[0:03]respected brothers and sisters may Allah subhana tala accept your prayers your
[0:10]fasting on this first day of this holy month of Ramadan that
[0:14]we have been given the pleasure and the to the success to
[0:19]attend a lot of us who existed between us last year did
[0:25]not make it to the Ramadan of this year so it's a
[0:29]great blessing that we are here that we together that we're given
[0:33]another chance to take advantage of this beautiful month this month where
[0:38]we can repent we can purify ourselves we can improve our lives
[0:42]and what's most important is that we take advantage of this month
[0:48]and here we are gathering together in order to remember Allah subhana
[0:51]wa ta'ala and to make this a beneficial month inshallah by coming
[0:57]here by congregating as brothers and sisters and Believers after we've breaken
[1:03]our fast we come here in order to listen to the words
[1:09]of Allah subhana and the words of the IMs who take the
[1:12]wisdom from the prophet Sall Al and what I'm going to be
[1:17]trying to talk about in the next few nights that I'm going
[1:19]to be at your service inshallah are hopefully things that are related
[1:22]to contemporary issues and the topic that I chose for today is
[1:30]a topic related to the the artistic element in Islam now a
[1:34]lot of you who went to University might not have been very
[1:38]interested in taking art you might have taken it as an elective
[1:42]but something that you just take like the history of Art and
[1:47]things like that just to get an A and improve your GPA
[1:49]I'm not going to make this into a history of art lecture
[1:54]this is not my objective but I want to talk about what
[1:56]Islam teaches us about art as opposed to what we understand as
[2:02]art in the modern sense that we live in if you go
[2:06]to the university or you you've heard about the word art you
[2:09]think of you know it being some type of subject that you
[2:14]go to university and you learn about art is probably about painting
[2:19]something it's about making a design for something it's something you go
[2:25]to school for to learn either you're talented you're born and you
[2:31]have this Talent since your birth or you go to school and
[2:35]you learn it this is not how art was viewed in the
[2:38]human history this is something that developed later on it wasn't too
[2:47]long ago almost during the time of the Renaissance when Art became
[2:50]a separate thing from the human life in the past if we
[2:56]look at the Nations that existed before art was a way of
[2:59]life it was how you lived your life there wasn't someone who
[3:05]went to school to become artistic in order to draw a painting
[3:08]or to make a special design that they can post on a
[3:13]flyer or something like that art was a way of life art
[3:18]was seen as the way to express the higher truths of reality
[3:23]every person was expected to be an artist and art was reflected
[3:29]in every part of our life the way the people spoke was
[3:35]Art the way they built their homes was Art the way they
[3:38]built their Furniture was Art the way they slept was Art the
[3:44]way they function in society was artistic and Allah subhana wa tala
[3:50]in the Quran talks to us about himself fashioning things creating things
[3:55]in a very beautiful fashion in a beautiful way so that every
[4:01]everything in our lives should also mimic that Divine activity when I'm
[4:07]speaking to other people how do I speak with them it's very
[4:11]important for a Muslim individual to have an artistic way of speech
[4:16]what was IM aliam known for what was the prophet sallam known
[4:23]for they were known for their eloquence in speech when they talk
[4:28]everybody would listen to them there was Beauty in the way they
[4:34]express things when they describ things they used beautiful words and beautiful
[4:37]expressions and a beautiful voice to express them that was Art when
[4:44]the Quran is recited it's recited in a melodious fashion this is
[4:49]a form of art when people used to worship in the Masjid
[4:54]and masjids were built if you go to the ancient cities where
[5:00]Islam had was flourishing in the civilization you go to um countries
[5:04]where you can see things that were built 500 600 700 years
[5:06]ago and you look at all of those tiles that were put
[5:12]all of those geometric designs that were used the way the masjids
[5:16]were built it was all a form of art as Muslims today
[5:22]have we continued this tradition or have we lost it even those
[5:29]who go into modern art modern art has distanced itself from the
[5:33]real objective of humanity which is to orient yourself towards Allah subhah
[5:38]wa taala you come to the postmodern world if you go to
[5:43]art class they teach you that art is supposed to be the
[5:45]self-expression of the artist you have to describe what's inside of you
[5:53]as an individual and if you go to even an extreme form
[5:56]of postmodernist art if you go to the art museums they they
