Why was I created?

Is any other goal besides this worth living for?

Everyone, everyone from any culture, asks this question as he matures, “Why was I created? I want to choose a goal.” They make the youth busy with false excitements, distractions and games. What is our goal in life? Meeting God. This is the natural goal of our life. God repeats this about 70 times in the Qur’an, “To Him we shall return.” [2:156] and “To Him all things return.” [64:3]
Young people ask me, “After living for example one billion years in Heaven, won’t we become bored sir?! How much do we want to dive into rivers, be with lovely mates and all that?!” Yes, they’re right. They haven’t realized that they’re preparing the introduction to receiving the most mystical answers. Why has God created you? Is it for anything besides Himself? Is this what your wisdom tells you? Are other goals worth pursuing?!
A young person asked me, “What should we do if we’re bored in Heaven?” I answered, “You’re right. One may get bored in Heaven. If they take you to a resort or a hotel, will you get bored there? You’ll get bored. A hotel is a place to rest, even if it’s a luxury hotel. Meeting your beloved, whether on a pilgrimage or even on your Honeymoon is what makes being in a hotel sweet for you. Heaven is like a hotel for meeting God. That’s what causes one not to become bored of the lovely mates, rivers etc.” He said, “Aha!”
We are able to determine the level of this meeting. We are able to increase the quality of this meeting. We can meet Him in the best situation. We can become eager for this meeting! «مَن ذَکَرَ اللّه َ وَ لَمْ یَشْتَقْ إلى لِقائهِ فَقدِ اسْتَهْزأ بنَفْسِهِ» Imam Reza (as) said, “Whoever remembers God but doesn’t yearn to meet Him has made fun of himself.” If I want to talk in a familiar way with such a person, I’ll say, “You clown! Don’t fool yourself with your prayer!” With friends, one can talk comfortably. When speaking in public we can’t talk like that!
If you think about it, you’ll come to this goal. If you think about it, you’ll love this goal! If you keep remembering this goal, you’ll become eager about it! Then I told this young man, “You probably don’t want to ask, ‘What if we become bored of God.’ If this comes to your mind, laugh at yourself.” Does God finish? If you know God a little, there’s nothing else new about Him?? After billions of years, when you go to meet him again, you’ll say, “I hadn’t seen God till now! I didn’t know Him!” This is after billions of years of being in Heaven, and this will continue forever.
This is the meaning of God being unlimited. God being unlimited doesn’t just mean His unlimited greatness. It also means He’s unlimitedly enjoyable. He has unlimited new things for a person. Unlimited fondness, unlimited love and unlimited affection. It can’t be anything besides this! If it is anything other than this, I won’t be satisfied! I won’t be satisfied with such a God! “I don’t love those who fade away!” [Qur’an 6:76] This is what Prophet Ibrahim (as) has taught me. He said, “Say the same thing, ‘I don’t love those who fade away.’” Choose a goal that does not fade away. Why has God created you? Is it for anything besides Himself? Is this what your wisdom tells you? Are other goals worth pursuing?!

This year’s different Muharram with Corona

There are many opportunities in threats that don’t exist in opportunities themselves.

We see in many cases that some religious people are either alone individually or in a group. Corona has caused social distancing, but it has strengthened social connections. I was complaining for years about people holding mourning ceremonies in closed places where many could not see them. The principle of mourning is not about being alone with Imam Husayn (as).
Some consider mourning and crying for Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (as) to be something like the Midnight Prayer. No, this connection with the Imam should be in the open and in public. In particular, we should mourn in a part of the city where people are not used to mourning, where they haven’t seen mourning processions and don’t know what happens in such gatherings. The mourning processions should go to a part of the city where there is no religious gathering and the mourning processions don’t go. Perhaps they should go to that part of the city. Thank God, due to the current situation, people are forced to come out from their appealing, sweet, indoor ceremonies and sit in the streets with a distance of 3 or 4 meters between them in a very large boulevard and mourn and cry there. Others can see them too.
Imagine a mourning procession, where in the past they used to be one meter apart. Now, they must stand 3 meters apart. This procession will become even longer. All of these increase the outer manifestations of mourning for Aba Abdillah al-Husayn. Mourn while sitting on the dirt or in a desert in addition to mourning outdoors or mourning processions in the streets and in boulevards. In addition, mourn in schoolyards, university grounds or in the open grounds of army compounds. You’ve seen some of these examples in war memorials, where young people sit on the dirt and talk to the martyrs. What a beautiful event that is.
This year is the year for being creative in mourning. It’s the year for mourners to have outdoor programs.
Yes, we may think that great meeting and passionate group that we had, that group where we beat our chests together and enjoyed more, won’t take place. But what will happen instead, is something that religion and the Imam of the Time (a.j.) will benefit from more. Aba Abdillah’s school of thought will benefit more. This is when people forget their own likings and perform a greater duty. As the honorable Martyr Soleimani said, there are many opportunities in threats, which are not present in opportunities.
Martyr Soleimani, “I have experienced this; there are many opportunities in threats that don’t exist in opportunities themselves.”
Corona has caused social distancing, but it has strengthened social connections. This year is the year for being creative in mourning. It’s the year for mourners to have outdoor programs.

