The Code of Friendship

When you love God and God loves you, the first effect on you is that you will become kind with others. What is the effect? You will like your friends and other people. They will like you very much. Your behavior will be based on comradeship very much. We should die for each other. If we don’t die for each other, at least we should like each other, miss each other, and cry when being apart.
God will say on the Day of Judgment, “Why didn’t you come to visit Me when I was sick?” You will say, “God, what do You mean You became sick?! But, You’re the God of the universe.” He will say, “Why didn’t you go to visit your sick friend who was a believer?”
All of you should love each other. But, it is not customary at all for us to be kind to each other. You know that you shouldn’t tell good things about a person to himself. But, Imam Sadiq (‘a) said, “Whomsoever you like, tell him.” Our behavior is not the correct behavior of a true believer. We act very arrogantly.
“Salam!” Only Salam?! You should say, “May I be sacrificed for you!” Only Salam?! You should say Salam to everybody. Wasn’t he in the mourning ceremony with you? So, you should say, “May I be sacrificed for you, my dear!”
Kindness. Kindness. Kindness.
“I miss you. You have to come so that I can see you. Where are you? I want to see you. I just wanted to talk to you to hear your voice.” It has been greatly recommended to give food! A believer gives food. Let’s behave with kindness. The way we are now behaving is not the correct way.
They do a test in elementary school where they bring two drops of water close together. What does intermolecular attraction do when these two drops get close to each other? Water is like this. As soon as they touch each other, they hug each other and become one.
The Martyr Chamran never shook hands with anyone. Instead of shaking hands, he hugged people. Something has been deleted from us!
When the Holy Prophet of Islam (s) shook hands with someone, he wouldn’t let the other person’s hand go, until the other person wanted to take back his hand. Then, he would let go. We are nothing.
May God make us all love each other. Kindness. Kindness. Kindness.
One of the outstanding features of the soldiers was that they loved each other. They didn’t do anything special! But, they suffered when their friends were martyred. When they say, “The front had a special spiritual environment,” what could be seen was this love. The rest was in their hearts and in the wills they wrote. It was in their midnight talks with God, which they tried to hide.
What is the result of, “A nation whom He loves and they love Him”? (Qur’an, 5:54) They will love each other.
It has been highly recommended for the believers to visit each other. When you shake hands, sins will slide away. So, hold hands a little longer.
“If it is like this, then everyone is pure?!” Yes! You thought God will erase the sins of a lover of the Household of the Prophet only on the Day of Judgment? There is intercession each moment.
Support each other. Be kind to each other. Love each other. I won’t say the end of it. If you move forward in this, your love for the Household of the Prophet will increase greatly! The true believers cause the world to love them with these things.

What happens that a person easily and energetically watches over his piety? Tell me dear friends. He is a jewel, has understood this and doesn’t want to lose this jewel. This is the result of seeing his own goodness. A part of self-awareness is seeing your value. You are valuable.
Half of self-awareness is seeing one's own goodness. If for example, one knows that there is a precious jewel worth billions in his bag, he will hold his bag tightly. If one passes by him, he will hold his bag tightly like this. But if there is nothing in it, he will carry it comfortably like this. You’ll become vigilant. Piety means being vigilant.
Who becomes pious? One who knows that he is a valuable jewel. He will be vigilant of his ears and eyes. Why do you think some people are vigilant of their tongue [and words]? Who becomes pious? One who knows he is a valuable jewel. The students of the late Ayatollah Qazi used to say, “We noticed that a part of the late Qazi’s tongue was different in color from the rest. It was red and burnt. We wanted to ask him about it; we were shy to ask. But we asked, ‘Why is your tongue like this?’ He replied, ‘I kept a stone on my tongue for more than twenty years. I usually kept it so that when I wanted to talk, this stone would stop me from talking. In this way, I remembered to control what I say and would think about what I want to say.’” Well, if you keep a stone on your tongue for twenty years, your tongue will become different!
This is piety and being vigilant. [One might say,] “Isn’t that hard? You’re making life hard!” No, it’s easy. One does this energetically too. What happens that a person easily and energetically watches over his piety? Tell me dear friends. He is a jewel, has understood this and doesn’t want to lose this jewel. This is the result of him seeing his good points. A part of self-awareness is seeing your value. You are valuable. The Commander of the Faithful (as) said, “May God have mercy on the one who knows his own value.”
If you have a diamond in your bag or in your pocket that’s worth a hundred billion, and you and your family are poor, when you are going along, you won’t get tired of holding this diamond, of paying attention to it, or of the cramping of your muscles during this trip at all! You will hold it very tightly! You will be careful of others thinking they may be a thief! You won’t sleep on the train or bus at all. [You’ll say,] “No, no, I shouldn’t sleep.” You’re energetic. After getting home, you will do a couple of somersaults too! [Someone says,] “But you’re exhausted.” [You’ll say,] “I have a jewel and have plans for it. Move aside!”
See how good you are. You’ll be vigilant. What else can I say? This is why a person is very regretful on the Day of Judgment. This day is called the “Day of Intense Regret” [in the Qur’an]. Who becomes pious? One who knows he is a valuable jewel does.

