[0:22]respected brothers and sisters i would like to begin by wishing you

[0:33]all a happy thanksgiving and we pray and we ask allah subhanahu

[0:38]wa ta'ala to bless you all and to grant you your wishes

[0:42]and your prayers and to remove this virus this covet 19 virus

[0:52]that has altered and changed our lives for about a year now

[0:55]a little bit less than a year now and it has changed

[1:02]even our interactions even our thanksgiving gatherings even our holidays our travel

[1:10]schedule so i've seen many people they are showing words of you

[1:16]know turning saying this year has not been a good year for

[1:21]us 2020 has not been a blessed year for us some people

[1:25]are complaining but the fact of the matter my dear brothers and

[1:29]sisters is that we have to always be thankful we shouldn't just

[1:34]be thankful one day out of the year we have to be

[1:40]thankful especially this year we have to be extra thankful if we

[1:43]are alive if we're healthy if we have a roof over our

[1:49]head if we have family that we are sitting with that we're

[1:53]gathering with this is this is something that we have to be

[1:55]extra thankful for and we have to show thanks to allah subhanahu

[2:01]wa ta'ala first and foremost we have to thank allah subhanahu wa

[2:04]ta'ala we have to show our things with words with action because

[2:10]it is allah subhanahu wa ta'ala who has given us everything that

[2:15]we have everything that we need allah continues to give us we

[2:21]have to show thanks to the people in our lives to our

[2:25]families to our loved ones to our spouses to our parents to

[2:31]our children our siblings we have to appreciate people in our lives

[2:34]there are some people they're celebrating thanksgiving with someone who they were

[2:40]with last year is not around anymore because of covid or because

[2:44]of some other reason so appreciate those individuals that you have in

[2:50]your life and i would also like to show our appreciation to

[2:56]the first care responders the front line workers the health care workers

[3:00]those individuals the nurses and the doctors the hospital staff those individuals

[3:08]who have put their lives at risk who have left their own

[3:11]families perhaps they don't spend time celebrating holidays with their own families

[3:15]to keep you and i and other people safe and healthy so

[3:21]we have to thank them we have to show appreciation to them

[3:24]the hadith says the one who does not show appreciation and thanks

[3:33]to the creator this person has not shown thanks and appreciation the

[3:38]one who does not excuse me the one who does not show

[3:40]appreciation and thanks to the created this person does not show appreciation

[3:46]to the creator to allah so here in the united states and

[3:54]in other countries although it's at a different day some they choose

[3:58]one day out of the year to make it be a a

[4:04]day of thanksgiving a day of showing thanks and a day of

[4:07]showing appreciation and this is one of the good holidays this is

[4:09]one of the better holidays that we have where it's a time

[4:14]to appreciate people in our lives a time to appreciate the blessings

[4:17]that allah has given us although we see that you know it's

[4:25]called thanksgiving but many people they're they're just focused on food and

[4:29]they're focused on shopping and that kind of brings brings us away

[4:33]from the objective of being thankful now some people you could also

[4:40]be thankful at the same time and enjoy a good meal and

[4:42]buy whatever you need there's nothing wrong with that however we have

[4:49]to be thankful every day in our lives from an islamic perspective

[4:53]every day and every second in our lives we have to show

[4:57]appreciation we have to show things because everything that we have in

[5:02]our life is a blessing allah says in the quran if you

[5:08]sit and you try to count down the blessings that allah has

[5:13]given you in your life you'll not be able to count them

[5:19]so show thanks show appreciation it doesn't have to be one day

[5:22]out of the year that we choose to show things in islam

[5:24]we have to show thanks every day we have to acknowledge the

[5:30]blessings of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala and allah says only a few

[5:35]people waka lilon only if you from my servants from the people

[5:39]are truly thankful let us make ourselves individuals who are always thankful

[5:47]who are sincerely and genuinely thankful to allah to others in our

[5:54]lives now there are multiple ways of showing appreciation there are multiple

[5:57]ways of showing thanks and being grateful but it begins with one

[6:05]and that is acknowledging what you have in your life as a

[6:12]blessing because if you don't acknowledge what you have is a blessing

[6:14]then you're not going to be thankful for it so it has

[6:19]to begin with acknowledging and appreciating the blessings that you have just

