In verse 32 of the 53rd chapter in the Qur’an, it is said, “Justify not yourselves. He knows best who it is that guards against evil.” This means everyone should try to be pious. And I, God, will watch and judge.
Imagine someone who curses four times a day. One may say, “He’s cursing, so he’s not pious.” No, wait! You can’t judge.Imagine another person who curses once a day. “So he’s not that pious either, because he’s cursing every day. The other person curses four times a day, so he is four times less pious.” But we may see on the Day of Judgment that the one who used to curse once a day is taken to Hell because he wasn’t pious. But the other one who used to curse four times a day is taken to Heaven because of his piety. “O God, it seems this isn’t fair! We thought this should be different.”
It will be as this verse states, “It will abase some and exalt others.” [56:3] God will say, “The one who used to curse four times a day, I know that he stopped himself from cursing 40 times a day. Mentally, he was such that he stopped himself from cursing 40 times a day, but he couldn’t control those four cases. And about these four cases, he wanted to curse very badly, but he controlled himself and cursed just a little. Of course that was a fault, but We forgave him. So you can’t measure one’s piety that easily!”
“God, what about the one who cursed once. You could have forgiven him too.” God says, “No! He wasn’t the kind of person who was used to cursing. I created him Myself. He wasn’t even upset, but he cursed. And he wasn’t regretful about it. He was thinking, ‘People are cursing so much. Now I cursed once. God should be ok with that!’ So I’ll punish him severely.”
“The most honorable among you in the sight of God is the most pious of you.” [Qur’an 49:13] On the Day of Judgment, the most pious people will be obvious. But we can’t easily judge about them now. Let’s try to avoid the habit of judging people. Sometimes in a mosque or in a school, we quickly label people. We’re making some proud and some lose hope. So people’s honor will be ruined. What a great school it is that teaches its students to not keep easily judging others.

The Lowest Level of Love

Could there be any level higher than this?!

There was a spiritual, loving person who lived in the desert. Sometimes we can see for example a truck driver who is very pure and spiritual. He talks and supplicates God sincerely when he’s on the road. Someone like this came to Imam Ali (‘a). He came to the Imam straight from the desert. “What is your question?” What do you think his question was? He asked about the levels of those in love. “How many levels do they have?” The Imam replied, “The lowest level of the people in love…” After hearing him, the man fainted. They poured water on his face and brought him to his senses. After regaining consciousness, he asked, “Is there any level higher than this?” Imam! You said the highest points. Then, you say this is the first level of love? Do we have any level higher than this? The Imam replied, “Yes, seventy levels.” Now, are you interested in hearing about the lowest level of those who are in love that when the Imam described it, the man fainted? Don’t faint!
“The lowest level is that he sees his own servitude to be small.” Whatever he does, he says, “This was nothing.” He says this with sincerity. When a spoiled person who thinks highly of himself does something good, he says, “That’s how I am!” “You didn’t do anything important!” It’s very good for a person to consider himself to be small. Don’t consider your good deeds to be big. “A person who considers his servitude to be small and his sins to be great.” So, the second feature of the lowest level of love is to consider one’s own sins to be great. Such a person doesn’t forgive himself. He makes one mistake and says, “God, I can’t forgive myself.” He constantly asks for God’s forgiveness.
Another tradition says, “A believer’s sins are always in front of his eyes and trouble him.” He constantly says, “God, I’m sorry. I was wrong to do this.” He keeps repeating this and becomes dearer and dearer to God. After doing a bad deed, say, “It was really embarrassing. It was really bad!” How does this show love? For example, you are in love and take a gift for your beloved. If a small spot is on it, you’ll blame yourself very much, very much. You won’t forgive yourself. You say, “It was embarrassing. It was too bad.” Someone says, “Don’t worry about it. It’s alright.” “No, I didn’t want it to be like this.”
Why don’t we apologize for our prayers? Because we are not in love. We say, “Take it! God, I prayed. There. Take it. Hey you! Collect it and give it to God!” “You think you prayed well?” “Yah! What do you expect? You want me to torture myself?!” He thinks he deserves more. “Excuse me; it looks like we owe you something!” Shall I say the third part, after which that man fainted? Or, shall I not say it?!
“He thinks there is no one but him in both worlds who will be punished.” They only want to punish him, not others. When walking in the streets, he says, “God only wants to punish me. He doesn’t want to punish others!” If you don’t want any bad points to be left hidden in your heart, you shouldn’t be easy on yourself. Be hard on yourself. “What should I do?” You should say, “God only wants to punish me and no one else.” If you don’t want to hide your bad points, you should be hard on yourself. What is the first condition for being hard on oneself? “He considers his servitude to be small.” He says, “God only wants to punish me. He doesn’t want to punish others!”