[6:02]focus on chaos they focus on fragmentation they focus on the dark
[6:07]side of humanity you can see that reflected in the movies as
[6:10]well there's a lot of dystopia a lot of confusion a lot
[6:15]of things that we see around us talk about the inability to
[6:18]understand one another the inability to reach peace with one another we're
[6:27]so diverse and things are so subjective that we cannot understand anything
[6:31]we can't know the truth anymore any event that used to be
[6:34]clearly wrong before nowadays you find people debating and they're not sure
[6:38]about it there's confusion and this is part of the postmodern movement
[6:45]is to cause people to become confused by saying that there's no
[6:50]truth it's all subjective and a lot of times this coincides with
[6:54]Nations that want to earn wealth if you look at the Arabs
[7:00]during before Islam the Arabs before Islam they used to have pilgrimages
[7:06]one of those pilgrimages was to Mecca everybody's aware of Mecca right
[7:11]the Kaa being over there the Muslims go perform Hajj over there
[7:16]now the Arabs didn't have only one CA Caba means any building
[7:23]or structure that is a square or a cube that's what a
[7:26]Caba is and the Arabs back then they didn't have one Caba
[7:32]they had multiple Cabas there was one in Mecca which was very
[7:35]famous and there were other ones that were to the south of
[7:39]Mecca one that was very near to Mecca there was one in
[7:41]Yemen and S if you go to Yemen if anybody wants to
[7:46]go there you go to S there's an old Kaa over there
[7:51]and it belonged to a very famous individual whose story was mentioned
[7:54]in the Quran his name was abaha abraha was a Christian King
[8:00]he went to Yemen and he took over that region he was
[8:07]very powerful and he wanted to have the power in the region
[8:09]so what did he do he saw that everybody's going to Mecca
[8:15]and Performing the pilgrimage remember this is before Islam so he built
[8:21]himself his own Caba and he wanted to tell the people to
[8:24]not go to Mecca anymore and to come to his and he
[8:28]designed it in a way that made it even more beautiful and
[8:32]attractive his Caba wasn't a simple structure that was a cub and
[8:39]placed over there no he adorned it with gold and he made
[8:43]it so luxurious he thought that anybody who looks at this is
[8:46]going to be so attached and attracted to it that they're going
[8:50]to leave Mecca and they're going to come here and he noticed
[8:53]that people were not coming to his Caba he only got a
[8:59]little attraction to it most of the tribes that were surrounding Mecca
[9:03]that had their own Cabas were also angry at Mecca because they
[9:08]weren't getting all the customers Mecca was getting all the customers because
[9:13]Mecca was placed in an area where it was very strategic for
[9:15]those who were trading at that time anybody that wanted to trade
[9:19]Mecca was in the perfect position those coming from the East coming
[9:24]from the south coming from the north coming from the West Mecca
[9:27]was in the middle of the area and it was the best
[9:31]place to go so it was flourishing all the money was there
[9:33]if you compare it to nowadays A lot of the countries over
[9:39]there in the same region are competing with one another over who
[9:43]can get more tourists and who can make more money this is
[9:48]like history repeating itself again every country over there in the Gulf
[9:53]region wants to become the Hub and their behavior is similar to
[9:57]what these people used to do the people of Mecca it wasn't
[10:03]only because their position was strategic that people used to go there
[10:07]they also had a different mindset the people that were running the
[10:10]Caba in meca they said look we don't care about religion it
[10:16]doesn't matter what people believe in we're trying to bring everybody here
[10:22]to spend their money so what did they do they put Idols
[10:25]for every single tribe that comes and trades there they said okay
[10:33]we're very open-minded we're a pluralistic society if you worship hub for
[10:38]example we'll put you an idol there if you worship will'll put
[10:41]your idol there if you worship Al will'll put you there you
[10:43]worship Jesus Christ we put a we put a picture for him
[10:48]there when you worship Virgin Mary put her picture there whatever you
[10:52]are we're going to allow you to place your idol or your
[10:56]imagery or whatever you worship you can put it in the Caba
[10:59]or around the Caba and this made it very attractive anybody was
[11:03]able to come and then they found a representation for themselves over
[11:08]there there's no Allah there's no truth according to the heads of
[11:12]Mecca the ones who govern there they didn't care about religion they
[11:15]only cared about money so they allow this on the outside in
[11:22]the name of being a pluralistic society they said whether it's Allah
[11:25]they worship whether it's Jesus they worship whether it's h they worship
