[0:32]respected brothers and sisters assalamu alaikum last night we spoke about the
[0:41]beauty of the month of ramadan and we said that it is
[0:43]a month like no other month during the year and we spoke
[0:49]about the sermon of rasulullah sallallahu alaihi wa sallam about the merits
[0:54]of the month of ramadan now probably the most beautiful or the
[1:00]most unique aspect i would say of the month of ramadan is
[1:04]fasting siyam the fact that we no longer eat and drink during
[1:09]the day we can only eat and drink during the night you
[1:12]know it's a complete transformation or a change in our lives because
[1:18]remember before ramadan all we do is we eat during the day
[1:21]we don't eat during the night and especially when the nights are
[1:25]long or when the days are long like these days we don't
[1:29]eat anything during the night even our dinner many of us is
[1:32]during the day but all of a sudden when the month of
[1:35]ramadan begins we have to completely stop eating all those meals breakfast
[1:41]lunch and dinner during the day and we have to move to
[1:45]the night and all our meals either one meal iftar or some
[1:48]people they'll have as well it will be all during the night
[1:52]so fasting is a very unique factor and aspect of the month
[1:56]of ramadan now the hadith of they have spoken to us about
[2:02]the benefits of fasting i'll mention this as a as a prerequisite
[2:08]or introduction so that inshaallah we can speak about taqwa which is
[2:12]one of the greatest benefits of fasting the hadith of ahlul baytiss
[2:16]alaihi musalam they tell us about the benefits of fasting if i
[2:19]were to ask you why do you fast every individual will have
[2:23]a different reason some individuals they may fast because it's just the
[2:27]ritual that everyone else is doing my father is fasting my family
[2:31]is fasting my friends are fasting i was born to fast during
[2:35]the month of ramadan but why do i do it they don't
[2:38]know beyond this what are the benefits what am i really trying
[2:41]to achieve after thirty days of fasting they have no clue it's
[2:45]just thirty days of starvation for some individuals when we go to
[2:50]the hadith of ahlul bayt the imams of ahlul bayt they tell
[2:53]us about some of the benefits of fasting and i will mention
[2:56]five inshaallah four tonight and the fifth one we'll speak about tomorrow
[3:00]the first benefit of fasting which is probably an obvious benefit is
[3:04]reward allah has a has promised a great reward for fasting a
[3:11]hadith of imam ali alaihi salam states he says that whoever fast
[3:27]during the month of ramadan because of his faith because of his
[3:32]iman and belief in allah so he does it purely for god
[3:35]because allah has required this and he does not break his fast
[3:39]with haram i don't break my fast eating some haram food then
[3:44]allah will give you the greatest reward of allah will be given
[3:50]to the one that fast and the rasulullah spoke about paradise i
[4:02]can't even explain to you how great it is the prophet says
[4:04]it is beyond anything you have seen or heard and it is
[4:08]beyond your imagination so this is number one when i fast the
[4:12]most obvious and first benefit of fasting is the reward and the
[4:15]greatest reward of allah has promised for fasting as imam ali says
[4:20]paradise that's number one number two the second benefit of fasting is
[4:25]that fasting forgives us of our sins it erases your sins there
[4:31]are certain rituals that also have this same outcome for example salah
[4:38]according to the hadith of the holy prophet is when you when
[4:40]you pray to allah your five daily prayers one benefit of your
[4:45]five daily prayers is that each prayer erases your sins from the
[4:49]last prayer till now so for example when you pray if you
[4:54]had committed sins after they will all be erased if you had
[5:01]committed any sins from the tell allah will erase all your sins
[5:07]it's five times a day that allah has give us an up
[5:11]given us an opportunity to erase our sins and there's a famous
[5:14]hadith of the prophet he gives the analogy the example of someone
[5:18]taking a shower five times a day it's a famous hadith he
[5:22]says imagine if someone lived by a river and five times a
[5:24]day he took a shower would he be dirty would there be
[5:27]any dirt on his body of course not he would be the
[5:29]cleanest individual nobody takes five showers a day even now now back
[5:33]then that was even more strange but now even with the you
[5:37]know advancement of water and so easy to take a shower in
[5:40]your home nobody takes five showers showers a day so the prophet
[5:44]keeps your soul clean from all the spiritual diseases viruses and stains
[5:51]likewise has the same desired effect al imam says in one hadith
[5:57]whoever fasts during the month of ramadan as ramadan finishes allah will
