[1:55]imam asada alaihis salam's wife hamid al barbaria was of african origin
[2:02]this would come as a surprise to many who would assume that
[2:06]imam asada alaihis salam would marry someone for example locally from medina
[2:10]or someone from mecca for example he would be like for example
[2:15]imam ali alaihis salam or like imam al hasan alaihis salam or
[2:19]say like imam zain al abideen who married local arab ladies however
[2:28]you find that imam asada alaihis salaam began a trend a trend
[2:33]which was part of a social movement to highlight that the lives
[2:38]of humanity and the people around the world have to find a
[2:44]way in which they honor one another in removing racial tension that
[2:49]may exist because today when we see the killing of george floyd
[2:53]you find that no doubt this is brought about outrage and sent
[2:58]shock waves around the world there are many who are in a
[3:01]state of disbelief when they saw the way george floyd was being
[3:06]treated and hence you saw people from around the world coming together
[3:11]and standing up against what seemed like the continuation of racism and
[3:16]a disease that continues to affect the human being because without a
[3:20]doubt one of the worst diseases that can affect each and every
[3:24]one of us is racism seeing a moment where a person says
[3:29]something or makes a racial comment whether it's at home or in
[3:33]the workplace or in public or in private no doubt is something
[3:39]which is seen as abhorrent in the eyes of many we thought
[3:43]that systematic or systemic racism had in many cases come to an
[3:48]end but the reality is that whether it's systematic racism or systemic
[3:53]racism it still exists one may ask what is the difference between
[3:58]the two in terms of systematic racism you may find for example
[4:04]where an employer makes it clear that there will be no hispanics
[4:08]working in this particular office any application you get from somebody for
[4:15]example from latin america rip up the piece of paper and throw
[4:18]it in the bin that may be seen as being systematic racism
[4:23]where there is no chance whatsoever for someone who comes from a
[4:27]particular racial background in terms of their skin color or in terms
[4:33]of their ethnicity or ethnic group to get a chance for employment
[4:37]in a certain area or to get a chance for a job
[4:41]in a certain position that's been made available then you have systemic
[4:45]racism where you may have for example that the workplace is so
[4:51]much orientated towards a particular group of people that it becomes very
[4:57]hard for others of a different skin color to get a job
[5:00]there sometimes they refer to certain jobs as the white establishment or
[5:06]that you have to have studied at oxford and then eton before
[5:10]you get a job in that place so when they refer to
[5:13]that they're highlighting that okay it may not be clear the racism
[5:17]but it's going to be very unusual for a person to be
[5:21]given or approached for a job in that area when we saw
[5:25]what happened with george floyd it reminded us of the racism that
[5:30]a lot of the black community had faced in america as in
[5:34]when you saw the black lives matter movement without a doubt a
[5:39]person was reminded of what martin luther king had to go through
[5:44]what the likes of baldwin and parks and others had to go
[5:47]through where literally they were not able to sit in the same
[5:52]section as for example the white person on the bus in america
[5:57]or those who were burnt for example by members of the ku
[6:01]klux klan or for example those who in alabama were told that
[6:05]you cannot have an education because your skin color is different to
[6:10]mine we thought that that was part of yesteryear that was part
[6:15]of the 60s for example or that was something that we only
[6:19]saw in hollywood films that happened on cotton fields where members of
[6:23]the black community were racially abused or racially tortured and yet we
[6:27]saw with george floyd again a return a return of the racist
[6:33]language the racist rhetoric the racist outlook where a person found it
[6:40]normal to racially target somebody and even if that person was gasping
[6:47]for breath because more than anything that touched us was when someone
[6:51]tells you that i cannot breathe or a human tells you that
[6:55]i'm hungry or a human tells you that i'm thirsty at that
[6:58]moment automatically you take away all the religions that you confess or
[7:04]you claim to believe in and you come as one humanity that
[7:08]one humanity comes together and says that this is not what should
[7:12]be happening there should be other ways in which a person is
[7:16]able to for example discuss this area without us arrogantly approaching people
[7:23]or forcefully or harshly or in a way which is oppressive therefore
[7:29]when we come to imam asadaq alaihis salam we found that when
[7:32]imam asadaq wanted to get married he married somebody from africa and
[7:38]begun a trend because imam al qadam alaihis salam married someone from
[7:43]africa and imam al rada alaihis salam africa imam al jawad alaihis
[7:48]salam was even seen by his son because of his color they
[7:52]would say that he is someone who is black and if that's
[7:55]the case then the great grandson of imam al jawad imam al
[7:59]hadi is bound to be of that particular complexion would that be
[8:05]a problem for us or not let's discuss tonight the second in
[8:10]our series of lectures on the biography of imam asad alaihi salaam
[8:14]by looking at his wife hamid al barbariya and what lessons can
[8:18]be learned not only from their marriage but its connotations on racism
[8:23]in the world today and i'd like to do this in the
[8:25]following stages number one how did imam asad approach hamid al barabariya
[8:35]number two and of the utmost importance was he the first member
[8:39]of ahlul bayt sallallahu alaihi wasallam who had married a lady from
[8:43]africa number three why the interracial marriage and is this something recommended