[11:32]to us it's all the same we don't care about who they
[11:33]worship we just want them to come here and spend their money
[11:37]so this is one of the main reasons why people used to
[11:42]go to Mecca and trade over there because they found that they
[11:46]had some representation abar abaha in the South he was a Christian
[11:52]the cabba that he made represented a church so it was called
[11:56]a Caba but it was also referred to as the Church of
[11:59]Abraham so he wasn't able to attract a lot of people that
[12:01]were non-christians so AB said you know what if I can't beat
[12:09]them with my design and location let me go attack these people
[12:12]and it's true he decided to go and attack Mecca the very
[12:16]famous story that a lot of you have heard of when he
[12:20]gathered the elephants a lot of you must have heard of that
[12:24]right the chapter of the elephant in the Quran he gathered the
[12:28]elephants and he went to attack Mecca he wanted to destroy the
[12:34]Kaaba and he thought by doing that he'll be able to bring
[12:38]everybody to Mecca so as he began to attack the other tribes
[12:45]camea to know that AB is going to destroy Mecca and destroy
[12:48]the Caba over there nobody stood in his way and nobody defended
[12:53]the meccans because all of them thought if Mecca goes away if
[12:56]the Caba is destroyed then all of us are going to benefit
[13:00]all the customers that we're going there they're going to stop going
[13:03]there and they're going to come to us but Allah subhana wa
[13:06]tala had a different plan he went with his elephants and the
[13:10]chapter of Ali is very famous with the story where Allah had
[13:13]sent birds with stones stones that were burning and they cast them
[13:19]on the elephants and the army of abah and he wasn't able
[13:22]to go and destroy the Kaa he lost Allah subhana T has
[13:29]protected that after this event Islam was revealed the prophet sallallah alai
[13:34]wasam came and he wanted to bring Humanity back to the origin
[13:42]and the source to reorient them if you look at the world
[13:45]we live in now is almost the same way it's scattered people
[13:51]have a lot of different thoughts people don't know what's right and
[13:55]wrong anymore any discussion any topic you find people justifying this side
[14:01]and justifying that side it's like one of these Greek skeptic philosophers
[14:05]used to say for every argument that you give for one side
[14:09]there's the one that's equally valid on the other side skepticism is
[14:13]becoming very dominant and people are beginning to accept everything the Quran
[14:19]came at a time when the people's mindsets in Mecca was like
[14:23]that and it came to alter that it was telling people that
[14:28]if you live this way you don't have any standards you don't
[14:32]have any values you're not oriented towards Allah subhana wa tal you're
[14:35]going to destroy yourselves as human beings this is not going to
[14:42]bring you any good if you go by your whims and your
[14:44]imaginations and your false thoughts and your false ideas then you're going
[14:48]to suffer as human beings and look at us it's 2025 and
[14:54]we still bomb each other we still kill each other we still
[15:00]destroy each other we still murder children women men older people younger
[15:04]people it doesn't matter the whole world is watching massacres happening and
[15:09]it's not changed over time so the Quran came to say that
[15:14]this is a problem not of your thought you might think to
[15:17]yourself well we're in 2025 we're so Advanced we have technology we've
[15:21]gone so much forward and advanced as humans we shouldn't be doing
[15:26]any of this right this is your assumption but in reality we
[15:31]might have advanced technologically but humanistically we haven't Advanced a bit there's
[15:38]still the same disease and the same problem inside of us in
[15:42]fact this technology that we've invented to improve our lives as human
[15:45]beings to make us more aware and to make us more understanding
[15:50]of one another people now we live in a world where we
[15:53]can see videos from others that come from all over the world
[15:58]where more understanding of different cultures right in the past people were
[16:03]closed up right they belong to a tribe they belong to a
[16:05]country they didn't know who the other was everyone else was a
[16:10]threat to them but nowadays we're open to the whole world yet
[16:13]we couldn't resolve and we still don't resolve this one issue of
[16:17]difference so what is the problem what's the issue over here if
[16:22]we look at the verses that Allah subhana T mentions in the
[16:26]Quran when it comes to these idols that people worshiped the Quran
[16:33]wants us to focus on what the main issue is over here
[16:37]Allah subh says have you considered and and man the third one
[16:49]these were three Idols that the Arabs had been worshiping at that
[16:53]time God was challenging these individuals telling them this Idol worshiping that