[6:03]shave away all of the sins that burden that person's back such
[6:07]that when ramadan finishes that person will be like you'll be like
[6:14]a newborn a newborn that has absolutely no sins this is what
[6:18]ramadan does to us and you know this term usually we read
[6:22]about it where in hajj people go to hajj they say i
[6:27]want to go to hajj so that i stand in the desert
[6:29]of arafat and i ask allah for his forgiveness because the hadith
[6:34]tell us that whoever goes to hajj and stands in arafat allah
[6:38]will erase their sins they will be they will be like a
[6:41]newborn likewise if you fast for allah during the month of ramadan
[6:46]says allah will take away all your sins and there's a similar
[6:51]hadith from al imam where he said that every night of the
[6:56]month of ramadan allah frees thousands of people from he frees them
[7:01]from the fires of he forgives them of their sins every night
[7:06]until the last night of ramadan the last night of ramadan allah
[7:11]will free as many people from the fires of hell as he
[7:15]did throughout the month so however much he freed throughout the month
[7:19]he will free that much just during one night and that is
[7:22]the night the last night of the month of ramadan so this
[7:25]is the second benefit of fasting brothers and sisters every day when
[7:28]we are fasting yes it's difficult yes we struggle but it's worth
[7:32]it not only are you getting that great reward which is al
[7:34]jannah the paradise the ultimate grand prize of god but allah has
[7:39]also because you're struggling and you're going through hardships allah will forgive
[7:44]us of all our sins just because we are fasting this is
[7:47]number two number three a third benefit of fasting is a physical
[7:52]benefit you see is for your soul and it's also for your
[7:57]body the hadith of the prophet says what does that mean the
[8:02]prophet says fast so that you can reap the health benefits there
[8:06]are health benefits for your body allah wants your body to be
[8:11]healthy some fasting is one of the ways that leads you to
[8:15]having a healthy lifestyle and a healthy body a couple of weeks
[8:20]ago i'm sure many of you read this it was all over
[8:22]the news the cdc they released the leading causes of death for
[8:27]the year 2020 what was what number was covid everyone's eye was
[8:33]on covid right because it killed so many people covid was the
[8:36]third cause of death number three it killed almost three hundred forty
[8:41]five thousand people in the year 2020 and we were so afraid
[8:45]of it right but it was number three there was another cause
[8:49]that killed twice as much people as covid what was it does
[8:54]anyone remember heart disease you could read it cdc leading causes of
[8:59]death heart disease killed twice as much people in the year 2020
[9:04]than covid did everyone is afraid of covid but we're not really
[9:08]too afraid of heart disease right covid changed our lives but all
[9:12]this sickness all these diseases and death because of heart problems it's
[9:16]not really changing our lives almost seven hundred thousand people i believe
[9:21]it was six hundred ninety thousand people they died because of heart
[9:24]disease now why do people die of heart disease i know we
[9:27]have doctors that know more about this than me but this is
[9:30]general knowledge one of the leading causes of heart disease is what
[9:35]is food isn't it when you eat fatty food when we eat
[9:39]these you know processed foods sugars it leads to so many problems
[9:44]it leads to you know you have high cholesterol and then your
[9:47]arteries start to get blocked and this is why people die because
[9:51]of their heart this is one of the main causes of heart
[9:53]disease it's because of food so food brothers and sisters is very
[9:57]dangerous it leads to obesity and now they say obesity is either
[10:02]the leading preventable cause of death or number two after smoking it's
[10:06]easily preventable now some diseases they're not easily preventable like cancer you
[10:12]can't really prevent it it just happens and you don't really know
[10:14]why it happened but obesity and the problems that it leads to
[10:18]like diabetes right it also could be caused because of eating too
[10:23]much or because of bad health you know bad diet and cholesterol
[10:27]high blood pressure all these things they are caused by food and
[10:31]that's easily preventable we can easily prevent it and this is why
[10:35]the hadith of the prophet and the imams it's mentioned by more
[10:38]than one of the they say this the stomach of yours it
[10:46]is literally what the imam is saying it's the house of disease
[10:49]it's the house of sickness meaning it's the source of many of
[10:52]your diseases many problems that we have in our lives many health