[8:50]number four in the muslim community do we have incidents of systematic
[8:55]and systemic racism and if we do is this the same racism
[9:01]that has been witnessed for example in america and how can we
[9:05]evolve in order that the disease of racism does not affect us
[9:10]or affect our children number five how was the wife of imam
[9:16]asada known as a jurist in her own right and what hadiths
[9:21]do we have from her in al kafi of sheikh al kulaini
[9:24]and in bihar al anwar of al majlisi number six which companion
[9:29]of the imam when asking imam asada said to him tell your
[9:32]wife to ask my wife and what possible area of discussion could
[9:37]this lead to in the area of female maraja and shia thought
[9:43]number seven how was she known for her purity as well as
[9:48]her morality and finally when it came to the lady who she
[9:53]helped her son imam al qaalam get married to how did she
[9:58]give birth and what did imam asadaq alaihis salam say about the
[10:02]birth that day and how did she help her son in his
[10:05]marriage let's examine this and dissect the topic in complete depth many
[10:10]do not discuss hamid al barbaria barbaria of course is arabized barbaria
[10:18]is arabized from the berbers the berbers who are normally discussed in
[10:23]relation to northwest africa because when you talk of that region of
[10:28]the berbers you find that some of the most important members of
[10:31]christian history as well as islamic history came from that area of
[10:36]northwest africa sometimes we don't study african history so that we're able
[10:42]to appreciate the heritage of africa the for example or the you
[10:50]had people who are of christian descent such as augustine saint augustine
[10:56]originally from was from that northwest area of africa then you had
[11:01]that that same area was an area from which imam asadak's wife
[11:05]emerged she was the daughter of sa'id al barbari and you found
[11:11]that at the time imam al baqar alaihis salam was sitting imam
[11:16]asadaq was next to him this story is a wonderful story of
[11:20]how imam asadaq alaihi salam got married because imam asadaq alaihi salam
[11:24]was sitting next to his father who was there al qasha bin
[11:28]mahsun al asadaq alaihi was sitting there and he looked towards imam
[11:34]al baqir alaihis salam he said when are you going to get
[11:37]imam asadaq married you know sometimes in your house you always have
[11:41]a friend of the family who will always say come on when
[11:44]are you gonna get married what are you waiting for so akaash
[11:48]ibn masan al asadi he was sitting with imam al baqar alaihis
[11:52]salam he looked towards imam asada alaihis salam and he said to
[11:56]him that when are you going to marry off jafar bin muhammad
[12:01]he's now at the age of marriage imam al baqar alaihis salam
[12:06]had a pouch of money next to him he took out the
[12:09]pouch and he said this money i have reserved and saved for
[12:15]imam saddak's marriage i've kept this on the side because sometimes some
[12:20]families will keep a certain amount of money on the side for
[12:23]their son or their daughter's wedding day they keep it on the
[12:26]side saved up until their son and their daughter get married so
[12:30]he says that i've kept it on the side the day will
[12:34]come when you will know that imam asad alaihis salaam his wife
[12:40]has arrived he said what do you mean he said you will
[12:43]see in those days there were slaves that were being sold from
[12:48]northwest africa who would come and land in medina the ships that
[12:53]would sail towards the hijaz there would be these slaves that would
[12:57]come at the end of the day the slaves were part and
[13:00]parcel the slave industry was still there and these slaves would be
[13:05]sold to work for example in certain households at the time imam
[13:10]al baqir alaihi salam said to uqasha one day the son of
[13:13]masan al asadi he said to him there's going to be a
[13:16]ship that will come with some slaves some of those slaves are
[13:20]male slaves some of those slaves are female slaves i want you
[13:26]to go there and you're going to see somebody who's going to
[13:30]reside in the house of maimun when you go to the house
[13:34]of maimun that person is the one who's selling these slaves the
[13:39]male slaves and the female slaves go there take this pouch which
[13:44]has money inside it and when he asks you for a particular
[13:49]price give him what is sufficient aukashem and masan al asad he
[13:54]says i do not know how much was in that pouch i
[13:58]didn't have a clue how much was in the pouch i went
[14:01]and i had heard that yes there had been a ship that
[14:04]had arrived when the ship had arrived he mentions that when the
[14:10]ship had arrived i asked where the person had gone they said
[14:13]to me he had gone to the house of maimon so he
[14:16]said i went towards the house of maimon while i was in
[14:19]the house this person who was selling the slaves said to me
[14:24]that look i've only got two slave girls left these two if
[14:28]you want to purchase them you're able to purchase them it's up
[14:32]to you he said to him but why were these two not
[14:36]sold to work in somebody's house he said because these two have
[14:40]fallen ill everybody who had purchased these slaves everybody who had purchased
[14:46]them had chosen those who were feeling well who had no issues
[14:52]whereas these two because they were feeling unwell then what happened they
[14:58]were not sold off he said very well how much would you
[15:01]take if we want to take this slave or one of these
[15:05]two he said to him 70 dinar no less no more i'm
[15:11]not gonna take a penny less not a dinar less not a
[15:14]dinar more you give me 70 i'll sell her to you so
[15:19]he looked towards him he said to him listen give us some
[15:21]sort of discount at the end of the day she's not feeling
[15:24]well because he doesn't know how much is in the pouch so
[15:27]he's thinking that you know what let me just make sure that
[15:29]i have enough money so he said to him give us some