[16:58]you have I'm going to challenge it this is all incorrect these
[17:05]individuals believe that these Idols were either Angels female angels this is
[17:11]why in the Quran Allah subhana wa T talks to these individuals
[17:14]telling them that you've given God the female daughters and you've taken
[17:17]the males because they used to have this negative perception of females
[17:20]at that time so God mentions all of this he says these
[17:31]are but names which you have coined you and your fathers there's
[17:39]no reality Behind These Idols you invented something and you and your
[17:43]fathers gave that thing value it doesn't have real value it has
[17:49]no objective value I come here and I I I make a
[17:54]shape uh a structure let's say and I say that this is
[17:56]a superpower structure does it make it a superpower structure if I
[18:01]build a car just a model car and say that this is
[18:04]the fastest car in the world and then can turn into an
[18:07]airplane and fly and do this and do that but if it
[18:08]really can't would it make it do that just because I said
[18:15]so no and the time that we live in now people are
[18:18]rewarding things and trying to make reality whatever they feel and whatever
[18:23]they think well I feel that this is this and that just
[18:27]because you feel something it doesn't change the reality of that thing
[18:32]if you feel that lying in this situation is good it doesn't
[18:37]make lying a good thing yes you can lie to yourself these
[18:39]people used to perform pilgrimages to Mecca worship these Idols thinking that
[18:44]these Idols are bringing down the rain they're controlling the wind the
[18:51]seasons are under their control they believed it but just because you
[18:55]believe something and you give a name to something and postmodernism is
[18:58]very good at giving names to things everything that's supposed to be
[19:04]a bad thing suddenly has a good name that's given to it
[19:09]we call things human rights let's say we call things democracy but
[19:12]in the name of democracy we go and Destroy nations in the
[19:17]name of Human Rights we go and murder children you can call
[19:21]it human rights you can call it democracy you can call it
[19:23]whatever you want there are just names that you have invented and
[19:26]you put to justify your behavior if there's no truth and objective
[19:32]reality behind it it means nothing so Allah in the Quran says
[19:37]they these are but names which you have coined you and your
[19:42]fathers for which Allah has not sent down any Authority God is
[19:47]the only true power if God didn't reveal this message and didn't
[19:52]send this messeng and did it give that thing power then it
[19:56]has no power whatsoever all of humanity can get together and say
[20:00]that this thing has power it will not give it any power
[20:04]the real orientation we have as Muslims and what Islam tried to
[20:09]do is to direct us towards the source the origin of existence
[20:12]which is God as a Muslim your heart should be attached to
[20:18]the only real thing which is Allah subhah wa ta'ala your hopes
[20:21]should only be attached to that one real thing which is Allah
[20:25]subhah wa ta'ala you attach yourself to something else you're going to
[20:29]ruin yourself and ruin the rest of humanity the verse says they
[20:41]follow nothing but speculation conjecture and the desires of the Soul they
[20:48]created these Idols because they had they were the reflection of their
[20:52]own ego a reflection of their own desire and this is what
[20:58]postmodern art is also doing you go to a museum you go
[21:02]to the architecture that we have here the designs we have at
[21:05]home a lot of it tells us to do our self-expression and
[21:10]there's nothing wrong with expressing yourself the problem is when you believe
[21:16]that you are everything the ego The Pride the arrogance is the
[21:23]problem then Allah subhana T says while there has already come to
[21:29]them guidance from their lord and then he says how many an
[21:38]angel there is in the heavens whose intercession is of no avail
[21:42]in any way except after Allah grants permission to whomever he wishes
[21:45]and approves he said that if there's anything that can help you
[21:48]it can only help you if Allah allows it to help you
[21:52]so what Islam was trying to do here it was trying to
[21:57]bring the minds of human beings to tell them remove these imaginations
[22:02]that you have of reality don't build the civilization based on your
[22:09]whims and your desires you're never going to bring up out a
[22:12]just society that way you're never going to be able to do
[22:18]good for yourself or others if you do it this way a
[22:20]lot of these guys that were living there in the name of
[22:24]pluralism and the name of goodness they were spread spreading corruption and
[22:30]evilness and this is what we see repeating nowadays so art is
[22:37]a very important thing in our lives to go back to the
