This verse from the Qur’an is unique. Why? Because the greatest command to the Prophet for struggle is mentioned in it. Struggle without a sword, is called a “kabir” (great) struggle. We have usually heard of an “akbar” (major) struggle. “Major” struggle or self-improvement, is the opposite of “asghar” (minor) struggle [war]. Major struggle means it’s bigger than a minor struggle. But a great struggle means it is absolutely great. This verse about the great struggle without swords was revealed in Mecca. Against what? What did the unbelievers say that the Prophet (s) needed to struggle greatly? The great struggle wasn’t about idols or a deviated worshiping. It was about politics.
“So do not follow the unbelievers, and strive against them a great striving…” [Qur’an 25:52] This struggle wasn’t using the sword, because it was in Mecca. A hard struggle without a sword. It means that there was a great conflict. “So do not follow the unbelievers.” What had they said that the Prophet should not have obeyed them?
When I recite this verse, I don’t think the unbelievers had suggested that the Prophet (s) drink with them!
“[They didn’t say] circumambulate the Ka’ba, pray, or worship idols like us.”
It’s unlikely they said such a thing for God to talk about it. The Holy Prophet (s) didn’t do such things before Islam either. Let’s recite the previous verse. They said, “You’re the Prophet of God for the city of Mecca. Ok. Ask God to send another prophet for Medina and another one for Ta’if. Each nation should have a prophet so that there won’t be any conflict”. Was this a bad idea?! It’s an interesting solution.
“You be the prophet of the Quraysh.” They didn’t deny his prophethood. “We accept that you’re a prophet. Ask God to send a prophet for us and one for them.” They didn’t want a person from that nation to be under the supervision of a person from this nation. Isn’t this a political matter?! It wasn’t about beliefs. They didn’t have any problem with prophethood or with him personally. God says, “O Prophet, don’t obey them.” They were suggesting some kind of expedient.
“It seemed reasonable too.”
It wasn’t bad. We’re talking like the unbelievers now!
“Yes. They could each have their own prophet.”
Then there wouldn’t be conflicts, since each nation has its own culture.
“Each nation does things in its own way.”
“So do not follow the unbelievers, and strive against them a great striving...” The true reason for not believing in the prophet as the Qur’an states was for political reasons and for power. It wasn’t even wealth. They said, “O Prophet, we’ll give you any money we earn from the Ka’ba.” He answered, “If you put the sun in one of my hands…”
“This was about that.”
Yes, their problem wasn’t wealth.
They even accepted a kind of managing for the Prophet. They said, “Be our ruler, but don’t say you’re a prophet.” So what’s the difference between the prophet ruling as a prophet and him ruling as a regular person?
“They’re both ruling.”
They’re both ruling, but they objected to him. We are talking about before people accepted Islam. Then some became Muslims. So what is our greatest expectation from them? Do we expect them to have understood what kind of politics they were objecting to? Qadir took place after 10 years, but they still didn’t accept it. After 25 years, Imam Ali (as) became the Caliph. [The question is that] they had accepted everything at that point and had experience too. What kind of politics was it that Imam Ali (as) wanted them to understand but they didn’t?
“They even killed him.”
Yes. We are now waiting for that kind of politics to come about. It’s impossible for us to neglect this. We must fix this to become ready for the Reappearance of the Savior.
The Prophet’s (s) Trust
Prophet Muhammad (s) migrated. He said, “Dear Ali, sleep in my place. After I have gone, bring my Household too.” One of the members of the Prophet’s Household was Fatimah Zahra, his daughter. She wasn’t married yet. The Holy Prophet (s) trusted his beloved Ali so much that he asked him to bring his Household. The Holy Prophet (s) migrated.
Ali (‘a) prepared a howdah for Fatimah Zahra (‘a) so that she could sit in it on the camel on the way. He himself climbed on a mount. Suddenly the polytheists of Mecca realized and said, “We can take the Prophet’s daughter captive so that the Prophet will have to return. Didn’t we chase him and he escaped from us? So, we can take his daughter captive.” They raced after this small caravan. But, they neglected the fact that the head of this small caravan was Ali (‘a)! For the first time, the heroes of Arab felt Ali’s (‘a) power when they circled around this small caravan like wolves. The Commander of the Faithful (‘a) came down from his mount. He stood in front of the camel of the pure Fatimah. He fought in such a way that they ran away and didn’t chase them anymore.