==============================
We want to reach the goal that God has created us for. What should we do? From where should we start?
One starting point is choosing your goal well. Moving forward, having the insight to have a program to move forward and having enthusiasm to reach the destination, are very dependent on our seeing the goal. Whenever you see your heart feels cold, whenever you see you don’t have that needed speed and eagerness, whenever you see you can’t find the way and don’t know what you should do, know that your connection with your goal has become weak.
For each deed you should have the intention of getting close to God. When you say, “To get close to God,” you’re saying your goal. Mention your goal, then take action. Mention your goal, then take action. Doing good deeds and worshiping without mentioning the goal is useless. Interestingly you must keep repeating this. If you prayed but didn’t have the intention of getting close to God, you have to pray again. It was useless.
Having a goal is this important! This doesn’t mean just saying you believe and then thinking that now you’re a believer. You should keep remembering this goal and being concerned with it for each act. You should take action because of it. You want to chat with your friend or you want to rest. You want to get up at dawn. You want to go to work tomorrow. You should say it. You should repeat it in your heart. “I’m doing these for that goal.” You should repeat this.
How many actions do you do every day? Can you count the actions you do in your day? “I go to work.” Before going to work, you do one hundred other things too. One is that you get dressed. Let’s talk about getting dressed. We don’t count it as an activity. What is your intention for wearing these clothes? “I’m just wearing clothes. I can’t go without clothes! I have to wear clothes.” “Why are you wearing these clothes?” “I’ve bought them to wear them!” A tradition says that if you wear clothes to attract people’s attention, God won’t look at you as long as you’re wearing those clothes. “But this was the most normal act. This was my everyday coat!” What was your intention today for wearing this normal, everyday coat?”
This is how religion trains us. Religiosity starts from this point. “A person wears clothes to attract people’s attention. Do I have to look ugly? Should I wear a sack?!” No, but why do you want to attract people’s attention? Because of God or because of yourself? “Just forget it! You look at my intentions in too much detail!” It’s fine if you look proper to others. It’s good that you bought good clothes. Whether your clothes are normal, average or good, say, “God, I want to look good because of You.”
[One says,] “But I don’t remember to do this!” If you don’t pay attention to this, you won’t move toward your goal! You’ll also lose the opportunities you have. Then you will wonder why you don’t move forward. It’s because you’re not in a hurry and don’t feel a pressing need. Because of God! After putting on your clothes, won’t you say goodbye before you go out? Why do you want to say goodbye? “But we always say goodbye! Can I just make the intention that from now on whenever I say goodbye it’s for the sake of God?”
Why do you want to take a step toward your goal just once? You don’t want to put effort to move toward your goal again? You’ve become tired of your goal!? Is this repetition bothering you? One time forever? Maybe you want a computer to do it for you?! So you don’t want to become close to God at all. Go live your life.
A person who has a strong connection with his goal will remember it each time. Now that God has made it so simple and you can move toward God with your simple deeds, why don’t you do it? You’re announcing to others, “People, I know God. This God is boring for you to want to remember Him all the time. So don’t come toward Him. My life is boring too. Don’t make your life boring.” Is this what you want to announce? You haven’t gone toward God yourself and now you want to prevent others as well?
One should pay attention to his goal very much. And one should have a constant connection with his goal. Whenever you see your heart feels cold, whenever you see you don’t have that needed speed and eagerness, whenever you see you can’t find the way and don’t know what you should do, know that your connection with your goal has weakened. A person who has a strong connection with his goal will remember it each time.
For all your deeds, you should have the intention of getting close to God. “Getting close to God” means saying our goal. Doing good deeds and worshiping without mentioning the goal is useless. Religiosity starts from this point.

Pull yourself together!
Let’s have a program for our lives.

