[0:00][Music] as we continue to look at The Life and Legacy of
[0:30]am and see these highlights of character and competence that Inspire us
[0:38]to continue in our journey of of growth and and personal development
[0:41]we come to a a time that the Imam experienced uh which
[0:45]was the last part of his life 24 or 25 years after
[0:51]the death of the Prophet s when the third ciff is assassinated
[0:59]and killed or executed and killed um the people come to IM
[1:03]aliam and say we want you to lead and the Imam uh
[1:08]responds to him in a in a very um eloquent way in
[1:11]a way that surprised them but of course it's no surprise to
[1:14]the students of IM Alam who understand his character and his competence
[1:18]when they said we want you to lead now he said go
[1:23]and seek someone else I'm better for you as counsel than I
[1:26]am as Chief go and seek someone else now he was making
[1:32]it clear to them that he did not want the caliphate not
[1:34]that he wasn't entitled to the caliph not that he wasn't entitled
[1:38]to lead the people in that manner he was the Imam he
[1:43]was the successor of the Prophet The Prophet had given him that
[1:45]role what he was making clear was what they had developed what
[1:51]they had created of a power structure was not a desire of
[1:53]his and the seat of the caliphate was not something that he
[1:58]had been uh looking for or wanting he wanted what was best
[2:02]for the people he would want he wanted what was best for
[2:04]Islam he wanted what was best for the collective interest that was
[2:09]involved but they contined to pursue him and they continue to say
[2:14]we we need you at this time he made it clear to
[2:18]them listen you may not have patience for how I'm going to
[2:21]rule because I'm going to rule like the prophet LED and the
[2:25]way the prophet lad is perhaps foreign to you right now by
[2:28]this point but they were insistent and the people came together um
[2:33]and arguably IM aliam would have been at that time the um
[2:42]arguably the first elected uh Muslim leader of the Muslim umah uh
[2:46]and perhaps even the first widely elected Arab leader of the Arabs
[2:50]and this is important to keep in mind as the the growth
[2:57]and development of the civilization and you see that this individual ual
[3:01]was recognized by all yes even those individuals that ended up fighting
[3:07]him shortly after including Zu and the uh first civil battle first
[3:11]Civil War of Jamal uh and even muawiya um all of them
[3:16]had a high respect and regard for him and history tells us
[3:19]that even when they spoke about him uh even during these times
[3:24]of of conflict they couldn't help but be in awe of him
[3:27]now it's not to take away their enmity towards him and the
[3:33]battles that they had um waged against him but you found that
[3:36]there was this uh Collective respect and awe for IM Alam because
[3:39]his character and competence was at such a high level now another
[3:45]show of um his character was um the way he ruled and
[3:51]when he started there was this emphasis with the people that you're
[3:55]not going to like what you're go what you're going to have
[3:57]with me and you're probably not going to have the patience for
[3:59]me there was a a really great example of this um early
[4:05]on even though the Imam uh only ruled for uh just shy
[4:07]of five years um one of the um one of The Chieftains
[4:14]or one of the Nobles of of qu had uh come to
[4:20]the IM the Imam complaining uh after receiving a uh a very
[4:23]low in his opinion a very low amount from the treasury so
[4:29]the people had received uh you know some sustenance some sens essentially
[4:34]from the treasury and when this Noble had received a particular stipend
[4:39]and he looked and he saw that he was getting the same
[4:44]thing as everybody else he was very much bothered by it so
[4:47]he goes up to the Imam uh in his court and he
[4:52]uh basically raises his voice he points to an individual uh that
[4:58]he like allegedly says this man was uh once my slave right
[5:03]this man was once my servant and you're giving him and you're
[5:09]giving me the same stiped right uh basically I demand an explanation
[5:14]um and the Imam responds and I'm paraphrasing here that um you
[5:23]know it seems that you have a problem with Justice because what
[5:27]is just is that everyone regardless of their uh color black or
[5:33]white red or yellow um Kashi or Nashi M or Arab or
[5:39]non-arab uh they all get the same now um what was also
[5:47]interesting we have narrations that speak about this this period of time
[5:51]and the engagement the conversations that the Imam had with um some
[5:55]of the companions of the Prophet people that had were expecting you
[6:02]know to be treated differently um and be given more because hey
[6:04]they were like Hey we're we're Companions of the Prophet don't forget
[6:08]about us and the Imam would simply reply to them uh you
[6:11]know you're Companions of the Prophet great your reward is with the
[6:19]prophet um making it clear that this idea of you know nepotism
[6:22]this idea of hey you know we're going to be getting taken
[6:29]care of um because of this P hisry that we have as
[6:32]companions it's not it's not going to flow it's not going to
[6:36]happen it's not going to work um but what you did see
[6:38]was this you know enfranchisement again of that maybe the earliest days
[6:45]of the Prophet the early days of of of of Islam with
[6:48]Prophet Muhammad where young people um people of uh you know uh
[6:58]different minority groups essentially right and in in this area were being
[7:02]enfranchised um and being supported where the nepotism that had you know
[7:08]increased and this uh these essentially uh Prejudice policies that favored um
[7:16]Arabs over non-arabs particularly and then even kesis over non karesi during
[7:21]the uh caliphate of ofan the third caliph and which also especially
[7:33]favored his um cousins and relatives from Banu um they weren't seeing
[7:37]that with IM Alam and this bothered a lot of people so
[7:41]even with all of the pressure and then even with the Civil
[7:48]War that took place um Imam was was getting like you know
[7:51]complaints and and even some of his uh advisers or some of
[7:56]his AIDS were telling him Hey listen man we're getting attacked left
[7:59]and right um you know maybe we can do some overtures maybe
[8:05]we can like you know bring some people close to us and
[8:07]the IM was very Stern with them he said you expect me
[8:12]to use people's the the people's money the treasury to buy uh
[8:16]favor with the people and and and give this person a gift
[8:21]and give this I wouldn't do that with my own money you
[8:22]expect me to do that with the money that I'm entrusted with
[8:26]by God absolutely not and there's another show specifically um with t
[8:32]Zu where they came to visit IM Alam um again for you
[8:37]know their post they were having expectations and they visited him in
[8:44]his home and they found Imam with a candle just literally just
[8:47]sitting down writing with a candle on and he asks them a
[8:49]simple question when they come in he says is this a personal
[8:54]matter or is this a matter of state and they said whoa
[9:00]well we've come to you know ask you and they said what
[9:03]they said and um you realized this was a matter of State
[9:08]he turned off the candle and then he turned on another candle
[9:11]they shared their concerns they talked to them the Imam responded and
[9:14]before they left they asked him why did you why did you
[9:20]turn off one candle and turn on another and he responded saying
[9:24]I turned off the candle that was bought with the money of
[9:31]the treasury and then I turned on the candle that was my
[9:34]personal candle because I didn't want to even waste the wick and
[9:40]the candle of the treasury for something that is of a personal
[9:45]Affair when they heard him say that they're like man we we
[9:49]have no shot we have no shot with this man his character
[9:51]is on a different level his competence his patience as a leader
[9:55]is on a different level when we see all of this with
[10:00]we are inspired to continue doing the hard work that even when
[10:07]it's not popular even when um we're faced with difficulty to see
[10:11]the bigger picture to make sure that we're putting our faith in
[10:14]God that we're trusting in Him and we're doing what's right we're
[10:20]doing what's needed Imam his character and competence uh is at such
[10:24]a level where you can continue to draw inspiration in every moment
[10:28]of your life just by looking at again any part of his
[10:34]life we continue to be inspired by his life by his legacy