[22:39]main topic expressing yourself is very important but not expressing your ego
[22:45]per se expressing that Divine Beauty that's inside of you what art
[22:53]is supposed to do is supposed to help you transcend yourself to
[22:57]go beyond yourself Muslims have developed sacred calligraphy all of you have
[23:03]been to masjids and areas where you find that there is very
[23:06]beautiful caligraphy drawn on the Masid walls it's amazing what kind of
[23:13]beauty there is in this calligraphy this art was passed down from
[23:17]one master to another alhamdulillah when I was in Iran I was
[23:22]studying in theza when I was learning the farsy language at that
[23:26]time there was one teacher there he was on the roof of
[23:32]the building and he was the teacher of calligraphy every time you
[23:36]had free time you could go up there and he would teach
[23:38]you how to draw and how to write this beautiful it was
[23:42]one script one font that he knew how to draw but he
[23:45]knew it very well and when you go there you think to
[23:49]yourself I'm going to learn how to draw better right I'm going
[23:54]to learn how to write a very beautiful script of Arabic language
[23:57]but then you see that this teacher himself is a person who
[24:02]was very spiritual a person that doesn't just pass down the ability
[24:07]to draw and write beautiful handwriting no he was teaching you how
[24:14]to purify yourself and as soon as I began with this writing
[24:17]you begin with writing letters first the first letter was Al if
[24:20]you take it and you start just repeating it over and over
[24:25]and over again and this practice teaches you how to be patient
[24:28]teaches you how to admit your faults and your mistakes when you
[24:33]finish it you bring it back to the teacher and he looks
[24:34]at it and he says okay this was an error here this
[24:37]was an error here and he corrects it but the amount of
[24:43]patience it takes to perform such an art imagine you're writing a
[24:46]whole verse this is one letter a whole word of calligraphy on
[24:53]a poster one wrong move and it's ruined you can't fix it
[24:56]there's no eraser there's no delete button there's no Photoshop there's nothing
[25:00]it's a poster you're writing on it whatever's on there is on
[25:04]there it's not going to be fixed so you have to be
[25:08]so accurate and you think to yourself I thought to myself it's
[25:11]impossible no way like I can write one letter and I can
[25:16]get it right but to write a whole word I'm bound to
[25:17]make a wrong curve I'm bound to go a little bit above
[25:22]where I'm supposed to be you have to hold the pen it
[25:27]was a wooden pencil it was made from a plant that grows
[25:29]in Iran in Iraq they also have these pens as well their
[25:33]pencils that you have to cut them at a certain angle and
[25:35]dip them in ink and then write with them if it's not
[25:39]at that correct angle it's going to make it too thick or
[25:41]too thin or too much ink on the paper so many possibilities
[25:47]of making a mistake but when you do it and you realize
[25:50]how much practice it needs how much dedication it needs how much
[25:55]Focus you start realizing that this is not just something that you're
[25:58]writing and it looks good this is a spiritual act it's teaching
[26:03]you patience it's teaching you how to focus all of your energy
[26:11]and attention on that one thing over there A lot of these
[26:14]new age spir spiritualist movements talk about the power of the now
[26:17]right the now mement live in the now live in the now
[26:21]right they take these from these religious teachings and this calligraphy used
[26:26]to teach you how to live in that now because all all
[26:30]of your attention and focus is placed on writing that correctly and
[26:35]drawing it correctly now you go on Photoshop or you type in
[26:40]a prompt in AI write me a calligraphical sentence of this and
[26:46]that they even have apps I keep getting them on my on
[26:48]my phone download this app buy this app subcribe in this app
[26:53]you just drag the letter it's already drawn for you and you
[26:55]put it next to the other one and you get the most
[26:58]beautiful calligraphy what does that do to me it doesn't do anything
[27:01]yes it looks good on the outside but does it have the
[27:07]effect that writing that thing on my own and drawing it on
[27:09]my own half no it doesn't have the effect so traditionally speaking
[27:15]humans had invented these things to assist them on a spiritual level
[27:20]too and as we're progressing with the c progress as humans we're
[27:26]moving towards this world where we become less and less creative we
[27:30]have less activities in our life that help us Focus I need
[27:35]to develop Focus I'm already have a million thoughts in my mind
[27:38]every single day that are not allowing me to live a good
[27:40]life I finish from one thought I jump to another but someone
[27:45]who is a calligrapher doesn't have the problems of being attacked and