The Commander of the Faithful (‘a) slowly came next to Fatimah Zahra’s (‘a) camel. He said, “O daughter of the Prophet, Fatimah, you weren’t scared?” Fatimah Zahra (‘a) replied, “O Ali! Whoever has you is not afraid of anything.” The Commander of the Faithful (‘a) didn’t ride on his mount anymore. He held the rope of Fatimah Zahra’s (‘a) camel and walked the rest of the way to Medina. When they got close to the Prophet’s (s) tent, he was waiting for them outside of the city. The Prophet came out of his tent. Ali Bin Abi Talib gave the rope of the camel to the Prophet. “O Prophet of God, I have brought you your trust.” The Prophet hugged Ali and cried very much! Very much. “I brought your trust unharmed.”
But, alas for another time when Ali said, “O Prophet, I have brought back your trust.” Ali had no explanation to give. What he said has been recorded. He said one sentence. He said, “O Prophet of God, Fatimah will tell you the story herself.”

Dear youth, start looking at the bigger picture and larger perspective, your life will change!
The Prophet (s) told Abazar, “Abazar, determine a goal for each time you take action and each time you don’t take action. Have an intention, even for your eating and sleeping. If you don’t make an intention, you will be one of the negligent.” When hearing this one might think that being negligent is not that bad! So we’re negligent. But the Prophet continued, “Negligent people are those about whom the Qur’an states, ‘They are like cattle; rather they are more astray.’” [Qur’an 7: 179]
[Imam Ali (as) said,] “The wisest people are those who think more about the outcome.” They look at the results very much, how about you? Who is the wisest among us? He’s surely the one who looks at the goal more. One should have a goal and should think about it. One should love his goal. I suggest you love your goals. Be strong. Do away with goals that one cannot fall in love with!
It’s one person’s goal to become a doctor. This is his highest goal! Of course, becoming a doctor is good. But this is his highest goal. Ok, imagine trying to love this goal!! O my doctorate degree! O the white paper! O the signature of the Minister of Science and the Head of the university on my paper! Won’t this repel you?! You can’t love such a goal. Throw these away. Be a real human being. Choose a goal you are able to fall in love with.
What’s your goal? Let’s choose a goal that is reachable. Can we reach it? The Almighty God says, “If you choose any goal except Me, I’ll ruin it. I won’t let you reach it. I’ll frustrate you from reaching any goal or wish you choose except Me!”
Almighty God told Prophet David (as), “You are very eager for My Heaven.” He said, “God, you know it.” Of course, this is good for a person to be able to think of Heaven and be eager for it. The Almighty God elevated Prophet David (as) a degree and said, “So when will your eagerness for Me increase?” According to a tradition, it seems Prophet David was just becoming familiar with this concept. He asked, “Who are those that are eager for You?” God said, “Those who are untainted by any impurity. There’s no stain on them.”
Prophet David (as) was drowned in this description that the Almighty God was giving about those who are eager for Him – something higher than enthusiasm for Heaven. If we spend 90% of our lives choosing a [correct] goal, we have profited. Be a real human being! Choose a goal that you are able to fall in love with! Let’s choose a goal that is reachable.

Who says you should go to Karbala whenever you are in the mood?!
What if after the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (‘a.j.), they say, “Whoever went on the Arbaeen walk, was effective in preparing for the reappearance.” If your grandchild or child asks you, “Dad, did you go on the Arbaeen walk,” what will you answer?
Making a pilgrimage is something serious. You may go to the shrine when you are in the mood. That’s nice. You liked to go. When you go to Karbala you should say, “I am ready to help you.” Suddenly, everything becomes serious!
At least you should be able to say, “If I couldn’t go myself, I sent one person and paid his way. He was young and able to go to the shrine of Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (‘a) so it wouldn’t be empty.” “I am ready to help you.” This phrase is a part of the Arbaeen supplication. I have come to help you.
If you can’t go yourself, send your child, neighbour, or colleague. Go yourself too. Say, “Imam I have come to show and announce my presence, lest my name not be recorded here.” Imam Husayn (‘a) is holding a eulogy ceremony himself for Arbaeen.
