If someone in the month of Ramadhan gives up the intention to fast - for example, he is considering to drink coffee but decides not to and continues with his fast - then his fast would be invalidated. However, since he hasn’t performed actions that invalidate the fast, scholars are unsure whether there is kaffara on him. Because kaffara in this case is a doubt, scholars can use the law of exemption to state that this fast doesn’t require a kaffara.
