More Tender-hearted than a Mother
Mothers’ hearts break very fast. They are manifestations of God. They are even harder than God. No one is as tender-hearted as God. “There is nothing like Him” (Qur’an 42:11) He is so tender-hearted.
For example, you have done something 99% because of God and 1% because of your neighbour. God says, “I don’t want it. It’s useless. I won’t accept it.” “But God I put myself through so much trouble, and 99% it was for You! See my heart!” He replies, “No, it hasn’t been done purely for Me. I don’t want it.” “God! You have become like my mom!”
I bought this cake and thought that I’ll either take it for Mom or my friend. “My friend wasn’t around; I brought it for you.” Mom gets upset. She says, “See how he has bought me a cake!” “But Mom, I have bought it for you.” “No, you said yourself that you were thinking of your friend too. If it was for me, maybe you would have bought a different cake.” “Mom! Take it easy!” Moms are very tender-hearted.
Moms are like God. God is very tender-hearted too. If you feel even a little bad, God says, “My angels! Is he saying there is no God?” “We swear to You that he believes in You, God! Why are you so tender-hearted? He just prayed.” “No! See. He’s feeling bad. Don’t I exist? Don’t I support him?!”
It had been a few days that nothing was revealed. The Holy Prophet (s) was very dependent on God and His Grace. The Prophet (s) had become tender-hearted too! The Prophet of God (s) became sad thinking, “What has happened?” God became upset, “My Prophet! Are you sad?! Haven’t I held your hand up until now?! ‘Did He not find you an orphan and give you shelter?’ (Qur’an 93:6) Didn’t I take your hand when you were an orphan? Now you think that I have left you?! You didn’t have anyone or any guide. I guided you. ‘Did He not find you poor and suffice you?’ (Qur’an 93:8) You didn’t have anything and I took your hands.” I think the Prophet (s) suddenly said, “God, I am happy. I’m feeling very well. Don’t complain about me anymore. I won’t feel bad anymore!” Peace was established.
If God wants to talk to us, He has many things to say. I think God has lots of complaints about us. What does God tell you? The words and concepts that He tells you are more important than what He told His Prophet (s). God told the Prophet (s), “Didn’t I send revelation to you?” This is very good.
But, do you know what God tells us? He says something that is somehow even more valuable. What is that? God says, “Didn’t I give you Husayn (‘a)? Don’t you see him? Didn’t I give you safety by way of Husayn (‘a)? Didn’t I give you blessings by way of Husayn (‘a)? Didn’t I give you love by way of Husayn (‘a), so that you may experience love? Millions of poems are composed for him, but you don’t get tired. Will I leave you alone?! So, why are you feeling bad?” You should thank God very much because of His Husayn (‘a).
God is very tender-hearted! If you feel even a little bad, God says, “My angels! Is he saying there is no God?” “We swear to You that he believes in You, God! Why are you so tender-hearted? He just prayed.” “No! See. He’s feeling bad. Don’t I exist? Don’t I support him?!”

“God is with the brokenhearted.” That's true. It is said in the traditions, “God is with the brokenhearted.” Don’t be mistaken. This does not mean that God dislikes a happy heart. What if I say that God loves a happy heart more? Will you accept this from me? If a person is happy due to being satisfied with God, his prayers will be accepted more. [One might say,] “But it’s said that the prayers of a person who is brokenhearted are answered.” Yes, that is true. But you see… What can I say?
Imam Hasan Mujtaba (as) has talked about when you are completely satisfied with God in your heart! Look deep inside your heart. Are you satisfied? Try to do it right now, my friends. Everyone try to make his or her heart pleased with God right now. Imam Hasan (as) talked about when you are deeply pleased with God. As a result of this, a person becomes happy. Right now, smile due to your satisfaction with God. Your current state is the state when prayers are answered. Imam Hasan Mujtaba (as) said that whatever you pray for in this situation, he guarantees it will be answered.
[God says,] “Come to Me when you’re brokenhearted. I will fix the broken heart. Come to Me when you’re sad. I will remove your sadness.” Don’t be mistaken! God doesn’t mean to go to Him when you are upset at Him! You should be happy with God! Yes, God loves someone who is brokenhearted. Yes, a broken heart has no refuge but God! If God rejects such a person, where can he go? Obviously, God loves the brokenhearted. But this does not mean that you should try to break your heart in this sense! If your happiness is due to your satisfaction with God, your prayers will be answered better.