[6:24]by acknowledging them and that is the greatest way of being thankful

[6:28]and being grateful it is said that in a hadith that from

[6:35]from imam sadaqa he says allah spoke to musa allah revealed to

[6:41]prophet musa he tells him i want you to thank me in

[6:51]the way that i deserve to be thanked the haqq give the

[6:56]heck of allah subhanahu ta'ala how can i thank you the way

[7:06]you deserve to be thanked he says anything that i use to

[7:19]thank you you have given me that blessing so for example if

[7:21]i thank you with my tongue this tongue is a gift from

[7:26]allah subhana ta'ala the ability to speak if i thank you with

[7:28]my hands if i thank you with wealth with whatever i have

[7:31]this is all from you so how can i come and truly

[7:35]show appreciation when everything that i have is from you once musa

[7:42]said that allah you have appreciated me and you have shown thanks

[7:52]when you know and acknowledge that everything that you have is from

[7:57]me so let us acknowledge the blessings in our lives let us

[8:02]acknowledge that we are drowning in the blessings of allah subhanahu wa

[8:05]ta'ala wherever we look we have blessings even if you're sick even

[8:09]if you're going through some difficulty some financial difficulties some health difficulty

[8:13]some issues in your life you have so much blessings so many

[8:18]things to be thankful for and when we acknowledge that we have

[8:25]a blessing in our lives then you realize that you are blessed

[8:30]through those blessings so for example if i have children i say

[8:33]my children are a blessing from allah to me and then i

[8:38]would realize that i am blessed through my children if i have

[8:42]my spouse if i have my parents if i have my job

[8:46]if i have neighbors anyone if i acknowledge that they are a

[8:49]source of blessing in my life then i will realize that i

[8:52]am blessed through them so that will make me appreciate them more

[8:56]that will make me show thanks to them more and therefore i

[9:01]would be treating them better and my akhlaq my manners all of

[9:04]that will change this is one when we begin to acknowledge see

[9:09]how much it changes your life it changes your attitude your perspective

[9:13]second a great way of showing appreciation is by using words by

[9:23]saying alhamdulillah show thanks to allah subhanahu ta'ala through your words now

[9:29]some people might say what's what's the significance of words what does

[9:33]word mean no when no one hears you allah subhanahu ta'ala hears

[9:36]you when you say alhamdulillah and we should make it a habit

[9:41]after any blessing in our life any blessing whatever it is even

[9:45]if it's something that we might regard as insignificant allah a group

[9:57]of people that go to paradise because of the words that they

[10:02]said just because of their words allah takes them to paradise so

[10:07]don't underestimate a word words of appreciation words of gratitude words of

[10:17]gratefulness allah says in the quran allah rewards them gardens in paradise

[10:23]because of the words that they said so sometimes all it could

[10:27]be is saying alhamdulillah thank you o allah thank allah subhanahu wa

[10:33]ta'ala make it a habit to say alhamdulillah don't underestimate the statement

[10:37]alhamdulillah we begin the greatest chapter in the quran what do we

[10:44]begin it with we begin it with wants us to always remind

[10:54]ourselves in every prayer we recite surat al-fatiha want us to remind

[11:01]ourselves let me be thankful let me be grateful all praise is

[11:05]due to allah subhanahu wa ta'ala it is said that one day

[11:13]imam said he came out of the masjid he had a a

[11:17]horse or a mule or something he was riding on it went

[11:22]it went away it got lost so imam said in front of

[11:28]his companions he says he says if god returns it back to

[11:37]me i will thank allah in the way that god deserves to

[11:40]be thanked so a while they came and they brought back the

[11:48]the horse or whatever the imam was writing so what does the

[11:53]imam do the imam he says alhamdulillah all that he says is

[11:57]alhamdulillah all praise is due to allah one of his companions tells

[12:05]him the man was surprised he says oh my master o my

[12:14]imam didn't you say i will so i will show appreciation to

[12:17]allah in a way that god is worthy of that the imam

[12:21]said yes i said alhamdulillah and by saying alhamdulillah that is giving

[12:28]allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that is saying yes i appreciate allah i

[12:32]thank allah subhanahu ta'ala that is one of the greatest ways of

[12:37]showing thanks and allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says if you show thanks