[15:32]sort of discount he said to him i'm not giving any discount
[15:35]whatsoever you can forget about it when i have stuck it in
[15:39]my head that it's 70 dinar i'm making 70 dinar so at
[15:43]that moment aukash ibn mas al asadi gave him the pouch he
[15:47]said look count how much is in there and let's see if
[15:50]it's enough it's enough exactly 70 dinar in the pouch that was
[15:57]given to the man ahlul bates salawatallahu alaihi ma'am don't just give
[16:01]you a pouch of money without knowing what's going to happen they
[16:04]know exactly what's in that pouch so what happened was the 70
[16:09]dinar they gave it to him at that moment he said to
[16:12]him which of the two would you recommend he said to him
[16:17]this one in particular is the purest that you'll see yes that's
[16:23]why when you come towards her name one of her names or
[16:27]one of her titles what al musafat al musafat what does it
[16:31]mean al musafat means the pure yes that which is safi when
[16:36]you say something is safi you're saying that this thing is so
[16:40]pure pure from all impurities like what like that gold bullion you
[16:50]know when they say to you this is 24 karat gold you're
[16:54]like yes that's what i want he imam would say that my
[16:59]wife hamidah is what she is somebody who is purified from all
[17:09]impurities don't ever imagine that just because she's a slave that means
[17:14]that there must have been a period of time where someone was
[17:17]really impure and they became pure on the contrary some of those
[17:21]who have gone through hardship in their life you find that they
[17:24]can smile more than us who have lived in ease there are
[17:28]those whose morals who have gone through hardship are higher than our
[17:31]morals who have lived luxuries and comfort all our life imam asadaq
[17:36]alaihis salaam therefore would say that hamida is what that she is
[17:45]pure from all impurities like the gold bullion then what would he
[17:49]say angels have protected hamidah my wife from when from even before
[17:57]she had married me what did we say yesterday the wife of
[18:02]an imam like farooq the wife of imam al baqir or hamidah
[18:06]the wife of imam asadaq they are protected allah subhanahu ta'ala make
[18:10]sure that there are angels that protect them from the very beginning
[18:13]because they know that one day this is going to be a
[18:16]mother of an imam a wife of an imam so therefore he
[18:20]said okay i will take this one with me he came back
[18:23]to imam al baqar's house when he came back imam al baqar
[18:27]was there imam al saddak was there and imam al baqar introduced
[18:31]like you have matchmakers today imam al baqar introduced imam al saddak
[18:35]to hamid jafar my son this is hamid hamid this is jafar
[18:40]we would like to offer a proposal of marriage if you two
[18:43]would accept she said i've accepted from before allah said what do
[18:50]you mean said way before i have even seen you in my
[18:56]dream one day i saw a lamp a moon i saw the
[19:00]moon in my lap when i saw the moon in my lap
[19:05]i knew that this had to have a special significance and of
[19:08]course that moon one day would be imam musa najafar alaihi wasallamu
[19:12]alaihi salaam therefore you found that imam asadaq alaihi salaam wanted to
[19:17]provide for us an example which example the first example he wanted
[19:23]to show those people in africa the best example of the teachings
[19:29]of the religion of islam that's on the first level why because
[19:33]it was after egypt was conquered that they went towards the maghrib
[19:37]and they conquered the area of the barbar who conquered that area
[19:40]the umayyads had conquered that area and these africans may not have
[19:45]been given the teachings of the religion of islam like the teachings
[19:48]of muhammadan al muhammad therefore on the first level imam saddiq alaihis
[19:54]salam in marrying hamida welcomed the people of africa to the purest
[20:00]teachings of al muhammad sallallahu alaihima egypt wasn't conquered necessarily by al
[20:05]al bayt the umayyad expansionalism had gone into north africa into northwest
[20:10]africa and those who read about tarek bin ziyad and others who
[20:13]came later on so you found that imam sadiq alaihis salaam when
[20:18]you have intermarriage with people of a different culture on the first
[20:21]level what is there that they are able to learn about the
[20:24]religion of islam imam zainul abidin alaihis salam used to teach some
[20:28]of his slaves after karbala the religion of islam they would become
[20:33]scholars and spiritual guides simply because they were studying under imam zainul
[20:39]abdi alaihis salam on the first level therefore imam sadi alaihis salam
[20:43]brings about that intercultural relations on the second level that you make
[20:49]it clear whether somebody is an african slave and whether i am
[20:54]an arab noble man there is no distinction between us in the
[20:59]eyes of allah subhanahu ta'ala except our god consciousness what did the
[21:04]quran stress 49 verse 13 o mankind because this issue is an
[21:24]issue for all of mankind whether it's in the time of imam
[21:27]asada alaihis salaam or in the time when we see george floyd's
[21:31]killing this is an issue for all of mankind we created you
[21:35]male and female from different races and different tribes in order that
[21:41]you get to know one another the best amongst you in the
[21:46]eyes of allah subhanahu ta'ala is the arab no the best amongst
[21:51]you in the eyes of allah subhanahu is the persian no the
[21:56]best amongst eyes subhanahu wa ta'ala is the european no the best
[22:01]amongst the eyes of allah subhanahu ta'ala is the indian the best
[22:04]amongst you you in the eyes of allah is the african no
[22:07]the best amongst you in the eyes of god are those who
[22:10]are conscious of god's presence in their life therefore imam saddai when
[22:16]marrying somebody of african descent people could have easily raised the question
[22:21]that imam firstly why don't you marry a sayyidah imam asadaq is