[10:56]problems is because of our food it's either because we don't exercise
[11:00]or because of your food your food is not healthy it's junk
[11:04]food that we're eating processed food that we're eating or we're we're
[11:07]eating too much food and that's why the second part of the
[11:10]hadith says which is to diet to watch out to monitor your
[11:16]food don't eat too much don't eat unhealthy foods eat healthy foods
[11:20]right eat fruits and vegetables and foods that aren't processed this is
[11:25]this is the imam says this is the key to your pureness
[11:31]to your well-being so you have to watch out for what you
[11:34]eat and this is where ramadan comes into play the holy prophet
[11:38]says for eleven months we eat eat eat eat too much ramadan
[11:43]says take a break brother sister you've been eating too much for
[11:48]one month let yourself relax let your stomach relax give it some
[11:53]time to breathe now unfortunately sometimes you know when iftar comes we
[11:57]make up for all those three meals that we missed and even
[11:59]more some people they stuff food in their mouth you know in
[12:03]the end of their iftar meal they can't breathe i hear some
[12:05]brothers i can't breathe after because they eat so much now of
[12:09]course this all those benefits that we gain during the day were
[12:13]just you know destroying it at night we don't need that much
[12:16]food but subhanallah when you're hungry sometimes you lose track so we
[12:19]need a break at least once during the year don't eat too
[12:23]much because all this food will lead to so much problems for
[12:27]you when you grow up now you're young thus once you hit
[12:30]the age of 40 45 50 i've seen so many people it's
[12:34]all problems you have to take all these medications because you have
[12:37]high blood pressure because you have cholesterol because you have this diabetes
[12:41]that so yam teaches us to be moderate to always live with
[12:46]moderation that's why the hadith of imam ali says do not leave
[12:50]do not you know leave unless you you want more food when
[12:53]you're dining when you're eating do not get up unless you want
[12:56]more basically says don't eat until you halal you can't you're full
[13:00]your stomach hurts no reach a level where you've had enough but
[13:04]you still want a little more you still crave a little more
[13:07]stop so don't get too full because all that excess food that
[13:11]you're eating you're destroying your health in the long run so ramadan
[13:16]teach us to relax recently a couple of months ago i met
[13:19]someone he's in his sixties he used to have diabetes and he
[13:24]told me that recently i've been cured of my diabetes so i
[13:28]asked him how he said i fast every day but not the
[13:31]you know the ramadan fasting it's just a health you know a
[13:34]diet that he's doing he says i eat one meal a day
[13:38]i eat just one meal a day and i think he says
[13:41]he eats it around two or 03:00 and that's it it's a
[13:43]pretty big meal not too big just enough so that he can
[13:46]live he says alhamdulillah i did that for a couple of weeks
[13:49]or months i went to the doctor my diabetes is cured so
[13:54]many of the diseases we have it's because of food i remember
[13:58]once i saw a video of a health nutritionist expert he said
[14:02]for the last twenty five years i never got sick this is
[14:06]what he claimed i never got sick how you don't need any
[14:09]medication you don't need any vaccine he just said one thing he
[14:12]said watch out what you eat for he says i never eat
[14:15]sugars sugars i never eat unless it's natural probably from fruits but
[14:21]the you know from soda and cake and all this junk food
[14:24]he says i never go i never eat any of that and
[14:26]i don't eat processed foods just healthy foods he says i've been
[14:30]doing that for twenty five years i never get sick i don't
[14:33]get the cold i don't get the this is a couple of
[14:35]years ago before covid he says i don't get the the flu
[14:39]i don't get sick at all so he may be exaggerating a
[14:42]little that he never gets sick but the point is if you
[14:45]try it your immune system will become stronger and you won't get
[14:48]sick so that's why the hadith says your the food that we
[14:54]eat is the source of all our health problems so during the
[14:58]month of ramadan we take a break so this is number three
[15:02]remember during ramadan it's not only giving you benefits for your soul
[15:06]but also for your body so this was benefit number three of
[15:23]fasting benefit number four of fasting is what is fasting teaches us
[15:29]to be more empathetic and compassionate with poor individuals you know of
[15:36]the biggest problems of the world today is poverty is it because
[15:40]there's not enough wealth to go around no brothers and sisters there's
[15:43]so much wealth in this world it's enough for everyone to live
