This message is for you!

Friends, I want to speak simply with you. How long do we live? An average of 70 years. The most is 100 years. Don’t mess up the deal for only 30 years! How do you feel about 100 years? Everyone sees how short life is. But, from which angle should we look at the shortness of life?
A person’s entire honor is based on being able to look at life in this way and saying 100 years is very short. Suddenly you will open your eyes. A tradition says, “People are asleep. When they die they wake up.” 100 years was very short.
Especially you know what happens when we die. Gnostics have said that when we are dying the movie of our whole life passes by in our minds with all its details. Suddenly that is when you realize what you have lost. What moments you have ruined. What you have gained. Regret for what you have lost is the pain of dying. You know that dying doesn’t have a physiological pain. If the pain is more than a certain amount, the soul will separate. Unconsciousness. Complete cessation.
A tradition states the archangel Azrael came to take the life of Hazrat Noah (‘a). Hazrat Noah (‘a) was lying down in his house. He had a very small house and his feet stuck out of his house. Azrael said hello, and Noah (‘a) recognized him and responded. Azrael said, “Noah, I have come to take your life.” Noah (‘a) asked, “Do I have to get up?” Azrael said, “No, be comfortable. Just lie down.”
Azrael said, “Noah, you should have made a house for yourself that when you lie down your feet don’t stick out from it.” Noah (‘a) said, “This 1000 years of life is so short that a person shouldn’t be after these things.” Azrael said that in the future people will live who build towers for themselves. Their houses will be from reinforced concrete, with girders and cement. The buildings will be many times taller than they are. They will have many rooms and levels. He didn’t say it in this way, but he talked about their strength and greatness. Noah (‘a) asked, “How many years do they live?” He said, “An average of 70 years.” Noah (‘a) asked, “They make these things for 70 years?!”
When God takes a person from this world, he will complain and say, “You didn’t inform me beforehand.” God will say, “I informed you three times.” He asks, “When did you inform me?” “You weren’t paying attention! You were looking here and there. One time a person you knew passed away. One time that incident.” God notifies everyone three times before his/her death. How does he notify? I don’t know. You know it yourself.
Look carefully. If you look from a certain angle, you will understand that this message is for you. In another tradition, it has been said that Noah (‘a) was asked, “What is your opinion about the length of your life?” He replied, “It was a room which had two doors. I entered this door and went out from that door. I didn’t sit down at all. I passed through a room.”

Small Pharaohs

On the Day of Judgment, the curtains move away. “On the day when all secrets will be made public.” [Qur’an 86:9] It will become clear if a person was a small tradesman, a homemaker or a regular person. But, they take this person with Pharaoh to the same place. “God, why do You take this person with Pharaoh? He/she hasn’t done anything.” God replies, “He/she acted like Pharaoh and rebelled in his/her own situation.”
“Why do You take this person with Saddam? He hasn’t even killed an ant.” “But, if he could have, he would have done it, and this is his file. He only had authority over one person, and we told him, ‘She is your wife and you are her husband.’ He oppressed his wife like a Pharaoh. If he had authority over a few people, he would have massacred all of them.” “Why are You resurrecting this woman with Saddam and Pharaoh?” “She forced her husband and humiliated him. He was so afraid of her. She didn’t have authority over him, but she kept him under her feet.” This person is rebellious! “Indeed man becomes rebellious when he considers himself without need!” [Qur’an 96:6-7]
Some women are homemakers. But, they are merciless with their tongue. They attack and set things on fire. She screams at her child saying, “Get lost! I said …” She demolishes. “This is not your child. He/she is God’s servant. After you have struck, bothered or scared him/her, how do you want to answer about this to God?” Being rebellious is very bad. God gives some people a small opportunity and says, “Don’t rebel. Let’s see what you do.” If they don’t rebel, God will give them another and another opportunity. Then, He resurrects such people with the prophets and their descendants.
God is asked, “He was an ordinary person. He had a teahouse. He poured tea.” God replies, “He wasn’t dishonest when pouring tea. He would make tea for the customer in the same way that he made it for himself.” The human being is a rebellious creature. How does he/she show his/her rebellion? Either they get upset internally, or they bother the people around them. Or, in politics they rebel and want to dominate a society. This is one of a human being’s states, which God has mentioned firmly in the Qur’an! This is certain. The human being is a rebellious creature.

God gives some people a small opportunity. If they don’t rebel, God will give them another and another opportunity. Then, He resurrects such a person with the prophets and their descendants.

The Differences between People

Imam Sadiq (‘a) said, “If you realize the differences between people, you won’t blame anyone.”
Our preaching is usually mixed with blaming. Let’s not preach in such a way that anyone will be blamed and become disappointed. A sinful person should always be kept hopeful. We shouldn’t say, “You’re wretched, but there is hope that God will make you prosper!” It is possible that one may not be wretched although he or she sins.
Imam Sadiq (‘a) counted up to several hundred types of differences between people. If we understand these differences, we won’t blame anyone. One might say, “If we don’t blame people, how can we guide them?!”
People said, “O Prophet of God, that young person who prays behind you ogles women too.” The Prophet replied, “His prayer will fix him.” The Prophet didn’t deny his deed being bad. If that young person heard this, he would become very hopeful. It is very, very interesting. This was really, really interesting.
A person was sitting next to some women and chatting with them. He himself narrated the story like this, “I saw some women sitting close to a tent. I put on some good clothes to go and chat with them. I came and sat next to them to misuse this opportunity!” The Prophet of God (s) was passing by. He asked, “Do you need something there?” He wanted the man to say yes. The man replied, “Yes! I’ve lost my camel’s rope. I am searching for it.” The Prophet (s) said, “Come to me when you have found it.”
The man narrated, “I escaped from among them. Later the Prophet (s) saw me and asked, ‘Did you find your camel’s rope?’ I said, ‘I searched for it, but it wasn’t there.’ I didn’t go near the Prophet anymore so that he wouldn’t ask me why my camel’s rope was there! One time I went into the Mosque to pray and the Prophet (s) wasn’t there. Then, he came. Oh no! The rope and I! I lengthened my prayer. I lengthened it for the Prophet (s) to go and to leave me alone. He had asked me several times, ‘What happened to your camel’s rope?’
The Prophet of God (s) stood there and said, ‘No matter how long your prayer takes, I’m waiting here!’ I finished praying. The Prophet (s) said, ‘What happened to your camel’s rope?’ I replied, ‘There wasn’t any rope. Forgive me. I was wrong and I understood this myself.’ The Prophet said, ‘Don’t sit among the women like that and adhere to the boundaries.’”
This is really wonderful. Now transform this into a way of talking. A tradition says, “A person is hidden behind his tongue.” When you talk, people should say, “He is a kind person.” This is very exact! How should a person talk for people to say that he is kind? Or, how does he talk, saying the same thing, and people say that he is arrogant?
Our preaching is usually mixed with blaming. Let’s not preach in such a way that anyone will be blamed and become disappointed.