The Way to Eliminate Jealousy

The Holy Prophet of Islam (s) said, “All people are jealous,” and “Jealousy doesn’t harm the jealous person if he doesn’t speak or act based on his jealousy.”
So, if jealousy springs up in your heart, ignore it. Let it be stifled. If you put a bowl over a fire, air won’t reach it. It goes out. Put a bowl over the fire of jealousy to quiet it.
Don’t say anything based on jealousy. Don’t even move your eyebrows up and down based on jealousy. Don’t even say “Ah!” or “Aha!” Some people don’t say anything from jealousy; but, when the person they are jealous about is unsuccessful they say, “Aha!” That’s it. You let oxygen reach it.
Don’t tease others from jealousy. A tradition also says you shouldn’t give advice based on jealousy. A person is jealous, but he collects himself. For example, his classmate has succeeded and gotten a high score. He was given a prize. The jealous person will say, “What shall I do?” “Nothing. He succeeded. Be happy.” He says, “I have to do something.” “It is too obvious if you curse him. It’s clear you are jealous.” He says, “No, I am polite.” “So don’t say anything! You have become jealous.” He says, “No, wait.” Then suddenly he tells the other person, “Hey, know your value! Try to maintain this success.” See! At the end, he said something.
I don’t want to ruin the idea of advising others, so that whenever someone gives advice you say he is jealous. But, sometimes advice is from jealousy. Jealousy is not just some people’s attribute. Everyone is entangled with it. Put a bowl over the fire of jealousy to quiet it.

“Ah!”

All of your life is indebted to these moments!

See, my friends, I want to tell you something. During these moments when you are listening to a lecture, whether I who am not a good speaker talks, or a decent person talks, release your heart. Suddenly a person sighs from inside his heart and says, “Ah! I have lost so much!” Or, he sighs from his heart and says, “I would really like to reach that spiritual station!” All of your life is indebted to these moments! Don’t say, “I went to a speech and became motivated. When I came out I became despondent again.” God doesn’t forget these moments.
God is willing to forgive thousands of your sins, thousands of your wrong desires, and thousands of your pursuing your carnal desires. God is kind. He says, “My servant came once and said, ‘Ah! I wished l loved God that much.’ Angels, adjust everything based on this single ‘Ah.’”
Struggle hard to be able to go to a gathering where it can prompt an ‘Ah’ from inside you. Say, “Nice! I went and sighed, burned, felt sorry for my past, and wished for good things.” God is witness that if you sigh once, even if it isn’t manifested in you and you become a bad person later on, this will still affect your next generation!
God is witness that if you sigh for good things, it sometimes even affects those around you. You may try to move away from God till the end of your life, but He says, “No, do you remember how you sighed the last night of the month of Ramadan? I won’t let you go!” You say, “God, leave me alone! At that time, I got caught up in it and sighed.” God says, “No! That was beautiful for Me. I won’t forget that.” The Holy Prophet (s) said, “Benefit from the gardens of Heaven.” People asked, “Where are Heaven’s gardens?” He replied, “The gatherings where they remember God.” These gatherings remind you of good things. Suddenly, you say deeply, “I wish I was like that!”
Friends, the martyrs became a martyr in this same way. [During the war,] I witnessed this. In a gathering, he longed for it and he longed for God. God would say, “Angels! He longed for it and said, ‘That’s not bad!’ work on him.” Then, the person would say, “No, I’m not trying to become a martyr.” But, God twisted his life, took him and made him fall in love more and more. Then he would cry, “God, when will You take me to Yourself?” Do you know when this happened and you showed your true feelings?! Remember you said in that gathering, “I wish at the moment when I am becoming a martyr, Imam Mahdi puts my head on his lap!” Done! There’s a light in you! A tradition says, “If God wants to make a servant grow, it will start from a small luminous spot.”
Imam Sadiq (‘a) said, “Whenever the Almighty God wants good for a servant, He will create a luminous spot in his heart…” [Osul Kafi, vol. 1, p. 166]