I ask every one of us to put Islam to the side and also worshiping, faith, etc. Now, let’s concentrate on Taqwa and vigilance for a while. Let’s not do just whatever our will wants.
What is the opposite of being vigilant? I desire this. Or, I’m tired. For example, when they give you a schedule to follow, you become tired of it after a while. Becoming corrected starts from this point. “I’m tired and not in the mood to do it today. I had a schedule every day at this time. Today, I’m not in the mood to do it.” Today when you are not in the mood to do it, it will become clear whether you are vigilant or not. Or, are you following your own desires?
If you don’t want your desires to overcome you, you shouldn’t behave according to them. So, what should we behave according to? According to a program. When you want to act according to a program, if it is a little complicated and demanding, you’ll need vigilance. For example, the people who drive in the streets are careful not to have an accident. God doesn’t allow anyone to live without vigilance. One of the things that vigilance does is that it brings order. This point has been mentioned in the beginning of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali bin Abi Talib’s (‘a), will. The wills of regular people are their most important words. The Imam wasn’t a regular person. All his words were the most important words in the world of creation. “I advise you to adhere to Taqwa (vigilance) and discipline in your affairs.” (Nahj al-Balaghah, letter no. 47)
Discipline is the result of Taqwa. Ayatollah Shari’at Madari’s grandchild shared a room with Imam Khomeini in the Islamic seminary. This old man said, “The Imam was always ready to work whenever we saw him. When he used to wake up at dawn, make the minor ablution and start worshiping, in this shared room - before getting married - it was as if he was going to a gathering. Well groomed! We never saw him being sloppy.”
I don’t want to set rituals for you! The important point is that a person shouldn’t be sloppy. He should be vigilant and careful. Be careful of yourself and collect yourself. If you don’t pull yourself together and you let yourself go, no matter how much goodness you have, “Allah only accepts from those who guard (against evil).” [Qur’an 5:27]
A person has let himself go. Now he misses the Imam of the Time (‘a.j.) and suddenly wants to have a gathering for the “Nudbah Supplication.” You should collect yourself first. He has let go of himself, now he sometimes has a whim to do good deeds. Who are you trying to deceive? Be vigilant. See how much you can handle. Start gradually. I want to act according to a program and be vigilant. If you aren’t vigilant, what are you behaving in accordance with? Your will. Don’t act according to your own will. Taqwa means vigilance. Let’s have Taqwa and vigilance for a while. Let’s not do just whatever our will wants. God doesn’t allow anyone to live without vigilance. Let’s act according to a program.

Look from above

“Your best youth are those who are similar to your elders,” the Prophet (s)

“Your best youth are those who are similar to your elders.” [The Prophet (s), Makarim al-Akhlaq, p. 118] What is this similarity? People who are older are able to look from above. Do you know an example of looking from above? Apples drop from trees in front of many people. One person looked from above. He asked, “Why is it that everything that is released in the air drops down?” He looked from above. A revolution in Physics!
What happens if you don’t look from above? You may say, “Yeah! An apple dropped. All apples drop.” For example, one has just gotten married. The elder people in the family see that this young couple look for some privacy to speak softly together! They don’t even say anything special! They’re saying nonsensical things. “Did you see that?” “Yes I did.” “Did you see me too?” “Yes I did!” You could say these things out loud, “Did you see that place?” “Yes, I did!” When an older person looks from above he says, “Of course, they’ve just gotten married. Enjoy!” Imagine what happens if a young person looks from above. “The world will become dull to him/her.” “No, these trivial tastes will become tasteless for him/her. Such a person goes after pure tastes.”
Once a young man came to me and said, “I like my friend very much.” He was approximately the age of a high school student. “My friend has left our school.” Or, “He has changed his job. I really can’t tolerate this!” This often happens among the youth. He asked, “What’s the solution?” I said, “This feeling will pass!” He asked again, “What should I do?” I said, “Look! This feeling will pass. Do you understand? This feeling will pass. It’s temporary.” He said, “Sir, what should I do now?!” I said, “You’re not listening! This feeling will pass! This means you should look from above! You’ll laugh at this later. For now, try to see things from above.”
Once a young man came to me saying, “Sir, it’s my wedding.” I said, “Oh! It’s your wedding, so you must be happy!” He said, “No, we were engaged for a while. Now it’s our wedding. My family is rejoicing very much. But, I feel everything is normal! It’s nothing special. Do I have a problem?! They blame me, ‘Why aren’t you excited.’” I looked around to see if anyone was near by. I saw there wasn’t anyone. So, I told him, “See, you’re all right that you feel normal! Those who are over excited aren’t feeling well. Be comfortable! This is not an extraordinary event!” Some say, “Wow, it’s my wedding! Wow!” It’s just his/her wedding!
Look from above! If you look from above, you won’t be captivated by any likings. If you look from above, many excitements will be eliminated. Look from above!