[15:46]a good decent life the problem is they call it the inequal
[15:51]distribution of wealth there are handful of people that own too much
[15:56]billionaires multi billionaires millionaires and multimillionaires and then there are people that
[16:02]can barely live there's people that live on less than a $100
[16:06]a month millions of them throughout the world they live on less
[16:10]than $100 a month so there's an unequal distribution of wealth and
[16:15]there's so much resources that are wasted even us unfortunately sometimes we
[16:20]do israf we cook more food than we need we order more
[16:23]than we need what do we do with the rest because we
[16:25]don't like to eat leftovers right we're spoiled we throw all of
[16:29]it away unfortunately and there's people that are dying brothers and sisters
[16:33]they're dying for just you know just a little bit of food
[16:36]just to stay alive so ramadan teaches us to be a little
[16:41]empathetic to be compassionate with the poor you see you won't care
[16:46]for a poor individual unless you build empathy for them empathy means
[16:50]what means you feel what they feel and we can never build
[16:54]empathy unless we taste the bitterness of hunger if i give you
[16:59]10 lectures every night this ramadan about the miseries and the plight
[17:03]of the poor people of the world you're not gonna be too
[17:07]motivated yes maybe it's a little motivation but it's not gonna be
[17:12]like if you yourself feel hunger when you feel the agony when
[17:16]you suffer this is when you start to be what to sympathize
[17:20]that's why if there's someone that has cancer we just hear about
[17:24]his problems his suffering his plight we don't really sympathize unless i
[17:29]myself go through what they did what they went through if you
[17:32]see someone that has family problems he has a problem with his
[17:35]spouse she has a problem with her husband he has a problem
[17:38]with his son with his daughter family issues right unless you felt
[17:42]it yourself you're not really gonna sympathize with that person with every
[17:47]single problem this is how we human beings are once it's about
[17:50]me subhanallah we're selfish once i feel that problem this is when
[17:56]i start to become an advocate and i start to sympathize and
[17:59]i start to feel what other people feel and that's why you
[18:03]know i always mention this example of you know and there are
[18:08]some ni'am here there are some luxuries i call them they're not
[18:12]just basics they're luxuries that we take them for granted we don't
[18:15]even know they exist one of them brothers and sisters is what
[18:18]electricity right we have power all the time power is never shut
[18:24]down here we have constant twenty four hour power you can watch
[18:28]tv your refrigerator works your tv your internet works lights if it's
[18:34]cold in the winter you you can have the heat on if
[18:37]it's hot in the summer you can have the ac on this
[18:39]is a that we don't understand its existence when do you understand
[18:44]brothers and sisters once you lose power when you go to iraq
[18:48]brothers and sisters in the summer and it's a 120 degrees a
[18:52]130 degrees and you notice constant outages of power constant outage even
[18:58]if you have money money doesn't do anything really for you there
[19:01]because there's no power you have to go buy your own generator
[19:04]and you think it's easy there's so many problems that come with
[19:07]buying a generator you have to hire someone that has to twenty
[19:11]four hours monitor it because you need fuel for it and sometimes
[19:14]i hear there's no fuel because obviously this generator needs fuel you
[19:18]go to the market there's no fuel today you have to stand
[19:21]in a three hour line if you want to buy fuel right
[19:25]and then you have to keep on turning it on turning it
[19:27]on you it needs maintenance it's a biggest headache it's a biggest
[19:32]headache for people that live there in the summer and they have
[19:35]no power there when you go to iraq in the summer this
[19:38]is when you realize what you were in when you had twenty
[19:41]four hours and not just iraq many countries i know in lebanon
[19:44]in the south likewise they have so much power outages in other
[19:47]parts of the world this is a that we don't when do
[19:50]you start to sympathize with someone when you hear all people of
[19:53]iraq have no electricity when you yourself feel it when you yourself
[19:57]go in the summer and you feel the pain of the heat
[20:01]this is when you start to sympathize or else when i'm sitting
[20:04]under my ac in the summer here i'm not gonna sympathize with
[20:07]someone i'm i'm happy i'm comfortable under the ac i'm not gonna
[20:11]sympathize with someone you know having to deal with this problem on
[20:15]a daily basis so when we suffer ourselves when we feel what
