Divine qualities of holy personalities are a platform for becoming role models for us. We need to move on from merely praising such divine characteristics to following such role models. This speech by Dr. Sayed Hassan Raza provides a chance to observe the life of Fatima (A.S.) in the context of patience. Al-Rasoul Islamic Society, Halifax - Canada

[0:01]recite muham muham in our holy personalities the attributes of our holy
[0:22]personalities there are two views we can look at them one view
[0:27]is the Divine View and the other is the human aspect of
[0:32]those qualities divinely God Allah subhanahu ta'ala selects prophets imams masum by
[0:44]his own choice and then Allah subhana ta'ala blesses them with special
[0:51]characteristics for example for our Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him they
[0:57]say he had the best of moral values and one view of
[1:05]Muslims one simple way some AMA they Define being Muslim is we
[1:11]need to improve on our moral values such that we could bring
[1:17]it as close as possible towards the Milestone set by our Prophet
[1:21]similarly if we look at the personality ofam we would see a
[1:33]number of titles given to her from the god or by the
[1:38]prophet of God peace be upon Him Al zahar Al Alik a
[1:45]lot of titles uh these title they are given by the prophet
[1:52]from the God and they have two meanings one is for the
[2:01]Believers to tell the Believers how confirmed and reliable the personality We
[2:12]are following is she's sadika she's Razia she is B so that
[2:18]we should have no doubt in the authenticity of the role model
[2:24]we will follow we are sure that the leader We are following
[2:27]is the best because this leader has these qualities but The Human
[2:34]Side this is the Divine side God gives characteristics and the personalities
[2:38]bear those characteristics and the human aspect is they would bring these
[2:43]characteristics into their life they would act upon it as Prophet peace
[2:52]be upon Him acted and he set up a standard of morals
[2:54]for us and we are to follow similarly other holy personalities so
[3:02]they use those attributes those characteristics those qualities given to them by
[3:07]Allah subhana tala and they LED their life by having exhibition of
[3:16]those characteristics and they set up that as an example to us
[3:19]so that the followers of those personalities could follow those things and
[3:24]could improve our current life and the Hereafter based on that following
[3:30]what we do is usually we would uh that's my own perspective
[3:39]so we would spend a lot of time on praising the Divine
[3:42]characteristics of the Holy personalities we follow which are from God say
[3:47]Allah Imam Ali was this much Brave and he had this characteristic
[3:51]this characteristics similarly say she has these characteristics but when it comes
[4:00]to follow the model which is set up for us um I'm
[4:03]sorry to say so that's where our um examination begins so we
[4:10]fall short to it so we pra so we have a leader
[4:11]who had this this this characteristic but when we are there to
[4:16]follow the model set up by that leader we would not be
[4:23]that strong enough to go that path uh looking at this I
[4:31]tried to uh gave a view of the life of sayam from
[4:35]only one perspective of our life patience sub so I might not
[4:44]be presenting anything new because it's so much discussed topic that Mah
[4:49]we all knowledgeable on the topic but it's just a view to
[4:53]look at how the element of sub which were the Divine characteristics
[4:58]blessed uh from Allah subhana waala to and how she exercised sub
[5:06]patience in her life to set up an example for us to
[5:13]followers when you look at sa uh again there are two angles
[5:20]we can look at s usually we we will look at one
[5:21]of those angles more than the other for example When someone tells
[5:28]us uh to observe patience what comes to our mind is whenever
[5:32]we have a time of distress when we are worried when we
[5:38]are puzzled by the challenges of this life so we have to
[5:43]do Ser we have to be patient and we have to wait
[5:48]for bad that bad time to go away for example if we
[5:50]lose a loved one we would say Okay that was what was
[5:57]supposed to go to God and that's what the will of the
[6:01]God is we have to be patient we have to wait and
[6:03]as the time passes my grief would decrease if we have uh
[6:10]Financial hardships we would say Allah subhana tala is the best Ric
[6:15]so we should thanks God what we have and we should expect
[6:17]from his bounties that he will bless us more and we should
[6:23]restrain ourselves whatever the uh whatever the provisions we have if we
[6:29]are sick we will fall back to some imams uh saying we
[6:35]says okay sickness from God is a blessing because sickness would shed
[6:39]our sins away and if someone becomes M sick people would come
[6:46]as per the Hadith of prophet peace be upon him asking for
[6:50]Dua so whatever the difficulty in life we feel then we say
[6:55]we should be patient so we should pray to God so that
[6:59]this bad time is over but there's another aspect of sa that
[7:04]is related to the control of our NS that is related to
[7:11]when we are powerful we can exercise some power but we restrain
