For those unfamiliar, the Day of Ashura is the day like none other in Islamic history when the very grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), namely Imam Al-Hussain, was slaughtered, beheaded and decapitated along with his unwaveringly loyal companions and family members, including his infant son, at the hands of the forces of the corrupt Umayyad caliph of the time. Ashura commemorations annually galvanise millions of Muslims, particularly Shia Muslims, forming the world’s largest annual gathering taking place in modern-day Iraq on the Day of Arbaeen (forty days after the Day of Ashura).
As reported to us in the book Al-Amali, by Shaykh Al-Saduq, with his chain of transmission, we are given a remarkably unique insight into the tragedy of Karbala.