Aba al-Fazl al-Abbas’s (a) two-month-old guest
Find us too!

The Pilgrim’s Guidance Center and Missing Persons Headquarters once related, “Many amazing stories happen here. I’ll tell you one of them. Last year or the year before that, a woman came to Karbala. She came to the Pilgrim’s Guidance Center and said, ‘I’ve lost my infant child. It has been a few days I’ve lost him and I can’t tolerate it.’ ‘How did you lose your child?’
‘He was in his grandmother’s embrace, who was in a wheelchair. We were walking toward Karbala. A young man came and asked if he could help. He helped us until we came to a crowd and I lost them. He was stronger, so he walked faster. No matter how much I searched, I wasn’t able to find them.’ We said, ‘Give us your mother’s number.’ She said, ‘She doesn’t have a phone.’ We said, ‘What’s your mother’s name, we’ll page her.’ She said, ‘My mother is deaf and mute.’
We were thinking that how could we find this child among 10 million people in Karbala. We would take the woman to search around the shrine in the mornings. Then we would bring her back to rest some. Then we would search again. She couldn’t tolerate it; she was a mother who had lost her two-month old, nursing infant.
One place I saw a woman sitting facing the shrine and feeding a baby. I told myself, ‘I wish it was her baby in this woman’s embrace.’ Suddenly, I saw a wheelchair behind her. I called the mother and asked her, ‘Is that your mother's wheelchair?’ I didn’t even think about the baby. I thought some Arab woman is feeding her baby. The mother came to check the wheelchair. Suddenly, she saw the baby and screamed, ‘This is my baby!’ She went to the baby. The Arab woman gave the child to her kindly.
We brought a translator and asked her, ‘Why is this baby in your embrace?’ She said, ‘A few nights ago, I saw Aba al-Fazl al-Abbas in a dream. He told me, “I have a two-month old guest this year. Since you nurse a child and this child needs milk, go next to the shrine and you will find him there. They’ll be your guests for three days till his mother comes.” So, my husband and I came here searching and saying, “O Aba al-Fazl, where is your two-month old guest?!" Suddenly, I saw a young man with a woman who had a child who was perishing in her embrace. I went to talk to her, but she was deaf and mute. I asked if the baby wants milk. “Yes,” she said. I fed the baby. I took them to my house in the evenings and took care of them. In the mornings, I would bring them to the shrine to find his mother, and then you came.’”
O Aba al-Fazl al-Abbas, we are lost too! Find us too.

Relinquishing the Ismails in Our Lives

Many religious people have a problem in this area! The way to test a person’s internal being is for him to ignore an interest. The good interests that you have gained, now you have to sacrifice some of those good interests.
Whenever you decide to do a valuable action, you should pass over one of your interests. Therefore, the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (‘a), said, “Any sin is accompanied by desire. Any act of obedience is accompanied with feelings of aversion and hardship.” With this design that the Almighty God has made within us, He has created the opportunity for testing.
So, if we resist our desires and bad interests, activate our good interests, and taste the enjoyment of good interests, will we live happily? No my dear! One should oppose his or her good desires for better desires!
After you have become good, will everything be solved? No, then it’s time to sacrifice the good interests that you have gained. Many religious people have a problem in this area!
Satan didn’t want to open up a bar! He didn’t want to act like a gangster! He said, “Instead of this prostrating, I’ll pray 2 thousand years for You.”
One might say, “One has to resist his bad interests for his good interests! He has to oppose his lesser interests for more valuable and higher interests!” No my dear! One should oppose his or her good desires for better desires! Which good interests? Give an example.
For example, you love your Ali Akbar (the son of Husayn (‘a)). Now you must sacrifice your Ali Akbar. Or, you are Ibrahim. And, you love your Ismail. Now sacrifice your Ismail.
In this world, the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (‘a), loved to protect Hazrat Fatimah Zahra (s) more than anything else. But, the situation required that because of God he not use his sword to defend Hazrat Fatimah (‘a) due to superior interests. And this anguish remained with him till the end of his life. It wasn’t easy for him!
It is for this part of the story that we gather to read eulogies about tragedies. The way to test a person’s internal being is for him to ignore an interest. The good interests that you have gained, now you have to sacrifice some of those good interests. One should oppose his or her good desires for better desires! And, this continues until the last moment!