[27:50]bombarded with a million thoughts why because he or she mastered how
[27:54]to place all of their focus on one thing and remove all
[28:00]of their thoughts from other things this requires training so calligraphy was
[28:06]a spiritual act and we still have people that exist in this
[28:09]world that are calligraphers and master calligraphers but the amount of calligraphers
[28:14]has shrunk they're being replaced by machines and robots and computers so
[28:20]what do we do as humans do we do we go with
[28:24]this flow it's a decision that we make right how did people
[28:30]invent computers and Technology we didn't wake up one morning and and
[28:33]we had all of this technology in front of us right it's
[28:38]a conscious decision that humans have made they can also make a
[28:43]conscious decision of rejecting this okay not everything that we can invent
[28:47]we should have as human beings the atomic bomb is an invention
[28:50]it's a possibility right should we have invented the atomic bomb no
[28:55]would the world have been a better place if we did not
[29:00]have atomic bombs yes of course it would have been weapons of
[29:03]mass destruction would the world have been better if we didn't have
[29:07]a bomb that you can drop on one area and kill thousands
[29:09]of people at once yes the world would have been a much
[29:14]better place not everything that we can do we should do so
[29:18]as Muslims who are aware of this and have teachings in the
[29:23]Quran and from the prophet and the imams that tell us that
[29:26]we have to live a life of meaning a life of orientation
[29:35]turn your face towards the religion of God this is your orientation
[29:45]you shouldn't be moving chaotically with no goal in front of you
[29:49]every day you wake up my goal is known I want to
[29:53]move towards Allah subhana wa tala I want to perfect myself this
[29:56]is my goal I'm not someone who wakes up in in the
[30:00]morning and doesn't know what to do sometimes I think I want
[30:03]to improve my career sometimes I think I want to do this
[30:05]in my life sometimes I want to do that yes these are
[30:08]all good if they're moving towards Allah subhana wa tala you need
[30:11]a goal in your life you need an orientation as a human
[30:15]being you can't live chaotically you can't live without a goal otherwise
[30:19]you're going to be going through fluctuating emotions every single day so
[30:26]Orient yourself as a Muslim Community we should be the ones who
[30:33]are developing solutions to human problems everywhere you go everybody has mental
[30:39]health issues all of us even the psychiatrists have mental health issues
[30:44]everyone the doctor and the patient all of us have issues right
[30:51]what are these the result of is that the result of us
[30:55]not living the way we should be living or is this just
[31:00]a natural thing that humans have because there's an argument on both
[31:03]sides right you know you tell people how come 50 100 years
[31:07]ago there wasn't so many issues like they are today they'll tell
[31:10]you what people weren't aware of these problems people had them but
[31:14]we didn't have names for them that might be true for some
[31:21]things yes but it's not true for everything no because we know
[31:23]people who are living in different nations who have not been exposed
[31:27]to to a lot of things that we're exposed to over here
[31:32]and honestly they're living a very good life a lot of people
[31:34]are deciding to leave as well every time you have your phone
[31:39]in your hand from morning to night and you're going through reals
[31:41]and you're going through all this imagery and colors and things that
[31:44]are bombarding your brain all the time that doesn't have any influence
[31:47]on you doesn't have any effect on you of course it does
[31:51]so what do we do as Muslims we have to be the
[31:57]Pioneers we have to change things we have to bring about solutions
[32:00]to people everybody in this community is supposed to be an inventor
[32:05]an artist in their own right Allah subhana T created every individual
[32:09]unique in this world all of you you have your own week
[32:15]of own method and your unique method of expressing yourself Allah created
[32:20]you special for who you are each and every one of you
[32:26]is an artwork of God and God wants you to show that
[32:28]artwork how by reflecting it in the way you live and how
[32:35]you benefit other people so as a community we need more people
[32:38]who are able to develop their talents in this regard to encourage
[32:42]people okay we have people that suffer from so and so problems
[32:47]let us develop this course for them let us go out and
[32:53]learn things that really bring good to the society we have to
[32:56]be Pioneers in this regard we we can't always be the ones
[33:00]who are following other people and imitating other people whatever is thrown
[33:04]on us we take with no thinking whatever is Flowing we go
[33:12]with it we go with the flow now as Muslims those who