[22:27]our master he is the one we look up to he is
[22:32]a sayyid from the progeny of rasool allah sallallaho alaihi wa'alehi he
[22:37]could have easily married a sayyid because there are some communities who
[22:41]will stress that if my son is a sayyid he has to
[22:44]marry a sayyid imam saddai alaihis salam could have easily married somebody
[22:50]who you would see one may argue on his level somebody for
[22:54]example when we say on his level not in terms of the
[22:56]knowledge of imam saddai alaihis salam but in terms of what in
[23:00]terms of for example coming from the same area as him from
[23:04]the same background as him he makes it clear that no why
[23:08]as a sayyid do i have to marry a sayyidah if i
[23:11]want to then i can but i'm going to marry who a
[23:15]lady who none of her line goes back to rasool allah sallallaho
[23:19]alaihe wa alehi but she is a lady who has the highest
[23:23]of akhla one of her titles was what muhaddaba when you say
[23:28]someone muhaddaba muhaddaba what does it mean literally their manners are like
[23:32]gold one may argue golden morals they have imam al saddam alaihi
[23:37]salaam did not say if her nesab is from my grandfather say
[23:42]from the granddaughters of imam al hassan i will not know there
[23:47]is a lady she is musafat she is muhaddaba the best of
[23:51]akhlaq pure from all impurities did imam asadaq look at her skin
[23:57]color did imam asadaq turn around and say well you know what
[24:01]she's african she's black she may be of a brown color we
[24:05]don't marry from those colors not at all not one bit nor
[24:10]of imam asadaq not imam al qadam not imam raba not imam
[24:15]al jawad none of the imams after imam asadaq cared one bit
[24:20]that the lady they were marrying was of african descent this was
[24:25]a fundamental lesson early on why because for imam sallallahu alaihi salaam
[24:30]to marry someone from africa when the arabs used to look at
[24:34]themselves as being higher than everybody else until today you'll find that
[24:37]some arabs will see themselves as higher than the african some africans
[24:40]will see themselves as higher than indians some indians may see themselves
[24:44]as higher than other indians if you just look at some of
[24:47]the castes throughout their lives wanted to highlight that all lives matter
[24:54]in the sense that not the sense that it's been taken out
[24:58]of context today when you see today it's been hijacked we don't
[25:02]need it to be hijacked reality is all of us are one
[25:05]family humanity is one family and the quran says don't ever reach
[25:10]a stage where you look down at others because what is the
[25:14]root of racism as well as what these three if you put
[25:21]them together they are the roots of racism self conceit ostentatiousness and
[25:28]arrogance whenever you see a racist you'll see they have those three
[25:33]diseases sayyidina what do you mean diseases self conceit ostentatiousness arrogance how
[25:41]do i take them to a pharmacy there are certain diseases which
[25:46]are physical which they cannot prescribe for eupanadol or paracetamol or anything
[25:52]else these are spiritual diseases if you're affected by riyah or by
[25:57]ujjob or by takambur you're affected by self conceit or you're affected
[26:04]by arrogance or you're affected by pride where you look at others
[26:08]and you say to them i am greater than you i look
[26:12]down at you you're not worthy of being around me those diseases
[26:16]when they come together you have a racist unfortunately racist environment in
[26:22]the world that we live in but when you look at imam
[26:24]saddam what was imam saddam doing he said yes my wife is
[26:28]not from northwest africa she's not from medina nor is she from
[26:32]mecca nor is she from kufa she may not be of the
[26:36]same background as me but at the end of the day if
[26:39]i have someone who is more hathdebah her akhlaq are the highest
[26:43]akhlaq she is more than pure then what else do i want
[26:48]it's an honor for me to be married to somebody of african
[26:53]descent was he the first to marry someone of african descent from
[26:56]ahlul bislat was he the first no he was not the first
[27:01]the first was rasulullah sallallaho alaihi wa'alehi rasulullah sallallaho alaihi wa'alehi when
[27:07]he married mary the coptic was from egypt the holy prophet did
[27:14]not insist i am muhammad sallallaho alaihe wa'alehi and i will only
[27:20]marry from mecca or medina his wife mary al qumtaiyah was from
[27:25]egypt she was not from his area and she was a lady
[27:29]of the highest reputation the highest morals you will not find morality
[27:35]like her morality highly respected amongst the members of al muhammad salaam
[27:42]sallam alaihehim so therefore what do we have we have imam asadaq
[27:45]alaihehis salaam marrying someone asked okay sayyidina if i now want to
[27:50]marry somebody for example who is of an african background or african
[27:55]caribbean background or african american background in our communities there's no way
[28:00]our parents will let us if i bring a sister for example
[28:05]to my mother or to my father and i say that look
[28:08]this is someone who i really want to get married to she
[28:11]may be born in the path of ahlul bates salawatu allah sallamu
[28:14]alaihim or she may be someone who has reverted towards the path
[28:20]of the family of the prophet peace be upon them at that
[28:23]moment i'll come to my mother or my father and they'll straight
[28:25]away say no not at all not only that in our mosques
[28:30]sayyidna you'll see that sometimes there is this racism that exists so
[28:35]what do we do about that are we meant to come forward
[28:39]and pretend that it doesn't happen is it something that's recommended that
[28:44]we do something about there's an important point to be mentioned over
[28:48]here first and foremost what context are we talking about and when
[28:52]it comes to for example the communities in the west there is
[28:56]still an evolution where we are progressing very well alhamdulillah when i