[7:15]ourselves from acting that power for example one aspect of the control
[7:24]of Na is that we could do something which is against the
[7:27]laws of God Allah subhana tala but we would respect ourself because
[7:31]we want to follow God's path we don't want to go against
[7:36]God's path the other is we have power of something for example
[7:39]if a stronger brother has a conflict with a little relatively weaker
[7:43]brother so stronger brother can beat the weaker brother but he would
[7:47]say well I will not because I have to restrain my power
[7:51]if I have loan someone some money that person cannot return the
[7:54]money so I have the power to squeeze him on and get
[7:58]the money back but I would say okay I would follow the
[8:01]teaching of Islam either I will give him more time or I
[8:07]will forgive if I could right so similarly if we are that
[8:10]we Face a lot we are having an argument with another person
[8:16]and we would see the point we are making it is logical
[8:21]and that person is behaving in a manner as he does not
[8:24]understand that point very well he's acting as a Jah as an
[8:31]ignorant and is doing a discussion for the sake of discussion not
[8:34]making any point then at some time we feel like we are
[8:38]losing our mind but we distrain ourself and say okay I should
[8:41]be cool and I should just let it away let it go
[8:45]away so these are other conditions where we have to observe s
[8:48]and we will see in the Holy life of sayam both these
[8:56]types of sub they were exercised now when we look at the
[9:05]life of s f zah we we cannot ignore the circumstances in
[9:08]which she was born uh there's there's a lot written about the
[9:13]social circumstances in those days uh but I was looking at I
[9:20]found a a translation of a Arabic poet at that time and
[9:24]he said in that poetry whenever a father in that time thinks
[9:32]about the future of daughter so three kind of son-in-law comes to
[9:37]that father's mind so three forms of son-in-law come to the mind
[9:41]of that father first kind of son-in-law is the home where that
[9:48]girl is residing with parents second kind of son-in-law is a real
[9:51]son-in-law to whom she would be married and the home she would
[9:57]live after marriage and the Third Kind of son law is the
[10:00]grave and that poet says the best son-in-law for a father in
[10:05]those days is the GRE so the father would wish if my
[10:08]daughter goes straight to grave that is the best that was the
[10:15]reality of having a daughter in that time when sociologist today they
[10:26]examine why that was so so two reasons come up why people
[10:30]have that um attitude towards having a girl at that time economic
[10:37]and spiritual economic reason was the big business was the Warfare so
[10:44]you had a war you get a war Bounty that you earning
[10:47]you distribute more you have fights more Bounty you would earn and
[10:52]that would be your livelihood along with the trading and being a
[10:59]shepherd and in all these three kinds of economic activities always Sons
[11:04]they have an edge over a daughter because daughters were supposed to
[11:10]live at home and take the household things the second factor of
[11:20]spirituality that was based on a concept as honor dignity Integrity respect
[11:24]they say all these things they are tied to our daughters and
[11:29]the dignity or the honor of the family could be destroyed due
[11:36]to two reasons either the daughter could marry someone who's not suitable
[11:42]or lower in social status and that would be uh a destroying
[11:46]element for the family or the other reason was the daughters they
[11:53]were considered to be part of bounty War Bounty so if someone
[11:55]conquers an area so they would take the females as slaves so
[12:00]nobody wanted to get this humiliation when either the daughter is marrying
[12:05]someone unsuitable or the daughter is taken as V bounty so people
[12:09]never wanted to have daughters so in this situation uh was a
[12:16]time when say F zah she appeared to this word and the
[12:22]world saw a transition which was never witnessed and I I never
[12:26]witness even these days when a father would come up with such
[12:34]a kind of etiquette that if he's going on a trip so
[12:37]he would see that daughter at the last and he comes back
[12:41]from a trip he would see that daughter the first one and
[12:47]when the daughter would come he would rise up and he would
[12:50]offer her own space to sit to his daughter so that was
[12:57]a big transition in the society at that time but that was
[13:01]a little uh kind of Passage just to describe what were the
[13:03]circumstances she was born in if we look at the life of
[13:10]say F zah we can we can examine the life in three
[13:12]parts her life uh before marriage married life and her life after
[13:21]the departure of um her father uh Prophet Muhammad peace be upon
[13:26]him when we look at our life before marriage at the very
[13:34]tender age of when that was the beginning of the religion of
[13:38]Islam and Prophet Muhammad peace be upon me was preaching he faced
[13:43]a lot of challenges as we all know she might have she
[13:51]might have heard someone abusing his Noble father she might have heard