[12:42]we will give you paradise second when you show thanks when you

[12:51]say thanks this is this is one of the keys to success

[12:59]in life they don't teach you this in economics they don't teach

[13:04]you this and and you know classes in the universities this is

[13:08]one of the secrets of allah one of the one of the

[13:11]sunnah of this life allah says in the quran if you say

[13:20]thanks to allah subhanahu ta'ala will give you of course yes when

[13:26]you show things you're not just saying thank you you're saying thank

[13:30]you but you're acting thank you you're taking care of what you

[13:32]have which we will talk about and that the blessings will continue

[13:37]one day imam said another story from imam sadaq he was the

[13:42]the hadith says he was in hajj and he was sitting in

[13:46]the tent either in minna in arafat he was sitting in the

[13:51]tent and a and the imam had a plate of of grapes

[13:55]and the imam was eating grapes so a man a beggar comes

[14:00]and he begins to beg he begins to tell the imam i

[14:06]want something give me something so the imam alaihi salaam imam he

[14:11]took the whole plate of grapes and he came to offer it

[14:16]to that person that person said no i don't want i don't

[14:18]want this you know there are some some people who they ask

[14:22]but they're picky they say no i want this and i want

[14:24]that they're very picky and they're not being thankful so the imam

[14:29]salaam once he once he saw that this man he refused the

[14:33]the the plate the imam tells him may allah subhanahu ta'ala gives

[14:38]you and this is the least thing you could do for someone

[14:40]who's asking if you can't give them if you don't have what

[14:44]they're what they what they want or they don't take it then

[14:46]do do offer them do do offer them pray for them the

[14:50]companions they saw that a while later after that man left another

[14:59]man came and he began to ask imam this time imam sadak

[15:02]he took a piece of the of the grapes you know a

[15:06]small a small piece and he handed it to the man the

[15:10]man he took it he began to eat and he said alhamdulillah

[15:16]once the man said alhamdulillah the imam alayhi he tells his companions

[15:25]there is a money there's a bag of money go and bring

[15:29]it for him so they go and they bring the bag of

[15:31]money they come and they bring it to the man the man

[15:34]he sees the money he takes it and he says alhamdulillah and

[15:38]then the imam alayhis he tells them there's an outfit there's an

[15:42]outfit in the tent go and give it to this person so

[15:45]they come and they bring the outfit to the person he takes

[15:49]it he says alhamdulillah and he leaves so the companions of imam

[15:53]sadaq they were shocked they tell him o abba abdullah the first

[15:57]man he asked you he didn't want the day he didn't want

[16:02]the grapes and you told him that's it but this man you

[16:05]kept giving him and giving him and giving him more the imam

[16:11]alaihissalam he said i gave him because i saw that he was

[16:12]grateful because i saw that he said alhamdulillah he was grateful to

[16:19]allah and therefore this person is worthy of receiving more and if

[16:24]he would have stayed asking i would have given him the whole

[16:29]tent meaning that the imam alaihissalam he was willing to give him

[16:31]even more but the man he left so if you show thanks

[16:43]and appreciation i will give you more and if you don't then

[16:48]the punishment and the wrath of allah is severe so here we

[16:51]see that shukur is on one side being thankful and kufur blasphemy

[16:55]is on the other side the opposite of appreciation is kufur blasphemy

[17:01]and not believing and allah and these say words of appreciation are

[17:09]not only with allah subhanahu ta'ala we should say it with allah

[17:13]say alhamdulillah after every prayer it's recommended to do a sujud a

[17:18]sajdah thanking allah that he gave you the ability to be thankful

[17:23]that he gave you the ability to pray but we should also

[17:29]practice this with people in our lives say thank you if someone

[17:33]did something to you if someone helped you out if someone did

[17:35]a favor to you show appreciation to them and if we if

[17:42]we do that you will see that many of the family problems

[17:44]many of the social problems that we have they will disappear the

[17:49]moment we begin to appreciate the moment we begin to say thank

[17:53]you another very important point third is that when you acknowledge and

[17:58]you are thankful then you will appreciate what you have by taking

[18:04]care of what you have so if i'm grateful for a blessing

[18:10]that allah has given me i'm not just going to acknowledge it

[18:14]i'm not just going to say thank thank you allah i'm going

[18:16]to take care of what i have and the when i begin

[18:20]to take care of it then it will be a greater blessing

[18:23]for me if you have children and you raise them properly and

[18:28]you show appreciation by taking care of them then at the end

[18:32]of your life you will see that this was a good investment

[18:36]if you have a job and you you give your job your

[18:42]100 percent your 100 dedication that means you're taking care of it

[18:45]that means you're appreciating it this job will take care of you

[18:49]this job will be a source of income for you a source

[18:53]of blessing for you if you have a relationship the husband with

[18:56]the wife the wife with the husband with your parents you take

[18:59]care of that relationship you will reap the rewards of that relationship

[19:06]and this is how allah system is if you take care of

[19:09]something allah will keep it for you and it will be a

[19:12]source of blessing for you so if we have wealth let's spend

[19:17]it wisely if we have health if allah subhanahu ta'ala has given

[19:21]me health i have to take care of my health i can't

[19:23]come and put myself in harm's way in the way of danger

[19:29]and taking away that health that allah has given me that's how

[19:36]it stays a blessing and finally my dear brothers and sisters one

[19:42]of the greatest ways of showing appreciation is when we give back

[19:46]give back to what allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given you give