[29:01]look for example in birmingham i see sheikh noor is the resident
[29:05]islam of the birmingham jama'at sheikh noor originally is from ghana and
[29:11]the jamahat in birmingham originally are from east africa but they did
[29:15]not look at his skin color rather they looked at the knowledge
[29:20]and the impeccable character of somebody like sheikh noor and when they
[29:25]saw this they said that that person is a person who should
[29:28]lead this community it may not have happened twenty thirty years ago
[29:32]maybe maybe for different reasons but we're evolving we're growing we're trying
[29:38]to understand each other we're we're trying to understand each other's cultures
[29:42]yes someone from tanzania and someone from ghana they may come from
[29:46]different cultures but at the end of the day our children have
[29:51]come to live together and learn from one another and alhamdulillah that
[29:55]some of the diseases that may affect certain people do not affect
[30:00]us when we make a decision for example to have sheikh noor
[30:03]as the resident alim where in birmingham or for example sheikh ayub
[30:08]sheikh ayub again originally from east africa but of the black community
[30:15]of east africa in east africa you may have people who originally
[30:20]are from the black african community and you may have people who
[30:25]are of the khwaja community who have gone to east africa so
[30:29]they may all live for example in dar es salaam they may
[30:32]live in arusha they may live in mombasa they may live for
[30:36]example in zanzibar people who have lived with one another they have
[30:40]lived with one another and someone says but sayyidna there may not
[30:43]be intermarriage they're not being intermarriage doesn't necessarily mean that there is
[30:49]a disease in the hearts of the community what it means is
[30:52]that slowly we have to try and develop ways in which we
[30:55]can bring our cultures together the way the quran tells us when
[30:59]the quran says that allah made you different races and tribes so
[31:08]that you get to know one another that should be our aim
[31:11]sheikh hayyub at the moment is the resident alim of a community
[31:15]in east london i guarantee you that the majority of that community
[31:19]do not come from an african black background rather they come from
[31:23]a background for example from the indoor pack subcontinent but when we
[31:27]see sheikh ayub leading the community alhamdulillah in the west if i
[31:31]see sheikh ayub here and i see for example sheikh noor and
[31:36]i see others they will admit to you that maybe twenty twenty
[31:39]five years ago that same interaction and that same development was not
[31:43]there i remember a time no doubt where sometimes those invites didn't
[31:48]come for some of the speakers but alhamdulillah fifteen twenty years later
[31:52]there has been a development even with myself i may be of
[31:56]an iraqi background but i have been given a privilege of leading
[32:00]a community that may be for example of a background from east
[32:03]africa and you'll find other speakers in the world not just here
[32:07]in the united states which highlight to us our racism that may
[32:11]exist cannot be compared to the racism that you normally associate with
[32:17]the ku klux klan for example klux klan and others were looking
[32:22]at someone black as if they should be burnt if not burning
[32:26]them they cannot have an education they cannot sit with me on
[32:29]the bus alhamdulillah our racism that may exist in our communities does
[32:35]not reach that level and if it does then every community has
[32:39]people who may have a disease in their heart it's not just
[32:41]us and other religions as well there are people who may have
[32:45]diseases in their hearts who may look down at others because of
[32:48]their skin color therefore someone says sayyidna so now if i want
[32:52]to marry a sister from who's from an african american background or
[32:57]a sister for example who comes from where who comes from an
[33:01]african caribbean background let's say from the west indies or someone who
[33:05]comes originally from africa let's say from nigeria my parents may say
[33:10]no your parents saying no doesn't mean they're racist your parents saying
[33:15]no maybe because they prefer that you marry someone from the same
[33:18]culture as you because there's no doubt when you understand each other's
[33:22]culture that takes a weight off one's shoulders when it comes to
[33:27]marriage yes there is no doubt that islam does have no problem
[33:32]with whatsoever with someone marrying from a different culture islam has no
[33:37]issue whatsoever with this at the end of the day you marry
[33:40]somebody who has the best akhlaq the best morals and somebody who
[33:46]is following the path of muhammad and al muhammad peace be upon
[33:50]them when i marry that person that should be the most important
[33:54]thing for me not somebody's skin color and if my parents for
[33:58]example are not accepting they may come around to accepting the onus
[34:03]is on the speakers scholars those who lead the community to highlight
[34:08]to us that we should try and find it within our hearts
[34:13]to open up to those of different cultural backgrounds in the shia
[34:17]world at the moment you have people who are shia who are
[34:20]living in malaysia shia living in indonesia shia living in mexico shia
[34:24]living in ghana shia living in nigeria shia living in iraq shia
[34:28]living in iran in lebanon and syria it is not like how
[34:32]it used to be where the demographic was concentrated for example in
[34:36]the middle east and the indo pak subcontinent now it's gone to
[34:39]south america north america it's gone towards australasia when it's gone towards
[34:44]eastern europe scandinavia in this way when it's gone to those areas
[34:49]there's going to be intermarriage ahlul bayt salaam wa ralayhi they always
[34:53]tried as much as they could to try and ensure that this