[13:56]someone destroying gar rage on uh her Noble father she might have
[14:04]seen the wounds of her father from the stoning of the infidels
[14:11]she might have dressed those wounds and there was a time when
[14:15]Prophet Muhammad peace be upon Him lost two of the big supports
[14:23]after the departure of uh uh Abu Talib Alam andam these were
[14:27]the two big supports and they were the comfort at home for
[14:30]the prophet peace be upon him and when he lost both of
[14:35]them one after the other in a short period of time all
[14:40]these atrocities they reached to a Peak at that time in that
[14:45]very young age she was the big source of comfort to her
[14:53]father she used to get all those feelings shared by his by
[14:57]her father she used to console her father dressed her wounds and
[15:02]that was the reason uh she was given a very famous title
[15:07]uh by Prophet Muhammad peace be upon Him om May the mother
[15:11]of her own father because she took care of her father this
[15:16]way and when you are young and you feel so many challenges
[15:23]mockery humiliation uh stoning uh having the filthy material on your Noble
[15:30]dad so that requires a lot of patience to go through all
[15:33]that a a child of 10 age will just not bear all
[15:40]that what she she went through and she she stood fast all
[15:47]this situation and there was a time when there were conspiracy of
[15:51]Mah killing the prophet of God peace be upon him there was
[15:53]time when she was left behind in Mecca and the prophet went
[15:58]before and she was supposed to follow a prophet to Medina and
[16:01]there was a the whole house was surrounded by people who were
[16:06]armed with swords and other kinds of ammunition at that time so
[16:10]she faced all that and that were the circumstances uh she went
[16:17]through before uh marriage time and she stood fast with all that
[16:21]and she went through all these challenges through patience and she consoled
[16:26]her father and earned this title mother of her own father and
[16:34]we will see uh this kind of element continued even um in
[16:41]Medina uh we should not forget the U incident of oh so
[16:47]Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him his face was seriously injured and
[16:51]she might have seen that angered face she might have dressed that
[16:55]face and uh she might have uh received them when Imam aliam
[17:02]and Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him they came home and as
[17:06]for one narration IM Ali requested say faaam so would you kindly
[17:15]take my sword because this sword has exceeded all the limits of
[17:19]faithfulness and Prophet Muhammad endorsed him by saying yes my daughter your
[17:24]husband has passed all the limits of faithful fullness and was so
[17:30]instrumental to save Islam and the prophet of God at a very
[17:36]critical time when nobody was arounded so that were the circumstances where
[17:41]she faced challenges day by day at the tender age I mean
[17:47]before marriage and after marriage in the same circumstances and he went
[17:52]through all that with a lot of patience when it comes to
[17:58]her second phase of life the married life uh that is a
[18:04]there is a big compliment which Imam Ali uh gave her by
[18:07]saying that she was a flower of heaven and I still feel
[18:15]her fragrance in my mind even when that flower has vised has
[18:21]gone right so that was the kind of impression she left over
[18:24]her husband if you look at her domestic life instead of of
[18:31]having such a special position so she as we all know she
[18:34]used to do all her household things by herself up to the
[18:41]point when Islam become stronger and um started having uh some water
[18:46]captures and she was awarded with uh lady fizza at that time
[18:53]may God be pleased with her so that's where my other notion
[18:55]of sber comes into action so she was she had power she
[19:00]was she was a mistress and she has a slave and the
[19:02]slave should do all the household and the mistress should justess and
[19:07]that's where the self-restraint and that's where the limitation to your PO
[19:13]comes into play what she did as we all know she distributed
[19:16]the work equally with Lady fza may God be pleased with her
[19:22]she said okay we will be sharing the workload of household things
[19:25]and when Imam Ali asked her uh oh Lady of the house
[19:33]you have never complained to me about the domestic system that you
[19:38]need something uh in the house here and there or some supplies
[19:41]are less or more she said you should not expect from me
[19:45]because my father advised me that I had to be patience in
[19:50]my married life so I don't want to bother you with the
[19:52]domestic issues because you have to take care of the external issues
[19:59]which are more sever than the domestic issues so she exercised even
[20:04]that did not stop till the last day of her life as
[20:10]there are uh Traditions that she had a dream and she saw
[20:17]a night before her departure she met she met Prophet Muhammad peace
[20:20]be upon him and she was told that soon she would be
[20:25]in Jenna to meet her father peace be upon him and she
[20:27]had an idea that that might be her last day but if
[20:32]you look at the tradition look at the history even on that