[20:19]other feels this leads to what this builds empathy inside us we
[20:25]start caring about others that leads to what we want to change
[20:28]we want to help them the hadith of ahlul bayt tell us
[20:31]this is the point of fasting we fast so that we feel
[20:35]hunger because remember brothers and sisters if it wasn't for ramadan some
[20:39]of us we never get hungry recently someone was telling me i
[20:43]was trying to remember before ramadan when was the last time i
[20:46]got hungry like really hungry not just normal hunger right it's like
[20:50]i can't even remember for the last months probably five six months
[20:54]i cannot even remember the last time i was really hungry just
[20:57]waiting for food because we wake up we eat after a couple
[21:01]of hours just as we're getting hungry we have lunch couple of
[21:04]hours we're getting hungry we have dinner before sleep we slip some
[21:07]you know some desserts we're eating the entire day there's never a
[21:11]time that we're really hungry until ramadan comes i wake up seven
[21:16]six some people five eight nine whenever in the morning and then
[21:20]i have to refrain from food for twelve hours this is when
[21:24]i feel the bitterness of hunger what happens this develops inside me
[21:30]that empathy oh no there's people that have to go through this
[21:33]every day every single day says this in a hadith he says
[21:44]so that the wealthy that have all the means and resources they
[21:48]will be just like the poor individuals they both cannot eat the
[21:51]poor cannot eat because he does not have food the rich cannot
[21:54]eat because he can't because allah has forbidden him during the day
[21:57]so allah wants us what the imam says that he does that
[22:01]so that the rich individuals can feel some of the hunger that
[22:05]the poor people feel because when i'm wealthy anytime i want anything
[22:18]i can just go and buy it i have it it's all
[22:20]there at my disposal but in the month of ramadan allah tells
[22:24]me don't eat when i feel that hunger i begin to sympathize
[22:27]with the poor when i begin to sympathize with them what do
[22:30]i do i go and help them so this month brothers and
[22:33]sisters the month of ramadan we have to think why am i
[22:37]starving why is allah asking me not to eat and drink so
[22:40]you can think about the less fortunate because at the end of
[22:43]the day it doesn't matter how hungry you are before maghrib when
[22:46]it's seven 07:30 right when it's 08:00 you know at the end
[22:50]of the day you're gonna go and your iftar will be ready
[22:54]your wife will have cooked you the best food your mother your
[22:57]whoever cooks for you or you're you're a cook for example alhamdulillah
[23:01]you have delivery door dash whatever you guys have you have the
[23:04]best food waiting at 08:30 08:35 but you have to remember there
[23:09]are people brothers and sisters in the muslim world and all across
[23:12]the world when it's time there are fast continues because they have
[23:16]nothing to eat they don't have anything do you know how difficult
[23:20]this is brothers and sisters especially when i am a father and
[23:24]my i have children i have to feed them and i can't
[23:26]feed them allah this completely breaks the heart of the father of
[23:30]the mother their children come and they're hungry and you can't feed
[23:33]them in ramadan this is a that when it's a i can
[23:36]have all the foods that i love and that's why the prophet
[23:39]said let this feeling of hunger lead to action the prophet said
[23:44]in his sermon about ramadan he said what this is the month
[23:51]of brothers and sisters it's the month of charity you have felt
[23:55]the bitterness and the pain of being hungry imagine if this was
[23:59]your life every single day and iftar time there was nothing for
[24:02]you to feed your family what would happen to you that's why
[24:05]use this opportunity to help other people throughout the muslim world the
[24:09]hadith the prophet then continued in a sermon he said if you
[24:15]give food for a for someone that's fasting so that they can
[24:18]have iftar with allah the prophet says we'll give you the of
[24:22]as if you have freed a slave and he will forgive you
[24:27]of all your past sins so let us remember brothers and sisters
[24:31]that during this month of ramadan how much allah is merciful with
[24:35]us how much he's kind with us that when it's i can
[24:38]eat whatever i want not everyone in the muslim world is fortunate
[24:43]couple of days ago i saw a video they sent in lebanon
[24:48]no lebanon wasn't a poor country and when you think of poor
[24:52]countries you think of other countries in africa right or in india
[24:55]or somewhere lebanon was not a poor country but subhanallah what happened
[24:59]to them as we say just overnight they had to suffer so