Shall I give you some strange news? A person may wonder at this until the end of time! Some religious groups hold gatherings during the year, but they don’t do anything for Arbaeen. Isn’t that interesting? They spend and work hard for their eulogy ceremonies. But, about the eulogy that Imam Husayn (‘a) holds himself, they say, “There are others who will go.” What about you?
Imam Sadiq (‘a) saw one of his friends. The Imam (‘a) said, “I have heard that there are some people who love us and follow us, who haven’t been to Karbala for four years.” The man replied, “Many people are like this!” Imam Sadiq (‘a) said, “What will these people tell the Prophet of God?” The man said, “How often should a person go on this pilgrimage?” The Imam said, “Poor people, once a year. Rich people, twice a year.”
Should one go to Karbala based on his mood and when he wants to? Where have they said this? In which tradition has this been written? A soldier should go show and announce his presence.
Because we act like this and look at it in this way, the reappearance still hasn’t happened yet. What if after the reappearance of Imam Mahdi (‘a.j.), they say, “Whoever went on the Arbaeen walk, was effective in preparing for the reappearance.” If your grandchild or child asks you, “Dad, did you go on the Arbaeen walk,” what will you answer? A soldier should go show and announce his presence.
We have advanced in spiritual matters, Itikaf, and making pilgrimages. Praise God, see how many people come to Imam Reza’s (‘a) shrine or to the Jamkaran Mosque. But friends, we still haven’t reached the needed growth. Only two million people go on Arbaeen from Iran? How do you justify this? Didn’t Imam Hasan Askari (‘a) say this is a sign of being our follower? Don’t you feel responsible? Where will you be on Arbaeen?!

Eliminating Stinginess and Becoming Generous
The Quran says, “Therefore be careful of (your duty to) Allah as much as you can, and hear and obey and spend…” It brings one example of obeying, “Spend.”
The Quran says, “But when good comes upon him, he is grudging.” Spend means don’t be stingy. Spend. What did you spend today? Spending is not just giving money. A tradition says, “Helping a weak person is charity.” Someone couldn’t do something and I helped him with my ability. I shared my ability. This is spending.
Spending doesn’t mean that he is poor. We all need each other’s help. We live in a system of cooperation. Help others. Spend. The verse continues, "…and spend, it is better for your souls; and whoever is saved from the greediness of his soul, these it is that are the successful.” Greed (shohha) is more severe than stinginess.
What’s the difference between greed and stinginess? A tradition explains it delicately. Someone asked Imam Ali (a), “What is ‘greediness of the soul’ that has been mentioned in the Quran?” He answered, “It is a person who is twice as stingy.” A stingy person doesn’t give his property to others. A person who is more stingy wants other people’s property too, and not give it away! It hasn’t become his property yet; whether legal or illegal money, he doesn’t want to spend it. Human greed makes a person miserable!
A person who is not greedy says, “If I had one billion Tomans, I would give 800 million to my friends to solve their problems and use 200 million to solve my own problem.” A greedy person says, “If I had one billion Tomans, I would use 200 million to solve my own problem. Then I would give… No, why should I give? I would buy another place.” He feels jealous when others have money. “Why is this darned money in their hands?” “What would you do with it?” “None of your business!” He is so rude!
A tradition says that if you don’t want to be like this, you have to spend. It is recommended to spend mornings, nights, and every day. “We will collect it and give it at the end of the month.” “How much do you want to spend at the end of the month?” “1,000 Tomans.” “You don’t need to give 1,000. Just give 30 Tomans, but give half a Toman every morning and half every afternoon.” “Why?” “This is what is wanted from you.”
This spending is really hard for some people. Do it continuously. You don’t need to give a lot. Give a lesser amount, but do it continuously. A tradition says that if you want to give a donation, give it to your child to give it. Let him learn from his childhood. Give it away. “Here my child, give it away.” Give it away.
For example, a screenwriter has written a screenplay. Someone helped him and they argue over it. “It’s mine. Go away! It was mine originally.” The Quran says, “Grudging.” Give it away. Tell him, “Write it in your own name.” Give it away. This is a kind of Zakat (poor tax) too. A tradition says, “The Zakat of knowledge is to spread it.”