On the Day of Judgment, we will meet Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (as). God willing, they will take us to be in his presence. A question will arise within us due to his innocent, mystical, loving look. He won’t ask it directly. That question is, “What have you done for Husayn (as)?” Husayn (as) gave whatever he had. What have you done for Imam Husayn (as)?
Have you seen how people like to give whatever they have for Imam Husayn (as)? No one is ever satisfied he’s done enough, no matter what he has done [for the Imam]. Husayn (as) went through a lot for us. Are we able to compensate? He travelled through the plains and deserts with his family. Shouldn't we hold a mourning ceremony with our family? Shouldn’t we spend a few minutes for him?
I want to say something that may not seem polite. I wish we would suffer when we held a mourning ceremony. Then we would say, “O Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (as), we suffered because of you. But Husayn (as), whenever we hold a meeting for you, we enjoy it. This is our entertainment. Then we owe you more. What can we do for you? You hugged your child and went into the battlefield. Then you had to throw his blood up into the sky a few minutes later. Your tolerance was finishing, so you said, “This tragedy is easy for me, because God is watching.”
We hug our children and stand at the door of mourning ceremonies. Whoever comes shows affection to our child. Our children say, “What a pleasant meeting it was. Everyone was kind.” But you and your family went to Karbala. And the story unfolded in a way that your daughter begged you, “Don’t leave us alone.” The events were such that Sukayna said, “Return us to the shrine of our ancestor.” Whenever we participate in a mourning ceremony, afterwards we stand in front of the door in order to take our family back home. If we hold a mourning ceremony at home, we are honored even more. [O Husayn,] how are we able to compensate for your efforts? [Holding ceremonies] increases our dignity and spiritual enjoyment. O Aba Abdillah, how can we answer your kindness? What can we do for you, O Husayn (as)?
See how some people mourn in the mourning ceremonies. It’s as if they want to compensate somehow. But it’s impossible. Imam Husayn (as) will make up for you right away. Any step you want to take for Imam Husayn (as), he lets you taste its sweetness right away. He doesn’t leave it for the Hereafter. No one is thinking of the Day of Judgment in a mourning ceremony. Imam Husayn (as) makes up for whatever you do right away.
I wish we would suffer when we held a mourning ceremony. Then we would say, “O Aba Abdillah al-Husayn (as), we suffered because of you. Imam Husayn (as) makes up for whatever you do right away.

We are not alone.

We are not alone. There is God. God loves us. This feeling that you are alone is a false feeling. The first factor, which causes a person to constantly forget God’s Kindness, is the feeling of loneliness in making decisions, and the situation that God has brought for him. Why don’t we believe in God’s Kindness? Why do we gradually forget and become suspicious? Because of the environment of testing in our lives, we human beings feel lonely. We feel that God is not close. He doesn’t answer us quickly. So, we feel alone.
God told Adam, “Don’t touch the forbidden tree. You can touch the rest.” God was silent a little to see what he will do. He left Adam alone. Satan used Adam’s loneliness, because he knew that Adam was being tested. As soon as Adam was alone, Satan said, “Adam, shall I direct you to the ‘Tree of Eternity’ and a kingdom which never decays?” (Qur’an 20:120) Adam forgot God and His Kindness for a moment. Pay attention. He thought he was alone. “Adam disobeyed his Lord.” (Qur’an 20:121) He forgot God and thought he was alone. From this feeling of loneliness, we get to the point that we feel no one loves us. “I’m with you 24 hours a day.” “Where are You God?” He replies, “I’m standing back a little to see how you pass your life tests.”
Why do we forget God’s Kindness? Because, God leaves us alone in the testing field to see what we will do. We think we’re alone and ruin it. We think we’ve lost our Patron and ruin it. Why don’t we rely on His Kindness? Why do we forget His Kindness? Because, God has put us in a situation, which makes us believe that we are alone. Are we really alone? Has God abandoned us? We should realize that in this being alone we are never alone. Never. God supports and guides us. God won’t stop His Kindness.
We believe in an unkind God. We say, “No, He’s not that kind! Actually, He’s waiting for me to make a mistake to punish me!” We’re not alone. There’s God. God loves us. This feeling that you are alone is a false feeling. This is the feeling that Hazrat Adam (‘a) had, and Satan dragged him to the forbidden tree. We should never go towards the forbidden tree because of feeling alone. God is very kind. Disobeying this kind God is very, very bad. Very bad. Very. Why do we forget His Kindness? Because, God has put us in a situation, which induces us to think that we are alone. Are we really alone? Has God abandoned us?