[20:34]last day with all those wounds and the condition she was in
[20:40]she managed to do all the household chores and she feed the
[20:44]kids and did all those things which was supposed to do before
[20:47]she gets set to her final beted so if you are knowing
[20:54]that that would be your last day so you would not do
[20:56]that all that with courage but that's how she EX side the
[21:01]element of sa for us so that we could see that we
[21:05]have to dispense our duties whatever the circumstances are which are uh
[21:11]upon us to do and that's what she exibited to us if
[21:14]we look at the third phase of our life um that is
[21:18]a very tragic phase tragic phase after the departure of prophet Muhammad
[21:25]peace be upon so she had a number of issues to deal
[21:29]with the rightful position of her husband that was concealed confiscated and
[21:39]that was not the only reason and then the confiscator they wanted
[21:44]to get endorsement of him on their regime they want him to
[21:50]endorse their regime which he refused and the things went to this
[21:58]level that he had his turban around her around his neck and
[22:04]he was dragged outside of the house so that much physical things
[22:08]were there to the noble husband which was appointed by the prophet
[22:12]of God peace be upon him and when she raised voice against
[22:21]one of her rights as we all know the story and she
[22:27]was made to go to have an appearance and code and we
[22:30]should never forget we are talking about a personality about whom there's
[22:37]a fam tradition uh Hadith of prophet Muhammad peace be upon him
[22:41]he said on the day of judgment my daughter faaam she would
[22:47]walk over the poat with a green robe which would cover her
[22:55]and all the dealings people present at Masher they will be ordered
[23:01]by God that you should raise your you know kind of sight
[23:07]down so have your sight down lower your gaze and that would
[23:10]be the kind of status of her at the time in Masha
[23:14]and that kind of personality she was forced to go to the
[23:21]court of the ruler the way she went so what you would
[23:27]do what what what we think you look at all the other
[23:31]prophets you look at Prophet new Prophet Tre uh Prophet Moses so
[23:38]whenever they went under hardships what they did they prayed to God
[23:41]okay God we have done our job and we could not make
[23:47]any much change to your Creations please destroy them and Prophet Muhammad
[23:53]C chers when you know he was put to so much challenges
[23:57]by the INF fiddles he could have prayed uh for destroying them
[24:04]but he never did he always that's why he's he always said
[24:07]okay you never know someone of someone from them they would turn
[24:10]to Islam so what do you think the personality like sayam and
[24:16]the kind of attribute of status she had what if she's doing
[24:23]any badwa curse on the people will God not destroy them did
[24:26]she do anything no her door was broken she was hurt the
[24:35]baby was damaged but she never prayed against anything she had the
[24:39]power we believe if she prayed to God destroy that's why some
[24:44]of the companion of the Prophet they were so scared they wanted
[24:49]a forgiveness from her because they know if she's not praying here
[24:53]she might do something afterwards and that would be hard to bear
[25:00]that's why we see many companions of prophet they were just begging
[25:05]for the forgiveness from her so she had powers she has powers
[25:08]to pray to God and get them destroyed but she never exercised
[25:11]those Powers so with this brief overview of her life what I
[25:18]tried to tell or share with you that at different stages of
[25:24]her life she exercised element of patience in both means the both
[25:30]scenarios of patience which I presented to you when there was hardship
[25:35]she showed patience perseverance and waited for the right time prayed to
[25:40]God and when there was a time to exercise their poers she
[25:46]didn't she restrained herself and if you look at her last pray
[25:54]on the death bed what it was she was praying for the
[26:01]Forgiveness he was praying for the Forgiveness of the umah of our
[26:05]father peace be upon him I will end this with uh reading
[26:12]a passage uh from Imam Ali when im aliam he has finished
[26:19]the burial of say he stood up turned his face towards the
[26:27]grave of prophet Muhammad peace be upon him and he said this
[26:33]passage he said oh messenger of God I offer salutations to you
[26:41]on my own behalf and on your daughter's behalf she has come
[26:47]to your neighborhood she will be resting in your vicinity under the
[26:51]dust the almighty God has arranged a quick reunion between you both
[26:58]oh messenger of God God I have lost patience because of the
[27:03]separation from your beloved daughter I put up with the shock of
[27:08]being separated from you I repeat the same attitude now with this
[27:16]new separation from your daughter I laid you to sleep in your
[27:21]grave and the separation of your soul of prophet peace be upon
[27:27]you from your body came about when your body was resting between
[27:31]my chest and my neck the command of the Holy Quran suffice
[27:37]me verily we are gods and verily unto him is our return