“No, quickly register this in the Ministry of Guidance.” “Grudging!” We have instilled grudging into our social systems. We don’t share our abilities. “This was due to my ingenuity. We are five people on this project. It didn’t come to their minds! Each idea was mine. Should I be equal with them?!” Such a society should be damned, because no one is willing to share. Damned in this world. We don’t damn for the Hereafter, but it will be damned. We don’t need to curse. Give it away.
Everyone opens a company for himself. They try to keep the secrets of the company so that no one can use them. No one take their ideas. “The ideas are ours. We won’t give them to anyone!” These are un-Islamic behaviours.
A tradition says if you don’t want to be like this, you have to spend. Every morning and night. This is what is wanted from you. This is really hard for some people. Do it continuously. Give a lesser amount, but continuously. Give it away. “Here my child, give it away.” Give it away.

Why do you want to become an employee?
Don’t be afraid; take a risk!
Do you agree an employee doesn’t work as hard as one who works for himself? How many hours does an employee work usefully in Iran? I ask you not to answer me. It’s such a disgrace. I ask you not to answer! Who can stop bribery? No judiciary can! A government, which has many employees, cannot stop corruption! It’s impossible! Even if you stop bribery, you definitely cannot stop incompetence.
A person asked Imam Sadiq (‘a), “A person is working in trade and making money. If he works for someone else and is paid as an employee or a worker, they’ll pay him the same as when he is working in trade himself. Is it alright to do this?” The Imam replied, “He shouldn’t be an employee when he can make money himself. He should get his sustenance from God, the Almighty, and work in trade. If he becomes an employee, he has blocked sustenance from himself.” If a person, who can make money himself becomes an employee or a hireling, he has blocked his sustenance. Why did he block his sustenance? God says, “You didn’t want to take the risk? You clung to an employer? So go; I’ve blocked your sustenance.”
Imam Ali (‘a) said, “If you can manage to do so, don’t allow there to be a wealthy person between you and God (to give you a salary). Because, in any case you will receive what is yours and your share.” [Nahj al-Balaghah, letter no. 31] You’ll receive your share. Don’t be afraid; take a risk! Why do you want to become an employee? Are you afraid you cannot make money yourself?
The Imam tells us not to be afraid. Be brave and you’ll receive your share. Don’t be afraid! Take a risk. Why do you become an employee? You’ll receive your share. One may say, “We have honorable employees too. Talk about this. Don’t disrespect them!” “Yes, we do have honorable employees. But, that’s all I can say.” “Praise them more.” “I don’t want to. I’m afraid people will become honorable employees (instead of working for themselves.)” “But, every workplace has some employees and workers. Everyone can’t be an employer!” “I’m saying that if ten people get together, start producing something and work together, won’t they all be employers?!” “I can’t allow that! I am more capable than others! I should work and others earn money from this?!”
Oh! Look at these people who claim to be awaiting the Imam! Being an employee is not good, unless a person is forced to.

The Way to Eliminate Jealousy
The Holy Prophet of Islam (s) said, “All people are jealous,” and “Jealousy doesn’t harm the jealous person if he doesn’t speak or act based on his jealousy.”
So, if jealousy springs up in your heart, ignore it. Let it be stifled. If you put a bowl over a fire, air won’t reach it. It goes out. Put a bowl over the fire of jealousy to quiet it.
Don’t say anything based on jealousy. Don’t even move your eyebrows up and down based on jealousy. Don’t even say “Ah!” or “Aha!” Some people don’t say anything from jealousy; but, when the person they are jealous about is unsuccessful they say, “Aha!” That’s it. You let oxygen reach it.
Don’t tease others from jealousy. A tradition also says you shouldn’t give advice based on jealousy. A person is jealous, but he collects himself. For example, his classmate has succeeded and gotten a high score. He was given a prize. The jealous person will say, “What shall I do?” “Nothing. He succeeded. Be happy.” He says, “I have to do something.” “It is too obvious if you curse him. It’s clear you are jealous.” He says, “No, I am polite.” “So don’t say anything! You have become jealous.” He says, “No, wait.” Then suddenly he tells the other person, “Hey, know your value! Try to maintain this success.” See! At the end, he said something.
I don’t want to ruin the idea of advising others, so that whenever someone gives advice you say he is jealous. But, sometimes advice is from jealousy. Jealousy is not just some people’s attribute. Everyone is entangled with it. Put a bowl over the fire of jealousy to quiet it.