[34:59]racism if it did exist there was guidance given there were challenges
[35:04]which the holy prophet peace be upon his family faced when jawaiber
[35:07]would come and say to him you rasool allah nobody gives me
[35:11]a chance to get married because of my black color and he
[35:13]told him to go towards labid you found for example when people
[35:17]would make fun of bilal when he used to recite adan and
[35:20]the holy prophet would keep encouraging so that that disease that may
[35:24]affect a good person but that disease can affect anyone at that
[35:29]moment the holy prophet peace be upon his side will say bilal
[35:31]don't worry you keep going even if you say allah allah will
[35:37]count it as ash hadu allah the holy prophet peace be upon
[35:41]his family would even say that aman the lady who raised him
[35:45]who was of black descent he would make it clear that this
[35:48]lady is my mother after my own mother he would highlight that
[35:53]if it wasn't for najashi in abyssinia islam would not have been
[35:57]able to spread to african shores all this time the holy prophet
[36:01]peace be upon him and his family had tried to highlight to
[36:04]all of us something very clear and that was that racism can
[36:08]always permeate one's skin and flesh can always affect our societies our
[36:15]communities but that we have to try and make a concerted effort
[36:19]to ensure that that disease does not spread within our communities let
[36:24]me make something clear as well when we say black lives matter
[36:28]no doubt the black community has seen years upon years of torture
[36:35]abuses of racism wherever they have gone but equally you can be
[36:41]a racist even if you are someone who is of a black
[36:44]background you could be racist towards someone who is of a brown
[36:47]background it can happen racism isn't a disease for a specific group
[36:52]of people it's a disease that can affect all human beings there
[36:56]are racists who are white who look down at others who are
[36:59]white there are certain people who are racist who are arabs who
[37:03]look down at others who are arabs so sometimes people of your
[37:07]same skin color look down at you sometimes people have a different
[37:10]skin color black looking down at brown white looking down at black
[37:14]people of different the point is that that's racism when it exists
[37:19]it's our role to try as much as we can to remind
[37:22]ourselves of the teachings of ahlul bayt on this issue and the
[37:26]quran when the quran says o you who believe oh you who
[37:37]believe don't let one group of you one nation of you make
[37:41]fun of another nation because there's a possibility the ones you're making
[37:45]fun of are better than you you can try being someone white
[37:50]who makes fun of the black community produce the lines of muhammad
[37:55]ali make fun as much as you want wallah you have not
[37:59]0% nothing compared to the charisma of muhammad ali nor do you
[38:06]have the passion of malcolm x nor do you have the eloquence
[38:10]of baldwin or the perseverance of parks when you therefore make fun
[38:16]of another group of people i could be a racist i could
[38:19]be arab and i have racist tendencies towards someone who's persian i
[38:23]could be persian and look down at someone who's arab i could
[38:27]be indian and look down my own people don't make fun of
[38:31]others when it could be that they are people who are better
[38:34]than you don't let one nation make fun of another nation for
[38:44]that nation that you're making fun of may be better than you
[38:49]therefore when you came to this area of the marriage of the
[38:51]imam imam marries hamid al barbariya sometimes she is known as hamid
[38:56]al and dalusia he marries hamid al barbariya when he marries her
[39:00]alhamdulillah allah blesses them imam abu basir narrates we were sitting with
[39:06]imam asada one day he had made lunch for us and what
[39:11]a lunch imam saddiq had made for us he says when imam
[39:15]saddiq alaihis salam had made that lunch we were all looking at
[39:19]the beauty and the generosity of the imam we were in abwa
[39:23]abwa is somewhere between mecca and medina possibly near juhfa he says
[39:29]we were in that area sitting down all of a sudden someone
[39:33]came he said master master your wife hamida she is calling you
[39:39]the pangs of pregnancy have come upon her imam saddai alaihis salam
[39:44]got up at that moment he went towards the house until he
[39:48]came back with a smile that was the widest smile abu bakr
[39:52]said may allah always keep you smiling in this way what is
[39:55]the news he said allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has given me a
[39:59]blessing of the person who will be the greatest creation of allah
[40:04]on the earth in his time i have named him musa imam
[40:08]musa al qadam sallallahu alaihi wa sallamu alaihi he said i have
[40:12]named him what i have named him musa his mother said to
[40:16]me when he was born he faced his head towards the heavens
[40:20]and i said to her that is a sign that he is
[40:23]a chosen representative of rasulullah sallallaho alaihi wa'alehi because the holy prophet
[40:30]peace be upon his family would say that all of us when
[40:32]we are born raise our heads towards the heavens as a blessing
[40:37]from allah subhanahu wa ta'ala therefore you found that this hamid al
[40:41]barbaria gives birth to imam al qadam that means that imam al
[40:44]qadam alaihi salaam is more than 50% black does anyone have an
[40:48]issue and imam al qadum alaihi salaam's wife her name was najma
[40:55]she was from where northwest africa that means that imam rada may
[40:59]be more than 60% black does anyone have an issue do black
[41:04]lives matter they certainly do with our imams otherwise we have a
[41:08]problem then imam rada alaihis salam his wife black imam al jawad
[41:14]forget 5060 imam al jawad you could go towards 80% if we're
[41:19]heading in that direction then the twelfth of al muhammad then there's
[41:25]a possibility that he will be someone whose life no doubts matter