==============================
At times, a young person comes to me in the yard of the Imam’s shrine and asks, “What should I do for Imam Reza (as) to look at me?” What does this mean to say, “What should I do for the Imam…”?! If he hadn’t looked at you, you wouldn’t have been in the shrine, my dear.
A person asks, “How should I visit the Imam for my pilgrimage to be accepted?” I swear I don’t know either. If you don’t know, tell this to Imam Reza (as). Say, “O Imam, I don’t know how to visit you for my pilgrimage to be accepted.” Don’t say, “I just want the Imam to glance at me.” This is bad and impolite. Why should I want him to just glance at me? I want Imam Reza (as) to welcome me very much. Let everyone who has come to the shrine feel regretful that Imam Reza (as) has shown mercy to a person who was behind everyone else.
O Imam, show your mercy and kindness. Do a miracle and take my hand. Those who are already good are good themselves! Show your power and help me get ahead. You are able to do so. When beseeching God or the Household of the Prophet, some people act as if they have gone to a shop across the street. Such a person thinks, “If I want to borrow some money from the shop keeper, he’ll give one million tomans at the most. He won’t give one billion! I’ll ask for one hundred so it won’t be hard for him.” Yes, the shop across the street is like this.
But Imam Reza (as) isn’t like this. He can give great amounts! When giving, they pay attention to our hope in them. Is there anyone tonight who says he or she wants to get ahead of everyone? “I want you to welcome me more than everyone else.” Did anyone say this?! You didn’t say this! Then on the Day of Judgment, they’ll tell you that you didn’t ask for this. You’ll see one of his pilgrims has a better position. “What did he do?” “He asked for it.” “I wish I had asked for this too.” “You could have.” O Imam Reza (as), welcome me very much. Let everyone who has come to the shrine feel regretful that Imam Reza (as) has shown mercy to a person who was behind everyone else. Do a miracle and take my hand.

Don’t brood over yourself so much!

If you brood over yourself, you will become corrupted! May I be sacrificed for you, don’t appreciate yourself. Never mind. OK! You are very…! Never mind! Never mind please! Don’t brood over yourself so much. A tradition says, “A wise person considers other people’s small deeds to be great. He considers his own big deeds to be small.” He says, “I didn’t do anything.” He really believes in this!
Some people brood over themselves very much. They appreciate themselves very much. They brood over why no one else appreciates them. Ooh! They are so sorrowful. This is an unhealthy attitude. I have seen these kinds of people later turn against the revolution. “Sir, what does this have to do with becoming against the revolution?!” This is how one should look at things. We should look at the root of all the entanglements. I see this person will one day have problems with Guardianship. I’m telling you! Unless his problem is solved. Never mind please.
In a meeting, I was talking about giving a sacrifice. I said, “One of the sacrifices a person should give is his talents.” The audience wanted to kill me! “What?! The whole philosophy of the educational
system is for talents to develop and flourish.” I said, “Ok, I believe in talents too. God willing, all of your talents will be used. The Commander of the Faithful, Ali (a), had the talent to govern the world. But, he did farming for 25 years. I’m sorry to use this word, but when he farmed he didn’t nag. He did farming nicely. He didn’t nag.”
Sometimes, God wants a person not to be appreciated. Don’t brood over yourself so much, or you’ll become corrupted. Maybe God wants you not to be appreciated, Mr.! Try. Do your work. If they don’t appreciate you in a situation, smile and look at God. Say, “God, I’m satisfied.” Nice!
May I be sacrificed for the Prophet of Islam (s), who all the Immaculate ones (a) were sacrificed for. When the Prophet (s) talked about himself, he would immediately say, “There is no pride.” God has given these. “There is no pride,” was one of the catch phrases of the Holy Prophet (s). He didn’t see himself, but we see ourselves.
If you brood over yourself, you will become corrupted! OK! You are very…! Never mind! Never mind please!
