prophet
[11:51]is up thar right the Quran rejects this is in the shiney
[11:56]Ahuja lap down you're the one who's against you he's the one
[11:59]who's up to not you o prophet but now these people are
[12:02]saying no you're actually up dub you have no children he died
[12:04]with no progeny and these kinds of things so they're going against
[12:06]the Quran we are saying yep not Ursula to Imam Hussein are
[12:12]protesting them so let's bring that to life through this one tradition
[12:14]so the Quan moi we has servant reported that Malawi at once
[12:18]threatened that if I learned of anyone referring to these two men
[12:23]meaning Hassan and Hussein as the sons of the messenger of god
[12:25]I shall punish him severely so even calling imam hassan ii mama
[12:28]saying the two sons of the Prophet was a crime against mahalia
[12:34]against the state right he wanted to eradicate that thought don't even
[12:38]say that because it said the wrong and wrong image instead referred
[12:41]to them as the sons of Ali they're his sons not the
[12:46]Prophet son's the Kwan said after he issued this edict he ordered
[12:48]me to enter his own children's names in a sheriff which we
[12:52]explained that was some sort of ledger that included all like a
[12:58]census of some sorts so I entered the names of his sons
[13:01]and his sons Sons but I left out his daughters sons I
[13:05]know if you're able to follow somalia has said that you can't
[13:08]refer to Hassan Hussein as the sons of the Prophet but now
[13:12]he's telling his servant to record all the names of everyone in
[13:14]my family and so the servant comes and he only includes based
[13:18]on on the reasoning of mahalia he only includes mahalia sons Sons
[13:22]in his part of his family malawi his daughters sons he doesn't
[13:26]include I brought the ledger to him he looked through it and
[13:33]scolded me saying fie on you you have left left out some
[13:35]of my progeny I asked him home he said are the sons
[13:39]of so-and-so mentioning one of his daughters not my sons are the
[13:42]sons of this other daughter of my not my son's the Quan
[13:46]says I told him really are your daughter's son's to be your
[13:49]sons but Fatima's sons are not to be the sons of the
[13:53]messenger of god and mafia's responses what is wrong with you don't
[13:55]let anyone hear you say such as such a thing right so
[13:58]it brings out a double standard and about the fact that they
[14:00]had this policy that they're trying to implement even their own courtiers
[14:04]their own internal mechanism they themselves though you see the double standards
[14:08]and said sometimes they call this to their attention so that's an
[14:12]example of the commentary the text itself of the sierra is also
[14:17]there so basically the book has one section where it's just the
[14:20]arabic and the translation and then following that then the text is
[14:23]repeated but then with commentary footnotes to explain everything especially to give
[14:27]a lot of historical context because we have of course the Latins
[14:30]that are always a subject of a lot of confusion for people
[14:34]why so much calling down of God's damnation on people so we
[14:37]really devoted a lot of time and effort to try to understand
[14:41]the concept and then once we understood the concept theoretically to understand
[14:45]why these individual people who are mentioned in the sierra are deserving
[14:49]of such a condemnation and so we went into a lot of
[14:50]history of their background and thinks they had done things they've said
[14:52]what they really stood for and why that's now deserving of God's
[14:56]condemnation assalamualaikum warahmatullah