Let me give an example. If a child has been beaten, will his mother hug and fondle him? So we should beat the child and give him to his mother! [You will tell me,] “No! What are you saying?! A mother prefers you to give a flower to her child.” God, the Almighty, bestows favors on His servants when they are happy. On a wedding night, prayers are answered [according to the traditions]. When it’s raining, your heart is happy and your prayers are answered. Why? Because you are feeling good.
If a person is happy due to being satisfied with God, his prayers will be accepted more. [One might say,] “But it’s said that the prayers of a person who is brokenhearted are answered.” But this does not mean that you should try to break your heart in this sense! If your happiness is due to your satisfaction with God, your prayers will be answered better.

There is a beautiful tradition narrated from a man named Nauf. He said, “I saw Imam Ali (as) turn away from everyone and move away quickly and eagerly.” Have you seen when someone is pursuing something he likes how he moves away from others? He doesn’t say goodbye ten times. He‘s like an arrow that has been shot from a bow! This is a description of how the Imam went away.
The man asked him, “Where are you going?” It was midnight when he saw the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (as), leaving! Now see how the Imam said he wanted to go pray the Midnight Prayer and worship. [The Imam said,] “Nauf, leave me. Indeed my longings take me to the presence of my beloved.”
O Imam, may I be sacrificed for you. Worshiping to you is going toward your longings, right? May I be sacrificed for you. It’s obvious that this worshiping is fun and enjoyable for you.
“I said, ‘My master, what are your longings?’ The Imam said, ‘The One Who should know, the One Whom I long for knows this Himself. I don’t need to tell this to anyone else.’”
See how the Commander of the Faithful talked. This is how he was. Nauf said, “O Commander of the Faithful, I’m afraid of my greed...”He saw Imam Ali’s (as) position. He looked at himself and said he’s afraid! Nauf was a good person. He saw Imam Ali’s (as) longings and what was fun to him. So Nauf said he was afraid of his own greed for this world. He saw that he didn’t have that same enthusiasm the Imam had for worshiping. He asked what he should do. The Imam (as) was surprised.
The Imam said, “Why don’t you take refuge with He Who protects those who are afraid and is the shelter of the mystics?” Why don’t you get help from God? He gives refuge. If you’re truly afraid, He gives refuge to those who are afraid. Get help from God Himself! He is the shelter of the mystics. You understood you’re not in a good situation? You understood there is a better situation? He is the shelter of the mystics. He gives refuge Himself. Why do you ask the Imam?
What a truly high-level conversation. It is very beautiful and mystical. Nauf said, “Guide me to Him.” I don’t know how to read the words of the Commander of the Faithful (as). The Imam said, “He is the Exalted and Great God. Attach your longings to His good grace.” This is how worshiping becomes something fun and enjoyable! See the Commander of the Faithful’s (as) outlook. The Exalted and Great God will take you to your longings. Don’t you want to be like this?! So ask Him. God will take you to your longings. [The Imam said,] “Don’t you want to worship God like me?!” The Imam didn’t say, “like me.” I’m saying it like this. Don’t you want to worship God like the Imam? God will take you to your longings.
What is worshiping my dear ones? Worshiping means you talk about your longings with God and He takes you to them. O God, so worshiping is fun and enjoyable.
1- Feel the resemblance between the “Night of Destiny” and the “Resurrection Day.”
2- Be optimistic and pray for forgiveness, our wishes, and particularly for getting close to Him.
3- Be restless to achieve closeness to God.
4- The faithful should resemble the sinful in showing empty hands to God. The sinful must pray like the faithful with hearts filled with certainty as to God’s Kindness and Generosity.
5- Attract God's Compassion by being kind to others (by forgiving and praying for them).
6- Be generous by praying for others.
7- Help those in need, and be kind to relatives.
8- Show kindness to our parents, pray for our spiritual leaders.
9- Ask for a good livelihood and the destruction of those who bring about poverty.
10- Join the prayer gatherings with other people, at least for a part of the night.
11- Recite supplications, which are appropriate with our mood.
12- Read some of the Qur'an.
13- Reflect and evaluate ourselves.
14- Think about the moment when we leave this life and review our will.
15- Don’t neglect remembering and thinking about Imam Ali (‘a).
16- Continually feel the presence of the living Imam, al-Mahdi (‘aj).
17- Plan for our future and changes to be made in our behaviour.
18- The third “Night of Destiny” is the night to pray for the coming of Imam Mahdi (‘aj).
19- Pray for a good destiny and martyrdom in the way of God (if one wants).
20- Make a pilgrimage to Imam Husayn’s (‘a) shrine, or send your greetings to him from far. Pray for the martyrs.
I ask for your prayers,
Alireza Panahian