[41:31]because when we look at him and we see that black lives
[41:34]matter what if our imam if we're going through this area imam
[41:38]asadaq's wife from northwest africa imam al qadam northwest imam jawad imam
[41:44]rada for example imam alhad all them you'll find that their wives
[41:48]from northwest africa that means when we come to the imam of
[41:52]our time will anyone have that problem if you have that problem
[41:56]then work on it because allah subhanahu wa ta'ala wants us to
[41:59]purify ourselves from these diseases she was a wife she was a
[42:05]mother but she was also a jurist as well yes imagine that
[42:10]this lady take all this skin color discussion away you have a
[42:15]human being in front of you a human being who aspires to
[42:19]grow in this world to build a family to be educated and
[42:22]a human being who had reached the highest level of realm she
[42:27]was a jurist in her own right which no doubt raises the
[42:31]question whether females could become one day marajah because we know that
[42:36]a female in the school of ahlul bayt could be a mujtahida
[42:40]we have a mujtahid and we have the mujtahida a female could
[42:44]become a mujtahidah like we have for example mujtahids in the world
[42:48]today you could have a female mujtahidah we have a few female
[42:52]mujtahidahs in the last hundred years who have reached the level of
[42:56]a mujtahid a mujta head someone says but can she become the
[43:00]marajah of the school the marajah the one who everyone returns back
[43:04]to you find that there is a debate and interesting if you
[43:08]see the work of the discussion of marhom shamsuddin on ayatollah al
[43:13]khawi's discussion of whether a female could become the grand jurist of
[43:20]the school of ahlul bayt salaam wa salaam wa salaam wa find
[43:24]with them that ahlul bayt alaihi wa salaam salaam what do we
[43:27]see ahlul bayt alaihi wa salaam we see very clearly with them
[43:30]that they were turning around and saying that this lady if you
[43:35]want a question answered you go towards her and she will answer
[43:39]your question because you found that abdul rahman the son of hajjaj
[43:45]says i came to imam asada one day why would you go
[43:48]to imam asada because you got a question and you want that
[43:51]question answered don't you so he goes i went to imam asadh
[43:55]alaihis salam and when i went to the imam i had a
[43:59]question to ask him about our child imam said tell your wife
[44:05]the mother of the child to go and ask my wife hamida
[44:11]do you know how huge that is because when imam saddai alaihi
[44:15]salam says let your wife ask my wife and my wife will
[44:21]give her the exact answer what's he saying here's an ijazah my
[44:26]wife much that much that in which sense will come to ijtihad
[44:30]shortly in the forthcoming nights but rather she is someone who was
[44:35]deep in her knowledge of the sciences you asked her a question
[44:40]about the quran she could answer you question about the quran you
[44:43]asked her a question about history she can ask your question answer
[44:47]your questions on history you asked her a question about which area
[44:51]you ask her a question for example about hajj say i have
[44:56]hajj and i want to take my son or my daughter with
[44:59]me to hajj if you went to hamidah the wife of imam
[45:03]asada alaihis salam and you came to her and you said to
[45:06]her hamidah i would like to ask you a question and we
[45:10]need this in our communities sometimes i may answer questions for example
[45:14]of the males in our communities sometimes there are sensitive questions that
[45:17]our sisters want to ask they can't ask me so if there
[45:21]is someone who is a female jurist for example or someone who's
[45:24]learned and studied then she can answer that question so they would
[45:30]come towards her and they would say to her that we have
[45:33]a question in al kafi of sheikh al kulaini and in bihar
[45:38]al anwar of allama al majlisi you'll find that we have narrations
[45:42]where she answers or gives knowledge to the people in one area
[45:47]when she is asked about hajj if you want to take for
[45:49]example ask questions about your children and their relation with hajj she
[45:54]answers the question and then in which area in the area for
[45:58]example of narrating what happened to imam asada alaihis salam in his
[46:03]final moments she is the narrator so we have from her as
[46:08]well that when imam asad alaihis salam says allah what a line
[46:19]this is about the wife of the imam this lady of african
[46:23]descent she is praised in this world and treasured in the hereafter
[46:38]she is praised in this world and she is treasured in the
[46:43]hereafter imagine in this world she is praised she is known as
[46:46]one who is muhaddaba she is known as all of these titles
[46:55]are reserved for her but also what also treasured in the hereafter
[47:00]meaning that in the hereafter she will have the highest of positions
[47:05]a position that is not just reserved for the arab not just
[47:09]reserved for the persian but also reserved for all people of different
[47:14]races and different tribes who held on to the message of muhammadan
[47:19]al muhammad because no doubt you'll find that with this lady she
[47:25]made sure that when it came to her son imam musa najafar
[47:29]she is the one who found the wife for him she found
[47:32]the wife by the name of najma or some say she had
[47:37]found the wife for him and she had known that that lady
[47:43]was the purest of ladies to the extent that when she had
[47:46]married imam al qa'vam she had her name changed to tahira the
[47:52]purest of ladies that were there so in other words she could
[47:55]have easily turned around and said that no we'll go back to
[47:58]marrying a lady from where from arabia no who is the best
[48:02]who is able to be in the household of the prophet if
[48:04]they are from africa then so be it and if they are
[48:07]from arabia then so be it because all of us are creations
[48:10]of the lord and all of us have to be one family