We should realize that in being alone, we are never alone. Never. God supports us. We’re not alone. There’s God.

Have you heard this?
«إِلَهِی هَبْ لِی کَمَالَ الانْقِطَاعِ إِلَیْکَ»
“God, grant me complete disconnection in coming toward you.” (Shabaniah Supplication)

How does this complete disconnection come about? This is truly amazing. Some things should happen in our mind. What happens in our mind is the greatest action we take in life. [Imam Sadiq (as) said,] «إذا أرادَ أحدُکُم أن لا یَسألَ رَبَّهُ شیئا» “When one wants to ask for something from God” - you want to ask for something from God and you want Him to definitely grant it to you - «فَلْیَیأسْ مِن النّاسِ کُلِّهِم» “be disappointed in everyone,” «و لا یکونُ لَهُ رجاءٌ إلاّ عندَ اللّه»”and do not have hope in anyone but God.”
No one can be effective in our lives [except God]. No one can. When we are a little ill or have a slight problem, we first list everything [that can help us]. Become disappointed from everyone. «یَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّی أَقْدِرُ عَلی أَنْ أُعْطِیَهُمْ ما یَسْأَلُونِی» “When praying they should have this in mind that I [God] have the power to answer them.” This is the condition for prayers to be accepted.
This means our only thought should be that God can. God can. Power is in His hands and no one else is able to do anything. When we are a little ill or have a slight problem, we first list everything [that can help us]. If we pay attention to God from the beginning like someone who is ill and doesn’t have anyone except God, the situation may change a lot.
Sometimes this disconnection happens in a person’s mind for a moment. Friends, how does the Almighty God bring a person close to Himself? I want to say something scary. If we don’t achieve disconnection through practice, paying attention and thinking, we will gain this complete disconnection with great difficulties, because God has said, “I swear by My dignity and glory that I cut off the hope of My servant from everyone [except Me].”
In the beginning of the Abu Hamza Thumali Supplication, it is said, «إلهی لا تُؤدِّبنِی بِعُقُوبَتِکْ» “O my Lord, do not discipline me with Your punishment.” I have come myself. Don’t punish me. There are many intermediaries, but I have disconnected myself from them.
God says, «وَإِذا سَأَلَکَ عِبادی عَنّی فَإِنّی قَریبٌ»“And when My servants ask you concerning Me, then surely I am very near.” [Qur’an 2:186] «یَعْلَمُونَ أَنِّی أَقْدِرُ عَلی أَنْ أُعْطِیَهُمْ ما یَسْأَلُونِی»“When praying they should have this in mind that I [God] have the power to answer them.”

We want to be very calm and attain the best good mood. If a person is very good and experiences this good mood at times, he will feel like he’s flying in the skies when asleep or awake! Having a profoundly good mood is very enjoyable. It is not easy to gain a profoundly good mood.
If you attain a profoundly good mood, one part of it is feeling a tremendous safety. Where can one find a tremendous safety? From God Himself. This is the origin of faith. Do you feel safe due to God’s existence? We have to get to a point where even if we see or hear about bad events to come in the future and even if we are informed about our own death, we trust in God so much and have calmness to such an extent that we don’t feel bad. “In times of hardship and ease, they [pious people] feel the same.” [Nahj al-Balaghah, sermon no. 193]
They don’t feel bad in hardships. In the same way that one feels good when at ease, pious people don’t feel bad in hardships. If one wants to gain this much faith, surety, and good mood, then along with faith, he needs to have good actions too. He should act upon his faith. He should increase his faith. He should work on his faith. He should make great sacrifices for his faith. He must put effort into it. What have you done for your faith?
Faith is not an event. It’s a path. One should move on the path of faith. Faith is a seedling, which should grow and give fruit. One must irrigate faith. If you strengthen your faith, you will reach to a point where you will gain so much calmness that if you are aware of future hardships, you won’t feel bad. Your calmness won’t be due to not being aware of the time of your death and upcoming events. We should work on our faith and make it grow. When does our faith grow? In hardships. Where does our faith grow? When facing God’s difficult commands. Where does our faith grow? When facing God’s commands, which you feel are against you. But then you think and realize that this is your duty. When you act upon it, your faith will increase.
When your faith increases, in fact your feelings of safety will increase too. Then a person will gain a very profound feeling of safety. One who feels profoundly safe feels good. If a person does not practice his religion, act upon it, sacrifice for it, and increase his faith, he will not experience the highest calmness.