I just want to get close to God!

Someone said, “O Prophet of God, I helped you in the desert.” The Prophet (s) said, “Ask, and I will give it to you.” He said, “Let me think.” He left, thought, and came back. He said, “I want to be at your level in Heaven.” He said the best thing. The Prophet (s) asked him one thing, “Did you think about it yourself? Or, did someone help you?”
If he had said, “someone helped me”, the Prophet (s) wouldn’t have accepted it. The man said, “I thought about it myself.” The Prophet (s) asked, “Explain how you came to this result?” The Prophet (s) knew he was saying the truth; but, the man had to reach this result by himself.
He said, “I thought that whatever I get from you in this world will be destroyed. In the Hereafter, God will give you the best place. I want that. No position is higher than yours.” The prophet said, “I accept. I will take you.” Because that man had thought about it.
I want to talk simply. After you think, you will come to one result. Although, this may seem like a slogan in this meeting. After you think, you will see that the most valuable thing, which you should choose for your goal, is to meet God in the best situation. Just think! Only your own thinking can rescue you.
“We thought and realized it is great to have these enjoyments.” “No, you haven’t thought about it yet. Give yourself time. Think.” Why has God created me? To enjoy what? How does he want to fill me with joy? Is it possible He put the desire for joy in me but won’t fill me with it? Not only is this below God’s dignity, it is unjust. Is it possible that God doesn’t give me the greatest excitement when He has put the desire for it in me? How will He do that? With something less than Himself? What you must choose for your goal is to get close to God. Nothing else is important. “I just want to get close to You.”
If you think a little more, other things will happen too. This becomes your only goal. If you think even more, something else will happen too. You will become in love with this goal. It is not under your control either. It is not based on people’s tastes either. At first we think and choose a goal. When we have chosen a goal it will be, “I want to get close to God.” I don’t want anything else. I just want to get close to God. Nothing else is important to me.
Think and come to this point that you say, “I just have one goal in life, to get close to God, and nothing else is important to me.” I’m studying. Does that help me to get close to You? I’m smiling. Does that help me to get close to You? Choose a high goal for your life, which is nothing but to reach to God. But, don’t take it from me.
If all the 124,000 prophets (a) tell you that this is the goal, it is worthless unless you think about it yourself and find it. Just think! Only your own thinking can rescue you.

Repent like the People of the Book did!

This verse was revealed, “The Prophet has a greater right on the believers than their own selves.” The Prophet (s) is the owner of the people. He is the owner of people’s property. He has a greater right than their own selves. He has a greater right in everything. This verse means that the Prophet (s) has authority over them. “The Prophet has a greater right on the believers than their own selves.” He even has more right than themselves.
The Jewish people of Medina saw Islam and were close to becoming Muslims. They didn’t know what to do with this invitation and this Prophet (s). They asked him, “O Prophet of God (s)! Does this verse mean that you are the owner of whatever we earn?! ‘The Prophet has a greater right on the believers than their own selves.’”
The Prophet of God (s) said, “The meaning of this verse is as you have said, but the verse doesn’t want to say this.” They said, “So what does it want to say?” The Prophet (s) said, “It wants to say that the Prophet has authority over you. Whatever you earn, you go and spend it and live. The Prophet (s) won’t take it from you. But, whenever you couldn’t make it, the Prophet (s) is there for you. You are not without an owner. He will compensate for you.” You are not without an owner! When the Prophet (s) stated this interpretation, all of the pure hearted Jewish people of Medina became Muslims.
Whoever has ruined his life must go to God and repeat these sentences: O God, I have ruined my own life. “I have oppressed myself.” I have hurt myself. I have ruined things. Because I knew that I have an advocate, and that is You. You are the Absolute Power. You were waiting for me to come and tell You of my lapses so that You could compensate. Now I have come to say: O God! I know that You are not my enemy to punish me. You are my God. You are my Guardian.
I have ruined my life. I didn’t listen to You, and I gave the price for it. What should I do now? Shall I go all this way from the beginning?! It is impossible. Is it possible that I return to my teenage years, live again, and come forward?! Even if You make me a teenager now, what is the guarantee that when I go back I will be able to do something? I am still the same person! You compensate for me…