[48:14]that shows respect to one another and that was the way of
[48:17]al muhammad no doubt if you look at their lives they didn't
[48:22]mind where their companions were from their companions could be from turkey
[48:27]as long as he was on the path of the prophet peace
[48:30]be upon him and his family that's all that mattered their companions
[48:35]could be from where from rome as long as they were on
[48:39]the path of the prophet peace be upon his family that's all
[48:41]that mattered a companion could be from kufa a companion could be
[48:45]from medina a companion could be from basra a companion could be
[48:49]from parts of iran it does not matter as long as they
[48:54]were on the path of ahlul batesallahu alaihi wasallamu alaihihim that was
[48:58]the main point that was the main condition and that's why when
[49:03]you look at the tenth of muharram imam al hussain alaihi salaam
[49:07]with the companions that surrounded him you find that those companions where
[49:12]did they come from they came from all different backgrounds there were
[49:16]companions who had come from kufa as was expected there were some
[49:21]who had come from medina some who had come from mecca they
[49:26]had all come from different backgrounds why to come and stand to
[49:30]support abba abdullah in his final moments and imam al hussain looked
[49:35]at each one of them he knew that each one of them
[49:37]was the purest not once did imam look at any of them
[49:41]and talk about their skin color or their tribal background on the
[49:45]contrary is that that look you could be alongside me and if
[49:48]you want you can leave i know your intention i know you've
[49:52]come pure over here but if you want you can leave and
[49:56]you'll find them one by one turning around to the imam one
[50:00]of them would say to the imam that even if my body
[50:03]was cut into a thousand pieces and i was resurrected a thousand
[50:07]times each time it would be an honor for me to stand
[50:11]in front of you another who would say that it will be
[50:14]my honor to stand in front of your grandfather rasoolallah sallallaho alaihi
[50:18]wa'alehi and say that i defended your grandson they came from different
[50:23]backgrounds their goal was one the service of the lord and the
[50:27]service of muhammad and al muhammad and of them you had john
[50:31]the son of haway this man who had been in the house
[50:35]of the family of the prophet for many years a man of
[50:38]abyssinian background do black lives matter they sure did on the tenth
[50:43]of muharram imam looks towards john as john wants to go out
[50:48]on the battlefield the imam says to him that john you've served
[50:52]our household enough abu dar al ghafari he served him imam amir
[50:57]al mumineen he served him imam al hasan what taufiq this man
[51:02]was given that he was able to serve the family and the
[51:05]companions of rasulullah sallallaho alaihi wa'alehi imam al hussain said to him
[51:11]that john you don't need to go out you can go back
[51:15]he said to him no allow me to go out i beg
[51:18]of you he said to him but john you've served us enough
[51:22]he said no let me go out i want to make your
[51:26]mother fatima tezara proud of me on this day what will i
[51:33]answer her on the day of judgment if i said that i
[51:38]left the grandson of rasulullah with no one to help him imam
[51:44]al hussain embraced him at that moment would you reply to that
[51:48]because it's a soft spot for imam al hussein when you mention
[51:51]his mother fatima it breaks his heart so at that moment imam
[51:55]al hussein said to him very well john no doubt deep down
[52:00]with imam al hussein he felt sorry that he was not able
[52:03]to cater or to serve john himself with at least a drop
[52:07]of water at that moment but john came out in the battlefield
[52:12]when he came out he made it clear that some of you
[52:15]in the opposition have your racial tendencies tendencies from the days of
[52:19]jahiliyyah some of you are arrogant towards people like me because of
[52:24]my skin color but he came out and he stood in front
[52:28]of all of them and he said he came out he fought
[52:51]valiantly on that day he tried to attack the whole of the
[52:55]opposition from his sword 25 of the opposition fell on the ground
[53:02]until eventually one of them came and attacked him when he fell
[53:06]on the ground he called out it didn't matter what color your
[53:14]skin was when you said that line imam al hussain hurried towards
[53:20]the body of john he sat by the body of john then
[53:25]he placed his cheek on the cheek of john this one moment
[53:31]is a stand against every racist movement my skin my skin may
[53:39]be the skin of an arab man from medina and your skin
[53:45]your skin may be the skin of a man from abyssinia but
[53:52]in my eyes i am not higher than you in any way
[53:57]what did john reply who is like me and my cheek is
[54:05]touched by the cheek of the son of rasulullah he buried him
[54:10]in the ground he took him back that day actually he carried
[54:14]him back and then he went around and he carried each of
[54:18]his companions he went when habib fell he carried him back when
[54:23]muslim fell imam al hussain carried him back when hurrah fell imam
[54:28]al hussain carried him back one by one the imam carried each
[54:35]of the companions back towards the tent i ask you who carried
[54:41]the body of imam al hussein when he lay on the ground
[54:46]on the plains of karabella i'm gonna leave you all with this
[54:50]one line george floyd was killed the knee was on his neck
[54:55]he called out i can't breathe i can't breathe human beings around
[55:00]the world broke down why because when we imagine it we think
[55:05]that this person had a knee on his neck and for minutes
[55:09]four minutes after minutes after minutes minutes eight minutes he's calling out
[55:14]i can't breathe i can't breathe how about when for over an
[55:21]hour you call out i am thirsty i am thirsty is there
[55:26]anyone to quench my thirst george floyd had one knee on his