[33:16]have this Dean of we have to be ahead of everybody if
[33:20]humans are going in the wrong direction we have to fix that
[33:24]how well there's many ways to do that firstly we have to
[33:31]focus on ourselves to understand what the human problem is to go
[33:34]back to our Quran to go back to the Hadith and in
[33:38]this month you're reading the Quran every single day inshallah maybe you
[33:42]can't read a whole chapter or J but anything that you read
[33:48]any page when you read it this month try to read it
[33:50]consciously don't try to finish the book just like that it's very
[33:55]good to finish the whole Quran but it's even better to read
[33:59]the Quran consciously think about what is God trying to say in
[34:03]this verse because in ouri people used to come to the IMs
[34:10]and tell them how is it that every the later imams how
[34:13]is it that every time we read this Quran we feel that
[34:17]it's it's fresh even though it's been 200 years 100 years since
[34:21]the Quran has has been revealed it was revealed to people 100
[34:23]years ago but everybody who reads it feels that it's speaking to
[34:32]them how the IM says that this is the beauty of the
[34:35]Quran it has such a special trait it has an eternal value
[34:41]that no matter who's reading it whether the verse came down now
[34:46]or in a thousand years people read it it's addressing the same
[34:53]problem because it's a human problem the Quran wasn't speaking to people
[34:56]that lived at a certain time only humans are humans whether they
[35:01]lived a thousand years ago or they live now we have the
[35:04]same exact problems the same exact issues yes things on the outside
[35:08]change they didn't have cars before we have cars now but who's
[35:14]driving the car the human who was riding the horse and the
[35:17]camel the human things around this changed but the human is the
[35:23]human and the Quran came to address the human problems what is
[35:27]your issue you man and woman why is your life terrible here
[35:32]what is going to make you suffer it doesn't matter what time
[35:36]you live where you live whether you're in China or you're in
[35:39]Africa or you're in Russia or I don't know why I'm mentioning
[35:43]all those regions that are supposed to be the bad guys in
[35:45]in the news but listen the US South America everybody the Quran
[35:51]is addressed to everyone yes on the outside it was speaking to
[35:55]people that were living at that time but the spirit of the
[36:01]verses is for all of humankind everybody no matter the time no
[36:06]matter the place so when you read the Quran remember that God
[36:09]is the one who fashioned this Quran he created it he revealed
[36:13]it this is these are the words of God and God is
[36:17]not me or you or a human being who is trying to
[36:20]sell you something or trying to convince you about a very mundane
[36:24]or simple idea this is the creator of existence these are his
[36:28]words so when you read them bear in mind who's talking to
[36:31]you if you have someone who's a very big thinker someone you
[36:37]know is very intelligent and smart and they tell you something you
[36:40]would assume that there's some wisdom in what they're saying even if
[36:44]it sounded very simple to you why because you know who's speaking
[36:46]to you no way this intelligent person is telling me this very
[36:53]simple idea so when you read the Quran keep in mind that
[36:55]is Allah subhana is speaking to you that the creator of the
[37:01]universe the one who understands the small things and the large things
[37:04]in the human being every intricate detail inside of us God is
[37:09]aware of so when you read the Quran always keep that in
[37:12]mind what is this being who knows everything about me trying to
[37:19]tell me so read the Quran consciously try to see what the
[37:23]objective is become creative individuals use the teachings of the Quran to
[37:28]bring about about inventions the one who invented the car who invented
[37:30]the the the the ship the airplane whatever it is these were
[37:33]humans who invented them us as Muslims at one period of time
[37:39]we were inventing everything in the scientific world was in the Islamic
[37:42]world but there was a difference the inventions of the Muslim scientists
[37:45]was with purpose was to serve Humanity to bring about goodness in
[37:49]their life and it's about time for us to pick ourselves up
[37:55]again to use the knowledge that we have to improve our lives
[37:58]and the lives of humanity as well I won't take more of
[38:04]your time this is the first night inshallah um we'll see you
[38:06]on on the next nights as well during this month fasting is
[38:12]a challenge and it's very difficult for a lot of us but
[38:14]always keep in mind that fasting is also something that God has
[38:19]ordained inside of us in order for us to purify ourselves and
[38:22]clear our minds I ask Allah subhana tala to bring us the
[38:25]awareness to awaken ourselves awaken our souls [Applause]