[19:50]back to allah even though god does not need anything from us

[19:54]does not need our zakat our sadaqa our charity our prayer allah

[19:59]has these laws so that we help others out let's give back

[20:03]to people in our lives whether it's food whether it's wealth whether

[20:09]it's knowledge whether it's a gift that allah has given you everyone

[20:13]they have their own unique gifts if god has blessed you with

[20:19]a gift try to give to others don't be a person who's

[20:22]selfish i'm not going to give only if someone gives me or

[20:26]this and that no give back try to give back as much

[20:29]as you can to the community to people around you and you

[20:33]will see that that will be a major source of blessing in

[20:39]your life and in the afterlife one day rasulullah he slaughtered the

[20:45]sheep and they brought the whole sheep and then rasulullah began to

[20:50]you know order give give this family this much give this family

[20:54]give this family so the only thing that was left from the

[20:56]sheep was the shoulder so rasul the wife of the prophet she

[21:01]came and she tells him ya rasool allah all that's left from

[21:04]this whole sheep all that's left is the shoulder rasulallah tells her

[21:09]all that we will all that's gone is the shoulder everything else

[21:14]we will benefit from when you give you will benefit from it

[21:18]in one way or another and in the afterlife that is the

[21:21]greatest benefits but even before the afterlife allah will give you a

[21:24]reward in this life this is the law of this life the

[21:28]sunnah and shakirtom nakum he says that there was a man in

[21:41]bani israel from the israelites who was a worshiper a abid but

[21:46]this person did not have good luck meaning that he works he

[21:50]struggles he works but he doesn't make enough money he doesn't he

[21:54]barely makes his own living so one day he and his wife

[21:58]they were very hungry they're poor they're struggling so his wife she

[22:06]came and she began to knit she made something in the house

[22:09]she tells them go to the market and see if you could

[22:13]sell it see if you could sell it and bring back something

[22:15]for us to eat he goes to the market he sees that

[22:19]the market is closed so then he goes to the fish the

[22:23]fish market where you know the the fishermen they're coming and they're

[22:26]they're bringing the fish he sees that there's no fish left except

[22:30]except um one old fish that looked like it's half rotten probably

[22:36]and a fish that he didn't really he didn't really want to

[22:41]take it but because they're so hungry because they were so struggling

[22:44]he goes and he gives the fisherman that uh whatever his wife

[22:49]made that outfit whatever she had knitted and he takes that fish

[22:52]that looked like it was you know old and it was laying

[22:56]around no one wanted it he goes and he brings the fish

[23:00]to his wife he tells her you know cut the cut the

[23:03]fish up and let's eat that let's see see what you could

[23:06]take out of that so his wife she goes and she cuts

[23:11]the fish open she opens it and she sees there are two

[23:13]pearls in the stomach of the fish you know there are pearls

[23:19]in the ocean so this fish had gone and swallowed these pearls

[23:22]so his wife she comes to him and she tells him look

[23:27]look what i found i found two pearls in the stomach of

[23:31]this fish so he says alhamdulillah this is a blessing from allah

[23:35]for us allah has given us so he goes to the market

[23:39]and he sells these pearls each pearl was sold for 20 000

[23:45]durham's so he comes back home carrying two bags of silver coins

[23:51]one bag has twenty thousand another bag has twenty thousand he goes

[23:55]and he sits down and they're very happy suddenly a knocker knocks

[24:01]on the door he goes and he opens the door and he

[24:05]sees a poor person standing in front of him and he tells

[24:12]him i'm poor give me from what allah has given you see

[24:14]this is a test from allah this is a test from allah

[24:19]so the man what does he do he says there are two

[24:25]bags over there go and take one of the bags and that's

[24:27]it so that poor person goes and takes one of the heavy

[24:35]bags and leaves his wife comes a while later and she tells

[24:37]him what did you do you just came and you gave away

[24:41]half of all that we owned half of all that we have

[24:42]twenty thousand dirhams imagine someone giving twenty thousand dollars they have forty

[24:48]thousand and they ca and he came and he gave away twenty

[24:51]thousand he tells her it is the same lord that gave us

[24:54]he'll be able to give us again have trust in allah subhanahu

[25:00]ta'ala he goes and he sits again a while later the door

[25:04]is knocked again he goes and he sees that it's the same

[25:07]person that person tells him i'm an angel sent from allah subhanahu

[25:15]wa ta'ala to test you to see are you thankful or are

[25:20]you not thankful for the fa allah ordered me to give back

[25:30]these 20 000 dirhams to you because allah saw that you're a

[25:34]thankful person you're a person who's appreciative to allah subhanahu wa take

[25:38]it back and enjoy your wealth and enjoy your life and your

[25:43]afterlife this my dear brothers and sisters is a lesson for us

[25:46]let us give back allah subhanahu ta'ala will place blessings in our

[25:55]life allah says in the quran be turned into action let it

[26:10]be translated into action not just words there are a little a

[26:17]small group of are thankful my dear brothers and sisters once again

[26:21]i would like to congratulate you all and wish you all a

[26:24]happy thanksgiving and i pray that you stay safe you stay socially

[26:30]distanced you take care of yourself and your families and may allah

[26:35]keep you healthy and thankful all the time alhamdulillah was salaam alaikum
